Saw this going around Twitter, a list of "ring wing anime", which I thought was pretty interesting. I haven't seen all of them by any means, thoughts on a few:
Crest of the Stars: Been a long time but eh...its like okay sure it has the ~vibes of militarism and genetic engineering and noble duty and all that. But there is a lot of "war = right wing" energy sometimes that is totally unjustified (war is a universal tool of society unless you are explicitly pacifist, and while pacifists are left most left aren't pacifists), and Crest of the Stars is a good example of that, its just that its a space opera story, its not about validating this or that ideology. But it does have the vibes, i'll give it a C
Gunbuster: Okay, we all know why this is here. Slowly, in the background of the show, you pick up that they live in a timeline where Japan mastered new technology, gained economic supremacy, beat America's attempt to smack them down and annexed Hawaii, and became the first-amoung-equals of a united Earth alliance. It smacks of apologia for Japan's empire in WW2, a sense of revenge for past wrongs. And you have all this other stuff - like oh a bunch of it takes place in Okinawa because Anno was a huge fan of the 1971 film Battle of Okinawa due to its huge action setpieces, but that film also completely whitewashes the atrocities of the IJA. Its all true, like it reflect that cultural milieu.
But it doesn't do anything with any of that. Anno just likes Okinawa guys, he doesn't think Japan should have won in WW2 and rule China right now. And the thing you actually watch is a group of international space pilots serving in the equivalent of the UN Space Fleet experiencing the horrors of war fighting for peace (and also fanservice). Its a world where Japan's economic & technological innovation makes it a world leader via soft power, and international cooperation defends earth. This peak liberalism. C-
Patlabor: Yeah an odd one, like its simultaneously about the corruption of the powerful and all that, but also about the need for heavy policing and the "fragility" of society. This one is one where you can take from it what you want, but if you wanna be right wing yeah sure. B
Girls Und Panzer:
ಠ╭╮ಠ
F-
Niea_7: Wtf is this doing here? Like okay, its humor definitely spills into a bit of racial stereotyping and stuff. But this is an anime about refugees being discriminated against due to disabilities and caste and the humanity behind the outer differences. You cannot weasel your way around that. D-
Urusei Yatsura: By no means have I watched every episode or anything, but I feel like this is a bit of "well its just showing past society right? Therefore its right-wing". And like okay, that isn't entirely off-base, like it has stories about how men and women are Just Different and Being A Man and all that, so sure. But it was also mocking those social themes of the time just as much as it was reinforcing them. Like Mendou is not an aspirational character!
A bit like Patlabor, I guess I can see pulling what you want out of it. But its a bit harder here imo. B-
Space Battleship Yamato: Yeah I'll give you this one. Its just space opera in the end, but the way it sets up its symbols to redeem the legacy of the Japanese empire is far more explicit than say Gunbuster, no way around that. A-
Would be interested in other people's takes on anime I haven't seen or didn't mention!

One Piece Chapter 1024 - Initial Thoughts
Tumblr media
Happy Volume 100 Day! Indeed, Volume 100 officially comes out today, it's a shame we didn't get more of those We Are One segments (just like the Nissin noodle commercials) but it wrapped up nicely
There's also a chapter to deal with though so let's get to it
Spoilers for Chapter 1024, Support the Official Release too!
I forgot to mention the special Popularity Poll colour spreads last time but here's our middle one mainly involving the Straw Hats, Vivi, the remaining Supernovas, Bon, Merry, Woop Slap (seriously how?) and some villains (Crocodile, the rest of Moria and Enel). Sneaky bit of Sabo on the side too who'll be fully displayed in the next spread
Oh Usopp, your braggadocios scamp you. He's spreading Fear of God by claiming some recent KOs are due to his Conqueror's Haki
Also claiming to have defeated 2 of the Tobi Roppo...I mean he contributed at least, maybe word it like 'I fought two of the Tobi Roppo and I'm still standing'
Plus he's riding a very unimpressed Alligator SMILE atrocity XD
Horsealina chan (aka Speed) is back to protect sweet child Tama, as it turns out the KOs are from Big Mom's Conqueror's Haki who's fighting on this floor, which must mean that Law and Kid are taking it to her
Also it's still worth applauding that Nami, Usopp, Speed nor even Tama have succumbed to BM's Conqueror's Haki
Luffy's status is still unknown to the crew though, and Nami does seem a bit nervous about it when asking Franky
Franky's right though, no news is good news because if Luffy was defeated or dead he'd be paraded around by the Yonko
Franky is also making motions to move Nami and Usopp with him to the performance floor, so the crew's gonna be converging soon
Some Heart Pirate action too as they fend off any attempts at enemies intervening on Zoro and Sanji's fight with King and Queen, seems like Law they don't like to be told to do stuff by the Straw Hats either
Everyone's bouncing from the Third Floor too thanks to Maria's arson attempts
Out in a blaze of Yohoho is Brook carrying Robin, but no you're not cremated just yet, need to be ashes for that
Look at Robin so peaceful, as Brook guards over her and also is eager to know how things are going
He calls Jimbei who's on the Fourth Floor with Kid's remaining crew, didn't know Kid has a feral female crewmate
Trust Jimbei to be concerned about the big picture of Kaido, but he also mentions how people are fleeing the castle, is it because of the fight in the Performance Floor or because we've reached mainland?
Showing Kawamatsu defending the line does make me think the former
But back to Yamato vs Kaido now, looks like some parent/child attack tennis
Since we can't avoid it now I know the Vivre Card Databook is saying that Yamato is female but since Yamato is identifying as Oden and was still canonically called Kaido's son I'm gonna continue to use male pronouns for the time being. Don't read too into it okay or leap at me for using the wrong pronoun because it's a can of worms right now and I don't want to be part of it
I mean, come on Yamato it's not like you expected Kaido to take it easy on you when you're trying to stop one of his endgame plans
Flashback time! And that's where the Dragon statue used to be...
Kid Yamato is precious, and also has Conqueror's Haki
Kaido all about not winning any Father of the Year awards, he's been starving Yamato, says if he wants to be Oden then he'd be better off dead, then threw him in a cave for a month
Yamato isn't alone though, there are three master swordsmen samurai in the cave too
And now he entices them, with a serving of food for one and a load of swords to fight over it
And the twisted cherry on the bastard cake: 'But I thought you were Oden', was there ulterior motive though? Oden would be able to inspire the Samurai right? I guess not for his own gain though given how he's treating Yamato
The Samurai grab the swords, but they hand Yamato the food: Samurai don't get hungry...unless they're Kin'emon and Momo, like how Kunoichi don't get hungry unless it's Tama
Full on Tama vibes from Kid Yamato eating their first meal in ages, I see that Oda
Dang then one of the Samurai just cut the chains off of him
Since I was given away on spoilers (like seriously guys use the 'Keep Reading' thing, it's the best way to hide spoilery stuff for those who don't wanna be spoiled) this must be Ushimaru, and he does look like those old Zoro pictures
He also now has an eye injury, but he feels disgraced, probably because he was captured rather than killed
Look at this little baby who is probably 5 foot tall hiding behind Oden's journal and doesn't know how to read yet
Looks like Yamato had 3 Dads, all of them Samurai, who taught him to read Oden's journal so he could fanboy more
10 Days pass and Yamato is weakening, seems like the Samurai feel that Yamato will need to be in the fight
Ushimaru though with the Shimotsuki crest on his back has had enough of prison, the Samurai are busting out and in turn giving Yamato freedom from the cave too
Amanowato, I feel like that's important, but the only thing I can find is a special dance (Amanowato Mai) that's performed on the day of the Annual Festival - October 15th...which is a Friday so maybe...
Back to the present and Yamato asks the tough questions, what right does Kaido have to steal freedom?
But Kaido makes a usual cruel response, there are no easy answers
And then we conclude with a clash of Thunder Bagua
Whooof, lot in that chapter huh?
We've got collective chaos with the Straw Hats as they do as expected begin to converge towards the performance floor, perhaps for the final hold off before Luffy and Momo arrive.
Oda though must've known that we were hoping for a Zoro flashback, because he then gave Yamato one instead XD It was cool to see some supportive people in Yamato's past, but while Yamato4Nakama fans will point that he now has a link to Zoro via Ushimaru we also have to note that Yamato's backstory may not have enough tragedy to be a Straw Hat (I'm joking in this btw, Carrot doesn't either unless the Dukes die but Zoro and Usopp's backstories aren't so tragic either)
Yamato giving me Tama vibes when a child is interesting, I do wonder why we have gone that route other than adorableness, but you can see where his strong admiration for Samurai lies too. Wonder how he got Oden's journal so young though
But yeah, no break which is good, I have a feeling though we'll get one next chapter after the colour spread is finished, 1025 could be setting something up big so Oda can pass out for a few days till giving us fire once again

Digimon Adventure: 2020 – Episode 1: Tokyo: Digital Crisis! (Review)
Thoughts on the first episode of the Digimon Adventure reboot series.
Disclaimer: I just want to make it clear that I’m watching and reviewing Digimon Adventure: 2020 in the context of it being a children’s anime -- because that’s what it is. By design, it’s obviously going to be “dumb” to the mind of the average adult. But that’s OK, because it’s for kids. And for a first episode aimed at children? It was pretty good.
The opening credits were 99% Taichi and I don’t like it if it’s permanently going to be this way. But I’m hoping that it will change to perhaps be character-centric to the person being “highlighted” in a particular episode, going through all eight kids, until there’s a permanent one where all eight are equally in it. I also hope the same for the ending credits.
I noticed that Angemon and Angewomon were missing from the opening credits, whereas the other digimon evolutions are shown. So I assume they’re following in OG Adventure’s footsteps and doing the whole “special angel” evolution reveal? I’m OK with that. It seems really interesting how they’re setting up Takeru and Hikari to be included this time (as they were both missing in the ending credits with the other five standing opposite Yamato . . .).
Both the opening and ending songs are fine, but I prefer the original songs, especially Butter-Fly. You are missed, Kouji Wada. <3
The art and animation of this series is really good. Toei Animation are really putting money into this series. I’m impressed.
I have mixed feelings about how they chose to introduce the characters. On the one hand, I think utilising just two characters is great to really highlight them to the audience and not overwhelm them with too much information. But on the other hand . . . I think introducing all eight characters in the first episode would make it appeal to more kids, because they can easily identify with one kid and keep watching the series. But a kid might watch this first episode, not like Taichi or Koushirou, and just switch off from the series completely. But I think what they went for is probably best for how they plan to introduce the characters (particularly regarding what they have in store for Yamato being a lone wolf who joins them later).
Taichi was a bit too generic to me. But, it’s only the first episode, so this isn’t a real criticism -- I’m sure he’ll be fleshed out as the series progresses. He also seems more responsible than OG Taichi. And while I do like his new voice, I think Toshiko Fujita was a lot better; she managed to convey more personality in her voice.
Koushirou was actually quite “cute”. But I’m not sure I totally like that he’s being portrayed as shy . . . he never seemed shy to me in the original series, but just a kid who was super absorbed in his own tech world. But his shyness did make him more endearing? I’m just not used to it so I find it a bit unsettling. But it does “humanise” him more and thus makes him more relatable, rather than just a distant tech nerd, so I guess it’s a positive? I also really like his voice.
I am liking the Taichi/Koushirou friendship a lot. You can tell Koushirou is going to completely idolise Taichi for making him feel included and “useful”. And let’s be real: Koushirou has always been the most underrated character when it comes to popularity, relative to actual impact on the plot, because he’s actually the one who solves almost everything and he doesn’t get nearly as much credit for it as he deserves in the fandom. It’s nice that they’ve spotlighted him with Taichi in this episode.
So apparently Mimi’s family owns a conglomerate because they made both Koushirou’s tablet computer and Takeru’s hat? I always thought the weird “TK” scrawled on his hat was for his name (TaKeru or T.K.), but apparently it’s for TachiKawa! Wow, Mimi is insanely rich this time around (moreso than the first). Princess indeed!
Takeru’s design is so freaking adorable. I still think his clothes are a bit off, but his face is so adorable! And I didn’t really think that of OG Takeru. I mean . . . I guess he was kind of adorable, but not overwhelmingly so like this one! He hasn’t said one line but, OMG, the cuteness. *SQUISH*
Did anyone notice that in Takeru’s room, there is a poster of an ASTRONAUT? OMG I loved that! What a nice throwback to Yamato’s future career in OG Adventure (and thus to the 02 epilogue!). I can imagine reboot Yamato idolising astronauts and influencing Takeru into liking them, too. Awesome Easter egg there!
So the Crests are showing up right from the start. No rehash of finding the Tags and Crests, then! (Or will they find the physical forms later?) I really like how different from OG Adventure it already is, while keeping touches of the old as well. Toei have done a good job with mixing the old and new so far. Keep it up!
I thought Taichi’s meeting with Agumon was super cute and quite “realistic” with Taichi reaching his hand out to “pet” Agumon! Though Taichi is obviously more courageous than the average person, because uh, I would be afraid that dino would bite my hand off, lol.
I thought Agumon’s evolution “sequence” to Greymon was really cool, but at the same time, I did miss an actual evolution sequence like the OG one. It’s probably just nostalgia making me feel that way. I can accept this new version though! It feels very “updated”.
It was very fast-paced compared to OG Adventure. I’m not sure I entirely like that Agumon evolved so easily and so quickly to Greymon in the very first episode, but it also didn’t seem to hinder the episode. But where do they go from here? What do they have planned to pad out this series if things happen so quickly? I’m intrigued to find out!
Oh, remember how I said less than 24 hours ago that I might not even like reboot Yamato? Yeah, well . . . throw that idea out the window, because the dude had two seconds at the end of this episode and HE ALREADY WON ME OVER lmao. He had NO LINES and was still the highlight of the episode for me. My attachment to him is insane. (Of course, I’m hoping he doesn’t turn out to be a super douche, lol.) I like that he was “chosen” before Taichi and was in the Network before him. What have you been up to in there, Yamato?
While I LOVED the ending credits, as I said before, I hope it changes to be central for each specific character (going through all eight kids), before there is a permanent main ending that includes all the characters equally. I really don’t like how Toei Animation seems to forget that there are EIGHT CHARACTERS and not just two. Come on, Toei, do the right thing!
But . . . let’s talk about the ending credits. IT WAS AMAZING. It characterised Yamato so much without him saying a word. I love that he’s still a lone wolf, that music is still a big part of his life (a bass at 11!), and that his love for Takeru is still so genuine. There was also a pivotal scene where it shows Jou, Mimi, Taichi, Sora and Koushirou standing together, and Taichi smiles at Yamato, who hesitantly steps forward to join them. I loved that! It made me think about the discarded plot where “Yamato might’ve separated from the group entirely” -- it seems like this is a reverse version and I can’t wait to see it play out. The scene that inspired that discarded plot idea was when Yamato decides to fight Taichi, and Sora yells at him to stop -- and I just loved her reactions to him throughout that arc. Especially because, if Taichi had turned on the group, I think Sora’s first instinct would be to conk him over the head -- but she gives Yamato a massive pass and then supports him to separate from the group to find himself. My Sorato thoughts are already swirling about how Sora will react to Yamato in this reboot! Will she hate him at first? Will she ask him to join? Oh my, they haven’t even interacted in this reboot and I’m already shipping them, lmao. I hope Sorato still have a connection in this reboot!
Overall, I liked it for a children’s anime. And I never would have watched it if it wasn’t a reboot with the original Adventure cast, as I have only seen a few episodes of Tamers, Frontier and Savers . . . and a few seconds where Yamato shows up in Xros Wars, lol. I’m not interested in Digimon, I’m interested in the Adventure cast. So I’m really glad this reboot exists! I’ll happily watch all episodes of this series because it’s more of my kids goddamnit. XD
Oh, and I just want to apologise that even though the episode was focussed on Taichi and Koushirou, I used screenshots of Yamato and Sora for the episode post . . . I’m sorry, I’m a Sorato blog! XD;
I think I will do a weekly Digimon Adventure: 2020 “review”, because the episodes are only 20-ish minutes long and it’s easy enough to consume and write about. And even if I might not have a lot to say about a particular episode, I can still spam Sorato screenshots, lol. :P
I can’t wait for the next episode! Because: YAMATO. <3

