in your palace warm, mighty king
okay i’ve recently found myself on angel tree tiktok. if you’re unfamiliar with the concept, basically, some stores will put out a tree around the holidays with gift tags for anonymous local kids, and people coming in to do their own shopping can take a tag off the tree and buy kids gifts off their wishlists for the store to pass off to them. (the linked video shows it in action!)
anyway this got me thinking about jack zimmermann at the beginning of his career. he has been fabulously wealthy and privileged for his whole life, but he’s only recently started earning a massive salary of his own and has no real idea of what to spend it on. he’s comfortable. he has a car and a nice apartment and an engagement ring hidden somewhere in said apartment. he knows he should probably donate to a worthwhile cause, but he hasn’t figured out what.
one day, though, bitty’s visiting for the weekend and comes to the store with him, and right there in the entryway, he just… stops. jack doesn’t notice and consequently almost runs him over with the cart.
“you alright? careful, eh?”
bitty does not respond, because he’s looking at the tree.
“bud?”
jack follows his gaze. it really doesn’t look like much. it’s fake, unlit, and has seen better days if the way it’s a little flattened on one side is anything to go by. there is an equally squashed-looking stuffed snowman sat on the floor next to it. it’s the kind of thing your eyes slide over easily, hurrying from one place to another. blink and you’ll miss it.
bitty isn’t blinking.
“lord, i haven’t seen one of these in years,” he says. his voice is soft. he still isn’t looking at jack. “do you know what it is?”
jack doesn’t, so bitty explains. and when they inch closer, jack sees that all the ornaments he thought were plain paper before are actually printed with ages, shoe sizes, requests for warm coats and toys and cute jeans and deodorant. here and there is a specific wish—a bluetooth speaker. a particular board game. one kid, age eight, is fervently hoping for a bike.
and—okay. here’s the thing. they’ve been together for more than a year, and bitty is pretty willing to go along with jack’s desire to spoil him. but although he’s so open and accepting when jack wants to kiss him, or cook dinner for a change, or lay him out on their bed and make him feel good—he will always, always get uncomfortable where significant amounts of money are involved. it was the subject of the one and only fight that sent them to bed still heated. the fundamental difference between their upbringings is the hardest for them to grasp: jack has never known a life without plenty. and bitty—
“i think my parents put me on one,” bitty says. “the year we moved back to madison, after—”
the closet looms between them, black and yawning.
“well. you know. coach had to leave a good job in lawrenceville. took us a while to get back on our feet, i think. and that year, they couldn’t—i mean, i heard them talking at night about how we might not be able to make christmas work, when they thought i couldn’t hear them. but i still wrote my letter to santa, and there were a couple presents when i woke up christmas morning, so.” he scuffs one shoe on the industrial carpet. “maybe an angel sent ‘em.”
the words make something sizzle down jack’s spine and settle low in his gut. he steps forward, reaches out, turns over the nearest tag.
boy, age 11. shoe size: 8. wishlist: sneakers, earbuds, basketball, patriots merch, chapter books. loves fantasy and mythology.
once upon a time, jack spent three months in a rehab center designed specifically for the privacy needs of celebrity clients. his parents footed the bill, had the windows on all their cars tinted for him to hide behind when he got out. at the same time, thousands of miles away, bitty sat at the top of the stairs in his parents’ house and listened to them wonder if they could afford to keep the magic of christmas alive another year.
people are stepping around them to get out of the cold, now, their eyes skipping right over the tree and the boys in front of it. once upon a time, strangers on the street picked apart jack’s overdose like a piece of tabloid gossip. strangers on the street made sure a thirteen-year-old kid had something to unwrap with his family on christmas morning.
“bits?”
bitty sniffles, swipes at one eye with the sleeve of his sweater. “yeah?”
jack lifts the tag gently off its branch, catches bitty’s gaze. bitty’s intake of breath is so sharp it’s audible over the music playing overhead. do you see what i see?
“what do you think? wanna go get us another cart?”

Been A While.
Hey. How's it going. Been pretty busy these past months, which meant no activity on this page. But, I want that to change soon. I've been getting into the whole "liminal space" subject again, and it reminded me of this page on tumblr I made a while ago. That's just a bit of what I wanted to talk about. Something is on my mind recently. I don't have any pictures for interesting abandoned places or familiar locations you swore you have seen before, but this does have something to do with those. Abandoned malls. You have seen them, those eerie, empty places with nearly nobody. Quiet music echoes around the halls and the buzz of the yellow lights to accompany it. Somehow stores can still reside in those halls, even if the mall has around 100 visitors a day, with around 12 of those visitors actually purchasing goods from the shops, or expired candy from the rusted machines. Play places sit still collecting dust, carousels and other little rides become inoperable. Why am I bringing this up though? It's December of 2014. People are rushing to buy presents for loved ones, roads are filled up with cars sitting in traffic, going to different stores and restaurants with family and friends. People sit outside of popular thrift stores dressed in well built Santa costumes, ringing a bell and giving their merriest "Ho, Ho Ho!" waiting for people to slip a coin into a red bucket beside them. That is exactly what I saw, while my parents drove me and my sister to a local mall, that was exploding in popularity. It was very hard to find a parking spot, but eventually a lane was found where my parents rushed to pull into. I remember being so excited, just waiting to see what was in store, and what was in stores too. I was still building my Christmas list at the time, and I was taken there with my sister to get ideas. It was, to say the least, extravagant. The large halls were crowded with people talking to each other, navigating to shops to buy gifts for their families and friends. Candy and vending machines were nearly empty, with lines of kids my size waiting to try new bubblegum flavors, and new stuffed animals that they knew they couldn't get. So many red and green decorations were scattered throughout, from snowflakes, to streamers, to little icons with snowmen, Santa, elves, and other such family favorites on the walls. Charity organizations and stores had their sponsored signs across the walls and on pillars, with merry signs to attract customers and donors. Christmas songs would play through the speakers, though you could barely hear it through the footsteps and chattering of hundreds of people. I don't think a single person there wasn't smiling. Finally, my dad guided my into a gift shop. I couldn't get many ideas as half of the shelves were empty, because all of the popular toys were sold out. It seemed like a scene straight out of my favorite Christmas movie Jingle All The Way. I got to sit on Santa's lap and I excitedly told him exactly what I wanted - a huge marble run set. It was probably my dream toy, to make my own marble courses and show them off to my family. I would go through all of the shops finding gift ideas for myself and my family, taking notes on a little notepad I had brought with me. That, was probably the best memory of my life, that single day. I was so happy, travelling through the mall, and the rest of town. I was so young, and even the littlest thing would make me so happy. Good things dont last forever. (PART 1 OF 2) - Wyntre Woods 2023, posting on Limbo Landscapes

Growing Up, part 1: Forgotten
Pretend like I finished this Mika birthday fic in time for his actual birthday, love and peace Directory
Fandom: Ensemble Stars!! Concept: an exploration of Mika's past and his growing inner psychology as presented through the celebrations of his 15th, 16th and 18th birthday (or, during his final year before Yumenosaki, first year in Yumenosaki/pre-War era, and 3rd year in Yumenosaki/!!time as calculated by the person who almost failed maths in years 11 and 12) Word count for this chapter: 1843 Summary for this chapter: December is always busy. Some things are just bound to end up forgotten in the midst of all the work needed for a child to survive, to help other children survive.
Warnings for this chapter: implied child neglect, implied exploitation of child labour, Mika doesn't eat, in general this one is angst-focused
It seemed like the work was never-ending. It always was like that around this time, late December. Preparations for the New Year's. Comforting those who still haven't made peace with having no family to greet the new year with. Of course, it all fell on Mika. Not like he minded; by then he had lost all hope- no, he didn't even want to be adopted anymore. What could something like a family possibly give him? It would be just giving the universe another chance to show him that he was unwanted, incapable of being loved by anyone. It was just handing someone else the chance to throw him away on a silver platter. He had no need for it.
Besides, Mika was like… an older brother to the other kids. He couldn't abandon them like that. They rely on him, they need him, they are his family. If he were to leave, what would happen to them? They all depend on him, the money he earns feeds them, the rags he mended clothe them. If he were to be adopted, it would be no different to abandoning them. He would be no different to all the other adults who had already given up on those innocent kids. They were his responsibility now. If it weren’t for Mika, those kids would be left to fend for themselves, with nobody caring whether they lived or died. Rather, he’s certain many would prefer those kids like them – like him – gone.
Those are the thoughts that ran through his head as he washed dish after dish. The soap irritated his hands, but callouses had long already formed, his hands toughened, he paid discomfort no mind. Part-time jobs were hard enough to come by, for a 14-year-old. Mika took what he was given. He had to. He was paid under the table - peanuts at that. But every little bit counted.
Every little bit counted, he repeated to himself, scrubbing, and scrubbing and scrubbing, until his vision blurred, until his eyes started stinging. The soap, probably, must have gotten in his eyes when he was moving a strand of hair that obstructed his vision. He sucked in some air. Held his breath. Breathed out. A practiced action, to steel his nerves. To calm his thoughts. And he continued working, because even those peanuts had to be earned. He who does not work, does not eat. He who does not work, will have to watch his lil’ siblings cry from hunger pains.
He spent all day on his feet. He always did. From the morning - helping the younger kids get dressed and ready. Feeding the youngest ones. Crying alongside the tot who refused to eat because of his fever. He'd have to buy medicine, too. But where would he get the money? His part-time jobs barely cover his bus fare and… food. A sigh. To Mika, the choice was obvious, and the decision was made in moments. Because he's a big boy already, he doesn't need it as much as the little ones do. He's in charge of them. He's their protector, their caretaker, the one who will never abandon them like the adults have. Their Big Brother Mika. Though his stomach grumbled in protest at the very thought, he knew it was the responsible thing to do, the right thing to do.
Running around from that morning, helping slower kids clean up, before hurriedly running out without lunch - to his part-time job. The first lined up in that day. Though his stomach growled embarrassingly, he kept his gaze to the floor, hoping nobody would mind him. Nobody would notice him. Thankfully, the older employees ("older" being the high school part-timers) shared their lunch with him. And although he didn't want to accept, his hunger was far too obvious, and they insisted. And he was embarrassed by how eagerly he ate those little candies, nearly tearing the wrappers apart. Yet even eating those small candies, drooling over them like a dog and eyes glowing from joy, he had to excuse it to himself. It’s fine if he eats, he would be of no use passed out. Mika had to make excuses for himself, because a part of him would always nag – you could have given those candies to little Mei who has been crying for three days straight now or to little Aoi who had only just arrived and was still in shock. But he promised himself: when he makes it big, when he becomes an idol like those he saw on TV, like those two he adored so much, he’ll buy those little kids candy by the truckload.
He’ll make it all up to them.
The second job, that evening, wasn’t really a job. Perhaps more like thrifting. Dumpster diving. His favourite. It was a way to save up. He could find many clothes that were still perfectly wearable, with minor alterations, and various trinkets he could DIY into cute decorative objects he could sell to people on the street. Although as he’s gotten older, people are becoming less likely to open their wallets for him. But he would rather beg and plead on the street than make one of the younger kids stand in the cold, at the mercy of strangers.
Regardless, there are always so many things to be found in the dumpsters, that Mika always looked forward to it.
All sorts of things get thrown away. After a hard day of work, Mika allows himself dig through the garbage dump itself. So many wonderful things get thrown away because they were a little odd-looking or a somewhat broken. As if it negated their worth. But Mika knew better. He could always see the hidden gems, the beauty that only lay dormant beneath the eyes that were hanging by a loose thread, torn fabric and stuffing that peeked out. Beneath the tears and the dirt, he knew. All it would take is a little care, a little love. And he could provide that love. For the abandoned toys, he could be their saviour. The one to clean up the grime and sew up the wounds, to hold and cradle and whisper, "It's going to be alright, you'll never be thrown away again."
