Can we talk about a Pacific Rim AU where Steve hasn’t piloted a jaeger in years and retired from public life since his last drift partner Bucky died on a mission? And then Fury calls him back to the Shatterdome when a new invasion attacks and he meets Tony? And they’re both sad and too gay to function but there are giant robots and aliens and soulmatism? Okay, buckle up:

Steve Rogers was part of the first groups of pilots for the experimental jaeger program headed by Nick Fury, Howard Stark, and Peggy Carter and sponsored by SHIELD. It was a group created to fight the threat of alien invasions that came out of a rift in the ocean floor, monsters called kaiju. Jaegers (giant robots) were built in response to fight these threats.

It was with Steve that they discovered that it takes more than one pilot to successfully run a jaeger, and with two minds joined with the robot, it is significantly more powerful and better controlled. The catch is that the pilots must be completely in sync with one another, or “drift compatible.” By being in the drift together, they have access to each other’s thoughts, memories, intentions, and it takes a lot of trust to drift.

Steve’s co-pilot is Bucky Barnes, his childhood best friend. Together they pilot Captain America, the most advanced jaeger of the fleet at the time. They’re one of the most successful teams, with the highest kaiju kill count. They become national heroes and are often sent out to take care of the most difficult and dangerous missions. 

On one such mission, everything goes horrifically wrong, and Bucky dies in action. Steve is devastated. They were still in the drift when Bucky was ripped out of the cockpit by the kaiju, and the severance of his mind where it connected with Steve’s nearly drove him crazy. It took everything he could to finish the kaiju and survive. After that mission and Bucky’s death, Steve swears he will never pilot another jaeger again, he can’t. He disappears from the public eye and lives a quiet life in the wilderness, until the day Nick Fury comes knocking on his door.

The invasions are coming in quicker succession, he’s told. SHIELD has lost many good pilots, and there are few who can do what Steve and Bucky did. He’s needed again. There’s a war to fight. It takes a lot to convince Steve, but it’s been over ten years, and while he still misses Bucky, maybe Steve can fight for the greater good again. He agrees to meet with Fury in the New York Shatterdome.

There, Steve meets young Tony Stark. He’s the son of the late Howard Stark who had co-founded the jaeger program (Howard and his wife were assassinated by anti-jaeger extremists who think the existence of jaegers invite kaiju invasions). Tony is the head of the Jaeger Advancement Research Venture Institution Syndicate and he’s rebuilding the old jaegers as well creating new ones with better weapons and defense. He created arc reactor technology to pilot new jaegers with more efficient clean energy. He got his hands on Steve’s old rig, Captain America and not only fixed her but made her a new shield with a magnetic return and better recoil as well as an updated AI system Tony built himself.

Tony is intelligent and sarcastic and ridiculous and Steve is painfully reminded of Bucky. Tony takes no shit and doesn’t pull his punches, and he’s sharp as a whip, but he’s also kind and understanding, and his big brown eyes are so sad. Steve can’t help but be drawn into Tony’s orbit but he can’t pay afford to attention to that because he needs to find a new partner and he was told Tony isn’t an option. He’s not a pilot.

Steve runs through a gamut of potential drift partners and none of them work. He’s not drift compatible with any of them. He misses Bucky, and he doesn’t think it’s possible to drift ever again. His mind is too loud to let anyone else in. Fury finds him more candidates. They aren’t compatible either. 

Meanwhile Tony has been on the sidelines taking notes to collect the data. Steve has a sudden idea, and maybe maybe maybe. Why not?  He wants to try with Tony. Tony recoils. He says no. “Apparently I'm volatile, self-obsessed, and don't play well with others.” 

The newest kaiju horde they named the Chitauri are at their doorsteps. Steve still doesn’t have a partner. He’s at a point where he thinks he’s just going to get into Cap by himself. At the last moment, as he’s suiting up for the final test run, Tony comes in and says he can try to see if a drift with Steve would work, but he warns him he’s not the kind of guy to lay down on the wire for others. Steve smiles and doesn’t believe him. 

They’re drift compatible. Their connection is stronger than anything Steve has ever felt and there are a few bumps in the road when they train, they often clash and they fight a lot, but this is it. This is the bond he’s looking for.

When they’re in the drift together, Steve realizes that Tony’s reservations about being a pilot are because his best friend, James Rhodes had been a jaeger pilot, now retired after his injuries. Tony had been in War Machine with Rhodes when the mission had gone horribly wrong and Rhodes was injured, resulting in the loss of the use of his legs. Afterwards, Tony became obsessed with building more powerful jaegers to keep his friends, and the world safe. Tony just wants to build suit of armor around the world.

They end up piloting Captain America together. The battle begins, and they’re part of the front line with Thor and Bruce Banner who copilot Thundering Hulk, and Natasha Romanov and Clint Barton who copilot Widow Archer. They almost all get destroyed in the first wave of the invasion. They survive, but just barely. 

After Steve is knocked unconscious during the initial battle, and they’re surrounded by Chitauri with no way out, Tony ejects Steve from the cockpit in a lifepod and stares down the horde himself. He still has a nuclear payload strapped to Cap but her autopilot function is shot, and there’s only one way to get the payload close enough to have any effect. Tony knows it’s going to be a one way trip but he needs to manually pilot into the portal the Chitauri had opened in the tectonic plates deep in the ocean and detonate it there. 

