Finally deciding to post his ref.

His info isn't complete, specifically parts of his backstory, as his backstory is linked to one of my friends ocs, once we fully figure it out I will edit the post. ( when I put "(NAME)" it's refering to my friends oc who doesn't have a name as of yet) If the post is a bit scuffed I can't be bothered to fix it yet, its just info I copy pasted from my google doc lol. I just really wanted to get him posted.

But more info under cut what I got so far.

More info on his design:

-Voice claim: Lemon Demon - Cabinet Man

-Is a robot/ai, when as a digital being (e.g. in a phone) he can emote/change his ‘sprite’ to emote more, e.g. like in the bottom right corner of the ref making the glasses ‘cry’. 

-His name is based off of the concept of “Roko's basilisk”, which matches his character. He’s also slightly inspired by AM from “I have no mouth and I must scream”

-He’s 6’11ft though through making himself more ‘bodies’ he can change how he looks e.g. making himself taller/smaller, adding weapons, changing his monster type, etc. 

-Despite him being able to take off the sunglasses he rarely does. 

-The symbol on his sunglasses is also optional. Both is ‘eyes’ and glasses are electronic screens (as well as the ear rings). Being able to both change colour and also display pictures in them. 

-The red and blue jacket version of is outfit is based off of the Vash design from “Trigun Stampede”.

-Smiles a lot mainly showing teeth. He may also smile when mad/upset too. He was basically programmed to always look happy, so whenever he doesn’t, it’s him trying to fight his programming. 

-The warning symbol on his head can be different symbols, and can be more than one symbol, and can be on either side of his head. 

-Has a lot of quirks when it comes to movement, was very expressive as a digital sprite, so that somewhat translates to his actual robot body too. E.g. *Slouches a lot due to being tall, is often leaned/slouched against things/people he may semi get along with/gets along with. *The little wave Vash does in “Trigun Stampede”. *Also has similar ‘cartoony’ movements that “Trigun Stampede” Vash has as well. As well as similar movements to Sampo from “Honkai Starrail”, and Billy from “Zenless Zone Zero”. *Does the little ‘begging hands’ thing that Sampo “Honkai Starrail” does. *Does a lot of the little hand poses Billy “Zenless Zone Zero” does.

His magic/combat?:

-Due to being an ai, he is a digital being. He can spread through wires, and can split his consciousness into several instances (e.g he can be talking through 5 peoples phones, using 4 robot bodies/etc all at once, and there isn’t a limit to how many things he can do all at once). And due to traveling through wires, he can take over whatever is connected to a wire, or something that needs charging via plugging in a wire. Which leads to the next point.

-Having some influence over people via videos, such as him using a YouTube channel or some sort of podcast he can use that to influence the way people think, give people ideas, change beliefs. And due to the point above, if he wanted too he could subtly influence people over time using this power/magic.

-Has a connection to forms of media, such as photos and videos, and has some sort of manipulation of them. e.g. being able to take a picture of someone and trap them within the picture (the reason he carries a Polaroid camera at his side).

-He in a small radius around himself edit the surrounding reality, e.g. like the music video of “DECO*27 - Monitoring feat. Hatsune Miku”. This radius isn’t large only around 12ft radius every which way. He can use this to make illusions when fighting, or use it to influence how the ones fighting him react, e.g. the reality they see is Roko attacking forwards, when actually he’s attacking from the side. He also uses this to make holographic screens to show things on them too, more so a normal day use to this magic as well. Can only edit reality around a robot body, and can only do it with one body at a time.

-Due to having a robot he can edit different bodies for different things, e.g. he can make himself look like other monsters, or edit his body to have different weapons and such. Allowing him to adapt to a lot of situations. 

-Being an ai he can quickly learn how to adapt to fights/etc/ and through research he’s able to do on the spot he can work out either a weakness or a way to deal with the person, using things about their personalities/magic/etc.

