𝗜 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗡𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗲 The cell continued to ring. He should talk to Sam, let him know that he was alive. He laughed bitterly at the thought, was he really alive? He didn't feel that way. He was flesh, bones, tears and blood. But alive? No. Living had just taken on another dimension. The point is that he died so many times that he lost count, but for the first time he knew what it was to really die, this death that people talk about, death in life.

How many important people fell on the way?

His mind returned to the day of his mother's death. Even though he was not in his room that day, his father had counted on so many details, on a night of drunkenness, that he didn't even need to see with his eyes, his mind "saw" much more than he wanted.

Then the father. That father obsessed with killing the damn demon who took the life of his beloved wife. The father who raised his children to save people, hunting things, the family business. The father absent for loving too much.

And Ellen and Jo. Pamela, Bob, Kevin, Charlie. And so many others. Many…

And again the father and mother.

And Sam. Each time he lost his brother, a piece of him died together. Sam, who kept calling over and over.

- Sam, I'm fine.

- Dean! What happened? Why did it take so long to answer the phone?

- Sorry, Sammy. Are you ok?

He heard the sound of his brother swallowing the words, those few seconds hanging over them like a sharp sword. Dean knew, he always knew.

- Sammy?

- Dean, everybody's gone, everybody. Charlie, Bob and even Donna. It's just me and Jack.

The brother's voice was weak. Sam who was so dedicated to protecting everyone, even with the weight of Eileen's loss on his shoulders. He wanted to hug him. He wished he could go back in time when he carried Sam in his boyish arms and rocked him, promising to protect him from danger. "Take care of your brother, Dean" had been the main task his father had given him, and he, as a good soldier, never deviated from his mission. Taking care of Sam, protecting him, was what gave him the strength to get up every morning.

- Sammy, come home.

- Dean, is everything okay? What happened to Billie?

- Billie is dead. You and Jack, come home soon.

- Okay, Dean.

He hung up the phone and put his hands on his face again. He was not able to tell Sam the whole truth, because telling what happened was having to face reality, and he was not yet ready to say goodbye.

The silence in the dungeon choked him, but he didn't have the strength to leave. Maybe he didn't want to leave. Somewhere in his heart, a fragile flame continued to resist. He looked at the wall, hoping the black hole would regurgitate what The Empty had stolen from him.

"I annoyed an ancient cosmic being so much that he sent me back."

Dean remembered those words as if they were said yesterday. He clung to them in despair. But deep down, he knew, he knew that The Empty would not give up again.

Why didn't he tell the truth? Why?

Why did he push his feelings into some dark corner of himself, not even allowing himself to think?

Why didn't he give himself the right to believe that he could be loved, be happy?

All that fury that has weighed on his chest since childhood, that anger that he thought defined him.

"Everything you have ever done, the good and the bad, you have done for love."

Even now he couldn't see himself that way, because that meant he was always a coward for not having struggled to take on what he felt.

Coward. He had been a coward until the end. And now he paid the price for being afraid to say the same words he had received.

The chest pain increased. He needed to get out of there, he needed to breathe. Shivering, using the wall as a support, he stood up slowly. The first steps were unstable. He managed to reach the chair in the middle of the room, held it in search of something solid to keep him on his feet until he felt he could walk without fear of falling.

When he finally reached the door, he couldn't resist and looked back again. That flame in his chest had just gone out. The pain increased, crushing his heart.

"You changed me, Dean ... I love you."

He ran out of the room, his hand over his mouth to stifle his sob.

He didn't want to be that anymore. He no longer wanted to be the Dean who assumed all the responsibilities and suppressed any feeling that his enemies could use against him. He was tired of being strong, of trying to be invincible.

He heard Sam calling for him. He needed his brother, needed this time to reverse logic, needed Sam to take care of him, to protect him from pain.

- Sammy.

Your voice so weak, so different from your voice of thunder.

- Sammy, Sammy!

He arrived at the library without strength. His brother was near the big table in the lobby.

- Sammy, please.

Sam ran towards him, followed closely by Jack. His frightened eyes were filled with concern. There, in the center of the library, the two came face to face.

He couldn't take it anymore, everything around him spun. He saw Cass in every corner of that place. Cass hugging him when they met after Chuck and Amara left. Cass sitting next to him in one of the few moments of peace, celebrating Jack's life.

Cass, smiling through her tears, saying goodbye to never come back.

- He's gone, Sammy.

Finally, the heavy tears broke through the barrier and he fell to the floor. The weight of defeat weighed on his body. He punched his chest several times in penance.

Sam didn't know what had happened, but he suspected it had to do with Castiel's absence. He knelt in front of his brother, pulling him into his arms. He always feared that this day would come, the day when Dean would accept his own feelings, but that Cass would not be there to receive them.