Somehow, Tony manages to send Captain America into the portal and just barely survives after ejecting in a lifepod at the last moment. The old jaeger is lost, but the mission is successful, and the nuclear detonation in the portal manages to close the wormhole and kill the remaining kaiju. 

On the surface, Steve regains consciousness thinks he’s just lost yet another driftmate and copilot when Tony’s pod bobs up in the water. Steve rips open the door of the pod to find Tony unconscious, and he fears the worst, but Tony wakes after CPR. After Tony says, “please tell me nobody kissed me,” Steve could weep with relief. 

Tony babbles, apologizing that he destroyed Cap, he’s sorry, he’ll rebuild her again, even better this time, but Steve doesn’t care. He’s just so happy Tony is alive, he hauls him in for a kiss, and for the first time in a long time, his mind quiets.

And Tony does rebuild Captain America. He adds rocket launchers, repulsors, and gold to her red, white and blue. Her new call sign is Iron Patriot.

My article for MB is a kind of behind-the-scenes look at the making the Velvet Underground's Loaded, that (hopefully) has some stuff that is fresh and interesting, even for the die-hards. The main interview is with Steve Nelson, who booked the Boston Tea Party back in the VU days and was a close confidante of the band for several years. At long last, Steve's silent black-and-white video footage of the Velvets at the Paramount Theatre showed up in Todd Haynes' recent doc, synched to a studio version of "Candy Says." A kind internet soul has synched it to the actual recording of the Paramount show ... Just about 30 seconds, but every second is priceless.

Soph’s Header + Doodle Tutorial (requested by anonymous)

Hi! I’m back again with the sequel to my icon + colouring tutorial, this time with headers and doodles! 🥰 You will need:

I’m using Photoshop CC 2018 to make these headers and doodles, but you could easily make them with earlier/other versions.

Basic gif making knowledge.

A screencap you want to use, some fun textures, and some time and patience!

I always start off with my headers as size 500 by 281 pixels. It doesn’t really matter necessarily, as long as the size is in line with the tumblr dimensions and fits. I find these sizes work to keep a gif or header small, so you can make it a bit longer without going over the tumblr size limit. I know technically tumblr doesn’t have a size limit any more, but I do still try to stick to the 3 MB limit when I can. This is because sometimes gifs lose their quality if you go over. In my opinion, you can afford to go over a bit, but if you go too far, the quality of the gif gets destroyed, and sometimes for me even on 4 MB they just don't play, so 6 MB or 8 MB doesn’t stand a chance. Not sure if anyone else has run into this problem, but you can read more about what I mean here and here.

Okay, so. Making simple headers is actually pretty easy, it’s just a lot of layering of the right things. Once you have your base size, pick a nice gradient to put on it. For me, I’m going with a light purple to a slightly darker purple:

It’s important that you have video timeline turned on for this. If you are not familiar with frame animation and video timeline, I suggest you take a look at this, since we are going to be using both quite a lot in this tutorial.

Next, you want a nice background texture for your header. You don’t have to, but I think it just gives it a little something extra. You can find some textures here they have A LOT to choose from.

Once you have your texture, make it black and white and set it to soft light (unless the texture is the same colour as your background, then sometimes leaving it in colour can enhance the whole thing). Then you should have something that looks like this:

Now add your cap, coloured + smart sharpened and whatever other adjustments you want to make, on top of these layers. If you don’t know how to do this, please see my icon tutorial, where I explain how to do these steps in depth.

Obviously in this instance, Steve is much larger than if this was an icon. Make the picture proportional to the header size, but it’s up to you how big or small you want that to be! So, you could just save the header like that, if you wanted to. BUT, since we’re going to be adding gifs + doodles, I’ve had to make some special adjustments. As you can see down the right-hand side in the layers tab, I’ve added some purple colour over and under Steve (set to soft light, opacity anywhere between 5-30%, whatever suits you) and also lightened the background A LOT. There is a reason for this, which you wouldn’t need to do if you weren’t going to add gifs (unless you wanted the background to be lighter, of course).

So, for the gifs underneath your cap. Here is a pack of gif overlays that I love and adore, once you have chosen one of those, you want to put it underneath your cap. To do this, open the overlay gif, it will look like this:

And you can just drag it across from one file to another, underneath your cap.

I turned off all the layers above the gif, temporarily, so I could move it into place. Once it’s in your header file, make sure to change the gif to “overlay”, which will then bring back your nice background colour. Setting something to overlay makes everything underneath it look darker, hence why we lightened the background before, as I personally didn’t want it to look too dark for the overall header. (You could also put your cap underneath it if you wanted the gif to go over the person, but you’ll have to do extra editing to make sure the cap isn’t too dark if you do so).

Now you should have something that looks like this:

You want to make sure you end the header where the gif ends, even if your layers are “longer”, as you can see above. Again, this is a perfectly acceptable place to leave your header and save it, but this is where I tend to add the doodles!

Open a new file, I usually make them quite big say 800 by 400 px, as you can scale the doodle down later on, rather than starting small and working in a small space, which makes things unnecessarily difficult. If you would like to add some premade doodles onto your gifs, you can find some here, but I will show you how to make your own below!

