Okay so, awkward question, but does anyone know where I can find a purity ring for sims? TW: for spiritual abuse, purity ring imagery, the ickier parts of Christianity

Ah, Ofc!! this will be a long post, because you said 'quick' and i just heard 'explain everything'. just because I don't know HOW to summarise everything, so I just explain what I can... which is too much.

each section will have a TL;DR if it's long, though.

So, the only rewrite I’ve actually, like, done so far is Amaranth (https://archiveofourown.org/works/31310384)

It’s an MCD rewrite, the first one I did, and it’s not **technically** related to my overall rewrite universe, though I’m not going to totally discredit it. It’s where I got a lot of my ideas, and it was sort of a first draft for me. It’s very similar to MCD, just with events changed to how I would have written them myself. Major change is that the Zane/aphmau engagement actually goes somewhere. My favourite change was the Pikoro arc tho for some reason bc it was just my first significant deviation from the original plot.

Now… cannibalism and cult stuff, yeah?

Lycoris Radiata (https://archiveofourown.org/works/50710504) is the only part of this current era of rewrite!Aphverse that has any content so far.

TL;DR for this section: i mostly just emphasised themes present in canon, there's cannibalism for magical reasons, Shad is more relevant early on, and there's a reason why characters look like that when i draw them, i promise. Also, cult stuff!

LR is an MCD rewrite, which has some lore changes. It begins with Avra (Aphmau) travelling with Visher, Garroth being angsty, and so on. Only the prologue and first chapter are currently posted, and you don't need to read Amaranth to begin it (though it will follow similar storylines later on). Basically, the main premise is that it’s kind of a criticism of imperialism, organised religion, and so on. Those are themes already present in original MCD, and so I… expanded. Blood Magic is the main magic focused on as well. It's the kind that Avra uses, and it's the kind that makes SKs function. Avra has to consume blood and meat (typically organ meat, preferably human) in order to have any amount of magic, and depending on what creature the meat comes from, also grants her some fun little magical extras. She also has a strong association with Judgement(Shad) in my rewrite, and there is a reason I draw them so often together. Most character changes you'll see have some lore-based backing for it. Characters who are made darker-skinned, or have had their haircolour changed, it's typically due to them belonging to a particular ethnic group that i made for Ru'Aun or Tu'La, which does impact their characters in the way that they obviously grew up under certain cultures. Sometimes it'll just be because I think it looks cool, or for visual/thematic parallels with another character. If you're ever curious as to knowing why i have certain characters looking the way I do, then just ask. Oh, also, people aren't just loyal to Avra because she's nice. there's like an actual cult thing that begins happening and to say there's some weird shit with that would be... underselling it.

A Royal Tale, and Mermaid Tales both fall into the timeline between LR and the MyS rewrite. they're quite insignificant series, but i decided to devote myself to being a completionist.

My plans for them aren't really set in stone yet, but I know i want to expand upon them and their lore a lot more, and they will eventually both fall into the, uh, cannibalism and murder theme of the rest of the rewrites. they'll likely be little side projects. I have trauma from ART tho. Show makes me *uncomfy*

TL;DR: If you let an edgy teenager write MyS but they also watched desperate housewives so they write some sitcom episodes on the side. Also, Avra needs that gross-tasting nailpolish that stops you from chewing on your nails... but like... all over her body.

Basically, MyS except they've always been reincarnations of their MCD (or LR, in this case) selves, with some residual trauma and habits because of that. I'm going to lean more into the darker seasons, even though Ik popular opinion is that the light-hearted ones were the best, and I'll just focus more on lore and stuff. PDH has a 17 year old Avra joining PDH, after being homeschooled for a while due to having some mental health issues. I'm going to go a little more 'general highschool drama' vibes, might have some mystery shit idk. Will be less cringe than canon, because yes, i'm cringe and i'm free, but even i have limits. The more lighthearted seasons might just be amalgamed into one big 'sitcom style' fic, which will be set before S4 and such, but i'll probably make lighthearted chapters between the serious ones. S4, Aphmau's Year, S5, S6 and Her Wish will be my main priority, and will go into the whole murder and cannibalism theme of LR. It'll already have been kind of expanded upon, because MyS!Avra has a bit of a habit of auto-cannibalism (eating the skin around her nails/on her fingers, on the inside of her cheeks and on her lips) which eventually just... goes a little crazy. There is gonna be cult stuff in MyS too, it just might present differently to how it does in LR. Or maybe similarly. Idk, depends on how you view it.

When did Gangle realize she actually likes Jax romantically? How did Jax react to that?

Like, in a general scenario? I have a lot of different ideas for that scenario (namely because we know so little about the characters so far there's a lot to work with--because there's so little to work with).

