hmm 🤔🤔 this is such a good question. i think heeyn as parents could be described as ‘in tune’ because they just know each other so well

for example,

y/n tried her best to keep calm and keep her voice quiet as she tried, for the tenth time, to get her daughter out of her room.

dahlia, the stubborn teenager that had her back to her mother, continued to ignore the figure in her doorway. she had heard her mother’s voice over the music in her headphone, she just chose not to answer.

“dahlia,” you said, much louder. this time, you were sure that your voice had gotten to her. when she continued to him, you exhaled and walked towards her, tapping her on her shoulder.

at this, your daughter turned her head. “oh,” she sighed as she removed her headphones. “what is it, mama?”

you tried not to sigh, hating how difficult it was so be gentle sometimes. you wanted to mention how you’ve been calling her name for a while, but chose to let it go.

“can you please help me in the kitchen? your father is ironing our clothes and your brother has already picked up all his toys.”

dahlia groaned and threw her head back on the chair like you asked her to trek to the nearest supermarket. you poked the inside of your cheek with your tongue, wanting to reprimand her behaviour, but there was no time for that now.

you made a mental note to call your mum and apologise for your teenage years. they aren’t easy to deal with and you’re leaning that first hand.

“do i have to? i’m in the middle of doing something.”

you glanced at her laptop and almost frowned. she was drawing, and while you silently applauded her work, you were sure she could take a break.

dahlia wasn’t usually like this, but she spent more time in her bedroom these days and was more snappier than usual.

you rest your hand on her shoulder and smile softly at her. “flower, please? i need your help.”

dahlia instantly felt a little bad at her mother’s words but not enough to really want to get up. she just wanted to chill in her room all day. why couldn’t you let her do that?

“i don’t really want to get up, mama. i’ll come down later.” dahlia put her headphones back on, dismissing you.

you blinked as you stood there. gently, you pried the headphones off her head and held them tightly, eyes sharpening at her frown.

“excuse me?” you crossed your arms and frowned at her. “i asked you to come and help me, so get up and help me.” your tone was a bit more stern, a bit colder. you didn’t like using it but alas.

“yeah, but i don’t want to get up.”

“dahlia—”

“i don’t want to help you! i don’t want to get up!”

at her outburst, your shoulders tensed and you stood up straighter. the gentleness in your eyes melted a bit and dahlia faltered at the stern look in your eyes.

you tried to be soft with your kids. you wanted to raise them differently than your parents, or your grandparents, but that didn’t mean tolerating disrespect.

when it came time to reprimand or punish, you always followed through.

“do not use that tone with me.” your voice was a little deeper, a tad bit angrier. dahlia’s eyes widened as she realized that you were angry with her. “i’m your mother. if i’m asking you for help, you will help.” you tilted your head and dahlia swallowed.

“dahlia,” came her father’s voice. you watched as dahlia’s head snapped towards the door and her eyes slightly widened at heeseung’s tone. he leaned against her doorway with his arms crossed.

heeseung walked into the room and stood a little bit behind you. his hand rested on your waist, rubbing circles into your skin to remind you that he’s right there with you.

having both of her parents frown down at her made her nervous and she shivered. she hadn’t even meant to raise her voice.

“you don’t raise your voice at your mother,” heeseung said. “if she’s asking you for help that you help her, regardless of what you’re doing.”

before dahlia can nod, you crouched down to meet her lowered eyes. there’s a bit of shame, guilt, and defiance swimming in them and you almost laughed. you must have been a handful for your parents.

you cupped your daughter’s chin and her bottom lip wobbled. “i know you just want to be in your room all day and spend time with anyone other than your family. your father and i were once teenagers too.” your lips quirk upwards and dahlia’s do too. “but being a teenager and growing up does not mean you get to disrespect your parents.”

dahlia slowly nodded and lifted her head. you stood up and heeseung’s hand rests on your lower back, keeping you steady.

he doesn’t say anything else, but he doesn’t need too. you’re perfectly content with him right there.