You could draw the doodles yourself, probably making your life a lot easier, but if you’re like me and you don’t want to do that (for me it’s because I suck at drawing on ps, LMAO) you can use a picture too. Find a picture of what you want, I usually just google it, so here I’ve got a simple crown:

I used the magic wand tool to cut it out, and now we have this:

Now what you want to do is change the video timeline to frame animation. Click the “creative video timeline” button if video timeline isn’t already displayed, then the three dots in the left-hand corner to convert to frame animation, and you should get something like this:

Now, here’s the long-winded bit. It’s slightly odd and a bit complicated, so if this doesn’t make sense, please feel free to message me and ask further questions.

So, we want the doodle to look like it draws itself, right? What you want to do is crop the image so bits of it are added as the frames go on, thus achieving that effect. The key to this is turning layers on and off on the right-hand side, so only certain parts of the image show themselves one after the other.

Firstly, duplicate Layer 1 and turn the original image off. This is a safety in case we mess something up later and need to revert to the original image. Now, crop out the first part of your picture. I’m going to start on the bottom of the crown and work my way around clockwise. Use the marquee tool (I’m using the elliptical one) to cut out one section of the image, then right click and select ‘layer via cut’.

Then turn off the rest of the layer, so you’re only left with this tiny piece:

Now, add a new frame. On the bottom bar there is a button, next to the bin/trash, that looks like a sheet of paper, which says “duplicate frame” if you click on it. Do that. Now is where the turning off and on part comes in. Each layer on the right-hand side corresponds to a frame on the bottom, and you want to build up what is shown in each frame every time.

This is going to involve a lot of duplicating and merging of layers, because I haven’t found a better way to do it currently.

First you want to turn off all the layers when you have Frame 2 selected. When you’re on Frame 1 your tiny piece (Layer 2) should be turned on (you turn layers on and off on the right-hand side, toggling the little eye icon). Like so:

You want to be working with Frame 2 selected for these next parts. Then you want to duplicate the tiny piece layer (so now we have Layer 2 copy). By turning the Layer 1 copy on briefly, you can cut out the next part of your image, so use the marquee tool again to cut out the next little piece. Make sure you have the layer with the rest of the image selected when you do this, otherwise you could be cropping nothing, since the other layers should still be turned off. Once you’ve done that (once again using layer via cut!) you should now have Layer 3. Move this to the top, turn off Layer 1 copy, and turn on Layer 2 copy, like so:

You may not be able to see in the picture, but the two layers aren’t quite touching. Since it doesn’t matter what the original image looks like for the end result of the doodle, you can move Layer 3 in line with your first piece. DO NOT move the original small layer, Layer 2, as then it will be in a different place on Frame 1 and Frame 2, and you’ll have to try to move it back, and that will be a mess. Always adjust the newest layer in line with the previously existing layers so this doesn’t happen.

When you’ve done that, select both Layer 2 copy and Layer 3 at the same time. I usually use the ctrl key to do this, which I think is command on macs, then when you’ve done that, right click on those layers and select merge layers from the menu that appears. They should now be one layer called Layer 3.

The problem is, when you do this in the second frame, it usually turns itself on in the first frame too, which you don’t want. So click on Frame 1, and make sure to toggle Layer 3 off for Frame 1, and on for Frame 2. And the opposite with Layer 2: make sure it is on for Frame 1, and off for Frame 2, like this:

Now, you want to repeat the process. So, add a new frame at the bottom, so you have three frames. Turn all the layers off when Frame 3 is selected. Duplicate Layer 3. Cut out the next piece from Layer 1 copy, and make sure it aligns with the other layers without moving the previous pieces. Merge Layer 3 copy and Layer 4. Make sure Layer 4 is turned off in Frame 1, because the newest layer WILL turn itself on there every time. Go back to Frame 3, and turn Layer 4 on again.

You should have something that is looking like this:

Can you see how all the different layers are corresponding to the different frames? I don’t mean to be patronising at all, so I hope it doesn’t come across that way. I just know that some people don’t understand how frame animation works, so I’m trying to be as clear as possible.

It doesn’t matter if your doodle is moving away from your original image, because you won’t be seeing the original image when the doodle is done, only the doodle. As long as the layers that correspond to your frames aren’t moved during the process, then don’t worry.

Continue to do this until the whole doodle is made, like so:

I ended up with 15 frames, and 16 layers. You can set this to whatever speed you think is best by highlighting all the Frames. If you click the thee little lines on the right-hand side of the frame animation window, a little menu pops up, and there you can select all frames (or hold shift and click on the first and the last frame). From there, you click on the time underneath the frames and adjust it whatever looks best for your gif, 0.05 usually works well.

Now, you want to convert the doodle into one object that you can move. To do this, click on the little lines in the left-hand corner (where the frame animation dots were before), and all the framers will turn into layers in video timeline. Then, to make them all one object, select all the layers at once on the right-hand side, and go to filter > convert for smart filters.

You should now be able to drag your doodle into your header file! Like so:

As you can see, sometimes the doodle isn’t as long as the loop of your gif, but that’s okay. What you can do is use the marquee tool and right click when you’ve selected the doodle, choosing layer via copy. This will create a still image of your doodle, which you can place after it ends to ensure it stays on the header until your gif is ready to loop again, as you can see here:

As you can see here, I decided to make the crown white, since I felt it fit better with the header’s aesthetic. To do that, I inverted the gif and the still shape, and set them both to lighten. I also added a white stroke of 1px just to make it stand out (double click your layer on th right-hand side, and find stroke in the pop up that appears, adjust to your liking!)