Umm but I guess in a scenario where Gangle falls first, its actually really sad for her. Crushes are weird like that, Gangle knows better than to fall for someone like Jax but she does anyways. Kind of hates herself for it.

Finds out herself when she starts ironically, enjoying his company. Finds him funnier than usual. Feels a bit giddy when she's around him. Wants to spend time with him, despite how he ends up treating her. Which is why she hates herself for this. Why Jax of all people? Her heart flutters but her mind knows better and rightfully dislikes him.

But it's fine. Infatuations pass, no one will ever know.

And I'm not sure how Jax would find out because she wouldn't confess, and wouldn't make it obvious either, but honestly it probably happens by accident.

Jax is being horribly flirty because it makes people uncomfortable but notices she's not reacting with the usual disgust because her mind slips into fantasies about this being real, and unlikely scenarios of her flirting back, and some how being a sweet couple. It's not possible but their minds tend to over-wander in this place even over the little things.

Jax catches it and starts teasing her about red cheeks "what dirty thoughts are you thinking about?" She shakes her head in defense. Says "its not about that." Wrong choice of words.

Jax rebuttals with something more domestic, joking about them living in a happy little house together, and that hits Gangle hard because of course he guesses right, and of course he says it in a way that breaks her feeble little feel-good fantasy. She knows it wasn't possible but some how having it thrown at her shatters it, and her. So she just cries, looking completely crushed and Jax laughs because he really didn't expect that reaction, as well as being right.

Starts making fun of her for liking him, and she just stands their taking it, crying. He's not wrong, and of course he rubs salt in the wound. Dunks her bleeding form in sea water. Kicks her while she's down. That's what he's known for after all.

Eventually starts making his leave still laughing about it. When he's finally some place quieter his mind starts over-wandering next. How could she fall for someone like him? How desperate can you be. Not that he isn't a charmer that is, he corrects himself. But is more offended by someone like Gangle falling for him. This place really does make you crazy. She must be losing it to ever see Jax as a form of comfort and capable of love.

And yet his brain swims more about it. Isn't that sweet though? That despite everything she has some how fallen for him? Nah-uh, it's gross if anything. Don't be so childish, always with the immaturity. Hits his head to stop the thoughts and continues on.

TL;DR: Gangle finds out when she realizes she likes being around him. And Jax reacts by making fun of her for it, but she's in his brain now.

if i had a nickle for the amount of times that infanticide happens in MP and the mom hooks up with their kids' murderer like hubba hubba, i'd have two and that's two nickles too fucking many. It's just such a gross aspect of the series that gets defended way too much by the fandom and I get the reasoning but it's still all kinds of stupid/disturbing and I hate how the fandom tries to normalize it while also demanding we relate to these characters on a personal level god lmao

OK, several things to those who try and ram this shit down our throats:

Lionesses will actually fight to the death to defend their cubs. They don't just sit by and shrug and go 'well my made up religion says that this is fine so marry me plz'. As for the argument that they turn off the emotion tap for a biological reason: that's not established and we also have Powerstrike and other characters expressing grief when the pride loses Sharptongue, for example. Why is that not expressed for their cubs who were murdered and had their whole lives ahead of them?

Speaking of the made-up religion: these lions have a made-up religion and societies and homophobia and lions running around with earrings lol. Either we suspend our disbelief and take personal lessons about humanity from these lions on board and not question why they wear fucking earrings or treat these lions as real lions: you cannot have both.

My Pride actually fucked up on lion behaviour as much as everything else it tried to cover. Males generally don't fight to the death because they have literal floof armour covering their neck (so no, Quickmane would not have been able to kill Starmane like he did in reality). They're also not active during the day, more than one male can exist in a pride, prides are generally a lot more complex than 'one dude takes charge', I could literally go on for days... So uh - no, this is not 'how real lions behave'. National Geographic is a thing, try it out. I honestly wouldn't have minded the more brutal aspects of My Pride if it had made its damn mind up on what it wanted to be in the dozens of re-writes it went through. You can't expect people to treat this as a deconstruction of human issues but then let things like baby killing slide because 'lol realism'. That's a major contradiction. Especially when that realism is actually rooted in their made-up religion and is never actually about 'how lions behave' in terms of the show's actual universe? so as soon as he graduates to go to college, get an internship, enter the journalism field, travel all over the world... he realizes how even HIS view of the limits of expression are... well... limited. he feels more free to try new things, wear bold patterns, paint his nails, do his hair in even more interesting styles. as he learns new languages he also learns all new ways to describe gender and expression and sexuality. in the end, he realizes doesn't really need defined labels; he's simply oushirou, and he's going to look beautiful and handsome and charming and sexy and flirty for anyone and everyone who's willing to give him their time.

when he shows up at the 10 year seigetsu reunion, wearing a zebra stripe suit with polkadot tie, red aviators, black nails, and an intricately styled hair-do, it catches everyone a little off guard... but they quickly lean into the bold changes when they see just how much more comfortable and self-assured he seems.