Episode 22 - The Saddest Episode of Adventure? (Not Clickbait)
Oh boy is there so much to unpack in episode 22. This episode is a lot. If you’d like to witness someone scream about just how much of a lot episode 22 is, then welcome. I have some screaming to do.
(this is literally just a recap of the entire episode and I’m pretty terrible at analysis so this probably makes no sense but hey, I have spirit)
I don’t even know where to start there’s just so much going on here. Okay, from the beginning. Taichi gets back to the digital world and finds Tokomon passed out from hunger with Takeru’s discarded digivice and crest. Obviously some shit went down, and Tokomon is nice enough to explain.
Tumblr media
Through this, we find out that Taichi and Agumon have been missing for at least a month and a half, which is where Tokomon’s flash back explanation starts, and that the kids stayed in the desert looking for Taichi for this month and a half. We see the group arguing over what they should do next. Sora wants to keep looking, Yamato thinks it’s hopeless, Koushiro wants to find Gennai, Mimi wants to go home, and Joe doesn’t actually say what he wants. (In the next episode it’s revealed he went to look for food before being led astray by PicoDevimon, but in the context of this episode he just kind of goes). But anyway, important thing to point out here is:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the saddest images I’ve ever seen in my life. Takeru is sitting off by himself, which may make sense while they’re having big kid talk and he stays warm next to the fire, but he also sleeps by himself while the rest of them are all huddled together. Also to note is that Takeru and Yamato are on the complete opposite ends. Here we can see how disconnected Takeru is from the rest of the kids, including his brother. This’ll be important later, but let’s put a pin in it for now.
Here is where the group falls apart, with Sora heading off on her own first. She lets Tokomon know that her and Piyomon are off to look for Taichi, to try to keep Takeru from crying if she doesn’t tell him.
Tumblr media
(A month and a half in this desert, by the way). Koushiro heads off first, followed by Joe, and finally Mimi, leaving the brothers and their Digimon as the only ones left together. Once it’s just them, they finally leave the desert. We also learn that during this time they haven’t encountered any new enemies. Takeru wants to go back into the desert and look for Taichi.
Tumblr media
But as we already know, Yamato has given up. You can’t blame him either, how long are they expected to just wait in a desert? Of course, Takeru cries, and Yamato instantly apologizes, and says that Taichi and Agumon are probably doing fine somewhere.
Tumblr media
I’m telling you, this is some heavy shit. Yamato agrees, and says they’ll see them again someday. If he really means that, or is just saying that to keep Takeru happy is another matter, and probably something Yamato is conflicted on himself. Regardless, they continue on, and come across an amusement park. Yamato thinks to himself that it looks safe, and they explore the deserted park. And here is where things take a turn.
Tumblr media
We see Takeru holding back tears before saying that he’ll be okay, and will wait.
Tumblr media
He asks Yamato to come back quickly, as Yamato has decided to go check things out in the infamous swan boat, planning to only be gone for two to three hours. Now, it’s easy to judge Yamato a bit for leaving Takeru alone in the first place, he could have taken Takeru with him, but Yamato needing some time alone to think things over without upsetting Takeru would make sense. I wouldn’t  judge him for that, can relate, but it’s unfortunate how it ultimately turns out. In any case, Takeru insists that Yamato come back quickly, and waves him off with a smile. Once Yamato is out of sight though . . .
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And my heart breaks again. This boy is too good at hiding his feelings when it’s something that deeply hurts him. But that’s a long rant for another day. For now, unfortunately, Yamato does not end up coming back. Takeru waits until nightfall, and refuses to eat, before eventually falling asleep on a bench next to the wharf Yamato set off from.
Tumblr media
Please my heart can only shatter so many times. Takeru continues to wait on the wharf, wondering why his brother won’t come back. He said he was just going to take a look around. He said he’d be back soon!
Tumblr media
Takeru reaches his limit and breaks down. But unfortunately, it’s not over yet. A certain bat shaped Digimon decides that this small sweet boy isn’t broken enough yet. He approaches them, pretends to have good intentions, thanks them for being involved in defeating Etemon, and offers to go look for Yamato. No good intentions can be found in PicoDevimon, and he comes back to spout some dirty dirty lies.
“Yamato said that he doesn’t want to see your face anymore. He said that he really, really, really hates you. He doesn’t want to be your brother anymore.”
Tumblr media
“Oh, Yamato also said this. He really hates you for being a crybaby.”
This is too much for Takeru, and he runs off in tears.
Tumblr media
Tokomon of course tries to tell Takeru that Yamato would never say anything like that. But Takeru is in no state to listen right now.
Tumblr media
I’m not even halfway through the episode oh god. Tokomon runs off to confront PicoDevimon about being a lying little bitch, but he of course denies it, since Tokomon has no proof. Tokomon is pissed, and hits PicoDevimon with his baby bubbles. Unfortunately, Takeru chooses this moment to arrive on the scene, and he’s an anti-fight boy.
Tumblr media
PicoDevimon sees his chance to cause a rift between the two, and says not to blame Tokomon, he was jealous that him and Takeru had been getting along. Tokomon scoffs at this, causing Takeru to get mad at Tokomon’s attitude, and tells him to apologize to PicoDevimon. Tokomon refuses, they argue, and Tokomon claims that he’ll leave if Takeru keeps trying to force him to apologize. So, Takeru tells him to go ahead and leave.
Tumblr media
Tokomon gives Takeru the chance to change his mind, but Takeru is hurt, extremely hurt, and is taking it out on Tokomon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this is where the flashback ends, and we’re back to Taichi. Taichi is worried about Yamato, he knows that Yamato would never willingly abandon his little brother, but finding Takeru comes first. Meanwhile, Takeru is spending a very depressing time in the amusement park with PicoDevimon. PicoDevimon is trying to get Takeru to forget about Tokomon using the rides, but it’s not working out for him.
Tumblr media
Yeah, Takeru’s not in the mood for fun. PicoDevimon asks if Takeru is worried about Tokomon. At first, Takeru says who cares, but follows it up with wondering if Tokomon is okay by himself . . . . but he really doesn’t care about him at all. PicoDevimon sees through the tsundere act, knows he needs a new plan, and heads off to regroup, leaving Takeru alone.
Tumblr media
He deals with this by sleeping (relatable), and this is where Taichi finds him. The first thing Takeru says to Taichi is “Taichi! You’re alive!” and it’s just really heartbreaking that these kids had to seriously consider the fact that Taichi could be dead. They don’t dwell on it much in the show, but it’s pretty dang dark.
Tumblr media
A rare non-Yamato related hug from Takeru. Taichi apologizes for making Takeru worried. Takeru notices that Tokomon is back, and ruins the happy mood by asking Tokomon if he realizes he was wrong now. Tokomon angrily replies that he did nothing wrong, which is true. And the arguing starts again.
Tumblr media
They really are kids. Imagine Angemon having this argument. This time, Taichi is here to break it up and tells them this isn’t the time to fight since they should go look for Yamato and other others. But Takeru doesn’t want to. Everyone left him. First Sora.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Can you here those screams in the distance? That’s me. Takeru has taken PicoDevimon’s words about how Yamato, and has applied them to everyone else too. Why?
Tumblr media
Because he had already had those types of thoughts himself. PicoDevimon was voicing his worst suspicions. Whether they did it intentionally or not, we can clearly see that there was some excluding of Takeru going on. We don’t get to see what happens during this month and a half, so unfortunately the why is unknown. Maybe because their conversations are more serious in general and they don’t want to deal with Takeru crying. If he was crying often, maybe some resentment/annoyance was growing. Or maybe Takeru himself was distancing himself. However it happened, negative feelings were brewing, and being a kid sensitive to separation, everyone leaving would enhance those negative thoughts. PicoDevimon’s lie has grown from Yamato hates me, to everyone hates me. And that makes my heart hurt.
Taichi tries to counter this by saying that there was no way Yamato could ever hate him (which is true, but mention the others too Taichi!). And here’s where Takeru says something veeery interesting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(episode 3, directed at Taichi)
It’s like they say, kids are more perceptive that they’re given credit for. Takeru isn’t exactly wrong about this, but he goes a bit overboard, and connects it with Yamato being against searching for Taichi when Takeru wanted to, and then adds an extra reason for why Yamato hates him.
Tumblr media
Taichi is not equipped to deal with this. Takeru’s thoughts are really spiraling at this point, all centered around how everyone hates him and why. Let’s not consider him potentially thinking that his dad and brother left because they hate him. It’s a good thing Yamato isn’t here to see this, because Takeru claims he wants to be Taichi’s little brother instead.
Tumblr media
That’s an understatement, Taichi. Taichi is currently the only person Takeru has who he doesn’t think hates him, so of course he’s going to latch onto him. Taichi is essentially the fun friend and Yamato is the strict brother. It doesn’t help that since the brothers don’t get to spend a lot of time together, there’s some awkwardness in their relationship, mostly from Yamato. There’s some awkwardness from Yamato just in general. He completely adores Takeru, but isn’t always great at showing that in ways Takeru can understand.
Tumblr media
We don’t get to see the in-between of this conversation, but Taichi is able to calm Takeru down and coax him into agreeing to at least hearing what Yamato has to say in person. Things are going well, but of course liar mc-lying bat shows back up with a bunch of memory erasing mushrooms. Like he hasn’t caused enough damage. PicoDevimon tries to start an argument with Tokomon, but Agumon interrupts to ask about Yamato. PicoDevimon doubles down on his claims, because he sucks, and Taichi asks to be taken to where Yamato is.
PicoDevimon agrees, but offers them some of his sketchy mushrooms to eat before they head off. He’s just the worst. Everyone is hungry, apparently hungry enough for some sketch mushrooms, but Agumon needs a convenient bathroom break where a mysterious voice that sounds a lot like Sora warns him that the mushrooms erase memories. So convenient!
Tumblr media
Thank god Takeru tried to eat the mushroom whole without biting into it. Phew. When Agumon reveals with the mushrooms do, Takeru finally gets suspicious. (Why no one is suspicious about PicoDevimon from his name alone I’ll never know. Shouldn’t the whole Devimon part set off some alarm bells?)
Tumblr media
Panicked and with his cover blown, PicoDevimon admits to everything being a lie.
Tumblr media
It sure is buddy. Takeru apologizes to Tokomon right away for treating him so horribly, but of course Tokomon tells him not to worry about it and isn’t angry at all. It’s like Takeru said in episode 12, fighting between friends is okay, because you’ll make up soon. But fighting between adults . . .
With the partners friends again, Taichi gives Takeru his digivice and crest back. Thanks to the reveal with PicoDevimon was lying, Takeru has restored some hope that maybe everyone doesn’t hate him after all.
Tumblr media
This is enough for the Crest of Hope to regain its light (what a tease considering it won’t be properly activated for 30 more episodes). And here we see a first for Takeru. He actually wants to fight.
Tumblr media
This is the same boy who initially wanted to try to talk it out with Devimon first, so this is a big shift for him. PicoDevimon 100% deserves it, but it’s sad to see how he’s losing his innocence. But it means the return of Patamon! Hurray! Making his battle debut, since this marks the first time Patamon is in a proper battle on his own (the Elecmon battle was half a fight that turned into tug of war).
Tumblr media
. . . it could be better. Patamon really gets slammed all over the place. It’s surprisingly violent. But with Takeru cheering him on, Patamon is able to ultimately win (unfortunately PicoDevimon doesn’t die, we’re stuck with this asshole for awhile).
Takeru once again apologizes for what’s happened, but Patamon is a pure precious bean so everything’s okay.
Tumblr media
Takeru also says he needs to apologize to Yamato later too, though if Yamato knew the full details of what happened here he’d freak as much as I have. The episode ends with Taichi explaining that the distortions in the Digital World are affecting the real world, and that they’ll need everyone’s strengths to fix it before they can go home.
Tumblr media
And with that weight on Takeru’s shoulders, the episode finally ends.
Phew, that’s a rough one. There are so many insights into Takeru’s character here, but I don’t want to get too much into all that until the rewatch is finished and I can look at the whole package.
Does anyone else internally scream when they think about this episode? Or am I just losing my mind? Let me know.

Prompt List Challenge
Did I awake from the dead to try and finish all the prompt challenges I’ve been ignoring in my inbox during my extreme writer’s block? Why yes, yes I did.
#8: “There’s only one bed.”
Type: One-shot
Characters: Ishida Yamato, Yagami Hikari
Rating: K
Word Count: ~1,000
Imagine this is somewhere in the the Tri universe during Saikai.
His mind was utter chaos. Every time he grasped at a coherent thought, it sifted away like sand between his fingertips, lost to a sea of emotions. With his frustration threatening to reach new levels, he ignored the war raging inside of him and rang the doorbell. It was now or never.
“Yamato?”
The melodic voice jarred him.
“Hikari?”
The ever-so-slight tilt of her head reminded him he shouldn’t have been so surprised.
“Sorry, I just…” he trailed.
“You were looking for my brother.”
Had Yamato been less preoccupied, he might’ve raised an eyebrow that her words were more of a statement than a question.
“Yeah.”
Hikari stepped out of the way and motioned for Yamato to come inside. He respectfully stepped out of his shoes and followed her past the entryway, glancing around the apartment for telltale bushy hair. Once he was assured that Taichi was nowhere in plain sight, Yamato edged towards one of the bedroom doors before turning back to Hikari.
“I’m guessing he’s in your guys’ room?”
He didn’t wait for a response before pounding on the door in front of him.
“I’m coming in, so make yourself appropri–“
Startled silent, Yamato did a double-take once inside the room. While taking in his new surroundings, he felt Hikari’s lithe body slink past him.
“There’s only one bed,” he commented once she was inside and facing him.
Yamato watched as Hikari sat on the aforementioned bed, patting the seat of a desk chair next to her.
“It’s been a while since you’ve been here, huh? Although technically I think a bunk bed would still count as one bed,” she added with an almost imperceptible giggle.
Flushed, Yamato accepted her offer and sat down next to her.
“I guess at some point siblings should have their own rooms. When did this happen?”
“A little earlier this year, actually, so you haven’t missed much. I’m still not really used it.”
She waved around at her belongings which were all suspiciously sequestered into one corner of the room. Yamato’s eyes settled back onto Hikari and noted a wan smile that set off alarm bells in his head.
“Is Taichi even here?”
She shifted so that she was sitting up a little straighter.
“His indecision isn’t because he doubts our abilities, you know that, right?”
The whirlwind inside of him ended its brief respite and began roaring again.
“It doesn’t matter what his gripe is, we don’t have the luxury of time to wait around. He needs to get it through his thick skull that we’re the only ones that can do anything and we need to do it now!”
Yamato didn’t mean to raise his voice at her, but Hikari took it in stride. If he wasn’t already aware of her particular skill of staying composed when most would crumble, he would have been impressed at the easy tone she continued with.
“The likelihood of having people’s blood on our hands heavily weighs on Taichi.”
“If we don’t do anything, multiple lives will be at stake, Hikari. You must see that!” Yamato snarled, shooting up in defiance. He didn’t understand why this fact was so hard to impress on apparently both Yagami siblings.
“You misunderstand,” she replied, shaking her head slowly. “Before, we weren’t in the human world and we were just oblivious, ignorant children; there is a difference between blindly doing what’s right and finally realizing that you will have a direct hand in destruction. This is the first time Taichi has needed to thoughtfully weigh the consequences of sacrificing people for the greater good.”
Yamato recoiled slightly and found his seat again.
“Sacrifice seems like a harsh word,” he trailed with only a hint of spite.
“But perhaps an accurate one, nonetheless.”
His mental storm dwindled down to a slow churn.
Yamato’s mindset hadn’t changed, but it suddenly became a lot harder to verbally convey why they still needed to take action as quickly as possible. It wasn’t that he wanted people to be caught in the crossfire, but their inaction could have just as direct of an impact on the world. The more they waited around, the more dire the consequences could become.
“I’m not taking a position here,” she interjected through his thoughts. “Please don’t think that I’m trying to say that either of you are right or wrong. I just want help you to better understand where he’s coming from. He’s as stubborn as a mule, but it might soften him up a little to feel like you’re hearing his concerns. We’re all allowed our moments of weakness and deserve the support of our friends.”
She stared at him pointedly, and Yamato couldn’t help but wonder if that was a subtle jab at his crest. He dropped his head, not quite knowing how to respond.
“Yamato.”
She placed a delicate hand over the fist he was making in his lap and he prickled at her warmth. Choosing to ignore the involuntary response, he looked up and egged her on with pleading eyes.
“You’re the only one that can reach him, I know you’ll do your best. I have faith in you.”
Her hand lingered on his for only a second more before she stood up and made her way to the bedroom door.
“He’s over at the park if you still want to catch him,” she disclosed to him. The air of finality in her voice told him it was time to take his leave.
“That’s a good idea, thank you.”
As they made their way to the front door, Yamato spun around catching Hikari off guard.
“Taichi’s lucky to have you as a sister.”
Rose patches dusted her cheeks and Yamato gave her a genuine smile.
“It’s a wonder you guys are related,” he added cheekily before ducking down to retrieve his shoes.
She chuckled and waited for him to cross the doorway threshold before bidding him goodbye.
“Good luck, Yamato. Tell Taichi I said hello.”
Yamato offered a small wave before taking his leave.
“I’ll do my best.”