He scrubbed the dishes harder. He still had to earn that money. The little one's fever isn't going down and he refuses to eat. Mika was gone; he doesn't know if they got him to eat after breakfast. It was up to him, as it always was, to make up for the neglect they must have suffered when he returns for dinner. If he manages to return in time for dinner. But the siren call of an extra 300 yen if he stayed late was hard to resist.
Every little bit counts.
"I'm home," he whispered, to nobody in particular. It was well past midnight. The kids would be asleep, he hoped. So, with the little bag from the pharmacy in one hand, and his patchwork backpack slung over his shoulder, Mika tiptoed upstairs, to the dorms. Fumbling with the doorknob, he carefully leaned a hand on the door, pushing it open slowly enough to avoid creaking. In an effort to make as little sound as possible. But instead of to a quiet dorm filled only with the sounds of sleeping children, Mika opened the door to a room full of children who looked as they were wide awake. Who were wide awake. And suddenly all eyes were on him, who stood there like a deer caught in headlights, frozen in place.
"Big Brother Mika!" It took only seconds for him to be surrounded. He tried to shush them, but what's a tween to a bunch of lively ankle biters? "Where were you all day?!" they were angry. The little ones, all with puffed up cheeks, a few with arms crossed, a few pulling at his clothes to bring him inside, one even (attempting to, with most of the strength present in her tiny fists) trying to hit him. They pulled him towards his bed, where he could see papers and a small box.
"You missed it! You made us miss it, too! Meanie!" and such similar accusations flew. "Wha- what? What did I miss? 'M sorry, was it somethin' important? I was caught up in work, but I'll make it up to y'all, I pro-" "Your birthday, dummy!"
Mika paused.
His birthday. Was that that day? The day before? He once more looked at his bed.
Covered in sweat from the day's work, the filth and stink of rubbish clinging to him, he felt out of place. The papers were handmade cards, with misspelled words and barely legible simple lettering. The box must have been a gift. Did they spend money on him? They couldn't have. "You- you lot shouldn't be so irresponsible, I told'ja to save up yer pocket money… Why would'ja…" He couldn't cry in front of them. He knew he had to always be strong for them, he couldn't cry, even when his voice caught in his throat, even when his eyes started feeling damp.
And Mika stood there, hands covering his face as he sobbed, shaking with each wail. He wasn't sad, far from it. But his heart clenched, and his stomach churned, and he felt like he was about to be nauseous. He'd forgotten his own birthday, so preoccupied with working to survive, to make sure his kiddos survive. He's disappointed those same kiddos, who just wanted to celebrate with him. But instead of the anger growing, they urged him to open the box at least. Instead of hating him for not allowing them the satisfaction of a joint celebration, they asked him to watch the DVD with them all, on the tiny portable TV. Instead of hating him for the stupid mistake he had made, they easily leaned into his embrace, allowing him to hug them, hugging him back, as he continued crying and calling them such good kids, his sweet lil’ angels.
Of course, he sent off the youngest ones to bed, given it was well after one in the morning, promising to rewatch the DVD with them twice the next day. And with the rest, huddled together, they watched the newest Yumenosaki first years performing. The up-and-coming Valkyrie. With most of the kids having fallen asleep about half an hour in, it was really just Mika watching.
Mika, who vowed to himself, that he'd get into Yumenosaki, too. That he'd stand on a stage just like those two, that he'd show everyone… that he'd show these kids he's in charge of - his kids - that they can make it out of this place. He would be their example. Their lighthouse. But for now, he'll continue tucking them in, reading them bedtime stories, dressing them in the mornings, buying them clothes, food, medicine, caring for them. Working three jobs in one day. Loving them in place of the family, adults who abandoned them. Just as he wished someone would have done for him.

Running Out of Character on Twitter
Elon Musk shows how perception changes without doing anything.  Now, that’s a timeline change.  The CEO of tweeting didn’t set out to teach that lesson, which sums up his legacy.  You’re free to tweet your thoughts about it, or X about it if you’re really into believing branding.
Prince’s name change caught on more naturally.  Malibu Stacy’s new hat hasn’t changed the product.  The only difference beside the ‘90s-style sobriquet for the site I bet even Elon privately calls Twitter is how few erstwhile users have stuck around to see the aftermath.
Elbow room isn’t necessarily a virtue.  Holdout diehards enjoy impression rates that rival what used to be retweet counts.  It’s much easier to keep up with one’s feed now in the same sense there aren’t long lines in North Korean fast food restaurants.
One of the richest humans ever presently toils as caretaker of a yip-yap app.  Tweeters voluntarily fritter away their precious hours on this plane of existence rattling off a queue of grievances.  All he needs to do is enable personal publishing of bitching.
Overseeing arguing about reality television is far more respectable than his previous career as a welfare queen.  Private spending is a nice change of pace from someone with an established pattern of pimping projects that get involuntary investors.  Taxpayer funding is ideal for someone who’s about 85 percent shyster.
Big ideas that don’t translate are perfect for the Twitter owner.  The difference between most people with unworkable thoughts is finding funding.
Seducing investors of funds seized from others allowed him to buy a time-wasting app that many use for journalism.  That doesn’t mean actual journalists, who resent social media for showing how easy the job is.  Amateur sleuths can and do fact-check every claim, including those by allegedly professional fact-checkers.  Granting themselves the title doesn’t make it true, so that’s another one to verify easily.
History started this morning, which is why so many forget that he has a long history as a plug-in car-pimping liberal superhero.  You may recognize Obama’s erstwhile BFF as the guy who got a rather giant loan from the Energy Department, which means taxpayers since liberals are confused about where money comes from.  That’s surely the only science that flummoxes them.
Former admirers loathe him because he believes in open forums, if not open markets.  The aforementioned name X will never spread like brokenness connected to all-time scam Buffalo Billions.  Vacancy in every sense increased after East German throwback New York threw money at the problem of companies refusing to do business in a people’s republic.
Consistent financial ruin following fantastic political promises should be a sign for everyone who thinks prosperity is just 10 figures taken from the economy away.  Investment takes the form of seizing funds to spend on monorails.
Aside from results, results were good.  Why did nobody think to spend money before?  The trifling bit about how life doesn’t turn out like all-time serial killer Andrew Cuomo promised doesn’t deter voters in certain decrepit states.  Acting like futuristic manufacturing was destined to happen embodies Democratic scheming in a nutshell.  The solution to government spending not helping was more government spending.  That’ll be the next step, too.  Keep wondering why there are so many Bills fans in Florida.
The only consolation is lack of surprise.  Turning on their dreamboats is part of believing in cult leaders instead of sound ideologies.  Betrayed liberals throw out their New Kids on the Block dolls.  Their taste outside of music is similarly sophisticated.  The lates is the most predictable.  Nobody else is surprised by despising anyone who allows dissent.  The Democratic platform features scientific truth, which means opposing it destroys reality.  Luckily for the most malicious, there’s a place where they can post without fear of getting kicked off for sharing their true emotions.
Waiting for algorithm mending is like anticipating good tweets from AOC.  The site not fixing itself as a sign of self-awareness is good news, but it’d still be nice if some human wouldn’t mess up search results.  Seeing content from followed accounts in chronological order is apparently as unreasonable a request as obtaining eggs during Joe Biden’s presidency.  The lack of meddling inherent in an open forum is intolerable for someone smarter than you.  Some parts of Twitter haven’t changed.
You can be your own editor.  At least, you once could.  The couple months between Twitter’s founding and its overlords realizing how much they enjoyed meddling were a fun freewheeling time like when new cable networks show whatever random wonderful programming they can find.  I miss Rawhide on FX.
Please accept things you don’t want in lieu of fixing what you requested.  This is one less-than-super superintendent.  Blocking the option to block would be like like Ronald McDonald announcing you shouldn’t order McNuggets.  Denying dastards the option to see your awesome tweets is a satisfying final sendoff.  Personally curating one’s feed is part of that whole free speech thing.  Shadow-banning remaining is one lousy consolation prize.
Messing up verification embodies big ideas going nowhere.  Sitting at the top of the Twitter caste was one of the ways the site got things correct, as it meant users could be sure the prominent name they saw was not an impostor.  Now, it means giving one of the wealthiest people ever eight bucks per month as if seeing ads weren’t enough of a cost.  One might not think a little blue checkmark could be even less of a status symbol.  One might be wrong.
Ideas on how to fix the wrong things fit a little too perfectly.  All Elon has to do is undo lame woke meddling.  Like coaching the Dream Team, you just roll out the ball.  Instead in reality, warping Twitter alienates both anyone who hates anyone daring to hint at the existence of natural rights and right-leaning people who just want to see tweets from who they choose.  That’s everyone.  Let’s just get back to welcoming all while blocking the annoying.

my question is why did tom never create a holodeck arcade?? or like... bowling alley?? that seems so him??? can you imagine that... seven tries bowling and literally can ONLY get strikes. and tom is like tch yeah of course i can do that! but he literally cannot hit a single pin... but then for whatever reason he can play skeeball like NOBODY’S business.
an arcade date with b’elanna where he secretly replicates whatever she buys with her tickets?? and brings it to her the next day??? also obviously weekly ddr competitions. janeway is the leading champion there, but tuvok’s been known to “bust a move.”
harry would probably be really good at like, claw machine games? he strikes me as a claw machine game kid. also like pacman. b’elanna really likes those games where you sit inside a little dark booth and shoot things. TOM PLAYS THOSE MOTORCYCLE RACE GAMES... but chakotay somehow beats him EVERY time. but that’s okay because chakotay’s usually following janeway around and playing 2p games with her.
seven can and will DESTROY you at any kind of fighter game, but generally chooses to stand behind people and watch what they’re doing instead. neelix is running around making sure everyone’s having a good time (and occasionally jumping in to play ddr) and the doctor, KNOWN to be extremely competitive and has a need to be the best, is uncharacteristically sitting at the bar drinking some fancy fizzy drink the whole time. except for when HE decides to get in on the ddr, and puts the captain to shame in a single game. although if there’s any kind of golf game, he’s there.
and lastly, naturally, bumper cars. tuvok wants nothing to do with it, but neelix begs him to join. tom and b’elanna are menaces they WILL bump into you and they WILL send you spinning into oblivion. janeway chases tuvok specifically, tuvok wishes he was not present. neelix is just roaming having a good time. the doctor is trying to pose as much of a threat as tom and b’elanna, and eventually surpasses them to become Bumper Car King. harry and chakotay just kinda spin around and are happy to be there. thank you for coming to my ted talk

Even the Losers
Chapter 1
“You can do this Marinette,” Adrien whispered encouragingly, echoing the mantra she’d been whispering to herself for the past two days.  She could do this.  She could manage.  This was for Max.  She could handle it.  He couldn’t be here but she could.  She could be strong for him.  She gave Adrien a shaky smile and nodded.  “We just have to find him and we can leave,” he reminded her.
Marinette took a breath and let it out slowly. She’d dealt with far, far worse than a few judgmental, heartless asses who had no real interest in her.  But seas of artificial smiles had always unsettled her and currently she was surrounded with so much artificial sweetness she felt like she was walking through a kid’s cereal aisle.  That added onto her already existing anxiety had her ready to bolt at the slightest provocation.
She ran her hand over the skirt of her dress, letting the feeling of the fabric and the knowledge of all that had gone into it soothe her.  She was especially proud of her dress and the work that had gone into it.  It was a black so dark it almost appeared to draw in the light around it.  A mesh with strategically placed blood red decorations overlaid the dress, hugging her bodice until it reached her hips then dropped into a flowing skirt that ended just before it could pool on the ground.