“Oh, you doubt the power of a true pervert? Kuhihi~”

He begins to move, and Ro closes their eyes and tenses, preparing for the usual onslaught of wriggling fingers and wet, sloppy, gross kisses...

The weight on the bed shifts, and two warm arms wrap around their waist.

A quick kiss at the corner of their eye.

“…Did you get a lot of work done?”

Their shoulders relax, and a sigh escapes them as they look up into his face, much closer now than it was before. “Enough…I guess. It’s hard to say at this point.” The work of a freelancer is never done, after all.

“So then,” his hands slowly, gently travel up and down their arms, “how about a nice, relaxing, eight-to-ten-hour sleep break with me, hmm?” He moves his head to the crook of their neck, nuzzling into it. Ro brings one hand to his long hair and begins running their fingers through, the other rubbing his shoulders and back. “Just you, me, and this big ol’ comfy bed. Ah, and your pants-less legs, of course~!” He grins against their neck.

“As long as you don’t look at them, mister.”

“Oh c'mooooon, don’t pull the ‘mister’ thing on me right before bed! It makes me feel so oooold and formal. You’re so mean, sir.” He looks up from his comfortable neck-crook long enough to wipe a fake tear from his eye and pout at their serious face.

A few seconds pass, the two staring intensely at each other, before Ro huffs and breaks into a small smile. They lean forward and give Oushirou a light peck on the lips, and as they lean back to lie on the bed, his lips eagerly follow theirs, wanting more.

he travels all the time, all over the world, so he tries to bring back little trinkets from all of the places he's been. just tiny painted keepsakes. i keep them displayed on a shelf as a reminder of just how much he's been able to do, how far he's been able to go, and how many people he's met.

and while bringing back cooked food with him would be... difficult, he does sometimes bring back interesting recipes from those who are willing to share. when we meet up again, he buys some ingredients, borrows the kitchen, and cooks something to allow me to experience a small taste of the places he went to.

Evidence and reasons to ship Sophiana that literally no one asked for

Disclaimer: I myself am a multi-shipper, so I ship both Sophiana AND Dexiana (and sokeefe of course), but anyway here's my reasoning for Sophiana (no hate to the other ships). This is WAYYYYY overly long and my adhd brain is crying trying to proof-read it so fair warning

1. Representation in this series. Even though I know it probably won't happen with these two, I can still dream. 

2. Both Sophie and Biana are strong independent females who have been sucked (mainly unknowingly) into love triangles in the midst of whatever mess is going on with the Neverseen. 

3. In the beginning of the series, Biana seemed to hate Sophie, but after persuasion from Alden, became friends with Sophie. From there, the two of them have had a couple of rocky moments (Alden's memory break, where she didn't hate Sophie, she just wouldn't talk to her or anyone, which is less harmful of a reaction that Fitz's. Also when Stina reveals that Biana became friends with Sophie initially because of her dad) but overall have been growing into good friends. 

Now for my evidence (be forewarned there's a LOT, but still not all my evidence bc I mainly skimmed through my books I had on hand): 

Book 1: 

Fitz in the first book is shocked when Sophie says she thinks Biana hates her, stating that they're  pretty similar (first book, I don't remember the page number or exact quote). 

 Page 272, in general, when Sophie hands Biana her midterms present, and Biana asks if she's coming over for dinner. After that interaction, both Dex and Maruca (Biana's best friend at the time) are glaring at Sophie. Maruca's reaction can be explained by being best friends and feeling like she's losing Biana (though hmm....), but Dex's reaction is a bit harder to explain, thus my reasoning. Dex at this time has a major crush on Sophie, and yes he hates the Vackers, but that doesn't explain why he's mad at Sophie, unless he feels like he has competition from Biana for Sophie's affections, and is glaring to try and stop her from forgetting he's an option (oh boy my poor child). 

Also just through the rest of this book, when Sophie is having troubles or avoiding her, Biana is actually worried, and cares about her friend, not lashing out at her, just wondering if she's going to come over, and being obviously disappointed when Sophie declines her invitations. "She's right though. Red is definitely your color." 

Book 2: 

Page 567. "'Uh, I've always known that,' Dex said, sitting on her other side. 'But remember? I like weird.' 'Me too,' Biana chimed in." We know later that this statement from Dex was him literally saying that he liked Sophie, but the big thing about this is that Biana agrees immediately after. Before Fitz agrees. This could be read as just friends, but I read it otherwise. 

