Thinking a lot about how, in a series filled with liars and deceivers, when it comes to keeping big secrets, Wei Wuxian and Nie Huaisang lie in the exact same way.

In terms of truly big secrets that they have to keep for a long time, Nie Huaisang has one and Wei Wuxian has two. Huaisang's is the collective secret of his grand plot to destroy Jin Guangyao and avenge his brother, and Wwx's are the loss of his golden core and his post-resurrection true identity. And how do both of them go about covering the parts of themselves that they most want to hide? They play up their own existing traits and lean as hard as they can into their more negative public perceptions.

When Wei Wuxian wants to hide the fact that he's lost his golden core, he does it by putting on a show of arrogance, and this can only work as long as it does because ego is already such a big part of his personality. Young Wwx was already known as a willful, trouble-making rule breaker, so nobody's going to question it when he starts showing up to events without his sword. They might ask "what the hell is that kid doing?" but they can always answer their own question with, "Well he's Wei Wuxian. He's always been a disrespectful and done as he pleased."

Wwx never pretends to be anyone or anything but himself in his first life, but he dials up certain facets of "himself" to make the public think what he wants them to. Pretending to be the person that the outside world expects him to be makes a very good disguise, because it's against others' nature to question it.

And we can argue about how effective it is, but Wei Wuxian tries to do a version of the exact same thing when he gets brought back as Mo Xuanyu. He hears that Mxy was gay and a "lunatic" and says "well if you want insane, then you'll get insane." He leans as hard as he can into that public expectation, because if Mo Xuanyu is behaving like exactly the annoying, openly queer freak that everyone expects him to be, no one's going to wonder who else he might be.

Meanwhile, Huaisang uses more or less the exact same defense mechanism when he starts racking up things to hide. Based on his repeating school as a teen and late formation of his golden core, he presumably has a reputation from a young age as not the sharpest tool in the shed. People know him as the Nie brother who cares little for cultivation and developed far too slow to make use of his saber. To be unkind about it, he's a useless little dandy unfit to ever inherit his clan.

So when Huaisang wants to be sure that no one will suspect he's making moves behind the scenes, he leans into that and leans into it hard. He makes everyone think they're right—he is an idiot unfit to run his clan. But nobody's going to look twice at a fool, and nobody will suspect subterfuge of the head shaker.

Once again, though, Huaisang's act only works because people expect him to turn into a leader like the head shaker. The same act wouldn't have worked so well for someone like Wei Wuxian, because even though they disliked him, people knew he was talented and dangerous. Only Nie Huaisang can get away with playing useless for a decade, because he's playing as hard as he can into the worst of his established public persona. Others mistaking him for a fool lets him trick them into thinking that he is one.

Nobody wants to question you when you're confirming their expectations, and Wei Wuxian and Nie Huaisang both know how to use that to their advantage. It's easy to keep a secret when your cover story is something the public is already primed to hear.

anyway i can’t believe this still needs to be said but wei wuxian is not (and never has been) a stupid person! he has a clearly brilliant technical mind for cultivation and a clearly brilliant creative mind for inventions but he’s also never been “bad” at his own emotions or feelings. he was a teenager who liked to play around and then he was a slightly older teenager who was still trying to figure himself out, just like many teenagers (fictional and real) are still trying to figure themselves out, and plus he was dealing with more pressing issues like Stopping A Genocide and Not Dying throughout it all. he quite literally did not have the free time for self-reflection until he was resurrected. i know we all like to joke about how many signs he missed in the romance department but none of those cues were missed because wwx is dumb. they were missed for the above reasons and because he was thrown into a murder mystery plot immediately after being brought back to life, which maybe occupied the majority of his thoughts, and also because the romance cues were coming from lan wangji. i would challenge anyone to pick up on those man’s emotions without being his brother or a reader with preexisting knowledge of the situation. let’s see how well YOU would do

Jiang Cheng brings back WWX to LP after his resurrection because LWJ wasn't around

Five Fun Facts About The Fic I Might Write About It, This Is A Slowburn(?) Version, For Other Versions Ask Again:

WWX insists that he's not himself far past the point of it being sensible. The thing is, it's not the first time JC decided some random demonic cultivator was WWX and dragged him home to demande apologies and play house? Last time was over half a decade ago, so not everyone in the sect knows, but those who remember are pretty wary about it, especially because of what it means about JC's mental state. Is Sect Leader getting worse again? They're also very wary of WWX, some of them openly contemptuous - WWX has the feeling that if it weren't for JC's protection he would be dead - and some of them almost pitying. I think he overhears them talk and that's how he pieces together the backstory, and also learns that the demonic cultivator whom JC is convinced are WWX and that he treats as such don't... end well. Sect Leader takes the "betrayal" badly.

