Coming up with "shows to know me" was more challenging that I thought? In the end I chose shows I have often rewatched and that never fail to cheer me up. In no particular order:

Remington Steele

This show is a delight and a half. For years growing up it was on channel 3 in France every summer, and every rewatch makes me feel like the happiest teenager. Expect RayBans and vintage cars, because this is 80s LA with an Old Hollywood, Spencer Tracy/Katharine Hepburn inspiration. Unfortunately it's become impossible to find in Europe/France, and my entire family laments this fact on a monthly basis.

The Newsroom

If you get one thing out of this post, it’s to give The Newsroom a try. Not everyone loves Sorkin, in fact several of my friends hate this show, but I LOVE it. It’s chaotic. It’s fast. It’s idealistic. Everyone is a genius at their job and an idiot in their personal life. And the cast! Emily Mortimer, Jeff Daniels and Sam Waterston are superb! Olivia Munn and Thomas Sadoski are spectacular! Dev Patel and David Harbour are delightful! And the supporting cast - Jane Fonda! Chris Messina! Terry Crews! BJ Novak! Only this show would make me use so many adjectives and exclamation marks.

Hart of Dixie

This is my guilty pleasure, “won’t tell people about it because they’ll think I’m a basic bitch" show. It’s super cozy, the clothes are great, the dudes are hot, there’s a pet alligator called Burt Reynolds, the folksy-country soundtrack is fun, everyone is nice and walks around the WBros PLL and Gilmore Girls lot fake southern town with a pastry and home-baked pie in hand, and nothing really bad ever happens. Truly the happiest of basic bitch shows.

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel

I ignored Mrs Maisel for years because I’m not a big stand up or 50s style person, but it turned out to be one of the shows that’s made me laugh the most in the history of shows. It’s funny, it’s warm and it does more for Jewish humour than most pieces of media (The Nanny is the exception) since Annie Hall’s Easter lunch scene. I didn’t care much for s4 (style really took over content for me) and s5 is.. well I just don’t know how they explain a lot of those choices there. But man, s1-2 is something I would (and will) happily rewatch on a regular basis.

Friends It’s not original, it's "90s diverse" but sue me. I’m old enough to have watched it with my siblings when it first came out (VHS, baby!) and it’ll never not feel cozy and fun. I won’t catch it on tv because ad breaks will reduce it to unfunny, memeable catchphrases, but every few years I’ll pop a couple of seasons in the dvd player (DVDs, baby!) and it’ll still make me laugh like it’s my first time watching it.

Arrested Development

Do I need to explain? Yes s4 was half good/half bad when it was released (and somehow made mostly bad when it was re-edited) and I pretend s5 doesn’t exist. But seasons 1-3 are the definition of perfect tv! And in case you didn’t know, Jason Bateman and Will Arnett host a podcast (along with Sean Hayes of Will and Grace) called Smartless; the episode with Tony Hale (Buster) as the guest had me in literal tears.

Chuck

There’s a scene where Chuck’s best friend Morgan says that he’s spent years devising a work system that allows him to do as little as possible at his job, and he’s not about to ruin that by accepting a promotion. My entire family quotes this on a regular basis. I have watched s1-3 at least half a dozen times and just typing that makes me want to watch it again. Love the music, the ridiculous spy adventures and the unhinged background characters. Also Chuck looks exactly like one of my high school best friends which makes it even funnier.

LOOK. I did not expect this show to take over my life the way it did, and tbh I don’t really have an 8th show that hits both “will rewatch this many times” and “makes me feel warm and happy”. So I went for the one that currently has 12 drafts sitting in my fic folder. It’s violent and ridiculous and is equally funny (see ridiculous) and angsty. It got me through the 2nd lockdown, on the edge of my seat while live texting all nearly ten seasons of it to friends. But watch s1-4 and tell me you’re normal about Tony x Michelle. I dare you.

Review: The Pumpkin Spice Cafe by Laurie Gilmore

I am a huge fan of autumn, pumpkins, cosiness and Gilmore Girls, so of course I was going to pick up this book. I have no idea if Laurie Gilmore is the author's real name but has there ever been a more fitting name for the author of a book like this?

Jeanie has just inherited her aunt's cafe in the sleepy town of Dream Harbor and she is ready for a new start. She didn't bank on meeting a handsome farmer named Logan straightaway but she's prepared to roll with it, as she navigates her new life of book club gossip, local events and of course, pumpkin spice lattes. But it seems that someone may not be happy that she's in town.

