Ashley is "very not good" and "in fact very bad". That is what the promo card tells us.
Tumblr media
The flippant attitude to cannibalism and murder, the abuse and manipulation of Andrew, and constant death threats to Julia prove that, so why do they need to say that? Isn't that enough to prove that she's a bad person? On the same promo, we are told Andrew "exists" and is a "doormat extraordinaire", which while true, is a lot more complicated than it looks. He does not just "exists", he was the one who raised Ashley thus one of her "creators", and he is not that much of (if he ever was) a doormat extraordinaire, he lets Ashley make the choices because it's what he wants, and has asserted power several times throughout the game for his and Ashley's benefit. So is what the promo says about Ashley completely true in light of that? Is the truth perhaps a lot more complicated, as it was with Andrew?
Furthermore, it's quite odd how Ashley is quick to accept being called a "tar soul" and how she implies she's a bad person too when she and Andy buried Nina's body.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And in Decay vision, if she kills Andrew, she goes on a rant about how she's glad he's dead, despite it clearly being the worst thing she has ever experienced.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While it's easy to think that she's having a mental breakdown and saying stuff out of madness, I have seen someone (can't find the post though) argue that this is Ashley's attempt to continue her self-narrative that she is a "bad person". She believes no one likes her because she's a bad person. She thinks not even Andrew likes her, and she "has to" drag him the "good person" to be her level of the "bad person" to keep him stuck with her. And when she kills her brother, her parent, her best friend, her soulmate, her everything, she immediately jumps to the justification that she is glad that he died instead of being devastated that he tried to kill her, because bad people can't feel remorse and heartbreak from having to kill someone they love, right?
And I'm inclined to agree with them. Ashley's thought process of pranking Nina is that she'll have her back as a friend after she learns her "lesson", even though she isn't happy being constantly left out or avoided by her.
Tumblr media
She didn't hate Nina then, she was afraid of being even more lonely than before if Nina takes Andrew's attention away from her. And her initial reactions to Nina's death was to go "oops", try to justify why she died, cover it up by burying her, and after she's buried, Ashley says that she can just forget about her by not thinking about her for a long time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That is not the reaction of someone "bad" reveling in their victory of an innocent person's death and trying to get away with it, that is the reaction of a kid who went through something traumatic, not want to get in trouble for it, and trying to rationalize it with something that sounds like an adult in their life (Renee?) would say. Then their brain triggers dissociative amnesia because remembering it would cause great stress and PTSD. Given how stressful Leyley's life was and still is, it makes sense that's her brain's main coping method, and Nina's death was just another instance of it shunting trauma away in an attempt to keep PTSD from happening. It is likely that amnesia made Ashley quite forgetful, as dissociative amnesia does not affect just one singular event, it also affects other memories as an overprotective measure. This also may be why she develops such a flippant attitude to their crimes: joking about them helps her not have to confront the weight of what they just did. Thus, even that attitude being a marker of her being a "bad person" is more questionable. Really, her actions that have the intent to directly harm people are what her make a bad person, but I digress.
The idea that her flippant attitude is perhaps not a good marker of her being a "bad person" is best shown in Episode 1 after they eat the neighbor. Ashley is made aware that her devil-may-care attitude is quite abnormal and worrying for Andrew, which worries her. If she talks before going to bed, she gets visibly confused and worried at Andrew saying she needs to see a professional.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When he later asks how she's so unbothered by the cannibalism, she replies she says she compartmentalizes nervously, which she then follows up afterwards with a joke to not have to dwell on it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That specific coping method of compartmentalization is the same thing Andrew's brain does in his dream in Episode 2, where it ends with him having a flashback of burying Nina.
Tumblr media
In fact, it's interesting how we never get to see adult Ashley's every day psyche. This is not the same as seeing her thoughts and perspectives in the waking world, nor is it the same as the Burial vision where it's Ashley's self-narrative of her life from childhood to adulthood and how she potentially changes it. We never get to see her dream without it being a vision, a glimpse of what her mind looks like in the present processing her experiences in the every day and the past.
This is particularly crucial because while Nina appears while Andrew's brain is doing its standard compartmentalizing of Andrew's current stresses, the only times Nina appears in Ashley's head (outside of Burial vision) were flashbacks of when she is doing this as a child. While it's framed as the moment when Andrew "proves" his devotion to her, flashbacks similar to PTSD ones can happen alongside dissociative amnesia, and they do occur in dreams. Even though Ashley has forgotten Nina's name and eyes, she is always there, haunting her dreams.
This all suggests that the plot twist of our perceptions of the characters in episode 3 is that when we finally get to play Ashley in her normal dreams or see her mental breakdown (maybe if she kills Andrew?), we find out that she feels some sort of guilt for Nina's death and perhaps their other crimes. Even though she insists to herself she doesn't feel guilt about that because she is a "bad person", it is all a lie that she manages to convince to herself and the audience. This would be very shocking as we're in her head a lot of the time, so we'd assume she can't lie to us. But she has all along, just like how Andrew has to us.