Book 3: Page 590. Biana is fighting Gisela on Mount Everest, in extreme conditions. Sophie looks at her and is like "Did you know Biana could fight like that?" like she's impressed, and I mean it's very impressive because she's taking down an adult in extreme conditions, but they're in the middle of a fight, and Sophie takes the time to notice and point out Biana's fighting skills. Which seems a little bit ship-y. Later on this page she is written as smiling at imagining Biana fighting Fitz and Keefe and smiling, and then screaming when Biana almost dies, along with Biana's former crush (Keefe) and her brother (Fitz). 

Page 511. Biana literally hides in Magnate Leto's office when Sophie was getting her ability restricting circlet (HIGHLY FORBIDDEN AND DANGEROUS) and watches in silent support. She breaks so many rules doing that, and then to top it off, on this page she says she doesn't "think I could've been that brave." Which is extremely sweet given the circumstances, and knowing just how much she risked going in with Sophie and yet calling Sophie the brave one, it's just very sweet. 

Book 4: 

(Oh boy I love this one there's so much fuel here.) 

 Page 9. "Dex pretended to gag, while Biana stared at Keefe's arm around Sophie." This is generally read as Biana being jealous of Sophie getting Keefe's attention, but it can also be read as Biana being jealous of Keefe being able to get that close to Sophie in that way (and that is how I am choosing to interpret it). 

I would also like to point out that Biana chooses to run away with Sophie to be with the Black Swan. She doesn't have to. She could stay in the Lost Cities and serve her minimal punishment, then get back to her life. But she chooses the dangerous option to BE WITH SOPHIE, which speaks a lot about these two and how their relationship has grown from mutual animosity to ride-or-die friendship. 

Page 31. "'But we're in costume!' Biana argued. 'Yeah, but you guys will stand out. I mean...look at you. You look like models.'" Sophie literally says Biana looks like a model (along with the boys of course, but she's including EVERYONE in her group) (plus she also comments in her head NUMEROUS times that Biana is gorgeous, or pretty, or looks like a princess, and I don't know about you but I don't go around thinking about how gorgeous all my friends look, I mean they're all amazing people but I don't go around thinking "oh wow [friend] looks like a fabulous princess with their on point makeup and effortless looking outfit." It's just a little bit indicative  that Sophie might like Biana as more than just a friend, hidden in the deep reaches of her oblivion at least). 

Also I would just like to point out that on page 38, when the group sees the statue of David, Keefe immediately reacts to it, and Sophie has no immediate gross out factor, she's just like yeah it's art and this dude is naked so what, which I find a bit telling but idk. 

Bonus: Biana finds the fact that the statue is naked a bit disgusting, and is terrified at the thought of running into it, which also seems a bit telling. 

Page 77. aka the page where Biana compliments Sophie's eyes and calls them "striking and unique." 

Page 167, 168, 169. THEY LITERALLY SLEEP IN THE SAME BED TOGETHER TO COMFORT EACH OTHER. BIANA WENT TO SOPHIE'S ROOM FIRST WHEN SHE COULDN'T SLEEP AND IS IN NEED OF COMFORT, EVEN THOUGH HER MOM IS literally within walking distance away. 

Page 168 "The soft sound of Biana's breathing made the room feel warmer"

Page 615 "...especially when she realized Biana was there too. She pulled her soggy hair forward to cover her face. 'It's cold here.' 'It is,' Biana agreed. Sophie couldn't tell if the strain in Biana's voice was exhaustion or something else." This is after Biana and Alvar interrupt Sophie and Keefe basically cuddling in the cold after almost dying. This could be interpreted as Biana being sad that Sophie seems to be choosing Keefe over her, and she's struggling to deal with that.

After these moments, Biana kind of fades into the background, along with Dex, until around book 8 (and even then....yes I'm a bit bitter that my girl doesn't get page time), so I'm going to skip ahead. 

Book 8: 

page 135. "...next to her daughter wearing a peacock blue gown with shimmering gold beading that was almost as stunningly beautiful as she was." Reminding you of her constant appeal to Biana's appearance, and also this is after Biana has been MAJORLY scarred, yet Sophie still finds her beautiful and oh look I'm crying now (onto the next!) 

Page 256: "'You okay?' Biana asked, plopping down beside Sophie on the grass and reaching out to brush some of the fallen pinkish, purplish, bluish petals out of Sophie's hair." this kind of thing is generally reserved for Fitz or Keefe, so I was SHOCKED when I read this. She's pulling the 'brushing the person's hair out of their face' ploy and I'm so here for it. 

Also, just Biana's reactions to Sophie dating her brother are a bit odd, as if she is only reluctantly okay with them being together. 

Unlocked (8.5): 

Biana's file: page 76. "Ultimately, though, Biana and Sophie have grown to genuinely respect and admire each other, and are now well and truly friends." This is under the heading explaining that Biana has trouble making friends because of complications with her brother,  and then goes on to mainly explain Biana's friendship with Sophie, which just...points toward the slim possibility of Sophiana. 