Jeanie has a touch of Lorelai Gilmore about her and the humour is similar to the show. Mistaking him for an intruder in the middle of the night seems like the kind of meet-cute that Lorelai would have with a guy, so it's clear where the author's influences are. I'm not sure it's quite as polished and addictive as Gilmore Girls but the vibes are certainly there.

Dream Harbor is a quintessential New England small town and of course, I had a map of Stars Hollow in my head throughout my time with this book. I wonder if it perhaps wasn't quite fair that I am currently in the midst of a Gilmore Girls rewatch and therefore, because it is so fresh in my mind, I couldn't not make the comparisons. To reiterate, Dream Harbor and Stars Hollow are not the same place. They're just really really similar!

Jeanie walks into a community of people who have grown up together and who know all of each other's business. She is immediately bombarded with information about everyone's relationships and romantic interests and she does her best to fit in. I'm not sure that the lack of difficulty she had with this is entirely realistic (despite all the characters being very welcoming) but it fitted the cosy, romantic feel of the whole story.

Logan is definitely inspired by Luke Danes but for me, he's actually hotter. I don't know if I'd have necessarily shipped him with Jeanie, had he had other options. Logan does have close, sibling-like friendships with both Hazel, the bookshop owner and Annie, the baker. His romantic options are limited and I think I'd have really appreciated a love rival for Jeanie. It would have solidified their romance and given me more evidence that they were each other's best option.

Logan's farm animals are all named after pop stars and I just found this hysterical. Of course, the alpaca is Harry Styles because with all that fluffy curly hair and cute face, you can see the resemblance, right? This tiny touch was genius!

The Pumpkin Spice Cafe is a cute, cosy, autumn romance. I have seen it being marketed as a cosy mystery, which it isn't really. There is a very low-key mystery running through it but there's absolutely no threat or high stakes going on here. The romance gets quite spicy, so that's something to be aware of, whether you're into that or not. Overall, it's a very easy, light-hearted read that is perfect for the cold season.

My Top TV Couples

Not that anyone cares, but since I'm in quarantine and have been the past 2 months thought I'd make a post about my favorite TV couples of all time. I've been watching a bunch of TV shows and riding this big nostalgia rollercoaster so I need to let out my emotions lol

1. Dan and Blair - Gossip Girl

Okay, I know this one is problematic af, but idgaf they were the least toxic couple on this mess of a show and I love them. Blair was herself with Dan and vice versa (I refuse to acknowledge Dan as GG. That was just lazy writing). Also Penn and Leighton had amazing chemistry (Ed who?)

2. Cappie and Casey - Greek

Quite possibly ABC Family's best show ever, Greek, produced one of the most pure and heartwarming couples. I recently rewatched this show (stream it on Hulu) and I was just hit with so much emotion. Cappie is perfection and his relationship with Casey will always hold a special place in my heart along with this show.

3. Matty and Jenna - Awkward

MTV's show Awkward was my entire life throughout high school so I had to include my OTP Jatty. Although a bit problematic, they were fucking iconic and I'd like to think they found eachother once again and are happily together with a bunch of babies running around. Also Matty McKibben can ruin me.

4. Lois and Clark - Smallville

Smallville is one of my comfort shows. Lana and Clark were cute, but Lois and Clark just hits different. As soon as she was introduced on the show, it was a wrap for Lana. Also Tom Welling and Erica Durance are the best Clark Kent and Lois Lane to ever exist.

5. Jackson and April - Greys Anatomy

They deserved endgame and I'm still disgusted with the way April's story ended. Just like most couples, they went through ups and downs. But honestly to me, they were literal perfection and deserved better.

6. Liam and Annie - 90210

I shipped them so hard in middle/high school and honestly whenever I rewatch this series it takes me back to that time in my life which makes me so happy. This couple belonged together. From day one I knew they were going to be endgame and even though the finale was quite possibly the most rushed mess ever, they're endgame and that's all that matters. Also Matt Lanter is fucking gorgeous.

7. Nathan and Haley - One Tree Hill

Doesn't need an explanation, absolute fucking perfection. Literally no flaws are found here. That is all.

8. Sean and Emma - Degrassi: The Next Generation

Deserved to be endgame!!! Fuck the writers for messing this up and having her marry Spinner. Its been a decade and I'm still disgusted over that nonsense. Anyways, Emma and Sean were soulmates.

9. Jesse and Becky - Full House

One of my first ever OTPs (before I even knew what that was). They make my heart happy and their marriage was goals.