Confession: Part 2
See here for part 1
---
Yamato’s body reacted before his mind had fully processed the words, his hand jolting back from Taichi’s in surprise.
He regretted the action immediately. It felt like it would be too weird to put his hand back, though.
He shifted in his seat, trying to think.
“Are you sure?”
Taichi’s face was usually so expressive, but he couldn’t read it now. All he knew was that his friend was barely breathing, and every word out of his mouth was making it worse.
“I mean, you said you were figuring things out, so…have you finished? Or are you still, uh. Is it possible that you’re just confused?”
“Yeah, I’m sure,” Taichi said like he was trying to enunciate each word very clearly.
“Alright. Okay.” He leaned back in his seat, crossing his arms. “Does anyone else know?”
“You’re the first I’ve told.”
“Not even Hikari?”
Taichi’s mouth twisted. “She wouldn’t want to hear from me right now.”
The sad thing was that was probably true. Hikari was still Hikari, so it was not as though she was acting petulant or hostile. There was just an absence of something that had been there, invisible and warm in the air between her and her brother.
Yamato was so used to the way the two of them were around each other that he hadn’t noticed it until it was gone. They had always been so tuned into each other. They always seemed to be aware of what the other was doing when they were in the same physical space, like they kept an ear out for a note no one else could hear. It wasn’t like they orbited around each other, but there was a harmony to the way they moved.
There was something discordant about them, now. It was probably hardly noticeable to most people, but to the original Chosen Children, it was painfully obvious. And Hikari wouldn’t allow anyone to address it. For as different as their personalities were, sometimes it was so obvious that she and Taichi were related.
Yamato could not believe that a closeness like theirs could be gone for good. They cared too much for each other, and there was an injustice to Hikari’s anger that he believed she was too good to let fester forever.
Would she turn away from her brother when he needed her? It pained Yamato that he couldn’t say ‘no’ for certain.
Taichi had spent the last few weeks not meeting Yamato’s eyes, and now he wouldn’t stop.
“There’s an underclassman,” Taichi said, like he was answering a question Yamato hadn’t asked. “Some of his classmates found gay porn on his phone. They’ve been hassling him and spreading rumors.”
Yamato had a sinking feeling he knew where this was going.
“So you want to, what? Come out and take some of the heat off him?”
“Not exactly. Or that’s not the only reason.” His leader bit his lip. “I’ve spoken up before- told people to knock it off. But it doesn’t feel like enough. The stuff they’re saying about this guy- it’s not true. They definitely would know that stuff wasn’t true about me, so if they knew that I was gay, too, then maybe it would change the assumptions they’re making about him.”
“Or maybe they’d just harass you, too,” Yamato hissed.
“They could try.” Taichi’s jaw set.
“Are you really thinking this through? This is the kind of thing that could ruin your life if it gets out. It could make it hard for you to get jobs, get accepted into schools, even get housing. It could follow you for the rest of your life.”
Yamato slapped a hand on the table. “Do you even know what it’s like to be an outcast? As long as I’ve known you, you’ve been popular. You’re a star athlete and you’ve got a way with people. You draw in friends like moths to a flame. I’ve always,” he swallowed. “Kind of envied that about you. Sometimes I’ve thought that you should be the one with the Crest of Friendship.”
Taichi said nothing, lips parting with surprise.
“The point is that if this gets out, that could all change. It won’t matter what kind of person you are, all anyone will see is a preconception. Something to look down on. Maybe even to fear. You don’t fit the stereotype, Taichi, but people could still imagine that you do.”
This was all going wrong. Yamato hadn’t meant to say any of this, didn’t even know where it was coming from, but it was true, wasn’t it? He had to make Taichi understand that this- this whim he was having, this stupidly brave desire to protect someone else based on a confused feeling that might not even be more than a phase, this could seriously harm him. Taichi was supposed to be more mature than this, now.
It just figured that Taichi would hesitate when he should have charged forward during their battles and then rediscover his reckless attitude the minute that behavior was no longer useful. Damn him.
The worst part was that Yamato knew he was saying exactly the wrong things to get him to stop. A familiar light was growing in Taichi’s eyes that thrilled Yamato even as it frustrated him. He’d missed it so much; thought for a time that it might be gone for good.
Taichi, who had seemed almost like a stranger at times over the last few months, looked more and more like himself with every passing second. The quiet, nervous person from earlier who could barely confess what he felt was gone. Taichi sat up straight in his seat, head raised and shoulders back.
“I can’t go through life hiding,” he said. “That’s not who I am. You think I’ve never felt alone or hated? I’ve never faced others’ fear? You should know better than that!” It was almost a shout.
Yamato thought of everything they’d been through together, in both worlds, and couldn’t deny the rebuke.
Taichi continued, eyes burning. “I can handle opposition and hardship, okay? But I can’t survive losing myself. If I sit silently by, if I just deny an entire side of myself, my life, that is what will happen. I know it, I’ve known it for a while, but I’ve been too afraid to do anything about it. I’m done with that.”
Both of them were breathing hard, like they’d been trading physical blows.
“I need to know, Yamato. Can I count on you? Are you on my side?”
“I think this is one of the stupidest ideas you’ve ever had,” Yamato snarled. “And that’s saying something. Of course I’m on your side, you fucking idiot. Like I’d leave you over something like this.”
The grin that lit Taichi’s face shone like the sun and Yamato felt like he hadn’t seen it in a thousand years. His chest ached as he grinned back.
“Then I guess I know what I need to do.”
“What?” Yamato asked, alarmed.
“I’ll tell my family. Tonight.”
“That soon?”
“Better to get it over with, right? I’ve waited long enough.”
Everything was happening so quickly. Yamato rested his elbows on the table and pressed his hands together in front of his mouth, thinking.
“Tell them at dinner. I have band practice after that. I can stop at your place on the way. If it goes badly, come with me to my practice and take your books. Say that you’re going to do homework with me. If all goes well, then just tell me that you don’t need help with your homework after all.”
“You never let any of us go to your practices. You even make Takeru sit outside, sometimes. ‘Too distracting to the creative process,’ wasn’t it?”
Yamato glared over his fingers. “If you think I’m going to leave you alone tonight if your family reacts badly, you can go to hell. Even if everything goes well, if you want some company, then you come with me. No bullshit trying to shoulder things alone. Promise me.”
“Alright. I promise,” Taichi said softly.
“I’m trusting you on this,” Yamato warned.
“I know. No bullshit.”
They exchanged a look; Taichi’s warm, Yamato’s faintly embarrassed.
“That’s settled, then.” Yamato cleared his throat. “I need to get going. Some of us actually have to cook for ourselves, you know.” He paused. “Unless you want me to be there with you when you tell them?”
Taichi thought about it, but shook his head. “Thanks, but it’d be better with just the family, I think.”
“What do you think Hikari will do?”
His friend’s brows drew together painfully. “I wish I knew.”
They were silent. Then Taichi stood up and fumbled in his pocket for his wallet.
“I can get it,” Yamato protested.
“No way. It’s the least I can do. Thanks for, well. For listening.” Taichi rubbed his nose. “I really appreciate your support, you know?”
“Yeah, well. It’s not like there’s any stopping you when you get like this,” Yamato said gruffly.
Taichi flashed a small smile and Yamato felt like he should have to blink spots out of his vision. Had it really been so long since he’d seen Taichi smile genuinely that he’d forgotten how intense it could be? It was like he’d built up a callous, like the ones on his fingers from playing guitar, and it had faded from lack of practice. With just a couple plucks of his heartstrings, he was left sore and stinging.
“Wish me luck.”
“Good luck.”
As Taichi dashed away from the shop door through the rain, hair soaked through and starting to droop down more like a normal person’s within moments, Yamato thought of a prayer his grandmother had taught him.
He murmured, “May those frightened cease to be afraid, and may those bound be free. May the powerless find power, and may people think of one another. May those who find themselves in trackless, fearful wilderness–the children, the aged, the unprotected–be guarded by beneficent celestials, and may they swiftly attain enlightenment.”
He smiled to himself. He was not really a spiritual person, but that prayer had always stuck in his mind. The “trackless, fearful wilderness” made him think of the Digital World, and the “beneficent celestials” reminded him of their partner digimon.
Now, he could only hope that whatever beneficent divine presence there might exist in this world would breathe protection over his best friend. He couldn’t think of anyone more deserving.

It kinda makes me sad how I said I’d write an indepht thing about how I feel about Appmon after rewatching it but like... I can’t find the words to express how I feel about it... Partly because some of my feelings of it are so conflicting...
One of the biggest issues I had with it was it’s lack of story arcs. And the thing is... I don’t think it’s fair or nice to compare Appmon to Adventure and use Adventure as some kind of “standard” other seasons need to live up to. But to complain about Appmon’s story arcs I need to compare it to Adventure because it makes it a million times easier to explain the issue I have
Appmon’s story arcs were kind of... Well, to start off there’s only two major story arcs in Appmon; the 7-Code Appmon Arc (aka first 20+ episodes until we meet Dantemon), and the Hajime & Bootmon Arc (the entire rest of the show). And the thing is that these arcs were... kind of badly defined.
Like through out the whole series we do always know that the ultimate goal of the series is to stop Leviathan, Appmon did a good job at defining that right from the begining (which is more than what I can say for Adventure). But how the story progresses, how each event and scene connects and leads to the next, and how the Chosen will achieve their ultimate goal... Like through out Appmon I always felt like those things just... kind of weren’t there.
Especially during (the begining of) the Hajime & Bootmon arc it just felt really unclear how the search for Hajime was going to help stop Leviathan. And while Bootmon gets mentioned fairly early on, he kinda gets forgotten because the focus of the story shifts to introducing Yuujin and Offmon, or Eri’s music career, or saving Yuujin, or Astra’s AppTuber career, or getting back the Buddy Appmon’s memories.
Like through out the show we know the goal is the stop Leviathan, but how any of this connects to that goal or helps it feels really unclear. It makes the episodes start to kind of mush together in my memory as some meaningless slice of life filler when most of it isn’t filler, like I think there was only like 4 filler episodes in the show that you could totally skip.
In the end the whole Hajime & Bootmon arc felt like watching multiple, completely unrelated subplots unravel slowly until it all connects at the end.
And now we do the unfair thing and compare Appmon’s story arcs to Adventure’s. Adv didn’t really give us any huge goal for the characters beyond the Chosen returning to home (tho I could argue that all of these things are a requirements for the kids to go home but I digress), but yeah, here’s all the story arcs and summaries of them.
Devimon Arc: The kids try to find a way to go home (and try to survive)
Etemon Arc: The kids set out to try and defeat another enemy and obtain the Crests and Tags after being told to do so
PicoDevimon Arc: The kids reunite with one another
Vamdemon Arc: Stop Vamdemon from killing the 8th Chosen and taking over the Human World
Dark Masters Arc: Defeat the Masters to save the universe
See how easily you can break down Adventure into arcs and summarize the main plot of each arc? Do you remember how each arc connects and transitions from one to the next?
Even when Adventure’s pacing is questionable and it’s writing far from perfect, you can still see how each event connects to the next and how the progression of the story makes sense and feels natural; Adventure’s story flows
I’m not saying subplots that exist to develop characters or do world building or set up important things for the story are bad or anything, far from it, but there is like a difference between Yamato leaving Taichi and co to become a better person so that he can help Taichi defeat Piemon vs Eri wanting to quit being a part of Appliyama 470 because the group is owned by the bad guy (while the plot wants us to find Bootmon whomst we know nothing about because first we need to save Hajime so that he can exposition dump us to explain everything and reveal him and Bootmon were actually linked this entire time).
And... despite all of this whining... I STILL LOVE APPMON.
Appmon was funny, it had great comedy, it’s tributes to and references to previous seasons were adorable and wonderful and made me so happy, the characters were all well written and likeable, and the way everything seems to connect and wrap up in the end makes the show feel satisfied and make sense (more than Adventure ever does*). Oh and the CGI was great, fight me
Hell, Appmon made me question the whole “every episode has something important in it meaning you have to watch it” deal that Adventure has going for it as well, something I used to praise Adventure for, but now I question it; Appmon made me question Adventure’s writing
Appmon is and was an absolute delight and I absolutely reccomend it for everyone. I love Appmon. God damn I love that show so much
Tumblr media
Like I don’t even know what else to say, like my feelings on it really are just “I loved it except this one huge part about the overall writing” and it makes it frustrating for me to try and talk about it because I don’t wanna complain about Appmon that much because I still think it’s such a great show but all this whining makes it seem like it wasn’t and like aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh dfhdskfhdfkjghdksfg
GO WATCH APPMON IF YA HAVEN’T ALREADY, IT’S GREAT
*Y’all know me, I absolutely believe in the “all the villians were working together” theory, but it’s still just a theory and thus nowhere near as solid as all the established connections in Appmon

Taishirou Fic Notes: REPEAT?_
(For Chapters/Parts 1+2) Under the cut!... (... There’ll be spoilers for the entirety of the fic) (This is a preliminary draft/outline until I can make it neater ? looking yeah pfft) (Also see the original fic outline for more earlier elaboration)
-- Chapters 1+2 --
- These chapters are somewhat partly self explanatory; the ‘prologue’ of sorts that set everything up. I think they were the third/fourth or so pieces that I wrote / outlined for this thing? (After the couple of chapters towards the very end...) - This entire idea spawned when I was thinking of Taishiro AU ideas [including previous ones I’ve had] and basically going ‘what’s a Koushiro AU I hadn’t thought of yet??’ - Somehow my mind went ‘ARCHAEOLOGIST ..... KOUSHIRO’ ??? ‘PLUS TIMELOOPS / KAGEDAZE TAISHIRO AU’ ??? PLUS ‘COLLEGE AU’ ???? - Essentially I was thinking of careers Koushiro could have in the real world that would a) be suitable for him b) satisfy his thirst for Knowledge [while also relating to how Knowledge is used in the timeloops] c) would take him a while to complete, but be very worthwile to him in the end d) would have some mystery / intrigue involved, especially when connecting to the Digital World e) would keep him close to Taichi [because he relates tech with it, and is involved in higher education / etc., eventually it could lead to him still becoming a researcher like in the canon epilogue in the end, or in other spinoff AU thoughts... also Taichi having a law-related career that keeps him close to Koushiro] ... etc. etc. - then my mind went ‘OH THAT’S A GOOD IDEA I CAN ALSO RELATE IT TO ‘THAT THING’ YEAH’ (i.e. THE WELL the well where HE FINDS HIS CREST) - however in the back of my mind I was probably also thinking of a super-cute old Cardcaptor Sakura series 1 episode / moment in which then still mostly newly introduced “rival” to Sakura, Syaoran Li, watches Fujitaka Kinomoto’s archaeology presentation. Syaoran grows more and more interested the point he’s internally [and externally, but ‘hiding’ it (well ? from Fujitaka, badly otherwise)] cheering over it when Fujitaka offers to show him more archaeology related things in the future - only to immediately find out next Fujitaka is Sakura Kinomoto’s father [hahaaaa]. Of course Syaoran x Sakura becomes the canon couple in the end anyhow [hahaaaaa. sorry Syaoran ilu but you were pretty amusing back then and also v. tsun in that ‘fail’ kind of way] (some of his early tsun expressions kinda remind me of Adventure Taichi too??) (...Our War Game Taichi even kind of ??) - So my mind might have subconsciously been ‘combining’ all those things (along with an image in my head of photographer Koushiro from Tri studying things in the Digital World) and basically turning that implied Syaoran/Sakura + Archaeology things [if indirectly] into Taishiro + Archaeology AU yes - (also I was following CCS’s new Clear Card Arc at the time in both manga form first and then anime form, so ... yes it was at the back of my mind) - The first lines that basically spurred on this AU were the opening rambles / summary but more notably what immediately came to mind was Koushiro’s “Oh, I’M adopted.” - line, in response to Taichi’s dumb question literally HE WROTE HIMSELF (Koushiro - unfortunately - never has a scene in-show where he actually talks about it with the other Chosen, not even in an 02 era cd drama where he was literally visiting his biological parents’ graves and right after on the way home runs into the other Adventure Chosen sans Taichi and Yamato - and he STILL doesn’t even bring his biological parents up at all, not even that he was just visiting them like ‘oh, I was just on my way back from...’ - so essentially this is him saying it right off the bat and startling Taichi indirectly with it while he’s at it.) - It also prevents having to take forever to set that particular reveal up ... while at the same time taking forever to set that reveal up in Adventure universe and with more impact otherwise hahaaa. (CRY) - So, these two chapters are the setup. - You may notice there’s a feeling of ‘something’s definitely not quite right here’ or ‘something’s up’ all through these parts, the writing style (I basically kind of... mentally storyboard, then translate that into an outline, then storyboard again, then attempt to write anything etc. etc.), (but also the kind of ‘limited’ writing style, too) and basically the entire fic. That’s the timeloops effect lingering in the background, impacting events / feelings / actions, etc. Even the slightest things like Koushiro’s expressions as he regards Taichi, the tiniest movements he makes, or Taichi’s mind running a little (A LOT) more wildly than usual. - When Taichi first hears Koushiro’s ‘(smooth) voice drifting through the open door’, that’s basically the timeloops effect slamming into him right from the get-go. His mind is running wildly subconsciously too like ‘WHAT? WHAT?? WHAT???’ because he’s so confused / startled / scared / basically majorly freaked out to the point of a feeling of dread / horror etc. l-lolll poor Taichi I’M SORRY I love you really (this is also the KageDaze inspired effect because poor Hibiya there, too, [the boy] is basically this through most of the song) [specific dialogue notes] -  ‘ok, he's not really a "kid", he's a fellow adult, but Taichi's mind seems to insist on calling him that, for some reason....’ and all of the ‘his age’ bits etc. - Taichi’s mind is subconsciously relating Koushiro’s actual age to him (‘he’s younger than you think!!! you KNEW HIM IN SCHOOL!!! BEFORE!!!’) except he’s not fully realizing, of course. - short-cut spiky red hair and pure black eyes ('why are you staring so intently at his eyes, idiot!!') Again, timeloops effect slamming. Taichi’s recognizing Koushiro’s features right away and what stands out the most are his hair [dark red] and his eyes [somehow pure black (...lol fandom injoke?)]. This also relates in ch. 4, “Bridge” - when young Taichi notices Koushiro’s red hair ‘stands out the most’ in the light, and Koushiro’s (eyes are) staring right at him (because that young Koushiro’s becoming aware of the loops and freaked out / feeling dread crashing into him, himself). (also other similar parts of the fic) This also relates to novels Koushiro knowing he ‘stands out like a sore thumb’ in class (and how that line relates later with the Izumis / his adoption, as well.) - social sciences? Psychology? Health in general? Science itself? ARCHAEOLOGY??! Basically Koushiro is a freaking genuis [timeloops.... effect] [but also natural hhhh-ha] and subconsciously-or-not relating his career to as many ‘Knowledge’-gathering fields as possible, yeah. SLOW DOWN KOUSHIRO - and he's talking so animatedly and precisely and smartly because again, Child of Knowledge / timeloops. (He’d probably be an amazing professional teacher too negl) (and also how do both his seiyuu/voice actors sound so good HOW). Ok but for real, this is also simultaneously Koushiro’s ‘professional mode’ and / or his ‘mask’ so to speak. He’s enjoying it too, mostly, but... at the same time, it’s like going through the motions.... Koushiro ;A;/ - Taichi keeps staring at him, how is he so... pretty - ('wait what?!') ('but he kind of is, in that way where he has this glow about him-') Timeloops effect reminding him yes, Taichi, you are definitely attracted to Koushiro Izumi (maybe a bit too much) Koushiro’s ‘glow’ is basically him becoming animated / excited whenever he talks about Knowledge-related topics he’s particularly interested in! (But also kind of like... his inner... glow ehehhh....) - The presenter (Izumi?) turns around and stares at him directly, sharply, (kindly?) with those black eyes and says semi-brightly despite the situation he's in, in front of this room full of dumb college kids like Taichi himself - "Oh, I'M adopted." Dun dun dunnnn (hey, Taichi, did you REALLY get Koushiro’s last name/name or-) (...he didn’t) Now Koushiro’s directly focusing his attentions on Taichi, subconsciously recognizing him while he’s at it. He’s staring ‘kindly’ because of the warm feelings his subconscious / past self has towards Taichi; while also out of genuine kindness / intrigue from this universes’ Koushiro himself. Koushiro’s definitely feeling that ‘pull’ but at the same time warning bells are going off like crazy in his head too, and maybe subconsciously freaking him out too (although he’s a little more logical about it than Taichi, maybe... ...? or trying to not panic before he finishes this thing anyway) - After the presentation is over, the kid is gathering up his things outside the room, and fixing his slightly moved tie all neatly, and Taichi approaches him awkwardly from behind. THE TRUE MEETING and basically they’re both subconsciously knowing they were going to have to talk here but .... - "Izumi" turns to stare at him, more intently, now. "It's all right. ...?" (He was a little confused as to why this cool looking kid [??] bothered apologizing to him for that, but he accepts it...) Koushiro’s staring intently because he’s so hyper-focused subconsciously, but also because he likes giving his full attention where it matters in general, too. Also ‘cool looking kid’ is Taichi’s mind thinking maybe that’s how Koushiro might see him, basically. (TAICHI PLS....) (ok but he also added the ‘??’ because he realizes... yeah TAICHI PLS) (Koushiro was a bit surprised this boy actually did think to apologize, but....) - Koushiro smiles slightly. Actually smiles. KOUSHIRO’S SMILES ARE VERY IMPORTANT IN THIS FIC OK Koushiro smiles so impassioned-ly at the start of everything (especially in this verse, where he rarely gets the chance to smile AT ALL it doesn’t help that this Koushiro didn’t go to the Digital World, didn’t make any close friends, DIDN’T MEET TENTOMON OR TAICHI and etc....) - so that when this Koushiro smiles genuinely, it’s SUPER IMPORTANT, OK - "Are you interested? I'm afraid the next dig is already scheduled very soon, but..." "Wait, you're leaving, soon-?!" ('Shut up, you idiot!!') Koushiro is looking at him oddly now - Taichi’s mind is going even more wild with the warning bells and basically yelling ‘SOMETHING’S DEFINITELY WRONG HERE DON’T LET HIM GO IF YOU LET HIM GO HE’S GOING TO UP AND LEAVE AND YOU’LL NEVER SEE HIM AGAIN !!!!!’ (Also his mind running wild kind of parallels Ep 21′s inspirations too??) (don’t forget Taichi hasn’t had a lot of his ‘character development’ here as well) Koushiro’s looking at him oddly because he’s having a similar feeling but trying to figure out what the heck is up with this and ... this boy... ? - Koushiro is about ready to have to leave again, and Taichi thinks as fast as he can. Taichi’s not ... as known for his thinking deeply in canon when he’s younger (lol) (well, um, pre...? SkullGreymon ? anyhow maybe w-wah) and considering WARNING BELLS he’s basically thinking of the ‘last resort’ type thing he can say / ask / (yell?) / etc. (or - BAM, TIMELINE OVER BAD END). - "W-Wait, which area are you in-?" Koushiro turns with a raised eyebrow and another slight smile. Koushiro’s raising his eyebrow / smiling because he’s basically internally thinking ‘...This one, hmm ..... ‘ - He lives in fucking Odaiba. Literally a block away from Taichi. ('SHIIIIIIIIIIT') ('TAICHI YOU ARE AN IDIOT') ... oh. (yeah) (TIMELOOOOOOPS EFFEEEEEECT) (TAICHI YOU ARE AN IDIOT) -- Chapter 2 -- (kind of) - He doesn't know how it happens, but in some other universe somewhere, he probably ends up not walking Koushiro home and regretting it for the rest of his life when Koushiro just ups and leaves on an archaeology dig somewhere and Taichi never sees him again - ('Seriously, stop thinking!!') So yeah, that part about ‘YOU’LL NEVER SEE HIM AGAIN’ ?? [Taichi(+Koushiro) avoided the BAD END ?? ?] [to be continued]

