One detail I really like about the new Batman and Robin: Year One comics is how Bruce stands. He doesn't stand straight, he leans against the closest wall or furniture, he crosses his arms or has his hands on his hips or in his pockets, he crosses his legs. It's reminiscing of older comics, where they would made him serve without realizing.

It was my sole duty to distract Lestat, but in his mirrored eyes the distraction reflected back onto me. And in the dead center of the whispering gallery, I lost the thread to my plotting and fell once more into the well with no bottom. I was his and he was mine.

This was nodded to in the last scene of my first winteragent fic, but I want to talk about this John Walker headcanon of mine more: John is actually quite a nurturing person. But he's not the type to make a big fuss over it; he's very subtle and does it almost subconsciously.

I think part of it comes from having been married and being a dad, that watching out and caring for his loved ones is second nature to him. And you may say, "but sparrow, we saw him being a deadbeat dad in the movie!" To which I say yes! We did, and it was clearly shown that it happened during a very low point in his life, and then even just reflecting on it literally pushed him to near suicidal tendencies. With how badly it got to him that he had acted that way, I think it implies that he expected better of himself! I.e., that he's normally more caring and nurturing!

We also saw in the movie him watching out for the other Thunderbolts time and time again. I love this post that points out how he made sure he and the girls ate something once they were stranded in the desert, and how he probably did similar stuff as a soldier; he likely watched out for and took care of his fellow soldiers, not just in battle, but through smaller gestures like food.

So I just really like to headcanon that as they all live in the tower together, John subtly watches out for and takes care of the others. Maybe he holds the door open as they all walk into the room; maybe he hands Yelena her water bottle during a break in training when he went to grab his own; maybe he's the one to drape a blanket over Ava or Bob's lap when they're watching TV and comment about it being cold in the room; maybe he hands Bucky the keys to his motorcycle or Alexei the keys to his limo when he noticed they forgot to place them in their usual bowl by the door and knows they'll think they're lost later. I think he'd do all of these things wordlessly, no scolding or even pointing out that he's done them a favor--because he doesn't see it that way. He's just keeping his team looked after, the way they look out for him during combat.

At first the others find this surprising, but slowly it clicks that it is just the way he's always looked after his people, and now they're his people. Yelena starts making sure to say quick thank yous at the gestures, even though John only ever gives a nonchalant nod in response; Alexei and Bob follow her lead, doing the same. Ava makes sure to never make a smart remark when he's doing something like this.

To put my winteragent slant on things, Bucky is definitely the most affected by this. He's so used to being alone, having to watch out for himself, that these small gestures really get to him. Especially since Bucky and him got off on such a bad start, the fact that John still does these things for him with no hesitation, fills Bucky with all kinds of feelings; Bucky could only ever hope to be forgiven for all he's done, maybe he owes that to John as well.

And the way John never makes a big fuss over it really helps Bucky to be able to accept the help. Bucky's instinct is to fight it, to tell John to not worry about him. But he resists the instinct, because it feels good, and it's not being made into a big deal. It's simple, and it's nice, to be a little taken care of, to be considered and watched out for. So he's quiet about it, maybe mutters a thanks when John hands him his leather jacket as the team is heading out the door, but he actually adores it. Maybe he tries harder to start looking out for John, too.
