As a professional in the fertility industry, I gotta say, this NEEDS to be talked about more. (I'm about to ramble in a particularly non-eloquent way, bear with me)

The vast majority of our patients are wonderful and have the best intentions. A lot of people need IVF for a lot of reasons, and most of them are very reasonable about their expectations. But a small handful, hoo boy. Some parents go into this process having already built a roadmap of how they want it to go. They want twin girls, they want a boy first and then a girl, etc. I haven't personally encountered anybody trying to play designer mix & match (yet), but I have had patients be mad that they can't pick their baby's skin tone or eye color. And these startups are SUCH a pet peeve of mine and I want them banned forever. Because they ARE scams.

IVF advances quickly and as such is kind of a regulatory wild west. There are few to no rules to curb predatory behavior from shady clinics promising things like IQ prediction. What they are likely doing is some form of polygenic risk score, which is generally treated with careful suspicion among practitioners. This is where an embryo's genome is analyzed and given a score indicating a risk of developing a certain condition based on that genetic profile. It's... of questionable use, because it does not take into account environment, lifestyle, how the kid is raised, all that jazz. Especially if you start doing risk scores for factors with unclear genetic links like autism, or dubious shit like IQ. Generally, reputable clinics do not like to do testing like this, because of the expectations it can instill in parents. Typical testing will yield chromosome number, sex, and maybe a single gene diagnosis if the parents are known carriers of a monogenic condition. Even then, you get parents who look at a euploid (46 chromosomes) embryo and say "my baby will be perfectly healthy" and then get on our case if they have any birth defects or conditions. No one can or will test for every condition. We ain't at Gattaca shit yet, and reputable IVF clinics don't want to be there.

Props to OP for speaking out on this, and push for *informed* regulation of IVF. It needs to remain accessible, but not predatory. Doctors need to be very clear about how the process works and how to set expectations for patients. And IVF needs to be talked about more in the world, so the general public understands what it can and can't do. Knowledge is power! IVF is so important for aspiring parents, most of whom aren't like the folks mentioned in the video!

(Obligatory mention to be vigilant for shitty bills. My state of GA is currently toying with a personhood at conception bill, which would be truly devastating for IVF. If you're a fellow Georgian, write your state reps and tell them to vote no on HB 441 please, I'd really like my job to keep existing 🙏)