I also added another doodle to mine, using the same process as before. Spelling out ‘king steve’ had a lot more layers and frames, but it was the same process. Then I dragged it over, and copied the layer just before it re-looped so I could have it as a still image for a portion of the gif. You may need to duplicate your overlay gif underneath the cap to ensure eveything has enough time to loop properly, like so:

And that’s it really! If you would like to add a divider on top of your header AKA a header template, these are the ones I use (one, two). To add it, open the file and drag it onto your gif file, then place it where you want it to be. Once you’ve done that, set the layer to screen (here is a tutorial from the op) if you want it to be white, or invert the image (image > adjustments > invert) and then set it to darken if you want it to be black. If you want it to be a different colour, you’ll have to cut out the divider from the background image, and then double click the layer to get the style menu. In layer style, you can select ‘colour overlay’ and make it whatever colour you want!

To save your gif, go to file > export > save for web (legacy). It may take a while, so just let ps do its thing until the bar has loaded. You can preview the gif by clicking preview in the bottom left-hand corner, in case you want to cancel and make some changes to your gif before you save it. These are my settings:

  L'année commence à peine, et déjà, il se pourrait bien qu'il soit minuit moins cinq, à l'horloge du temps… Après l'expérience douloureuse de la crise dite “de 2008 et de 2009” dont toutes les conséquences ne sont pas encore guéries, on avait cru comprendre que ni les milliers de milliards de dollars émis par toutes les banques centrales ni l’augmentation continue de la dette mondiale (publique et privée) ne pouvaient faire merveille pour repousser l’échéance d'un nouveau krach annoncé qui conduirait à l’effondrement de la monnaie et à l’hyperinflation : ces gadgets ne font et ne sont qu'illusions ! Les perspectives restent bien sombres, pour 2020 !

  Il semble de plus en plus que nous nous rapprochions de l’œil du cyclone évoqué dans la sombre prédiction du grand économiste autrichien Ludwig von Mises, qui écrivait : “Il n’y a aucun moyen d’éviter l’effondrement final d’un boom économique dû à l’expansion du crédit. La seule alternative consiste à choisir soit que la crise arrive plus vite, grâce à un abandon volontaire de l’expansion de crédit, soit qu'elle arrive plus tard, ce qui rend inévitable la destruction totale du système monétaire    (in- Les fondements ultimes de la science économique). Pour l’économiste allemand Egon Von Greyerz, “la plupart de nos contemporains ne réalisent pas l’ampleur de l’effondrement qui nous attend”. “Je me demande, écrit-il, si le monde a déjà traversé une époque aussi folle. Les valeurs éthiques et morales ont disparu et la décadence est endémique. Nos dirigeants tentent d'oublier les lois de la nature en manipulant l’économie mondiale dans des proportions jamais vues auparavant”.

  L’ex-Premier ministre britannique Gordon Brown avait aussi prévu que “nous nous dirigeons vers une nouvelle crise, car les gouvernements ne se sont pas attaqué aux causes de la crise de 2008”. Et comme la coopération internationale qui existait en 2008 et 2009 n’est plus possible, avec Trump et le Brexit, ça pourrait être pire. On assisterait plus à la recherche de boucs émissaires que d’une solution,   estime Sony Kapoor, économiste et ancien conseiller de l’Union européenne’’.

  Partout dans le monde, le seuil ’'dangereux” a été dépassé. Par exemple, la Turquie, décidément fidèle à son rôle “d'homme malade de l'Europe” continue d’inquiéter, avec un satrape qui poursuit ses rêves fous autistes, expansionnistes et interventionnistes d'un autre temps : inflation à 17 %, fuite massive des capitaux, effondrement de la lire turque de 40 %, la Bourse (BIST 30) a perdu 20 %, les taux d’intérêt sont à 24 % et les besoins de refinancement à un an (230 milliards de dollars) ne sont pas couverts. Au Venezuela, l’inflation a atteint le taux grotesque de 1.000.000 % par an, tandis qu’en Argentine, le peso continue de s’affaiblir avec une dette libellée à 80 % en dollars et un taux directeur de 60 % de la banque centrale.

  En Arabie saoudite, le prince héritier Mohammed ben Salmane (dit MBS) semble aller droit dans le mur. Après l’introduction en bourse d’Aramco, le Fonds public d’investissement saoudien se lance dans des transactions tape-à-l’œil qui ne feront pas baisser le chômage et ne diversifieront pas son économie mais qui multiplient les projets hors de la portée de ce pays (des investissements dans le tourisme spatial (Virgin Galactic) ou le projet grandiose de 500 milliards de dollars d’une mégapole sur la mer Rouge, ce ‘’NEOM’’ dont nous avons parlé ici, l'an dernièr).

  Ailleurs, par exemple chez les plus grands, les perspectives ne sont pas meilleures : alors que la Bourse de Shanghai a perdu 20 % , la dette publique et privée de la Chine est passée de 1.700 milliards de dollars en 2001 à 25.500 milliards de dollars, après que Trump ait sur-taxé, il y a un an, quelque 200 milliards de produits chinois à 10 % et 25 %, et fait planer une menace sur plus de 250 milliards de dollars  supplémentaires. Quant aux États-Unis, ils investissent peu dans les projets civils d’infrastructures, mais trop dans leurs dépenses militaires (600 milliards de dollars par an, à comparer aux 69 milliards de la Russie et aux 216 milliards de dollars de la Chine). Trump rêve de dévaluer le dollar dans sa guerre commerciale avec la Chine, raison supplémentaire pour laquelle les Russes et les Chinois jouent la carte de l’or comme actif ultime dans leurs banques centrales. La flambée sur le métal jaune a entraîné en ce début d'année des articles sans nuances dans la presse française (ex : le Figaro-éco du 12 janvier 2020), et le risque d'un conflit au sujet de Taïwan reste une hypothèse possible.