She fought the urge to fiddle with the belt in her nervousness.  She couldn’t show weakness like that, not here.  She looked up at Adrien again in search of an anchor to reality.  She took in his expression and had to stifle the laugh that resulted.  He had his own artificially sweet smile on but his eyes quite clearly begged for a quick death.  He glanced down to her and nudged her discreetly, his artificial smile becoming wide and real.  “Shhhh,” he hushed her under his breath.  “We’re trying not to attract attention to ourselves, remember?  We’re ghosts.”  He looked around to make sure nobody was looking at them.
Marinette immediately quieted, her face becoming somber. She did remember.  In and out.  That was the goal.  Her goal. Knock the man on his ass with Max’s accomplishments, then never see him, or anyone else in this room, other than Adrien of course, ever again.  They were supposed to be like ghosts.  There but not.  Her eyes scanned the room looking for their target.
Adrien’s eyes immediately softened and filled with regret.  “Shit, Mari. I’m sorry.  I didn’t mean to…”
“No,” she looked up at him with an artificial smile of her own.  “I know. It’s fine.  It’s not your fault.”  She scanned the crowd again, cursing her height, as she had many times in her life.  Even with the six inch, death defying heels, she still barely reached Adrien’s eyes, let alone give her any kind of advantage to see the crowd.  She needed some kind of vantage point but unfortunately, the only high point in the ballroom was the stage, which she couldn’t utilize if she was going to follow her Ghost policy.  “We might have more success if we split up.  Let me know if you find him.”
Adrien squeezed her arm quickly before nodding. “Good luck.”
Marinette shot him a genuine smile.  “You too.  May the Luck be with you.”
Adrien laughed and shook his head.  “I never should have forced you to watch that movie.”
Marinette grinned back.  “You never should have forced me to watch the prequels.  The original ones were just fine.”  Adrien narrowed his eyes at her but let it drop in favor of disappearing in the crowd to find their target.
Marinette followed him with her eyes until she couldn’t see him anymore then took a deep breath to brace herself.  Her eyes immediately started darting around and her fingers started dancing.  She needed something to occupy them or she was going to start attracting unwanted attention.
She noted a bar close by and made a beeline for it. She waited politely for the bartender to notice her, her fingers tapping anxiously against the bar while she waited. She froze when she heard a gruff voice next to her.  “Did you sneak in here?”
She turned to the voice and blinked a few times. “Excuse me?”
“You’re anxious and jittery.  Afraid you’re going to get kicked out?” the man elaborated.
Marinette studied him for a moment trying to figure out why he looked so familiar.  “No,” she started slowly, trying to give her brain a chance to answer the puzzle. “Just not a fan of events like this.”
The man scoffed and nodded in understanding. “Cheers.”  He raised his glass for her to clink his but she held out her hands with a sheepish look, showing she didn’t have a drink yet.  “Well, that’s a crime.  Nobody should have to endure one of these without a drink.”  He motioned to the bartender and got an immediate response. “Another for me and a…” he motioned to Marinette to give her order.
“Oh, champagne, please,” she finished with a smile for the bartender.  That’s what was socially acceptable at events like this, right?  Champagne.
The bartender looked to the man for confirmation. The man nodded.  “And a champagne for the woman.”  Marinette scowled at the bartender causing the man to laugh. “He’s just worried that you’re underage. You look awfully young.  You’re not, right?”
Marinette’s glare softened in realization.  “Oh, that makes sense.  No, I’m not.  I forgot the legal age here is higher than in France.”
He nodded and looked at her critically for a moment before offering his hand.  “Jason.”
Marinette immediately reached out for his hand and answered with her name before her brain registered the name he’d given. Jason.  Jason Todd.  Bruce Wayne’s son.  She pulled her hand back quickly as the realization hit her and focused on leveling her breathing.  She grabbed the champagne glass more violently than necessary when the bartender set it down in front of her and immediately downed the entire glass, only coughing a bit as the bubbles tickled her throat.  Overall, champagne was not the best drink to chug.  “Another, please,” she croaked out.
“You know, there are better drinks for that, if that’s what you want to do,” Jason grinned, laughing at her.
“Wasn’t the plan until it was and then that’s all I had,” she croaked out, her voice still hoarse from the bubbles.  She kept her eyes focused on her empty glass as she spoke, almost afraid to make eye contact with him as if just seeing her eyes would be enough to blow her cover.
Jason chuckled and nodded in understanding. “Don’t suppose you’d care to dance?”
Marinette whipped her head to him and stared incredulously, forgetting her previous reservations.  She only moved again when the bartender set the new drink down in front of her.  “Um… no… thank you.  That doesn’t seem… I don’t think my date would be comfortable with that.  Good luck getting drunk enough to handle tonight though.”  She gave him a weak smile and raised her glass to him before moving into the fray again, now armed with a socially acceptable fidget toy.
It took five minutes of avoiding wandering hands and leering looks but with a little luck and some prodding from the goddess hiding in the folds of her skirt, she was finally able to stumble on M. Lucius Fox, Director of Research and Development for Wayne Enterprises.  He was in a conversation he was not remotely interested in with some vapid business exec who was just as interested in M. Fox.  Not that M. Fox’s disinterest was clear.  He was very polite and good at covering his boredom, much more so than his conversation partner, but she’d been at enough stuffy, snobby parties with Adrien, Felix, and Chloe to know the signs.
She took another breath and squared her shoulders, going into Ladybug Mode; calm and confident, completely assured of herself. She was on a mission.  She had a goal and a plan to accomplish it, and once she had a plan, she had a direction and purpose, and with those, her insecurities fell away.  With M. Fox in her sights, she could see the pieces and the way they fit together. There were no more doubts.  She set her glass on a passing waiter’s tray and made her way over to M. Fox.
“The elusive M. Fox.  It is a pleasure to meet you,” Marinette purred, coming up next to him with a charming, real smile.
“I didn’t realize I was hiding,” Lucius responded with a polite smile of his own.
“Must just come naturally.  Foxes are known to be crafty.”  Marinette looked around them and motioned toward the dancefloor. “Would you care to dance, M. Fox?”
He shook his head deferentially.  “Are you sure there aren’t other people here you’d rather dance with?”
Marinette smiled conspiratorially and leaned closer to him, making sure to keep a respectable distance.  She did NOT want to have her banter confused with flirting. That was not the strategy she had devised.  “That would defeat the purpose of coming here.  I came here specifically to speak with you.”
Lucius looked down at her analytically, trying to figure out what her angle was, but took her hand and followed her onto the dancefloor.  “And what did you want to speak about, Ms…?”
“Dupain Cheng.  Marinette Dupain Cheng.  It’s nice to meet you M. Fox.  I wanted to speak to you to sell my friend Max Kante.”
Lucius’ eyes widened almost imperceptibly as the music changed.  After a beat, he chuckled.  “I’m not in the market to buy anyone, but thank you.”  He settled his hands on her mid-back and hand for their dance.
Marinette chuckled good naturedly along with him. “Sell his talents, would be a better way to say it.”
“And where is Mr. Kante?” Lucius raised an eyebrow at her, curious why the young man didn’t bother to come himself.  “Why are you presenting his talents instead of him?”
“Finals.  Had the incredibly bad luck to have a Friday at noon final.  I mean at least it wasn’t at 19h, right?  Can you believe they have those?”  She scrunched up her nose in playful disgust.  “But still means he’s taking it right now.  And for his last final of his career.  I mean… probably.  Knowing him, he might get another PhD at some point.  My finals and presentation ended last week.  M. Wa…” she took a steadying breath and looked back up with a strained smile hoping he wouldn’t notice the stutter.  “M. Wayne even visited for it.  That’s when the idea for this came to me.  So while Max studied, I plotted.”
“So why me then and not Mr. Wayne?” Lucius asked with a curious interest.
Marinette froze for just a second.  Hardly enough for anyone to notice.  Her mind raced to calculate the appropriate response to that question, a satisfactorily casual yet intelligent response.  “M. Wayne isn’t in charge of research.  You are.  Not to mention, I highly doubt the CEO would be involved enough in the research and development projects to know what was going on.  You I take as a man who knows what is going on with all your ongoing projects.”
He nodded.  She wasn’t wrong, or normally wouldn’t be.  Mr. Wayne usually was not involved in any projects and with the exception of one particular project they were having issues with, he wouldn’t know the particulars.  “A very dangerous and elaborate plan.  Why didn’t you make an appointment with me?  Or just stop me on the street?” he prodded, hoping for her thought process.
Marinette laughed lightly.  “I don’t imagine I would have had a chance in Hell of making an appointment with you in your office.  I have no standing, no name, no significance that would have attracted any PA worth their salt’s attention.  I would have been pawned off onto a low ranking employee to handle, if I was handled at all.  And something like this needed to be taken to you.
“As for running into you on the street, I can’t imagine you would have responded positively to getting accosted on the street. You seem more than capable of handling yourself with grace in the face of a pest.  I doubt I would have gotten more than a few words in.  At a gala however,” she grinned conspiratorially at him. “Societal convention.  Almost absolute certainty of at least one dance where I would have you one-on-one for a few minutes.  Hostage audience.  Figured I could use it to my advantage for once.”
Lucius smiled back at her ingenuity.  “There’s an application process he could have gone through,” he noted.
Mari nodded and looked out to the crowd, scanning it.  “Right, applying to M. Fedor Rabler,” she said distractedly.  “He did that.”
Lucius nodded in understanding.  Their application process was tough.  Lots of amazing candidates didn’t get through. He had to respect her devotion to her friend, to risk coming here and potentially making an enemy of Wayne Enterprises if he’d been that sort of man.  His eyes turned sympathetic.  “I’m sorry he was passed over.”
“You know, I’ve noticed Elspeth Cole puts forth a lot of inventions and extremely varied ones at that,” she continued as though she hadn’t heard his consolation.  “Most inventors, you can see their process, you can see how they got from one invention to the next, but hers… they’re so varied.  It’s almost like they’re coming from completely different people.”  Lucius watched her carefully, waiting to see where she was going with this.  “That’s them, isn’t it?  Dancing together.  Awfully close for purely colleagues.”
Lucius followed her sight line to Ms. Cole and Mr. Rabler dancing extremely closely.  Not obscenely, but perhaps a bit closer than was normally acceptable at a society event such as this one.  “It’s hardly incriminating that two people with expertise in electrical engineering would get together,” he said slowly.
“Max is amazing.  Brilliant,” Marinette said, seemingly not noticing her non-sequitur. “He created an AI that helped the Parisian superheroes locate and defeat our supervillain at only 14.”  Lucius’ brow rose.  That was certainly promising.  He wondered what would have caused them not to take such an applicant.  Surely there was some sort of embellishment there, but as he studied her, she seemed entirely genuine.
“He’s being scouted by several high profile companies including Lexcorp and Palmer Technologies.”  She turned her attention back to Lucius, a curious pout on her lips. “But not Wayne Enterprises.”  She looked away with clearly forced casualness. “Lexcorp and Palmer, they’re offering pretty impressive packages.  Not as good as he deserves in my opinion, but I may be a bit biased.  Wayne Enterprises however… nothing.  Not even an offer.
“Now, I don’t really have a dog in the fight… other than wanting my friend to be safe and treated with the respect he deserves. But Palmer Technologies gets blown up by a villain or its inventors kidnapped far too frequently for me to be comfortable with my friend working there.  And Lexcorp…”  She looked down as if in thought before looking back at him again with a determined look in her eye.
“You know, I get a feeling sometimes.  I can’t really explain it, just get a feeling about people or things.  I’ve found it’s best for me and the people around me if I listen to that feeling and that feeling tells me Lex Luthor is the last person who should be trusted with a brain as brilliant as Max’s.”  She looked back over to Mr. Rabler and Ms. Cole.  “That same feeling told me Max shouldn’t trust the application process for Wayne Enterprises.”