10. Luke and Lorelai - Gilmore Girls

They were the superior couple on Gilmore Girls (sorry not sorry). We all need a Luke Danes in our lives.

the ending of fallen angels (code black s2 finale) makes me sob like i was dehydrated by the end of the episode because i just lost it at the softness of ariel and leanne and the sense of found family that the whole finale had. very fun time for me !

the end scene for community s3 e4 because those idiots dancing around a room gives me so much serotonin it is unreal. i have lost track of the amount of times i’ve watched that scene this year, it’s just so good and wholesome

ummmm i can’t remember the episode because it is late and i am too lazy to google but the orphan black scene where they’re all dancing bc they just dodged a major bullet and i just love it so much bc it makes me Happy. also the song choice just slaps so hard i love it

the scene after beth wins the world championship and we see everyone who supported her lose their minds??? one aspect that wasn’t in the book that i loved so much like the abandoned orphan girl made something of herself and had people who loved and supported her and ugh the love i have for the queen’s gambit is something else

also jatp scene at the end when they realise they can touch each other….. luke and julie holding each other’s faces is something that just means a lot to my touch starved self

Finally finished the new season of Dead to Me today. It was hard to find time to watch with the kids home all the time. It was soooo good.

Still rewatching Community, starting season 5 today. Still love Jeff & Annie so much. More than the first time I watched I think lol.

I’m also rewatching Gilmore Girls for the first time since I watched it when it was actually on tv. Watching episode 8 right now.

Still need a new show to watch though 😂😅

Voglio vivere a Stars Hollow

Nel 2016, in vista dell’uscita della miniserie Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, avevo pubblicato il seguente post su fb. Questa mattina ho rivisto tutte e quattro le puntate, perché funziono così, perché sono costantemente bloccata nel passato, ed è subito stato déjà vu: “Fare il rewatch di Una Mamma per Amica in previsione dell'uscita dell'8° stagione, dieci anni dopo, e rendermi conto di quanto questa serie possa aver influenzato ogni aspetto della mia vita o quasi. Da bambina e da adolescente, capivo metà delle cose di cui Lorelai e Rory farfugliavano speditamente, perché gran parte dei riferimenti di cui era pregna la sceneggiatura era ancora fuori dalla mia portata. Dalla portata di ogni undicenne dell’epoca che cresce anno dopo anno accompagnata dalla loro verbosità, in realtà. Quando ancora i budget immensi, gli effetti speciali, la fotografia impeccabile non erano le sole premesse per la creazione di una serie tv, ma lo svisceramento dei personaggi era l’elemento che le rendeva speciali.   Ed è proprio per questo che, quando ho deciso di cimentarmi nell’impresa (nemmeno tanto ardua) di rivedere tutte le stagioni, ho rinnovato il mio apprezzamento per la serie con commozione (minimizzo, in realtà: ho pianto singhiozzando per due puntate di fila!), notando sfaccettature con occhi nuovi e riscoprendo un’ilarità intramontabile. Ho rivisto ad ogni puntata un compendio di riferimenti e omaggi alla cultura pop e meno pop, che sono tutto quello per cui oggi vivo. Riferimenti, riferimenti ad un ritmo iperattivo. Riferimenti musicali, letterari, cinematografici, culturali e televisivi. E mi è tornato in mente! È stato grazie a Rory Gilmore se mi sono innamorata della Plath, della Woolf e di PJ Harvey, ed è stato grazie a Lorelai, Rory e Lane se ho conosciuto Siouxsie and the Banshees, i Velvet Underground, i The Clash, i Foo Fighters, i Ramones, Belle and Sebastian, i The Smiths, i Sex Pistols, le Hole, i Nirvana, le Bangles, i The Cure e compagnia bella. Il battibecco con Christopher su chi avesse la meglio tra i Metallica e gli Offspring, ha segnato l’inizio dei miei sedici anni. Ed è stato grazie alla storia d’amore con Dean che ho sentito per la prima volta nominare Kafka e che, ancora oggi, continuo a preferire il Willy Wonka con Gene Wilder a quello di Tim Burton. Per non parlare poi degli ettolitri di caffè bevuti presentandomi come la figlia illegittima della Signora Moka e del Signor Espresso (sì, perché ho anche avuto modo di capire da dove provengono il 50% delle battute usate nel corso della mia vita). Odiavo il rapporto con i genitori di Lorelai, così carente di calore, opprimente, fatto di reciproche accuse, incomprensioni, estraniazioni, litigi e apparenze. Odiavo quanto Emily Gilmore non riuscisse ad apprezzare la meravigliosa individualità, l’emotività e l’esageratissima impetuosa personalità della figlia a causa di una visione borghese e con i paraocchi della vita, di un'ideologia imbevuta di "giusto e sbagliato, sì-no" offuscanti e castranti. E desideravo così disperatamente avere accanto una madre come Lorelai Gilmore, che alla fine sono diventata un po’ Lorelai io stessa. i’ve been pondering this while rewatching the first season, and i think that, in the exceedingly unlikely event that there is ever any more arrested development, they should do it like this:

just make, like, a one-hour special (or maybe 90 minutes) rather than trying to tackle a whole new season. the whole cast will be required to be present for said one-hour special, but again, it’s only one hour (or maybe 90 minutes). i mean, i know it won’t take them one hour to make -- probably?? -- but surely that’s got to cut down the commitment time.