WWX realizes that YMJ doesn't have a second in command. the sect has a person who performs the tasks associated with the job, but JC doesn't have a "second-in-command", never did. it just stuck that way. it sure doesn't mean anything. probably. how weird of JC though.

the Ghost General intrudes on Lotus Pier. There's a fight, JC tries to take down WN, WWX orders WN away from JC, JC freaks out. WWX keeps swearing up and down he's not WWX, honest!!! but... on the other hand... the Ghost General recognizes him as its his master... this is what breaks JC's hopes, finally, and also WWX's heart. You get JC crying as he asks WWX "are you really not him?" and WWX doing the equivalent of Cyrano's "No, my sweet love, I never loved you!" but for who he is, with less clear-cut emotional consequences than in the play (this is because WWX is not dying and thus more invested in keeping the lie up and JC is way less certain that WWX cares about him than Roxane did about Cyrano). They sort of compromise on the understanding that "MXY" is kinda-sorta WWX, but without most of WWX's memories. (WWX is telling himself that's not what he wanted but in fact he's much more comfortable/confident with himself and being in YMJ afterwards!) this is probably when WWX realizes that while his room may not exist anymore, his things are in JC's room.

JC struggles with this WWX being an innocent lamb who has no memory of doing anything wrong in his life ever. He should've expected it. How convenient. But, y'know, a WWX is a WWX, and this also extremely conveniently lets JC off the hook of this pesky "remember how he orphaned your nephew?" thing! It's mostly JC's own guilt now. Mostly. He's not going to do anything against WWX even if it wasn't anyway. Also it's. terrifying. Because WWX has no memory of him, but WWX is around, and also there isn't anyone to judge JC for wanting-- ANYWAY.

They end up having to leave Lotus Pier and catch up with the main plot when WWX gets a spider sense that WN is in trouble. There are no words to explain how little JC likes 1)that the Ghost General is still a thing, 2)that the Ghost General is still a thing when it comes to WWX, 3)that WWX is planning on leaving LP to help WN, so he comes with. WWX tries to convince him not to, but surprises himself by accepting JC's help when JC insists in a clipped tone. The trouble that WN got in also involves JL being in danger. This is my fic so it would turn out that WN tried to protect JL before WWX and JC caught up. Possibly JL and WN have been getting in plot-relevant shenanigans offscreen for a while now, and there's definitely a fic there, what with WN thinking A-Yuan is dead and projecting on JL and JL getting conflicted feelings about the person/thing that killed his father, but that's not the focus in this story. At some point - because by now he's pretty certain JC will not either kill him or reject him - WWX "admits" that his memory has been returning. Not all of it, but enough. If we're all very very lucky JL has been in sufficient danger that JC can lose his head a little and kiss WWX for saving JL's life, or something along these lines. If we're not lucky that part happens beyond the scope of these five things.

The song within WWX's heart

Hearing LWJ softly singing Wangxian for the first time, back when they were trapped in the Xuanwu of Slaughter's cave, left a profound impression on WWX. Even if he was slipping in and out of consciousness at the time, it still affected him deeply. On a subconscious level, this melody means so much to WWX and the way MXTX weaves this delicately throughout the plot is just perfection.

The first time we see WWX play Wangxian he is using a hastily improvised bamboo flute, while on Dafan Mountain. This is prior to WWX or indeed the reader (on a first read) being aware of its name or the significance it holds.

To stifle it, Wei WuXian calmed his feelings and assuredly played another melody. The melody had drifted over his mind naturally. It was relaxed and tranquil, contrasting with the bizarre and ear-piercing one from before

Chapter 10 ExR translations

WWX calms his emotions and tires to relax. Trying to think of something happy, something soothing, that will quell WNs killing intent. Which is when this tune naturally comes to his mind. Hearing the song instantly pacifies WN and he begins to follow WWX.

