Methotrexate Update
Doctor got back to me about my labs. My absolute monocytes are high but she isn’t concerned. She didn’t explain why (my best guess it’s bc my exercise has increased so drastically in such a short amount of time but idk) She says I can stay at the same dose and she doesn’t need another lab for three months. I have been doing GREAT on it. Hardly any negative side effects.
The stomach pain I’ve had every night for a year is gone.
My post-exercise chest pain that I’ve been going to cardiologist and ER for since Oct 2022 is completely gone (playing and shoveling snow 100% would have set that off)
TMI // My period has been freaking purple since Sept 2022 and I’ve been bleeding so much that the OBGYN thought I had a fibroid rupture. Well I just had my first period on Methotrexate and it’s all back to normal now and the amount was 1/3 what it has been which is a huge relief. It still hurt but I was able to eat and drink which I usually struggle with for the first few days. Maybe the pain will get better over time.
My gums don’t bleed any more when flossing. It just stopped as soon as I started methotrexate.
I’m able to eat and drink a lot more than I was which is great.
I have way more range of motion in my joints (which is making me have more problems with my hypermobility but whatev)
I still have muscle and joint pain but I honestly think most of it is bc I’ve been able to do so much more. I was taking 600 mg ibuprofen 2-3 times a day and my pain was still 7-7.5/10 and now I’m not taking any ibuprofen except maybe once every couple days and it’s a solid 6-6.5/10
Oh and I can take deeper breaths. Like I’m still having low oxygen show up on my oxymeter but for most of my life my ribs have felt like I’m wearing a corset and they can’t expand when I breath in and that has improved so much that I just walk around the house thinking “wow. I can take a breath. Wow” I’m not sure if this is due to my joints and ribs having more range of motion or if it’s connected to the hyperinflation of my lungs that showed up on the X-ray. Idk but it’s awesome and I’m making an appointment with pulmonologist again to double check lung stuff
The only con I’m currently having is the high absolute monocytes which my dr says is fine and I’ve been having really bad night sweats (actually I’m sweating a ton all the time) but I think my body is just like…recalibrating. Usually effects are really seen after a few months so I’m super excited for 2024!
Mandana’s Health Update
Surprise surprise the new vet doesn’t want to prescribe LDN/s
I get why. There are no studies on using LDN for pain in dogs (there are a few cancer studies in dogs which include LDN for pain relief and QOL but whatev) I humored her and tried to use Carprofen but Mandana doesn’t do well on pain meds and always gets an upset stomach after a couple days. This time was no different and she was miserable and vomiting so I took her off it. We discussed all of our options which I’ll list now for reference:
Decrease carprofen from 75mg twice a day to 75mg once a day // not gonna work bc the original dose wasn’t even very effective for managing her pain and I imagine if she’s already having problems with NSAIDs then taking even a small dose every day for years will hurt her.
Try a different NSAID called Meloxicam // we expect the same problem we have with carprofen
Try a different type of pain relief called Amantadine // Used along side NSAIDs (which we can’t do) so not very effective on its own and can have a side effect of urine retention which Mandana is prone to (she gets this as a “rare” side effect of both apoquel and Benadryl so I would rather not risk it, esp since Proin gave her high blood pressure and we had to discontinue it so there would be no back up if she got incontinence again)
Try the new type of pain relief that was just approved in the US called Librela // This is what we’re going to do next. She has an appointment for her first injection 1.5 weeks from now.
Consult with a Neurologist and get an MRI // After we get her back pain approved by our PetsBest insurance we will make an appointment for a neurologist consult and MRI. The two X-rays we have are 9 months apart and show a narrowing of the disc space between L4-5 but the general consensus is that it shouldn’t be causing as much pain as she is in so an MRI will give us a better idea of what’s going on and the Neurologist might have more treatment options for us.
We really want to wrap up some of these big health concerns for both of us before 🐾2025🐾👀 and we are already making a lot of progress so I’m super hopeful!

ok IK dec just started but im impatient LOL. 2022 summary!!! n 2021 for comparison
wowee... 2 whole years. except, not, it's been a year and 11 months and 1 week-ish since i started drawing. but who cares!!!
the beginning of this year was - how to put this delicately - Awful, lol. i started 2022 w/ the rona, which really set the tone of this whole year. it's been a bumpy, wild ride - i suppose 'highlights,' is that i got my knee surgery + got a lawyer for my disability case...? there was also that 'grand theft me' situation (THAT MADE, INCLUDING PIECES FOR SEPT OCT. A TENSE QUESTION BUT W/E!!) etc etc
my resolution for this year wasn't to draw every day, but i think i still drew quite a lot...? i shifted to ms paint-only at the tailend of 2021 and have kept it still. i've gotten into a routine of sketching n lining one day, and coloring the next... as coloring is my favorite part, lol.
while i wouldn't say 2022 was a 'bad' year overall - troublesome, for sure - re: art i am more inclined to say it was. 'bad,' in the emotional aspect. despite a lot of my ANGST over my art i continued. prevailed...!! whatever. it's hard for me to 'feel' like i've improved, but on a literal aspect... wow, look at that... whistles etc.
this year i honed in a lot more on anatomy, interaction, composition, etc. gotta draw OTP together after all, lol. for 2023, i'm aiming to get better at backgrounds and clothing...
2022 was really hard and it really sucked and i really DESPAIRED. i'm not quite.... proud of myself, in the skill aspect, but i'm proud i kept drawing no matter how awful it felt.
here's to another two years!

Reading and taking in the sunlight sounds so nice!(it's currently raining where I'm from and i miss the sun lol) But obviously what's not nice is you being woken up by your dream! and it's a valid fear no matter what! People are crazy! I hope you don't have any more dreams like that though :( The stalker stuff was great for the plot but I don't want you suffering lol And my Sunday was not too fun, my brain decided that it was the perfect time to ✨go through it✨LOL
And I definitely prefer wine! for now at least lol Sangrias are SO good so i don't blame you! I remember drinking Sangria for the first at this place in Mexico and when i tell you I was living my best life bc of that drink... I WAS! I've never heard of apple cider sangria but that sounds interesting!
It for sure would have been an interesting read! But like I said I still loved every part of it! And I don't think you mentioned that before about the show! Seems interesting!
AND IM ASSUMING THE BOXER AU WILL BE CALLED DING?! literally for whenever that comes Im so ready! Granted Im always excited when you post!
Hope that you can sleepy better soon bestie! And Hope you had a ne weekend and that the week starts off well for you!-💜
The week before I get my period (sorry that’s probs tmi) I get crazy dreams so I’m not surprised lol 😂
OH NO. The latter half of my Sunday wasn’t as good as the first half. I get the Sunday scaries or whatever they’re called real bad. So I get it. I’m sorry you were going through it :(
I love apple cider so I’m probs biased but def delicious. Way better in sept/oct/nov but I would drink it every day 😭
It is going to be called Ding hehehe I’m glad you feel that way. Protection update in a few hours 😉
Hope your brain turns off a little from yesterday and you get to read your new book!

Nature Walks
Entry Date: Sept 28th
The deer stare at me now, when I come outside. This is an improvement over the running, because it kept setting the neighbor’s dog off and if I have spend my unpaid time managing the emotions of selectively-bred aggressive brats with better insurance than me I’d kill the neighbor.
I’m not going to kill the neighbor with the loud dog.
At worse I’d try to run him out of the house.
Throw rocks at his car and leave dead birds on his doormat. Maybe dye the pool red. Harmless stuff. The crows would still get together to yell in my driveway in the mornings if I did kill him, but they’re bad judges of character. And he’s definitely got a security system wired through the house, even if the security camera on the garage is fake.
And I’m pretty sure I don’t want him dead.