- He's gone, Sammy, gone. And I didn't say. I didn't say, Sammy.

- Put it all out, Dean, don't keep it anymore.

The brother's words allowed him to be the Dean that Castiel once loved.

- CASS!

The aching cry tore at his chest.

Jack watched his parents' pain and felt powerless because there was nothing he could do. All he wanted to do was bring Cass back, but he had no more powers. He no longer had Castiel. His father had died.

The strength with which the angel's name was said in that place full of magic, had the power to transcend the walls and resonate beyond that plane. In heaven, the angels wept for the loss of yet another of them. Castiel had been a friend and also an enemy, in the end being just another puppet in the hands of God.

In hell, Rowena stopped in the middle of a lustful laugh. His eyes watered. After all, the angel also became his boy.

But it was Chuck who was pierced by that spear of pain. He, who in his arrogance despised his own creations, who played with their lives, now felt the agony with such violence that it surprised him. In her mind, Amara's voice, full of bitterness, prophesied:

- Brother, you can lie to yourself as much as you want. But the truth is that you lost your most loyal son, the one who loved you so much, the one you wickedly despised. And I know it hurts you. We feel Dean's pain. And as long as we exist, we will carry that pain as a reminder of how bad we can be.

Chuck turned his eyes to Dean and for a moment hesitated in his firm intention to destroy everything. The weight of loneliness as a reminder of your choices. Sitting on his mythical throne, he was the image of a defeated god.

In the library, Dean continues to cry hugging his brother, his face buried in Sam's chest. It was sad to see that they had switched places, Sammy was taking care of Dean as Dean had always done for him.

- Dean, you need to vent, you can't have all that feeling with you anymore.

The pain, like fire, rose in his throat and was finally released.

- Cass, you are the only one I want to have, my true happiness. Cass, I love you ...

Words can transform. Words heal.

In The Empty, where angels and demons rest, dreaming eternally of their past, Castiel, in his serene sleep, dreams of the words he wanted to hear so much. His lips curl in an affable smile, while a tear escapes his sleeping eyes.

- I always knew, Dean … ----------------------------------------------------------------------------  I wrote this story a few days after the episode aired, listening to "I Will Never Be The Same" (which became the title of this story) by Melissa Etheridge, because this song, for me, is the synthesis of what happened to these two characters. These were, as they have been ever since, days of sadness and anxiety. The question the fandom keeps asking itself: is it really the end? Did the series make Destiel canon to kill Castiel soon after? As a fan, especially as a fan of Destiel, I am still waiting for the return of our beloved angel in the last episode, to finally find happiness with the man she loves. Because these two definitely deserve to be happy after everything they've been through. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------  English is not my first language. Please forgive any mistakes I may have made. And I don't know whose illustration it is. If anyone knows, please let me know so I can give the artist proper credit.

Pinterest Vent

I went on Pinterest for the first time in a while. I used to spend hours scrolling through and looking at art or funny stories.  I saw nothing wrong with it, and it was honestly fun.

But this time I felt so angry and frustrated.

I made a Tumblr and came here because of all the stories I had found, I saw were from Tumblr. I figured I would find them at their source. 

Boy am I glad I did.

I’ve found so many new things to read and view, and I’m able to search through blogs for complete storylines and AU’s!  From here, I found many I follow have Instagram, so I went their too.  Then I found even more to enjoy and people to support which I never could on Pinterest.  I’ve had a lot of fun here, and I never saw a reason to use Pinterest again.

But when I got on, I saw so much that came from Instagram or Tumblr, so many artists who worked so hard and art I enjoyed so much! But something was always wrong about it.  In all the captions, or comments, or the images themselves, no one ever mentioned who made it.  I know Pinterest links the website it’s found on, but for Tumblr, it only takes you to whoever reblogged its page.  Not the post itself that you could follow to the source.

I just spent hours searching through peoples blogs and my Pinterest homepage trying to find the source. Some art styles I recognized, and I was able to Pin them with the credit in bold right in the front.  But I found a lot I couldn’t name.  It was pure luck I found an image pinned from the original artist's blog instead of someone else's that I was able to credit a multitude of posts.

Pure luck that people could be given proper credit.

I know that a lot of the people on there don’t recognize they are doing something off.  Heck, I was one of them!  But I also know for a fact that others do.  Everyone can reverse image search too!  If you know you should be giving credit to someone, it doesn’t matter if you know them or not, if you don’t have to spend more than 3 seconds figuring out who it is, or if you have to take a few minutes or less to image search, always figure out who it’s from!