make it a bottle episode where all the family members get REAL, like some kind of absurd play. it is entirely dialogue and relationship driven, with not a single complicated outside plot to wrap up.

premise: george sr. died (sorry not sorry) and they are all getting ready for his funeral, but some sort of obstacle prevents them from leaving on time or something, so they’re all just stuck in their black outfits in either the penthouse or the model home, and everyone’s very on edge because it’s an emotionally complicated day. if this is sounding a little gilmore girls: a year in the life, well, gilmore girls and AD are the two famous shows that netflix revived, so i think there’s room for some meta jokes here.

in energy, this ep is like that episode of community where they all stay in the study room, descending into emotional madness, because annie lost her pen and thinks one of the study group members stole it.

it is just, like, bluths bickering with savage intensity, and sometimes veering into profound sweetness or severe emotional vulnerability, while -- and i am very attached to this part -- sitting on sofas just, like, really lazily and ineffectively. maybe there IS a carbon monoxide leak in there.

it’s divided into little acts where each family member gets generally roasted for their most central foibles and insecurities, and maybe there are little cutaways to other things that character has been up to, but nothing too logistically tricky to film.

(MICHAEL IS ALWAYS TRYING TO SAVE EVERYONE BUT REALLY, IT’S BECAUSE HIS ONLY SENSE OF PURPOSE COMES FROM FEELING SUPERIOR TO HIS FAMILY! LUCILLE IS AN ICE COLD, EMOTIONALLY MANIPULATIVE MONSTER! BUSTER KILLED A LADY! GOB IS A HUMAN DISASTER [AND WE ALL KNOW YOU’RE DATING TONY WONDER, STOP ACTING LIKE YOU’RE SUCCEEDING AT KEEPING IT SECRET; IT’S NOT SECRET]! LINDSAY’S SPENT HER WHOLE ADULT LIFE SELFISHLY SEARCHING FOR FULFILLMENT AND NEVER FINDING IT AND ALL SHE’S MANAGED TO DO IS NEGLECT HER FAMILY AND SHE’LL NEVER GET THOSE YEARS BACK! TOBIAS WILL NEVER BECOME AN ACTOR, AND HAS TO BE AT LEAST A LITTLE GAY, RIGHT?? TOBIAS AND LINDSAY HAVE BEEN TERRIBLE PARENTS! MAEBY MIGHT BE A GENIUS SOCIOPATH! GEORGE MICHAEL AND MAEBY ARE DATING EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE .... WHATEVER THE VERSION OF COUSINS IS NOW THAT WE KNOW LINDSAY IS LUCILLE’S SISTER, NOT DAUGHTER???? = just a few of the fun topics for the family to really sink their teeth into.)

(“what will people think about this family now, buddy??” michael asks in dismay re: les cousins dangereux. “what were people ... thinking already?” george michael says delicately.)

actually, now that i think about it, what i am basically envisioning is the final sequence in gilmore girls episode “friday night’s all right for fighting.” and frankly, now that i’ve had that epiphany, i feel even more strongly that this is right for The Final Arrested Development. (rory even brings up the perils of not leaving a note! coincideeeeeence??)

at the end of said episode they all reach a kind of emotional catharsis, and are actually there for each other and ready to do this hard thing together of attending george sr.’s funeral. maybe oscar shows up to go with them to the funeral at the very end, but that’s all i’m giving you, tambor.

AND OF COURSE tony wonder shows up for five seconds at the end to go with gob to the funeral so there’s a dash o’ blunder. “you know how it’s custom for your business-slash-magic rival to attend your father’s funeral with you,” says gob blusteringly. “we all know you’re dating, gob,” michael says. “you just officially came out to us very loudly after like 45 minutes of yelling. you did that dance--” “oh, right,” says gob. “habit. ATTENTION, FAMILY: tony wonder ... is my boyfriend.” tony strikes a dazzling magician pose. “WE KNOW,” yells everyone.)

and the final shot can be the penthouse -- or model home -- door closing behind them, probably after michael and george michael walk out together and have some nice little exchange about family, or breakfast.