Aftermath
‘Alice in Wonderland’ was Sora’s favourite story as a little girl. She remembered laughing at the sheer lack of sense everything made (much like their adventures in the Digiworld) and scoffing at the part where Alice met the Mad Hatter and his friends. How silly it was of them to piss off the Lord of Time himself and forever be stuck in that single moment of time (one minute before tea time if she remembered correctly).
Taking that into account and her present circumstances, Sora couldn’t help but wonder whether the Lord of Time was playing a cruel joke and what had she and her friends done to deserve it. It felt like she had been standing there for an eternity since the partner Digimon had disappeared along with the distortion, since time had stopped and silence had embraced her.
Koushiro’s laptop screen flashed red, the worlds ‘REBOOT COMPLETE’ as stark and powerful as a bullet to the heart. Looking at those words Sora had never felt so much, yet felt so empty at the same time.
Piyomon was gone… their partners were gone…gone…gone…gone. Probably dead, most likely rebooted, their human partners most definitely forgotten.
If Sora allowed herself to feel more she may have hysterically laughed at the solution for the infected Digimon boiling down to a simple ‘did you turn it off and on again.’ Who knew that could take away so much?
It seemed however that the Lord of Time had decided to release her (she wasn’t sure that was much better) as the silence and stillness was broken by Takeru’s soft voice. ‘Patamon was the first one infected…. But I couldn’t say a thing because I was afraid.’
It was just a few days earlier that Sora had admitted to herself and to Piyomon (oh god she didn’t want to think of Piyomon now) that she was ‘the mum of the group’ and it was those instincts that snapped her out of her daze. As Sora came back to herself she noticed Takeru bursting into tears, Yamato rushing over to embrace his brother (as much for himself as it was for Takeru), Mimi falling to her knees sobbing and Meiko clutching her hands over her mouth as tears streamed down her face. If she looked a little more she would notice how Hikari’s brown eyes filled with tears of sorrow and disbelief and Taichi’s pained expression as he clenched his fists (Soon he would have to open his eyes and confront reality). She noticed as Koushiro stood up, his usually intelligent eyes staring ahead not comprehending anything, his laptop discarded on the ground and she noticed how much Jou was shaking as he softly and repeatedly called Gommamon’s name. Looking very much like a tall and spindly tree about to be uprooted by the wind, she wanted to reach out and prevent him from falling. She wanted to reach out and care for them all, sooth their pain and do her best to bandage their wounds. She was the mother of the group right? So it should be easy to help them surely? Much easier than focusing on how much she was hurting…but she couldn’t. Her own glass walls of emotion both so poignant and so lacking prevented her from doing so.
‘We shouldn’t stay here for too long…’ Mr Nishijima’s voice broke through the silence, his tone low and his eyes full of sympathy (but he could never understand what it was like to lose a partner…oh god…poor Takeru-Kun had lost his twice! Sora wished desperately to both embrace him and to run away…..neither of which she could do) ‘I’ll take all of you home.’
Wanting to ignore him but knowing their ‘teacher’ was right the Digidestined followed him to the parked jeep. The seating area at the back as symbolically cold and empty as they felt. Sora felt detached from her body now, tethered to it like a balloon to a bed post. She again could only watch as Hikari burrowed into her brothers arms, shoulders shaking with silent sobs and as Meiko sat as far away from the rest of them as she could. Head down and shoulder hunched, Sora felt like she should try console new girl but at the moment she couldn’t really bring herself care.
She could not hate herself more for her inaction as she watched Jou carefully place Koushiro’s laptop in its owner’s arms. That’s right; she remembered her friend had left behind his prized procession as he tried to get into the van as fast as his legs would allow him. She had seen it happen; she could have picked it up for him but she didn’t (thank goodness for Jou!).
Nishijima had started the jeep and the Digidestined watched as they got further away from the battle ground.  They weren’t taken home immediately, Nishijima was stationed at the school for a reason, he was deeply empathetic and he knew none of the children (even if they didn’t say it) were quite ready to be alone or go home to their empty bedrooms. He bought them hot tea to sip on and just drove, taking random streets until the sun had set and he figured the kids were as ready as they’ll ever be to go home.
The jeep remained silent the whole while, broken only by the occasional muffled sob and shuffle of one of the younger teenagers, both of whom had cried themselves to sleep (In Takeru’s case it was more like he had passed out from a combination of despair and exhaustion, the culmination of several nights of sleep lost to dealing with Patamon’s infection. In Hikari’s case her sleep was more a light and uneasy doze).  Sora was eventually reeled back into her body as the vehicle jolted to a stop in front of Meiko and the Yagami sibling’s building. Hikari was immediately awake (albeit groggy but then she’s always been a light sleeper, even when she was eight) and she clutched onto Taichi as they stood to leave. Sora reached out to steady her but was too late to even offer a word of comfort to Meiko as her friend bolted out of the jeep’s open doors. Sora then turned her eyes towards Taichi (she had to try now…Her friends were hurting and she wanted to help them.  Surely that would be much better than thinking about how much she already missed Piyomon?)
‘Is there anything I can do? Anything you need? Please don’t hesitate to call me!’  Taichi just returned her gaze (his eyes shouldn’t look so old…) ‘It’s alright Sora… We’ll cope…’ he said softly, his mouth twisting into a weary grin ‘even a mama bears got to look after herself!’ It felt like a shot to the heart and Taichi knew it immediately. His expression turned panicked ‘I…I…mean… you need to worry about yourself too…I’m sorry Sora.’  (He didn’t need to apologise, she knew he didn’t mean it…it was her that wasn’t good enough). Not sure what else he could do he turned to his sister ‘Hikari are you ready to go?’ The girl briefly nodded before reaching over to touch her best friend’s hair ‘Takeru-Kun…’ (Sora remembered how Hikari had held him from the moment he collapsed after Angemon succumbed to the infection).
Yamato finally spoke ‘I’ll look after him Hikari-Chan…’  (Sora couldn’t help but notice how his arms tightened around his brother, knuckles turning white). ‘Thank you Yamato- San…’ Hikari was then quick to latch onto her brother, who shared a brief look and nod with Yamato before bidding everyone goodnight. He then shot Sora one last apologetic look, before he and his sister finally stumbled out of the jeep arms wrapped around the other’s waist.
Nishijima started the jeep again, Sora took the seat next to Takeru and Yamato as the silence returned. Takeru looked so small, face tucked into the crook of his brother’s neck, the tears that had long since dried leaving a web of tear tracks down his face. Sora was about to say something to Yamato but she was cut off by Nishijima announcing they had arrived at Takeru’s apartment complex. The teacher then turned around to address Yamato ‘I’ll wait until you drop him off and then take you home.’ ‘Not need to bother Sensei….. Take the others home… no need to get up Jou… I’m gonna stay with my brother. I don’t want to leave him alone.’
Sora helped Yamato pull Takeru onto his back, getting out of the jeep with him. She briefly, much as Hikari had done earlier, rested her hand on top of his head as if she could channel what strength she had into him. She then lifted her other hand to touch Yamato’s shoulder before asking ‘You don’t want to be alone either do you?’ Blue eyes met hers, before he broke into a sad smile ‘Yeah.’ And then he left. She couldn’t help but watch him go; he was so much like her… when he was hurt he channelled his energy into looking after others. She suddenly longed for the days when they were dating, before they drifted into the hard-to-define status their relationship was in now (of loving each other but not quite being together), when they would sit for hours on his balcony saying nothing and holding hands. She wanted it now but she knew she would never be able to break through his defences and ground him the way his baby brother did.
Nishijima called her back into the jeep, as she got back in she couldn’t help but notice how much more imposing the silence was. She looked towards the remaining Digidestined; Mimi’s head was gently resting against Jou’s shoulder as she let out the occasional whimper and Jou had his phone open, staring at the name of the person who could only be his girlfriend, his finger hovering over the ‘dial’ button. Sora sat next to Koushiro (who had his head in his hands), ignoring the pool of oolong tea that had spilled on the floor, resting her hand on his shoulder as she did so (She had the crest of Love… She had to think of the others...If she didn’t then she would think of Piyomon and she couldn’t handle it right now) and was rewarded with a small smile of gratitude for her efforts.
It wasn’t long before they arrived at Mimi’s, Mr Nishijima standing up to escort her to her door (as he had done for the others). Sora watched her best friend stand up, still graceful despite looking like a wilted flower, giving everyone left a brief hug before she departed. Her hug with Sora lasted a little longer as Sora asked her to ‘do her best to get a goodnight sleep’ and tried to rub away the tears that still escaped her friend’s eyes.
Koushiro was next to be dropped home but his departure was different from the others. While the others had left dejected (or practically unconscious in Takeru’s case), the bearer of Knowledge seemed to have come to a realization of sorts. He gave her had a grateful pat as he got up, looked both Jou and Sora in the eye with the promise he would think of a solution, then bowed politely and thanked Mr Nishijima. He then left, determination in his eyes and his back straighter than it had been before.
And then there were two…  the journey to Sora’s once again took place in relative silence, broken only by the sounds of traffic and the random snatches of conversation caught through the open window. Sora was dimly aware of the jeep coming to a stop, before Nishijima was opening the door and announcing that he would walk her to the complex’s entrance. She turned to her friend and said ‘goodnight Jou-Sempai’ before getting up to leave. She was however stopped by a hand on her wrist and before she knew it she found herself in Jou’s tight embrace. ‘Before you say this is out of character for me… I j…just want you to know that Taichi’s right….you need to look after yourself too….and thank you for looking after the others.’
‘But I didn’t do a very good job!’
‘Sora-san, you did your best and that’s enough.’ She was then released from the hug and he returned to his seat.
Feeling almost displaced, Sora could only mutely nod at him before she followed her teacher to the entrance of her building. She then thanked him and after receiving advice from him along the same lines Jou gave her, went inside. It was a full ten minutes before she could even bring herself to open the door.
It was just as she turned the handle that everything; all the pain, shock, feelings of uselessness and silence from the evening finally came crashing down on her. She flung open the front door, startling her mother before bolting to her room (she barely heard her mother’s confused questions as to where she had been so long and where was Piyomon). Sora then proceeded to wrap herself in her futon (only stopping to kick off her sticky shoes) before curling into a foetal position under the covers, she didn’t even realize she was sucking in huge gulps of air as she squeezed her eyes shut and shook uncontrollably.
Piyomon was gone…gone….gone! What use was those six years of memories if she didn’t have anyone to share them with?
In her grief she almost missed the sound of footsteps entering her room and her covers being lifted as her Mother slipped under the futon and warm arms wrapped around her. It was then that Sora allowed herself to cry tears of anger, frustration and sadness until she was exhausted.
For the first time in years, since she was a little girl eager to hear about Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Sora slept in her mother’s arms.
After all how could she be a mother to anyone else, when all she wanted since her partner was lost was her own mother?