“I’m here with Barty’s?
To that, the bouncer looked Evan up and down, noticing that a short-sleeved white button-up and a pair of tan shorts were more appropriate for a vacation rather than a nightclub. Then the bouncer held the door open, and quickly sent over for a server to lead Evan past the floor of dancing girls and booming music, and into to a red booth.
In that moment, nostalgia became a song he remembered so clearly as he took in the signature blue seats that were his colour.
The colour was a staple in every bar or club in the city. It was the trademark of a big spender, a ruthless party king, and perhaps a self-glorified nepo-baby. It was also the trademark of one of Hogwarts' finest students and a mayor’s son with prestige. It was the colour of Evan’s first and true love.
It was Barty’s colour.
He admired this color as he watched the empty seats, eyes hovering over the tall order of drinks that littered the table. Barty wasn’t there, but he had been there. As he was every night, he was sure. Barty partied like a demon. Regardless of how energetic the club was. If he was holding a bottle of alcohol, any drink, he’d dance naked on the streets with only the humming of the birds as music for free.
“Would you like me to get you anything? Start a tab?” The server asked sweetly behind him. She was a pretty girl, not with that harsh attitude those girls down in the suburb bars were. Her perky breasts also added to the attraction. But Evan was disappointed to see her. There was nothing comfortable about her posture or altered voice. She was like a doll that he had no interest toying so he sent her off as he slid into the booth.
Interesting is what is was as Evan sat down and inhaled the cologne Barty wore. He didn’t know the name exactly, credit to Barty’s need for originality; mixing four different brands to make his signature scent. But all Evan knew was that it was a bit musky and dry like a desert.
He peered at the dancefloor, disco lights going haywire and loud electronic music blasting in such high volume that Evan felt from across the street. The floor was packed with white guys who placed their hands either up in the air or super low on a girl’s waist. Nothing about that looked fun, not for Evan watching them, but he knew that there was a time where all he wanted to do was be apart of that. Barty hadn’t grown out of it.
Yet it seemed so when Evan spotted him leeching out of the crowd with a tall blonde girl on his arm. She was gorgeous, Barty had a taste for the good-looking. But there was something so familiar about her; maybe it was the way she laughed and cocked her head to side; or the way her eyes wrinkled; or the way she felt like a mirror of Evan.
Clearly, she thought the same when she caught eyes with a stranger sitting in the booth she was headed for. The brunette, Barty, had not caught onto this, his lips were whispering things into her ear as they both approached the booth and Evan was shocked to say that jealousy and disappointment were the first to touch his heart.
The look on Barty’s face was priceless, it was a mix of shock and confusion and Evan waited for it. Regret. That was an expression that Barty didn’t let show for any more than a second. Luckily, the blonde woman had tapped his arm to let herself go.
“You’re here.” Barty stood across Evan on one end.
“You called.” Evan started, looking at his fingers fidget atop the table. “Didn’t know you were going to be snogging someone else. Wouldn’t have showed up.”
“I didn’t snog her.” Barty said this with a strained expression that make the suit he wore quite dreary when paired with him. He was handsome, that was certain, and Evan couldn’t dare to look him in the eyes.
Evan remained quiet for a while. She looks like me.
“Can we go outside? It’s pretty loud here,” Barty offered. They went outside to the back of the building where no one could have possibly seen them.
“How are you?” Barty said as Evan took his seconds to pace away from Barty, displeased at the small distance between them. Barty’s heart shattered and sunk.
“I’m okay. Didn’t know you cared to be honest,” Evan tucked his hands into his pocket and stared into the starless sky.
Barty sped up to stand before Evan, forcing himself into Evan’s line of sight and dropped to his knees. He felt Evan’s breath hitch and felt Evan force his from meeting his.
Evan was slightly shocked, having this man at his feet, on his knees. A spark of a very vivid memory sparked in Evan and he felt his cheeks tinge at the thought of it. He didn’t look but he enjoyed that thrill of power that sped through him.
He ran his fingers through Barty’s hair as he felt the man press his forehead into his thighs in prayer.
“I cared. Evan, I cared. I still do.” Barty begged.
“Liar.” The blond’s eyes remained on the sky.
“Please believe me. Forgive me.” Barty took Evan’s fingertips down from his hair to his cheeks.
Barty was a sweet liar. Evan knew this. Barty swore to tell the truth. He hated lies. But God, he lied like the devil.

By the way. As this has been brought to attention by my community that certain figures are wondering why Ashley made it onto my villains list. The "point" Ashley Graves has is that her parents sold her and her brother to an organ harvesting ring and she was left to starve to death. Her and Andrew are fighting to survive. Then she seeks out revenge against the parents that neglected her and then tried to profit off of her and her brother's gruesome death.
This is literally the plot of the game.