Entry Date: Oct 4th
There’s a barn owl in the red oak down the street. She’s very pretty and terrifying to hear when the train yard gets going. I was tempted to scream back but I’m still not sure if the road in city limits has an HOA and it felt like an impulsive thing to get christian sworn at for. If Jersey Accent Terf Bangs doesn’t stop frowning at me whenever I walk past her front lawn I’m throwing golf balls at her new sedan.
The deer are still digging in the raised garden. There is nothing planted in the raised garden, since the spiders claimed the left corner, but their eyes flash up at me when I use the backdoor sometimes, frozen in the dirt with mud down their snouts.
I really want to ask the deer what they’re looking for, but I’m afraid one of them will answer.
Entry Date: Oct 12th
I sort of yelled at the deer last night and now I can’t talk and I’m a little convinced concerned they might have cursed me. ?
It could’ve been the fire. It was probably the fire, with the bottles I shouldn’t have melted and whatever cracked near the end that sounded like glass on a steel floor, but. I breathed in too much of the smoke and almost threw up this morning when I could manage to swallow and it was probably the fire, and I know it wasn’t.
I knocked some of the fire loose but I was wearing… At least one shoe, statistically, because I remember standing on it, but one of the neighbors were shouting a domestic disturbance through the front-facing windows but the fire was safety important
I couldn’t put the fire out, because there are wolves and bobcats and monster with sound systems and if the fire went out before the ash choked it to death I’d have to ask one of the above to kill me.
And I hadn’t heard screaming or broken glass but I was sort of desperately listening because dying for being too close to someone else’s fight is probably what’s going on my tombstone and a stalking mass caught edges from the streetlamp, just shadows and muscle and I shouted at it? I swore at it, I think.
And it was a deer, so it ran off, and now if I breathe wrong I get nauseous and my throat feels like I ate glass, and the deer thing did it to me
If I have to go ask the woods to let me eat solid foods again I think I’m just going to lay face-down in the first patch of moss I find and let the ants figure it out.
Entry Date: Oct 22nd
There was a cat today. It walked along the other side of the road and flicked its tail at me when I talked to it. It was following a pair of squirrels on a telephone wire, but stood to watch me while they hopped onto trees.
There wasn’t a collar on it’s neck but it looked at me with toddler certainty and hissed at a leaf without moving. I let it walk past me without approaching and it blinked slowly before disappearing into the woods.
It looked like a cat I knew in an apartment, when I was a kid. It killed birds when the sky was dark and lay on doormats of whoever gave him food. He let me pet him once, five or six minutes of rumbled appreciation, pushing against my hands and knees.
Then he bit me and ran off, circling around the building while I dripped blood onto a parking space. I don’t think my hand’s hurt that much, since. The lighter incident has a strong case, though.
He was a gorgeous cat.
Entry Date: Oct 25th
Pet the cat today. She has a white stomach and a fondness for teething on human nails.
Entry Date: November 3rd
Litttle drunk, i’ll be honest. it’s just dark all the time and the woods keep endless watch over a shrinking horizon and I don’t have work tomorrow  later today   fuck
Too cold out for the joggers. also the sun went down at 4 and the trees don’t bother to shuffle at night they just run with antlers and skin torn over roads, the endless parade of hesistant godkings.
Threw up on Bangs’ rosebush on the way home.

Mirror of Darkness Show
This show has been screened at several events: ■ Twisted Wonderland pop-up shop in Animate (Aug 1 - Sept 6, 2020) ■ First Anniversary livestream on Abema TV (Mar 17, 2021) ■ Halloween 2021 virtual event on Cluster (Oct 18 - Nov 18, 2021)
I’ve translated the script below ↓
                           ・━━━━✥◈✥━━━━・
Crowley: Allow me to welcome all of you who have gathered here to hear about this academy. I am the headmaster, Dire Crowley. I’m overjoyed to know that so many of you are interested in our Night Raven College. Heheh.
Now then, I will leave it to the first-years to attend to you all. Freshmen, please be very welcoming and professional with them. Alright, I will take my leave. Ah, I’m so busy, so busy!
Grim: Oi oi, the headmaster just left everything up to us and ran off somewhere.
Ace: Bleugh, I don’t wanna be here.
Deuce: C’mon, Ace. Some of these people might be new students next year. Pull yourself together!
If we get to have juniors... then we’ll finally be considered upperclassmen!
Ace: Now that you mention it... if you had a junior, then you could force them to take care of flamingo feeding duty for you! That’d be a win!
...That’s what you were imagining, right?
Deuce: Ah! Don’t act like I’m you.
Grim: But... they wouldn’t be in Heartslabyul with you guys unless the Mirror of Darkness picked it for them, right?
We’d always welcome anyone to Ramshackle! Hehe! If I get more henchmen, I could push them around everyday and make them bring me all the tuna cans I want!
Jack: Hey, Grim. You’re telling everyone too much of your internal thoughts. This is a job the Headmaster entrusted us with, so let’s do it right.
Ace: There it is—Jack’s always-on-task voice.
But anyway, you guys. The looks on your faces all scream “I don’t know anything!” but... don’t tell me—not just about Night Raven College obviously, but you don’t know about the Great Seven either?! Oi oi, I’m getting déjà vu here!
Grim: These guys are just like my henchman—they need you to walk them through everything.
Ace: Whaaat, but I’m too lazy to give the same explanation again. So anyway, Epel! You can take it from here!
Epel: Huh?! M... Er, me? I’d like to help, but... I don’t know if I’d be able to explain it right.... um... ¹
Jack: He’s stumbling right from the start... Alright, guess I’ll do it.
Night Raven College is a mage-training boarding school. There are seven dorms here based off the Great Seven, a group of powerful figures who once existed in the past. Whichever dorm you’re put in is determined by the Mirror of Darkness at the time you enroll. They say it’s chosen based on the essence of your soul.
Epel: Thank you, Jack. I’m sure all of you here must look up to the Great Seven too, and are hoping you’ll be able to get into Night Raven College as well.
Ace: Hello—? Wait, did they all fall asleep?
Sebek: What?? Oi, all of you! WAKE UP!!
Jack: Agh! Sebek! Don’t start yelling without warning us first!
Deuce: Both of you are being too loud! Everyone, I’m sorry if that startled you. Is it alright if I continue?
I’ll explain about the dorms and the Great Seven.
Heartslabyul is the dorm Ace and I are in, which is said to be founded on the severity of the Queen of Hearts. Everyone here lives by the law of the Queen of Hearts. Dorm Leader Rosehearts is very strict about the rules, but he and others like Clover and Diamond are all respectable people.
Ace: “Respectable,” huh? Deuce, that’s such a basic way to put it.
Everyone! If you end up in the same dorm as us, you better be careful. Our scaaary dorm leader will give you hell if you break even just one rule!
God, don’t you think things would’ve been better if they hadn’t kept in that aspect of the Queen of Hearts?
Epel: Um... The Queen of Hearts was also an amazing woman who reigned over a kingdom that was chaotic by law.
Grim: And so, anyone who broke those laws was said to have been put on trial and exiled from the country.
Jack: I’m part of Savanaclaw, which models the indomitable spirit of the King of Beasts. There are many students here, including Leona and Ruggie, who excel in athletics.
Which is why... I wanted so badly to have a serious fight at the Magift Tournament.
Deuce: I know exactly what that feels like!
The King of Beasts used his wit and magic power to climb his way to the top. A MAN AMONG MEN! Doesn’t he just amaze you?!
Epel: Yeah, he’s so manly and cool... isn’t he?
Grim: But ya know, the dorm leader Leona is just a do-nothing who sleeps all day.
Ace: You say that, but you never know—someday he might just knock you dead with a POW!
Next up is the dorm founded on the mercy of the Sea Witch, Octavinelle.
Jack: Octavinelle is a group of intellectuals who are always getting the highest scores on written exams. Along with the dorm leader Azul Ashengrotto, it’s full of really clever students. They also run a café called the Mostro Lounge.