Why Reblogging Is So Important to Artists | Why Being Nice Online is Important | Storytime

First of all, I wasn’t going to talk about this. Because I thought it wasn’t needed, because I thought there was enough information out there asking people NOT TO REPOST ART and if we do, at least give PROPER CREDIT.

But there isn’t. That’s alright. Let’s talk about it.

 Two days ago I was approached by the lovely @vaugleysassygrunt​ who told me someone was reposting my art. They said this person had been changing their url all day (and they’re still doing it) and sent me a hyperlink to the art they had posted. It was one of the comics from my on-going Sanders Sons series, a sequential comic I have been working on for almost a year. It was pretty dear to my heart (and the context was pretty important as well). 

My immediate thought was “Oooh boy, my first art thief, that’s so exciting”. All the big ones get those. Along I went to this person’s tumblr and was about to send them a message when I saw they had already addressed the issue by saying they found reblogging annoying and that’s why they preferred reposting. That they never claimed the art was theirs.

Of course my first thought was “if you don’t like reblogging what are you doing on tumblr?”. But we shouldn’t give in to our first thoughts. They’re often rash.

So I get into a conversation with said art thief and try another way. Because THERE IS another way. We can’t nunchuk our way to awareness. This is what I wrote:

Hi, friendo! I'm sorry people are giving you a hard time, but crediting art is very important for us artists :( It's how we make our carreers. I understand you don't enjoy reblogging, but it can help people find our art and find more of our work if they need to. I also am really embarrassed to have to ask, but could you please credit sandersssons-comic or sanderssons in the quadruplets AU? It's a series I spent a lot of time on and I would hate it if people only read a part of it. Thanks and have a good day :D

They repond right away. Telling me they accept my apology (?)

Also asking how much artists get.

FIRST LESSON TO TAKE FROM THIS: Google Images, such as Google itself, it’s an image SEARCHER. It COMPILES images from the whole internet. An image being on Google Images DOES NOT MEAN IT’S UP FOR GRABS. Google Images provides the proper source of the picture.

BESIDES, Google Images can be a great tool for finding the author of an artpiece. Just go to Google Reverse Image Search. You can do it from your phone and from your desktop. Just put the image on and Google finds the original source for you!

So I proceed to explain to this person that artists don’t make much. Most of us get money from comissions that depend on the complexity. Some get Ko-Fis and Patreons and online shops with stickers and key chains and some other goodies.

ALTHOUGH, FOR YOU I ALSO SAY: PEOPLE ARE ENTITLED TO THEIR ART EVEN IF THEY DON’T GET MONEY FOR IT. BECAUSE IT’S THEIR OWN AND THEY MADE IT. DON’T BE A DICK.

They say: 

I don’t mean to be rude but you could just get more money by being an art teacher or something that pays good minimum wage. 

And you can imagine this big red flag raising in my head. Disengage. Disengage. Disengage. But this was a HUMAN BEING. And a misinformed one. I had already made contact. Might as well. I explained that we DO NOT WANT other jobs. This is our jobs. This is our choice of carreer. And it’s not hard to respect.

Our friend says they don’t understand cause they’re in high school and they don’t draw a lot (as if art knowledge just comes by osmosis when you draw a lot)

I said it was totally cool not to understand. Because it is

SECOND LESSON: SOMETIMES PEOPLE DON’T KNOW THINGS. I came back to tumblr for the Thomas Sanders fandom. A fandom that thrives on kindness and caring and validation of different people  

They thanked me for being cool and explaining things and asked if we could be friends. I said that absolutely

(After our little talk, they started giving credit to the pictures they could find. Read as: the ones that had signatures on the image)

We talked yesterday a whole part of the day. We get acquainted. They’re finding themselves as non-binary, they’re in high school. Things like that. I tell them I’m 20 and in college for journalism

In this proccess I explained how comissions worked and, again, why reblogging and not reposting was important

So yesterday night I’m already in bed when they message me “Hi”

I responded I was tired and going to sleep. They said they were going to bed too. And that they hated when they were accused of something they didn’t do. Which was stealing art

And I said that, indeed, they weren’t STEALING art per say. But reposting was a dick move. They got PISSED. So I tried to find an analogy they would understand.

Ok, think of it like this

You've painted a tradicional piece in oil and put it in your gallery with other paintings

Someone can't come and take the painting off the wall and put it on their gallery

Even if they say it's yours... It doesn't bring more people to your gallery. It exposes your work... But that's mostly it. 

To which they replied:

The Mona Lisa got stolen once and people have made counterfeit paintings in the past 

Which, goes without saying DOESN’T MAKE IT OKAY. Just because someone already murdered another, it doesn’t mean we can go around on a killing spree.

Besides, tumblr has original content and tools to get replicated inside the website. And so I told them.