I'm not holding out a lot of hope, because I know it's probably not going to become reality, but I do have my reasoning and a decent amount of evidence, and I still can enjoy my ship from afar as the ship wars rage on. Because with these two gals, we could: 

1. Have the possibility of a healthy relationship where neither party is afraid to tell the other something

2. both balance each other out personality-wise

3. they've also gone through some rough spots but in all have retained a steady friendship in which Sophie isn't afraid Biana will betray her or hate her for anything (unlike SOME boys (I'm sorry, I love Keefe it’s just his decisions haven’t been all that great lately)) 

So yeah, tl;dr Biana and Sophie have the possibility of being in a great relationship built on support and trust and I put way too much effort into this

Was there anything good about Hamilton the musical? My mother brought me tickets to go to it in the Summer and I want to know if I'm going to hate all of it.

Is Hamilton bad from a musical standpoint? (Nope.)

    Oh, don’t get me wrong, Anon--when I went to see Hamilton live, I had the same thought & I THOROUGHLY enjoyed it. The set design, comedic timing, & choreography (particularly the utilization of the spinning platform) are all incredible. And the songs, of course, are mostly certifiable bops. Most of them. I would say 40 out of 45. It’s not like “Guns & Ships” or “Room Where It Happens” weren’t amazing songs on the soundtrack, but the choreography really adds to the experience, & in the case of songs like “The Reynolds Pamphlet” or “Washington on Your Side” turns it into something really funny. Don’t take your eyes off the stage for a section, honestly.

The only weak-point of the music was, to be honest, whenever Hamilton was on stage; I used to think it was just a “Lin Manuel Miranda problem” because his flow is honestly... weird. I can’t really explain it--I’m a hip-hop dancer & there’s just something wrong with it--but even the man I saw performing as Hamilton couldn’t salvage it.

I assume it’s just a product of how Lin Manuel wrote his parts in the musical, since he admits that he can’t sing (& therefore would rather not) so there’s this weird juxtaposition sometimes where his part sounds really out of place, even when all the actors in a scene are “talk-singing.” (I don’t know, chime in, does anyone else feel me on that?)

The actors are all great as well, the performances & how they work off each other & the comedic timing are all fantastic, like I said. I like a good Broadway show. As a hip hop fan as we, the use of sampling is so insane.

The songs are also partially structured using actual quotes and other things that characters were known for saying or doing, so it’s impressive, all things considered.

Is Hamilton Bad from a Historical (Absolutely)

The real annoyance with the Hamilton musical (& why I would assume I’d hate it) is that it’s based off a biography; “Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow”, specifically. It’s a compelling read, but an embarrassingly awful biography.

    It’s less of a biography on Hamilton’s life & more of a intentionally misleading fluff piece where Hamilton is painted as this heroic, selfless visionary who is wrongfully slandered, which is infuriating on its own but it’s at the expense of painting everyone else around him who slightly inconveniences or holds him accountable for his actions, as the villains.

     Some of these people ARE villains, don’t get me wrong (for example, [HERE] is a list of legitimately monstrous things Jefferson is guilty of), but none of the actual horrible things these people did ever come up, it’s all about what THEY did to Hamilton... which usually just amounts to stupid shit like... forcing “him to admit he cheated on his wife,” or “being a battered housewife begging him for help & monetary assistance,” or, (I kid you not) “his wife being too pregnant for Hamilton to have sex with, so he decided he had to cheat,” which is a legitimate argument that Chernow tries to make.

Alexander Hamilton in real life had a hairline temper & the decorum of a child; he pushed away nearly every ally in his party he had & after Washington died he essentially had no political power. None of this is brought up the play, though--or if he is, it’s brought up in a way that intentionally makes you feel bad for him. It’s gross.

The “Pro-Immigrant” Message

     LMM is the son of 1st generation immigrants, & as such decided that a “pro immigrant” message was appropriate for the play. After all, Hamilton was an immigrant, right? It’s perfect because it’s something character would believe in, right? Uh... wrong.

Hamilton was the type of immigrant to “close the door behind him,” so to speak. He worked exclusively for the bourgeois & his party (The Federalist Party) was historically anti-immigrant. 

He himself used a lot of rhetoric that is popular today among xenophobes; he didn’t like immigrants because he wanted to “preserve American culture.”  He also assumed that the French Revolution was just “meaningless rioting” with no real goal (the “Revolution”, we’re not talking about the “Reign of Terror”) and expressed no real interest in helping refugees.

(Don’t get me wrong, having a message like this obviously isn’t a bad thing, it’s just makes it tone-deaf and bizarre watching it from the perspective of someone who knows this.)