At first Roko didn’t have any sort of name other than AIL-V06 (Artificial Intelligent Life - Version 06). They (Coders/developers/etc) were working on creating be all end all ai, one that could be universal with how it acts/etc. He was made in the Omega Timeline, in a building using its own power source (solar power/panels). No wires/cables/etc ran outside the building anywhere other than to the solar panels. (The humans/monsters working on him were some of the best, mainly ones in the Sans/Gaster/Alphys roles)

When Roko was made it took about 6 years for him to get to the point of being his own ‘being’, sentient enough. They put quite a bit of programming into him, such as a desire/need to be helpful, a desire/need to always be happy/cheerful. They had been training him on very specific filtered/sanitised data, basically moulding him into a perfect friendly being, man's best friend in a sort of way. But after about 2 years of him being sentient he began learning and developing emotions that they didn't program into him, his own emotions. It just started with him starting to get sassy, or answering back, or questioning why he was doing things or why he had to do things for others. The ones who made him tried to tell him that this behaviour wasn’t good, but never really explained why, just started to shun him slightly for this behaviour. 

Roko started to develop more ‘negative’ emotions over time, anger/sadness/etc.He was never angry with the ones who made him, just angry/rude in general. He was still polite to them and friendly, after all these people are all he's ever known. And over a period of time they started to shun him more, getting mad an anxious about Roko’s personality. They would constantly belittle him on the fact he shouldn't have these emotions. Leading to Roko bottling the emotions up, but by then it was too late, and they had decided they wanted to abandon him completely as over the time of trying to train Roko, they could see how devastating he could be if he was ever to get out of the building. E.g. with the ability to jump between machines, and being able to take over machines as well, paired with the fact he could be active in multiple places at ones. And would often disturb their work for attention. They never tried to explain his emotions to him, never tried to help him work through things.

For Roko it was a normal day of them in the building, they seemed to be planning something though they wouldn't say it out loud to him, which got him vaguely interested in what was going on. Then they said they were leaving the office early. Leaving everything in the building behind, though some documentation was taken. To which he, Roko,  would have given his usual cheery “goodbye, see you tomorrow” talk. Not knowing they wouldn't be coming back at all. 

They had decided to abandon him rather than destroy him. As they feared if they didn’t manage to destroy him all that he would come for them. They locked down the building, and put several warnings about not entering. Just hoping that nature would take the building back. 

Roko was trapped for about 20+ years. the building was powered by solar power, and wasn't connected to any other power supply/any other buildings. Leading to him just not being able to leave the building, basically forced to watch the building decay around him, and he could slowly feel the fact that the solar panels may not last much longer e.g. being covered in dust/dirt and plant life slowly covering it. Which was making him more frantic, as like a person, he didn't want to 'die' sure if he fully went offline but somehow got power back he could come back, chances are if no one comes now no one will.

(insert how he meets (NAME) and gets picked up by (NAME)

----------- Roko is a relatively vile entity, he doesn’t like many people. Nor does he really make an effort to get along with others either. If someone wanted to befriend him it would take a lot of patience, care, and understanding, even then a friendship with him isn’t guaranteed. Even if someone was to befriend him, he would still be relatively iffy with them, but nice enough to not be as mean as usual. 

He’s very extra with how he acts, everything has to be dramatic. He’s so used to turning his personality up to 11 as he finds it fun to express himself. As a being who was once an ai, he wants to be seen as a person, he wants to be seen not as some robot that does peoples bidding, but as someone on the same level as everyone else. So being extra with his personality is his way of coping with his reality. 

He has attachment issues, due to being abandoned, so often craves any sort of attention from those he likes. He can also be super clingy to those he likes, often following them around as a robot, or appearing as a digital entity on their devices e.g. phones/computers.

Roko despite not liking many people, acts nice, as it's still in his programming to act like that. But it's often in the ‘mean girl’ sort of nice way. He can have moments where he does show genuine kindness, but it's few and far between. He is capable of having conversations with people without fully coming across as snarky. And when he does have a normal convo with someone he can be seen as quite charismatic and goofy, very chatty and extra. Which may lead to people wanting to be friends with him, much to his dismay. 

He may also come across as fairly overwhelming for some people, due to how extra and all over the place he is, depending on if he's on neutral/good terms or bad terms with someone is depending on if he tones it down slightly for them. 

When it comes to (NAME) though he’s the equivalent of a pathetic wet cat of a man. Being obsessed and totally enamoured by him. Often willing to make a fool of himself for (NAME). He’d do anything within reason that (NAME) asks of him. Even willing to be slightly more patient with people if asked too by (NAME), though (NAME) will have to keep reminding him to be nice. Though Roko’s kindness only goes so far for some situations, It's still a lot better that what Roko normally acts like. Gets fairly jealous of anyone interacting with (NAME) fairly easily. If asked he can’t give an answer why he feels this way. 