Deuce: The Sea Witch lived in a grotto deep under the sea, and granting the wishes of pitiful merfolk was something she lived for.
Ace: The price was a little bit expensive, but just for that you could get anything you could ever wish for!
Epel: After that... we have Scarabia, the dorm founded in the tactical spirit of the Sorcerer of the Desert Kingdom. I hear there’s a lot of students here who are good at Astrology and Ancient Curses. The current dorm leader is Kalim Al-Asim!
Jack: The Sorcerer of the Desert Kingdom was someone who excelled at anticipating the future, often gave advice to the king, and acted as a support for the entire kingdom. That “tactical spirit” of his has definitely been passed down through this dorm, hasn’t it?
Grim: So what you mean is, they’re really smart?
Deuce: Yeah. And the people here also use their own power to strengthen themselves! You could say they climbed their way to the top too!
Ace: I could never put in so much effort and motivation just to get good at something.
M’kay, next! This is the one Epel’s part of—Pomefiore! It kinda has a sparkly, really aesthetic vibe to it.
Epel: Pomefiore models the heavy efforts of the Fairest Queen. They say the Queen was the fairest in all the land, and that she spared no effort to preserve her beauty.
I wonder if that’s why... the dorm leader Vil is so strict with both himself and all the students here.
Jack: The Queen was also supposed to have been a master at making poisons. And it’s true that a lot of the students at Pomefiore excel at potion-making too.
Grim: Next, we’ve got that guy Idia’s... Hngyi... Hngyahyde Dorm.
Ace: I-G-N-I-H-Y-D-E! Try to remember it right!!
Grim: Yeah, that! The dorm leader Idia is so rude; he’s always trying to pet my fur like I’m a cat! Me, the almighty Grim who’s going to become a powerful mage someday!
Epel: Huh...? You’re not a cat...?
Ace: Ignihyde was founded on the diligence of the Lord of the Underworld! Cater told me that a lot of the guys here are strong in magic energy engineering and digital gaming, but their lifestyles tend to be real quiet.
Jack: The Lord of the Underworld ruled over a kingdom of writhing spirits by himself. He never once neglected his job, even though anyone else would fear it. He was very dedicated and earnest, and worked without taking breaks.
Deuce: One, two, three, four, five, six... We’re at six now, so there’s only one left, right?
Ace: Last is Diasom—
Sebek: With Lord Malleus working as its dorm leader, this is Diasomnia!
Ace: BLEHJG!
Epel: Ah...
Ace: You know cutting in yelling like that scares everyone, right?!!
Anyway, you’ve been gone this whole time... Where’d you run off to?
Sebek: Yes, I was receiving a lecture about gargoyles from the Young Master.
Grim: Gar.... ghnghyle? Do those taste good?
Ace: I don’t really know what that means, but I’ll let you introduce Diasomnia ‘cause it’s too much of a hassle for me.
Sebek: Of course. This is far out of your depth anyway.
Ahem. Are you ready? HUMANS! Diasomnia, the dorm I’m part of, is founded on the nobility of the Fairy of Thorns. The current dorm leader is Lord Malleus Draconia! He is a descendant of the faeries, and ranks as one of the top five... No, the strongest magic-wielder in the world! He was born in the Valley of Thorns, his birthday is January 18th, he’s 202 cm tall, he’s part of the Gargoyle Research Society, both of his eyes are—
Ace: This isn’t a introduction on the dorm anymore; you’re just talking about the leader!!
Sebek: Hm? This is the dorm that Lord Malleus runs, so what’s so strange about talking about him?
Ace: This is obnoxious...
Deuce: He won’t listen no matter what you say, huh?
Grim: Right?
Epel: I feel like the students of Diasomnia can wield magic much better than the other dorms can.
Sebek: That is correct. The Fairy of Thorns, who lived on the Mystical Mountain², could cast magic that was extremely powerful even among the Great Seven. It’s clear that Lord Malleus is the most suited for running this dorm, isn’t it?
Epel: ...And that concludes our explanation. Everyone, thank you for listening all the way through.
Jack: Every dorm has its own set of quirks, but in the end, the one you join depends on the Mirror of Darkness. You shouldn’t worry too much about it.
Deuce: Jack’s right. No matter what dorm you get assigned to, let’s all do our best together to become powerful mages!
Ace: What’s with this beautiful ending you’re leaving off with? Well, I’m not complaining, getting some cute little freshmen around doesn’t sound too bad.
Let’s go to the next Unbirthday Party together!
Sebek: This orientation is not over until you return home safely. If anything happens, we’re the ones that will be held responsible. Do you hear that, humans? Be on your guard as you make your way back.
Grim: Next time you stop by, make sure ya don’t forget my tuna cans!
Tumblr media
1. Epel: M... Er, me?
I wasn’t able to convey this correctly, but Epel starts off by using the pronoun “Ore” (a rougher version of “me”) and then pauses to correct himself to “Boku” (which is a bit softer).
2. Mystical Mountain
It’s called the “Forbidden Mountain” in the EN dub, but the term engraved on Maleficent’s statue on Main Street is “Mystical Mountain.”

jan: starting off with this set of my favorite thai actresses!! i enjoyed making this one and the list has remained the same til this day (i have some new faves too) 🥰
feb: my very first atots set. it was truly a tale of thousand stares. i miss them so much. 💚😫 and also my bday set for win. it was so much fun to make as well. and it turned out really colorful. 😍
march: this set inspired by tkg. when i tell u i screamed when i saw the name of the poem. it’s very sarawatine. i rmr making it with all the hype of the movie coming out and then the movie never happened til november :((( but anyways i enjoyed making it. and i couldn’t post my favorite creations of march without including another set inspired by tkg with my other favorite couple. 💜 i miss wangxian so much :(
april: this set of atots parallels!! airport scene my beloved. 💘 also this set of itsay + the civil wars (i love the coloring!! maybe if i had learned to blend by then this would’ve been even better.. but i was so lazy djjdjsjs)
may: this set of tiffy outfits. miss zorzo really did that for us. 😍 and this set from last twilight in phuket. >>>>>>> ipytm tbh (i love the yellows and b&w 💛💛💛 ) and finally, this picset (my very first one i made) i like that i had no idea what was gonna happen.. i was so naive..
june: this gifset from hell. (but ok i admit it was fun making it yes i’ve lost my mind) and this one of wangxian 💖💖💖 i love love the coloring and fun fact the last gif took me about 1 hour to color (cql is sooo tough to color in general imo) i also really like this picset i made for atots week. it was so much fun to make (this was my picset era maybe i will make a comeback soon…) and of course it wouldn’t be june without a respective PRIDE set 🌈🥰 and a bi tine set of course.
july: i’m gonna say my first light on me gifset ever which was episode 4. that was the moment i was like wow i really love this drama. and got really hooked. also this soljiwan set makes me so happy idk why its so colorful and love is stored in the parallels… & for sure i enjoyed making this set of lwj/shinwoo parallels. i debated whether or not to add text on the gifs but then i realized it’s all about the body language. they’re my babies 💖. i also love this sarawatine gifset (inspired by the wonderful vikki @seanswhite)
aug: this was a hard month cause (together with july) it was my light on me era so i made so many gifsets of it. but i loved this one especially bc it was the finale. i felt like it turned out really good for closure. and of course!! my shinwoo is bad at feelings gifset 🥺🥺🥺 i miss him so muchhhh. & to conclude this month i really loved the combinations of pinks and b&w in this gifset.