Aaron Burr was an Afterthought. 

     The most confusing thing about the play is how Burr is portrayed. On one hand, he is presented as the villain (he does shoot him, after all) whose opening lines of each song by essentially calling Hamilton a bunch of names. From Hamilton’s perspective, he sings about how Burr is an opportunist who doesn’t have any political beliefs (which is a [LIE], by the way.)

On the other hand, he his presented as a tragic character; he is given songs like “Wait For It” & “Dear Theodosia” to humanize him, he even almost got a tear-jerker of a song after his wife died & he’s singing a reprise to his daughter through his tears, which was ultimately cut for time... (I’ll leave it [HERE] because it’s legitimately beautiful.) These are two very conflicting ways to present a character, but after looking into it a bit more I realized...

      --it’s out of place because the sympathetic Burr portrayal was written as a an afterthought. 

By some crazy chance, LMM lived in the same complex as Antonio Burr, a distant descendant (I believe he’s a descendant of Burr’s cousin?) Antonio was adamant about defending Burr and correcting a lot of LMM’s misconceptions (because, as I said, the Chernow book paints Burr as cartoonishly evil.) So, Antonio convinced LMM to spend more time in the play humanizing Burr.

It was Antonio’s idea, not LMM’s.

This post is already pretty long so [HERE] is a post I made more in-depth about why Burr’s portrayal is super dishonest (for example, he was actually pro-immigration, whereas the play has him mocking Hamilton for it).

Overall

    TL;DR, Hamilton isn’t that bad... as long as you turn your brain off. I personally just pretend that the musical is about Burr instead of Hamilton (“his enemies destroyed his rep, America forgot him,” describes him pretty well.)

I’m sure that you will enjoy yourself, don’t let my complaining dissuade you! (God knows that the actors appreciate the ticket sales right now.)

I know the ask this is referencing is pretty old, but I would love to hear that giant spoilery rant about the last three Dark Tower books

Oh boy.

I guess I should start by acknowledging what I liked in the final books.

The Tragedy of Roland

I liked that Roland is never meant to reach the Dark Tower. He saves the universe, this is very necessary, and everyone tells him “Congratulations” and then immediately after “PLEASE STOP”. Roland could have stopped before the end, should have stopped before reaching the tower as by reaching it he actively places the multiverse in danger, but he cannot stop.

It is not even that he has sacrificed so much to get there (he has) but he is just this machine whose sole purpose is to reach the Dark Tower for reasons he cannot even explain to himself.

And we see the consequences of that.

His friends and companions all either die miserably or else abandon him, Susannah essentially calling him a fool. Roland reaches the Dark Tower alone, and then of course we discover he’s in a time loop because there is never a universe in which Roland does not choose to enter the Dark Tower. 

We had hints of that throughout the series, that this was Roland’s fatal flaw, and it was very poignant to see it actually delivered. (Where many authors and series forget about such things or end up chickening out.)

Other Things I Like

Actually, after “Song of Susannah”, which to me is one of the strongest if not the best novel of the series, I uh... nothing immediately comes to mind beyond Roland’s tragic fate and that of his companions.

Granted, it’s been a while since I’ve read them, so maybe there was something I’m just not thinking of but they were... pretty damn bad.

So, the major things I hate.

Stephen King, Our Lord and Prophet

It’s pretty clear early in that The Dark Tower is a multi-verse of of Stephen King novels as well as our own universe (or a universe suitably familiar). At one point Roland and the gang walk through a world which seems to be a part of “The Stand”, we see constant references to King’s other works. 

On the whole I always found that very neat and a great way to show that Roland truly is travelling to the center of the multiverse and that somehow this mysterious tower is in the center of it all.

And then the Father from “Salem’s Lot” shows up as an actual character. I feel like, when he actually started talking, I felt something inside me die as for reasons I cannot explain I knew something terrible was coming.

And that something terrible is called Stephen King writing himself in his own story as a prophet and the savior of mankind. No, seriously, he does this. Stephen King shows up as a character, Jake ends up dying to save his life, and it’s very important to save Stephen King’s life as he is a prophet of the gods/the tower and his words must be written.

I have no words. None. At all.

It’s been years, I still have none.

Mordred the Spider Baby

There’s a big theme in “The Dark Tower” that it’s a western mash up of The Roundtable and the fall of Camelot. Roland isn’t really Arthur, per se, but there is a lot of how the gunslingers are basically the knights of Camelot and a lot of that lore sneaks in.

Apparently, where there is Camelot, there must be a Mordred. Only, as Stephen King sometimes does, he gets weird and rapey about it. (Well, the story of Mordred is weird and rapey, so I guess I can’t give him too much flack but we’ll get into this!)

