no because really, i think stede is operating in a way he thinks will win him respect. i think he's operating in a way he thinks is the expectation. i don't think he likes it, and i don't think it's "him," but i think he enjoys the positive reinforcement from everyone around him. he's literally never had that before in his life.
he was bullied as a child for what he enjoyed. he was cast aside by his father for being himself. the crew threatened to mutiny against him or even just flat-out kill him because he was too "weak."
and here he is trying to pull himself up out of maelstrom of mistakes. "he's been a failure his whole life." he's trying to do everything he can to rectify that. he wants to be the lighthouse for his crew. he wants to be a good captain. he wants to be a good pirate. he wants to be a good lover. he wants to be something.
and he was actually getting there himself--he just didn't realize it. listening to his crew more, showing them kindness, leading them when they were lost and had no place to go, putting his own grief on hold and taking back the revenge...
he was getting there! but still, he was surrounded by those haunting expectations, by the fear that it wasn't enough.
the whole conversation between he and ed where ed is encouraging him to command respect/be tougher. the whole conversation between he and izzy where izzy says he's "never met anyone with a total lack of skills." zheng saying that she didn't "conquer china by letting people go on and on about their feelings."
not to mention the goading from ned. "once you kill me, you're a real pirate. you're not an amateur." "see? that's why he likes you. your bumbling amateur status."
it all keeps swimming circles around him, looming above his head like a shadow.
he thinks he has something more to prove. he thinks he has to be more. even though his own methods work, like ned's crew turning on him simply because stede showed kindness and understanding, all these phantoms keep telling him it isn't enough and that the other methods are more effective.
because he kills, and looks visibly shaken by it, but his crew cheers. he grabs ed by the collar despite them wanting to take things slow, and they grow intimate. he walks into jackie'z after it all, a place where he was previously banished from, and is treated like a sort of pirate hero.
it's not him. "we don't just banish people, do we? that's not us."
but it's encouraged. it's celebrated. so he thinks it should be.
one thing i honestly love about both "breaking bad" and "better call saul" is that it openly admits to the fact that breaking the rules and doing bad things can be fun. the characters don't always just do bad things because they have no other choice or because they're forced into it or because they are working towards a greater goal of doing something Good: sometimes they just do it because its pleasurable. because lying and pulling off schemes and fucking people over feels good sometimes. because its Easy. even the "good" characters do it. sometimes they face consequences for it, sometimes they don't, but the show doesn't subscribe to any one philosophy about Why people do bad things and is honest in saying that yeah, sometimes they have no other option, but sometimes they do have other options and still choose to do it because it makes them Feel Good.
Your wavs are so wonderful. I love them! Can you say “achoo” through your build up until you actually sneeze?
Thank you so much!~ I'm glad you enjoy~
These are actually some of my favourite requests to hear, I've requested a few myself actually, so I'm happy to fulfill this!~ Might do another longer one at some point, as this is just a short thing~
aaaaaaaand I am currently catsitting, and had a few interruptions from my lovely little friend, so kitty bloopers (and short video of the lil guy) under the cut!
I also find it funny that fandom will only accept Lyanna being her non-conforming, wild self in the context of saying that Arya isn't meant to be pretty; Any other day we get back-to-back posts about how Lyanna is actually super traditionally feminine cause she sniffled at a song once, so she's actually more like Sansa. Instead of constantly speaking on Arya and Lyanna, how about you guys reflect on why your standards of beauty for women are attached to how well they perform feminity within the patriarchy?
You know when you watch movies set in the past or fantasy movies, and when you get the epic pre-battle scenes you inevitably ask yourself why do they need all those drummers and stuff when all those men playing could be given a sword or something and be added to the troops? I am currently visiting a medieval festival and I just heard an exibition of war drums and I feel like I could run a half marathon. The drummers make so much sense.
I'm surprised you haven't posted any Welcome home stuff recently! Honestly kinda makes me sad since I love your WH art and stuff
yea y'all are gonna have to be Patient w/ me bc
a) i have like. a week left to pack all of my stuff before i need to shove everything into a uhaul and leave, so its crunch time! leaving little to no energy/interest in anything else
b) to be honest my mental health is the worst its been in years - which is fine, its whatever, i can deal. it's not as bad as it could be and im handling it! like a champ, even! but also its leaving little to no energy/interest in anything else
c) had a minor crisis over my art and how i interact w/ WH, and i realized im not scribbling enough of what I want. ive mostly been trying to please people and do as asked and thats! not good! so i want to temper expectation & reassert that im Not a WH art blog - its just a hyperfixation / something i love rn. i draw what i enjoy & what i want in the moment.
In light of recent news, I'd like to share my stance on this.
I absolutely stand with the victims. This is horrible horrible news, and as someone who has experienced SA, I am incredibly disappointed and stand with others who have had similar experiences.
But I don't think there's enough information to jump to conclusions yet.
I'm not going to defend Neil and insist he didn't do it because I don't know him, I never did, and I never will. But on the other hand, I'm not going to say he absolutely did it.
As of now, we have an article and a true crime podcast as evidence (which I've heard is run by some transphobic individuals, but please, correct me if im wrong), and it simply isn't enough to say for sure what happened.
Since hearing the news, I have unfollowed Neil, and I've tried to find as much information as I can. Which is what I implore everyone to do. Research.
And as for the Good Omens fandom:
While I have abandoned things I've enjoyed in the past due to shitty creator behavior, it's too much of a safe space for me to completely leave. We shouldn't let this change how we interact with each other. We shouldn't let this shake our compassion for one another. I don't think we should feel guilty for enjoying something that makes us happy. If Neil Gaiman is indeed this terrible of a human, don't let that stop us from being kind to each other. I have faith that as a fandom, we will move on from this, even if it's without Neil. Don't let a shitty creator prevent you from enjoying something and letting you be creative.
haven't listened to the anthology yet, but i do think her music is suffering from the sheer quantity she's putting out while doing all this other stuff tbh. feels more like an overproduced electronic cashgrab than real layered music despite some tortured lyrics. like ttpd the first half has such a sameness to over half of it.... and that sameness is tied to midnights too imo. i really wish i could experience the joy of albums like 1989/folklore/evermore and def her country earlier stuff but. she can be a lyric writing machine (she needs someone to veto some of it thoughnfjdkfjd feels like no one can tell her no) but not lean on the exact same production style for this long bc it's kinda getting old to me and i really do enjoy so much of her discography like 😭😭😭 idk. i know swifties are just gonna eat up whatever she does, and i've always been in between the absolute worshipping crowd and the absolute hater crowd but some of the music/production part is so uninspired.