[fanfic] Unholy Desires:  Chapter 9
One second, nothing but the deepest of shadows and being utterly unaware of what went on around him. Only that single voice that whispered in the very depths of his mind, telling him to stay that way, that it was far too soon to wake up, that he needed to recover his strength and sleep was one of the ways. Another way would come when he woke up.
And in the next second, or so it seemed to him, Taichi opened his eyes and found himself staring at the underside of the bunk bed. He blinked a few times before he swung his legs off the side and sat up, his stomach rumbling and ravenous for something meat-related. Or maybe some fish. He wasn’t picky.
“Hikari? Do we have any beef bowls? Or fish? Something! I’m starving!”
He rubbed his eyes and blinked, staring. He didn’t expect to see everyone else there. He really didn’t expect to see them all looking so – disturbed.
Oh. Wait. It wasn’t everyone else. Yamato wasn’t there.
In a swift deluge, all the memories came back. Yamato – Yamato wasn’t – he’d been – he’d -
One hand flew up to the side of his neck and he winced at the faint hint of soreness there. He shook his head, trying to get everything put together, and not having a lot of success.
“Hikari? What’s going on? What’s got everyone so upset?” Wait – why were their Digimon here where Hikari could see them? She wasn’t -
She moved over to settle down beside him, offering a tiny smile. “You’re awake.”
“Yeah. What’s going on?” He glanced towards the window and blinked to see the first hints of sunrise. The last he’d been aware it had been … the night before? Or so he hoped…
Hikari glanced towards Koushiro. He, Jou, and Sora looked more worried than Mimi or Takeru did. Well, Takeru looked worried too but it sort of was different.
“Guys? What did I miss?”
Koushiro drew in a breath and came over, hugging his laptop close to him. “We’ve been busy all right. First, we know now who the Eighth Child is. It’s Hikari-san.”
Taichi stared at her. She nodded a little, holding up a small device – her Digivice. “Um…” Well, that was progress, at least? “Who’s your partner?”
“Tailmon!” Hikari grinned at that, her eyes glowing in deep warmth tinged by worry. “She and Wizarmon went off to find my Crest. But – they never came back.”
Taichi wasn’t sure of what he’d just heard. Tailmon – that little cat Digimon who attacked them before? One of Vamdemon’s servants? His head throbbed faintly and his stomach rumbled loud enough for everyone to turn and look at him.
Hikari got up. “I’ll get you some breakfast. Mom and Dad are still asleep. We – they know about the Digimon. They want to talk to you when they get up.”
Oh. He really had missed a lot. He rubbed the back of his neck. “What about Yamato? Has anyone seen him?”
“Not really. But we know more than we did,” Koushiro said. He flipped up his laptop and turned it to face Taichi. On the screen was Yamato, looking as he normally did – but there was a screenful of information there as well. Taichi read it by instinct.
Anbumon: half-human son of Piemon and Takaishi Natsuko, known on Earth as Ishida Yamato. Ultimate Level. Digimon Partner: Gabumon. Healer. Known attacks include Deep Sleep and Obsidian Strike. He is the corrupted Viral side of Chiguumon. Cold, arrogant, and quite possibly the strongest Digimon in existence save for the Holy Beasts themselves.
There was a great deal more but Taichi could hardly believe what he’d already seen.
“… Yamato’s – he’s – he’s not human?” That was going to take a lot of getting used to. “What is that? How did you find out?”
Koushiro tapped his laptop. “One of the programs that Gennai put on here is an addition to the Digimon Analyzer. The ordinary Analyzer can’t detect a human-Digimon crossbreed. That’s probably why we haven’t noticed anything until now. But I checked us all, on Jou-san’s recommendation. Only you, Hikari, Mimi, and Takeru are full humans.”
“The rest of us are part Digimon – or more,” Sora said, raising her head. Piyomon snuggled up against her and Sora’s hand caressed over her feathers. “I-I’m – Devimon.” She shook her head, shoulders shuddering, and turned away.
Jou kept his own head down, staring at his fingers. “Vamdemon. And – I suspected before this.”
Taichi took a step over towards him. “What do you mean?” He wondered if he’d actually woken up or if this were some amazingly realistic part of whatever dreams he’d had. He didn’t remember dreaming, but…
“I mean ever since we landed in the Digital World, I’ve – I’ve wanted to drink blood.” Jou shuddered, looking a great deal paler for a few seconds. “I thought I was feeling a little anemic, but then all of this started to happen, and I wondered ” He shook his head. “I’d rather not go anywhere near Vamdemon. I don't know if he knows – or what he could do.”
Taichi rested a hand on Jou’s shoulder. The whole idea of him being part vampire – or part Digimon – didn’t mean a thing to him. What did matter was that his friend was upset. “Don’t worry about it. If he does anything, we’ll stop him. We’ll stop him even if he doesn’t, just so he can’t!”
“He’s right!” Mimi declared. “I don’t care what he is, he’s not going to hurt any of us anymore!” She glanced at Takeru. “And that means we're getting Yamato back, too!”
Takeru’s smile brightened the tiniest bit. Taichi looked at Koushiro. “You said you were too?” He still wasn’t entirely convinced he wasn’t dreaming, so better to go along with it until he woke up.
“Yes. Me.” Koushiro actually fidgeted. Taichi hadn’t really seen him do that before. The redhead stared down at the laptop before he tapped a few keys and then shifted it around so Taichi could see it.
There was Koushiro, and a list of information. Taichi read through it, then blinked. “You’re an actual Digimon, not a – a hybrid?” He wasn’t sure of what else to call them. Were they going to have to invent a term?
“Apparently so. I – I want to talk to my parents about this. And to Leomon, if we return to the Digital World. Which we may have to. Those who have Digimon blood in them need the Digital World now that we’ve been there. Apparently we can survive without it – up until the blood itself awakens, for lack of a better term. But once it has, we need to be there as much as any other Digimon.”
Leomon. Taichi glanced again. Oh. Right. He was Koushiro’s – father. Sire? Whatever. He didn’t recognize the other name, though. Probably a Digimon that they hadn’t met.
Then something else occurred to him. “What was that – Chiguumon in Yamato’s profile?”
“That is something else that Jou-san and Sora-san have to deal with,” Koushiro said. He flicked the screen back to Yamato’s. “It appears that when a Virus Digimon and a human produce an offspring, then the potential for a “dark side” of sort exists. Somewhat like SkullGreymon, but the intelligence level is vastly different. It isn’t exactly an evolution but more of an alteration. This alteration manifests more or less as a different personality. That personality – and his Digimon blood – were awakened when Yamato was bitten by Vamdemon. That is Anbumon. Chiguumon is his natural state. Anbumon is the dark side – the corruption awakened by Vamdemon.”
Taichi wondered if the nausea that stirred up was because of hearing that or because Hikari hadn’t yet gotten back with his breakfast. Probably both. He settled himself back on his bed and tried to put all of this together.
“Also,” Koushiro added, and Taichi wondered what else he could take, “this mention of Piemon. We don’t know who that is but given that Yamato is apparently an Ultimate level Digimon – a level that we previously weren’t even aware existed – it stands to reason that he is going to be our enemy. We will have to return to the Digital World.”
“Oh.” Taichi couldn’t really say that bothered him a lot. He rather liked the Digital World and if they could get home now and then, he wouldn’t have minded spending more time there. Though going back to fight a powerful enemy wasn’t exactly his idea of a fun vacation.
Worry about that later, he decided, especially when Hikari entered with a tray of food, all of which smelled delicious and put every other thought out of his head for the moment.
As he ate, he started putting together what they were going to have to do. Find Tailmon and her friend and get Hikari’s Crest, then find a way to break Vamdemon’s hold over Yamato and get him back, and then find a way to defeat Vamdemon once and for all. Going back to the Digital World to face whatever they found there could wait – would have to wait – until after that.
“Taichi?” He looked up to see his parents in the doorway. He yelped for a second, coming to his feet, his first instinct to hide all of the Digimon. But both of them smiled little, weary smiles at him.
“Your friends told us all about what happened. I admit I wasn’t sure what to think, but you’re going to do what you need to do no matter what, aren’t you?” His mother said. Taichi slowly nodded.
“We thought you would,” his father said with an approving nod. “Be careful. All of you be careful. We heard about what that monster did to your other friend.”
Taichi’s eyes fell over to where Gabumon’s egg lay, wrapped in blankets and with Agumon and Gomamon next to it. Would Gabumon ever hatch again?
“We’re going to get him back,” he promised. He wanted to believe that with every scrap of his body. He could not shake the memory of Yamato – of Anbumon’s hands on him, the way his teeth pressed into Taichi's own skin, the sound of that velvet-soft voice purring in his ear, sending shocks through him that he’d never experienced, not even in those first few moments of meeting when the part of him that was a Firestarter sparked against the part of Yamato that were a Healer.
That's right, he reminded himself, he’s not just a Healer. He’s my Healer. They weren’t bonded yet but that was mostly just a matter of courting – proper bonds weren’t allowed to be formed until both partners were of legal age, in their case eighteen. But still, he and Yamato both knew. Everything that had happened in the Digital World only made both of them that much more certain that this was the one they wanted to bond to.
There were other things that Taichi thought he might want to do but that would have to come later. It wasn’t unknown for Healers and Firestarters to date as well as bond to one another. Not often, because a bond was lifelong once forged and romantic relationships didn’t always last forever, but it could happen.
He’d been told that many times growing up. Maybe somewhere along the way it had actually sunk in.
A startled noise came from the window where Mimi stood. Everyone surged over there, children and parents alike. She raised one hand and pointed, trembling. At first Taichi wasn’t sure about what she was trying to show them. Then he saw it. He saw them.
“They’re Bakemon,” Jou whispered. “We saw them on File Island. Vamdemon must have brought them along too.”
“What are they doing?” Taichi's mother asked, trembling. Taichi wasn’t sure at first, until it became obvious.
“They’re taking people,” he said. And so they were. The Bakemon swept into the apartment buildings and dragged people out, urging them towards somewhere. This had to be part of Vamdemon’s plan. Which meant they needed one of their own.
“Everyone,” he decided, “go find your families and get them to safety. Stop as many of the Bakemon as you can. Something must have happened to Tailmon.” He had a strong feeling that ‘something’ was either Vamdemon or Anbumon – or probably Vamdemon and Anbumon. “Once they’re safe, we’ll try to find her, and then finish off Vamdemon.”
He hoped that it would be as easy as he made it sound. But it probably wouldn’t. He clenched his fists, sparks dancing over them.
Vampires burned, didn’t they? He was more than ready to find out.

Notes: Yes, I did a time jump. It was necessary for story purposes. And now action can begin to happen!

[ Here are some of my coherent thoughts on Shoushitsu + Tri overall, hopefully more organized than the string of upper-case letters I splattered across everyone’s dashboards a few days ago. This is INCREDIBLY long and all based on my personal speculation and the limited knowledge of mythology + themes outside of the adventure-verse, so I hope that dividing it into sections is helpful if anyone actually wants to read this and everything should be taken with a grain of salt. ]
So before I go any farther, I feel like I should say that I loved Shoushitsu. I’m becoming quite the apologist for it but I mean, I’ve been waiting my entire life for Sora to not be written out of a movie. While her character development leaves much to be desired, I have a ton of faith in the next two movies. I’d like to wait for those to come out before I make any definite judgments about whether Tri did Sora justice or not. I remember reading interviews with the Tri crew before Saikai came out, and the way they spoke about the characters really made me believe that they understand how important they are to us. I have faith that this is still well-planned. Little parts of Shoushitsu actually reaffirmed that for me. Now, if the next two movies don’t pull through I will totally eat my words, but as of now, I’m genuinely pretty happy.
On Sora’s Arc: I don’t think it’s complete. To be honest, I don’t think any of the kid’s arcs are complete, so I’m 100% setting myself up for disappointment with the last movie, but once again I’m keeping the faith that something’s planned. Anyways, I think we all saw Sora’s problem coming from a mile away. She’s an introvert who tries to get her energy from others. If she can’t be motherly she feels like she has no purpose. Everyone grows up except for digimon. What would she do if Piyomon wasn’t around? Apparently, totally crash and burn and turn invisible to her friends.
I noticed a lot of references to Meiko throughout Sora’s ordeal. Meiko’s a newcomer and arguably the source of all their problems. Sora spent a considerable amount of time worrying about her and trying to include her in the group. The moment Pyocomon rejects Sora, you can literally see the darkness in her eyes and the entire first episode I was yelling at my screen about how nobody noticed her obvious depression. I really like the way sad Sora was animated. It was resonating. Someone should have felt it, and I think Sora knew that too. Instead, we see everyone consistently worrying about Meiko. Taichi declares that she’s part of the group and that they have a responsibility to reunite her with Meicoomon. So where does that leave Sora, who’s also very separated from her partner? I think this speaks a lot to the scene around the campfire later that night. They’re discussing how Meiko’s just a normal girl and pondering whether she’d make it in the digital world. Someone says that she probably wouldn’t. Sora has a strikingly out of character moment when she agrees with them. “Probably.”
I think that was Sora’s true low point. She threw someone under the bus for morally questionable reasons. It seems like Sora felt excluded not just by Piyomon, but replaced by her entire group of friends that she’d spent years emotionally investing in. “I just wanted to be recognized” is such a meaningful line. She’s not one to try and profit off someone else’s misfortune, so if Sora felt any true darkness, I’d say this was the moment.
To make matters worse, another scene that stuck with me is when the kids first realize that Meicoomon’s memory is still intact. Sora’s the first one to really question it and ponder about whether the reboot was really worth it. When Koushiro confirms that it likely wasn’t, I think Sora sort of cracked. The comparisons to Meiko are still relevant here.
In the end, Sora ultimately solves her own problem and is able to reconnect with Piyomon. She’s persistent and Piyomon realizes that she’s “a big softie”. I question how much of this is due to Sora evolving as a character and Piyomon just deciding to not be such an asshole, but still. No one held her hand through any of it. Even if she wanted someone to, she didn’t let anyone. I can easily make the case here that nothing about Sora really changed- she just hit rock bottom and was able to bounce back. My instinct is that if Piyomon were to change her mind and reject Sora again, she’d fall right back into the same depression. There’s still the potential for Sora to see that darkness and like so many of the chosen’s problems, they remanifest in different ways. Sora will continue to struggle with feelings of self-worth, which is disappointing, but when it’s so deeply embedded it’s also unrealistic to see it solved in a single movie.
I think what matters most about the conclusion is the affirmation of one of Sora’s core beliefs. They and their digimon partners are exceptional. They’ll always be connected, no matter what happens. This is the thought Sora uses to cheer Meiko up and Meiko repeats it right back to her. I think the Tri crew was trying to emphasize it’s importance. More than anything, I think what matters here is that Sora’s darkness caused her to question that belief. Who is she if the value she always relied on isn’t true? What’s the use of her words if they’re just cliches? If they and their partners aren’t exceptional, how can she not consistently be anxious about the future?
I did appreciate the end of Sora’s arc. You see the “taiorato” triangle reversed. (And, in fact, you see the taiorato crew in different triangle formations at many points during Shoushitsu. For me it highlighted changing dynamics.) In the first movie, Taichi and Yamato stood in front of her and we see Sora in the background worrying between them. At the end of Shoutshitsu, it’s Sora front and center with Pyocomon held close. Taichi and Yamato are standing behind her, probably wondering how it’s possible to suppress so many negative emotions, but Sora could care less. It highlights the importance of her friendship with Piyomon over everyone else. Everything fell back into place (thankfully) and she can move forward. As long as Piyomon understands her, they can regrow.
And this is good. A scene I particularly enjoyed in Adventure is the one where they finally encounter Sora after she’s realized she has the crest of love. The only reason Sora got any emotional closure from that is because she opened up. Why did she open up? Piyomon told her she should. Piyomon helped her explain her feelings. Piyomon asked everyone to understand. I think Piyomon acts as Sora’s translator. No one really understands her and I question whether Sora actually wants them to. When it comes down to it I think she just wants to love and be loved in return. The only thing is that Sora still hasn’t learned to truly love herself. She’ll have to one day, but I’m not sure if we’ll see it.
I’d like to take a moment to discuss whether Sora was “shafted” or not. On the surface it definitely does. However, when you look closely, it seems like the writers really took the time to look at her major arcs in Adventure. There are many parallels that are meaningful if you know where to look, which echoes the way that Sora’s friends really need to treat her. Just like Takeru continued to evolve in this film (which he did, it wasn’t just Patamon ‘stealing the spotlight’), I think Sora has the potential to continue growing in the next two installments. Should she? Yes. Will she? ...Probably not. Am I still hopeful? Yeah, absolutely.
On Taichi & Yamato: Their interactions in this film took years off my life. There’s a scene involving Machinedramon where Tentomon’s buzzing around mumbling “Oh my goodness! Oh my goodness!” and there isn’t a more accurate comparison to me watching Shoushitsu for the first time. I loved every minute of it.
Let’s start with Taichi. We know that he doesn’t understand Sora. I’m always brought back to Sora’s CD drama when she first tells Taichi she’s quitting football to play tennis. Taichi’s totally dumbfounded. He thinks that Sora’s losing herself and he questions her decision. Sora becomes flustered, and if I’m remembering correctly, doesn’t even offer Taichi an explanation. She just gives up. It’s like she already knows it would be no use to try and tell him that her starting tennis is a result of her allowing herself to truthfully grow. I think that Taichi was spot on throughout this entire movie in terms of his interactions with Sora. No complaints from me. The entire movie could have been Taichi following Sora around in the woods like a lost puppy and I would’ve been happy. There are a few key moments that stuck out to me, though.
First, there’s Taichi saying “I could never understand you, Sora” before echoing something Piyomon said to Sora before. She takes care of her own problems and never tells anyone else. (Does she really take care of her own problems though??) Anyways, in Adventure, Taichi tries to cheer Sora up by telling her that she cares for everyone else. He thinks that’s good. Sora instantly shoots back at him and says he doesn’t know her and he should stop speaking like he does. To me, Taichi’s reaction here made it seem like he never forgot that conversation. He doesn’t understand her. If he made that implication in the future he’d probably get chewed out again. In Taichi’s very literal head, his comment probably sounded completely rational and that sort of makes me laugh. Interactions like this with Sora just seem to never go in his favor and it’s like he’s started to just accept it.
Still, it’s easy for the viewers to see how much he cares for her. Taichi struggles to maintain a necessary level of consideration in order to make Sora feel better. He laughs with Agumon in the river as Sora walks away, he calls her a big pain, he tells her to chill out, and basically repetitively word vomits into her hat and wonders why she won’t put it on... all things that remind me of their friendship in adventure. It highlights the youthfulness of their friendship. His teasing her is incredibly thoughtless and poorly timed, but we’ve seen this a million times before and we don’t question whether he cares for her.
One of my favorite scenes in all of Shoushitsu is Meiko and Sora’s encounter with not-Gennai (as I’m gonna start referring to him because he’s creepy af, but more on that later). Sora, who clearly hasn’t planned beyond the next couple of seconds, starts throwing rocks around and finds herself in a physical tussle with the enemy. This is the second or third scene of many in which Sora should have probably died, but the other cool thing about Shoushitsu is that we learned Sora’s bones are made of metal. Anyways, as Sora’s digging herself into this hole, about to hit six feet under, portals open up to all the other chosen children. We don’t really see anyone’s reaction, but we know they can see everything. The one person that we do zone in on is Taichi. He’s staring up at the scene, wide-eyed with worry, and he mutters Sora’s name in disbelief. I really enjoyed two small details about this scene: the timing and the portal’s location. Just before Sora’s fight, we see Taichi talking to Gabumon about whether being chosen matters anymore. He had faith that he could have Agumon digivolve if he needed to, but that obviously didn’t happen. I started to wonder if Taichi was reminded of SkullGreymon, etc. I think a big misconception about Taichi is that he’s always ready to charge. In Tri he’s clearly not, but he wasn’t always that way in Adventure either. It’s actually pretty common for Taichi to freeze and to question himself, and that scene sets him up to be in that mindset. And just, HIS EYES. When he sees Sora it’s like he freezes again. He’s already feeling useless, he couldn’t help Sora before, she’s about to get totally obliterated by Machinedramon’s cannon, and the portal that appears in his area is up the side of a cliff that looks like it’s at least 100 feet tall.
That animation probably didn’t mean anything, but it was neat to think about how quickly Taichi probably had to scramble up there to rescue his friend. I imagine him instantly side-lining his doubts and stereo-typically jumping into action, which he hasn’t been able to do all season. If that happened then Sora was the cause. I like to imagine that Taichi was thinking he couldn’t let her down again. His face made it seem like his life was flashing before his eyes, and perhaps he was remembering all the times he’d froze to Sora’s detriment. Nanomon’s the best example. Sora almost died and whether it was actually Taichi’s fault or not (ok it 80% is), he knows what it’s like to live with the guilt of losing her. Now, I also believe scenes like Nanomon’s treated Sora as kinda disposable for Taichi’s character development (another post for another day), and Shoutshitsu towed a fine line with this, so I’m glad that they didn’t show him scrambling up the cliff. Still, it’s an interesting thought. I only rewound the scene a handful of times.
Now moving on to Yamato, I have some... complaints. But don’t we all with him? Anyways, in the broader scheme of things I also appreciated his interactions with Sora. It’s obvious that he cares and that he’s more attune with her feelings. He has a better sense of what’s inappropriate and what isn’t. Still, he’s struggling, and I don’t know whether I totally buy it. When Yamato went right along with Taichi in calling Sora a big pain (just before I yelled that Sora could kill the two of them in the digital world and no one would ever know) I asked myself a pretty good question. What the fuck is Yamato’s deal? I actually don’t think we really know. We’ve gotten a good picture of the way he’s grown, but most of his issues have revolved around Taichi. I hope we circle back around to him later and see him work through some crisis that explains this. I think he should understand Sora better than this, whether they’re together or not. My only logical explanation for the way he acts is that Taichi’s around. I wonder if Yamato would have acted differently had he approached Sora alone.
I’ve also heard a lot of mixed reactions to the lack of Sorato in Shoushitsu. I’m kind of glad that their (non) relationship wasn’t emphasized. It would have detracted from Sora solving her own problems. I’m starting to think that Sora and Yamato really aren’t together, otherwise I don’t know if Taichi would’ve tagged along for the conversation. He’s always been pretty thoughtful about giving them their space, it seems. Remember the first time we see the three of them in Saikai? Anyways, as someone who ships Sorato, Taiora, and Taiorato, my hopes of seeing some new information are dwindling. However, I really do think that we’ll get a small scene in the last movie. If the Tri crew is serious about connecting things to the epilogue I think they’d tack something in about them making up, or something reinforcing the fact that they’re together. Maybe they’re saving it till last to capitalize on those $$profits$$ but I think there’ll be something.
On Gennai: There’s been a lot of contention about the scene. I’ll be the first to admit that it made me hella uncomfortable. It’s long and drawn out and I was uncomfortable enough watching him search for her digivice, and then that other thing did me in. I acknowledge that Tri’s goal with this was to make people uncomfortable. The kids are grown up. Things are dark. This show isn’t for kids. Mission accomplished. I particularly like the way not-Gennai speaks. Excellent job by the voice actor TBH. Everything about him is creepy. I also couldn’t shake the thought that as Sora was fighting with him, her friends saw the whole thing. Digimon’s never been a show for processing but I do maybe wish they’d done a little more here. Taichi & Yamato should have been angrier and I feel like this was the second time when something majorly traumatic happened to Sora and we just assume she doesn’t need to process it. Not that there’s... really time. I don’t really know what I’m asking for here but I don’t think many of us expected that sorta scene, so.
On the flip side, a lot of folks have really valid criticisms of this scene. There was no warning for it and I’m so sorry that so many people had to sit thought it unexpectedly. I think those that watched it first could have put out some sort of warning while still being spoiler free, and I’m gonna personally keep that in mind for the future movies because not-Gennai continues to be creepy af. I don’t really have anything valuable to add to the Gennai discussion beyond this, so this is where I’ll leave it. I just hope we all know that it is 100% ok and normal to wish this scene wasn’t in the movie and it has nothing to do with not accepting that Tri is for adults.
On the plot overall: I feel like I’m being pulled in twenty different directions and I don’t know how Tri could possible wrap this all up with a nice, nostalgic bow. I wonder if they’re planning on some sort of Tri 02 which... wow. That would be incredible, wouldn’t it? But my hopes are not high, they actually don’t exist at all, so... moving on. Er, I made a post about it, but wtf are those planetary objects that are floating around? Why did they show up after the battle between Alphamon and Omegamon? Is it representative of the infection? Of that strange, inter-dimensional world? Was it just an addition to the animation? If not, why are they still present during the evolution scenes in the fourth movie? They’re all over the place. I personally think the digimon are still infected and that the true reboot hasn’t really happened yet. I think a true reboot will come when Meicrackmon causes enough damage to get Yggdrasil’s attention and reset the entire world. I think that reset already happened in the very beginning scene. It reminded me of “the end of the world” event from Norse mythology. I think it will happen again and I think we’re in the specific “pre-apocalyptic” period that’s mentioned. Maki obviously believes the reboot already happened but I think she got played. I don’t think the digimon needed to lose their memories, I don’t think the kids needed to go to the digital world... I just think that different actors were trying to make Meicrackmon well... crack. It happened, but it could have happened in a number of different ways.
I’m noticing an “X” theme and I can’t help but think about the x-antibody. There’s always this focus on Meicoomon’s eyes. I don’t know much about the x-antibody or Yggdrasil’s reset in previous seasons/games, but I would love to talk to someone who does? The first time Meicoomon changes modes (not evolving), we see that DNA-X appear on Meiko’s digivice. I wonder if it’s symbolic of the X factor altering her partner? To me, this helps me rationalize why Alphamon’s involved. Additionally, to me, the orb that appeared on Maki’s digivice sort of looks like Yggdrasil’s orb form...?
Random note, here, but there’s also a lot of talk of falling into darkness, or hands plunging into darkness. I thought it was interested that Meiko (who also didn’t deny that Meicoomon was “bad”) says “I thought you were finally out of my hands, but...”
I also like Meicoomon’s nickname of “The Libra”. So Meicoomon’s meant to act as some scale, and not-Gennai wants her to tip into chaos due to Yggdrasil’s will? Why was Meicoomon “never meant to be born”? Why can Meicrackmon evolve into Ophanimon and Mastemon (literally a balance of darkness and light, normally angewomon and ladydevimon jogressed) in one of the games? Is Meicoomon meant to be a scale on her own or is there someone else keeping the balance? Why did a Tri writer say that Meiko felt the need to alter her behavior after she noticed Meicoomon acting strangely? Why did they say Meicrackmon’s “physical appearance” is important? Why is her digiegg being similar to Tailmon’s important (especially when Hikari’s trait is light)??? Plotmon is known (sometimes?) as a digimon that was created by human researchers. I totally believe that Meicoomon was created. Perhaps by Meiko’s dad? I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS. WHERE ARE THE 2′s IN THE DIGITAL CODE. WHY WAS IT PURPOSEFUL FOR ONLY PALMON AND GOMAMON AND LEOMON TO BREAK THROUGH INTO THE WEIRD INTER-DIMENSION? WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE NAME ‘TRI’ BESIDES INDICATING THE THIRD SEASON? Yggdrasil has three roots that carry it’s worlds, right? Three “norns” that cater to it? For some reason this makes me think of everyone else jogress digivolving. I don’t know why don’t look at me this is unfounded and I shouldn’t be posting it. In like, every Tri interview though there’s at least one person telling us to watch the evolution sequences carefully, so I feel like that holds the key to something.
Anyways, I’m so deep into Norse mythology and I need to stop so those are some of my under-developed thoughts. I don’t know much outside of Adventure seasons, so.
Random Points: 1. I still can’t get over the art. There’s so much thought put into some of these scenes. I also LOVE the tri version of keep on. oh my god. 2. I like the parallel of insults Piyomon was throwing at Sora. “You’re weak” “You’re only human” and then the insults of Meiko that Sora jumped in on “she’s just a normal girl” and then how not-Gennai taunted Sora “without this you’re just a normal kid.” There’s so much under the surface here which is Sora in a nutshell.  3. We were brought through that strange inter-dimension before we see the kids in the digital world. It’s when the Tri logo is on the screen and the background is dark. You see those strange planetary objects floating around. Are we even in the digital world we know? I’m reminded of the way Taichi says “I encountered you” in the first PV.  4. Still convinced that if the reboot happened Plotmon shouldn’t have Hikari’s whistle. Isn’t Hikari holding the whistle string in her poster? We also heard the whistle at the end of the first PV. I hope they use it to call Ophanimon FM back to reality or something.  5. Hikari is the only one who seemingly is okay with the reboot. Plotmon has none of her bad memories. Still though, something is off. If the kids figure out how to reverse everything I think Hikari will try to stop them. 6. I liked that when Taichi + Yamato were failing miserably at cheering Sora up, Yamato would also twist his head to glare at Taichi when they made it worse. It’s like he always assumes Taichi’s a fool ahaha. 7. I’m also laughing because what if, ok what if... going back and looking at my linked post above, there’s an interview with the Tri crew and they talk about how Omegamon splits apart too early due to Taichi’s emotions. Yamato calls him out on this. The interview asks us how that will affect things now. I remember reading somewhere that a digimon’s digicore can be altered if jogress evolution is interrupted, or something like that. I cackle every time I think about all of this somehow being Taichi + Yamato’s fault. It obviously isn’t but just... what if they made it worse ahah. Get wrecked, Yamato. Anyways, digicores coming into play here would have many implications. Everyone’s last little bit of data would remain, right? I don’t know anything about digicores so I’ll leave it at that.
Ok, I think that’s mostly everything! Wow this is a novel and a half, so if anyone’s still reading this... than..k.s? I want to add screenshots so I’m at work so maybe later. I may add more thoughts too. All subject to change, but I wanna keep it all here so I’m not spamming everyone with smaller, more frequent posts.