  En Allemagne, la Deutsche Bank, qui fut récemment qualifiée de “source majeure de risque” par le FMI, ne représente plus que 21 milliards d’euros en Bourse et a dû se séparer de 7.000 personnes, avec une chute du titre de 34 % depuis le 1er janvier, et la Commerzbank ne vaut plus que 10 milliards d’euros. L’indice sectoriel ’'Euro Stoxx Banks’’ est en chute de 14 % depuis le début de l’année (En France, la BNP perd 12,4 % et la Société générale 12,08 %) : les taux bas (qui pénalisent la rentabilité), la dette italienne et les craintes réelles d’un vrai krach expliquent la méfiance grandissante des investisseurs pour le secteur bancaire.

  JP Morgan (qui ferait mieux de se taire) prétend que la prochaine crise devrait être moins aiguë que la précédente, au moment où Steve Bannon, lui, a confirmé, en septembre dernier en Italie, qu'une nouvelle crise financière était inévitable, précisant même que : “La crise qui vient fera paraître celle de 2008 comme un pique-nique dominical. Ce sera la crise de la dette et de toutes les monnaies”.

  La crise va-t-elle éclater en Chine, au Japon, à Wall Street, en Italie, en Espagne, en Grèce, ailleurs ? Personne ne peut répondre à la question, alors que l’économie mondiale vit dans une ambiance de drôle de guerre ou de Désert des Tartares. Comment ne pas se dire qu'il se pourrait bien qu'il soit “minuit moins cinq’' ?

Can You Merge Tracks?

The Report Merge utility consolidates the contents of a "source" file into a "target" file to create a single, merged file. As a part of the merging process, you select the contact file you want to remain energetic and the other file to be merged and archived. Wild Apricot does not present a mechanism to search for possible duplicate data. Subsequent is go to the editor and spotlight the a part of the song that you simply need to merge then hit the Edit button adopted by Copy. After which transfer to the succeeding monitor, on the boards editor transfer the cursor at the end of the track and press Edit > Paste Repeat this process till all of the mp3 recordsdata that you simply want to merge for you mission is done.

And then there's the price range taxidermy. The name of this match is Fatal 4 Way and this match is between 4 players, all of them are dangerous and there is only 1 winner in all of these, so all of them try to defeat each other and pin fall is only possible when the opponents are not looking to the enemies.

This is a Royal Rumble match and there are total 30 characters in this match, the rule of this match is to throw players outside the ring. If a player fails from getting outside the ring, he gets defeated, the player who stands alone in all 30 players is included as a winner.

Camtasia Recorder[edit]

In Camtasia Recorder, users can start and stop recording with a hotkey combination at any time, at which point the recording can be halted and Camtasia Recorder can render the input that has been captured into a CAMREC format. The CAMREC file can be saved to disk or directly imported into the Camtasia component for editing. Camtasia Recorder allows audio recording while screen-capturing is in progress, so the presenter can capture live narration during a demonstration or presentation. Camtasia also supports dubbing in other audio tracks or voiceover during post-capture editing. Users may also download an add-in for Microsoft Power Point that will allow them to initiate recording of a presentation from within Power Point itself.

In Camtasia editor, multimedia objects of various formats can be imported into the clip library and arrange them in time order and stacked tracks using the timeline form of user controls. Overlays of various types may be added, including user-defined settings, such as when and how to display the cursor and pan-and-zoom effects such as the Ken Burns effect.

Post-production[edit]

After capturing a presentation in the Camtasia Recorder, the Camtasia component can be used to modify audio and video displayed as tracks by using the timeline control and object library interface with an integrated preview window. The image in the infobox to the right is a screen capture of the timeline interface. In addition, Camtasia allows automatic captions (speech-to-text), voice overlay for the presenter or editor, as well as the ability to add sound effects in various formats.

Rendering and deployment[edit]

The Camtasia program allows import of various types of multimedia video and audio files including MP4, MP3, WMV, WMA, AVI, WAV and other formats into the Camtasia proprietary CAMREC format, which is readable by Camtasia. The CAMREC format is a single container for various multimedia objects including video clips, still images, document screen shots and special effect containers. The created video can be exported to common video formats including MPEG-2, MPEG-4, WMV, AVI, and Adobe Flash.

Thread; Chapter 1 - Lost Boy

The following was a commissioned piece for MatthewCaveatZealot. Awakening with a start, Neil managed to bash his head on the ceiling of his dorm room. He collapsed back into his loft bed, running his hands across his temple.  He had always known this was a distinct possibility with his sleeping arrangement; there was barely three feet of clearance between his mattress and the unsettling popcorn-style stucco which always left flakes in his bedding. The only damage appeared to be a mild contusion, and a slightly hurt ego. The boy glanced at the alarm clock, which was inelegantly tucked into a corner of the frame, cord precariously taut.