sept: hands down, this taemin set. i was on a taemin marathon and missing him so much that i decided to watch all his mv’s and my brain did a thing.. like wait a minute. he’s an actual genius. he’s perfect. i also like this set of a first love story. it was sooo short but it was adorable and i’m glad we got a part 2. (I’m a huge fan of adding b&w gifs in the middle of a gifset as u can tell)
oct: this set of the tasty florida. i feel like the drama was so short lived but i really did enjoy it for the time it lasted. it was cute. 🥺💜
nov: this patpran gifset that ruined my life (it’s their song… it really is..) and this bad buddy recap gifset. i was really happy with the coloring (& blending)
dec: this danyok set. i really love the coloring and it’s my first ever gifset of them (and of many more i asume) so i feel like when we’re on the last few episodes and they’re all lovey dovey i’m gonna be looking back at the memories of yok simping for half the face of a stranger <3 also this bad buddy recap set is my favorite that i’ve done so far. i really like the blending and the coloring. 💛
tagging: @alienwlw @becomeundone @yesdramas @dramaism @dingyuxi @earthfluuke @gunsatthaphan @pranpats @seanswhite @mrdumpling @jaehwany @jendeuke only if u want to of course 🥺 & happy new year !!! 💜

hello :) i’d like to request a reading! so i’ve had a bad year and i’ve been motivated to clear out my space and get things done when summer is over can you read for how my sept-oct will go generally? (like will my efforts pay off, etc) thank you so much 🌟
Hello! Here you go:
Cards I got: Nine of pentacles, Queen of cups, The wheel of fortune, Seven of cups in reverse
While I was pulling cards the vibe was more than calm, a little bit closed off and tired. So I see in September-October you will have to take a little break and go back to some casual days, not all of your days have to be fulfilled, also I see you'll get more personal privacy. With these cards I definitely see a strong yes, the things you are doing now will pay off for sure. The carda in general have the same meaning, luxury, calmness, emotional security, good luck, karma, so I don't think there is a need to explain them separately. They together tell a story and that shows how well put together your life would be. Only with Seven of cups in reverse, I see you losing illusions and illusional ideas, you will see the real picture of yourself, people around you and life, you might be surprised since it will come off much better then you thought and imagined.
That would be it, I hope it resonates. Good luck!

Football Vs. Husband: Which Do You Know Better? | Zimbits ft. Tater, G, 1.8k
Summary: Bitty gets quizzed on two of his favourite things: Jack and...... football?
Based on the Buzzfeed video of the same name. Takes place sometime in Sept-Oct 2019. Minor spoilers for 4.25 Faber and 4.26 Check, Please! (If you can call em spoilers LOL.)
Read on Ao3
A/N: Fun fact: At the time I wrote this (2017), it was set in the “future” (2019), but now that year is literally the past for us hahahahahahskfjasldfjasldfjklaskdfj. In the fic summary I say “minor spoilers” because what I originally wrote as wish fulfillment in 2017 became canon in 2020.
Anyway, this is a near verbatim copy of Ned Fulmer getting quizzed on his wife vs football—like fr some of the dialogue is exactly the same LOL. Thanks to @smol0ctopus for the beta and the omg stream! please server for advice!<3 Any other mistakes are mine.
YouTube transcript of Football Vs. Husband (Check, Please! #151: A Falconers Special!) [Descriptive captions by biittyyreciipees, airhockeycanbeviolent, and f4lcsboy: Check, Please! Captioning Team]
Eric Hey, y’all! Didja miss me? Because I sure did miss you! Now, today’s video is a lil special. Y’all’ll see that I’ve got myself some lovely guests here from Providence’s own Falconers team. (gestures towards Jack and Tater) Say hi guys!
Tater (waves) Hi!
Jack (single nod, smiles) Hello.
Eric I’ve got here regular guest and my husband, Jack Zimermann, and his teammate, Alexei Mashkov—
Tater But you call me Tater!
Eric (laughs) But we call him Tater! Tater, why don’t you explain what’ll happen here today?
Tater Is collaboration with Falcs TV! We had special tournament to see if players knows their SOAPs more than favorite thing.
ONSCREEN CAPTION SOAPs = Significant Others And Partners, for all y’all non-hockey fans out there! Click here (highlighted annotation inserted) to watch the tournament on the Falconer’s official website or check this video’s description!
Eric I had me such a great time over on Falcs TV with Jack that I wanted to share the fun with y’all here!
Tater (nods) Zimmboni crush everyone in tournament!
ONSCREEN CAPTION “Zimmboni” is Jack’s hockey nickname, like “Tater” is for Alexei. Everyone on the team has one! In fact, I have one too: Bitty! But Alexei likes to call me “B”.
Jack (shrugs, gives small smile) I know history. I know my husband.
Eric (laughs, blushes)
Tater Now, is time to see if B know Zimmboni just as much!
Eric I’m feelin’ pretty confident that I do. What do you think, sweetpea?
Jack I think Bits knows me better than myself, to be honest.
Eric Jack! (blushing again)
Tater Yes, yes, is very cute! But I’m want to ask questions now, yes?
Eric (turns to camera) Now, I tried to get ‘em to quiz me on baking—because y’all and your mama know that I love it—but Jack here insisted that I get asked about football instead.
Jack Baking’s too easy. I figured you’d appreciate the challenge. You know a lot about American football, eh?
Eric (rolls eyes) “American football”—I know y’all in Canada just call it football too! Now, I’d argue, but that’ll take up the rest of this video, so I guess it’s time to get to the quiz!
Tater Yes!
(video transition with dramatic music)
Tater (holds up stack of cards in hands) Here, I’m hold questions about NFL and college football, plus questions about Zimmboni for B to answer. Like during Falcs’ tournament, I’m ask SOAP about their favorite subject first, then ask about their partner. B, is ready?
Eric As I’ll ever be!
Jack Gonna crush it, Bits.
Eric Let’s hope so, sweetheart.
Tater Will be good, B, I’m sure! Question one, name five offensive positions in the NFL.
Eric Lord, how easy—quarterback, running back, wide receiver, offensive tackle, tight end.
ONSCREEN CAPTION Score: 5/5
Tater See, B! You be fine! Name five of Zimmboni’s favourite foods.
Eric Ooh, alright. So PB&J sandwiches, chicken tenders... scrambled eggs, uh, cassoulet... (Caption Note: French food pronunciation is not butchered, because food)
ONSCREEN CAPTION Score: 4/5
Tater One more, B.
Eric Hm, let’s see—
Tater (snickers) Remember this easiest question in stack.
Eric Oh, hush, you.
Jack Bits? Maybe a dessert?
Eric (hits head with base of palm) Oh, goodness me, right! Maple sugar crusted apple pie.
ONSCREEN CAPTION Score: 5/5
Tater (nods) Yes. Okay, how many minutes in football quarter?
ONSCREEN CAPTION Answer: Quarters in the NFL and NCAA football are 15 minutes.
Eric 15 minutes.
Tater How long is Zimmboni’s pre-game ritual?
ONSCREEN CAPTION Answer: 15 minutes max. Like all athletes, hockey players have specific rituals before their games.
Eric About thirty minutes?
Tater (whooping laughter) 15 minutes, max.
Jack (laughs)
Eric (gasps, shakes head) That is not true, that can not be true! Honey, I’ve seen you take 15 minutes making your pre-game PBJ sandwiches. (scoffs)
Jack (makes a face)
Tater Sorry, B. Must give big zero for that question.
Eric (rolls eyes) Hmph!
Tater B, you get 20 seconds—name as many starting quarterbacks in the NFL as possible. Ready, set, go!
Eric Matt Ryan, Aaron Rodgers, Josh Allen, Philip Rivers, Tom Brady—ugh—Baker Mayfield, Derek Carr, Carson Palmer.
ONSCREEN CAPTION Score: 8
Tater Have 10 seconds, name as many as Zimmboni’s lineys when he finally move to first line.
ONSCREEN CAPTION Lineys = Hockey linemates. Fun fact: Jack moved from third to first line during his first season in the Falcs back in 2015!
Eric (opens mouth)
Tater But! Must name them by nickname!
Eric (single nod, determined expression)
Tater Okay? Ready, set, go!
