Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake Review

As Simon struggles to adapt to being freed from the Ice King, Fionna notices something strange about her world. Spoilers below

This was fantastic. Really knocked it out of the park with this one. I always had a fondness for Fionna and Cake and the Ice King's fanfic angle. I was disappointed that the last we saw of the Fionna and Cake world was a tv show and Fionna was just a fan girl and Fionna and Cake was beamed directly into Ice King’s brain back in 2017. In true Adventure Time fashion, we get a follow up six years later. So it turns out, Ice King didn’t create Fionna and Cake. Primso did. Sometimes, he just wants to make stuff for himself, as a treat.

Fionna’s Ooo becoming a normal city after Simon becoming human again was a nice twist. Trying to figure out who was who was a little tricky. Alternate versions of alternate versions. Fionna and Cake also saw a shift into full on adult humor, including Fionna taking off her pants. Frankly Adventure Time was always sneaking in adult jokes, so it wasn’t too different.

The Winter King was a fun role refusal between Princess Bubblegum and Ice King, kudos to Hynden Walch for having fun with the Candy Queen. And the Winter King wasn’t Simon cured, but Ice King who stripped his madness onto someone else. And Winter King making a fake ice Marcy, but that Marcy still has the real base. There’s lots to read into that. The Star had a nice parallel between toxic yuri Marceline and Bubblegum killing each other in battle while in Fionna’s world, Gary saves Marshall Lee from a toxic environment. (It was very nice while Fionna was hopping around, there was a b-plot in her home world to show the audience what was at stake.)

And we finally see SImon confront Betty. I love that the only way that Betty can really communicate with Simon is with dreamlike flashbacks. Back in the Temple of Mars, we learn that Betty’s relationship was all give but now take. I was too big on this for two reasons, A) it was for the purpose of telling Betty is wrong for trying to cure Simon and B) it was a little too late in Betty’s arc to explore it all that much. But here we do get a chance to explore that angle. And their relationship wasn’t toxic or a lie. SImon and Betty still loved each other very much. But it was a thing hanging over them, one that led to the relationship's end. Of course we just saw what would happen to the world if SImon didn’t get the crown, so who knows.

I do love that the way to save Fionna’s universe was to make a wish on a dandelion. After, that’s how Prismo makes the universes, with wishes. And it was nicely set up back in the first episode with Huntress Wizard counterpart explaining weeds are just plants someplace someone doesn’t want, nicely foreshadowing the conflict of Fionna’s universe. I do like Fionna’s arc of realizing that fun adventures have consequences and to learn to respect Simon as a person.

I am amazed that Adventure Time keeps coming back, but hits it out of the park with each return. 4/4.

Oh, nice! That's one of my favorite moments in all of Discworld, and I've brought it up before when discussing Paradox Space.

I'm pretty sure I was thinking about it when I came up with Responsive Timeline in the first place. Having someone reference it in an ask is a fun way to bring things full-circle.

I can grumble about 'canon' and 'meta shenanigans' until I'm blue in the face - but at the end of the day, the story will go in the direction that Hussie wants it to go. No ifs, ands or buts.

He makes it pretty clear that (assuming it's real) it's a self-imposed challenge – he's handicapping his own manipulation just for fun, and he's still massively confident that what he's doing will work out exactly how he wants it to anyway. Normally such hubris would be a surefire sign of a character's imminent downfall, but because he's near-omniscient, we the readers know that his confidence isn't unfounded. We know he has very solid reasons to believe his main designs cannot not succeed, even with dark pockets here and there. I just think it does a fantastic job at selling the idea that his designs are inevitability itself, his guidance hopeless to struggle against, his words the rails on the one way track of the alpha timeline.

Hm. I do like that, I have to say.

It's fun picking away at Scratch's chatlogs, trying to find statements that are technically 'false' - but the fact that he presents himself as truthful and yet succeeds in his manipulations anyway is very strong characterization. And it's that much stronger if Hussie's intention was that Scratch really, truly never lies.