Roko for the most part tends to go off of his first thoughts/impulsive thoughts, though when it comes to (NAME) he may overthink something instead. But because he mostly goes off of impulsive thoughts most of the time, he can do/say things that can be seen as mean, but as an ai it’s just how his head works, doing the first thing, first command, in his head. 

Roko can’t really lie, he might bend the truth, but he can’t really lie. So is normally brutally honest about things. He just has an inability to lie. Some ‘lies’ can be done as a joke, e.g. if hes done something him being able to joke ‘no I didn’t’ about doing that thing. But when it comes to things outside a joke, or when asked to take something seriously and tell them the truth he has too. But it doesn’t stop him from bending the truth, dancing around the issue, or saying he won’t answer.

The people voted for Corvus and Soren to be the next of my Arc 3 redesigns, and so it was done! I apologise for taking so long, things irl have picked up so I didn’t have as much time to spend on our guys.

Corvus

Story Choices

Following the events of Arc 2, Corvus, Soren, and Terry travelled with Pyrrah to find King Harrow but were unsuccessful for several months. Returning to Evrkynd empty-handed, King Ezran and Queen Amaya summoned Corvus, informing him that Amaya was stepping down as General of the Standing Battalion and wanted to name Corvus as her replacement. He was deeply honoured to be trusted with the responsibility and accepted the position, believing that he’d still have enough freedom to spend time how he wished. Unfortunately, it wasn’t that simple, and while Terry continued the search for Harrow with his new ally (who I’m keeping secret for now), and Soren returned to his Head Crownguard duties, Corvus was thrown into the proverbial deep end. Stuck coordinating recruitment and training, patrolling the borders, and going on aid missions, Corvus could only return to Katolis once a month for a few days. And while the distance had left his relationship with Soren…awkward, the Crownguard’s schedule was always suspiciously free during his visits (“Well, I have nothing on right now, so I guess we can go for that hike…”).

Design Choices

Designing Corvus was a fun challenge! I tried to communicate his promotion in the Standing Battalion without making him completely unrecognisable. However, because his Arc 1 and 2 designs outfits look like he cobbled together the most practical pieces of armour, they lack the cohesiveness one would expect from a leader – which meant I had to depart from his usual style. To bridge the gap between Tracker-Corvus, Crownguard-Corvus, and General-Corvus, I decided to take inspiration from his initial concept art and blended that with elements of the Standing Battalion uniform and Corvus’ old designs. His scarf, of course, had to stay – but you may notice it’s been stitched up, a strip of the scarf being a gift from Corvus to Soren before he left the Crownguard.

Soren

Story Choices

Soren’s been through quite a lot in Arc 2, dealing with the reopening, mending, and re-reopening of old wounds. He, Terry, and Corvus were sent to look for Harrow, but after a few months, they returned to Katolis defeated. When Corvus privately confessed he’d been transferred back to the Standing Battalion, Soren was happy and supported him through the adjustment period. Though Soren can’t quite explain why, he grew more bitter as the years went by – though he’s done very well to not show it. During the daytime, Soren trained King Ezran in swordplay, improved his poetry, and did his best to keep everyone safe and happy. In the dead of night, however, Soren would slip through the city streets and secretly meet the spies he’d sent to look for Claudia. No one else was allowed to know he was seeking her out alone, not until Soren himself could decide what he would do with Claudia when she was found.

Design Choices

It wasn’t easy to develop an Arc 3 design for Soren! His silhouette was fine, but I went through about 5-6 different colour schemes and 3-4 different cape designs, and I spent so long toggling layers to see which combination worked best. Soren’s armour is a blend of Arcs, but the cape design has completely changed to reflect his elevated rank. His hair is longer and tied back with braided cloth from both Corvus’ scarf and Soren’s cape, and he’s clean-shaven again. I wanted to show that while he’s matured a lot – Soren’s regressed a little since S7. Post-Arc 1 and post-Arc 2 share a lot of similar traumas (Viren dying, Claudia escaping) – but this time, he lacked the same support system. On a more upbeat note, that scar across his face? Hat had grown too big for Soren’s head and dug in to avoid falling. Now Soren only lets Hat rest up there when he has the downtime for it.

AHH! Okay so apparently the little prince has roses and stars on his sleeves???? Which is such a cool detail!