And then again:

Why are the majority of people here artists who clearly don’t realize they can get a part time job? 

And I told them, AGAIN, they do not want part time jobs. They want these jobs.

They said I lied then, when I said art didn’t pay well. And proceeded to say they didn’t understand why people want to be starving artists.

Also that tumblr didn’t have the kind of images they wanted. EVEN THOUGH THIS WHOLE THING WAS HAPPENING BECAUSE ARTISTS FROM TUMBLR WERE FINDING THEIR ARTWORKS REPOSTED ON THEIR ACCOUNT.

I was also making them upset.

I tried to explain further, but they blocked me.

Fortunately, I was able to send one last message and I think it’s the biggest message I want to pass here.

I'm sorry I'm upsetting you but I've been nothing but respectful

Be respectful. Even when you’re mad. Even when people are rude. Kill them with kindness. If they’re too immature to listen to you, that’s on them. Practice what our dear youtubers preach (Thomas Sanders, Jack, Mark). 

This person is still reposting, yes. They’re giving credit, but still reposting. It’s a start, I believe. It’s more than I would have gotten sending a hate ask. 

So now, princes, princesses and non-binary royalty, I give you the

TL;DR

Artists are ENTITLED TO THEIR ART. You. Are. Not. It doesn’t matter if it’s on tumblr, on google images or on the street. If there’s a signature or not. Getting money for it or not (also, since I’m here, don’t forget that art is not only visual arts, but also videos, music, podcasts and a bagillion other things. If it’s not yours, don’t post it)

You DO NOT get a say on how people should get their wage (just like you don’t get a say on how they dress, on where they go, or who they love)

When you REBLOG, you help the artist to get known. It costs nothing. When you REPOST, you’re a dick. You’re not helping anyone and you’re giving yourself more trouble than just clicking a simple button

It’s okay not to know everything, but listen when people talk respectfully

Don’t be hard on people when you can be nice. Aggravating people will only make enemies of people who can be friends

Be mature enough to accept sometimes you’re wrong

BONUS ROUND: I believed we were done, but I saw this post short after. I didn’t think it was relevant to include, but I feel like I must say something.

I’ve had it with everyone being nothing but mean and antagonizing me. I’m not the bad guy and I really want to kill myself or leave tumblr. I’m never accepted by anyone or anywhere. Hell its hard to tell my friends I’m into men and women or that I like certain things. I get rejected constantly so goodbye forever

Please notice that your life BEING HARD does not make up for BEING A DICK and REFUSING TO BE EDUCATED. I will not refrain from telling you the truth R E S P E C T F U L L Y to protect your feelings just because you’re LGBTQ+ (specially because the you being B part was totally new information for me in this post/and I’m in the community too).

So since I’m giving moral lessons, do this for your friends. We should not stand for something we do not agree. Real friends will respect your side and reconsider. Hello, there!

I just wanted to let you know that reposting gifs/graphics/pictures that other people have worked really hard on IS stealing! Even saying "credit to" etc doesn't count and is not okay. Tumblr has a built in search gif function that PROPERLY links back to credit the rightful owners and let them know someone liked something of theirs so much and used it for something like a fic! Plus, caratblr is extremely friendly and I'm sure if you asked, they would be happy to assist, help, and/or make banners/headers for you. What you're doing is exactly if people would copy and paste your story and claim it's theirs. Wouldn't be very nice, would it? :(

I'm hoping you meant no harm, as fellow content creators, we should always give proper credit where it's due and look out for one another :) I'm sure you don't want your awesome stories tarnished by the fact that you are reposting other's works as your headers and banners!

Thank you for bringing this to my attention and I know well that I should be giving credit to the rightful owners of the gif as the majority of the gifs I use are not made by me. I did have a plan to go back and reverse image search all of the gifs and find the rightful owners (I do have some links of the original creators of some of the gifs I use - such as tistory blogs) but I have not had the time to do so yet and I already have more than 300 posts containing uncredited gifs or pictures. I used to use the Tumblr gif function but there was not enough variety & gifs that I wanted in what I could find, so I branched out onto different platforms like Pinterest, NAVER, and different search engines for specific gifs that I liked and wanted as a banner for my fic. I am grateful for you to educate me and I will make sure to credit from now on where I found the gifs/pictures, but I'm afraid that a lot of times I won't be able to find the 'original' creator (since people also repost other people's things and spread it).