Eric Alright so excluding Jack, that’ll be you, Tater, then we got Marty, Thirdy, Guy, and Snowy if you count the goalies!
Tater (solemnly nods) Always count goalies!
Eric Then that’s five for five. Gettin’ a lil easy there!
ONSCREEN CAPTION Score: 5/5
Tater Haha! Okay, who are on cover of Sports Illustrated for this season’s NFL and college previews?
ONSCREEN CAPTION Answer: Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. were on the cover for the NFL preview. Trevor Lawrence was on the cover for the college preview.
Eric Oh, Coach and I were just talkin’ about this! I know the NFL preview was Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry, but the college preview... (brief pause, placing chin on fist contemplatively) I think it’s Trevor Lawrence?
Tater Correct! What magazine cover did Zimmboni appear on first?
ONSCREEN CAPTION Answer: Trick question! Jack’s first ever appearance on a magazine cover was not as a hockey player. He first appeared on People Magazine as a baby with his parents, Robert “Bad bob” Zimmermann and Alicia Zimmermann.
Eric Can I ask a question?
Tater ...no.
Eric Well, shoot, alright. If you mean his first cover as an athlete, I’ll say Sports Illustrated, but if you mean his first one ever I think it’s People Magazine when he was a baby.
Tater (censored beep) Wow!
Jack (raises eyebrows) You remember that?
Eric Well, you told me! And Alicia did show me when we visited for Christmas one year. (smug smirk)
Jack (covers face in hand, exasperated sigh) Of course she did.
Tater Next question! How many Super Bowl rings does Tom Brady have?
Eric Oh goodness. I think it’s five?
Tater Six!
Eric What?
Tater Is six!
Eric (groans) Of course it’s six. Whatever, it’s fine, I try not to think about Tom Brady anyway. I don’t mind getting this one wrong. In fact, I’m kinda glad because I certainly don’t care for the man. Like, who—
Jack Bits. We’re in the middle of a game right now?
Eric (blushes) Oh, right.
Tater It’s alright, B, haha. But we move on with game now, yes? (single nod) Now, how many rings Zimmboni normally wear?
ONSCREEN CAPTION Answer: 1.
Eric One! He usually just wears his wedding ring, but today he’s got his 2016 Stanley ring! Wanna show it off, honey?
Jack (sheepishly holds up hands to show the two rings)
ONSCREEN CAPTION Fun fact: The team who wins the Stanley Cup get matching rings. Jack got his first one when the Falcs won the Cup in 2016!
Tater Is tough one now: How many times have the Atlanta Falcons made the playoffs?
ONSCREEN CAPTION Answer: 14.
Eric (sighs) Oh Lordy, that's hard. Alright, so by the time I was born they were at five so— (voice continues in fast forward) —they did in ‘98, then... ‘02? After was 2004, not 2005, or ‘06... so the next one was 2008. Then there was that streak from 2010 to 2012. Then the next one was 2016, and then ‘17. Not ‘18 and ‘19. So that’s... (begins to count on fingers)
Tater (back to regular speed, looking impressed) You have answer, B?
Eric I'm gonna go with fourteen as of this year.
Tater (censored beep)!!!
Eric (laughs)
Jack (censored beep), Bittle.
Tater Is amazing! You have both number and years!
Eric I’m Southern, and my daddy’s a football coach. (shrugs) Can’t help it!
Jack (chuckles) This is why I wanted you to answer stuff about the football instead of baking.
Eric (rolls eyes, swats Jack’s arm) Oh, this boy.
Tater Next question! What is most number of times Zimmboni fight in one season?
ONSCREEN CAPTION Answer: 3 fights.
Eric Ooh, shoot. I should know this one too, huh? Okay, so his first season he only got in one fight— (voice continues in fast forward) —and second season was also one, I think. After that, uhh, I think he finally got in two. Last year was three maybe? And this season hasn’t even started. But last year? Was it three? I don’t quite—hm.
Tater (back to regular speed) Your answer, B?
Eric I’m gonna go with three fights for last season.
Tater (shaking his head)
Jack What did I say?
Tater (censored beep) Is correct. (huffs) What year did Falcons join the NFL?
ONSCREEN CAPTION Answer: 1965.
Eric Uhhh, oh goodness, I know Coach told me this at some point... (pause) I think it was 1965?
Tater Correct! What year Zimmboni first try skating?
ONSCREEN CAPTION Answer: 1992. Fun fact: Bad Bob had Jack skating as soon as Jack could walk!
Eric Skating, huh? ‘Cause I’ll bet the son of Bad Bob tried on his first skates before he even turned one, huh? (smiles cheekily)
Jack (nudges with elbow, gives Eric a small smile) Not the question.
Eric Oh alright, not the question. Hmm, I know it was before you turned three so, I’ll say... (drawling out answer) nineteen-ninety... two?
Tater (throws cards out of hand, shaking his head) Is correct again!
Eric Oh my god!
(high pitched sound as Eric fist pumps the air)
Jack (laughs, bringing an arm around Eric before kissing his cheek)
Tater B, I'm frustrate to say you know Zimmboni as much as you know football.
ONSCREEN CAPTION FINAL SCORE: Football = 6, Husband = 6. T I E ! ! !
Jack Knew it. Told you so, Bits.
Eric That sounds like a chirp, and I will not have that on my vlog, Mr. Zimmermann. So with that, I guess we’re done! (looks towards camera, claps once) Well, that about does it for today’s video! Thank you so much to my special guests, Providence Falconers’ Jack Zimermann and Alexei Mashkov, for joining me today. (gestures towards Jack and Tater)
Tater (nods with a wide smile) Thanks for having us, B!
Jack (smiles and nods) Always great to be here.
Eric Be sure to check out the Falcs TV videos too! Link in the description or right over here! (points to space, highlighted annotation inserted) And thanks for tuning in! Next week, I’ll have a new video for y’all on the best ways to add protein to your favourite sandwiches.
(Eric, Jack, and Tater wave at the camera)
Eric Bye, y’all! See ya next time!

Hej 2021!
I cant describe how 2020 feels in one word. So many things happened, so unpredictable. However, one thing that I really be grateful for: Thanks God, I survived. I able to finish this year with alive, beside every rocks that I’ve got this year.
From the beginning of the year, I was overwhelmed with my future path, either getting into master or having a dream job. Then, it continued by my worries about the future since Covid19 broke all the plans. Until suddenly God led me into a new job. On that day, I was having rustle in my gut, told me that it would be my dream job. After waiting for the long run, I was in. Worked calmly & peacefully in the 1st month. And well, it’d changed, something trigger my mental health and I lost my self. An identity crisis. Until I write this post, I am still having anxiety disorder through the job. Funny isn’t it?
Well, some points that I wanna recap through my journey in 2020, and I hope these will be precious lesson to my life ahead.
Too much worry about the future. Well, that’s no wrong to be prepared about the future. But I admit that I was a fool. I really worry about my future, I felt hopeless & worthless. I am too naive, thinking that our sustenance only could be achieved by working on 9-5 job. And yeah, I was feel sooo miserable as human being. I even compelled to God as if I can’t get 9-5 job, I would be the most pathetic person on the earth. And now, He slammed me over my face. He gave me what I want, but it’s out of my expectation. So yeah, I would never, never again to compel my hope to uncertain things. Only him who knew what the best story that I must walk in.