Announcing my semi-retirement

This is a post I have been putting of writing for quite some time, and I make it with heavy heart... But first, tl;dr!

Most importantly, Don't Panic!

No, I'm not going anywhere.

I am also not deleting anything.

I simply don't want to give you false expectations about my activity here. I will keep writing, just at my (very) own pace.

Right, do we all have towels, and some refreshments of your choice?

Cool, let's dive right in - it will be over soon.

(oh and usual minor content warning regarding health stuff applies)

...what have I just said? I am not going anywhere! ...or at least not by my choice.

Yeah, in the past 10 months I have disappeared without a trace to the point that some of you thought I have snuffed it. 2.5 months, two weeks here or there, month and then another month out of nowhere...

The sad truth is that my illness, multiple sclerosis, is spreading, plus I have some other health issues that do need looking at occasionally. In fact, I might be going to some new clinic in September/October, but that's TBA.

As a result, I have become steadily more and more unreliable when it comes to delivering prompts, or even basic asks - and I cannot let that stay. Not to mention the length and quality of my works got hit by that - some of you have noticed that and pointed out/asked me about it in the most delicate way - and I thank you deeply for that.

And I can already hear you...err...type: "We don't care! Take your time!" Guys, I have taken so much time that the Time Lords will soon be on my ass asking for it back with interest.

I... simply don't want to give you guys false hope and expectations.

I believe I heard it in Hank Green's cancer vlog that once such illness hits you, it "becomes your job". So think of it like that. Me having a really taxing job, often requiring my presence at inconvenient times.

Or maybe think of me going on holidays! To... hospitals...

So that is it, from now, I free myself from the shackles and obligations of prompts and writing weeks... though of course I have been falling out of rhythm for a loooong time, so... I think it is fair to say you are already used to it...

I will keep writing and publishing stuff... very occasionally, though. And I may one day just decide I am feeling strong enough for some quick round of prompts. In fact I will be updating some prompt hubs with old tumblr asks, so keep an eye on that.

Aaand of course I am not leaving you alone!

I can wholeheartedly recommend @fereality-indy, @animation-recaps-by-sean, @noblechaton, @billythsquid, @noblesnook, @thatguywiththefaceog and so many more writers here and on Ao3 - feel free to browse my bookmarks there!

Anyway, that is it. Honestly, not much is going to change. I have been barely writing, and I will continue to do so - it's just I now have medical papers as an excuse.

[Mamaaa! Didn't Mean to Make You Cryyy!]

I guess if any episodes had to be the best episodes, it's appropriate that they be the end of the season, but god dammit, why wasn't every episode this good???

The animation, the music, the emotional weight, this episode was a real all-rounder. Even with how comparatively little action there was, it was great!

I actually feel like there's nothing for me to say, it was so good. There weren't any big reinterpretations of the source material for me to latch onto, mostly just little details like the pages crumpling under Sean's feet to convey his presence or a subtle Easter egg when Rip cut off Anno Un's arm. The coolest detail was definitely that Akira couldn't narrate the preview anymore now that we know who he is, but I get the feeling I wouldn't have noticed that if other people hadn't pointed it out first

If we're lucky, maybe that'll mean there's no recap next week...

Something this episode did help me realize, though, was that Yuki Yase's style really lends itself well to dramatic weight rather than pulse-pounding action. As we saw, the latter is still possible, but I think the thing that killed the pacing for the season as a whole was the insistence on pregnant pauses and atmospheric shots over a consistent flow of events and ideas. The dark lighting and zoomed-out shots are both pretty indicative of this, and were definitely my least favorite elements of the season. Those moments that reduced visual clarity to presumably focus on what was being said were, ironically, very distracting for me, as I always found myself trying to figure out where the cast was (though I think they were usually hiding behind Hulu's garishly huge subtitles) instead of focusing on what was being said

As near as I remember, though, this episode didn't really have moments like that, and if it did, they went by quick enough that I didn't really notice them. I remember this episode being very bright with the exception of the brief moment of sepia with Akira sitting next to his grieving mother, which was extremely poignant without the directorial style I was complaining about. If I had to guess, aside from the amazing moments of sakuga, this was the biggest reason this episode left such a good impression

