#andrew and neil dont second guess

i think one of the great things about andreil is that there is no second guessing, like most obviously with regards to boundaries like if andrew said no to anything sexual or physical contact then neil takes that at face value and doesnt question why andrew says no if it was something he did wrong etc he just hears andrews no and goes okay the reason is none of my business and i will abide by the no, and of course this is vice versa for if neil said no to andrew

but also i think that can be applied in a broader way, there isnt really any insecurity in andreils relationship, theres a confidence in the way they move through their relationship and through the flirting and the connection, like neil doesnt wonder if he was out of line for saying something he doesnt worry about alienating andrew he just acts and when andrew sets boundaries he stops at them

and i think thats part of their appeal really, like were all anxious in our relationships but neil and andrew arent and we can step into their lives for a moment and have that confidence

Finishing the golden raven knocked me the fuck out so my Coherent and Eloquent thoughts are gonna have to wait so enjoy this very spoilery mash up of whatever is coming to mind now before I do a proper deep dive

-I was really expecting more in terms of jerejean development, but Im not surprised that nora is waiting until the last book. I would assume there is also a bit to do with them having originally not been intended for one another... and on that front I dont remember nora ever confirming them officially just her deleting the ec and saying she isnt letting it define these three books. Which does point to jerejean endgame but ((and correct me NICELY if im wrong)) she never officially said the two of them are to get together.

-tagging off that point: something about the pacing of this book felt very similar to the pacing of tkm. There were quite a few scenes that felt very similar to tkm, the general flow was also very similar. Just instead of jerejeans relationship forming we got jean forming relationships in general

-again tagging onto that, the scene where he braided lailas hair was the scene that made me cry hardest.

-what we saw of the foxes made me so violently ill in the best way possible. The fear in jean at seeing neil laying on the court floor after a raven check AGAIN was so brutal, even through jeremys pov. I dont think we would have survived the raven/fox game through jeans eyes tbh. Jean had too much on the line. He would never admit it but he loves neil, Neil is essentially family to him. We see that in his blind and unending trust in him

-again, sue me, speaking of that. Why the fuck did neil not tell AT LEAST Andrew abt his doings in california??? Was it to avoid bringing up andrews trauma?? Bc anything else goes so violently against everything that andriel is i will not stand for it. If this fandom is good at one thing its saying to hell with canon and making up what we want to believe and I will blind myself into whatever fanon I need to if we get a reason for neils omission as anything other than misguided protection of Andrew. Bc yes, it would be misguided. Letting his bf know he put a fucking hit out on someone is smt he should have done despite the state and circumstances. Though I digress

-back to jean and the fox/raven game. He was so fucking worried abt neil and andrew that I all out refuse to believe we wont get more updates. I know that this series is jeans, and Im not saying give either of them a pov or anything, but it would be nice if we got to see the two of them have a conversation with Jean together in the next book. Maybe andrews arm slung across neils shoulders as they watch him graduate??

-im pretty sure what we are leading up to championship wise is a fox/trojan showdown. Despite what Jean said abt not knowing if the foxes can pull off a miracle two years in a row and the whole freshman fox situation, Im betting that is going to be where we end. And as far as who wins, I have no guesses. The foxes beat the ravens at full strength with nine players and a prayer. Despite how badly the last of the ravens fucked them up, I am willing to put good money that nora will plot armor their asses to championships.

-speaking of plot armor, how the fuck did andrew manage to take neils weight, even if it wasnt all of it, to help him off the field with a broken clavicle that required surgery???? Ik wymack and abby got there in a couple seconds but Andrew still managed to do it

-okay Ill, begrudgingly, put the foxes aside bc i have more thoughts

-I love jeremy, Jean, cat and lailas casual intimacy with one another. The four of them move as a singular unit half the time and it holds a special place in my heart

-I do kind of think that this next book is going to end with Jeremy forsaking his family. We are seeing the cracks in whatever resolve he had up and to this point. And to back that up, while their different in so many ways, the series is taking some hints from the structure of the original trilogy and with that I dont think its an unreasonable stretch to assume that there is going to be another "who is he going to choose" moment. And how beautiful would that be to have the choice be between soulmate and family yet again? This time tho I think we will get a clearer answer if this happens again bc it genuinely took me like two full rereads of the og trilogy to piece together that andrew actually chose neil and I know from friends that Im not alone in this.