Discover my self: fear & anxiety. Another thing that I discovered about my inner self: I can’t resist if anyone scolded me. I thought  that I just afraid when my dad mad at me before, but not just my dad. When people around me show theirs madness through me, i will easily triggered. My brain will automatically give an alert & decide to avoid the person. I dunno why my thinking mechanism turn out like this. So, in this year, I met with a boss who crazy about perfectionism. She will mad if something not equal as her standard. And yeah, as a newbie, I made many mistakes. Until one day, she mad at me and scolded me harshly. I dunno why every time she labelled me in a hector way, my life bubble suddenly ‘feel’ as if  her words become true. Then, as you might expect, I enter vicious circle, that I can’t perform well because I am too afraid to her. The peak is around Sept - Oct, when I guessed I will be cut off because I couldn’t perform. At that time I really really afraid to her, can you imagine how big my fear is? The feeling is such fear to be murdered or beaten up by that person. I have had high intensity of anxiety disorder: I can’t take a nap if there is sun light outta there because my brain activated its alert system to stay guard as it’s work hours. If I try to get a nap, close my eyes, my heart will beat rapidly and the scolding scene will play in my brain.  In addition, I  woke up in 3 AM all of sudden, with a fast beating heart, and stay awake.  I also got my first panic attack, where my brain was dysfunction for a moment. All of these become exacerbate as my self which crazy over efficiency. In one time, I had a suicidal though too, I hoped that I get infected by the virus, in order to end this hell. I am tired, I asked internally: why I am very scare to that person? Why I scare to a human as that much? One thing that I learned, I will get triggered when some one scolded me. I am struggle with overthinking, anxiety, and also my own character as eficiency crazy. I know that I must take control of it, but it not an easy process, right? I must learn how to let it go, how to f*uck i off from my mind, in order to unwiring this paralyzed thought.
Go to Psychologist for 1st time, being vulnerable. Meanwhile my anxiety was high, I blamed my self that I can’t good enough. Why I couldn’t perform, why my fear is very irrational, why and why. I called my friends almost every night, I griped so much to release my anxiety. I even tried to open talk to my parents, which I never done before ever in my life. I really need a help from people, I felt that I am disoriented at that time, and at the end, I tried to visit a psychologist. Spilled out of my emotions. One thing that her suggestion that I marked up, P: What the worst possibility if you make mistake again?; M: I will be fired; P: And what you might feeling if it happened?; M: I relief, I will free from all of these; P: See? you will be ok and still breathing Vi ... At this point, I realized that we can’t really stand alone in our life. We need people, we need their perspectives to see logically in our matters. Sometimes we are too focus at our problem, and can’t analyse clearly how to solve it. Moreover, the best healer in our life is only God, and our parents. Parents & home, are the best thing that I ever had in my life. By only feeling their existence, I get less anxious. Sometimes I regret, why I just realize their importance in my mid 20s, and wasting them in my college year. Regardless all these bad things, surprisingly, my communication with my day has became better. Out bonding get thighter, thanks God..
What is the purpose of our life? What so special about our achievements? After become anxious every time - (the demon is still here, now) - I reached in one point: why I am so screw up? Why my job really affected all of my life, besides there are more joyous things that I could find? Why I am always focus in a bad parts? I am really tired with my demon thought. What’s wrong with me?
Well, that’s a lot happened during my 2020. I am not sure what I will face in the next months, but I just hope: I want to be mindful to live my live, be more conscious, and bring back ‘the old me’.

Korean Skincare Routine?
Hellowww!!!
What is up?! :D
IT HAS BEEN A LONG WHILE! because I have nothing better to do (because I don’t have a job, partially because of the pandemic) I thought of uploading here to practice my writing skills.
My skin has been getting a lot of acne and pimple breakouts most likely because of the masks that we have been wearing (even though they’re disposable), and let’s be honest... we are too lazy sometimes wash our faces or even take a bath (hahaha). Well, I felt bad for my face, I’m a 26 year old with combination to oily skin. I thought once you turn 20 or 21 your face or hormones will be balance or something. Well not for me I still get a lot of acne or pimples. My skin is so random it would be clear then after a few months it would have lots of breakouts :|
I been watching Korean Series because I am heartbroken (HAHAHA, I am literally, My 3 year and 5 months relationship ended during the quarantine. Another story for another blog. Anyway...) When watching Korean Series you can’t help but admire their skin. After watching “What is wrong with Secretary Kim” I wanted to try my luck with following a “Korean Skin Care Routine”, I always wanted to purchase a complete set for skincare but it’s too expensive and I’m stingy (LOL). So I’ve done my research and came across a post by Cosmopolitan
 https://www.cosmopolitan.com/uk/beauty-hair/beauty-trends/a42942/korean-skincare-routine-explained/
Soo.. Join me in my skin journey:

Step 6 - Eyecream (I don’t use one, I know it’s bad)
Step 7 - Moisturiser (Olay’s Natural White Light all in one fairness day cream)
Step 8 - Sunscreen (Face Republic’s Super Screen Sun Gel SPF 50+, costs  ‎₱499.00 for 50 ml)
NIGHT ROUTINE:
Step 1 -  Oil-based Cleanse  ( I literally use Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, I rub gently on my face around 10-15 mins depending if i have make up or if I’m trying to unclog my pores. Then I take my time in washing my fash with a damp reusable cotton pad I bought from shopee)
Step 2 - Double Cleansing ( Pond’s Clear Solutions AntiBacterial + Clarity + Oil Control, for some odd reason this is the only Pond’s facial cleanser that my skin won’t react badly)
Step 3 - Exfoliate ( it said atleast 1-3 times within a week, since my face it really oily I will be exfoliating every MWF. I have this brush I bought from Miniso not the automatic it has the rubber side and the soft bristel. I use the rubber side during the Oil Cleanse)
Step 4 - Toner
Step 5 - Essense
Step 6 - Ampoule
Step 7 - Serum (Garnier Light Complete Night Yoghurt Sleeping Mask,I don’t have any other serums avail but I use this instead)
Step 8 - Sheet Mask ( same as exfoliate I read it would be better if you do it 1-3 times a week but I don’t have them some on hand hahaha)
Step 9 - Eyecream
Step 10 - Moisturiser
One thing to note is that when I apply the products I leave like 30 seconds in between before I apply the next and I used my hand and I pat the product (Toner and Essense) on my face not rub.
Here is an update for all y’all (DAY 3 Skin Update) :
Tumblr media
Reflection: I felt that my face calmed down a bit. Oh and I’m making sure that I drink loads of water. I’m looking forward to seeing if there is any improvement no new breakouts so that's good :)

Griffin Dunne: Who’s That Man? (article from ARENA magazine, Sept/Oct 1987)
Double Exposure: The $4.5 million it took to make Martin Scorsese’s black comedy After Hours and the twitchily neurotic lead performance were both the work of the same man, hybrid movie producer and actor whose next assignments involve the likes of Sidney Lumet and Madonna. David Keeps spends some after After Hours hours with Griffin Dunne.
Griffin Dunne, leading man to Madonna in the soon-come Who’s That Girl, is not the sort of actor who swoops into a photo session with an entourage of managers, publicists and gofers. He enters alone, armed with a briefcase full of business pertaining to the next three or four films he will produce, and introduces himself with a winning humility and, on this particularly sweltering Manhattan afternoon, a perfectly reasonable request for a Budweiser. He graciously and gracefully agrees to a quick bit of barbering and slips into samples from Paul Smith’s autumn collection -- clothes that look very roomy on his slight five-foot-seven frame -- without a fuss. “Are you sure these weren’t for David Byrne,” he jokes. Griffin Dunne is one cool character.
The same can not be said for the neurotic yuppies he’s portrayed in After Hours and Almost You, two critically acclaimed films that were released back-to-back in Britain and helped to establish him as the archetypal Manhattan man. “That’s a coincidence,” he explains over breakfast at a Greenwich Village eaterie a few blocks from his home. “The pictures were actually filmed a couple of years, but I guess if you looked at them as a double-header, you’d see similarities because the main character is New York. One thing I have noticed is that the guy I’m playing always wears a blazer. I’ve got to be careful about what I do next. Those jaded laconic New York type roles are creeping up on me,” he continues, his almost-black eyes widening as his voice rises in mock terror. “I may never work again and die a pauper because these two pictures are so much alike!”