I'm not really good at understanding this sort of thing, but I hope to learn at some point who was in charge of what in each episode; Yuki Yase is the director of the series as a whole, not individual episodes, so it's possible that he's not responsible for most of my gripes this past half year, but it's also possible that his overall style overshadowed everyone else's decisions, so he may well be responsible either way. I hope that someone like Totally Not Mark will cover UU down the road so I can get insight on this from someone who's good at hunting down that kind of information and comparing one bit of an artist's works to the rest. I may not like researching that kind of thing, but I do love hearing about it!

With that, we have one final episode to go. Will it be up to snuff with the last two episodes, will it miss the landing, or will it go above and beyond and convince a million people to sit through 20 episodes of recaps just to see how it gets to this point? We'll find out next week, and I can't wait!

watched 1/5/25 3.5/5 STARS ! everytime sam sings it sucks so bad im sorry 😭 hazel is super cute though. the human animation looks weird to me sometimes, but at the same time it’s pretty cute AND THE CAT ANIMATIONS ARE SO ADORABLE :((( i love bob’s behavior so much he’s so silliness :3 got a huge attitude for a little guy the pig animations remind me a LOT of sing and i cant tell if i love or hate it. the concept overall is pretty interesting, the way they incorporated bad luck was kind of cool - the plot twist with bob was very intriguing to me, i love the idea of the “good luck” character helping the entire time having no good luck at all.

rewatched in december - reviewed on 1/8/24 5/5 STARS ! one of my favorites from the batch, i ADORE the way they do the audio in this movie especially the scene when katniss gets into the cornucopia AUAGGGHHH <333 the tracker jacker scene is also super interesting to me but the part where her mom is talking but it’s peeta’s voice makes me giggle a lot

JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND

rewatched 1/9/25 5/5 STARS ! the movie is so stupidly endearing. sean gives me heavy second-hand embarrassment sometimes but the motorcycle scene is so sick 🙏 the way they portrayed the island was so pretty and in my opinion the animal animations were pretty good. gabato is so stupid i love him. i liked watching the bond between sean and hank develop, aswell as hank and gabato (theyre so dumb i love them) also the beef between hank and alexander makes me giggle so bad. if i had a penny for how many times dwayne “the rock” johnson jiggled his boobs and saved an island through a storm i’d have two pennies. why does he keep doing this.

watched 1/9/25 5/5 STARS ! this movie is so interesting wtf. i think this is the first time ive seen the main character in a horror movie be ACTUALLY realistic. also i love rod so much…. he’s so silly the scene where rod’s on the phone with rose - her actor was SO good at sounding emotional without looking it. i genuinely dont know what else to say about this movie aside from just. wow.

watched 1/11/25 4.5/5 STARS ! in the horror aspect, not the best. it was more bloody than scary, however it was still a very good movie. i loved gemma’s character (even if it wasnt actually her), she ate so hard. i liked joshua a lot aswell. i honestly really liked the way they made skye handle the “infection”(?), because yes it wasnt productive in the sense of solving the problem but it felt more realistic. i honestly ADORED the ending. i love when horror movies end with a death instead of solving the issues or being a “tune in next time”. also the monster? AUAAGGHH it looked kind of stupid but the CONCEPT WAS SO COOL!!!!!!!!!!

watched 1/11/25 3.5/5 STARS ! at the beginning i wasnt a huge fan (the scene where the guy’s dick got ripped off made me giggle so bad im sorry) but like as the movie went on i ended up getting super invested… i honestly wish more movies were filmed like this because it’s super cool to me… sometimes lesser quality just makes things look cooler. at first i wasnt a fan because there was so much going on back to back but like i ended up really preferring that. like you basically knew (almost) everyone was going to die but it was still interesting. i dunno i guess this movie just kinda grew on me throughout watching it :3

watched 1/20/25 4/5 STARS ! i loved the animation (or cgi?? i dunno the proper term for this) they did for this movie! i wish keith david got more screen time i love him </33 also every-time beyonce spoke i giggled because i keep forgetting she’s an actor,, other than that this movie was pretty good ^_^ i dont have much to say about it but i wasnt a huge fan of the songs - though the “bye bye” one was fun :3 i like that they incorporated taka’s scar by him saving mufasa one last time!!