Again, I am thankful and I'm always grateful to recieve a lesson and learn from my mistakes. I am also genuinely sorry for overlooking it as stealing because I did recognize the problem a long time ago but I did not fix it and thought that not claiming the stuff as mine or erasing watermarks would be enough, continuing to overlook it as a problem. Since I saw many people all over Tumblr, Wattpad, and in social media overall using pictures that weren't made by them, I guess a part of me thought it was okay too. I also thought it would be too much of a hassle to ask every creator of a gif if I could use their gif since a lot of them had been no longer active. My mindset then was also immature and just "oh, it's not actually theirs because they just cropped & cut a video from seventeen so it's technically seventeen's" which was a super bad mindset that I forgot about but once had (Edit: I also thought nobody would care and I'd get away with it like everybody else and that it was okay and wasn't a big deal - so in the end, not crediting had become a part of my posts and I forgot about crediting. I also thought that gifs and fics were two different things but I don't want to come across the day I'm in that position where my work is used and my name is not properly credited).

What do you think you could be doing better and what are your plans for the future of this blog?

I like this question. One of the big things I need to be doing better is ensuring that the artists are properly promoted. That’s why you’ve been seeing a link at the bottom of most recent posts. I’ve upped my process from just draining my vaporwave folder into the blog to extensively reverse image searching it all in an attempt to find and credit the original creator. Of course, there are times where I can’t find them, but then I try to put a link to where I got the image from and hope someone could enlighten me on the source.

My end goal is to be able to credit each artist in a fashion similarly to how I do on Music Monday. I would also love you all’s help. If you ever see an image, new or old, that you know the source to and I haven’t managed to grab it. PLEASE please please leave a comment with it or shoot me a message so I can add it. At the end of the day, I want this to be a beneficial experience for the artist and not the generic “They stole my art and didn’t even give credit” type problem.

Other things I could be doing better are making the blog more mobile friendly. I have plans to make a hub post with all of the links in it for mobile users in the near future. I also have plans to include a proper posting schedule in said post so you all can have a good idea of what happens on what day.

I don’t really know what my plans for the future of this blog are. I’m kind of just enjoying getting to interact with you all land add a bit of sunshine to your days. My unofficial plan is to keep improving the blog and slowly start to expand onto other social media platforms :D

Okay Buggies. Let's talk about FanArt.

Particularly Bughead FanArt - but more generally ALL fanart.

If you're like me (and I'm pretty sure you are) - there is nothing like seeing a beautiful image of your favourite character or pairing that someone with amazing talent has spent time on perfecting and then sharing with the fandom.

Fanartists (like fic writers) are a freaking gift to every fandom. In our particular fandom - we have a LOT of people willing to share their talents with us. What a total blessing. Love them. They love us too - most of the time.

But I have a question for you though - (and please excuse me as I refer to fic rather than art for a moment) : IF you read a familiar fanfiction that was copied and pasted into another profile and reposted to share it with the rest of the fandom because that user just totally loved it and wanted other people to see it too - would you do something about it? Would you speak up?

I’ve been in this situation. I KNOW that I'd /report/ it at the archive saying that someone was plagiarizing a fic that didn't belong to them. I'd probably write a post about it here - informing my followers that "hey - my friend's fic was copied and someone is trying to pass it off as their own. Help a friend out and report it as well!"

Would my reaction change if someone found my friend's fic but didn't know who it belonged to so they just posted it with a note that said "not mine. let me know if it's yours" ?  No! It damn well wouldn't. I’d still be pissed that someone isn’t giving my friend the fic writer the credit for the awesome fic they shared. Even if they didn’t MEAN to steal it - that’s what they’ve done.

Let’s move this analogy back to FanArt.

Even if you just found super cute art on Instagram and you just want to share it with your Tumblr peeps. Here' s a hint about fanart. It's freakishing EASY to find out where it came from to give proper credit. To link back to the original gallery or location where it was updated. It’s SUPER easy to be a decent person.

So let me give you a brief tutorial on how you can properly credit fanart when you share it! (and full disclosure - I got permission from the fanartist in my example to use her as this tutorial because I'm not a complete hypocrite).

I want to share this fun bunch of seasonal happiness with my tumblr followers - who I love. But whoops - I don’t know who drew it. What to do?

Oh right! We live in a world with Google. I’m gonna do a reverse image search at Google Images. https://images.google.ca

OOOH look - an actual original posting is just there on the SECOND PAGE. It literally took 0.43 seconds for us to find an official reblog of the artist’s original post. LESS THAN A SECOND, friends! 

I admit - some of the other links pulled up for this specific picture weren’t what we wanted. But after clicking a couple times, it’s pretty easy to find links with credit. In fact - the very very first listing I highlighted above didn’t have a reblog of the original - but it had a link to Brit’s Instagram page and with merely a few minutes of research I could then either reblog from the page the original artist posted it, link back to their gallery (which happens sometimes when the artist only has a DA page for example) or at the VERY LEAST attach a link to credit it with the artist’s name. amazing (”art by @starlitsummersky” or “Look at this art - I love it by @dollihaze”)

It’s that simple, Buggies. Let’s show respect to our FanArtists. We love them and we want them to keep providing us with content - so please please make sure to credit them. 

