Zoom, the company that normalized attending business meetings in your pajama pants, was forced to unmute itself this week to reassure users that it would not use personal data to train artificial intelligence without their consent.

A keen-eyed Hacker News user last week noticed that an update to Zoom’s terms and conditions in March appeared to essentially give the company free rein to slurp up voice, video, and other data, and shovel it into machine learning systems.

The new terms stated that customers “consent to Zoom’s access, use, collection, creation, modification, distribution, processing, sharing, maintenance, and storage of Service Generated Data” for purposes including “machine learning or artificial intelligence (including for training and tuning of algorithms and models).”

The discovery prompted critical news articles and angry posts across social media. Soon, Zoom backtracked. Soon, Zoom backtracked. On Monday, Zoom’s chief product officer, Smita Hasham, wrote a blog post stating, “We will not use audio, video, or chat customer content to train our artificial intelligence models without your consent.” The company also updated its terms to say the same.  Later in the week, Zoom updated its terms again, to clarify to say that it would not feed "audio, video, chat, screen sharing, attachments, or other communications like customer content (such as poll results, whiteboard, and reactions)" to AI models. Vera Ranneft, a spokesperson for the company, says Zoom has not previously used customer content this way.

Those updates seem reassuring enough, but of course many Zoom users or admins for business accounts might click “OK” to the terms without fully realizing what they’re handing over. And employees required to use Zoom may be unaware of the choice their employer has made. One lawyer notes that the terms still permit Zoom to collect a lot of data without consent.

The kerfuffle shows the lack of meaningful data protections at a time when the generative AI boom has made the tech industry even more hungry for data than it already was. Companies have come to view generative AI as a kind of monster that must be fed at all costs—even if it isn’t always clear what exactly that data is needed for or what those future AI systems might end up doing.

The ascent of AI image generators like DALL-E 2 and Midjourny, followed by ChatGPT and other clever-yet-flawed chatbots, was made possible thanks to huge amounts of training data—much of it copyrighted—that was scraped from the web. And all manner of companies are currently looking to use the data they own, or that is generated by their customers and users, to build generative AI tools.

Zoom is already on the generative bandwagon. In June, the company introduced two text-generation features for summarizing meetings and composing emails about them. Zoom could conceivably use data from its users’ video meetings to develop more sophisticated algorithms. These might summarize or analyze individuals’ behavior in meetings, or perhaps even render a virtual likeness for someone whose connection temporarily dropped or hasn’t had time to shower.

The problem with Zoom’s effort to grab more data is that it reflects the broad state of affairs when it comes to our personal data. Many tech companies already profit from our information, and many of them like Zoom are now on the hunt for ways to source more data for generative AI projects. And yet it is up to us, the users, to try to police what they are doing.

“Companies have an extreme desire to collect as much data as they can,” says Janet Haven, executive director of the think tank Data and Society. “This is the business model—to collect data and build products around that data, or to sell that data to data brokers.”

The US lacks a federal privacy law, leaving consumers more exposed to the pangs of ChatGPT-inspired data hunger than people in the EU. Proposed legislation, such as the American Data Privacy and Protection Act, offers some hope of providing tighter federal rules on data collection and use, and the Biden administration’s AI Bill of Rights also calls for data protection by default. But for now, public pushback like that in response to Zoom’s moves is the most effective way to curb companies’ data appetites. Unfortunately, this isn’t a reliable mechanism for catching every questionable decision by companies trying to compete in AI.

In an age when the most exciting and widely praised new technologies are built atop mountains of data collected from consumers, often in ethically questionable ways, it seems that new protections can’t come soon enough. “Every single person is supposed to take steps to protect themselves,” Haven says. “That is antithetical to the idea that this is a societal problem.”

from what i can tell most batcest accounts are pretty chill however i'm only speaking from the perspective of tim centric accounts. in terms of things such as "etiquette" there's only a few things most accounts do to sort of identify and differentiate each other.

- if you're following nsfw account or making nsfw tweets be sure to include that in your description whether that means having 'minors dni', 18+, 🔞, your age and an nsfw warning' it varies.

-you don't have to do this, in fact i don't even do it but it might make it easier to find mutuals, and that's to include your favorite ships in your bio as well! mentioning things like jaytim, jaydick, brutim, brudami, etc. a lot of batcest accounts have multiple ships that spread over different characters so them listing it makes it easier for people to see what they're about!