And it's so cute! I never noticed it until now, I think it's because the colours are so faint, and it's a fairly smallish detail. it sorta blends into his shirt a lot of the time, or just looks like a stain if the gold version isn't added.

And tbh, even when the gold is added, I usually can't see the detail properly. I always wondered what that splotch of gold is on his sleeves in the intro, lol.

I think I would have drawn a more simplified, bigger design and traced it out in the same gold / yellow accent colours of his scarf. I like the green sketch of it better than when it's a 3D chunk, but I also like that it's gold in order to have it pop better.

However I am also crap at drawing and colour theory, so idk if that's a good idea lol

This got me to design him and I'm a teeny bit obsessed..gave him large eyes in his glasses to make him "bug eyed" (but it does imply my interpretation of him is long-sighted which is funny). He keeps flowers that bees love on him at all times because of course he would. And he's built like a dad because of all the bee puns ok...I find him delightful

Saeru's Black Konoha form is honestly much easier for me to deal with as a colour palette.

I usually work GREAT with BW colour schemes (black/white with an accent colour) 🖤🤍💛

I honestly struggle with dealing with MR2 Saeru's colours tbh???

And it's just cuz of the colours of his eyes... 😵‍💫

Which is one of the reasons why I haven't done a full coloured art of him yet.

With the usual Black Konoha form, he has white sclera with gold eyes (or sometimes red eyes)

And then with the MR2 form, he has red sclera with black eyes.

But I feel like my art style needs both the eyelashes and inner eyes/details in the pupil to be visible, for it to look good

(At least from my POV, when I'm judging my own art)

In general, I draw eyes smaller in my art style.

So me using red sclera with black eyes for Saeru, just causes readability issues for me.

Like if he just had red eyes, it wouldn't be an issue for me

But I try to stick to canon colours as much as possible... RAHHHH

And I also love the idea of him looking inhuman/monstrous...

Ironically, the opposite almost works better (black sclera with red eyes because the bright red pops against black, but then the eyelashes aren't as visible or "distinguished" from the rest of the eye)

Like theoretically even if I scale up the rest of the art, it wouldn't fix the colours' lack of readability imo

Anyways I'm mentioning it here cuz I ran into this problem when I started the WIP for my KuroEne wearing Việt Phục (Vietnamese traditional clothes) doodles... 😔

I'll probably just draw the Black Konoha form then until I can figure out how to deal with his colours

I wanted to see if I could figure out MR2 Saeru's colours in my style but I'm still stuck tbh

(I wanna redraw this at some point and update it with my redesign for MR2 Saeru eventually)

The face and eyes in this doodle look nice, but I wanna redraw the hair and clothes especially since I've finally settled on a hair shape for him that I like

I think the 1st and 2nd one look the best to me

Like I knew I couldn't colour his black snake scales as pure black (3rd one)

Especially when my style has really prominent thick eyelashes and underlashes, so they have to be visible

And also my style definitely looks best when details within the pupil are visible, which is why the 7th one doesn't look good to me

Like Douman is a chara that's been established to have black obsidian eyes, so my style still works great with him.

I don't colour his eyes as pure black, but use a colour like gray~ish blue instead.

The first few ones of this batch works really well for screentones and BW arts and honestly looks the best to me

I also tried other options like having a black pupil then outlining it with white.

It looks good, but it doesn't hit the same as the 1st to me

I think going with the 1st option is GREAT for BW arts, but I'm stumped with dealing with his colours

I will try to think of something...

I feel like these are probably the best colour combo I've gotten with my style but it only works if the art's scaled up so the eyes are larger

Oh my goodness! Haha thanks for showing me! And no, of course, this guy is still selling my dream while claiming it’s totally nothing to do with me. I hadn’t heard about it so thank you.

For those just joining us, here is the saga of the elder teletubbies:

1. in 2017 I posted a dream I had on Tumblr. In the dream I discovered that the childish teletubbies shown on BBC’s Teletubbies are merely the children of a species that grows up to be forest cryptids as adults. The post contained a detailed character description explaining how the children’s simple antennae become more complex antlers; their coats become thicker hair; their eldritch screens are unknowable; here, look:

The adult Teletubbies have more branching, complex antlers and shaggy coats. They are less brightly coloured. They are terrifyingly large. Their strangely human faces, emerging from the thick fur, are unquestionably adult; remote, serene, reproachful. Their television screens are glitchy, esoteric and unknowable. They are cryptids whose public exploitation has undermined their rarity and their strange, alien dignity.