-as far as jerejean, I do think that the progression of their relationship is going to be similar tho different from andriels. Also I use their ship names to refere to them bc im too exhausted to type out their names, sue me. Anyways, I think that as far as similarities, there is a good chance it is going to start out sexual. Jeremy doesnt have enough belief in himself to have an actual relationship and Jean still has a lot of internalized homophobia from the nest ((riko)) to sort through. If I had to make an educated guess I would say something abt Jean reclaiming his body and Jeremy slowly realizing that he is allowed to give this part of himself to someone who actually cares for him. Though as far as how I think their gonna be different from andriel... well I mean it doesnt take a genius to figure that their probably going to be a bit more openly affectionate/quite a bit less derranged. I do also assume that if we get a canonical endgame jerejean that Jeremy is going to have to cut ties with his family. They are violently homophobic and will probably not have any interest in entertaining the idea of jeremy being associated with them any further

-stepping away from their relationship bc i just remembered something. Jeremy calls his father sir, which i know is a thing a lot of military kids do but it is also obviously indicative that Jeremy has respect for this man regardless of his continued absence in his life. It might just be that he is the parent who wasnt there to be abusive towards him... or it might be that jeremys father, in some way, deserves the respect?? We know Jeremy has a complicated relationship with his family and how he sees them we see that in his "shes my mom cat" towards the end and ofc throughout the rest of the book. But Jeremy was the one who kept reaching out, and kept his fathers calls logged in a journal, and still refers to him with honorifics- i want more Jeremy lore

-back to jerejean, im willing to bet that we are going to get an "i cant pick him over my family" breakdown from Jeremy and Im guessing that it is going to be William who helps him make the decision. "If you cant tell whos side im on your not as smart as I thought" or whatever it was that he said. He wants Jeremy to be happy, he knows Jeremy is not happy in that damn house, and he has shown that he is willing to buck the rules to ensure that Jeremy can scrounge up whatever joy he can.

-I think jeans moment of panic is going to be more of an internal thing, like "am I even good enough to ask Jeremy to forsake his family for me" and despite all the logic I think it is going to be Neil who he calls. Bc Neil did that. As far as Jean knows Neil could have deadass looked at Andrew and went "me or Aaron" he wasnt there for it like we were. And I think Neil is going to be his usual criptic self but give enough reassurance that he gets an affectionate "your a vile wretch" from Jean or smt of the sort.

-wymack still considering Jean one of his kids even if he isnt a fox warms my heart. He called Jean. He let kevin send Jean to California. He was willing to do whatever Jean asked. Wymack my love

-speaking of coaches who kill me every chance they get: rhemann. Fucking hell i love that man. He had my heart before jeans breakdown but afterwards? He earned himself a nice shiny spot next to wymack. With the way Jean described the preceeding events Im assuming rhemann had to carry him out of the gold court or at the very least shoulder most of his weight to get him out bc Jean seemed fairly out of it, and rhemann definetly had to carry him into the house once they got there bc if jeans recollection is right Im pretty sure he was unconscious and if not then so heavily disassociated I dont think he would have been coherent enough.