-inluding the link of your ao3/linking your twitter in your ao3 fics is a good way for people to follow your work! a lot of people might recognize your fics if they click on your ao3 fic and you can become mutuals like that!

in terms of how to interact with other accounts i get being nervous!! i definitely was when i first started posting my tim tweets!!! even now when i interact with mutuals i've been interacting with for a while I still get a little nervous sometimes!

but i do have some tips that I think have helped interact with others and keep it fun for everyone!❤️❤️❤️

- if a tweet talks about 2 specific characters or a specific ship and you really like the idea but don't care for the ship don't directly reply to the person saying something like "THIS but with x- instead would be so good!". i know wanting to give recognition for an idea is tempting but it's rude to try and change the intent of someone's tweet.

instead: you can make your own tweet and include something like "just saw someone on my tl talking about x-topic and now i can't stop thinking about y+z in that situation-" that way you're acknowledging the outside source but also not changing the tune of someone else's tweet

- if a lot of people on your timeline are all talking about the same idea and they're all coming out with their own spins and you have no idea who started it that's okay! twitter can be a bit of an echo chamber sometimes and no one's going to go through all their mutuals and find who tweeted what first. plus the very nature of art is that it often repeats itself.

if you want to join in: you can say something like "my tl is full of people about x and let me just say that-"

- emojis are your friend! i use them a lot because i have a hard time reading tone from text and think everyone else might too. when you're reading something it's hard to pick out whether someone is joking or saying something sarcastically without any indicators (ex. /joke /sarcasm at the end of a sentence, wrItInG LIkE tHiS tO MakE suRe someone knows they're being mocked/made fun of).

adding an emoji can really help change the tone of what you're saying making it sound less like you're stating a fact or making a demand or some other misinterpretation.

you can tell there's a few tonal differences between the statements which helps ease the slide of interaction (at least I think so!) by making it clear you're joking or being humorous.

- it's common to see people adding onto each other's threads and while you may be nervous about who is okay with it at first, the general rule of thumb is that on twitter anyone can add on to anyone's thread or respond whether you follow them or not (i don't think anyone will even notice who is following who) but if it does make you anxious you can click on their profile and look at their replies to see if they've replied to other people's threads or been replied to.

you can reply even if two people are already having a convo, you can just split off and start a new one! ive seen and had multiple split off convos with different people from the same original thread who all had different ideas or things to add on.

ultimately a lot of conversations on twitter are people prodding each other's brains for their shared interests and mutuals come about from people seeing that someone has similar interests and is talking about them and so follow because they also like that thing and would love to see more of people talking about that thing!!!

try following people who share a lot of your interests in terms of ships and characters.

mutuals may take a little while (in some cases ive done two scrolls of a person's account and immediatly followed them back without any interaction because we both clearly had the same interests) if you want exact steps of how that might happen you could start with

a. commenting on people's threads. telling them you loved it, reacting to it, sending emojis. etc.

b. send tweets about your thoughts, headcanons, aus, etc. don't feel discouraged if no one likes them yet you're just starting!

c. after you've gotten comfortable with commenting with an account you can start adding more to the interaction, adding on, proposing a direction for the tweet, etc.

these are just a few of the things ive learned and seen and nothing here is fully concrete either so if you feel more comfortable doing something else then feel free!!!

besides in the first conversation i ever had with one of my current mutuals i revealed to them that i'd secretly written an entire fic about one of their tweets even though we'd, until that point, never talked even once 😭

rnbo knows the subtwts exist, he’s most definitely seen *at least* some of their tweets (he might even be lurking), and his behavior aligns with the rise of fdtwt. undeniably, it is mostly if not completely their fault that rnbo is acting the way he is with tbo rn. and everyone knows that

I think it was kate winslet who said that there are many actors who are LGTBI+ who don't say publicly that they are for fear of rejection or fear that it will stand in the way of their being cast in straight roles, and it is sad. Unlike the other slaves, you never thought it could be a way for you to get rid of your chains and flee: as someone who was born enslaved, you knew you wouldn't last too long in those lands without a master and you knew masters at the Mediterranean wouldn't take you for things different from what you were already doing.

And you were tired of being a bed slave.