Just prior to this, WWXs emotions were incredibly high and very raw. Only a few days ago, he was forcefully resurrected into a stranger's body. He's had an altercation with JC and inadvertently upset his beloved late shijie's son. Then he bumps into the man he's been subconsciously pining for since they were teenagers. With his mind stirring up painful memories from his past life, it's so poignant that this is the song that resurfaces in his subconscious. As something that makes him feel safe and secure.

After the above, it's not* until the Xuanwu of Slaughter cave arc that we are finally unofficially introduced to Wangxian. In this chapter LWJ showcases his beautiful singing voice to a very drowsy WWX, who is slipping in and out of consciousness. We later find out that this is the aptly named Wangxian, a love song that LWJ has composed especially for WWX.

It had originally been an offhand remark. He was chatting with Lan WangJi to pass the time and didn’t at all expect him to agree. Yet, after a few moments of silence, a low yet mild voice echoed softly through the hollow cave. Lan WangJi really did begin to sing. Wei WuXian closed his eyes, turned around, and spread out his limbs, “It sounds nice.” He asked, “What’s it called?” Lan WangJi seemed to murmur something. Wei WuXian opened his eyes, “What was it called again?”

Chapter 55

MXTX doesn't give us much in terms of a description of the melody at this point, probably in an attempt to keep most of the readers guessing a little longer with regards to how LWJ knew it was WWX back on Dafan Mountain. But we can see WWX appreciates the tune and seems quite content with everything at that very moment. Over the past few days, since beating the legendary beast, WWX has been running a fever. LWJ has been diligently looking after him, passing him spiritual energy and keeping a fire lit in order to keep him warm - which WWX obviously appreciates. There is also a very sweet moment where he questions if LWJ had been allowing him to lie on his lap while he was drowsy. It's a very tender scene and marks a definite turning point in their relationship - especially on LWJ's behalf.

The next time we see WWX play Wangxian, is back in his second life - where he's very much starting to accept his feelings for LWJ. The feelings he's had since they were young are flooding to the surface and he's blissfully content just being around the other. They are on their way to the very place he died years ago, but he's so drunk on the way he is feeling about LWJ, he doesn't care at all. He feels incredibly safe and happy with him - which is when he inadvertently plays their love song once more.

He even had the spirit to enjoy the fields under the moonlight, pulling out the bamboo flute at his waist. As natural as ever, he played a tune. The flute had a limpid timbre. Lan WangJi’s footsteps hesitated slightly as Wei WuXian felt something inside of him suddenly light up.

Chapter 66

Just prior to the above scene, WWX is feeling loved, cared for and so happy his heart won't stop fluttering! He's remembering his parents, the love they had for each other and for him. All of these lovely images filling his head and beautiful feelings flooding his heart. Just as he is so happy and content, a melody comes drifting in his mind and he plays it on the flute under the moonlight once again.

It comes so naturally to him, because this is how he felt when he heard it originally. He felt happy, even though he was stuck in a cave and suffering from a fever - which is quite telling about how he must feel at LP at times! He felt cared for. He felt quite content rolling around on someone's LWJ's lap, while his head was tenderly stroked. He was lulled back to an unconscious state, hearing LWJ sing this melody to him as he felt all of these sweet emotions. He felt these so strongly, that the tune imprinted on his heart, and in turn his memory for all these years. A song can be a powerful thing, especially when associated with strong emotions.

WWX finally remembers where he has heard the tune before and is absolutely ecstatic to learn that LWJ not only composed the melody, but he is the only one to have heard it.

To me, there is definitely a strong chance that WWX also plays Wangxian during the Phoenix Mountain arc. This is probably more apparent on a re-read, once you are more familiar with the description of Wangxian later in the novel.

He held up Chenqing and blew into it, fingers shifting. The clear sound of the flute rushed into the sky as though it was a bird, lingering as it echoed through the mountain.