She looked back at Lucius with an apologetic smile. “No offense.  So, I convinced Max to make a small part of his submission just a little off.  Just a bit. Enough that even an expert could miss it, but if it’s wrong the project could never work.  It took a lot of convincing to get him to do it.  He refused to believe he had anything to worry about in Wayne Enterprises with its stellar reputation.”  She scrunched up her face in annoyance.  “But that feeling, you know?  I couldn’t get over it.  After a lot of work, I convinced him there was no harm.  After all, if he was hired he could fix it.  If he wasn’t… well, you shouldn’t be using what he presented anyway, right? No harm, no foul as you Americans say.”
“No,” Lucius agreed.  “That would be theft and completely against WE policy and standards.  In fact, we should not be asking applicants to submit anything like that in the first place.”
Marinette smiled and nodded approvingly.  “I’ve heard rumblings, or rather Max has, of WE getting into transmutation of materials.  Just can’t get that algorithm right though, can you?  Algorithms are hard.  Just a little off and nothing works.”
He stared at her.  That was a secret project.  Other departments in Wayne Enterprises didn’t even know about it.  “I can’t comment on ongoing projects.”
“I never did show you what Max is capable of, did I?”  She gave him a bright smile and reached down to press a disguised button on her belt. Lucius tensed and cursed himself for exposing himself to whatever she was about to do.  A wave of emerald green washed over the front of her bodice as the blood red decorated mesh overlay turned into a brilliant emerald green that reflected the lights now rather than absorbing it.
Lucius’ eyes widened in surprise, a feat very few had been able to draw out of him.  “He designed the fabric?” he whispered out.  He reached out tentatively to touch the fabric at her shoulder.
Marinette grinned brilliantly at his reaction.  It was no less than Max deserved.  He’d worked incredibly hard on it.  “He did,” she nodded in confirmation, “and the software that controls it.  The whole dress can change but we’re kind of surrounded here and I didn’t want to attract too much attention.”  She let him touch it for a moment before pushing the button again to turn it back into the black, then allowing him to feel the mesh to confirm it was the same fabric.  “He has ideas for changing the texture as well, but limited resources you know? Something I’d hope wouldn’t be an issue at WE.”
“How does it work?”  His eyes were still focused on the fabric at her shoulder. He took a quick look at the rest of the bodice, but quickly snapped his eyes back to her shoulder.  The neckline was conservative, but it was still rather unbecoming to stare at the young woman’s chest.
Marinette laughed.  “You’ll have to ask Max that.  I just designed the dress.  I don’t really understand the mechanics behind it, but he does.  I doubt Ms. Cole can say the same.”
Lucius stared in awe at her shoulder before looking back up to her eyes and nodding in understanding.  “Interesting.  I’ll take that under advisement.  Maybe we should be scouting you as well.”
Mari laughed.  “No, thank you.  I’m not an inventor.  I’m a designer.  But I appreciate the interest.”
Lucius nodded and led her off the dancefloor with the end of the song.  “Inventor or not, we can always use someone with intuition, intelligence, and ingenuity like you’ve demonstrated.”
Marinette gave him a brilliant, somewhat familiar smile. “That’s very flattering.  Thank you, M. Fox.  But tonight is about Max.  I have my own, separate plans for my future.”
Lucius nodded in understanding.  “Our loss,” he answered sincerely.  “If you ever need any help or advice, please feel free to call me.  I’m sure Mr. Kante will have it soon enough and can pass it onto you.”  He looked back down to her shoulder again.  “If I may…”  He motioned toward her shoulder.
Marinette laughed.  “Of course.  I understand how truly impressive it is.  It’s been incredibly inspirational, thinking of the options.”
“And what did your intuition tell you about tonight?” He looked up to meet her eyes, curious about her answer.
Marinette’s face went slack for a moment before she pasted on a bittersweet smile.  “That it would be costly but worth it.”
Lucius quirked his head to the side.  “In what way?”
Marinette shook her head absently and took a sudden interest in M. Fox’s tie.  “I’m not sure yet.”
Mr. Fox’s eyes softened.  “Would he be available to meet on Monday?”
Marinette grin and snapped her eyes up to him. Mission success!  Max was going to get his interview!  “He can be.”
“I’d actually like to speak with both of you, if you don’t mind.  In my office at 10 Monday?” he offered.
Marinette faltered.  “In Wayne Enterprises?”
Lucius chuckled.  “Naturally.”
Marinette swallowed heavily.  “Why don’t we meet somewhere else?  Early morning coffee perhaps?” she offered instead with an artificial smile.  “Here’s my card.  Have someone give me a call or text and I can arrange it.  He’s scheduled to fly in tomorrow morning.  He was supposed to meet with Lexcorp Monday morning, but he’ll be at coffee to meet you instead.”
Lucius smiled back at her as he slipped her card into his pocket.  “I greatly appreciate your candor and support Ms. Dupain Cheng.”  He took her hand in both of his to shake it.  “I cannot tell you how good it was to meet you.  And if you ever get one of those feelings about me or Wayne Enterprises, let me know, okay?”
“Lucius.”
Lucius froze at the cold voice, not accustomed to that tone of voice directed at him.  He looked over curiously and missed Marinette freezing before pushing another button on her belt.

Divorce | J.P
Paring: James Potter X Slytherin!Reader
Summary: Reader goes through divorce with her arranged husband but sees her Hogwarts crush almost two years later at her Potions shop in Diagon Alley
Divorce sucks. There is no other way to say it. There is no amount of sugar to properly coat the words to make them seem better than they are. Instead, they’re pure salt– pure acidity. An arranged marriage for purebloods was typical. That doesn’t mean that everyone technically agrees they work. Some speculate that arranged marriages work more than chosen marriages. Y/n wouldn’t be one of those people.
Her family was a part of the sacred twenty-nine. The L/n’s, to be more specific. Y/n was a model child, an only child at that. She was sorted into Slytherin with not a consideration of any other house. Immediately at the age of sixteen, she was engaged to another man called Zenix Flores, another family of the sacred twenty-eight. Zenix was sweet, but he wasn’t her type.
Throughout her years at Hogwarts, Y/n stared at another. His name was James Potter. A star Quidditch player for the Gryffindor team. The best Chaser. Y/n’s lingering stares and dreamy look didn’t make it past Zenix. Fortunately, Zenix had eyes for another as well, Sirius Black, the best friend of James Potter. They bonded over that. They bonded over being in love with people they couldn’t have.
Everyone dies eventually. Immortality is not reality, and once Y/n’s parents died. Divorce was in order. However, they didn’t love each other like they should’ve it still sucked. They were close friends. But did close friends have a child together? Leo Flores, the product of Y/n Flores and Zenix Flores, was only eight years old when they went through the divorce. Leo was a token to show that Zenix and Y/n fell in love. An illusion.
It took months, but after the process was complete, Y/n left. Leo was to be in her care for the rest of his life. Zenix would send some of his profit to them to help, but he would never see his son again. Granted, he didn’t treat Leo well. Always so harsh, so strict on the little boy. The first words out of Leo’s mouth were ma’am and sir. Not momma or daddy. Instead, they were formalities.
They lived in an apartment in Diagon Alley. It wasn’t huge, but it was enough. Y/n changed her last name, and Leo’s back to L/n. Another long process but worth the wait. Y/n worked at a Potions shop in the Alley. Sometimes her old friend Severus would visit and buy some ingredients, but no one else she knew ever came into the shop. Not until he showed up at the door.
James Potter came waltzing into the Potions shop like it was nobody’s business. Unknown to the woman working the shop, he had been watching her work from afar. Just across the street was a bookstore where Remus would visit. During one of those visits, James caught sight of her. Granted, James didn’t think he’d find love after Lily ran away after his proposal claiming he wasn’t enough but that all changed when he saw her.
The feelings came back like it was yesterday she was gazing at him from the Slytherin table in the Great Hall. Y/n’s cheeks were set ablaze, and her stomach was placed into a frenzy of a million different feelings. Her heart made it seem like she ran around the Quidditch pitch one thousand times. Unbeknownst to her, he felt the same way.
Eventually, he made his way to the counter, “ Um- Good Afternoon. “
“ Good afternoon, sir. How may I assist you today? “ Y/n asked despite her racing heart, “ I need some help brewing a complex Potion. “ James confessed, fiddling with his hands.
“ What Potion, sir? “ Y/n inquired, “ Wolfsbane. “ James answered.
Her eyebrow quirked upward, “ That is a difficult Potion. It could have awful defects if made incorrectly. “ Y/n explained, looking at the ingredient list, “ How about this, I’ll make you the Potion instead of you possibly messing it up? “
“ How can I trust you won’t mess up? “ James questioned, smirking teasingly, “ Well. If it helps any, I received O’s on all of my Potion examinations, even in N.E.W.T level. “ Y/n quipped.
“ Well. I suppose you know your stuff. “ He replied as he crossed his arms, “ I suppose I do. “ Y/n retorted with a smile.
So James decided that she’d make the Potion. He would’ve paid her a million Galleons if he was just allowed to sit in the shop and stare at her. She was a beauty and moved so gorgeously. She moved with a purpose, with determination and ambition. Sirius and Remus had begun teasing him as James stared longingly at the Potions shop across the street.
“ Do you know her name? “ Remus asked, standing beside James now, “ No? “ James stated.
Remus chuckled; of course, he didn’t, “ Y/n L/n. She was a Slytherin in our year. Amazingly brilliant she is. Apparently, she was married to Zenix Flores but got divorced two years ago. “
James and Sirius stared gobsmacked, “ Did you stalk Prongs’ future wife? “ Sirius accused, and Remus shrugged, “ I was curious. Plus, I knew her at Hogwarts. She was a Prefect. We had a lot of rounds together. “
“ She was a Prefect? “ James queried, “ Mhm. You were too busy drooling at Lily to notice her. “ Remus nodded.
Now James felt incredibly stupid. All those pranks on the Slytherin house made him feel exceptionally stupid, knowing that she could’ve caught the backlash on some of them. Not only that, but she was a part of the sacred twenty-eight. James had never felt more idiotic, and he had gotten rejected after proposing to his girlfriend. That was saying something.
A month had passed, and the potion was ready. So once again, James walked into the Potions shop. This time she had a messy top knot present on top of her hair. Her eyes held extreme tiredness, and she moved almost sluggishly. James was worried. But Y/n saw him enter the shop and her cheerful smile glazed her face. Two bottles were now present on the counter for James to take.
He stood at the counter and pressed ten Galleons on the table, “ Sir, they’re only three Galleons. “ Y/n stated, “ Take the extra. You look exhausted. “ James replied.
“ Th- Thank you. “ Y/n smiled, “ Thank you, Y/n, for making these. “ James said gratefully.
Y/n blushed, “ I- Um- You were a Slytherin Prefect in my year at Hogwarts. “ James stammered, “ I’m sorry I didn’t recognize you before. “
“ It’s okay. Divorce can do that to you, Huh? “ Y/n laughed bitterly, “ Well, when I proposed to Lily, she straight up told me I wasn’t good enough so, that was almost like divorce minus the paperwork. “ James added.
“ I’m- I’m so sorry. “ Y/n apologized, “ No, no. I’m okay, trust me. It’s been about three years. “ James replied.
Before Y/n could speak again, steps were heard from the second story, “ Mom! Mom! “ Leo’s voice called as he rushed down the steps.
“ Mom! “ Leo appeared from behind the counter to see James and a blushing Y/n, “ Oops, uh, sorry, mom. “
“ No, it’s fine. Come here. “ James beckoned, and Leo hesitantly approached, “ What’s your name, little man? “
“ I’m ten! “ Leo announced proudly, and James chuckled, “ That’s awesome! “ James smiled.
Y/n turned to her son, “ What did you need, Leo? “ Despite being embarrassed, she was calm, “ You accidentally placed my quills on a high shelf. I can't reach them. “ Leo confessed, slightly embarrassed.