So maybe the raiders were your chance to get a new master and different tasks.

However, your master had paid a lot for you and he didn't want to lose his property. He tied your hands to one another and tied you to his arm to warrant you wouldn't flee. And so, he started pulling you with him through the city, trying to get a way out. Unlike him, you were trying to find a way to get your hands free and when you saw that angry blonde man swinging a heavy sword towards your master, you sunk your feet on the ground and pulled your hands, forcing him one step back, causing that blonde man's sword to cut out his hand, leaving you with the bloody piece of your former master tied to your hands.

As an answer, your master pulled a sword towards that man and so you quickly picked a stone on the ground and with your hands tied together you ran towards him, hitting the pig with the stone against his head until he stopped answering.

The blonde man's sword touched your chin and you lifted your face, looking at him, meekly. Asking whatever was looking for a slave like you that man could be a benevolent one and not some douchebag as the master you just killed. Especially because that strange giant was really bigger than you and if he was a bad man, then, you would be surely condemned.

You took a time to clean his strands as he allowed his body to relax in the water that was still warm, probably from the bath prepared for the former owner of that house.

Once clean, you dried his hair and braided the strands again, settling the leather in a different way to keep the strands together and the braid firm.

He came out of the water, not minding you were seeing his nakedness. And pointed the bathtub, looking at you.

"Bath," he said, and you saw in his eyes he was waiting for you to repeat, which you did properly.

"Bath."

Causing him to smile again.

Björn so lifted his index pointing you.

"You, bath," and pointed again the bathtub before leaving through the hall, allowing you to do something you didn't in a long while: to take a bath without anyone else touching your body.

In that night, he didn't touch you.

When you came back to his bed, he was already sleeping and you slept by his side. It was the same in the following nights.

Björn taught you his language, appearing to be more interested in your skills than he was in your body. And in return, you put some good effort, learning pretty fast how to communicate with him.

They spent around two months in that town and it was enough for you to know how to understand him, name his brother and his men, and speak properly for him to understand.

You told him your story and he used it to show you more words in his language.

And the travel back to his lands was magical.

You never thought Björn could come from such cold and distant lands! He found beauty in your innocence and the way you were fascinated by the snow. Every detail in you seemed to make him more and more solicitous.

i really frickin wish we could come up with a good prefix terminology for aroaces bc i'm sure aroace peeps themselves feel a lil clunky having to say /both/ parts of the sam when others can just be like "i'm bi" without having to be like "im birobisexual" or whatever - like bc saying bi/pan/etc alone implies sex/romance both (although of course some peeps dont want to explain their whole thing off the bat to someone, but ya get my point hopefully). aroaces though? a-. the prefix is just an a (1)

like you cant go “im a” bc in the english language thats just so confusing bc of the word a. Heck, the best thing i could think of was ana- with combining the a- and -an prefixes, but it feels like something that wouldnt catch on bc there’s already an ana- prefix that has a separate meaning of up/against/back which isn’t intuitive like the others… idk i just wish i knew more about language to come up with a more solid possible answer to this (2)if we could /just/ come up with a good/intuitive term/prefix thats not counterintuitive or confusing, i feel like it’d greatly help with communication and heck search engines too. if you look for aro youre gonna find aroace stuff, and did with ace - doesn’t matter if you wanted just /plain/ aroallo stuff, the search results are gonna be mostly aroace bc ‘aro’ shows up in 'aroace.’ (3)

Oh yeah, I’ve definitely tried to just say “I’m A” and well, it does the work, but only for lack of a better solution. The issue is just that the privative prefix is a single letter of course, so maybe changing it could be a solution. I don’t know for “ana-” but I may try researching privative suffixes. Does anyone have an idea outside of privative suffixes though? 

If we’re going to make up a new word to replace aroace, we may as well change a bit of the terminology! No idea is coming to my mind at the moment of course, it would be too easy haha. But like, maybe there are other ways of expressing “aroace” without the privative prefix. We should probably keep the usual orientation construction because the goal isn’t to get too far of the rest of the lgbtq+ community, but outside of that, we’re free to try whatever.

With what you said about search engines, then maybe yeah, keeping “aro” out of the word would help. Now, I have no experience in coining words, and I don’t know what makes terms stay or disappear. Guess we’ll see!