I wrote this fic about Andy's perspective on the house a while ago, and reading it back, one thing that I'd love to change about it is that I wish I hadn't been afraid to make her angrier.
Because she deserves to be angry; the very first time we see Toby propose to her, she tells him in no uncertain terms that she will not marry him. She tells him "under no circumstances", and when he asks her why not, her reason is that she has "the experience of having done it once before." This woman does not want to marry him. She tells him this the first time he asks, and the second time he asks, and the third time he asks, and the fourth time when he just tells her how to announce that she will. And instead of listening to that the first, second, third, or fourth time... he buys her a house. He remembers that this is the house she's always dreamt of, and he buys it when he can barely afford to, and tells her "it's your house, if you marry me again."
And quite frankly she deserved to be so damn angry about that.
And instead? He demands a reason why she's inevitably saying now again, and even though "I've done it before, I don't want to marry the man I divorced" should be reason enough, she gives it; harsh and honest and nothing like he wanted to hear, cause every other time when she's been nicer and easier when rejecting him, he didn't fucking listen. And instead of this leading to any kind of self-reflection or understanding that maybe it's a bad idea to buy your ex wife's dream house under the condition that she marry you after several rejections? He looks sad, and she has to apologise. Cause she's going into labor, and that's hard and terrifying enough, they're about to be parents and god knows he's not gonna change his mind on whether he fucked up or not anytime soon, so she has to smooth it over and say sorry for telling him the truth he demanded to hear.
And she's never given a damn moment to be mad about it. To be mad that he bought the house, or that he didn't listen to her for nine months, or that she is now apologising to him because he didn't like her reaction to an insane situation he put her in.
And when I was writing that fic, I was way too scared of letting her feel that anger. I even made it a point to say she wasn't angry, not anymore, cause I was scared that by saying she might be pissed off about it, I'd just sound mean too. And of course it doesn't matter; because the people who'd have gotten upset if she was angry already hate the idea that she might be remotely sympathetic in this scene and this whole plot, whether I let her be mad or not. The idea that she might be deserving of some understanding, or that anyone's feelings besides Toby's matter in that scene, is deemed outrageous as is. And I was scared to stir the pot too much, I was already scared to make fans angry with me for suggesting that maybe Toby should've taken the first no to mean no, and at least the fourth one. I was scared to look like a bitch, scared to look like I was bashing his character, scared to look like everything people ironically love to throw at Andy for that scene.
And idk, I just really want to rewrite it eventually, or write a second one, where she does feel that anger; where she lets herself have that moment of being mad about the situation she was put in. Let her be frustrated that it ended up that way, let her be frustrated that that's a huge part of how she'll remember the day the twins were born; that she can't really do anything but swallow that anger as quick as she can because if she doesn't, it'll never be his fault that she's mad, it'll be on her. She'll be the Difficult Mom, the Bitter Woman, the bitch making it so hard on him to be around her and the kids because she's mad. And she can't do that; so she can't be mad for long, she can't be mad too visibly, too loudly, to the wrong person. But by God does she deserve to be.

God Told Me To (Demon, 1976)
"You're probably too young. When I was around when Orson Welles told the people over CBS that the Martians were in New Jersey - and believe me, the show was not that convincing, not that good... and you want me to tell them that God is at 57th Street and Madison Avenue, coaching snipers?"

I think that the baby trap is going to happen in Decay. Ashley would think that is the ultimate way to keep Andrew with her and not kill her, but I wondered: what would make Andrew agree to have sex with Ashley in the first place?
I think that Andrew will agree to it because a deal he made with the demon. My friend pointed out the announcement that Burial has not been developed at all, it looks like we have all these flashbacks by the demon to convince Andrew to follow through the incest, and perhaps remind him that he made an accidental deal with the demon. Because he did not eat the demon's "vegetables" (soulless victims), he is in hot water and needs to regain the demon's favor. (unfortunately cannot find that amazing post analyzing it). Thus, in exchange for his child, he and Ashley can be safe and sound.
This may be setting up Decay to be a tragedy of them repeating the cycle of abuse and neglect. Andrew becomes like Renee, selling out his child just for the well-being of him and his partner. Ashley may be clueless throughout this because she is kept out of the loop and too absorbed in her own obsession to keep Andrew with her, much like how Mr. Graves is too deep in his depression and possible other mental issues or disabilities to really pay attention to what's going on around him. Maybe she doesn't really care about the kid's fate like Mr. Graves. Or maybe (and more likely in my opinion), the fate of their child is what drives them apart, a tragic break from that repetition of that cycle that leads into both of them killing each other.

Jonny and Lyfrassir Edda are the same person.
When i first came up with this, it was based largely on a lack of understanding of mechs canon, bit its still fun to poke at
hope you don't mind if I take this concept and run with it:
Jonny gets some cosmetic surgeries and grows out his hair (and wears shoes with lifts every fucking day for years) for the sole purpose of getting the closest to a primary source as he can for their next album.
Then the Mechs arrive and Don't Fucking Recognize Him. Marius gets a big cutesy crush on "Lyfrassir," which Jonny QUICKLY realizes and tries to do everything in his power to discourage, but marius is a STUBBORN motherfucker.
jonny doesn't get technology, so he has to go see the Mechs in prison, which is always a risk of getting found out. And then his body gets hijacked by an eldritch being.
The Mechs, who thought Jonny was hanging out on Aurora the whole time, take off without him, leafing him to try to get out of the Yggdrasil system alone. They find him a few decades later after he's died a few times and looks back to normal, where he chews them out for leaving him, accidentally slipping that he was Lyf.
Jonny and Marius are very awkward around each other for the next few centuries.