“ I’ll be up in just a second, but- “ Y/n began, but James stuck out his hand, “ I’m James. “
“ I’m Leo. “ Leo accepted the handshake and smiled at the adult man, “ If your mom doesn’t mind, maybe we could chat? “ James inquired, looking toward Y/n.
Leo looked hopeful at his mom, “ Please? “
“ Sure. You can go. “ Y/n allowed, and Leo hopped over the counter.
Before James could leave the proximity of the counter, Y/n grabbed his wrist, “ Please. Take care of him; I'm trusting you blindly here. “ She pleaded, and James smirked, “ Of course. “
The rest of the day went smoothly. Y/n had closed shop and began restocking items when they showed up. James' unkempt brown hair was more unorganized, but his hazel eyes glassed with mischief. Leo’s black hair was blown away from the rain, and his blue eyes sparkled with excitement. James beckoned the ten-year-old back upstairs while he approached Y/n.
“ So? Have a nice day with my kid? “ Y/n teased, and James chuckled, “ He’s fantastic. “
“ I know. “ She replied, “ I took him for ice cream, and we went shopping for a little. “ James informed.
Y/n melted at the adoration present on James' face, “ Do you need any money back? I can- “
“ No. Don’t worry about it, doll. I’ve got it covered. “ James interjected, “ I just saw him, and he had this look. He looked trapped. He needed to leave and just let loose for a couple of hours. “
“ I- I really love him. “ James confessed, and Y/n smirked, “ You’re in love with my son but not the woman who created him? “
“ If we're being honest. I’ve been watching you from the bookstore across the street. I thought you were gorgeous. Remus was the one who told me who you were. “ He admitted nervously, “ But being with your son today. If you’d like, could I take him out more often? “
She stepped down from the ladder and stood in front of him, “ How about you stay forever? “
“ I- I mean that is if you want. I know that I’m a pureblood, and- and my son- you probably don’t want to have a child right now. He’ll be going to Hogwarts soon, and quite frankly, I’m not sure I’ll be able to handle it. But- But his former father wasn’t amazing, and I’m not sure you want that responsibility- “
Y/n was cut off when James grabbed her by the waist and placed his lips on hers. His thumbs rubbed gentle circles on her skin through her shirt. Y/n’s hands went through his unkept brown tuffs and his glasses slightly fogged from the heat of the kiss. They pulled apart but rested their foreheads on each other. They were still somewhat breathless from the soft kiss.
He held her chin in his hand, “ I’d love nothing more than to stay forever. “

the demon bros+ undateables showing their love
thought about this for 5 min then had to write it out so enjoy
lucifer
first off you notice he treats you differently
and by differently i mean like you’re his favorite child  sibling
you get away with anything??? and he’s softer with you than with the others (which is canon)
then you see that?? he keeps buying you stuff you said you wanted when he was present
and you’re ofc impressed
but you’re more impressed by how open he’s around you
he’ll leave most of his walls down around  you
which means you’ll get to experience unfiltered lucifer
he’ll laugh around you more, make dumb dad jokes, nap with his head in your lap, complain drunkenly about his work and bros, give you sloppy cheeks and forehead kisses
you find it rly cute though
if you’re in the human world he’ll 100% take this chance to send you beautifully written letters asking you how you are and leaving some verses that reminded him of you on the back like a 19th century vampire
“dear mc, how is your life? mine is filled with woe and unease since i do not  have the light of my life around anymore...anyway here’s a poem about being horny and alone by a 18th century romantic author hope to see you soon, xoxo lucifer”
you try to respond in the same way and send him memes on the back instead of  poetry (or real poetry depends on your mood)
mammon
protective of you 100% will throw hands with anyone that even glances weirdly your way
but also wants to show you off? like look at this human!!! this is MY human!!!
gives you random thoughtful gifts that reminded him of you
wants to be around you 24/7 so he invites you to all the events that he thinks you’ll like
you wanna party? perfect. you wanna go on a weird ghost stories tour around the city? cool. you wanna waltz in one of those old people parties? he’s already reserved two tickets. you just wanna lay around and nap? he’s already on your lap.
it doesn’t matter if you’re in a romantic relationship or not this man WILL serenade you outside your window
rapunzel style with an acoustic guitar or with a boombox like a rebel 80s kid
anyway here’s toxic by britney spears babe this is for YOU
levi
considers you his bff ofc
but also at first he’s still really awkward around you and doesn’t really know what to do for you and feels bad thinking only you do things for him
until you reassure him you enjoy just being around him so it’s fine
he blushes and starts inviting you more to his room to game/ watch stuff
at some point he starts buying two tickets to all concerts he goes to and invites you along
but also? he asks you what you’re into and starts marathoning your favorite animes/ movies/ series so he can talk with you abt them
you feel really moved that he’d do that for you???  like??? bruh...
your relationship is basically friends respecting each other and wanting to know each other the best through their passions even if it means getting into some weird shit
it’s rly wholesome tho
if you’re romantically involved he’ll totally do roleplay as your favourite character and you do the same for him and it’s really cute
also imagine: artistic collabs. you make fanart together??? you can program games together???? you do cosplay together??? the possibilities...
satan
he’ll hate to be compared to his dad brother but he does show how much he trusts you by showing his unguarded side too
when he first talked about lucifer without the filter of his nice guy persona you were pretty shocked
like he was really going at it
but then you realize? he’s just like that when he’s comfortable
and it’s not all mean spirited, he just has,,, a strong personality and a lot of opinions about stuff (which you sometimes share with him)
but you also found out it’s really fun to gossip with satan
since he knows all the juicy gossip from his multitude of ties (he’s sharing the title of gossip queen with asmo that’s why they get along so well tbh)
also if you even find a teacher you hate he’ll tell you all their embarrassing moments to make you feel better
he also recommends you books and poems and sends you quotes that made him think about you
so you sure as heck don’t need to buy books while you’re in the devildom bc he’ll buy you an entire library
asmo
compliments you without comparing you to himself which is the highest compliment he can give
like mammon he’s more into the showing everyone his favorite human around while also protecting them
he’ll take you to his parties and gatherings as a guest of honor, he’ll make you meet all kinds of people and open up opportunities for you
he’ll be the one that pampers you
you’d think lucifer is the sugar daddy of the family but nope it’s asmo
he’ll buy you cute clothes, shoes, beauty products everything that he saw and imagined would look bomb on you
if you’re not into clothes he’ll buy you art supplies, books, anything you want but he’ll still probably  buy you at least some clothes he thinks are cute
if you’re romantically involved,,,, he’ll buy other toys for you as well which you can try together wink wink
beel
cooks for you
no questions asked when it’s his turn to cook he’ll think about what YOU would like to eat first before making something
which is??? really touching coming from beel
and also means sometimes he’ll make the same dish three weeks in a row and annoy the others while you just get excited bc ??? you get to eat your favourite dish??? again and again????
thank you beel you truly know how to touch someone’s insides
also opens up to you and talks to you about his fears and thoughts
expect to get 4 am msgs from beel if he had a nightmare
which would end up in you coming to cuddle him (and belphie also joins sometimes)
which tbh is that even a thing you can complain about?
belphie
is more baby less murder when you’re around
naps on your lap, naps on your shoulder, naps with you anywhere
but also let’s you nap on HIM
besides being soft around you he actually opens up to you too
and talks to you about his traumas and issues
which he has in common with his twin what can you do
so you have weekly cuddle parties with him and beel where you talk about shit and actually make them resolve their issues instead of just,,, ignoring them
also if you’re into each other you probably tease each other and flirt really shamelessly in public while the others cringe and or blush at your language
are you a cowboy? because i want you to ride me all night
simeon
writes you fancy letters with poetry like lucifer, but his ink is scented and  his envelopes contain pressed flowers more often than not
if you’re together you even do letter sexting if you’re into it
creates characters based on you in his stories (which you don’t believe even if levi points out you that the two of you are kinda similar)
asks you to spend more and more time with him and luke
invites you to picnics, reads to you while your head is in his lap, cooks you snacks
if you’re a theatre kid too,,, you do musical love confessions too,,, sometimes by just reciting the lyrics of really popular musical theatre songs in a death panned voice
cough a heart full of love from les mis but read like poetry through the fence of the house of lamentation cough
asks you cryptic shit hannibal style like “tell me mc what does it mean to want to be consumed whole by another? is it a desire to become something bigger than yourself or is it related to our need to become one with our loved one like some cultures pointed out before?”
you’re either really into his cryptid talk or just roll your eyes and smooch him
diavolo
invites you around to his castle all the time
sometimes he even pulls some weird shenanigans just to make you spend more time with him
expect tea parties with him luci and barbatos in no particular combination
gives you compliments 24/7  even in public
remember how he treats lucifer? he’s that for you too but he’s learned from the lucifer experience to focus on complimenting you as a person more than how you look
if you’re into pda he’ll touch you all the time
if you ever wanted a gomez - morticia romance, here’s your goth big titty himbo that’s way too full of love
if you’re lovers expect to be pampered, i feel like? he doesn’t buy a lot of gifts and such because he’s probably tired of material things but he will make time in his busy schedule for you and spend a lot of time with you
which means more to him than gifts
(we will buy you anything you ask though)
barbatos
actually talks with you about stuff outside rad, the demon bros and diavolo
also invites you to alone time tea or wine time
where you drink and gossip
if satan and asmo are the crowned queens of gossip barbatos is the king of gossip but he doesn’t share his knowledge to most people so nobody knows what he knows
but he knows,,,, a lot
and not only that he knows a lot about people nowadays,,, but imagine the things he knows about like historical figures and such,,,
so prepare for story time with barbatos where he  talks about how oscar wilde was almost summoned by drunk inccubi during a party once, or how  diavolo cried when he was a kid because he sent a letter to caravaggio asking him to paint his portrait and he said no
also if you get drunk together expect really energetic talkative barbatos destroying DESTROYING everyone (except diavolo ofc)
“lucifer please i once saw you crying because you thought diavolo was ignoring you when you actually forgot to press the send button to your messages ”
if you’re romantically involved diavolo will always be first in his hear but that just means you’ll have to invite diavolo along on your dates which  just means you’ve got a new lover and a new bff
solomon
he invites you on all kinds of wacky adventures
you  visit witches, go to weird magical forest parties or orgies if you want, you go travelling the mountains for rare herbs
it’s like you’re faust and he’s mephisto  haha the irony and he’s showing you another side of the world you never knew
ofc the others know about all this but??? they thought it’s normal and didn’t even consider you know nothing about it
but solomon knows what it was like to be just a human
and since he likes you he empathizes with your situation
he also make you meet all kinds of people
since he has 72 contracts and hundreds of years of doing wack stuff he must know some interesting people
and now his friends are your friends
i feel like romantic solomon would be just him?? but less shady with you especially since now you understand him better
but also he’ll probably bring you weird shit from his alone expeditions
did you ever want the tears of a mermaid? a carnivorous plant that feeds on emotions? a crying portrait? no? well too bad because now you have a room full of weird items
...that you love and treasure thank you very much

THAT is the importance of an adult who Understands.
one of the things that i always come back to when i think about sasuke is that sasuke has virtually everybody in the village fooled.  you couldn’t find a more messed up kid in all the hidden leaf if you tried, but you wouldn’t know it to look at him, because he can’t afford to acknowledge or display weakness - firstly, because weakness means he isn’t strong enough to take on itachi, and secondly, because signs of struggle on sasuke’s part might mean that an authority figure tries to involve themself in his life, and sasuke doesn’t want anyone interfering in something he sees as a personal quest.  he doesn’t see himself as a child who needs to be looked after by adults; he sees himself as an adult in a frustratingly small body, and he wants all the other adults to leave him alone and let him do what he needs to do.  he doesn’t want meddling.  he wants everyone who has the power to potentially keep him from getting what he most desires to remain oblivious to his true state of mind, to not look too closely, to never see a child in distress, because if he ever lets on that he doesn’t have his shit together, it’s possible that one of the leaf’s less negligent grown-ups will swoop down on him and start trying to intervene/“parent” him, which to sasuke’s mind just means “get in the way.”