Now there’s an unlikely prospect. Having successfully produced Chilly Scenes of Winter, John Sayles’ Baby It’s You and Martin Scorsese’s After Hours, Griffin Dunne is in the unique position of being able to pay the bills and choose his acting roles carefully or develop properties for himself. The latter is an option he has exercised only once (After Hours), the former is an admitted luxury. “The problem with success is, the more successful you become, the more careful and calculating you have to be. While I dread being an actor and never knowing where my next job will be coming from, there was a great freedom in going from one stupid comedy into a play in some no-name theatre down on Pitt Street in lower East Siobokia. I get sent a lot of scripts as a producer and I don’t want to spend my time looking for parts for myself. I have an agent to do that. But that still doesn’t give me the opportunity to pick up the phone and say ‘Get me a script that is completely different from anything I’ve ever done, and I want to start working Wednesday’. “
There was a time when the very prospect of working in films - as an actor or a producer - was something to be avoided. Born in New York City on June 8, 1955 to actress Ellen Griffin Dunne and Dominick Dunne, who evolved from a television stage manager to a producer and now, a writer for Vanity Fair, Griffin was raised in Los Angeles amongst the privileged sons and daughters of Hollywood. He attended a pre-preparatory school at age 11. “All boys. You wore a coat and tie and got little swats if you got out of line. It was called Fay School,” he recalls with a shudder. “It was a bitch to say ‘I go to Fay School’.” He turns his head to the side to improvise a dialogue and with a sneer asks himself sarcastically, “How’s Fay?” “Fine thank you,” he mumbles, suitably humiliated. In his final year it became his job to order films for school entertainments. His very appropriate choice was Lindsay Anderson’s public school drama If... “It was a real underground thing. The attendance rate was incredible. They were hanging off the rafters. If you know the picture you know it takes them forever to kill those fucking teachers!”
The Fountain Valley school in Colorado proved a more nurturing atmosphere for the lad. Influenced by his uncle and aunt (the literary lions John Gregory Dunne and Joan Didion), Griffin thought he would become a writer. “I just knew that film business was the last thing on earth I was going to be in. It’s like if your father goes to work in a car factory in Detroit, the last thing you want to do is go into the automobile business. I didn’t sit in judgement of Peter Benchley’s (OP NOTE: author of Jaws) drinking habits, but it was just too close to me. I was really verbal about it. Openly vitriolic, I would never be in show biz. I said that right up until a friend talked me into auditioning for this play.”
That was Edward Albee’s The Zoo Story and Griffin knew instinctively that he was the best man for the job. “Somehow I just knew I could say these lines better than anyone else. It was like being the only one in that room who spoke that particular language.” An actor was born and a bullshit artist began to operate. “I was the guy who ran the drama club, the art paper, the student council planning board. Teachers treated me like an adult, they really thought I was going places. They said ‘You’re not like the other students.’ I was, of course, a source of total disappointment, because I was exactly like the other students. I would get high and take the car off campus and try to get laid at every possible moment as soon as their back was turned.”
Then, just as he was about to make a dramatic triumph playing Iago in Othello, he was busted. “Got caught smoking a little hash,” he winces. “All that was really there was what was in my lungs and it just trailed out of my mouth as I denied what was happening. And the teacher did not get a contact high and forget what he was doing. What they were saying was, ‘We’re going to change the rest of your life for that amount of smoke in your lungs’.” He was sent packing, forced to face up to parents who were “grief stricken”, he says with a comic frown, “chopped off at the knees.” Convincing the school authorities in a brilliant final thespian act that he needed to take the bus home in order to have time to think about his misdeeds, he hit the highway and hitchhiked home.
The odyssey that followed could’ve been a foreshadowing of the hassles that befell him as the stranger-in-SoHo in After Hours. “I was very worried about getting into any more trouble. And every car I got in was the most troublesome, criminal car. One guy would be driving a huge Cadillac convertible that he’d bought with a bad cheque. Another guy was AWOL from the army and there was this kid who’d just left ‘Juvie’ (Juvenile Hall) who was only a year younger than me, but also about four feet shorter. We’d spend a good deal of the time daring him to do things like climb out of the hood of the car to straighten out the antenna as we were crossing the desert. As soon as he got out there the driver would floor it, going about 95 miles an hour and swerving to throw him off. I thought, ‘OK drug possession, hot car, and manslaughter, all on the way home. Look at it this way, Mom, Dad, I was only kicked out of school for smoking hash!”
He lived in Los Angeles for the last gasp of his teenage years, working in a bookstore and as a shipping clerk for a cooking utensils firm, while going for auditions that were few and far between. After a few small roles on TV, he moved to New York to study at the Neighborhood Playhouse, where, ironically, in the days before Dustin Hoffman, Griffin’s father had left his studies when he was told that he was too short to be a leading man. Though Griffin was spared the same advice, he worked more steadily in the restaurant trade - even selling popcorn at the candy counter of Radio City Music Hall - than he did in the theatre. Then he met Amy Robinson and Mark Metcalf (OP NOTE: misprinted with an e), two equally frustrated, equally unemployed actors, and the trio decided to become producers.
(OP NOTE: Since Dunne, Robinson, and Metcalf were/are baseball fans, the original production company’s name was Triple Play Productions. When Metcalf left to focus on his acting, the company was renamed Double Play Productions).
“We went out to Cambridge and met Ann Beattie, who had written Chilly Scenes of Winter and she said it was like three of her characters walked into her living room.” Not surprisingly she allowed them to buy the rights for a film version at a very reasonable price. At age 23, Griffin Dunne had become a producer and had his first property. The trio turned the process of pitching the project to studios into an acting exercise. “It was exactly like a performance, but it was easier than going in on an audition. Here I had something tangible to sell, a book that I was passionate about. It’s hard to do that about yourself. What do you say? ‘Look at this interesting aspect of me. Then if you shade it with these particular attitudes I look like this!’ I wouldn’t want to see anybody do that.”
First released as Head Over Heels, and re-released more successfully in 1982 under the author’s original title, Chilly Scenes of Winter set the stage for the fledgling producer’s next triumph, John Sayles’ Baby It’s You, which introduced Rosanna Arquette and Vincent Spano to a large and appreciative audience of young filmgoers. In the meantime Dunne had appendaged several screen acting credits to his dossier, largely of the messenger boy variety.
“I’ve passed a ton of envelopes,” he laughs. “In this one film, The Fan (a potboiler starring Lauren Bacall as the intended victim of an overwrought admirer) I played a stage manager who was to hand a letter the killer gave me to Maureen Stapleton. The letter read ‘I’m going to kill you, I’m going to kill you,’ and sure enough he does. So they spend the rest of the movie looking for the killer instead of asking me for a description. When I told the director, he said ‘Yeah, well, fine, can we just shoot the scene please?’ So I just couldn’t resist on one take. I went up to Miss Stapleton and I said, ‘Here’s a letter from the killer -- oops! -- I mean the man outside’.”
He was able to use his comic gifts more successfully playing the sidekick role, “the very dead one” in An American Werewolf in London (OP NOTE: Title misprinted without the ‘An’) and the clean-cut brother of a gangster in Johnny Dangerously, “a big silly comedy.” Then a script crossed his desk which he simply could not ignore, for it contained all the elements he looked for in a film as both a producer and an actor. It was called After Hours, and it was the tale of a lonely word processor who meets a beautiful girl, loses her, loses his money and his house-keys and spends the rest of his evening on the run from assorted temptresses and loonies in the lofts and streets of New York’s SoHo.