Quick recap.

David Zaslav should not be running a movie studio. Yet another film has been locked away, one that was near-completed that you'll likely never see, because "tax write-off". First BATGIRL, then SCOOB! HOLIDAY HAUNT, now COYOTE VS. ACME... And even crazier, that production - which tested extremely well - involved James Gunn, one of the architects of Warner's new DC movie universe... Zaslav likely pissed Gunn off, big time... What kind of ineptitude is that?

He could've offloaded it to another distributor, like how the Looney Tunes movie THE DAY THE EARTH BLEW UP and the series BATMAN: CAPED CRUSADER were. But no, a $30m tax write-off. Because fuck everybody who worked hard making these movie, and fuck everybody who will be its audience - me included. Yachts do weird things to your brain. This is why there were strikes, and whatever happens with the Animation Guild next year, I hope that end of things gets to go HAM next year, because this is all kinds of bullshit. No movie should be locked in a vault because some dingus who doesn't like movies can't be bothered to actually do his job.

Lighter note...

The INSIDE OUT 2 teaser. At last. Funny how it came about right after the actor's strike ended. And even more egregious that while Disgust and Fear are still in the movie, their actors Mindy Kaling and Bill Hader didn't come back because the pay was below that of Amy Poehler's. Tony Hale - previously TOY STORY's jumpy Forky - takes over for Fear, Liza Lapira of many TV roles is now Disgust. New characters! I hate my anxiety, but I like this movie's Anxiety. The design, just. WOW! A scrunkly bunko chewed up Fraggle Rock reject, I dig. Funny how three of the four teased new emotions begin with "E", and the fourth with an "A". All vowels.

Voice work resumes on SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE. Please, no crunch this time. Lock the picture before frames are animated, no last minute changes up until the week before release.

The Netflix-exclusive DreamWorks feature ORION AND THE DARK, from director Sean Charmatz, has a release date, February 2nd... And a trailer... It has a very fun, subtly sketchy look, with characters looking like they were cast from notebook scribbles. Looks to be a fun kid-centric spooky time, like something the ill-fated Disney/Guillermo del Toro animation partnership "Disney Double Dare You" could've made.

The other big Netflix animated movie of 2024 doesn't have a concrete date, but its new trailer is quite striking. Shannon Tindle's ULTRAMAN RISING looks to work off of a SPIDER-VERSE-esque playbook with its textures and modeling (worth noting that Tindle was supposed to direct a superhero movie for Sony Animation up until the plug got pulled in July 2018, just a few months before SPIDER-VERSE 1 came out), but totally doing its own thing, with - as expected - all the anime influences. Another worthy experiment in CG animation pushing the medium in different directions once more.

Now that the strike is over, more delays are likely to come... Disney delayed a *ton* today on the Marvel and CG tech demo end... Their LION KING remake prequel leaves July 5, 2024 (where it was to open opposite of DESPICABLE ME 4) for December 20, 2024 (where it will go head to head with SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3)...

Marvel saw the biggest shakeup.

DEADPOOL 3 is now the sole MCU movie of next year, set for July 26, 2024.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD now opens 2/14/2025, followed by FANTASTIC FOUR on 5/2/2025, then former 2024 movie THUNDERBOLTS hits 7/25/2025, and the year ends with BLADE, 11/7/2025.

I get that two of these movies are former 2024 titles, but goddamn 2025 still has *four* MCU movies. They should really just do 1-2 solid movies that they took their time on every calendar year. For me, if the bar is GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 and BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER, the MCU would be in good standing every year...

They also still plan to release four movies, including AVENGERS: THE KANG DYNASTY, in 2026... Nah, this train I feel has to slow down a bit. You also have all those Disney+ shows as well, it's a bit overwhelming a feel.