-also small shout out to rhemann and adi, love them

-the end scene of the book has me conflicted. And this is probably going to be my last bullet point bc I am dead tired rn. While I do, obviously, understand that Jean wasnt sure what Jeremy was doing when he leaned over to kiss rex/jaberwackys head, I dont really understand what Jeans gut reaction there was. He doesnt explain in his internal monologue, he is far more worried abt making Jeremy less terrified and keeping the dog safe. But the reaction was instinctual, almost seemingly second nature. Which I dont 100% understand. Jeremy and Jean are often very close to one another, in each others orbit more than their not to quote Jean ((yes I know he said this abt andriel that isnt what I meant)) and Jean has stated repeatedly that he whole heartedly trusts Jeremy. Also the gut reaction in context doesnt necessarily make sense to me, it might be a me thing Im not discrediting that, and also traumatized people sometimes have instincts that only make sense to them if that bc their brain is in survival mode, so it might have been an attempt by nora to show that, but having it as the last scene in the book feels odd to me. The only thing I can assume is that Jean wasnt processing what was happening just saw jeremy coming at him quickly and reacted but also we see him not reacting to other similar situations often. You could argue that its bc Jean has feelings for Jeremy but we see Jean not reacting to Jeremy making fast movements, getting in his space and touching him throughout the series so far so I just dont get it. Now there could be a less meta reason for it, being that nora needed smt to trigger Jean thinking abt how the rules he has held to arent in place anymore but they are for him but maybe he could let them go but trauma. But he thinks pretty similar thoughts in other parts of the series too so I just dont understand. And it might be me, Im not saying it vouldnt be. Idk, I feel like the last scene in thebbook was an odd place to have such a vaugely explained and not previously seen trauma response from Jean towards Jeremy.

Okay thats all. Im gonna reread the series with tgr and give more well rounded and coherent thoughts some time in the next week. If you read all of this consider yourself a saint

WIP Wednesday (6/5) | Arsonist Neil / Firefighter Andrew AU (Part 179)

“Pretty,” is the first thing out of 10’s mouth when Andrew picks up. And Andrew immediately short circuits. There’s warmth spreading up his chest and to his ears and he’s acutely aware that his hands have started sweating. It takes him a second to get his voice box working.

“What?”

“The rainbow,” 10 clarifies. Andrew lets out a breath and curses the day he was born— yet again. This fucking idiot has a habit of wreaking havoc on Andrew’s system. 10 must realize his blunder because he coughs. “You look alright, too.”

“Thanks a lot.”

“You know,” 10 starts. “You should be careful what you show to strangers.”

Though he’s not visible, Andrew cocks a brow. “Really? A lecture on safety from an arsonist?”

“I’m serious. I could find your apartment based on the view out your window.” 10 says and Andrew bristles.

“Liar.”

“There’s a brick building across the street, a street sign I can partially make out, and a four-way intersection to the right. From our earlier conversations, I know you live near a gym. Need I go on?” 

Andrew swallows. “Creepy, but impressive.”

“Maybe this will be my new thing now,” 10 says with a snort. “Instead of fires, I’ll try to figure out where you live.”

“Stalker.” Andrew says. “There’s at least a dozen gyms around here. Besides… You don’t know I’m at my house right.”

“Where else would you be baking brownies?” 10 asks, rendering him silent. His lack of response only encourages 10 to continue. “Nice chair, by the way. It looked comfortable.”

“Wanna guess where I got it, oh mystical detective?”

“Not particularly. But I know without a shadow of a doubt that it didn’t come from the same company as the chair in my hotel room.” 10 sighs. “Thing’s hard as a rock and looks like it came out of a cartoon. I’m thinking about burning it later. See you there?”

“No.” Andrew says firmly.

“Oh, come on. Bring some hotdogs and marshmallows, it’ll be fun.” 10 says and Andrew can hear his smile through the phone.

“You cannot have a bonfire in a hotel room.”

Jeremy and Jean recognizing harmful the same/similar behaviour in the other but not in themself WHY IS IT ME?! Jean in literally like 'Jeremy your family is shit why are you staying' without a second of reflection makes me want to cry

i dont know if this was intentional, but Jean explicitly takes Kevins postcard from Laila with both hands, which is the polite thing to do in Japan

the guillotine drawing at the door which was of course fucked up but also very funny

Jean sometimes counting things to distract himself or pass time is again giving forever partners

there are 29 Trojans and Jean is number 29 (and also i just relized Neil being number 10 of 10 Foxes at the start of the original series) being kind of a flip of Riko having to be number 1, being last but surpassing everyone, i hope you know what i mean im struggling with words

Jeremys "we all knew" big big ouch, that whole situation and family is fucked up

i really loved the sentence "the trojans couldnt change how their opponents played, only how they performed despite the unchecked violence" you can choose to not let your circumstances define who you want to be, love it so much

Choach Rhemann coming out of nowhere to deck Zane, in my head he had a steel chair for it and hes my hero

