matchstick

cassidy 'matchstick' stone is a girl who was born and raised in the worst part of a terrible city.

as a toddler, she developed pyrokinesis; the only member of her family to do so since her great grandparents.

it always seemed to be one thing after another with her family (two parents and three siblings), things like being robbed or evicted, her parents both losing their jobs more than once, the bathroom flooding or a tree falling through their porch railing. they seemed riddled with terrible luck - and whether it was a product of living in the guts of void city, or just some kind of generational curse, it seemed never ending.

between the ages of 12-13, cassidy loses her leg to an infection after cutting herself at the park (delirious with fever, she'd thought to burn the infection out at the source, and barely left anything for the doctors to salvage.) and then loses her oldest brother in a shootout at his job.

after her schoolmate/tutor ronnie dies, she drops out of high school - not seeing the point in even trying anymore. whenever she passes by one of his memorials, she can't bring herself to look at the photos, but she always makes sure the candles are lit.

by this stage of her life, cassidy was so fucking tired of feeling and being helpless. it still always seemed like one thing after another with her family and it wasn't fair, they were good people, they didn't deserve the endless shit void city dumped on them.

she snaps when she's seventeen, after her sister came home bruised and crying, again. realising that the only thing stopping her from taking matters into her own hands was the law (which meant fuck all in The Guts), she tracked down her sisters boyfriend and beat him to death with a pipe she'd found on the way there.

she goes home afterwards to pack a bag and grab all the cash she'd earned doing stupid party entertainment gigs, and only sticks around long enough to say goodbye to her family. she doesn't want them to get in trouble if the cops do miraculously come looking for her, she loves them too much to even ask them lie for her.

she sends them money when she can, taking jobs where she can - theft, drug running, info gathering, intimidation visits. anything she can get her hands on really. she learns a lot of skills and makes a lot of allies in this time.

she earns the nickname 'matchstick' from her habit of burning evidence before the cops can find anything, and her budding talent with explosives (funnily enough, no one is aware of the pyrokinesis)

she starts to build herself a reputation in voids' criminal scene, makes herself a familiar face, known for never snitching and never turning down a job.

(it's around this point that her and panic attack are starting to 1v1 each other - going from "you seem familiar..." to "YOU."

she calls him sparky and he calls her matches and she loves to make his job difficult)

she joins a gang and finds out her new boss likes underage girls. she, with the kind of dramatics she'll later become known for, hits him with the to the pain monologue from the princess bride while using a wood saw to cut his hands off.

she finds she doesn't feel bad for killing, sees it as "cleaning up" her city.

it's that kind of violence that allows her to quickly build the reputation she has in the blackout files.

she tries to go home exactly once "just to see how they're doing" and she got turned away. they knew she was that Matchstick person showing up in the news and basically disowned her

("she has a family she never speaks to, because she's scared they'll condemn her for how she chooses to love them, but she loves them anyway." AND THEN THEY DO. BUT SHE STILL LOVES THEM ANYWAY.)

matches carves out her own territory in the guts, and rules it with a bloodied grin. in the beginning it's a chaotic mess of explosions and bloodshed. matches uses all the insider info she got working for various gangs and crime lords to fuck up their operations; stealing shipments, plans and employees, destroying supplies, killing and torturing her way through allies and informants.

she falls in love with someone who doesn't know who she is, someone who only knows her as cassidy and not Matchstick; and it's wonderful. it's passionate and fast and she gets pregnant and she's kind of like fuck because that was Not The Plan. she doesn't know how she feels about it, and sits him down to be like "sooo we fucked up?"

he loses his shit and breaks up with her after telling her she's an idiot and accuses her of trying to ''trap him" and then he lets slip that she's not his only girlfriend and he's been lowkey playing her this whole time bc she's got money.

within a half hour matchstick is washing blood out of her hair.

originally it was spite that made her decide to keep her baby; but cassidy stone had never known how to love anything by half and her baby girl quickly became the most important thing in her life.

she cleans up her act a little bit, focusing more on organising her empire and keeping things running smooth, than antagonising the other void city crime lords.

she builds an odd camaraderie with panic attack, where they still work for different sides but occasionally might briefly ally themselves against a common enemy

it's still a dangerous life though, which was something she'd never really worried about until kirby was born. she hasn't got friends, and her family don't talk to her, and she has this terrible terrible fear that there's no one else in the world who would protect her kid the way she would.

when she's lying in the rubble, choking on her own blood, she realises maybe there's one person she can trust.

matches actually rarely uses her pyrokenisis 'on the job' which means most people aren't aware of her power, she prefers a more classic approach (gasoline, gunpowder, etc)

was taught how to fight by an ex-boxer who ran the local gym in her neighbourhood, and learned how to aim by playing darts

abilities include: business management, interrogation + intimidation, deception, surveillance, weaponry + firearms (my girl LOVES explosives)

she has a rocket launcher covered in stickers that has those fun little phone charms attached to it

she loves her food spicy and charred

hates sweets

has a prosthetic leg gifted to her by sundown inc's tech department

has multiple scars including a cesarean

listen I know it's heartbreaking that Claudia dies and it's understandable to wish she didn't, but let's please not accuse the writers of fridging her. to do so is a fundamental misunderstanding of the story and is frankly insulting to the intelligence and skill of the writers of the show.

Claudia's death, and the overwhelming grief and regret her parents experience because of it, is quite literally the point of the entire story. she dies because Anne's daughter Michele died of leukemia when she was five years old and there was nothing she or her husband could do to prevent it.

writing IWTV was how Anne coped with the unimaginable loss of a parent losing her child. she created a story about a little girl that could not die and then killed her anyway. Claudia's death is a senseless, unavoidable tragedy, just like Michele's was. the grief that haunts Louis and Lestat for the rest of their lives is the same grief that haunted Anne and her husband.

so when you're accusing people of killing Claudia off to benefit a story about two men, please remember that in real life sometimes parents lose their children. please remember Michele Rice.

she's the reason Claudia exists.

I never fully realised how heartbreaking this "I choose the prophecy" thing is. Imagine you are Annabeth. Imagine you are fourteen and the boy you have a crush on since over a year just broke literally any rule, travelled across the whole country and held the dam sky to save you, and you hear him say: "I'm gonna die in two years, because otherwise this poor little boy would have to carry the burden of the prophecy and I can't let this happen."

Edit: I feel like y'all still aren't sobbing enough, so I'd also like to remind you that six months later, Annabeth goes into the labyrinth and gets the prophecy "and your love will face a fate worse than death".