So now Disney's 2024 slate, following the delaying of ELIO and all these Marvel movies, is down to... KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (the first of their new movies, opening in late May), INSIDE OUT 2 (June), DEADPOOL 3 (July), a new ALIEN film (August), an untitled Disney live-action film (September), 20th Century title THE AMATEUR (November), an untitled WDAS film (November), and MUFASA: THE LION KING (December).

Two recently delayed Searchlight movies, THE BIKERIDERS and MAGAZINE DREAMS, can feasibly take some early 2024 slots. They may miss the Oscars, but I'd rather see them sooner than later. I don't know if they can reclaim their December slots with the actors now available to promote them (MAGAZINE DREAMS is tricky because its lead is Jonathan Majors), or if Disney/Searchlight would rather just focus primarily on POOR THINGS.

Untitled Disney September 2024 could just be a placeholder for another 20th Century or Searchlight film, and I doubt they move SNOW WHITE forward from March 2025 to that date. Otherwise, I can't think of any other movie in the tank that could make that date. At least one I've heard of or know that was in production before the strike.

I'm just hoping, since WISH is right around the corner, that we hear what WDAS 2024 is going to be. Who's directing, what it's about, the title, etc. From the trenches, I hear it's a fantasy film set in the Middle East, possibly directed by Suzi Yoonessi, who is of Iranian descent. Maybe, maybe not. I'd love to know soon, though. But whenever they're ready, they're ready. No rushing, now.

I expect a lot more scheduling developments to take place over the next month or so, now that the dust has settled...

awesome in that case I can say I adored Rebirth a whole lot and have spent a good amount of time thinking about it in the months since I beat it while genuinely considering it my GOTY (unless I'm hit with heavy water and speed thru Metaphor lol) as well as one of the best games ever made. like it's a perfect example of a video game if that makes sense

don't have the energy to like rant or anything but while I get why some people don't I love the game's story and how obfuscated everything gets in the third act or so and came away extremely excited for the third part

It’s both the general “birdiness” as well as the swooping - mostly, though, it’s the talons and the beaks. 

Penguins, though, don’t bother me much at all. I’d probably be a little apprehensive about approaching or being around a penguin, but I’d be much more willing to hang with a penguin than I would, say, a pigeon. They’re way cuter, plus they can’t fly at me, and if they try to peck my eyes out I think I could dropkick one pretty easily. 

I’m pretty sure this is referring to the watermelons from SWI, in which Steven kind of literally is their god; he’s basically their divine creator, right?

I did see the comic (or video?) sometime shortly after watching the episode...and also, I’m actually doing a playthrough of Undertale right now! I’ll link the playlist below so you can watch it, if you like - warning, though: I’m not great at commentary, banter, or comedy. There’s also some audio mixing issues in the first few episodes; it gets addressed later on. I’m also kind of terrible at the game apparently. I can’t say that for certain - I’ve never been able to stick to a consistent schedule, unfortunately. I’m trying out the every Friday thing, but that doesn’t even necessarily guarantee a full episode every week - it’s what I’m aiming for, but it’s not a guarantee. The liveblog has to take a back seat to more pressing things, namely work and school. 

I won’t lie and tell you a Patreon would guarantee anything, but it would DEFINITELY be more incentive to stay as consistent as possible.

Faded Blue AU idea where Faded Blue is created via time travel from the main canon. Someone from Canon timeline accidentally or purposely travels back in time and gets Greg to fire Marty before beach city show is booked again either accidentally or purposely. And when they returns to the present they find the faded blue universe.

Oh stars. Not gonna lie-- we love this. 

We imagined two alternate scenarios with different scenarios:

- One has Connie, who’s dealing with the fact her best friend has been replaced with another version of him who’s pretty similar but also a distinctly different person. Can she fix it? Should she fix it? And how does her now weirdly close friendship with Amethyst feel? 