sasuke, who has long felt like he’s already an adult dealing with adult problems, won’t tolerate that.  so he masks his issues, to the point where he has virtually everyone around him completely deceived.  his regular schoolteachers don’t worry about him - he’s a high achiever, he gets perfect grades, he’s top of his class in everything, he doesn’t make trouble.  his classmates don’t worry about him - they buy the ‘i’m so cool, nothing fazes me’ act and worship at his feet, even as he demonstrates that he wants nothing to do with them.  the rest of the leaf village doesn’t worry about him, either - they see him as a source of village pride (and a source of entertainment/drama, like when they’re all so excited to watch The Last Uchiha fight for their nation during the chunin exams).  even though sasuke is so messed up on the inside, the exterior facade he presents to people is specifically designed to prevent any wondering about how he’s doing.  as far as the world can see, he’s doing Just Fine (and while everyone is busy not wondering about his health, he can get down to the business of getting his revenge).
sasuke’s strategy for relating to other people is, essentially, the opposite of naruto’s approach.  naruto, in his early childhood, draws as much attention to himself as possible, causing all sorts of mayhem, in the hope that someone, somewhere will see him.  he makes trouble and causes problems precisely because he desperately wants someone to acknowledge his pain, and that’s how he ends up landing iruka as an adult support figure, because iruka notices what’s happening and decides to get involved.  sasuke, in contrast to naruto, doesn’t want anyone to acknowledge or even notice his pain, because if they do notice it, they might try to stop him from pursuing what he thinks is the only way to alleviate it.  that’s not an acceptable outcome for him, so instead of making a scene and calling attention to himself, he hides in plain sight.
sasuke doesn’t want people to get involved in his life.  he wants to be left to his own devices.  he doesn’t think he needs (read: deserves) anybody’s help, and some tiny part of him knows that a Responsible Adult might raise their eyebrows at what he’s doing to himself, so he uses his “high-achiever, too cool for school” persona to pull the wool over everyone’s eyes.  and he almost succeeds - until kakashi enters the picture.  kakashi, who can’t be fooled.  kakashi, who has known from Day One, Minute One exactly what goal is driving all of sasuke’s high achievement, and who knows that sasuke is NOT okay, in either the head or the heart.  kakashi, who in the above gifset can tell that sasuke is having a crisis without even turning around.  kakashi doesn’t need to be shown evidence before he gets concerned.  he’s known from the very start that sasuke is struggling, because he lived through similar pains and tried to cope with them in similarly unhealthy ways (remember: “useless things like emotions only get in the way”/“having too many ties in this world will only lead you astray” + “everyone you’re talking about has already been killed”/“they’re all dead...because i wasn’t strong enough to save them”).
sasuke still tries to put up the front.  a few scenes prior to the above gifset, sasuke is the one who is making fun of naruto for freezing up - you’re not hurt, are you...scaredy-cat.  and he completely fools his peers with his attitude - sakura’s got stars in her eyes, naruto’s super jealous; both of them think sasuke’s So Cool and Super Powerful and Not Afraid of Anything!
but when sasuke himself is confronted with a serious, imminent threat to his life (one against which his supposedly “advanced” skills are useless, one from which he can’t protect himself; aka, one where he’s suddenly reminded that he’s actually a twelve year-old genin and his safety is out of his control, just like it was the night his family was murdered), he’s the one who panics.  the other kids are scared, too - but sasuke completely loses it.  he almost kills himself to get away from the intensity of his fear.  *cough* it’s the ptsd *cough* but anyway -
kakashi is able to sense this without even turning around.  he’s preparing to fight an aggressor under the least ideal circumstances possible - they were supposed to be on a mission where it was four people protecting one man, but because tazuna lied to them, they’re now in a situation where it’s one man protecting four people, including three children - and even with all of that competing for his attention, kakashi is still focusing closely enough on each individual kid to sense that sasuke is going off the rails.  without even turning around, he knows.
we all remember this, right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
it doesn’t matter how much of an act sasuke puts on.  kakashi has been there.  he knows better.  he can’t be fooled.  he calls for sasuke by name and pulls him back from the brink.
kakashi interrupts this crisis so effectively.  not only is he able to snap sasuke out of his panic, but he’s also careful to then extend his reassurance to everyone present, accomplishing the dual purposes of calming everyone else down and also redirecting attention away from sasuke’s more extreme reaction, which the others haven’t noticed yet.  it’s deftly done.  it addresses sasuke’s crisis on an individual level without putting him in the spotlight.  it works.  the way sasuke relaxes in that last gif...man.
calm down.  i’ll protect you with my life.
i’ve already talked a little bit about how much it would mean for somebody with sasuke’s particular history to hear that (especially when those words are spoken by an adult who follows through on the promise every single time), but here i just want to focus on the fact that the only reason sasuke is lucky enough to receive this reassurance in the first place is because kakashi isn’t fooled by sasuke pretending he doesn’t need to hear it.  kakashi and the kids are very new to each other at this point, but even so, kakashi still understands sasuke better than any other adult in the hidden leaf.  he’s the first authority figure who sasuke hasn’t been able to trick into obliviousness - sasuke can’t pretend away his problems in front of someone who used to have all those same problems himself!  kakashi is too savvy to be waved away with the whole ‘i’m super advanced for my age i don’t need any help don’t look behind my mask’ charade.  kakashi invented that game.  he knows it’s one you don’t want to win.  he won it himself, when he played it, and winning just meant that everybody took him at his word when he acted like he was fine and nobody ever gave him the kind of help he needed.  he’s not going to let another kid get away with the same self-destructive shenanigans, not when he’s around to call their bluffs and be the kind of support structure he himself could’ve benefited from when he was younger.

Never Ready
Summary: “It’s not like I’m ready to take her in.”
“And I was ready for you? Kid, nobody is ever ready for things like this. That doesn’t mean they don’t happen.” Levi is faced with the difficult decision of taking in his newly orphaned cousin. But he can't do it alone. You're a newly graduated college student looking to make some extra cash, but get more than you originally bargained for...
Word Count: 2.3K
--
The day had started just like any other day. He woke up early and worked out before making himself a small breakfast of tea and an English muffin with some jam. Then he got dressed for work in one of his perfectly tailored suits. His routine was flawless, perfected over many years to allow him to seamlessly slip from one task into the next. He arrived one full hour before work actually began so that he could organize his desk and get a jump on the day’s cleaning. He liked working in a clean environment, if this step was missed (or really any of them for that matter), his entire day was thrown off.
And today was one of those days. About four minutes before the office officially opened, Levi got a phone call. He had the phone wedged between his ear and his shoulder as he finished wiping down his desk with a clorox wipe.
“We regretfully inform you that your cousin and his wife were involved in an armed robbery.”
He froze at this, his eyes narrowing as the woman waited for his response.
“What was stolen?” He asked before continuing to wipe down the surface.
“Sir…” The woman spoke slowly and Levi began to lose his patience.
“Listen, I appreciate the phone call but quite honestly I don’t have time for this.” He said bitterly as he disposed of the wipe.
“This is very important sir, your cousin, and his wife were both murdered in the process.” The woman informed him and his blood ran cold. Although he had never been close with his extended family, the news was still tragic.
“I see,” Levi grumbled as a boulder seemed to settle in the pit of his stomach.
“I’m calling regarding their daughter, Mikasa. Seeing that Mr. Ackerman was an only child, as was Mrs. Ackerman, and their parents have passed, you and your uncle are her next of kin.” The woman continued as Levi sank into his chair and pinched the bridge of his nose.
“What do we need to do?” Levi sighed as he closed his eyes, waiting patiently for her response.
“You have a few options, either of you could gain full parental rights to her, or she will become a ward of the state.” Some shuffling could be heard on her end of the line and Levi felt his heart rate spike. For a time in his own life, he had been thrown into the system, that was until his own uncle had gained custody after sobering up.
“I understand,” Levi grumbled, watching as his coworkers set about their daily business as he was dealing with this unforeseen issue.
“The decision doesn’t need to be made immediately of course. I strongly encourage that the two of you discuss this at length. The funeral is this Thursday, Mikasa and myself will be there and we can talk in greater depth then.” The sound of a keyboard clacking filled the short silence as he considered what an appropriate response would be.
“I’ll...get back to you.” He leaned forward in his seat and clicked on his calendar, crossing out the lengthy list of tasks and replacing it with, FUNERAL.
“Thank you, and sorry for your loss.” He hung up the phone and reclined back into his seat. This was quite possibly the biggest disruption he would ever face in his life. He hated that his cousin and his shitty wife had left this burden to rest on his shoulders. But upon further thought, his own mother had done the same thing to his uncle. You know what they say: history repeats itself.
It seemed that as soon as he had set the phone down, it rang. His uncle’s contact lit up his screen and he let it ring three times before picking it up.
“Did ya hear?” Kenny’s deep voice crackled over his speaker and Levi grunted.
“Yeah, just got off of the phone with the social worker,” Levi informed him and Kenny hummed deeply.
“What do you think?” He pressed and Levi felt his annoyance increase by tenfold.
“I think that it’s a load of shit. And you?” Levi asked as he crossed his legs under his desk.
“Same here.” Kenny agreed.
“It’s not ideal, but we can’t let her go into foster care,” Kenny grumbled and Levi hummed his agreement. Kenny was right, even if she was distantly related, Mikasa was still a part of their family.
“So are you going to take custody then?” Levi scoffed, knowing damn well that Kenny was pushing fifty and had a chronic case of bad arthritis.
“Hell no, I’ve done my part by raising you.” Kenny laughed bitterly and Levi’s expression soured.
“It’s not like I’m ready to take her in.” Levi countered and Kenny let out another bark of laughter.
“And I was ready for you? Kid, nobody is ever ready for things like this. That doesn’t mean they don’t happen.” Kenny chuckled mirthfully as Levi shifted in his seat. He knew that Kenny was right, and he knew from the moment that the social worker had said that Mikasa needed someone, that it would be him taking her.
“I’ll need to get a bigger place then.” Levi sighed his fingers rubbing tight circles over his temple as he thought of his bachelor-sized apartment.
“Damn straight.” Kenny chuckled as Levi shot a look at the clock, it was nearly twenty minutes into the workday already.
“Look, I’m at work. I’ll talk to you on Thursday at the funeral.”
“See you then.” Kenny hung up and Levi let out a long exhale. His week was off to a terrible start.
--
In movies, funerals are usually held in dreary weather. But today was almost too beautiful for a funeral. It was late January and the ground was covered in a thick blanket of sparkling snow. As the coffins were lowered into the two holes the social worker held Mikasa on her hip. She was only four, and there was no way that she could fully grasp what had happened. Levi stood with his hands shoved deep inside of his pockets.
Kenny stood off to his left, a large distance between the two of them. There couldn’t have been more than seven people here, Levi assumed that they were friends of the family. The other attendees came up to him before and gave their condolences to Levi and Kenny, who both said nothing in return. The service was quick, Levi and Kenny had opted out of paying more than what the state offered. In Kenny’s own words, “Dead is dead, no fancy funeral is going to help them now.”
To some, it may seem heartless, but it was the way that the family coped with death. Once the funeral was over, Kenny and Levi joined the service worker to get a cup of coffee in a nearby cafe. She had passed Mikasa off to a brunette woman before leaving the cemetery. Levi assumed that she was the foster woman that they had placed her with, or possibly a family friend.
