Shadowfall Manor

What is it —

A 2D animated action/horror/gothic romance film and female-led reboot/standalone spin-off of the cult Italian animated series Huntik: Secrets & Seekers, with the two voice actresses Rebecca Soler and Karen Strassman reprising their roles as Sophie Casterwill and Zhalia Moon now as the protagonists.

PREMISE:

Best described as a cross between Guillermo Del Toro's Crimson Peak and Gil Kenan's Monster House, we follow a young 16 year old teenage girl Sophie Casterwill who is often too arrogant for her own good. Gorgeous with striking strawberry blonde hair and a highly intelligent, straight A student with an incredible knowledge of history and literature, Sophie's also a horribly obnoxious, stuck-up, spoiled, manipulative and condescending brat who takes her great pride in her family's name and lineage way too far and obviously to her head. Would it surprise you to learn that despite her high status, she doesn't have any friends?

It's this however that brings Sophie into an unbelievable scenario that will forever change her entire life when she begins having strange and otherworldly haunting nightmares and visions of a dilapidated and isolated mansion that seems to be calling to her and is wanting for her. One Saturday morning, when she opens up the mirror cabinet in her bathroom, Sophie finds to her utter shock and bewilderment that instead of her neatly organized hygiene products and toiletries, she finds an equally shocked and bewildered woman in her own bathroom staring right at her who in spur of the moment anger, grabs her by the collar and drags Sophie to the other side..... or at least tries to as she resists. But in doing so, the mirrors each crack and Sophie finds herself in the place that's been in her dreams, the titular Shadowfall Manor itself.

Here, she finds that she's in a surreal and terrifying fight for her life as Sophie and the woman, the drop dead sexy, blue hair and tinted skin 25 year old Zhalia Moon are roped together against the Manor itself bringing their deepest and darkest fears to the forefront and leading them down a path that will unlock the mystery of this mansion and its connection to the Casterwills.

NOTES/TRIVIA/DETAILS:

• While the movie will overall have a similar animation style to the series, it will however be far more fluid, dynamic and most of all expressive with a stark and contrasting use of colors.

• The actual movie will be rated a hard PG-13 as it will have an incredibly dark and intense edge to it and the added bonus of actually being legit horror and even trying to actually SCARE you.

• The main influences for the film aren't just Crimson Peak and Monster House, they're also of David Lynch, Ingmar Bergman and even Coraline (both the book and the film).

• Potential directors for it are Michael Dougherty, Robert Valley and David Yarovesky while potential writers are Jeremy Slater, the Duffer Brothers and even believe it or not, Andrew Kevin Walker.

• Lastly, the big one is that it also says it's a gothic romance. Where is the romance? It turns out that Sophie and Zhalia, despite the age difference which they are aware of, develop feelings for each other throughout them facing the odds together and in the end, they kiss and have sex.

Seven's original soundtrack is available on vinyl for $40 via Waxwork Records. Shipping in January, the score is composed by Howard Shore (The Lord of the Rings, The Silence of the Lambs, The Fly).

The 2xLP album is pressed on 150-gram "Lust & Sloth" colored vinyl. It's housed in a gatefold jacket with matte satin coating featuring a layout by Steve Reeves and an 11x11 insert.

Se7en directed by David Fincher

The Killer might not be David Fincher’s most important film, but it’s one of his most fun ones recently and certainly one of the best-crafted thrillers playing on Netflix after a limited theatrical release. The film has a highly cinematic canvas reminiscing the 70’s political thrillers like The Day of the Jackal while also referencing Hitchcock's Rear Window and De Palma’s homage to it in Body Double. But at the same time, the film subverts the genre of the cool assassin by having the hero’s internal dialogue narrate the whole film, contradicting his supposed coolness and his impassionate stance with his foolish actions driven by empathy for others. Unlike some reviewers who were appalled by the narration, thinking it took away from the coolness of the character, it’s the narration that is the key to unlocking the film’s intention, which is clearly to make a dark comedy about someone believing to be cool and unemotional, while clearly driven by his emotions as he’s trying to cover his errors. Is it ethical? Well, no. It’s based on a graphic novel about a paid killer that is concerned more about style and form. But here, Andrew Kevin Walker, the writer of Seven, along with Fincher, are trying to have their cake and eat it too by telling a revenge story that leads to unpunished victory. They succeed by transforming the hero from a cool bastard to a lucky bastard, and we’re certainly lucky to live in his brains for the two hours of this excellent film, with top-notch contributions in cinematography, editing sound design and music, as well as an excellent cast lead by the epitome of cool and fun, Michael Fassbender.