Clans of Hoshido: Amachi (天知)
In a old time of war and strife, a red haired youth was fiercely plucking the leaves of hollyhock. Her elders refused her voluntary offer to join the fight on the basis of her age and station. By stroke of luck, or perhaps divine intervention, a wandering Dion finds her mulling over her plan to fight anyways. Admiring her determination and spirit, the son of Valla rewards her with an obedient, winged horse that was until then not yet tamed. The youth accepted this gift, and rode her new mount into battle, securing a victory for her people. Those who witnessed her riding the flying beast sought to emulate her, leading to the mass domestication of the pegasi. This woman would later on decide the legacy of the Amachi clan as the first flying combatants in the east.
Through air superiority, the Amachi rose to power as a force to be reckoned with. Initially, they rivalled the Yamato in a age old fight for conquest of the east lands. Eventually, they realized their stalemate was unproductive and agreed to ally with each other to unify Hoshido. From then on, the Amachi recognized the Yamato as the leader of their growing alliance and deferred to them as their king after they staked claim on the surviving daughter of Dion. Together with the other clans, the Amachi officially united under the Yamato clan and contributed to the Council of Five by serving as the head. Despite their more peaceful endings, the clan refuse to lose their fighting spirit, and organized the Sky Knight Corps and regularly host tournaments in their domain.
Today, the the Amachi valiantly guard the chasm that divides them from the west lands, and operate as the first line of defense. Much of the renowned Sky Knight Corps still comprise of Amachi clan members. Their influence knows no bounds second to the Yamato, as they are still the head of the Council of Five. They elected strongly for enforcing border restrictions between the east and west, since the Nohrian smuggling ring had affected them the most.
Basically, the family that has absolutely no chill. Now, we know where the Hoshido royal family get part of their personality from.
Crest Design
So the Amachi crest is probably the most extravagant out of everyone’s (except maybe Izumo and Mokushu, but they’re not part of Hoshido). Anyways, the leaves and flowers are hollyhock (aoi). You might recognize these from more famous clans like the Matsudaira clan, from which the Tokugawa shogunate came from. but I chose something that’s split in half so they kinda look like wings. They’re also called heartvines, which make some sense because these guys have such big hearts... and voices.
Notable Members
Hisashi - the current head of the Amachi clan, Ikona’s baby brother, and leader of the Sky Knight Corps, has an incurable case of caring too much
Yumiko (nee Maeda) - Hisashi’s wife and a Kinshi Knight who’s worked with Reina in their early days, proving her unending patience
Hisashi’s twin daughters. They’re still really young children, and they really look up to their mommy and daddy a lot
Ikona - the late Queen of Hoshido and an accomplished Falcon Knight, a ball of nerves with strange taste in food
Chouko - Hisashi and Ikona’s cousin, a few times removed, and Tsubaki’s mother, a retired Kinshi Knight and now raises her four children
Tsubaki - Sakura’s retainer, and Chouko’s youngest son, a highly talented individual who aims to emulate the rest of his family
The Hoshidan royal famly (Ryoma, Hinoka, Takumi, and Sakura)
I won’t list too many members, since I’m a little lazy, and these are really all you need to know about them.
More Notes and Facts
The made up legend about the first sky knight is loosely based off of Trần Quốc Toản, a Vietnamese marquis. The difference is that the sky knight lived to see another day and started a family.
Since the Hoshidan royals are part Amachi, let’s mention them, too
Ikona kept in good touch with her brother even after her marriage
Sumeragi thinks Hisashi shouts way too much (which is hilarious considering who he is), but since he’s Ikona’s younger brother, he treats him like an annoying younger brother
Everyone in the family loves mochi of all kinds
If you sign up to be a cook for the clan, you are required to be good at making mochi
The Amachi make it a personal holiday to make mochi themselves, even though they are nobles
Hisashi and Ikona get really intense when it comes to mashing the rice with a mallet
Ikona’s odd taste in food often leads her to make mochi of the strangest flavors. Only Mikoto seems to like her taste, much to everyone else’s horror.
Hisashi often invites his sister’s children (the royal family) and some of his subordinates to join in in the “fun” part of mashing the mochi
If he invites you to join in the mashing, it means he trusts you (good luck Arisa!).
Sakura especially like these events, and is proud of the fact that she is good at applying water to the mochi while her uncle mashes it, only that she doesn’t enjoy her uncle’s maniacal shouting when he’s fired up
Hinoka has the fastest hands in the royal family and is probably the only one who can keep up with Hisashi nowadays (before him, Ikona and Fuuma were the best)
Takumi prefers holding the mallet,  because no way is he going to risk breaking his fingers
Ryoma doesn’t mind helping himself, but he doesn’t exactly enjoy the stickiness
Since mochi is used for some rituals, the Amachi often volunteer to help out with the preparations
Hisashi can may be stuck up for constantly insisting he’s right, but he’s gotten better at waiting to hear everyone’s opinion now that he’s on the council for a few years
Hisashi has twin daughters whom he loves very much, but they’re still really young, so he’s determined not to die young
Did he mention that he has twin daughters? Because he will not stop unless you know that he does.
Should he die (on the Nohr route), he thinks first of Yumiko and his kids, because yeah, I guess we should pull heartstrings
With people like Tsubaki, Chouko, and Hisashi, the Amachi are sometimes seen as complete dicks
But no one really complains much, because they do their jobs well and they’re always so generous to the people they govern over
Except for the fact that they have little tolerance for their Nohrian immigrants
They are all complete perfectionists, for better or for worse. It can be a disadvantage to them.
Sometimes their decisions are seen as advantageous to their country and their people, but could do the opposite for the nation’s neighbors, which they have acknowledged that they must remain isolated from
That’s right, red hair is the norm in this clan. This family loves the color red more than the Albrands
They aren’t a bloodthirsty type, however.
While kamon don’t have set colors, the Amachi and Yamato have each other’s colors, but inverted
The standard Hoshido white on red is a testament to how much influence the Amachi have on Hoshido as a whole
The theme attached is Witness to History from the Dynasty Warriors 8 Soundtrack.