“So, I understand that you wish to gain custody?” Michelle was a middle-aged woman with graying hair and prominent wrinkles on her forehead. As she flipped through files that were spread across the table Levi nodded as he sipped his tea.
“That’s correct,” Levi affirmed and she nodded before spinning the paperwork so that he could read the form.
“I’m sure that you understand that this is no small commitment.” She spoke as she passed him a pen. He scoffed and began initialing and signing where necessary.
“Of course,” Levi grunted before flipping the page.
“Before you can gain full custody, the state will need to see some changes in your lifestyle, for starters, you’ll need to move within her current school district and continue to hold a steady job.”
“That shouldn’t be a problem,” Levi mumbled, pausing to read the paper before signing.
“Excellent, once these needs are met, she can be placed under your care,” Michelle informed as Levi skimmed over the page.
“Anything else?” Levi asked as he signed the last form presented to him.
“Not at this time, I’m sure that you’re well versed in most of our policies, seeing that the two of you went through a similar process.” Michelle continued as she neatly returned the papers to their folder.
“Yes.” Levi agreed as he brought his cup back to his lips. Kenny had been silent for most of the exchange. If Levi was being honest, he was relieved to have him there, even if he wasn’t contributing.
“Great, we’ll be in touch then.” Michelle smiled tensely before excusing herself, leaving Kenny and Levi alone at the table. Kenny finished his coffee and stood up, stretching with a loud groan.
“Well, I’m off to the office,” Kenny said with a short wave behind his shoulder. Levi watched him go, feeling a strange sense of dread settle into his gut. It all felt so surreal, even if he was thirty and most of his peers were already parents themselves, he still felt unprepared. It was just like Kenny had said, nothing could prepare him to take on this role. That didn’t mean that it wasn’t his to take, and he would be damned if he let Mikasa get thrown into the foster care system.
Levi set to work on finding a house in the district that the social worker had given him. He had never been a fan of suburbs, but at this time it was all that he could afford. So he found a decent house with four bedrooms, one for himself, one for Mikasa one for guests, and a final for a study. He was lucky enough to have a decent job, and a respectable grasp on his finances, it took him a week to finalize the buy, but in the end, he was glad that he did.
He had been meaning to get out of his stuffy apartment anyway, (or so he reasoned with himself), he moved his belongings out of his downtown apartment in less than a week. Once the house was effectively moved into, he then began the tedious process of preparing Mikasa’s things. He started by doing research on what four-year-olds needed and then set about buying the necessities. He felt out of place as he shopped through Target in the little girl’s section, buying bedding and such. But he got the job done, he knew that she had to have some clothes, and decided that he’d cross that bridge when he got there.
It was the night before Michelle was scheduled to visit, and Levi had invited Hange over for a drink. Hange had nosed around for about an hour, acquainting herself with Levi’s new space and gushing when she saw the modest room that he had prepared for Mikasa.
“I can’t believe that you’re actually going through with this!” Hange cooed as she sat on the small bed.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” He asked defensively as he propped himself on the doorframe. Honestly, he had been avoiding this room, it felt that if he acknowledged the space, the heavier the weight of the situation crushed his chest.
“I just...never thought that you liked kids. But I’m really proud of you.” Hange beamed as she smoothed out the pink comforter as she stood.
“What made you think that I didn’t like kids?” He scoffed as the pair left the room, he closed the door quietly behind them as they made their way into the kitchen.
“Oh I don’t know, maybe I just made the assumption based on your obsession with cleanliness.” Hange waved her hand dismissively and Levi clicked his tongue as he poured two glasses of wine.
“They are filthy.” Levi agreed as he brought the glass of red wine to his lips.
“What’s she like?” Hange asked, wrapping her own fingers around her glass as she eagerly awaited his response.
“....I haven’t met her.” Levi felt a wave of panic crash over his chest as Hange’s eyes widened.
“Never?” Hange couldn’t hide her astonishment.
“Never,” Levi said with a roll of his eyes.
“You’re serious?” Hange pressed and Levi glared at her.
“Do I ever joke about these things?” Levi snapped and she held her hands up in defeat.
“I’m just surprised is all,” Hange mumbled before taking a long sip of her wine.
“I wasn’t close with her parents,” Levi explained as he put the cork back on the bottle.
“Well...maybe you should take some extra time off of work,” Hange suggested and Levi sighed deeply.
“I can’t, I’ve already taken off more than I planned.” Levi sat on the barstool next to Hange and she swiveled to face him, their knees knocking against each other.
“But this is not something that you take lightly Levi. She’s a four-year-old girl who lost both of her parents. She’s going to need a lot of attention.” Hange looked concerned and Levi’s expression soured.
“I understand that, but my job is-”
“Is not your priority anymore. Have you thought about what you’re going to do for childcare yet? She’s too young for school. Or at least not full days.” Hange interrupted.
“So I’ll put her in daycare, or preschool.” Levi shrugged and Hange pursed her lips.
“That could work, but don’t you usually stay late at the office?” Hange pressed and Levi chewed on the inside of his cheek guiltily.
“Maybe you should consider getting a nanny. Plenty of my student’s nanny, I could give you some good recommendations.” She offered before lifting her glass to her lips.
“Maybe…” Levi suddenly felt way in over his head, if all went well in the morning, then Mikasa would be sent his way in nearly a week.
“I’ll ask around on Monday,” Hange said, reaching out to pat his shoulder. For once, he didn’t shy away.

Osblaineweek2021, Day 5: Clothes, gifts, intimacy- Headcanons
Nick is really bad at saying no to Holly when she wants something. If he has the money, he buys it for her, whether it’s an ice cream or a stuffed animal (and she has like a thousand of them at home already). He’s not much better when it comes to saying no to Hannah.
Both June and Nick know that big presents aren’t something the other needs at all, so they’re more into smaller, thoughtful gifts for special occasions.
June is half-serious when she says Nick’s impossible to buy anything for, because he always insists he already has everything he needs. So more often than not, she gives him time. They all go to the zoo, or a hockey game, or have a nice family picnic. Of course she also remembers to book time for just the two of them without the kids.
In their everyday life, Nick’s the one who often grabs June’s favorite wine at the store, or the candy she likes, and then lets her discover these small considerate surprises on her own.
Nick finds himself gravitating towards black clothes even when he’s free, much like June needs red to calm her down at times, he too needs the black to ease his anxiety over having been forced to wear certain clothes in Gilead. This is a compulsion they both have for the rest of their lives to a certain extent, but they work on it, and Nick even lets June take him shopping for some nice non-black numbers.
June likes wearing Nick’s clothes when she’s at home or on a run. She also sleeps in his clothes on a regular basis. They smell like him and make her feel closer to him when he’s not by her side.
Wearing suits makes Nick super uncomfortable after Gilead because they remind him of the things he was forced to do as a commander. So he rarely wears them, except for a nice blue one that June helps him pick out.
Nick and June are really into casual intimacy. A shared drink or food, a brush of hands in the middle of a busy day, her head on his shoulder when they watch TV.
At first they talk a lot more than they did in Gilead, because hey, now they can, and they have a future to discuss and there’s so much they still don’t know about each other. Eventually they start spending more time just being together in comfortable silence, having those nonverbal talks they’ve had since the beginning.
They both have bad days, and sometimes they both end up with them at the same time, and on those days they need each other more than ever because being together is the one thing that comforts and grounds them. Their connection was forbidden in Gilead but it always gave them solace and hope even there, and it's not any different when they're free.
Despite Nick’s tendency to keep things to himself, to him June is that one person he can speak freely to. Eventually he begins to loosen up and open up little by little, not only to June, but to other people he likes, such as Rita.
Sometimes their shared sense of humor comes out in the presence of others. June says something that nobody else in the room finds funny except for Nick (or vice versa), and he smirks, which is how everyone else knows the joke wasn’t even meant for them. Moira never fails to roll her eyes at their stupid inside jokes.

So originally this was going to be a AU/shitpost, inspired by this thing I’ve seen on Pinterest
But the more I think about this, the more I realize this would actually make a lot of sense
You see, I like the theories and all that Mirabel’s gift is that she’s the representation of the candle and all of that stuff. They’re cute. They’re sentimental.
But as a Mirabel stan, and one that is very broke, I can’t stand by and buy that bullshit
So Mirabel does have a gift, and it’s the ability to pause time.
It would make a lot of sense when you think about all the symbolism and stuff in the movie. Obviously this is because of my imagination and probably not the direction the Encanto crew was trying to make this go, but it’s a thing now.
Here’s the evidence:
Mirabel is heavily associated with butterflies. While usually they are associated with change and renewal, probably the most opposite thing to pausing time, the point is they are associated with time in general. Also, if you had the ability to pause time, you could change a lot of things without nobody stopping you. There’s also the butterfly effect, the whole thing where a flap of a butterfly’s wings can cause a tornado on the other side of the world, or something like that. Like how if one were to pause time and did something, the result could spiral outward like this.
Mirabel’s glasses. This is the shitposting part of the evidence. They are green. What also is green? Bruno. What does Bruno have? The gift to see into the future, a.k.a, a time-based ability. They are seen to have a close relationship together. Also, Mirabel is a problem solver. She pays attention to details. She’s good at nitpicking and noticing things that other people don’t notice. So good, in fact, one can’t help but to wonder how she notices these things in the spur of a moment. Almost as if the laws of time don’t apply to her, as if she has the ability to pause time to have the time to notice them.
Then there’s the whole not getting a room thing and her living in the nursery. What type of room would one get if they had the ability to pause time? All the other Madrigals (presumably) have rooms that help them practice with their powers (Isabela’s with her flowers, Bruno with all his sand, Antonio with his room of animals, etc.) That, and this is when Abuela stopped seeing her family as her family and father as their gifts, because she was stuck in time thinking of Pedro and the community and not in the present. Mirabel staying in the nursery is showing that her family and Abuela are stuck in the past and still see Mirabel as a kid who is just always in the way, not as her present self.
There’s also how Mirabel gets the front door of the house and technically the house is her entire room. This shows a new time of her family seeing each other as family, not as gifts. They’re not stuck in the past anymore.
Then there’s the lyrics to Waiting on a Miracle, which includes the following lyrics:
I will stand on the side
I can’t take another night up in my room
Waiting on a miracle (it’s the title of the song for god’s sake)
Always waiting
Like I’m still at that door longing to shine (sounds like someone’s stuck in the past 😒)
I can’t stay on the side
Someone please just let me know, where do I go?
Show this family something new
I’ve been patient, and steadfast, and steady
Bless me now as you blessed us all those years ago
Am I too late for a miracle?
Finally, here’s the piece of cake: Mirabel wouldn’t obviously notice that she has this ability (because usually the gifts are indicated with the doors and as I just said the house made her stay in the nursery to show that she is quite literally stuck in the past). We’ve all had those moments where we felt like time has slowed down and stopped completely. Then there’s the whole “Waiting on a Miracle” ordeal. She would surely notice her quite literally stopping time, right? No. She’s too busy being all main-character and singing abou her problems, thinking what’s happening is just her imagination or something like that. I know for a fact that I probably wouldn’t notice that I paused time if I was too busing being a main character. That and with no room to practice said powers, she would really not know how to control it and such. Like with the other powers—eventually you would start noticing that you could make things grow, see the future, lift heavy objects, etc. all the other gifts the Madrigals have are aggressively noticeable, even if it takes some time to figure them out. But the ability to pause time? When would Mirabel ever notice that? If she can’t control it, how can she even activate it? It’s all in the spur of the moment, and when it does happen, it’s too of a short period to actually notice it or just blame the day on being slow.
So to sum it all down: instead is some sentimental nonsense where her gift is being the human representation of the candle or the caretaker of the family or shit like that, she does have the gift to pause time. She just probably would never notice it or have the ability to control it.