8:35 AM

“Shit!” Neil cursed.

In his panic, he practically hurled himself over the rail of his loft. Fortunately, his faded blue bean bag chair – presently covered by a week's worth of dirty laundry – broke his fall. Fishing in the bureau just beneath his bed, he managed to dig out a clean pair of jeans and a grey tee.

As he reached for his bookbag, he noticed he'd left his computer on. The dull white of a Lotus document was burning into the monitor. Upon reading the salutation of “Dear Erica” the previous night's phone call came rushing back to him; three years discarded in two minutes.  He had trouble saying what he needed to say in that call. Truthfully, the shock of it had rendered him phased out of reality. There was a hollowness that consumed him upon hearing those words, an emptiness that had to be embraced lest it consume him.  

He couldn't even bring himself to cry.  Tears would only validate the nightmare.  That had to be it:  a nightmare.  One that he would wake up from in a day or two when she called him back and apologized.  When she remembered how happy they had been together and realized what she was giving up. After a few hours, he had passed from denial to bargaining. Every possible scenario played through in his head simultaneously, from magnanimous acceptance of her apology to him banging at her door and pleading to take him back.  That was when the rational approach of writing her a letter presented itself.  

Without bothering to save the document, he flipped the switch. The dull fizzling sound was always a strange comfort.  To Neil, it represented the end of a day.  Maybe that's how he should view Erica: just another chapter in his life that he would move past.  And maybe, like the document itself, there really was nothing worth saving there anyway.

Voxton was once a whistle-stop town just outside of the state capitol.  It was the home of an active farm community, and the state's number one exporter of unemployed drunks looking for better opportunity in “the big city”.  Then somebody decided to build a college there in the wake of the 1973 stock market crash, presumably with hopes of turning the state's fortune around.  

McCain University – presumably named for its founder, though Neil had never bothered to find out – had grown to become something of a Mecca for the technically inclined. If you wanted to break into engineering or computer science, you went to McCain, assuming your parents weren't wealthy or connected enough to ship you off to MIT.  

Thanks to a grant from the Governor, the school had an entire campus building dedicated to the most powerful machines on the market. Perhaps this was why Neil insisted upon using a personal computer from the 80s, despite the fact that his father had offered many times to buy him something newer.  

The IBM 386 was more than a little dated, but the chunky machine could do the important things in his life.  Sure his classes had him learning on top-of-the-line Power Macintosh hardware, but it had been the computer he grew up with.  Its impressive 32 MB memory was stuffed with the text-adventure games of INFOCOM.  While his first love would always be Zork, it was the murder-mystery Moonmist that made him want to become a writer.

These dual interests had conflicted before, and while Neil's father was supportive he was also wary.  Writing, after all, was a hard market to break into.  But computer technology was in high demand and only rising.  When he had embarrassingly tried to connect with his son by saying maybe he could learn to make “some of those Nintendo games”, Neil had politely laughed and agreed to consider it.  The boy's consideration didn't take long.  As a lawyer, his dad always was the better negotiator.  Perhaps it was overkill to mention that it is what his mother would have wanted.

Neil opened the door to his usual morning haunt, a student-run coffee shop called “The Junction”.  The place was barely bigger than his dorm, but they also had the best muffins in Voxton.  He stumbled up to the register and barely sputtered out his order before his bookbag slipped off of his shoulder, sending his notebooks scattering.  

“Damn,” Neil cursed.  “Sorry, Angie.  A blueberry muffin and a coffee to go please!”

“Running late again, Neil?” The senior asked, tying her long ebony hair back with a scrunchy.

“I know, they're lucky to have me as a student,” Neil mumbled bitterly, shoving the papers haphazardly back into his bag.  

“Four bucks. Your dad's Amex, I trust?”  Angie replied, extending her hand.  

“Cash today.  I forgot to grab my wallet, but luckily there was a five in my jeans,” Neil chuckled benignly, handing her the bill.  

“Moving up in the world.”

“Tell me about it.”  

“Lemme grab your breakfast, champ,” Angie smirked.  

Neil took his change and leaned back against the bar.  The place wasn't really all that bad.  Sure two people couldn't walk side-by-side behind the bar, but the little brick shack was alright. He had particularly liked the ironic name.  Before the University reclaimed land for a parking lot the place had been a rail depot. The result were tracks that didn't lead anywhere just behind the restaurant and for few miles north and south respectively.  

“And in offbeat news today,” droned a local news anchor on the 16 inch TV in the corner of the bar. “IBM supercomputer 'Deep Blue' went six games against chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov yesterday. Although Kasparov won the match with four games to Deep Blue's two, this is the first time a computer has ever defeated a world champion under tournament regulations. Truly this is a sign of things to come. Just how more advanced can these computers get?”  

“Neil!” Angie called, snapping her fingers in front of his face.  “Muffin, coffee, late for Computer Theory 221, remember?”  

“Right, sorry!” Neil sputtered, grabbing his food and bolting out the door.

“Mr. Brown. How nice of you to grace us with your presence.”

Professor Barker was generally a nice guy, but Neil had tried his patience one too many times.  Tardiness was just one of Neil's offenses against the would-be silicon valley elite.  In short, Barker didn't like his attitude.  He didn't like that Neil would sit through his classes, mind clearly on other things. But what he hated worse was the fact that Neil continued to ace every assignment in spite of his lackluster classroom performance.  It wasn't Neil's fault that he felt he got very little out of the lecture hall experience, preferring instead to study on his own time.  