Griffin Dunne was no stranger to the inherent weirdness of such a scenario. “Last weekend I was out of town and a friend was in my apartment. I said don’t use the bottom lock. She did, and so I was locked out of my own apartment. I called my neighbors to let me in, but they were locked out of their apartment too. I found that out from the neighbors below. The owners are from Japan and they’re coming to get their apartment from me. I’ve now been through so many locks it looks like a Uzi got at the door. The locksmith is now an old friend of mine. I have the worst time with keys. I believe the first stage of manhood is when you live on your own and you’re given this set of keys. I’ve been through so many keys. They just leap out of my pocket!”
Griffin Dunne became After Hours’ hapless anti-hero Paul Hackett and his run-ragged energy leaped off the screen. Despite the fact that the entire film was shot at night, director Scorsese demanded that he remain celibate during the course of the shoot. For added punishment, Dunne himself also acted as the film’s producer: “As an actor your job is not to have distractions and be in a loose state where, when things are thrown at you, you can react accordingly. As a producer your job is to constantly anticipate problems, disasters, flare-ups, fiascoes. You’re in a constant state of tension. You have this little rubber ball with spikes sticking out of it in the pit of your stomach. In After Hours if there were times when it was five in the morning and I was starting to run out of anxiety adrenaline, I could think of how much the picture was going over-budget and I would suddenly get this hollow look in my eyes, my eyebrows would start creeping up on my forehead and I was ready to roll! But I never as an actor looked at the director and thought, ‘Gee, he’s shooting too much film, I must tell him to stop.’”
Though After Hours was a huge critical and commercial success, it pointed out some rather disheartening facts about the American film industry. “People are so obsessed with how much pictures cost. It really pisses me off,” he says with a furrow of the brow that makes you an instant sympathizer. “All anybody talks about with After Hours is that we made it for $4.5 million.(OP NOTE: $4.5 million in 1985 would be about $10.8 million in 2020) Who cares? Is it a good movie? Is it a bad movie? For some reason English films have avoided that. Probably because they were made with pounds instead of dollars and the critics are too lazy to figure out the currency conversion.”
Now he’s on a roll and it becomes quite clear that Griffin Dunne, as an artist and as a businessman, cares about the cinema passionately. “There are a lot of [OP NOTE: misprinted as off] young filmmakers trying to get off the ground here. It’s treated so condescendingly,” he splutters. “Those kids made that Personal Art film. Art film is a bad word for everybody - it’s a personal film. Or it’s an independent film, which must mean it’s personal. ‘Those kids made that picture and just look what they did. And their grandmother gave them $2.5 million for that?’ I don’t think it was their grandmother,” he continues with a lethal iciness. “I think they went to a major financing entity and they got the money, it’s playing in theatres now. GO SEE THE GODDAMNED MOVIE!”
(OP NOTE: Sir, this is a Wendy’s. All joking aside, I would love to hear the off-the-record version of this rant)
All of this seems particularly annoying to a man like Griffin Dunne because he’s proved that it can be done. “It’s just treated like it’s so cute. Now it’s possible to make films like Mona Lisa, Withnail and I or one of Stephen Frears’ movies in the States. There’s a lot more avenues of finance and they’ve figured out ways of distributing movies where they actually make serious money and it’s easier for people to get their money back on videocassettes and all the other rights. What we’re having a little bit of a problem with is the material itself. How do you find a script that doesn’t reek of being an Independent Movie?”
In Adam Brooks’ Almost You, which was written as a vehicle for Dunne and his then-girlfriend Brooke Adams, he found exactly that. An offbeat comedy about an adulterous husband, the film was warmly received in Britain after having been crucified by the American press. (OP NOTE: As someone who enjoyed that movie, I think the reason for that is because British audiences are more comfortable with unlikable or dysfunctional protagonists than American audiences. Also, this was the Reagan era with traditional values and all) “I found the character very touching and pathetic, but when it came out you would have thought I was a war criminal. An immoral louse. The worst of it was they would never say my character’s name.  They would say ‘Griffin Dunne is a duplicitous, weak-willed human being!’ People fuck around on their wives, what can I say? The way people went on, because I fooled around when my wife was in a wheelchair, it was like one of those Reefer Madness kind of movies. Like I was condoning it,” he says, lapsing into a sinister’s narrator voice, “C’mon kids, go out and smoke heroin. And while you’re there get married and fool around on your wife who’s in a wheelchair. Come with me to...THE MOVIES!”
His next screen appearance should raise the stakes considerably higher and may establish Griffin Dunne as a solidly commercial leading man in romantic comedies. “I’d known about the script for years,” he says of Who’s That Girl. “It was the first screwball comedy I’d read that wasn’t a rip-off or a parody . The characters were really contemporary. Over the years I just slowly watched it get put together, slowly, slowly coming around to me. I had a feeling it was going to work out and I have that feeling very rarely.” It’s the story of one Loudon Trott, the standard “uptight kind of guy” whose world is thrown into utter chaos by the appearance of a dizzy but dazzling vixen. “I’m one of those inside-the-little-globe-there’s-a-madman-dying-to-break-out characters. But I was going as much against the nitwit-nerd as possible. I wanted to wear the best suit I could find. I look unlike anything I’ve ever looked before. You don’t wake up with hair like what I’ve got in this picture. I don’t even know what the hell I look like.”
The vixen is, of course, played by Madonna. “It was externally pretty crazy,” he says of the shoot. “A lot of paparazzi and fans. I guess for my survival I just shut it out. It didn’t bother her, so why should it bother me? If it bothered me it would show on the screen, but nobody would say, ‘Gee, he doesn’t seem to be there right now, it must be the fans.’” He laughs at the very thought of it. “I’ll fight for a disclaimer at the end of the picture!”
He’ll have to juggle his next acting assignment between efforts as a producer. Running On Empty, the coming-of-age story of the son of Sixties dissidents living on the lam, is set to be directed by Sidney Lumet with River Phoenix in the leading role and Robin Williams has been signed as the lead for a Disney-financed version of the stage comedy The Foreigner.
[OP NOTE: While Running on Empty was eventually released in 1988, garnering Phoenix a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Golden Globes, The Foreigner never materialized. I’m sure there’s some amazing stories that have yet come to light on the latter].
And industrious though he may seem, Dunne admits that he’s really good at not working, too. “It’s a talent that I’ve evolved over the past year or so. When I’m not working it never crosses my mind. I’m into maps. I’ll chart a trip and get a really good radio in the car, record a lot of tapes and hit the road. I’m really good at getting out of town and going to the beach. My problem has been collecting a lot of things over the years, but I’ve lived in sublets for the past 11 years, so I haven’t been able to settle into any pattern yet. Now that I’m moving into my own place, I’m glad. I’ll have people over so they can admire my spoon collection from my various journeys and I’ll even have shows. I will promise to bore them senseless with my passions.”
It’s unlikely he’ll be able to make the same claim in a professional capacity; his involvement on both sides of the camera and casting office have certainly produced an exemplary cross-breed of moviemaking professional, one that box office superstars-cum-executive producers of their own vanity projects could most certainly learn from. “One of the things I like about being a producer,” Dunne explains, “is that it’s opened me up on how to read a script. I like to think of the whole picture now, not just my role.” But having an awareness of what makes a film succeed in an increasingly byzantine business has not dulled his enthusiasm for acting, nor dimmed his onscreen spark. “It still is fun,” he demurs. “It should always be fun to get paid for taking fencing lessons.”
Always a wit, Griffin Dunne does seem most comfortable making a joke, even if it is at his own expense. Asked which of his screen characters he’d feel closest kinship to in real life, he deadpans, “I use so much of myself in them that I can’t imagine wanting to hang out with any of them.” And he’s equally nonplussed about his reputation as an independent force in the motion picture industry. The man simply has taste and if he likes to wear as many different hats as he can in this business, well, that’s his business - and he’s certainly very modest about his accomplishments.
“It’s difficult,” he concludes. “for me to say ‘I’m a rebel. I’m a maverick’ and put on little cowboy hats and stroll out of here into the sunset.” Especially, we both agree with a laugh, since it’s not even high noon yet.