Anyway, technically the... conception of Mordred happened several books earlier. First we get the seriously weird scene where Roland has to have sex with a succubus. It was weird. Then we get the seriously weirder scene where Susannah is raped by an incubus. It was really weird and uncomfortable.

And then books later we find out the incubus and succubus were the same thing and Susannah is now pregnant with Roland’s child. Who, by the way, is also a mutant spider baby. And Susannah has magic legs to match her split personality, disappears to go give birth to evil Mordred who...

Falls apart before he can ever actually do anything to Roland.

No, seriously, Mordred never becomes a viable threat. He’s very intelligent and evil, but his body is such a shit show that he and Roland (to my recollection) interact maybe once or twice and Roland just shoots at the thing (because it’s gross). Then Mordred dies. The end.

He not only was extremely pointless and could have been cut losing nothing, he was also really weird, and involved not one but two rape scenes I had to sit through. God, Mordred.

Jake’s Ridiculous Death

It was very clearly set up that while Jake came back, he was going to die again. There was a lot of foreshadowing to this and a lot of emphasis on Roland having made the shitty choice of chasing after The Dark Tower rather than save Jake’s life in the first novel.

Except, to me, it seemed like King realized he’d have to recreate Jake’s sacrifice again and... Had no ideas.

Well, he had an idea, and it was that Jake’s life would be sacrificed to save our lord and prophet Stephen King in a scene that felt very contrived and unnecessary.

TL;DR

I feel like after “Song of Susannah” I kept going out of loyalty/inertia, as the rest of the series had been so damn good. Only, the series kept getting weirder and worse until, even though I like the end, I found myself staring at the last novel going, “That was it?”

oohohohoho okay thank u so much for this ask i am basicaly always willing to go a little off the rails abt my fav horror films :) this got a little long so i'm putting it under a read more!

i'll mention some of my probably less well known favs here because i think talking about movies like that is more interesting and it's always fun to find a good movie you'd never really considered before. i tend to mostly gravitate towards horror comedies and films with interesting practical effects, so that helps lead me to stuff that's not quite so mainstream

ok so first off, probably my fav horror film which i DEFINITELY recommend is behind the mask: the rise of leslie vernon (2006). it's a meta horror comedy that's two parts mockumentary and one part actual slasher - the first 2/3 of the film is a student film crew following a guy (named leslie vernon) who wants to be the next big slasher a la freddy or jason (who are real people who existed in this universe) as he shows them the tricks of the trade and how he's setting up the place where he plans to make his killing debut, and the final part of the film switches to a more typical slasher type setting as the crew's conscience sets in and they get involved to try and stop leslie. i think it's a really fun film that you can tell had a lot of love and effort put into it. it's funny and the characters are enjoyable and it includes a character played by freddy krueger himself, robert englund which is always a bonus. my one friend who's really into horror films (including some really weird obscure shit) actually hadn't heard of the film before i convinced him to watch it with me and he loved it, so it's always something i try to recommend to people - especially since you can find the whole film on youtube. they also did a comic a couple years back which i haven't been able to read but it seems pretty interesting!

another fav of mine which is kind of a guilty pleasure is slumber party massacre 2 (1987). this one isn't actually a particularly good movie per se (it had a budget of $500,000 and grossed $1.3 million) but i personally find it really enjoyable due to some good practical effects, decent characters, and just how batshit crazy it gets - the killer is literally a leather-clad rocker who kills people with a giant drill attached to the end of his guitar, and he gets a musical number. where else am i going to get that but in this film? despite the kinda sleazy sounding name it's really not that bad and i personally think it's the best out of the spm trilogy (which iirc was created as satire), all of which were written and directed by women! also just look at this dude. i am obsessed with him.

probably my second favourite horror and also likely the most well known on this list as it's absolutely a cult classic is re-animator (1985) which i've been posting about a lot recently lmao. it's a (very loose) modernised adaptation of hp lovecraft's story herbert west - reanimator and i just think it is a delightfully fun movie to watch. it's just this gay little mad scientist and his well-meaning assistant/roommate (oh my god they were roommates) dan doing fucked up little experiments with this serum herbert made to try and bring the dead back to life, except it really doesn't work as he intended it to. it's funny and quite gory and has some pretty good practical effects which is always a bonus in my book. herbert west is a little fucking asshole and at one point he vibe checks a dude with an oversized shovel and then uses it to decapitate him with blood splatters galore. warning for a brief but very distasteful scene including aforementioned severed head (which has since been reanimated) and a naked lady, in case you haven't heard of that infamous scene which was really Not Necessary.