“Sorry, sir,” Neil apologized half-heartedly.  “Rough night.”  

“Wait until you become an adult, then you'll learn what a real rough night is,” Barker scolded.  

The aging technician looked like a slightly sunkissed Steve Wozniak.  He had the beard and the plaid collar shirts, but his face was a bit more rugged.  Barker had learned computers while serving in the Army during the 70s.  The synthesis was a computer nerd who looked like he used to beat kids up for their lunch money.  

“Now that Mr. Brown has found his seat,” Barker sighed.  “Let's resume. Where were we now?  Ah, yes! The potential of virtual reality.  Now, this ain't your 'Virtual Boy', we're talking about actual virtual reality.”

Barker was nothing if not fond of the sound of his own voice.  The lecture was more or less him pontificating about the achievements that had been accomplished with the budding technology and his wild-eyed fantasies of future use.  Of particular note, Barker's assertion that we could one day use virtual reality to explore the entire planet's history in first-person seemed especially romantic.  

“Imagine, if you would, you put on a visor and are instantly transported to the wild west.  With a few mouse clicks, you are in the Roman Empire, or watching the building of the Great Pyramid of Giza.”

A loud digitized beep came from the clock just over the door. It was already 11 AM.

“Ah, well, I seem to have rambled on right to the end of class,” Barker chuckled. “Alright, that's a good stopping point anyway.  I'll let you head out.  Mr. Brown, a word.”

The students began to pack up and make their way towards the door, as Neil marched down the steps of the lecture hall, prepared for his weekly chew-out session.  The beard of the middle-aged educator seemed to twitch in anticipation and annoyance.  

“Neil, do you want to be in this class?” Barker asked bluntly.  

“Yes sir,” Neil stoically replied.

“You know the class starts at 8:30 AM every Monday and Wednesday, right?”

“Yep.”

“The winter semester has only just started and in the six classes we've had together you have been on time to one of them.”

“That's correct, sir.”

Barker sighed and waved his hands about in front of him as if he was grasping for something to strike him with.  

“I don't know what you expect from me,” Barker steadied his hands and pointed a finger in Neil's face. “But I know I expect from you. I can't have you barging in after the class starts.  If I have to lock that door, I'll do it.  Your work is good, but if you want to stay in my class I expect you to show up on time.”  

“I understand sir.”

“Well, I hope so,” Barker grumbled. “I'm not kidding about that lock either.”

Monday was, by design, Neil's easiest day.  He only had the one class, and he used the remainder of the day to run errands.  So as soon as Barker let him out, his first stop was to the Store24 to pick up some groceries.  Considering his food storage options in his dorm was a mini-fridge and the top shelf of his closet, he only wound up with two bags and a twelve-pack of the store-brand cola.  

He dropped off the bare essentials of sustenance and took a brief moment to tidy his room.  There wasn't much cause to impress anyone, but he felt compelled to use the time. It felt better to accomplish something – anything – rather than waiting around for the day to end.  

The next two hours were spent overseeing a load of laundry in the dormitory laundromat. It was pretty depressing, featuring bare stone walls and illuminated by a single dirt-specked window. with a line of six washers and four driers on opposite sides of the room from each other.  There was a table in the middle, slightly off-set from the window in a way that mildly infuriated Neil. There were technically chairs, but two metal folding chairs took a certain wear-and-tear over the decades and had never been replaced.

Neil found himself sitting on the edge of the table, staring out that window and reflecting on the bizarre dream that had woken him with such a start.  The events of the day had driven out most of the fantastic experience from his mind, but bits and pieces still lingered.  Those omnipresent voices, speaking in grand detail about him.  An idyllic planet that was repeatedly destroyed. The beast from within the pit, as Neil was bound and helpless on a web of light.  

He considered whether or not he wanted to try and duplicate the effects of his lucid dreaming again tonight. Was it a story worth picking up? Or did he want to find himself once again at the genuine mercy of some phantasm?

A low blare came from the drier, in what was more than once mistaken for a fire alarm.

Discarding the shards of his recollection, he set about folding his clothes for about five minutes, before hastily shoving the rest of his clothes into his basket and resolving to just “do it later”.  This was perhaps his favorite lie.  

So it was, at 3:00 PM, Neil found himself back in his room with nothing else on the docket.  The young scholar now had to decide between drowning his mounting sorrows in video games, television, or – if he were feeling particularly adventurous – both at the same time.  

Looking to a torn up photo of Erica on his desk, he considered what he would be doing if last night's conversation had not happened. The weekends were theirs and sometimes she would visit him Monday night as well, to hit up a movie when it wasn't crowded with people.  She wasn't a terribly social girl, and Neil had always done his best to accommodate that.  

They both used to joke about how she was a “cheap date”.  She was the kind of person who genuinely enjoyed an experience-driven rendezvous.  Erica would much rather walk through the Voxton arboretum or take in one of the free community light-shows at the planetarium rather than actually go out and spend money.  

On their first date, Neil had nearly blown his chance with her by trying to flaunt his dad's wealth.  He had been given $100 to “impress the girl” with.  Erica, in that way she always did, knocked him flat on his ass.

“I'm not here to get to know your money, I'm here to get to know you,” she said, before insisting on having dinner at the cheapest restaurant in Voxton, where she paid for her own meal.  

