Fell down an old reviews rabbit hole on my lunch hour and once again am pondering the tendency reviewers have to discuss the Gounod Faust as though Marguerite is being punished by the narrative instead of just the world around her. Like, okay, it's not as clear about that as the source material (and Gounod was a conflicted but observant Catholic, whereas Goethe was not a believer), but. I feel like you see this the most from reviewers who really like the baritone singing Valentin, who is the main voice of traditional morality in both the opera and its source material--but while the operatic version of him isn't as nasty as Goethe's, you know a character is in the wrong when an opera chorus tells him to maybe ease up on the slut-shaming. Slut-shaming is like half of what opera choruses do!

"And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,/ And said unto them, It is written, 'My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.'"
Matthew 21:12-13 (KJV)

WELL my church is a mess. Today in the afternoon, there was a meeting with all the church members gathering to basically talk badly about the pastor and decide whether he should stay as the pastor of the church or not. My parents went and voted for the pastor to stay. We actually like him, he's a good pastor. Independently of things we may think, we also believe he is doing a good job. Plus, his family consists of a big part of the church. But they want him gone. So I think my parents and I are also leaving the church. Which is fine. We now know that church is full of hypocrites who won't hesitate to talk shit about you. I know that nobody is perfect and we are all human, but I thought these people were a little different. Turns out they're WORSE than the catholics. Big cringe and yikes 😬.

Saw a pretty odd take on TikTok regarding abuse in the Catholic Church and priest kink. Essentially there's rhetoric that hierophilia/priest kink/religious fetishes etc. contribute to the abuse and harm that the Catholic Church causes and that people with aforementioned fetishes/kinks are guilty of perpetuating harmful narratives.
A lot of people with religious kinks and fetishes are often victims of religious abuse and maltreatment and the idea that, somehow, they themselves are contributing to the systemic abuse in the Church because they get off to kinky roleplay or enjoy smutty religious media is a ridiculous thought. It follows similar logic of blaming victims of sexual assault with rape fantasies of upholding rape culture and normalizing assault.
People are allowed to dislike religion being fetishized and integrated into kink but the fault of abuse in the Catholic Church lies solely on the Catholic Church and its centuries old culture of clericalism and secrecy. An individual finding religious people, items, rituals, etc. sexy in no way has the same institutional power to abuse and harm others the way the Catholic Church and clergy do.

One of the problems I think I detect with Catholics trying to dismantle the claims of the Reformation is that Catholics tend to look at the church as they understand it right now and--it being eternal--paint its present state back to the middle ages as though it has always been the same.
They do not generally recognize that the Reformation could have exposed legitimate problems with the Church and that the Church has changed since
as it has

my catholicism was temporary but my begrudging admiration for catholic aesthetics, theatricality, and unintentional camp is forever. it was a met gala theme for a REASON.