Chapter 69

WWX has just been flirting with LWJ, throwing flowers at him and trying to attract his attention. So it's safe to assume LWJ is on his mind, even if he is currently participating in a competition. Taking up a comfy spot on a low hanging branch of a tree, he basks in the sunlight feeling relaxed and comfortable. He is about to calm the fierce corpses and ghosts, summoning them to surrender in the Jiang sect's name. As such, he plays a soothing song on Chenqing that is clear, melodious and soared like birds in the sky. To me, at least on a re-read, it is quite obvious WWX is playing Wangxian here. As we are given more descriptions of the tune later in the novel, it all pieces together quite nicely.

WWX playing Wangxian at this moment in time also adds to why LWJ simply lost control and kissed him not long after he played on his flute. WWX had inadvertently played their love song! The very song LWJ had composed just for him! Not to mention the teasing and flirting WWX subject him to earlier on as well. Of course I'm not condoning LWJ's actions, but considering his character, it's no wonder he lost control and forcibly kissed WWX after all of this. Especially if he heard the almost teasing tune of his love song being played on a flute in the distance.

The last time we see Wangxian being played is of course at the end of the novel, when we finally learn what the melody is called.

Swaying left and right atop the donkey, Wei WuXian took the flute from his waist and placed it by his lips. The limpid notes flew across the sky like birds. Lan WangJi halted and listened quietly. It was the song he sang for Wei WuXian when they were stuck in the Xuanwu cave. It was also the song that Wei WuXian just so happened to have played at Dafan Mountain, the song that enabled Lan WangJi to confirm his identity.

Chapter 113

We can see the melody is described as limpid (or clear) in tone and the song evokes images of birds flying in the sky. This description is very similar to the quotes referenced above, which I think is very much intentional. If WWX did play Wangxian to calm the entities down on Phoenix Mountain, as he did with WN at the beginning of the novel, how sweet is it that he uses this song to soothe the poor souls that are in turmoil and full of resentment.

I think there is quite a lot of subtext hinting that WWX playing Wangxian at the beginning of the novel is far from a happy accident. That it is in fact something he has done since hearing the tune all those years ago. It even states in the novel, he plays the tune "as natural as ever", which could be interpreted as he's played this tune many, many times in the past - during both of his lives.

Another scene that could possibly include WWX playing Wangxian once again, is during the chapter when we first meet DrunkJi.

Stopping at a desolated area, Wei WuXian took out his flute by his waist, placed it by his lips, and played a melody. After this, he waited silently.

Chapter 30

Obviously we don't have enough of a description here to tell if WWX just played Wangxian to summon WN. But it would add to the reason why an inebriated LWJ reacts in such a jealous way towards WN when he appears on the scene. Especially as he seems particularly annoyed at WWX playing his flute for WN. Granted, it might just be because he drunkenly stumbled upon WWX and WN together when he woke up from his intoxicated catnap. With LWJ still feeling the sting from WWX unwittingly playing their exclusive love song to another man back on Dafan Mountain. Awkward...

But it could also be LWJ being roused from his drunken slumber to the tantalising sound of a flute playing their song.

I totally headcanon WWX humming the melody throughout his first life. Soothing an upset A-Yuan with this lovely tune. Harvesting radishes while he sings to himself quietly. Tinkering with his inventions in the cave, while whistling the melody and hearing it reverberate all around him. The Wen remnants and the crazy Yiling Laozu cultists camping out at the base of the mountain with their little banner, would even swear they could hear a calming song softly echo around the burial mounds in the middle of the night at times.

There's just no way he didn't hum or play Wangxian after her heard it drifting in and out of consciousness. Especially as he can remember it so clearly in his second life, whenever he's really happy or needs to calm down.

In fact, I really wouldn't be surprised if LWJ hummed Wangxian to WWX while passing him spiritual energy when they were hiding in a cave after escaping Nightless City.

It also makes me wonder if WWX used this melody to calm the entities in the Burial Mounds back when he was trapped there. Every time we have seen WWX use a tune to calm corpses, it's (possibly) been this tune. It's not too much of a jump to assume he used it in the Burial Mounds to suppress the resentful energy at the time. It was probably very much fresh in his memory still at this point - only a month or so since he first heard the tune.

How beautiful would it be if the song that LWJ composed out of love for WWX is what essentially helped calm the resentful entities and save his soulmate's life while he was trapped in a literal hell on earth.

Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if someone had successfully convinced JC that they were a resurrected WWX. Not for any serious plot threads (that would be very difficult to pull off I think) but just because I wanna make WWX squirm with the fact that some stranger is sleeping with JC while pretending to be him. Maybe not even sleeping just having his fond attention. Perhaps it would be easier if the imposter wasn't human?

It's just so frustrating how he keeps running away from JC that I wanna give his a reason to run back. Choose WWX, the imposter gives you the perfect cover up to go away forever, will you take it?

Mo Xuanyu's family bites the dust and Wei Wuxian is on his way to Yinmeng, to kick ass and take names.

When he's finally there - conveniently hidden behind a new face and an excuse of a tragically lost family - he's taken in by the sect used to picking up strays (and doesn't that feel familiar?) and it's only the last remaining braincell that's tops him from marching into he sect leaders rooms and demanding answers.

No, he needs to first figure it out. He needs proof that the "him" they know is not him.

(I got a very interesting ask on CC and I want to elaborate more because I answered it very briefly at the time)

First of all, I don’t think the coffin ending is just or deserved for either nmj or jgy - and I don’t think shoving lxc into it makes it any better, or gives any sort of closure. I do think that in some moments of despair Lan Xichen may have wished to be dead as well, but that has nothing to do with a desire to “be with them” (being buried with two non-sentient corpses who are fighting in a horrifying way for a century is not really ideal) and more with a desire to escape his guilt about stabbing JGY. [as an aside I also think the coffin is very much a convenient plot device to tie up all loose ends neatly so wangxian need not to worry about it in the happy ending, and people give it sometimes more significance than intended, but that’s just my personal interpretation!]

Anyway! Grief is irrational, of course, so Lan Xichen may think he wants to die and be torn apart by corpse monsters for a minute there, but he will never do it, and you know why? Because A-Yao saved his life. It is narratively understandable that Lan Xichen, a symbol of hope throughout the story, has his Hope snuffed out at the end and we are left unsure whether he will ever be able to recover. But he simply can’t die, because A-Yao pushed him away to let him live!

So that leaves option B - live on with guilt and regrets and, ideally, do something about it. Where you take this is up to you (Protect the watchtowers? Just try to do good by orphans and commoners? Become immortal to wait for that century to pass?) but I just want to append a note that I don’t think resurrecting JGY necessarily means going to the dark side! Save for, well, in the literal sense i.e. demonic cultivation. ;)

also damn, WWX is right there. Maybe in 10-20 years he’ll get bored enough to decide to do a good deed for Lan Xichen’s 50th birthday or something. God knows he deserves it.

I think part of the threatening to summon lwj with jin king thing is partly like. wwx is HORRIBLE at reading people. like he’s charming. he draws people in. he’s extremely clever and brilliant. but I, personally, think he’s an idiot when it comes to reading people!

almost every wangxian interpretation I’ve ever seen has some iteration of ‘wwx can read lwj while lwj seems expressionless’ and I am always FLOORED how people got that from any of the media. the person who can read lwj is his brother! not wei at the time of my death the man who hated me and my demonic cultivation most was non other than hanguang jun wuxian. not wei lan zhan has a crush on mianmiam wuxian. not wei I couldn’t admit to myself I wanted to sleep with lwj until after I died and got resurrected and we’re all being held hostage wuxian.

fic writers out here are like ‘wwx understands lwj best!’ meanwhile xichen is over here on his fourth cup of ‘insert number of days’ since lwj has been irrational about the cultivation world’s number 1 criminal now that wen ruohan is dead’ coffee like

ANON YOU ARE CORRECT ON ALL POINTS IMO. The very first thing that made me go "ohhhh, I don't think I like this" reading the novel was when LWJ showed up and WWX was genuinely convinced that LWJ despised him and was going to kill him. Like. What? I totally get not realizing the depth or nature of his feelings! But no discernible emotional attachment on WWX's part? They're not even friends? This makes LWJ forcibly dragging WWX back to Cloud Recesses extremely sketchy. What am I even doing here?