Ep 38 is another good one! We are on a roll. I have some thoughts on why and whether I could still end up whining in future episodes again... but for now let’s just enjoy the moment.
We are finally catching up with Yamato (and Jou) who has the sort of episode you’d expect from the brooding lone wolf of the group. I wish they’d pushed it just a liiiittle further than they did and I’ll tell you why below. Still, the point is we learned some things we needed to about Yamato, and with some higher than usual stakes (for a side plot) than usual.
Pic of the day, though, is all about his highness, our lord and savior, JOOOOOOOOO.
Tumblr media
You will bow before him, peasant!
More below.
Like I said, the stakes are a bit high this week:
Tumblr media
Right off the bat, Gabumon’s been beaten, captured, and tied to a cross...
Tumblr media
... where Mephismon (this guy) is apparently planning to kill him in ritual sacrifice.
In other words, this episode is: Yamato and Gabumon Go To Digimon Hell
:P
I mean... Mephismon even looks scary. Very Satanic. Gives me chill, lol. Probably not as scary for kids who didn’t grow up being hit over the head with a Bible every day by evangelicals, though. Sometimes I look back on my childhood and just think “wtf?”
That being said, Mephismon is the sort of lackey you’d expect Millenniumon to have, much more in the vein of Devimon or DarkKnightmon. Aka, pretty darn scary. I was so frustrated for so long by all the small fry Digimon Taichi “struggled” with by himself for no apparent reason - they felt like filler episodes, tbh - filler for a show that has no reason to have filler!
And I STILL do NOT understand why we got WarGreymon’s evolution over a totally forgettable nobody Digimon, but these recent episodes with Koushirou, Mimi, and Yamato have all been serious crises where the characters put everything on the line, and yet nobody evolves. It’s not that I think they HAD to evolve here - I can see they’re leading up to it and since that guarantees more focus on them in the future, I’m totally down for that. What I don’t understand is why Taichi DIDN’T get that. Why play WarGreymon so early? The episode itself did involve Taichi challenging himself, but it all felt so setup. And so unmemorable that it’s just hard to care.
Anyway... I’m ranting about things that didn’t happen in this episode. Rant over xD Back to Yamato.
Tumblr media
His desperate play to rescue Gabumon by himself goes as well as you’d expect.
Yamato: I’m too cool for this shit
Tumblr media
He is chased by those gas mask-wearing Digimon whose name I forget. But they are conveniently blown back by the gush of a timely geyser. Geyser, you say? That means hot springs must be nearby. If hot springs are nearby...
Tumblr media
Jou: Now I know what it feels like to be Team Rocket!
Jou falls out of the sky and right into Yamato’s path. Dressed in nothig but a towel, he looks to Yamato like a scrawny, nerdy, guardian angel.
Tumblr media
Yamato: You’ve gotta help me, Clarence. Fly me to the top of the mountain.
Jou: I can’t, I haven’t got my wings.
Yamato: Yeah, you’re about what I’d expect my guardian angel to be like...
So, Jou immediately starts to chatter at Yamato, and it looked to me like Yamato might be getting annoyed. If this were 99 Adventure, he’d had snapped and said something like, “Can’t you see Gabumon’s gone? Aren’t you even going to ask about that or do you only think about yourself?”
But this is 2020 Yamato, and 2020 Digimon Adventure, where the kids are all Very Nice and don’t have much in the way of flaws. That’s my number one complaint about this show so far. So Yamato just waits for the moment where Jou needs to take a breath to break and ask for his help rescuing Gabumon.
(Gomamon reminds Jou to get dressed first, thankfully.)
Tumblr media
Up on the mountain peak, Mephismon sacrifices the Data of poor blue!Elecmon to the fragment of Millenniumon he is guarding.
Tumblr media
At first I was like, why do Yamato and Jou know about these crystals?? But then they’re like, we heard from Taichi over the digivice. Ah, of course. I kind of miss the old digivices that pre-date smartphones :P
Tumblr media
Yamato explains how they ended up in this situation, and I REALLY like this. They came across Mephismon sacrificing innocent Digimon on their journey to reunite with the rest of the team, and it was Gabumon who insisted they had to stay and save them. Gabumon!
So this is not the first time we’ve seen the Digimon partners take initiative this season. The lack of personal flaws and personality clashes are my least favorite part of the reboot, but the increased agency of the Digimon themselves is probably my favorite. When DanDevimon swallowed Taichi, it was Agumon’s pain that caused his warp evolution. Not saying Taichi had nothing to do with it, but the focus was certainly way more on how losing his partner sent Agumon over the edge. Now we’ve got Yamato actually arguing with Yamato because he feels so passionate about rescuing the captured Digimon.
Yamato’s not heartless, of course - he just prioritizes the people closest to him first. And I have no idea if we’ll see much more of this sort of willpower from Gabumon - it’s partly there for convenience, since no one else is around. (Last time, it was Sora who wanted to help others at their own risk and Yamato clashed with her over the same thing.) The other reason is, this is the episode where we find out how Yamato and Gabumon became friends - which is especially important for the guy who gets the Crest of Friendship - so they needed something a bit more meaty than “the proof of our friendship is I follow you wherever you go and do whatever you want.”
But I love it because it really makes them feel like partners.
Tumblr media
Of course, Yamato can’t say no in the end, so he and Gabumon go to save the Digimon. But they’re overwhelmed.
Tumblr media
The vision of his partner’s bony ass shrinking into the distance as bullets fly overhead will haunt his dreams always ;^;
Tumblr media
Yamato: Once a psychic read my palm and said I have an unusually short life line. I guess she was right. But she also said I’d marry Emma Stone and have eight children.
Jou: are you sure she wasn’t just playing a game of MASH?
Tumblr media
While Yamato and Jou plan their strategy, we switch back to the rest of the team, where the girls are having tea time.
I know I complain about this every time but WHO DA HECK decided Sora and Mimi should wear the same color scheme look what you did now they both blend into the couch
Tumblr media
The boys talk a bit of shop, then Takeru reveals that he and Yamato don’t live together because their parents fight and don’t get to see each other because they both work so much. He doesn’t really come out and say “they’re divorced” but he says he and his brother are separated. Even though Yamato calls Takeru to talk a lot, Takeru still feels sad that there are things he misses since they live so far apart.
Tumblr media
Taichi assures Takeru that Yamato will be fine, pointing out that Yamato had already been adventuring in the digital world for an unknown amount of time before Taichi’s group ever got there. Wow, haven’t referenced that in literally ages. I’m glad these things are finally relevant again. Also like how it seems to confirm Taichi still kinda holds special admiration for Yamato. That seemed like the route they were going way back when Yamato joined the group in episode 8, but then it wasn’t touched on till now.
Tumblr media
Then we get the long-awaited Yamato & Gabumon origin story! Yamato appears to have arrived in the digital world in a similar way that Taichi did. He looks the same, so probably it wasn’t a huge time difference (in human world time anyway).
Tumblr media
At first, Yamato’s like, “leave me alone. I don’t have any interest in the digital world. Where’s the exit?” And Tsunomon says, “Fine, then I will just protect you whether you want me to or not.”
Tumblr media
Yamato: Reeeeeally wishing Ikkakumon could fly, lol
Tumblr media
Yamato recalls how, despite his chilly behavior, Tsunomon still jumped to his rescue.
Tumblr media
(The rescue involved Ikkakumon shooting torpedoes up the mountainside so Yamato can grab them and climb to the top. What I don’t get is why this didn’t draw Mephismon’s attention :P I guess he figured his gas mask lackeys would handle it but uh.)
Tumblr media
Past!Yamato rescues Tsunomon, who is so touched that he is able to evolve. Yamato makes an attempt to remain aloof...
Tumblr media
... but in the end he turns into Taichi :P
So that’s the origin story! It’s more or less what I figured. Kind of surprised we didn’t get any scenes of them in the digital world proper, since I got the impression Yamato was familiar with that world as well as this plane that seems to be a sort of interface between worlds. But maybe not, who knows.
What they try to do here is set up that Yamato is an aloof type who tries to avoid relationships. But he snaps out of it and warms up to people so fast that it’s hard to really appreciate it. Plus he doesn’t really do much to push them away other than say “leave me alone.” Eh.
Tumblr media
Lol it’s funny because he’s strapped to the cross but because his leg fur hangs like that, from behind it looks like he’s just standing there....
Tumblr media
Mephismon starts to sacrifice Gabumon!
Tumblr media
A power blast of dark energy starts to pulse from the mountain, sending everyone to their knees. Jou thinks fast and hides inside his bag. Nylon is good at blocking out satanic chanting after all.
Tumblr media
His eyes fall on... his textbooks! Social studies, chemistry, the periodic table, Japanese history memorization textbook... these useless books! Could they actually be useful?!?!?!
no.
no they couldn’t
Tumblr media
Yamato: Ahh! That’s it, I have got to start lifting more.
Tumblr media
But wait - Jou gets an idea. There’s something that calms him when he’s stressed and that’s... chanting passages from his rote memorization technique books x’D So he sits down and... it’s basically a throw back to the Bakemon episode in 99. I believe he’s chanting things from the Japanese history book, but as I’ve never been a Japanese kid, I’d have to do more research than I want to to figure out for sure.
Tumblr media
He then switches to chanting the numerals of pi! He has pi memorized! x’D I don’t know why that should surprise me. He soon begins to glow with the Zen energy of a cram school trance.
Tumblr media
Jou: 3.14159265359... 3.14159265359...
Tumblr media
Gas mask Digimon: 3.14159265359.... 3.14159265359...
These bright ripples emanate from Jou, counteracting the evil ripples coming from Mephismon’s mountain. It soon pulls the gas mask Digimon into the trance as well.
Tumblr media
Ikkakumon: ... I have no effing idea what is going in this episode on anymore
Tumblr media
Jou comes out of the trance to discover the gas mask Digimon ARE NOW HIS OBEDIENT SUBJECTS. WHAT.
(see I told you you’d bow)
seriously what just happened! XD is this Jou’s mutant power
or is this something all Japanese children who survive juku can do as a result of spending so much time memorizing shit
Tumblr media
Ikkakumon then is able to shoot a bunch better pathway of torpedoes for Yamato to climb and MEPHISMON STILL DOESN’T NOTICE
Tumblr media
Yamato finally makes it to the peak!
Tumblr media
Mephismon’s like, “nice try, but what were you planning to do now? You left your friend at the bottom of the mountain and I’ve got your partner. And I doubt you’ve memorized all the numerals of pi.”
Tumblr media
He kindly creates an evil burning vortex to increased the hellishness of the landscape. He understands that a Yamato episode needs the proper ambience.
Tumblr media
Gabumon’s about to be sacrificed to Digi-Satan lmao
Tumblr media
Yamato steps into the pentagram and get shocked. But he presses on despite the difficulty (and the hellfire), thinking about how much his partner means to him.
Tumblr media
He drops to his knees while Gabumon begs him to save himself.
Yamato: “You’re my... friend!”
Tumblr media
The power of friendship destroys the pentragram and also frees Gabumon from the cross.
Tumblr media
The Crest of Friendship glows...
Tumblr media
Gabumon is strengthened and becomes... WereGarurumon.
:P
Yeah... seemed like a good time for MetalGarurumon but whatever.
Tumblr media
After a cool but brief fight, Mephismon is defeated.
Tumblr media
He appears frozen? Can Gabumon freeze stuff? Whatev. Anyway he’s frozen and then disintegrates.
Tumblr media
Gabumon is tired but happy. Their bond is now even stronger.
Tumblr media
Cute Takeru on Pegasusmon flies down to his brother at last.
Tumblr media
And the others wave up to them from Komondomon. Aw. So finally the team is back together! ;__; Please let it last this time, please please please....
Kay so, overall... I liked this episode. The whole “You’re my friend!” bit would have been stronger if we’d seen more of Yamato resisting that though. I don’t really know why but the reboot seems to pull its punches a lot. I really wish they’d let the kids be mean to each other like 99 Adventure did sometimes. Being mean doesn’t mean you’re a bad person and a terrible influence on children watching your show. It just means you are human and your viewers can learn from watching your mistakes and seeing your growth. Try to understand that, showrunners :P
A missed opportunity in this episode: Yamato and Jou. I was excited that they were gonna be together because they often clashed in 99. And in the reboot as well, it was established that Yamato is annoyed by Jou, although he’s much more polite and hadn’t said anything about it till now (just stayed away from wherever Jou was until he fell asleep lol). So I thought, in this ep, we’d see them butt heads and learn to work together, something like that. But aside from the very first moment where Yamato might look a teensy bit annoyed, they just get alone fine. Idk. Not interesting.
In the end, though, the ep was clearly meant to be Yamato only and Jou was just there as a matter of convenience so the whole group would be together at the end. Since the team is finally reunited, I hope we do start to see all of them interacting in different ways that show their personalities more. Might not be the same as 99 (or, I should say definitely won’t be, at this point), but just something more than “look how well we all get along.”
Next week...
Tumblr media
Looks to be a light and funny episode. The Burgermon were one of my fav bits of Frontier. But I’m a little nervous about this being a Jou epiosde. It’s his turn, I know, but everyone else got something meaningful. Even Mimi - though there was lots of humor in her episode, she was also major league cool the entire time. Maybe that will be the case with Jou here, but I’m not sure because 2020 Jou is a little different - more scatterbrained, more open, more talkative, less serious, less likely to act sullen... he’s quite different, now that I think about it. So I’m actually having difficulty imagining what his personal test will be in this episode. Guess we’ll have to wait and find out. Maybe it won’t even be that kind of episode anyway.
Also, just a guess, but next week is ep 39. So ep 40 maybe will be the start of something big again. It would be good timing: the team’s together and everyone’s had a chance recently for an episode to themselves...
See y’all next week! As usual didn’t check for typos :P

Episode 30, the alleged halfway mark, at last!
I’m fresh out of jokes so let’s hop right into the review!
Tumblr media
Pictured above: Characters who supposedly exist in this series
More under the cut as usual
So last week I listed the things episode 30 needed to do to make me not hate it. They were: 1) Sora had to stay with Taichi and be part of the action, 2) the other characters had to feature here and there to progress their storylines even if the main focus remained on Taichi, and 3) WarGreymon’s appearance needed to be dramatic.
Well... guess who didn’t get Bingo this episode -_____-’
I am... seriously... mind-boggled. This is bizarre. Yes, we all understand that evolutions just aren’t the big deal they were in 99 Adventure, BUT this episode DOES try to convince us that WarGreymon IS a big deal. It just fails at it spectacularly, in my opinion at least. As for the rest: Sora stays with Taichi, but he tells her to take the helpless Digimon to safety and then we don’t see her do anything but stand around waiting for Taichi. Most of the other characters don’t even get a cameo, let alone story progression. Taichi reflects on them briefly at one point but it’s unbelievably stupid. Only Koushirou has anything to do and he is STILL JUST STARING AT HIS COMPUTER.
My expectations for episode 30 weren’t super high, given the current storyline, but I’m honestly slackjawed by how BORING this episode was. They really seem to have decided to rest the entirety of the show on Taichi, and much though I love him, I just don’t think he CAN carry it by himself. Not only has he long been unbelievable as a grade school kid even for shonen anime standards, he doesn’t crack jokes, he doesn’t show personality... all he does is fight. Like, the show isn’t ALWAYS like this - I’ve legit enjoyed it a various times, and I know why - it was always when the team was together and we learned things about them and the fighting was balanced out. So I never know from one week to the next how I’m gonna feel about the new episode. But I do think this is the episode I hate the most to date. :/
Tumblr media
We had a promising start with Garudamon still actively fighting several Megadramon at once, simultaneously barbecuing Sora.
Tumblr media
Fortunately it’s magic so she’s not dead, nor has she fallen to death.
Tumblr media
Taichi and MetalGreymon continue fighting the Allomon on the ground.
Tumblr media
The mysterious Lopmon looks on with a judgmental glare, wondering why he isn’t currently being carried like a baby. Walking is hard, he wants to be carried. Taichi do your job
Tumblr media
Taichi: cmon lopmon you have to learn to do things on your own
Lopmon: no I want to play video games
Taichi: well then I refuse to buy you any more games. if you want them you’ll have to get a job and earn the money
Lopmon: daaaad! youre ruining my life! uggh!
Tumblr media
Koushirou keeps an eye on the misbehaving satellites.
Tumblr media
Taichi and Sora debate what to do. It’s difficult to protect the forest Digimon while fighting at the same time, so Taichi tells Sora to bring them to safety while he fends off their enemies on his own. WHAT THE HELL IS THIS PLAN. Since it’s a shonen anime, I normally wouldn’t whine about this but... it was just last episode that we were shown Taich cannot cope with the combined attack of that many enemies at once on his own. He needed Sora’s help. Why he now thinks he can do it is a mystery.
Tumblr media
Taichi can maybe handle the Allomon and Megadramon on his own, but last episode Tankmon also appeared, and this time, lo and behold, in comes Parrotmon. Sorry Taichi but you brought this on yourself.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile Koushirou communicates with “someone from the Internet” and learns that the satellites are all rerouting to converge on the same location:
Tumblr media
The freaking International Space Station!
Tumblr media
Which will then surely explode! And cause lots of trouble both in space and on earth!
Tumblr media
^Pictured: Koushirou’s “oh shit” face
Tumblr media
^Pictured:MetalGreymon’s “oh shit” face
Tumblr media
MetalGreymon proved to be weak to the lightning Parrotmon emits. If there’s a reason, they don’t explain, but I like the idea that he’s particularly weak to it because he’s a cyborg and the electricity disrupts his... circuits :P Then Parrotmon gets hit with a beam of dark energy and evolves!
Tumblr media
Into Klosmon? Krosmon? IDK, IDC.
Tumblr media
^Pictured: Taichi’s “oh shit” face
Tumblr media
They get their butts handed to them. Taichi and Agumon fall unconscious. Rather than take the chance to deliver the finishing blow, Klosmon or whatever politely waits for them to wake up.
Tumblr media
Taichi’s consciousness is swept into a white empty world...
Tumblr media
where he finds the Crest of Courage looking weirdly sentient... or maybe that’s just me...
Tumblr media
MetalGreymon just looks possessed
Tumblr media
Taichi: Are you alive?
Agumon: Yeah... you okay?
Taichi: Yeah... uhh... well... sort of...
Not being dead = I’m still ok
Tumblr media
So here’s where the episode really loses me... After visiting the blank world, Taichi is suddenly able to recall what happened after Devimon ate him.
Tumblr media
This makes little sense since he seemed pretty KO’d at the time, but okay, find, he woke up long enough to see WarGreymon and now he’s remembering it, sure why not. But I hate that they did this whole “ohh he doesn’t remember!” thing and then solved it like this. Presto! Now he remembers! It’s maaaagic!
Tumblr media
And as ADORABLE as the two of them holding hands like this and resolving to keep fighting is... I just can’t be impressed by a battle with Parrotmon. Or Klosmon or whatever it is now. There’s a reason most shows save dramatic moments and big epiphanies for battles that actually progress the storyline. It makes a much bigger impact. This just feels like someone saying “Woohoo it’s Tuesday!” and then you ask “what’s special about it, is it your birthday or something?” and they say “Nope I just felt like being excited that it’s Tuesday!”
I mean points for optimism and all but it doesn’t make a very good story.
Tumblr media
Taichi helps Agumon walk x’D They are planning to keep fighting even like this.
Tumblr media
And I get that the “never give up!” attitude is essential to the shonen anime protagonist, but when you literally can’t walk by yourself anymore, it’s important to take care of your health is ALSO an important message this show might consider teaching kids once in a while -.-”
Tumblr media
In spite of his unsteady legs, Agumon’s still able to evolve again and powers up to fight Klosmon.
Tumblr media
It uh... doesn’t go well.
Tumblr media
The one cool thing here is the way Taichi sets about attempting to make MetalGreymon evolve. Although we already knew the children play an important role in evolving their partners, Taichi seems to really understand it now, and focuses deeply. It’s a much more active role than we’ve seen before - it seems like more than the usual “encouraging thoughts and emotional ties” spurring the evolution.
Tumblr media
At least he’s still super cute.
Tumblr media
So we have already seen the Crests many times, I knew that... but my theory was that, in order to reach the final evolutionary stage, they would need the help of the physical Crests. So that’s what I thought Mimi was doing with those crystals.
Tumblr media
But Taichi is indeed about to call WarGreymon. So... I have no idea what use Mimi’s gonna find for those crystals x’D I suppose she’ll make herself and Palmon matching necklaces. Or sell them on the black market.
Tumblr media
From her super safe hiding spot, Sora watches in awe, wishing she too were a real character on this show and not just an inconvenience as far as most of the writing staff are concerned
Tumblr media
I love WarGreymon’s shield.
Tumblr media
BAM. He appears. It’s dramatic. But only just.
Tumblr media
WarGreymon defeats Klosmon and explodes the forest... Uhhh, weren’t we supposed to be protecting it?
Tumblr media
Taichi and WarGreymon then join Sora and the forest Digimon and uh... that’s the episode.
Tumblr media
Oh yeah, we get one more hint that Lopmon is more than just some random idiot. Lol. This episode hinted at Lopmon, reminded us that Hikari’s been abducted, and told us that the International Space Station might explode, and then addressed none of those.
The message on the bottom says that the next episode will be on January 10, meaning there will be no episode next week as per usual due to New Year’s holidays.
Next week’s episode:
Tumblr media
Turns out Lopmon is one of the holy Digimon or something. Honestly not a surprise, I mean, it’s Lopmon. Should have occurred to me earlier.
Tumblr media
Also we got what I think is our first named mention of Millenniumon and it looks like Hikari might find out somethig about him. So that’s cool. The rest of the episode seems to stick with Taichi and Sora’s group... The only thing I can say hopefully is that, since WarGreymon’s appeared, MetalGarurumon ought to be not too far off. So that should mean we at least get a Yamato-centric episode in the not too distant future.
Okay, a couple weeks ago I said I had some stuff to say but would wait till episode 30 to do it... so stop here if you don’t want to read me ranting :P It mostly amounts to what I complained about in the beginning: This season is just so hyper-focused on the fights and seems to treat the team aspect as an afterthought. Which makes no sense to me. Honestly, I don’t mind the excessive fighting - that’s common in shonen anime and grown up me can’t expect to be interested in the same stuff that interests 8 year old boys.
I don’t even mind the idea of Taichi’s role as main character getting an upgrade - like, in 99, he was the main character, but it was felt a lot less. Better balanced with the others’ roles, I mean. I think it’s totally okay to make Taichi a more central character and the plot focus in the new season - it wouldn’t be my choice, of course, but that doesn’t mean it’s inherently bad. But the way they’re going about it just doesn’t make sense to me. Even Taichi isn’t interesting half the time. He just fights.
Like I said before, this isn’t the way the show always is. There have been some highlights. I truly loved a few episodes, and the show does seem to have fallen into a pattern of being good for a while and then degrading into something like today’s episode. I don’t know why: budget? pandemic? or is this really, legitimately, what the show producers want to show kids? I guess, in the end, this show really may be about selling toys and selling toys only. (But, if that’s the case, I’m even more surprised that they don’t make a bigger deal about all the evolutions...)
A lot of things I liked the most happened in the very beginning - the first three episodes in particular. The characters interacted with each other. Their feelings and actions influenced each other. Fighting happened, a lot, but it wasn’t the only thing happening. I was pretty excited then. I didn’t expect to love this show like I love 99 - that’s just not possible, I’m too old and 99 is too special to me for me to trust my judgment - I was just happy to see the Adventure kids back and entertaining a new generation.
But since then it’s been a roller coaster with few highs and a lot of lows. Although it’s hard to imagine how the pandemic would have changed the storyline, episode 4 was where they paused the show for Japan’s lockdown-but-not-really, and once they picked back up the tone just seemed kind of different from the first three episodes. Not right away - I think the intro episodes for the rest of the team were pretty reminiscent of “Digimon Adventure” - but that makes sense, they had 4 ready to go and probably had made headway on the next few episodes before they closed down the studio. Anyway, that’s just a guess, since it seems like everything’s been affected by the pandemic, but with a few exceptions we have all been back to work more or less normally since June...
The thing is, there are lots of fighting shonen anime - tons of protagonists who never give up and never fall in spite of how hurt they get, and who get unlimited “evolutions” in return for their tenacity. That’s all fine. It’s the genre. But the thing is...! The thing is, those other shows, they all tend to have humor, to care at least marginally about character relationships, and understand that that’s how you build up a main character: just winning fights alone doesn’t cut it. So I just don’t know what to make of this new Adventure show. It’s FINE when the team is together. We get cool character moments and insights and even some joking around. But they KEEP SEPARATING THEM. This time they didn’t even have more than a single episode together before they were all split up again! I wonder if it’s because they’re having trouble getting all the voice actors in due to pandemic-related issues and budget issues etc. If so, HUGE bummer. Of all the years for Digimon Adventure to get a reboot... why did it have to be this miserable excuse for a year...
Le sigh.
But there’s nothing we can do about it. I’m just going to like what I like and hope for the best in the future. I really would love for the new Adventure to be popular with kids and keep that cast going. I don’t expect it to compete with the lids of Kinmetsu no Yaiba or anything. I just hope that, when we hit the final episode, we look back and say that the season was overall worth the reboot. I hate the thought of looking back and saying “well, that sure was dull.” It’s just an insult. 99 Adventure wasn’t the most unique storyline in the world, but it had a lot of uniqueness IN it, and what made it special was its treatment of the team and the child-partner relationships. The reboot doesn’t need to be exactly the same, but it shouldn’t be forgettable.
That’s why us being at the 30 episode mark concerns me. At this point we know how the show is paced and what’s it like. We can’t really argue that we just don’t know enough to make a judgmenet yet. It’s hard to believe things will suddenly change. If they do, assuming the change is for the better, I’ll be thrilled, but I’ll also feel sad that we missed out on so many chances for cool things to happen in the first half.