“i’m sorry,” dahlia said, her voice quiet and hoarse. “i didn’t mean to talk back.”

you ruffled her hair and stepped back. “i know.”

as a chronically ill person with asthenia and particular ways of speaking, i've always felt uncomfortable with how Frodo is treated as a weakling and a wimp by so many lotr fans. not only does it ignore how insanely heavy the weight of his burden is (regardless of how constantly the narrative and characters repeat it in like. extremely plain terms), but it often leads to ableist comments of "well other characters were in pain too and they dealt with it better, AND without whining all the time :/"

however, listening to the audiobook, i'm only now realising why i don't like the treatment of Sam's deference to Frodo and their interactions during their quest. yes, you can absolutely do a class analysis of their relationship (Frodo is his "master" in the aristocratic sense of the term, and the narrative treats is as a quality that he "knows his place" - subservience). yes, Frodo sometimes lashes out at Sam unjustly (which is treated as bad by the narrative, again very plainly)

but, and i cannot stress this enough, having a Sam by your side as a disabled person on any kind of adventure is literally the only way to stay alive. Sam notices his health fluctuations, is on the lookout for ring-symptoms that Frodo may not even have noticed yet, makes sure that Frodo has the accommodation he needs to be in as little pain as possible as they live through the great evils of their time... Frodo relies heavily on Sam's support. like any disabled person on a year-long march would need to. especially when your condition keeps worsening

it feels so incredibly loving and revolutionary that, in Rivendell, when he sees Frodo awake for the first time since Elrond healed him of the Morgul blade, Sam takes Frodo's left hand in his and shyly says he's glad it's warm again. i don't think Frodo knew how cold it'd gone, or thought anyone else had noticed, and indeed the narration moves on quickly. but those moments are constant and deeply touching. it's hard to articulate just how accurate Frodo's journey is to my own disabled journey, and how profound it is that Sam's care is foundational to saving the world

hello friend! i am sorry about your sad hockey feelings, but not too sorry because obviously i was on the other side rooting for the p.anthers the whole way 😅 but i do know how crushing it feels when the team you're rooting for loses, and i hope you can find comfort in your good memories from the season and start looking forward to next season soon!

re: leon's looming contract negotiations, under the cut because i got real chatty about it, whoops

i don't really have thoughts about what he SHOULD do, because my stance on player contracts is that they should always be based on what the player wants and thinks is best for themselves. even if it's not the ideal scenario for me personally! sometimes i'll be grumpy when a player's desires go against what EYE want but in my heart i am always in favor of workers having agency regarding their working conditions. in this house we love labor rights baby. i thought that leon did a very good job in his exit interview saying tactfully that he hasn't had time to think about his next contract yet (understandable!) and that it's going to take some time and discussions with both his agent and the o.ilers to figure out what happens next (and did a good job sticking to that talking point even as the e.dmonton media got quite frankly inappropriately aggressive about it).

i wouldn't blame leon if he wants to wait until the entire next season is over to decide what to do. the worst they could do is trade him at the deadline because they're mad he won't commit, and i think that would be pretty beyond the pale LOL. if he pushes his contract negotiations out past next july 1, it's possible he and connor could negotiate at the same time, if that's something they want to do or think would be beneficial. the o.ilers are in a tough spot right now with how fully half their roster needs to be re-signed or let go — something they have to be super tactical about if they want to keep the caliber of team they had this season — and then bouch's contract is up the same time as leon's, and that kid deserves a big payday, and then obviously they'll need the money available to re-sign connor the next year. even with the salary cap going up a significant amount, i can see there being concern in leon's camp about the o.ilers having the ability to pay him what he's worth. he is already grossly underpaid and even wanting to stay there is only so much of a discount a player of his caliber can conscionably allow a team.

i do think he loves his teammates in e.dmonton. he loves playing with connor. those are definitely things that matter when it comes to contract negotiations, too. i also think that making it to the scf this year puts him under unique pressure to stay (which is another reason he might want to wait until after the coming season to figure out his next move! it would not be strange at all if he did; so many players do their contract crap in the off-season anyway!) but obviously it's also not out of the question that the o.ilers make a concerted effort to get him the contract he wants and get it done early so everyone can relax, lol.

i personally wouldn't hate seeing him play somewhere else (excluding on teams i hate, obvs), which i know sounds like sacrilege but it's for the totally selfish reason of i just so rarely root for the o.ilers and i think it'd be fun for ME to have him on a team i'm more all-in on, lol. it's truly nothing against (most of) the o.ilers players, they have some players that i'm super fond of! and some good narratives going on up there too! but my deep and ceaseless loathing of daryl k.atz easily outstrips all of that and is my unwavering guiding star here. fuck that guy fr.

so tl;dr i hope that whatever leon does is what he wants and what feels right to him. a lot of people are going to have a lot of opinions about what he should do but we don't know what's in his heart! i hope the o.ilers are respectful of the process and of whatever time he needs to take to decide, whether it's like two weeks or all season.