Coach Rhemann asking Jean what he can do for him and Jean thinking that "in no universe could he ask for more than what hed already gotten" BOY YOU DESERVE THE WORLD! i love that he has so many people looking out for him now

also Jean later actually saying the words "I deserve to get better" SO HUGE! IM CRYING!!!!

also also Jean putting Wymack and Rhemann in the fathers category had my heart hurt at every following yes coach im so happy for him that he slowly is letting these people in

later he hugs Cat to comfort her because that is what she does to comfort him, he learned that from her! hes unsure about it first and than realizes how easy it is, how easy it is for him! him healing means so much to me

Browning saying "ill guess well see, wont we" to Jeans "i have nothing left that is worth this" and Jean also later thinking this would come back to haunt him later IM SO FUCKING NERVOUS I HATE THIS

Aaron being allowed to drive Andrews car, so huge

Jeremy always saying "what would i do without you" to William and him replying "let us not find out" towards the end has me thinking we will definitly find out in the next book

Jeremy "facing his stepfather empty-handed rarley turned out well" do i even want to know what this means? also what a huge piece of shit, im very exited for him getting what he deserves in the next book

also Jeremy immediatly sassing him is also giving neil, with makes me thing about forever partners again and Jeremy hopefully being Jeans new forever partner

everytime Jean calling Lailas place home without even thinking about it and it burning down, how could they do this

"the best entertainment [Jeremy] had to offer was a tangled up yo-yo and a hacky sack" love the return of the yo-yo, very funny but also very sad

why did Andritch terminated the contract of the raven who had a breakdown in class? why only his and no other before or after? am i missing something?

Sergio writting that the incident was the first time he ever saw Jean being afraid of Zane, i dont know what i think of this, but im sure its not good

Jeremys mom calling so often the week they are away is yes super controlling and not good at all, but probably very easy for Jeremy to spin as a caring think, her worrying about him etc. I mean he knows his family is fucked but he also still cares for them and wants to be a part of this family and this made me think about how he probably twists a lot of this harmful stuff to protect himself so he can still see them as a family worth wanting idk man, but it made me think because if someone told me their mom was calling a lot when shes away i would think ok thats a bit much but its probably coming from her caring and worrying

his father doesn’t notice that he’s come back to life and that his injuries are gone

(because neil may be alive and healing slowly, but he is still in a very poorly lit basement, covered in blood, staying completely still, controlling his breathing)

as soon as his father unties him to dispose of the body, neil kills him, lola, and the rest.

he runs. full to the Brim with adrenaline and sheer glee.

the rest of the gang have a dream/vision of the moment neil died (this is how some of them found each other, by having a vision of a new persons moment of resurrection)

neil doesn’t know about any of the others (due to him being new) and ran away from the scene of the crime bc he has no idea what to do. his first priority is to somehow get new clothes? he doesn’t know. it’s been less than an hour. he’s trying very hard not to freak out.

-

the foxes (and jean) are split into 3 groups!

A short andriel with a tiny bit of angst, but nothing serius. I just wanted to make Andrew cry. Happy ending assured ♡

Everything’s dark, the kind of darkness you see when closing your eyes but bright lights still shine on you from outside. There are voices coming from somewhere around him, too, but he cannot distinguish the words or who’s talking to whom.

His head feels heavy and foggy, he can’t open his eyes or move a single muscle. He’s clearly been drugged. His survival instincts are screaming, telling him he needs to find out who’s drugged him, why, and where the hell he is. But a fraction of his mind is telling him that he’s so, so tired, and with the muffled sounds in the background and his whole body feeling like nothing more than a heavy vessel, it’s easy to let himself drift off to sleep.

When he wakes up again, he doesn’t know how much he’s slept. He still feels numb and incredibly tired, but this time his eyes can open, just a tiny bit. The bright white lights blind him and everything’s blurry. He closes his eyes almost immediately.

The corridors must be crowded, because he can hear all the steps, the voices, the shouted orders. This time around, his ears seem to be working just fine.

He tries to remember. Something, anything at all. The last thing he remembers is having lunch alone in his apartment, sooner that day. Or had more than a day already passed? And then? what had happened?

