why is there such a big gap in teens' math knowledge man

im trying not to lose my mind as i tutor kids but still

i suffer

#they are trying to read a book in a language they dont know #sure you can go over the words and even memorize some constructions #but you dont understand what you are reading #im not complaining of them not knowing what they are learing now btw #it's just that they lack so much knowledge of BASIC CONCEPTS #like properties and stuff #it's not all the students fault #nor the teachers (in my case because i know their teacher and she's a good math teacher)#it's the way they have to teach the subject that's the problem #and what's required of them to know #and get this but now they have an hour less weekly of math :)#(and other subjects too)#because the government is really fucking up the education model #i became the very thing i swore to destroy (a math teacher)

I think when people think of mental illness and what helps, especially with things like anxiety and depression, the treatment involves pushing yourself. Pushing yourself to get out of bed, to exercise, to take a shower, to go out in public, to order your own food from the cashier, etc.

And because the mental health movement has grown so much, people think that's the default of ALL illnesses. That the only way someone will get better is if they push themselves. That practice makes perfect. That you'll become more comfortable or strong over time the more you do something.

But what people need to realize is, with physical disabilities and chronic illnesses, pushing yourself in most cases is DETRIMENTAL. Pushing yourself past your limits can lead to flare ups or further injury. That's why it's important to know your limits, how certain activities may affect your condition, and learn how to either adapt or get help to complete the activity in question.

Also, most of us are already pushing ourselves. Most of us don't have access to the help or equipment we need. Most of us live in places where we frequently encounter inaccessible obstacles. Most of us NEED to rest.

So please don't try to be our physical therapists or doctors. There are people specifically trained to help us navigate our own conditions and limitations. There are people trained to help us strengthen our body's resilience without causing flare-ups or injury. Do not tell us "it'll be good for you" or "you need the exercise" when we say something is too heavy or too far or when we say we need our mobility aid(s). Your friend with depression may need to be encouraged to get out of bed, but your friend with chronic illness definitely doesn't.

Respect our rest.

Finished the game couple of days ago and had some thoughts I needed to process a little. Like. Yes.

So anyway I actually didn't plan this and just wanted to redraw some sprites to just make sure I understand how to draw Siffrin correctly (still working on that!)

What did I learn from this? How fun it it to draw on a canvas that literally doesn't let you draw with colors without some layer cheating when necessary. Never tried it.

The beans. Sleeping beans.

Basically what happens when you want to sleep AND draw. Draw characters sleeping on your behalf.

Doesn't help, but at least it's cute.

I have no idea what was going on in my mind as I drew this. Feels like a fever dream of 'I want to sleep' at 4 am and 'Hm...' of thinking random things

i think it would be funny if people occasionally arose from the dead. like if that was a real-life one-in-a-million but well-documented Thing That Sometimes Happens, and the entire legal system around death (laws on inheritance & marriage & murder etc) had to include caveats for the unlikely-but-scientifically-possible event that the dead person in question might spontaneously self-resurrect, even years or decades after death. it would raise so many inconvenient and absurd possibilities

#imagine the legal system in that timeline #property laws and inheritance laws and bigamy laws--what happens if your spouse resurrects 10 years after they die?#think how AWKWARD that would be #what happens if you inherit from someone who comes back do you have to give the inheritance back? what if u used it to buy stuff?#does the jetski u bought with the money your grandpa left u 15 years ago in college now belong to grandpa?#or is there a statute of limitations?#if the guy you got convicted of murdering returns from the dead does your conviction get changed from murder to grievous harm?#how is the grievousness of the harm measured? in the number of years the guy spent as a corpse?#what if you spend 20 years in prison and the victim comes back to life and it turns out grievous harm would have landed you only 5ish years #do you get reimbursed for the extra 15 years u spent in prison?#what is the legal process for proving you have come back to life?#what are the minimum legal requirements for establishing a revenant's identity?#does it become regulation to make fingerprint/dental records of every single person who dies just on the off chance one of them comes back?#what happens if it's someone from like 300 years ago?#the world has changed and everyone they know is dead. is there a social services department that can help with that?#there would be a whole branch of counseling services for people who have reanimated or had a loved one reanimate #grief 2.0 counselors

i saw this tweet and found it interesting for two reasons. one is that some people base how good cartoon network would be to toh by how it treated su, and despite the fact that su’s treatment by the network was considered poor at the time, now its thought to be exceptionally good in comparison to modern shows.

two is how exactly su got impacted by a limited budget. a common criticism is how characters like connie, peridot, and lapis are left out of missions. but balancing a lot of characters is not only hard but also costly (extra animation, extra voices—it’s been revealed that the show is limited to a set number of characters per episode otherwise they’re over budget). animation mistakes are not uncommon since retakes cost extra. the entire reason the original show got cut short was due to loss of funding!