- Amethyst and Pearl being the ones to mess up. Horrified they technically erased ‘their’ Steven from existence. Steven kinda creepy out by how differently they’re acting around him now. Pearl and Ame wondering if they should be happy at least Blue Diamond is gone? And of course, now Rose Quartz is there...

Maybe one day we’ll write something with this :)

Speculation for the contents of the remaining Undead Unluck episodes under the cut, spoilers for anime-onlys

Episode 21 got through chapter 42

If we were getting 26 episodes, we'd be on track to finishing Autumn at a pace of 2 chapters an episode, ending at chapter 52 in episode 26

However, all sources I can find are saying we're getting 24 episodes

To keep pace now, it should look something like this:

Ep.22 - Ch.43-45 (the entirety of the Victor fight)

Ep.23 - Ch.46 (closing the book), Ch.47&48 (Anno Un's backstory)

Ep.24 - Ch.49 (spat with Under), Ch.50&51 (Autumn Phase 1), Ch.52 (Autumn Phase 2)

Whether ch.46 is in 22 or 23 is debatable, but I think that the Victor fight needs to have as much time to itself as possible

Ep.23 will probably end with Andy killing Sean, cus that's a great episode ender, and having three relatively action-light chapters in one episode should be perfectly doable

Ep.24 cramming four chapters into itself has a lot of potential to feel rushed, BUT if there's A) no recaps, and B) no opening/ending theme aside from being played over the battle/the farewell to Anno Un, I think it should be doable

We're really coming down to the wire, so I hope that all of the senseless padding we've seen up to this point turns out to be in service of these final episodes rather than just poor planning

The Owl House-Watching and Dreaming Recap

Thanks For Watching Spoilers below.

Well here we are. It sucks that The Owl House was cut short. It is possible that Disney Branded Television just wanted to focus on comic musicals, but the fact it was the Gay show that hit the worst will always be an asterisk next to this show. When I started this blog, we were in a golden age of animation. Adventure Time had ushered in so much serialized storytelling that I built these blog around. Today Netflix and Warner Bros are burning down their feet to save a few bucks. It’s not a good time to be an animation fan. I don’t think this will last, these dark ages never do, but it’s gonna be a rough few years. It is an end of an Era. It was beautiful.

While the first two episodes dealt with the condensed plot very well, this one struggles a bit. The dreaming we get from the trailers last barely five minutes before we move onto Steven Universing the Collector. This goes way too fast. I wasn’t a big fan of the collector as it was, and this rushed timing wasn’t helping. Don’t get me wrong, I get WHY it’s rushed. I don’t know why I don’t gel with the Collector’s arc. I liked similar stuff from other shows. I guess they were presented very differently in their first appearance. I do think sending them away to find themselves works though.

The good news, the rest is fantastic. Belos merges with the Titan’s heart, and Luz get’s King’s Dad, who is voiced by Arin Hanson which I did not expect. And he has a Hooty cause of course he does. Where else would Hootys come from?

He gives Luz gets a cool Titan transformation. The final Belos battle is fantastic and he melting as he fails to manipulate Luz and Eda, King, and Raine JoJo stomp him. Also, amazing ‘eat this sucker’ call back. Belos was a fanatic villain, cruel and interesting in all the right ways. Charismatic enough to get his deal, but not to sympathize with. Real love to hate. A new england witch hunter vs the witch loving teen. It was such a great thematic contrast. A perfect foil to Luz.

The poor Hex Squad don’t get much to do. They try to catch the people turned puppets during the final battle, but it’s not much.

The fake out where they looked like they were gonna Amphibia it, but nope. Luz is going to college in the Boiling Isles and she’s been in contact with everyone the whole time. Everyone’s future designs were fantastic!

The Bat Queen favor thing never came back, but with the shortened season that would be something to put in the backpocket for a revival.

Maybe the show will come back. Executives and trends are all ways moving behind the scenes. Stranger things have happened.

I love the Owl House. The witch aesthetic really does it for me. And the story hit me in ways I haven't been hit since Gravity Falls. Even the compromised ending was great, if a bit shaky. In an age of giants, it was a Titan.