Alright alright alright digimon adventure: episode 21, go!!! Last week I was interested to see if the pretty vague ep 21 preview was gonna be a mostly dull fight type filler ep or if the reason for the vagueness was there was too much plotty stuff going on for them to reveal. It’s the latter, I’m happy to say!
It was really cool!! There was a lot of good stuff so YAY! Anything I write here will be a spoiler but let’s just say that T is a very important letter in the alphabet! multiple Ts, in fact!!
Cap of the day: my boy being AWESOME
Tumblr media
Let’s get to it! under the cut as usual
Now last week’s episode was A LOT. We rescued Takeru who no one even knew needed rescuing, gained and then immediately lost the Holy Digimon, got him back in the form of a digi-egg, and then immediately lost THAT too. Honestly I get why it’s Chosen Children and not Chosen Adults - adults would be like “are you KIDDING me all this work with NO PAYOFF I am gonna SUE”
Tumblr media
Patamon’s digi-egg has been abducted by this guy... Skullnightmon? It seems he was a Xros Wars character. I had to look him up because at first I tried “Scarlnightmon” because Idk I was thinking Scarlet Night??? like night of blood and death??? idk. and Google tried to autocorrect it to “Scranton.” Uh... yeah. Skullnightmon makes more sense because of the BIG ASS SKULL on his breasplate. -.-;
It occurs to me how little I know about any Digimon series other than Adventure X’D I mean, I’m not gonna do anything to change that, but.... yeah I’m gonna continue to mix up stuff like this. His loyal steed is Darkmaildramon.
Tumblr media
Yamato, of course, is immediately like Protective Mode On.
So at first I was a bit worried that this ep was gonna just Move Things Along as usual and Yamato wasn’t going to react to his little bro randomly being in the digital world. Let alone in the clutches of pure evil up until just recently. When you’re caught up in battle it’s admittedly hard to find time to Talk about stuff but COME ON
Tumblr media
Fortunately, thought we don’t get a lot of Talking, we do get a bit. Like this cute moment where Takeru tries to explain what happened and Yamato’s just like “We can talk later” and gives him this adorable head pat. Ok, fine. I can live with that. It’s better than nothing xP
Tumblr media
They arrive at the creepy castle which Taichi recognizes as the place Ogremon directed them to. It looks very evil and in front of it is a giant equally evil moat.
They also find this sinkhole sort of thing which Takeru promptly rushes over to stand at the very edge.
Tumblr media
Yamato: OMG kid I look away for ONE SECOND
Tumblr media
le gasp! Takeru finds a shiny feather at the edge of the hole! It’s a sign of the holy digimon! We should go investigate!
Tumblr media
Oops first we have to find this gross Garurumon knock off... Its name is Splashmon but I think it should be “MeltedCrayonGarurumon”
Splashmon is apparently also from Xros wars and can turn into liquid and take on the form of other Digimon... I don’t know if he’s always this shit at it though. Maybe being controlled by evil is the reason for all the meltyness because he looks pretty cool in his wikia:
Tumblr media
rofl...
Tumblr media
Splashmon showers them all with acid rain and Yamato protec baby bro :< *wibble*
Tumblr media
He then carries him to safety like this. xP
Yamato: Takeru, hide!
Tumblr media
Takeru: This bottomless pit that reeks of evil seems like an ideal hiding spot. Niichan will be so proud
No but seriously... looks like we don’t get cowardly, crybaby Takeru this season. The kids getting to y’know Be Human about stuff is a thing it looks like I’m going to continue to miss in this reboot. But on the other hand, I genuinely DO enjoy Takeru throwing his all into saving Angemon.
Tumblr media
Skullnightmon sticks Angemon’s digi-egg here where it gets chained down by evil vines. Very evil. Also seems like overkill, I mean, it’s an egg, what’s it going to do, roll off the platform?
We then switch gears and rejoin the kids in the real world, where Koushirou has, apparently overnight, if not in the last five minutes, created an update for their digivices which enables them to always be in contact with their partner. I don’t really get the details but that appears to be the size of it. We also catch up with Mimi and Jou.
Tumblr media
At first I thought this was a school, but no, IT’S MIMI’S HOUSE. She has a PERSONAL CHAUFFEUR. Like, 99 Adventure Mimi was well-off, that was especially clear in 02... but... WOWZA.
Tumblr media
Mimi’s parents look as stupid as ever xD I love them. They’re joined by her grandpa. After having been gone for three days with no explanation, Mimi’s parents are just like “Don’t you want to take it easy at home today?” when she says she needs to go out. Mimi’s just like “I gotta do what I gotta do!” (ok she actually quotes her grandpa from back in her intro ep but) and leaves like nothing happened.
Tumblr media
.... I think grandpa might be dead. He doesn’t move the whole scene. Doesn’t even change his expression. I guess his mouth is a bit more open but that could just be because rigor mortis hasn’t quite set in
Tumblr media
Meanwhile in Jou’s (normal, average) apartment, we meet SHIN-NIISAN!!! He’s as much of a dick as ever. I love him. Jou’s parents were mad because 1) he was gone for three days, 2) he skipped cram school, 3) he lost his textbook. I think Shin’s basically like HECK yeah finally my little bro shows his cool side! So he decides to be an enabler. GOOD, seems like Jou needs someone to be on his side at home ;_;
Tumblr media
Their Digimon partners are traveling in the interwebz like... this... -____-;
They end up tracking Calmaramon, who is indeed Calmaramon.
Tumblr media
I remember from Frontier when Renamon evolved to Calmaramon everyone gave her SO MUCH GRIEF for not being sexy. Wasn’t there like this whole episode devoted to how beautiful Izumi’s evolutions were and then Calmara the Squid Woman shows up and everyone’s like “ewww gross yuck!!” And ok I know she’s evil here too. But guys I JUST THINK SQUID WOMAN IS WICKED AWESOME OKAY. Like that is a LOOK. Versace take notes.
Like can we get some body positivity??? There is NOTHING wrong with being half-squid. Zephyrmon is not better just because she wears lingerie! Bet she can beat everyone at the swim meet. Also tastes yummy fried or raw with soy sauce.
ok I’m done. I’m serious about loving Calmaramon though. I have so many Frontier issues I totally forgot about >_>;
*cough* so yeah Calmaramon and those little green Digimon virus things take control of some boat and Koushirou’s like Uh-Oh Danger Will Robinson. Piyomon tries to attack with Magical Fire and is surprised, for some reason, when it does not do much. They are very much outnumbered and Calmaramon is clearly a much higher level than them so WHY do they think child-level is gonna be enough??
Tumblr media
So this is cool!! Koushirou appears to be learning to read digi-code! He sounds out Calmaramon’s name by himself. We still pretty much have the question of why Taichi could just read digi-code fluently (well, almost? he randomly couldn’t read everything at the fortress if memory serves) and Koushirou has to sound it out... will we get an answer to this or?? Like if it were Takeru or Hikari I’d just assume it’s their Magic Baby powers at work but it was never made clear if just Taichi can read like this or they all can, and now it seems like maybe they all can’t since Koushirou’s trying so hard here...
Tumblr media
Meanwhile Takeru...
99 Yamato would never have taken his eyes off Takeru for so long lmao
though it makes more sense if this season’s Takeru is more independent which he seems to be
Tumblr media
Splashmon turns out to be really tough to beat, because he’s lost his mind and therefore holds nothing back xP He crushes MetalGreymon and WereGarurumon to the ground, infecting them with miasma.
Tumblr media
At this point I was disappointed that Taichi and Yamato were still so clear-headed... like when are you gonna worry about your partner dude?? He gets the Crest of Courage because he’s never felt fear in his life??????
Tumblr media
But then, their next move fails and WereGarurumon de-evolves back to Gabumon, while MetalGreymon is still in Splashmon’s clutches. He proceeds to pretty much make MetalGreymon’s arm wither away...
Tumblr media
And Taichi FINALLY looks worried. ABOUT TIME.
Tumblr media
Takeru has made it to the bottom of the hole, where he is startled to find this giant eye. I would also fall right on my bottom if I suddenly came across a giant eye.
Tumblr media
Giant eye seems interested in Takeru’s digivice, so Takeru politely lets him have a look. BLINGGGGGGG.
Giant Eye: Ow ow ow turn it down!!!
Takeru: Sorry it’s LED!!
Tumblr media
Taichi runs to rescue MetalGreymon in the... most ineffectual way possible... I love him...
Tumblr media
The miasma can even hurt humans, it appears. Even though he’s in pain, Taichi doesn’t give up, and we get to hear Yamato shriek “Taichi!” all scared and adorable-like.
Taichi passionately reminds MetalGreymon about what they’re fighting for and succeeds in motivating him to be less dead.
Tumblr media
Taichi: GIMME A V DOT THE I CURLY C T O R Y VICTORY!! *CLAP CLAP* VICTORY!! *CLAP CLAP*
Tumblr media
Yamato: Incredible... so this is the power of a Pep Talk...
Tumblr media
Taichi’s Pep causes MetalGreymon’s arm to... fall off... but it’s ok because it sprouts a long wiggly band of light uhhhhhh which then turns into a Giant Gun. So all is well. because MetalGreymon didn’t already have enough guns
Tumblr media
MetalGreymon succeeds in defeating Splashmon and we seem some purple crystal sort of thing disappear, my guess is that’s what was controlling him. Agumon falls from midair and Taichi catches him like this.
Tumblr media
They cute. They also need a break. Well, Agumon needs a break, I honestly think Taichi doesn’t even have an Off button...
Tumblr media
Just when you think things can’t get weirder... Giant Eye appears.
Tumblr media
Takeru’s on top of him looking all cool! Till he immediately falls!
Tumblr media
Yamato catches him somewhat more adroitly than Taichi caught Agumon xP
Tumblr media
The eye belongs to ElDradimon!! I love “animals with worlds on their backs” so this is totally up my ally. My first guess about the eye was that it was gonna be one of the digital sovereigns but this is still pretty cool.
Tumblr media
Sooooooo cooooooooool
Tumblr media
Yamato doesn’t even lecture Takeru about going off on his own and not hiding like he was told. SO DIFFERENT CANNOT COMPUTE. But looks how happy Takeru is to be praised by his bro for helping ElDradimon. Awww.
I’ve got to now reevaluate how I think things will go down because I really expected Takeru to be something that drives a wedge between Yamato and Taichi. In the old days, Yamato was super protective but Taichi would let Takeru do whatever and Takeru got a little boy crush on him which fed into Yamato’s inferiority complex. But if Yamato’s not overprotective and Takeru is already capable on his own... New directions are good though. I won’t be sorry if they don’t rehash all that BUT I need it to be replaced with something else. Taichi can’t just always be serious, Yamato can’t just always be cool... I like the reboot but I am still on edge about the character stuff.
Tumblr media
... Yeah so ElDradimon was mega cool and then... he opened up his VACANT head... bahahaha.... bahahahahahahahahahahaha
So what I really liked about this ep was what I saw as parallels drawn between Taichi and Takeru on the theme of “Do anything to help your partner.” Takeru can’t stop looking for Angemon’s egg, that’s why he goes into the hole after finding the feather. He might not know what’s doing but he’s still gonna do it. Taichi knows a bit more and he’s usually so calculating and strategic, but when MetalGreymon looked on the verge of defeat he threw caution to the wind and tried to save him himself. Okay, not the first time we’ve seen this, true, but it did seem to be the running theme of the episode.
I know I didn’t really talk about how apparently the kids can now update their partners with new powers/gadgets?? by believing in them enough... but y’know that just sounds like the sort of thing a kid’s show would do. I almost miss the card game from Tamers... it would be cool to see the kids have to think and strategically choose what they want to equip their partners with. That was part of the enticement of Tamers, where Adventure was more inexplicable magic, Tamers relied more on intent. Taichi is such a strategist (and of course there’s also freaking Koushirou) that it seems a waste to not involve the kids in the decision making more.
Next week’s ep preivew was a bit hard to follow but 1) the animation looks better than this week thank heaven and 2) it looks like fun. And we get more bamf Takeru! Woot. Can I still say woot in 2020? I can because of senior citizen privilege right?