ALSO - if this nifty tool doesn’t work... then maybe rethink sharing it. I KNOW we live in a world where we want constant validation and if we can be the first person to share something no one else has seen then we’re a hero (anyone who follows my blog knows how I am with Insta pictures of Dylan - I LOVE being a hero) - BUT when it’s fanart - and you can’t find the artist to credit - please think twice about sharing it. It’s plagiarizing in the purest sense of the word. It’s taking credit from the content creator and while you’re a hero for a brief moment - you’re a thief forever. Just don’t.

Alrighty, so if you haven’t heard from July 2nd until July 15th, people from the fandom will be participating in Miraculous Content Creator Blackout ( @miraculousblackout ) in order to protest the rampant art theft that has been affecting many creators in the fandom. In essence, people are committing to pausing content creation, freezing any ML related blogging, and spreading information about art theft. 

Now, for the sake of transparency, I will say that I am personally choosing not to halt my blog and will continue to post my writing. This is a personal decision and is in no way meant to delegitimize the protest. Many of you follow me for my writing, and I do not wish to deprive you all of that. I also want to continue to support ML artists and writers by continuing to reblog their work.

However!! I do want to say something about content theft and what can be done to prevent it. 

Etiquette

There’s really murky legalities around fanart/derivative works and copyright claims over the owners of the characters depicted. To save the legal jargon, I feel like this boils down very easily to a certain standard of respect and etiquette for people who put labor into creating any form of content. 

You do not have any right to decide how art/writing is used if you do not own it/did not create it. Very simple. Not yours? You don’t have a right to decide how it’s used. That right belongs entirely to an artist. This means that an artist can decide how they wish for you to interact with their creations, and it is basic etiquette and decency to respect those wishes. 

Acceptable forms of interaction usually involve interacting with the original post. So liking/reblogging/retweeting/etc. the original post, leaving comments, sending the artist messages about the post, etc. are great ways of appreciating art. It gets the artists hits and notes and it’s a great way to ensure they’re getting credit for their work. 

Now if you want to post art somewhere else, put it in a video, translate a fic you found, etc., always ask the artist for permission first just to be safe. It’s best to ask and get permission rather than assume it’s okay and upset an artist. Now if an artist says no, your job is to respect that decision and interact with their art in the way they’re comfortable with. If you’re thinking of interacting with an artist’s work in a way that they have not explicitly approved of, always always always ask to be sure. 

This also goes for tracing, taking another person’s art and putting it into your own creation, slapping art on merchandise without the artist’s permission, etc. Don’t do it without express permission. 

If ever you find yourself asking, “but I said it’s not mine!,” “I’m giving publicity to the artist,” “it’s art on the Internet I can do what I want,” refer to the bolded text: you do not have any right to decide how art/writing is used if you do not own it/did not create it.

What do I do if I’ve found stolen/reposted art?

First, make sure that it is indeed stolen/reposted. Good way to tell is to check watermarks, check posts, and check tags. A very quick and easy way to make sure the poster of the art is actually the artist is to check the art for watermarks and see if it matches the username of the poster. Now this often isn’t ironclad, so another good way to check is to read the posts of the original work. If you see someone saying “credits to the artist,” “look at this pretty art I found,” etc. you can be sure it’s a reposting. Checking the tags is another good method that I’ve used. A lot of artists tend to tag their art with things like #mine, #myart, etc. and that’s a good way to tell if the post is original. 

Now, if you can’t figure out who the artist is or you’re not sure if this is stolen/reposted, another good method is doing a reverse image search on Google. Google allows you to search by image rather than keywords and will show you every website in which the image appears. This is usually a very good way to try and see not only where else this image appears, but where it originated from. This is also good for people who find art randomly on Google and want to find the original artist to ask them permission to use their art. 

If you think art you’ve seen is stolen/reposted, it’s best to notify the artist right away before taking any action on their behalf. Simply sending them a link to what you think may be reposted art is often the best thing to do so that they’re aware and they can proceed from there. Be very careful about sending reports on behalf of others until you’re positive that is the method they wish to proceed with. If you know for sure that the artist does not condone reposting, you could report art “on the behalf of the artist.” 

Now, not only is it very possible that a thief/reposter will refuse to take down the stolen art, but it also happens quite often if the constant art theft posts made by fandom artists wasn’t enough of a hint. If talking to the thief/reposter first doesn’t work, that’s where you report the post/user. 

So how do I report stolen/reposted art?