The wake-up call had worked, and he loosened up considerably; enough so that she was agreeable to a second date.  In spite of the rough start, they had gotten along famously.  But apparently not as well as he had thought.

A knock on his door disrupted Neil from his day-dreaming.  

“Hey man, open up.  You're decent, right?”

Neil chuckled as he opened up the door.  His friend Damian could only be described as “dashing”.  The heart-throb of choice for all the girls when they were in high school together, his looks had only improved with age.  

“Did they finally let you in?” Neil teased.  

“Dude, they let you in,” Damian retorted.  “If I wanted in, I'd be in.  But money is good in the sales game.”  

“You work in retail.”

“Retail sales.  If I sell ten computers, they give me $50 of store credit,” Damian replied with a dismissive wave of his hand.  “Anyway, we doing dinner?  My treat.  Gotta cheer up my sad-sack friend, don't I?”

“Damian, you don't have to-”

“Nah, brother, I insist,” Damian smiled, patting Neil on the back.  “Breakups hurt. I've been here, and you're gonna be fine.  We will eat, drink, be merry and this weekend we will go out dancing and find a girl to make you forget all about her.”  

It was this benevolent nature that led to the two becoming friends in the first place.  In middle-school, they were both slightly awkward, but Damian had the further disadvantage of being an immigrant.  His mother Tabitha had fled Egypt shortly after that assassination of Anwar Sadat, carrying along a four-year-old Damian with her.  

The pubescent Damian was dealing with bullying and trying to adapt to both a new country and a stepfather who Neil had never met.  The two had met while Damian was hiding out in the library during one fateful lunch and they managed to hit it off over Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles. Neil had just started reading The Black Cauldron, but Damian was already on Taran Wanderer. A young boy's excitement to talk about his favorite fantasy series led to the longest-lasting friendship either of them had enjoyed. 

“Damian, I'm not sure if I really want to 'forget' about her, you know?” Neil sighed. “But I don't really need to get into that now.”

“Why not now?” Damian asked. “Take the time, friend.  Dinner can wait.”  

“It just seems kinda,” Neil struggled to find the words.  “Pointless.  I mean she's made her decision.  I have no idea why, but she made it clear she was done with me.”  

“Your feelings aren't pointless,” Damian replied, tapping his chest for emphasis.  “It's all we really have in this world.  Of course, if you don't want to talk, I won't make you.  But, uh, make a decision quick.  I skipped lunch.”

Neil laughed and opted to continue keeping his thoughts concealed. At least for now.  

“Alright.  Dealer's choice,” Neil said.  

“What a dangerous power you've given me,” Damian chuckled.  “Thai food it is.”

This one is hard to position.  The thread is destabilizing.  

Neil was not dreaming.  The voice was not in his head. It was just on the opposite side of his dormitory door.  The room around him was shrouded in darkness, and only the door was illuminated.  If he could just reach out and grab the handle...  

A terrible weight was dragging him down, and his limbs felt as though they were made of concrete.  A biting cold was gnawing at him, and there was a presence just behind him. Somewhere in that darkness, a great unseen thing wanted to devour him.  Panic seized him as he flailed his useless forelimbs at the impossible contraption.  A doorknob; he had seen thousands of these.  But his brain could not process how to manipulate one.  

With looming annihilation mere inches from him, he resorted to throwing all of his weight at the wooden barrier, hoping it would yield under the force of what, to Neil, felt like two tons of his own mass.

If the thread is lost, we lose the Binder.  This is unacceptable.

“Nox?” Neil called out, vaguely remembering the kindly voice from the other night.  

We are here, Binder.  Patience.  We will pull you into our realm.  You will not be sundered.  

At this pronouncement, a hideous shriek invaded Neil's mind. The darkness wrapped around the young man and began to flay him, leaving crimson marks on his arm.  By the time the third sinewy tendril had lashed him across the face, he felt an uncomfortably familiar tug around his midsection as he was dragged out of the darkness and through the door, beyond which lay the sea of stars from his prior visit.  

As the distant sparks sailed past him, the memory of that Eden weight heavily upon his mind.  He wanted to see it again, and yet he could not bear to watch it be destroyed once more.  The thought of having to relive the same disaster over and over again throughout eternity was unbearable. How many times would he have to suffer the same loss?  How many people would abandon him to the darkness of his own mind?  

Hey Neil, it's Dad.  Hope you've had a good Monday.  You're probably out with Erica, but I just wanted to get in touch with you about... well, your mother's remembrance.  It won't be a big social gathering like last year's.  Basically just gonna be your siblings and me, but we wanted to coordinate with you. Just give me a call back when you can.  I love you.  

His father didn't know yet.  Of course, why would he?  That was only last night?

Focus on the moment, Binder!

Rem's voice was as stern and monotone as ever, but with a renewed sense of urgency. There was a planet on the horizon, but it was no paradise.  The world was molten rock and scattered space-dust, perhaps one in the process of still being formed.  Or was this was had remained of the other world after the disaster?  

See past the reality of your eyes, Binder. They are not a reliable path to truth, Nox urged.  

He is weighed down by his emotional attachment to his own thread.  We are losing him, Rem added.  

The planet was quite hot, and Neil felt his flesh beginning to sear as he drew ever closer to it.  He closed his eyes as he fell through the atmosphere of a dying world, the weight of his grief dragging him into oblivion.