The noises in the corridor seem to increase, and his ears are ringing. Someone is shouting something, but the voices aren’t close enough for him to be able to understand them.

He lies still, every movement requiring way too much effort, and waits. Someone will come eventually, right? He cannot panic. He isn’t in the condition of doing anything anyway, so he must keep his cool, as much as possible.

The voices seem to get closer. If he’s got it right, there is a man screaming something

angrily, and a woman speaking loudly trying to contain him and, why is everyone screaming?

Can’t they understand his head is exploding? Then, a third voice joins in. It’s another man, apparently. He’s talking loudly too, but calmly, and when the femenine voice disappears, the two men get apparently closer to where he is now.

That’s when he can finally distinguish their words, not anymore a disconnected noise but actual sentences.

“They won’t let me see him!” the man screaming is saying. He was wrong. He's not angry: he's distressed.

“I know. I know, but you need to calm down. If not, you’ll just make it worse.”

The other one keeps silent, apparently succeeding in calming down, but the silence lasts too little, interrupted by frantic sobs and hiccups.

He is still too numb-minded to connect what’s happening around him, but he knows for sure the man out there is utterly desperate.

“Hey. Hey, there," the other man is saying soothingly. The hysterical crying increases.

“I don’t- I dont-”

“I know. Hey. Just focus. Breath. Listen to my voice and try to follow, you get it? In, and out. Breath. Everything will be fine. He’ll be alright.”

“I can’t lose him- I- If-” The crying man is crumbling to pieces, he can tell. What’s happening?

And why is listening to these voices both soothing him and giving him painful grief?

The man sobs and his cry resonates in the corridor, now apparently empty. Neil’s heart loses a beat.

“You’ll be able to see him soon. They’re going to check on him in a few minutes and they will see he’s stable and let you in.”

“But what if-”

“Andrew. He’s going to be okay.”

Neil’s foggy world rebuilds itself and collapses. Andrew. He was going to Andrew, to pick him up at the airport. He was in his car and it was raining. That he remembers. What happend after, he can’t. Andrew. Andrew’s there, wanting to see him, yearning for their encounter. But also, Andrew is crying like he’s never before, because he hates it. Because crying is as ‘please’ is, and he doesn't allow himself to cry. Because it doesn’t relieve stress and sadness, but increase the grief instead. Andrew’s crying because he’s desperate, and every passing moment he’s feeling worse and worse.

Neil tries to open his eyes once more, but the lights are burning his orbs and his head is pounding. He tries to speak but his voice doesn’t come out and his throat is hoarse.

He’s been in an accident. He is at the hospital. He is drugged. What’s happened to him? Is he still all in one piece? Why can’t he speak or keep his eyes open, and his head is pounding oh so hard, and he's dizzy and- and what if he’s broken and cannot play exy

anymore? Will Ichirou kill him then? What will Andrew do when he’s dead then? He can’t leave him alone, and he needs to call him now, to let him know he’s okay right now but he can’t speak and-

A sound is beeping in his hospital room, loud and insistent, and Neil’s breath feels heavy as his heart runs like crazy in his chest. He can hear steps running into the room and voices speaking, but all he can register is Andrew screaming between his tears and asking what the hell is happening. Neil’s heart beats faster, and faster, and the air he’s breathing isn’t enough anymore, his head is spinning.

A woman is talking to him. A nurse, maybe. She’s telling him to focus on his breathing, the same way Wymack was telling Andrew just some time earlier. She’s talking about a panic attack, but Neil isn’t really listening. He keeps trying to speak, but no words find their way out.

He just manages a whine, and needs to try much more before a word is actually spoken.

“An..drew..” he manages to say, but the syllables are baraly recognizable. He tries again, finding out every time his voice is a little more clear, and in the end, between his frantic breaths, he’s almost screaaming it.

“Neil! Neil!”

It’s Andrew’s voice, but it’s still far, so far.

This time, the nurses don’t do much for trying and keep him out. Andrew is at his side in a matter of seconds.

A pair of hands he knows so well are cupping his face and lips he’s memorized the shape of are pressing on his. It doesn’t last much, but it’s enough for Neil’s breath to be a little more stable when they part. “I’m here. I’m here.”