Synopsis: there’s a fine line between love and hate and you and Peter dance it on a regular basis
Series Masterlist and Regular Masterlist
“Would you stay with me?” You asked timidly, assuming the answer would be a definite no.
“Of course.” Peter nodded, making you recall the time your dad told you he would surprise you. Peter sat down next to you, giving you your space but still close enough to comfort you. You heard him chuckle after a beat of silence and looked at him curiously.
“You know, that’s the first time you ever called me Peter.” He commented, looking at you with a half smile.
“I’ve called you Peter before.” You insisted in your hoarse voice.
“No. I would’ve remembered if you did.” He chuckled. “You always call me Parker.”
“Oh. I guess I do.” You realized as Peter reached forward and wiped your tear with his thumb. You held eye contact with his and he dragged his thumb down your cheek, letting his warmth assuage your pain.
“Thanks.” You mumbled, giving him a weak smile.
“No problem.” Peter said sincerely. “This is the longest we’ve been in a room together without yelled at each other. It’s also the closest you’ve ever let me near you.”
“Sorry.” You said as you got ready to move. “I can move over-“
“No, it’s okay.” Peter stopped you by placing a hand on your arm. “I want you close.”
You pulled your bottom lip between your teeth to hide how happy his sentence made you. Despite how awful you treated him, he was always kind to you. Usually his generosity made you even angrier, but you didn’t have the strength to hate him tonight.
“You shouldn’t be nice to me. I’ve never been nice to you.” You shook your head and look down at the box of tissues in shame.
“I believe in treating people how you’d like to be treated. You’re also letting me be nice to you, which is a nice change.” Peter cracked a smile as he brushed your wilting curls out of your face. You leaned into his hand for a moment, closing your eyes as you finally felt peace.
“I don’t hate you.” You said suddenly, making Peter raise his eyebrows. “You said I hated you before. I don’t, really. I’m sorry I made you think I did.”
“I’m sorry too. I know this hasn’t been easy for you. I didn’t even want to move in. Mr. Stark insisted, he thought I’d be able to keep you company.” Peter laughed slightly, feeling the irony of his statement.
“Then why did you?” You wondered. You always thought it had been Peters idea to move in as a way to reap the full benefits of being an Avenger, but it turned out you were wrong.
“My aunt just got this job at a charity and she absolutely loves it, it just takes up all her time.” Peter explained. “It’s the first time I’ve seen her happy since my uncle passed and I didn’t want her to chose between her job and taking care of me, so I moved in here. I…I didn’t know Mr. Stark was gonna take me on all the missions and stuff.” Peter said softly. “I never meant to take your place.”
You opened your mouth and quickly shut it, feeling incredibly stupid and guilty for how you’d been treating him.
“I didn’t know that. Any of that, I didn’t...I didn’t know.” You said quietly as your eyes filled with regret.
“You and I don’t talk much.” Peter shrugged sadly. You tilted your head to the side, looking at him sympathetically in an entirely new light.
“You were right before, you know.” You told him. “I am jealous of you for being my dads favorite.”
“Y/n, I was just saying that.” Peter apologized. “That’s not how I really feel and it’s definitely not true.”
You looked straight ahead at your deep blue bedroom walls and let out a sigh, knowing the impending conversation wouldn’t be easy.
“He wanted a boy.” You said after a beat of silence, busying yourself with your fingernails so you wouldn’t have to look at him.
“What?”
“When he adopted me. He wanted a boy.” You explained further, feeling a blush of embarrassment cover your face and neck.
“I’m sure that’s not true.” Peter shook his head as he shifted a little closer.
“Yes it is.” You smiled sadly. “They did all these family matching events at my foster home when I was a kid and he would always stop by. I always saw him talking to the boys. He never signed any papers though, I think he was just browsing.” You chuckled, and Peter did too.
“You don’t have to tell me if it’s difficult to talk about.” Peter said kindly as he rested a hand on your knee.
“I want to tell you so you can understand.” You insisted, feeling like this was your best shot at an apology.
“Okay. I’m listening.”
“I never got picked.” You came outright with it. “I would show up to these events in my best dress and biggest smile and watch all my friends get taken home by some family, even if it was just for a test run, but nobody ever picked me. It gets to you after a while.”
“I’m sorry. I had no idea.” Peter sympathetically squeezed your knee.
“No, it’s okay. If some other family had wanted me, I wouldn’t have ended up with my dad.”
“You’re really strong for being able to see the bright side of all this. I don’t know what I would’ve done.” Peter shook his head as he got a look into your history.
“I appreciate that.” You smiled softly at him, letting him know you were no longer upset.
“How did you end up with Mr. Stark?” Peter wondered.
“He came pretty late one day, after an event had been going on for a while. He had Pepper with him that time, I guess he finally convinced her to come. By the time he arrived, all the boys had already been taken, and I could just see the disappointment in his face. Then he made eye contact with me.” You smiled to yourself. “I had seen him there so many times, but this was the first time we interacted. I had on this fluffy pink princess dress to make myself look more presentable. He saw me and laughed.”
“Princess. That’s why he calls you princess.” Peter made the connection.
“So you’re not as dumb as I thought.” You teased him, playfully this time, as you nudged him. “He bent down in front of me and asked if I’d like to live in his castle for the week, and I said yes. After the week was up, he brought a suitcase to my foster home. He said my suitcase matched his because we were a family now. It was the first thing that had ever been mine, you know? Not a hand me down or anything. It was mine. Those suitcases are all worn out now, but we still use them for every mission. At least, we used to.”
“Thats why you were upset he threw his out. Y/n, I’m sorry. I didn’t know any of this. You never - - You don’t talk to me.” Peter’s voice was pained as he got the full picture of why the fight had upset you as much as you did.
“I know. And I’m sorry for that. I know this doesn’t justify why I treat you the way I do, but I hope it explains it a little.” You looked at him apologetically. “It’s dumb but I always saw those suitcases as a symbol of our family. And then he goes and throws them out to buy one for you. Not that I would need one anyway since he stopped bringing me on missions and I just, I don’t know, I felt replaced.”
“That’s not dumb.” Peter insisted. “Mr. Stark likes having me around but I could never replace you. You’re his daughter. I know he spends a lot of time with me but that doesn’t mean he wanted a boy.”
“That’s not the only thing, though.” You continued. “When I got to his house for the first time, before the tower was even built, he already had a room set up. Blue walls and little shirts with sports slogans on them told me what I already knew. He wanted a boy. He wanted you.”
“Bold of you to assume I’d ever wear a shirt with a sports slogan on it.” Peter slipped a joke in, making you chuckle softly.
“Yeah, well. You check all his other boxes.” You reminded him. “You’re smarter than me, better at technology than I am, and you’re a freaking superhero for crying out loud. I can’t do half the things you can and he knows it. And when you guys save the world together or build these amazing inventions, it’s like you’re rubbing in all the things I could never do with him. It just reminds me that you’re what he wanted.”
“So are you. He loves you.”
“I don’t doubt he loves me. I just doubt I’d be his first choice.” You shrugged sadly. “You and I are both orphans and if you hadn’t had your aunt and uncle to take care of you, you would’ve ended up in the same place as me. And if you had been there that day at the event…”
“You think Mr. Stark would’ve chosen me, not you.” Peter finished your sentence, and everything made sense to him at once.
“Yeah.” You whispered as tears filled your red rimmed eyes once again. “I’m sorry I don’t call you by your name. I’m sorry I’m mean to you and push you away. But you have to understand, you’re not someone I ever wanted to know. And when you say things like him preferring you, I believe you.”
“I never should’ve said that. I wish we had this conversation when I first moved in.” Peter sighed heavily. “I would’ve understood you so much better. And I…I wanted to understand you.”
“You did?” You jerked your head back in surprise at his statement.
“Yeah. It was kinda a bummer when I realized my mentors extremely beautiful and intelligent daughter hated me.” Peter chuckled as he rubbed the back of his neck. “He talked so highly of you, I wish you could’ve heard it. He’s this world famous billionaire inventor and superhero and his greatest accomplishment is his daughter. It made me really excited to meet you. And then…”
“And then I made your life hell.” You squeezed your eyes shut in embarrassment as you finished his sentence. “I’m sorry, Peter.”
“It’s okay. I still liked you, even if you were mean to me.” He smiled sheepishly. “I could tell you were funny and nice from when I heard you talking to other people. I just didn’t understand why you didn’t like me.”
“I feel like we could’ve been really good friends by now if I hadn’t been so quick to judge you.” You pouted as you looked at him. “I thought you were taking advantage of my dads money of something. You’re actually a really good guy. I should’ve listened the first 50 times me dad told me that.”
“We can still be friends. I think I’ll be around a while.” He teased your usual hatred of him being around as he bumped his shoulders against yours. You laughed as you moved together, feeling grateful for the second chance he was giving you. Something he had said clung to the back of your mind and in the name of being honest, you brought it up.
“Do you…do you really think I’m beautiful?” You asked curiously as you looked at him. A blush spread from Peters nose bridge all the way to the tips of his ears when he realized you caught his subtle compliment.
“Um, don’t you?” He shrugged, answering your question with a question to put the ball back in your court. Your lips twitched into a smile before you looked away, feeling flustered in place of your usual disdain.
“To answer your question from before, my date was lame.” You shrugged. “Harry was on his phone the whole time, something about fantasy football? I don’t know, I wasn’t listening. Rich people are like, super boring.”
“I thought you liked him? Last I heard, you wanted to be his girlfriend.” Peter couldn’t help from rolling his eyes as he spoke.
“Oof.” You clicked your tongue. “If you haven’t figured out by now that I played up my feelings for Harry to make you jealous, then maybe you’re not smarter than me.”
“You wanted to make me jealous?” Peter repeated for confirmation. “It worked, but why?”
“Do you want to know the number one thing that annoyed me about you?” You asked him, the fight a distant memory now.
“I don’t know. Do I?” Peter chuckled as he rested his head in his hands to look at you.
“No matter how much I disliked you,” you shook your head and shrugged slightly, “I always liked you more.”
“I thought you said you would never like me.” Peter recalled, a hopeful smile tugging at his lips.
“Yeah, well,” you moved closer to him, sitting on his thigh and resting your hand on his shoulder, “I guess I had a change of heart.”
“Well.” Peter looked up at you with a fire in his eyes. “What ever am I going to do about that?” He said slowly as he drummed his fingers on your leg.
“Yeah. What are you gonna do about it, Parker?” You brought back his old nickname to really push him.
“I have a few ideas, Princess.” Peter mumbled before crashing his lips to yours. Your hands immediately went to his hair, tugging it for all the times he made you stressfully tug at yours.
“You drive me crazy with all your eye rolling.” Peter said between kisses as he pushed you down on the bed. “Nobody is that annoyed all the time.”
“Every time I saw you in the lab I hoped you’d burn your hand on the benson burner.” You confessed as you trailed kisses on his jawline.
“I hate when you leave your cereal bowls out. Do you know how disgusting almond milk looks when it’s left out? Ugh it made me so mad.” Peter groaned as he pinned you to the bed.
“I hate when you’re in the kitchen when I’m baking. You’re so annoying.” You whined, tilting your head up to kiss him.
“You’re so annoying.” He shot back as he pulled you closer.
“I cannot stand you.” You shook your head before kissing him again. “At all.”
“That makes two of us, princess.” Peter gave you a cocky smirk as his hand traveled up your leg.
“I told you not to call me that, daddy.” You shot back, making Peter gulp. You laughed wickedly and propped yourself up on your elbows. “Thats what I thought. You’re all talk.”
“That wasn’t fair.” He growled, teeth grazing your earlobe now.
“You just can’t handle it.” You teased him.
“I think I’m in love with you.” Peter said simply as he pulled his shirt over his head.
“Same.” You laughed at the irony. “Now shut up and kiss me.”