#i don’t know if pay rates differ per networks #but a.ivi and s.urrashu have said that they needed to work outside of su in order to make sufficient funds #it only makes me wonder what other ways su suffered from a lower budget #that we as the audience never got to see #in the vein of the too-little characters complaint #another part of that is that low-stakes episodes should’ve been abt the main cast instead of the townies #like last one out of beach city and too short to ride vs restaurant wars and kiki’s pizza delivery service #i definitely see that especially since that isn’t budget related #nor would it seem to be network related (even if cn had an ‘episodic episodes’ quota it could still be abt the gems #(another side note: /would/ cn even have a requirement that the show make episodes that can be watched standalone?#this is a question for the people who were around when su was airing #what episodes often got rerun?#was it the townie eps or the lore eps?#for example i heard that su once did a ‘peridot event’ where they just reran peridot episodes #which had eps that skip around in the show #did they even care about airing the story so that it made sense anyways?#id get it if the low stakes townie episodes were the ones getting rerun))#but i have such a boring view on that which is i think it’s simply because the creators like townie eps #like in interviews r.ebecca s.ugar has said she’s the type to be really invested in background characters #answers in interviews have been crafted in ways to hide what’s really going on though tbf #prime example of this is rebecca and ian saying the wedding being interrupted was meant to follow the common trope #when later in the art book they said that it was bc cn rejected the ep bc it ‘wasn’t interesting enough’#both could simultaneously be true! it’s a psychology thing though where people make up nice-sounding explanations behind what they create #in retrospect because they want it to be thought out in such a nice way they believe in it #the bigger problem is that not matter how many episodes there are of them #it can be hard for ppl to be invested in the townies the same way they are invested in the main cast #i’m sure that a million writers have made surefire advice on how to get an audience to care about characters #but off the top of my head i think it’s because 1. most don’t have strong motivations to get truly invested in #(exception is ronaldo but people find him too annoying to care about him)#okay i had more points and explanations but i hit the tag limit and idk if anyone is actually reading this so bye

College (uni??) AU catering to my own interests as it should always be hehe :)

#projecting my major on Vash because them mfs who have changed from the med field majors to that one have some tragic things to tell #and also because I think that Vash would be such a wonderful designer I don’t know why it’s a gut feeling #Nai the law major because of course he would have you seen the guy #he would be a personal injury lawyer because lore #fun fact Nai rested for a semester after the incident with Vash while Vash took two.He never told Nai he would be changing majors #so it was a big big shock for him. they fought again but yk I’ll explain more on that if anyone is interested #as to Kni and WW I thought it’d be funny if they shared a common subject that required a lot of team assignments #and they can NEVER work out together. being an absolute nightmare to the rest of their group #separately they are great to work with. even if Kni can come off as too bossy sometimes he is actually a great leader #and WW would always deliver things on time exactly as it was asked from him #but Kni and WW just never really matched. i cannot emphasize enough how much my entire academic situation is currently hinging on receiving an email from one (1) person

#quil's unholy underworld #i emailed her a couple weeks ago but like. that was summer so i wasn't surprised to have no response #but i would've expected to hear from her in the past week. since the class is a special situation. and that's what she's done in the past #and now i'm like. please. the class on the schedule starts TOMORROW #i need to know if that is correct. OR. if like the other semester. this one starts a week late #AND if it's actually t tr or if it should me m/w in the system #which THEN impacts this OTHER thing that is really crucial #if it's for sure t/tr #i need to fill out a form explaining why i still can't take this other required class #which is marking me in the system as 'failing to make academic progress'#literally one class one credit hour.#that i have been unable to take purely because of these classes #and I need to petition them to be like hey. i'm actually do a whole shit load of stuff this ONE class is an outlier #but if it's m/w. then I need to resign up for that class. and drop another one #and then i WON'T have to petition #SO PLEASE FUCKING EMAIL ME ALREADY

i really do think the desire to paint ten as unambiguously The Worst™️ when it comes to his relationship with martha is out of this desire to uncomplicate their relationship. to decouple them as friends and people who profoundly impacted each other’s lives. it’s just an easier narrative to swallow: that ten was Awful to her and then martha kicked him to the curb when she realized she was too good for him. easier, maybe, then dealing with the troubles of unrequited affection don’t have to be anyone’s fault, or that ten shut martha out in a lot of ways but let her in in others that he wouldn’t let any other companion near, or that they were still friends, they still wanted to see each other and be around each other, even though it was messy and sometimes hurt. you know?