Andrew leans his forehead on Neil’s and he can finally close his eyes, let the violent light out. He can feel warm teardrops rolling on his cheeks, but those aren’t his. They’re

Andrew’s.

It feels like an eternity, but his brething actually stabilize and his heart beats a bit more slowly.

“I’m fine, Andrew. This time I mean it. Don’t cry.”

Andrew is still close, oh so close to him, when Neil falls asleep.

He wakes up with a weight on his left arm. This time, opening his eyes is difficult but not as painful. Andrew is sitting next to him, his hands helding his, the head resting on Neil’s arm. He’s sleeping.

“He fell asleep about a hour ago. I think he might have collapsed had he stayed another single second awake.”

Neil turns his head. Wymack is sitting on his other side, arms crossed but shoulders tense.

“I’m not asking how you’re feeling, because I don’t feel like hearing another ‘fine’. So. I guess you might have some questions.”

Neil raises his head from the pillows just how much is enough to check on his body. There isn’t anything obvious, such as casts. “What happened?”

“You were driving. A car behind you lost control because of the rain and hit you at full speed. You are quite lucky, if you ask me.”

“And what’s wrong with me?”

“I have a list I always bring with me in case you'd ask, but I guess that’s not the right

moment. What a pity. No broken bones because apparently someone in the sky loves you. But you have a pretty serious concussion and went through surgery. You had internal hemorrhaging. It was quite a long surgery.”

Neil tries to lift the blankets, but Wymac stops him. “Don’t move too much.”

Neil obeys. After all, what’s another scar when he already has plenty? And if everything is alright, he’ll be able to play exy. He’ll be able to live. He’ll be able to be by Andrew's side.

The blankets shuffle and Andrew slowly wakes up, blond hair knotted and going in every possible direction. It takes him a few seconds to open his eyes, but when he does they widen and then his whole expression tenses up and softens immediately after.

“You’re awake.”

Neil smiles faintly. “I am.”

Andrew caresses his forehead, touching him as if he’s made of fragile crystal, and finally breathes.

“I hate you so much,” he says, and “Don’t ever do it to me anymore.”

“I won’t leave your side,” Neil says.

He’s alive. Andrew’s there. Everything’s fine.

i definitely saw that the author made neil anxious about his captaining and i agree with that to an extent. i think neil struggles a lot with understanding that others care about what he has to say and despite the push back from others, people really do listen to him because he’s good at what he does. i think a lot of that comes from a higher place tho because i think neil has a general wariness of the future and less a fear of what others think of him

well tbh I think everyone knows (because it's in the tags and the notes lol) that I wrote the first chapter at midnight, drunk, bemoaning how crap tinder was, found it a few days later like what is this?? posted it as a joke and then when people liked it wrote a second chapter, thoroughly intending it to be short dumb crack fic

then I had a few months where all I could write was two kinda similar long fics for raven cycle and aftg, very heart-pounding straight-from-my-soul anxiety fics, but once that was over I was like hey il take another crack at this crack fic, but woops I was already in heart-pounding straight-from-my-soul mood so I guess that's why likes: exy became so feelingsy!

I am hesitant to admit this, but I was never going to write the date chapter - it was planned to end on them asking each other out, that was gonna be enough. but everyone was so keen to see the date I was eventually like how would that even work oh wait this is how and had so much fun writing it :D.

BUT I MUST STRESS usually when people ask for stuff I do not give it to them because readers dont actually know what they want most of the time, TRUST ME. like "oh can they get together already" and then you make them kiss and then readers would be like "oh that is too soon" you know? like I would not have written the date if I wasnt, neil josten style, 1000% sure I could make it work and that it was actually the best ending for the story.

Drake the useless dragon appear in the supermarket they’re at, which was a dumb decision of me and it has feasible relations to the plot but eh :shrug:

Andrew and Aaron spent the day eating a bunch because they’re gonna stay in their dragon form for a sort of long time, flying, and they need whatever energy they can get.

Neil and Andrew share some truths on the basis of the thinnest thread, how did that not snap under the plot pressure I put on it