And the thing is, I could see WWX's obliviousness being used effectively! LWJ is the one who invited him to Jinlintai for Jin Ling's ceremony, after all; from what I can tell, it's entirely reasonable for WWX in the novel to think LWJ lured him deliberately into the Qiongqi Pass ambush. WWX could've approached LWJ with a mixture of distrust and hostility on the grounds that LWJ tried to kill him in his past life (deceitfully via a gesture of friendship, no less!), and been utterly bewildered by LWJ's behavior towards him for that reason. His feelings for LWJ then change and grow because he's learning more about what the hell happened with the political plot.

Instead, we just get Wei Wuxian, The Jianghu's Most Tediously Oblivious Man, and his aloof love interest who exclusively shows affection while he is drunk or while WWX is incapacitated/unconscious/whatever and won't remember, and both of them replace Gay Chicken with communication.

I can see "WWX can read LWJ like a book" for the drama specifically. Wang Yibo does an excellent job of conveying interiority so something different is always going on underneath LWJ's stoic expressions. The "you must like Mianmian!" stuff in CQL always read to me as WWX teasing LWJ knowing full well there was no truth to it (though still not getting who LWJ did have a crush on). And since the two of them are good friends in that canon (with WWX's protestations that they are TOTALLY not friends, LWJ is so BORING!! coming off as tsundere behavior rather than his honest assessment of the situation), of course they'd understand each other!

BUT EVEN THEN. EVEN THEN! LXC can read him best. LXC can read him even when LWJ demonstrates his own tsundere behavior. LXC knows his didi better than anyone else and does everything he can for LWJ's happiness and safety, and in exchange he gets kicked to the curb at the lowest point in his life. Maybe the insistence that WWX is the only person who can understand him is so ppl don't have to think about that last part too much.

For the first time it occurs to me to wonder what NHS would have done if WWX had successfully done what he actually planned to do after waking up to discover he was alive again, which was essentially fuck off and not bother anybody. Like WWX getting involved with any of the investigation around NMJ’s death and JGY and all of it was contingent on the fact that he just fucking happened to end up on the same mountain as his nephew, his brother, and Lan Wangji within a few days of getting resurrected and then both falls face-first into Wen Ning and gets caught playing wangxian, confirming his identity to LWJ who is then responsible for him coming along for murder mystery road trip shenanigans. But like. While NHS may have engineered some small pieces of that (did he make sure Wen Ning could get out? nudge along the rumors about weird shit happening near the Mo Village to get cultivators out there?) I really don’t know what he would’ve done if WWX had managed to run away to a small village and like. Become a turnip farmer or something. If NHS could FIND him he could last resort turn up in person and tell WWX he knows it’s him, I suppose, but if he ran far enough under an assumed name that feels like a very big “if” to pin your multi-year assassination plot on

I conclude from this that NHS just knows WWX is such a strong magnet for Situations that NHS was 100% certain if WWX got brought back to life it would be impossible for him not to get involved in cultivator shenanigans. Sitting in his office with a calendar like “I give him three days at most before something absolutely bizarre happens to him”

Hmm. Really. Is that in the book. Is that what actually happens. What qualifies as 'intentionally causing pain' because... uh... Are you sure you aren't confusing him with... someone else...?

Sarcasm aside I am genuinely baffled how people come to the 'HERO OF THE COMMON PEOPLE' take. Yet another point where I have that 'am I reading a different book than everyone else?!' moments. Literally where does he do anything for any commoner (aside from occasionally helping them via night hunts, which is of course a good thing to do - but none of the major plot points involve devoting his life to helping commoners and a few minor ones involve inconveniencing them via stolen lotus pods and chickens, ruining the floor/ceiling of their business/livelihood with bath water, and making them uneasy with pet ghost girl harems).

As much as I love WWX, none of the people he does significant things to protect in the story are commoners. Not JC, not the Wens who are, well, Wens - they're all cultivators and some (like WQ) were very close to the top of the cultivation world as a favored protege of WRH before they were dragged down. Mianmian might be a 'servant's daughter' and lower status than most people there at the indoctrination camp, but that's in the context of being cultivators belonging to/associated with clans important enough for the Wens to demand they send disciples to their camp - an extremely privileged and narrow subset of the total population that is still substantially higher status than actual commoners.

That's not to say it's a bad story! And it's not to say they weren't worth protecting because they weren't commoners, or change the fact he did so at great personal sacrifice and with considerable panache! But 'hero of the common people' is just not what his story is about??