@wintermoth has this really amazing comprehensive guide for artists that want to report their stolen/reposted art that you can find right here. As mentioned before, if you are not the artist of the stolen art, it’s usually best to notify the artist first and make sure to submit reports “on the behalf of the artist” if you’re 100% sure they do not condone that method of theft/reposting and are fine with fans reporting on their behalf. 

What about fics?

Same policies apply. If you want to translate a fic or throw it up on another website (such as Wattpad) that is something you need to ask the writer first and give them the proper credits. When it comes to fanfiction, the best thing you can do for a writer is reblog, like, comment, bookmark, gives kudos, and circulate links to the original piece. Anything past that needs the express permission of the writer. I don’t think I need to say that outright plagiarism of fics is nothing short of theft. 

This also goes for fandubs, using fics in comics, etc. Ask the writer! Sometimes we’re happy to let you dub over our work, translate it, and put our fics in comics so long as you let us know, credit us, and link back to our original writing. If a writer happens to not be okay with that under any circumstances, that is something that you need to respect. Once more:  you do not have any right to decide how art/writing is used if you do not own it/did not create it.

When it comes to reporting fics, you’re likely going to be doing that either on AO3, Fanfiction.net, Tumblr, or Wattpad. 

AO3: you can use this Report Abuse Form to file a complaint if you think that your writing has been plagiarized. This usually works for unauthorized posting of your fics and outright stealing your fics. Have links available and be as specific as you can in explaining what sort of offense was committed. 

Fanfiction.net: you can visit their Support page and email their support team with a complaint about abuse by putting the word “abuse” somewhere in the subject of the email. Again, provide as many links as you can and be thorough in your explanation (typically it suffices to say that you believe your story has been plagiarized or resposted without your permission)

Wattpad: you can visit their page on How to Report a Story. Essentially what you’ll want to do is go to the description of the story that you’re reporting and find the “Report this Story” link on the sidebar on your right hand side. When you reach the portion where it asks you to choose the issue you’re having, you’ll select “I have a Copyright violation” and follow the instructions that follow.

Keep in mind that with Wattpad, you have to have an account to see the stories on Wattpad and only the original author can submit a report. So make sure that you notify the original author of the fic if you happen to see their stolen fics on Wattpad. 

Tumblr: similar to stolen/reposted art, you can file a Misattribution/Non-Attribution Abuse Report through Tumblr’s Abuse Page. They make it very easy and simply ask you to provide the link to the stolen fic and the original fic in order to submit the abuse report.

I'm a lesser-known game dev in this community and, while I'm really glad that art theft isn't tolerated here, I'm also scared of accidentally using something and then getting a lot of hate before I can apologize. I know that's not what's happened here, and you're very reasonable, but could I have some reassurance about how these things are usually dealt with? I'm fairly new here and this is a bit scary

Of course!  There’s two ways to deal with accidental art theft: prevention & correction.

Prevention

The best way to avoid dealing with accidental art theft is by slimming down the chances of art theft happening in the first place.

Use resources from their source.  Download something that’s from the creator’s home page or art page, or a post they artist themselves made online rather than from a blog that just uploads things together.  Graphics packs made by a bunch of contributing artist are fine, but graphics packs complied by others are more likely to contain something that might not actually be free to use.

If you find something you’d like to use in a compilation, reverse google image search that shit just in case.  That way, you can find the proper artist and give them credit if they ask, or avoid using it if it’s only usable on DA or Gaia.

Even if credit is not required, give credit in a separate text file of your game with a link back to the site or post you got it from.  This makes it easier for you to give proof you didn’t steal something since you can just link back to them that way.

If you can’t find the original owner, don’t use it.  If you’re having a hard time finding the owner, I’d make a post here or on a forum asking others “Hey, you know the source for this?  I’d like to use it in my game, but I can’t find the original creator for it.”   If you can’t find them, it’s better to not use it just in case.

Correction

The next best way is to make sure 

If you use something in your game that turns out to be stolen

Speak politely and deal with everyone in a calm manner.  If someone leaves a message or makes a callout post that’s like “Do NOT support this creator, they have stolen assets from this and that!”, stay calm and provide your sources, along with an apology.  State that you didn’t know at the time since you got it from this source, and you thought they were the original owner (thus why you got that list of sources mention in the prevention part earlier!).  

If someone is basically doing roid rage at you, like “I can’t fucking believe you stole this.  Do you know how hard artist work on their stuff? I hope your fucking account gets deleted off the internet and you break your arm you fucking bitch.”  Stay calm.  Realize the other person is either heartbroken by mistake and that you’re not at fault, or that they’re on a crusade and you don’t need to deal with them.  You can either answer them calmly, or delete their ask from your askbox.  You can ignore them on a post too if you really can’t deal with them.  All you can do is provide a source and then run back and change it up. 

