I wonder how much of it is the prevalence of plot twists.

Like. People realize that you may foreshadow stuff that's NOT a plot twist, right? Horror movies do it all the time. It's not a plot twist that the monster will kill a protagonist. Showing the monster lurking in the background behind them for a few scenes is foreshadowing, but not a plot twist. The point is to build suspense, and dread. Horror literally doesn't work without the audience picking up on foreshadowing, because if YOU don't know a monster is following the character around, then you're just watching a shitty slice of life movie with no point until they're killed out of nowhere. It's the foreshadowing that is the whole point.

Having clues spread throughout a whodunnit isn't necessarily foreshadowing a plot twist. Glass Onion does this really well. There's not really a plot twist that it was actually aliens all along or a suicide, it's just revealed that the murderer wasn't very smart about it. Again, the genre doesn't work if there isn't foreshadowing that at least makes everything click in hindsight. Like, half the fun of this genre is picking up on stuff and when the reveal happens, screaming "I CALLED IT!" At everyone you're watching the movie with as they groan good naturedly bc you DID call it.

TLDR if there's something important enough to foreshadow then do it. If an audience member picks up on it it's not a failure of writing because you actually accomplished what foreshadowing is SUPPOSED to do: clue them in that something is going to happen, even if they don't know what/how.

that some people respond to any well-foreshadowed reveal with “ugh that plot twist was so predictable” proves bad faith criticism has rotted their brains to the point they think it’s bad writing if they can correctly identify information the writers were intentionally giving them

The best thing about writing is that you can foreshadow an entire plotpoint on a throwaway joke, and only the people who come to reread it will realise oh, what happened was always going to happen.

Kakanaru au where kakashi gets hurt on a mission and passes out in the middle of a forest on the way back to Konoha.

When he wakes up he’s neatly laid out in the middle of an old shrine, with fresh bandages wrapped around his stitched up wounds and warm tea at his elbow.

The fact he remained unconscious through someone moving him and closing his wounds was discontenting even if it wasn’t particularly surprising. He did lose a lot of blood and chakra after all.

Now that he’s awake, kakashi knows he should leave. He knows better than to test his luck staying in place for too long anywhere outside of the village.

But…he’s curious. And despite the stitches, he’s still in danger of infection considering Konoha is over a week away in his current state.

So he leverages himself up, and tries to look around as much as he can. But the entire shrine is empty. Not a single sign of the one that helped him.

When he wakes up again a few hours later there’s a pot of warm tea at his side to replace the old cup, a little pile of fruit, and new bandages. The day after that, there’s sake and plum wine added to the mix.

Kakashi doesn’t really know what’s happening but he’s never been one to sit idle nor has he ever been an ungrateful man. So as soon as he’s able to get up without his head spinning he gets to work. he sweeps the floors and dusts the cobwebs. Even polishes a little golden fox statue he finds tucked behind a wooden alter.

It’s the least he could do for his hidden host. The caretaker of this place maybe?

Kakashi’s body and chakra recovers faster than he anticipated. After five days he leaves even as the Hatake part of him that lives in back of his head keens.

Before he goes he pats the golden fox on the head. It was oddly cute compared to the 9 statues of snarling stone foxes surrounding it, though there was undeniable beauty in those too.

A few months later he’s injured again and realizes the shrine is on his way back to Konoha. He stops there to rest for the night and heads out in the morning, only taking the time to drink some of the tea and wipe down the alter, barely noticing how his chakra coils have refilled already.

And it keeps happening whenever he gets injured. He comes, he rests, he cleans, and goes with a pat to the gold statues head.

Until one day he wakes up to a long limbed blond at his side instead of the usual tea and fruits. When the blanket shifts to reveal a bare back and smooth tan skin he thanks every god out there for his mask covering his blush. Sleepy blue eyes blink open at him right on cue and honestly? Kakashi thinks he deserved that for not putting the pieces together earlier.

So. Others have noted that 'aiming for the boss's gut" could mean 'filling the boss's gut', and "putting that dead meat in its place" could mean just like. Cooking steak or something. And that perhaps ENA is just misunderstanding this and thinking she'll have to kill the boss because of her prior history with violence, and that Froggy only worded it that way because that kind of wording is more familiar to her and he was imitating her ('as you say in that wacky language of yours')

So, from this, we can deduce that ENA Dream BBQ is possibly just a story about a woman experiencing microagressions and PTSD while trying to deliver a doordash order. And that's just insanely funny to me lol

Sooooo because I’ve been seeing connections to Bobbys arc in all the Halloween episodes it got me thinking about the costumes from this seasons Halloween episode and how I thought at the time they were meant to be relevant to each characters arc for the season because it’s something the show likes to play on - giving hints through the set and costumes - I just hadn’t figured it out and then didn’t really think on it more because we got Eddie dancing and Buck escaped his dull, uninspiring relationship and I got distracted like the audhder I am!!

Then I saw something on twitter and Bluesky earlier and all the dots connected and I was right - the costumes are all about each characters arc for the season.

Mad scientist Hen - upcoming biohazard arc

Chim as Jason - a serial killer - Maddie getting kidnapped and nearly killed by one! (Which was also why Doug used the name Jason back in s2 - it was a play on the same thing!)

Vampire Bobby - vampires are undead and lore says they sleep in coffins - Bobby is about to be buried alive in a coffin - it’s a play on death and resurrection both catholic and vampiric (proof he won’t die!!)

Werewolf Eddie - transformation and identity - in modern literature and tv/film the werewolf has become connected to the idea of hiding who you are and being othered - and that has been taken up by the queer community because it is something they identify with - so Eddie’s arc about his identity and who he is, is clearly a queer one.

Cowboy Buck - hiding behind a giant stache - it’s about Texas but also about recklessness and impulsivity - which are considered cowboy traits, and in the uk a cowboy is someone who is false or dishonest - which with the theme of the season being lying and fakeness - would fit with the idea that Buck is hiding his true feelings (behind a moustache too big for his face!), that he’s not being honest about them - and that is connected to Texas because we’ve started to address that concept now that Eddie is there - because that’s where his heart is. Even Tommy is part of this costume led arc nod - Buck finds a corpse (which he thinks is fake but turns out to be real - which is a subversion of the real/fake thing and is also why in part it is dressed in something similar to Eddie’s bachelor party outfit - because it’s all about subversion and Buck having things the wrong way around) which is a representation of Tommy and why he sleeps on the couch like a corpse - which was clearly a direction and not his bad acting!! Billy was already a Tommy metaphor - losing his posse etc in the same way Tommy is feeling the loss of not being a part of the 118!!

I really do love the costume team so very much - they just keep on knocking it out of the park at every opportunity!