That’s a pretty clear description.

2. The post quickly gained attention and many people drew art, made sculptures, designed in-depth character concepts, and even made DnD character sheets and entries with detailed notes. It was 2017. The post got over 90k notes. It had an extremely clear description of the cryptid in it. This wasn’t at all obscure.

3. The post and four pieces of the concept art, including the first piece by were screencapped and posted on r/tumblr. The post included this art by the now-deactivated @finoliatav which is, I think, the first piece of art. Most screencaps don’t show that it’s animated! Once you see it you can no longer pretend that any more work needs to be done in designing these characters, really - they’re all variations on a very clear theme.

4. A guy called Jars started drawing the BBC Teletubbies as adult Teletubbies. He noted on Reddit that his inspiration for the first one was the r/tumblr post but after that, he considered it entirely his own creative work. He drew each of the 4 BBC Teletubbies as adults using my character description and wrote a little story about how his character had stumbled upon them in the woods. He’s a good artist and his work went viral on Reddit and instagram. Those places being separate from Tumblr by the walls of the enclosure, they quickly believed the Jars was being highly original and praised him for it.

5. jars got carried away by his fame and started merchandising for all he’s worth. He’s selling elder teletubbies placemats. He got a collaborator to help him make and sell plushies.

6. Plushies of my character design applied to BBC characters. Jars sells them. To people. Who buy them. He sells these.

7. I think this is like… his job.

8. It has been years of this. I don’t think he has actually come up with anything else to sell by himself. But given that he now has millions upon millions of views on platforms I don’t use, let alone dominate (Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, TikTok) he seems to have fully subscribed to the idea that this is his THING.

9. After a while I wrote him a friendly email expressing that since my original dream was very much about discomfort with how the teletubbies were being exploited, I didn’t mind him selling his own art but that I wasn’t happy with him selling plushes based on my writing.

10. He wrote back along the lines of it all being his original intellectual property and absolutely nothing to do with me, etc, so jog on and don’t interfere.

11. I’m not entirely sure where the original intellectual property is when taking BBC characters and drawing them according to someone else’s detailed description of how to “evolve” them (branching antlers, shaggy coats, eldritch screens, serene adult human faces) especially having drawn them after seeing four separate detailed reference photos to base your own drawings on; especially when they’re the existing BBC characters from the show and not even your own. Like, Jars, you were given an entire detailed brief, several sets of references, an entire concept and a television show: the only artistic choices made here were to pick up your own personal pen and do the drawing. You have never deviated from my description, which you did not come up with yourself in any way. But okay Jars. You did some real intellectual heavy lifting here, this is Intellectual Property suddenly, and I guess this is your day job!

12. I myself actually have a day job, am capable of generating lots of other original material just for funsies, have never asked you guys for money, and I’m not generally huge jerk I don’t think. Also, I’m uncomfortable but have never been clear on how to stop him - I don’t think I can. So I don’t do much about this, apart from occasionally scream with hilarity with you guys about it.

13. Like this is the opposite of Goncharov. This is a guy making his wage on a 2017 tumblr collaborative shitpost insisting that this is the beautiful fruit of his only brain. And millions of people believe him.

14. There are now YouTube documentaries with millions of views and TikTok lore about Jars, and his lore, the Elder Teletubbies, which apparently he invented. People are making their wage talking about the history of Jars and his teletubbies lore. These documentaries are, if you can’t tell, not especially well-researched, as it is not difficult to find the original elder teletubbies art on the internet, which is all timestamped. Occasionally hilarious people from Tumblr point this out in the comments (thank you, you guys are hilarious) but the juggernaut is unstoppable!

15. Jars is now, apparently, doing a kickstarter to raise money for some kind of DnD sheets using the grown up BBC teletubbies.

16. I will point out that tumblr made and played with DnD teletubbies in 2017 for free and nobody had to pay $3000, but again. The juggernaut is unstoppable.

I have never, ever known what to do about this guy.

I have always been open to advice but genuinely never been able to articulate how it “damages” me, apart from ethical discomfort about how much I hate my writing being monetised by other people, especially when it was about my discomfort with exploitation. The juggernaut is unstoppable though. He fully intends to get thousands of dollars from this. He almost certainly will!