If you’re a nervous nelly and can’t deal with attacks like that, or you’re a very passionate person who can get super angry when someone accuses you of something, step back from the computer and take time to come up with your response back.  If you still can’t deal with it, show it to a friend so they can advise you on how to answer, or let them answer for you (a calm friend if you have one).  That’s what I do sometimes - I hate letting my emotions get away from me and accidentally hurting others or myself if I reply like that.

Don’t beg for forgiveness or drown in your own pity.  I.e. “I’m so sorry i never meant to do this oh my god i’m so sorry this is the worst thing that could happen I’m so fucking sorry i just wanted to make everyone happy i’m a fucking failure and a terrible human being”.  A) No you’re not, you just made a mistake.  Don’t be too hard on yourself.  B) It’s not needed.  Just apologize and fix it.

Don’t rant and rave.  “I can’t fucking believe this fucking happened this piece of shit art site I can’t trust anyone any more.  I hope they break their arm, they don’t deserve to be a part of this fucking community.”  That just makes you look bad :c 

Whatever you do, contact the original author of the resource(s), apologize and show them where you got it (whether it’s a forum post or site), and ask for permission to use it in your game.  If they say no, all you have to do is change it.  That’s all you can do.

If you can, report the thief after you show the original owner.  If you can’t find the original owner, report them as soon as you find them.

If someone still accuses you of theft even after the fact, stand your ground.  If not, just delete the ask or ignore them.  You don’t need to be around people who won’t accept the truth. 

Stay calm.  It’s an accident, and all you can do is fix it!

Give Appropriate Credit

If you’re sharing a piece of art that you found, make sure you source it. If you don’t know the artist, a quick reverse image search on Google is one way to track down the original artist, though you may have to click through several links before you get to the source.

If you’re quoting from someone else (be it someone’s fic, meta post, whatever), provide the source.

Just because you’re on the Internet and in fandom doesn’t mean this is a free for all. Don’t claim work as your own. Provide sources for what you’re sharing.

Ship and Let Ship

No one else is obligated to like or dislike the same ships as you. Ship hate is a waste of time. However, if you must engage in ship hate keep to your own sandbox. Don’t be an ass. Don’t be a spammer.

If you don't understand why people ship said ship, guess what? You don't have to. No one is obligated to explain their reasoning to you (though if you ask, politely, people may be willing to share their reasoning).

Kink and Let Kink

Way back when, in fandom, one would often see: Your Kink Is Not My Kink But Your Kink Is Okay (YKINMKBYKIOK). This still applies.

If there's a kink you don't like, don’t understand or which causes a severe revulsion in you: leave it alone. Don't go looking for it to complain about it. Blacklist it. If someone you read/follow does not tag for that kink, politely request that they tag it.

If you don't get said kink, guess what? You don't have to. Your understanding or acceptance is not necessary when it comes to someone writing about or participating in a kink.

Post Proper Warnings (Creators)

Warn for things which others may not want to read about. Warn for things which could be disturbing or triggering. Biggies may include: non consensual or dubious consensual sex; abuse (physical, emotional or sexual); self-harm, torture. Others may include: graphic violence, incest (even consensual among adults), character death, explicit sex, etc.

Also realize that you can't warn for everything under the sun. Sometimes blanket warnings - such as "dark themes" and "graphic violence" - have to suffice for all the little nuances that show up in your work. 

Readers, remember: you can politely request that someone tag for certain things if they haven’t and most writers will often be happy to do so. However, do not flame people if they didn't tag for a very specific squick or tirgger. Particularly if the author has other warnings in place under which said things can be encompassed. You do have your own part to play in determining if you want to risk reading something that has elements which might be a problem for you.

Fic Authors Don’t Owe You Anything

Most fic writers write fanfiction because they love the media they’re writing about. They could be spending time writing other things (gods know I have a backlog of original stuff.) And their fic tends to be, first and foremost, what they want to write, what's bursting out of their mind.

So, what they write may not be what you want to read.

Many fic writers do welcome requests. If you like someone’s writing, you may politely request that they write about Thing A or Thing B.

You do not, however, have the right to to tell them what they’ve written is [insert subjective descriptor] here and so they should write this other thing instead because reasons (whether those reasons are well intended or not).

You may dislike a work all you like. You may critique a work all you like. You may complain (in your own space) about a work.

You may not harass the author. Or their readers.

You may seek to open a dialogue with the author.

That author doesn’t owe you a fic fill from your wish list.

If the fic you want written is that important to you: write it yourself.

I spent some time hunting through Deviant Art, and had no luck there, and reverse image search just turns up that same DA “I own none of these” page.