Anyway why can't people just enjoy a sexy necromantic torture-revenge to tragic downfall to accidental resurrection with pet donkey to fucking in the bushes character arc for what it is?

Unless I'm wildly misremembering something, I'm pretty sure JGY is the only major character who actually put any significant effort into doing anything actually substantial at any sort of personal cost/risk to help common people, or made it a substantial goal and produced results. (I guess if you count XXC and SL as major characters them too but I don't because I don't care about the Yi City arc much at all lol)

noticed this on a reread.... its interesting how the fandom tends to subconsciously restrict wwx's demonic cultivation in fanworks. the most common thing i see in fic is flute-exclusive corpse control with some sort of heavy price to pay, when canonically wwx has incredible variety with very little blowback after his resurrection. it's not that the flute control isn't canon but that it's not all he can do, even only in terms of making corpses fight (instead of techniques like the painted eyes summoning, etc etc).

i'm curious why that is! there's probably an element of simplicity to it, in that its easier to write something like that instead of coming up with unique cultivation techniques or something, and i won't lie and say the potential tension from lwj fighting wwx over the negative effects of demonic cultivation isn't very appealing. i wonder, though, if it's also a way to subconsciously fit him into a fandom stereotype (a problem that all fandoms eventually have) of a man who was so misunderstood that he never did anything wrong, and who needs to be protected in some capacity by his righteous (and more "manly"?) love interest. this is probably perpetuated by the untamed bc live action necessitates some sfx limits and they made some...... interesting plot changes, but even letting that alone, i just think there's so much potential in wwx's power set that doesn't often get used. i wanna see fic writers go wild and include some really fucking cool necromancy!!!

I admit I was sitting on this one for a while because I was trying very hard not to turn this into a Ryuki AU.

I failed.

So now it's Ryuki based with Toshiki Inoue brand identity shenanigans because I loved them in Agito, Faiz and Donbrothers :D

Ryuki is the Battle Royale one where the Riders are duking it out in order to have their wish granted. I'm going to combine this a bit with Fate/Zero where the end goal is an ultimate power, but this ultimate power is actually EVIL!

(It's the Yin Iron) (pretty sure it was also EVIL in Ryuki but I have not watched all of Ryuki)

LWJ was not supposed to be a Henshin Hero but while investigating a haunting one day because he does that, he spotted his brother and shenanigans ensued resulting in the LXC's transformation belt getting split in two and LWJ is a Hero now! ....but he and LXC are only at half the power they should be individually.

Which for ✨Reasons✨ is still pretty much on par with all of the other riders.

WWX is the favorite to win this Battle Royale. In his hero form, he is the villain to defeat and every time he and LWJ run into each other, it's a death match. In civilian form, he and LWJ actually get along great, neither one knowing the other's identity but both having strong ideals of justice. Their identities get revealed to each other about 2/3rds through and there is much angst.

(WWX also forms the classic 2 guys & a girl Rider trio with WN & WQ)

LWJ owns a motorbike and there will be romantic sunset motorbike rides. And friendship sunset motorbike rides. And angsty sunset motorbike rides.

(The bike's name is Bichen)

NHS is not a powerful hero like his brother was, but he has his guile and is determined to get the ultimate power so he could resurrect his brother. (Sorry Da-ge is dead in this verse. For ✨Reasons✨). He's friends with WWX in their civilian lives. Naturally they don't know each others identities, but he and LWJ do learn each other's identities pretty early on, and help each other out. NHS is very definitely not plotting something!

JGY is also a part of this. He and LXC know each other's identities so he figures out LWJ's identity pretty quickly. He decides not to let on that he knows, but much like LXC & LWJ he is more invested in using his powers for good than fighting other heroes. Honest!

This is as far as I got haha (JC is here somewhere too.... possibly also partaking in the identity hijinks with WWX & LWJ). Also Bonus because you mentioned this in our chat and I loved it:

WWX makes his debut in the story when JZX throws his sister's love letter off a bridge and he jumps down to get it while yelling at JZX. (LWJ witnesses this and thinks WWX is an idiot. But a respectable one!)

hmm would it be fun if the Yin Iron shards are what actually allow everyone to become Toku Heroes...