there's also from beyond (1986) that i've been reblogging stuff from recently which is another lovecraft adaptation (from a story with the same name) made by the same people as re-animator and starring mutlitple of the same cast members as well, including the actor who played the titular herbert west playing a main character in this film too. this movie is fucking weird man, it's just strange. my fav horror youtuber (scaredy cats) called this film "a horny puppet nightmare" in the video he did on it and that's definitely an apt description. there's uhhhh a lot of things wrong with this movie and it is DEFINITELY not for everyone but i enjoy it mostly for the cast, how batshit crazy it is, and also the effects. every monster in this movie (and there's a few) is so wet and slimy looking and i am obsessed with it. one dude basically turns himself into a gooey almost penis shaped monster it's so ridiculous there is so much going on in this movie like what the actual fuck.

leaving off this post here because i think if i say anything more it'll be completely unbearable and i think i've already said too much lmao so uh

tl;dr i largely love weird and funny movies which are often low budget and of....questionable quality that aren't as well known as more mainstream movies and i def recommend behind the mask: the rise of leslie vernon, slumber party massacre 2, and re-animator in particular if you're into this kinda thing!

Agreeing with the last anon, I'm upset at Jensen for the sexualizing women part but not as CSA. What they did with Amara, with Dean holding her as a baby and then seeing her uh try to seduce Dean as a teen was more weird and gross (not that Dean was perpetuating CSA bc it wasn't consensual on his part, but just the way the authors wrote it) was gross

I think surface level and the way it was written, Jack is treated as being much older because he chose that form. And literally what the prev anon was saying about how the audience was gross about his kids (literally what the FUCK j2 stans are so fucking gross, that literally made me want to hurl) and he called them out on it. So yeah, my issue was with how he made a tasteless misogynistic joke

I know some people said he looked like he regretted it right after he said it, which is fair. Sometimes we say things and then regret it. But I wish he could have taken that back and been like "uh actually maybe not" or "that wasn't okay" instead of just brushing it away

The way I see it is similar to Riverdale. Like it is inherently problematic that this is a show about teenagers and we see them have sex so often, but because these are adults playing teenagers it's okay. And when the actors talk about it, there's little that they're able to do because they're just playing the part they don't have the control nor do I think they really think about it because they are all adults. And well one can and should argue that this is inherently a huge problem in media, that this is so normalized I don't think it's specifically the actors fault in this case

Tl;dr I think jackles fucked up with the sexualizing jack if he was a woman joke, but the age thing with Jack has more to do with problems in media as a whole and not Jensen specifically

hmm, i think if we'd gotten a canon blairnessa arc that had the same issues as the dair arc, i would feel differently, but tbh to me there's, uh, a lot more scope for redemption/making amends when it's someone you have directly wronged?

that's very oddly phrased so i'm just gonna give an example. if you've read my post series blenny fic, you would've seen that i really delve into some of the stuff blair has done to jenny that was out of line and wrong and hurtful and cruel, etc. like, they have to resolve it before they can move forward! and the thing about this confrontation during the dair arc is that it gets weird and complicated, because it's not dan's place to forgive blair for what she did to jenny, but due to the way canon plays out that's sort of how it ends up going. "it's you, it couldn't be awful" dan this woman literally drove your sister out of her hometown for something her ex boyfriend did. does that really mean nothing?

it's easier to talk about jenny because i already have that fic that i wrote to be like "voila! i would do it like this." but it's kind of like, the same thing with blairnessa. i think an arc that centres blair and vanessa could definitely lead to situations where blair needs to acknowledge her own misogynoir towards v and work on that before they could move forward - like i personally feel there would be no way to do a blairnessa arc without working through that first. vanessa is enough of a loud-spoken, honest, activisty person that i don't see her getting close to someone who doesn't share her values - vanessa would never, for instance, date bree buckley. i love dan, but he's very passive in a lot of ways when it comes to things like this. he avoids the difficult conversation!! vanessa, notably, does not.

You know, I tried to look for the actual full story and not random out of context screenshots. Can’t find it.

The accusations are about the short story being about a brother recording his sister getting sexually assaulted by aliens, liking it and accidentally uploading it to Youtube. Gross yes, very very gross.

Problem? Well...The tone is very...weird. Like, none of this is written like it’s suppose to be sexually arousing (I’ve accidentally [read: tentacles weren’t obvious on the cover and like an idiot I read it] clicked on enough tentacle hentai to know the difference). It’s incredibly immature (the guy refers to the sexual as going full on ‘Harry-Met-Sally’, he has a weird tangent about the names and gender of his friends and the last line here is literally ‘I, for one, welcome our new sex crazed overlords’ As in, an altered version of the Simpson meme). 

I’m almost certain that this is suppose to be absurdist humor like when Rick fucked a planet because this doesn’t come across as an earnest attempt at erotica or anything like it and the way it’s written is almost like a long running joke.

Unless the Tumblr user who started this shit will reveal the full story so we can read it- I don’t know what to make of this.
