Opinion on modern IP rides? :-333

They’re a mixed bag, but in general I like the direction they’re going. Look at something like Epic Universe, which is a largely IP-based theme park and actually most of the attractions are original stories set in IP worlds. They have their own identity and aren’t just a regurgitation of popular elements from films, video games, etc. In the best cases, IP rides/lands can build on the world in interesting ways. Look at Treasure Cove in Shanghai, or Pandora in Animal Kingdom as good examples of this.

My biggest problem with IP rides has always been that they don’t do anything the movie doesn’t do, or you just redo the movie but worse, or in the case of Fast & Furious just completely fail across the board. But as long as there’s some sort of unique element or reason for the IP to be there, I’m good with it. I’d still prefer a mix of original offerings/rides and IP ones, but I’m not inherently against IP attractions as a concept.

I went to a talk with Tony Baxter where he said Indiana Jones Adventure could have been done without the IP, but it likely would have been seen as a knock-off Indiana Jones anyway, and that the ride was stronger thanks to the IP and everything that comes with it. I generally agree, and think this is true of more modern attractions as well. Monsters Unchained could have been made with generic monsters, but it is a much stronger attraction thanks to the use of Frankenstein, Dracula, etc.

Not everything lands, of course, but when IP hits, it hits. My personal top attractions is a mix of IP and original rides, if that tells you anything,

Knowing you’re a big Marissa Cooper fan, how do you feel about fans comparing her to Serena Van Der Woodsen? Personally, I hate it. I love Marissa but hate Serena.

I... don't love it. But I don't hate Serena, generally. Mostly because when I watched GG as it aired I was also reading a lot of fic and I thought fic writers understood Serena far better than GG ever did. So canon GG is like... not a thing I really care or cared about, lol.

As for the Marissa/Serena comparisons... meh. I think it's lazy. Sure, they're both blonde it girls with Issues. Their core romantic relationships are similarly structured, rich girl with issues meets poor lonely boy. They have quippy brunette best friends, image-obsessed mothers, etc. But anyway, I think it does Marissa SUCH a disservice to compare her to Serena carte blanche. Marissa bleeds empathy for basically anyone she encounters. She's not vindictive or callous (her s2 bratty era is stupid and unserious and I don't care for it). She's just trying to survive, really. I don't think GG ever understood what Serena's character or role even was. Blair is such a better-developed character. Marissa actually feels like a Serena/Blair hybrid to me. She has those Serena qualities I mentioned earlier but then she also has Blair's sensitivity and expectations put on her by her mother. But I think Marissa is a much better person than both of them combined.

And if I'm being honest I think a lot of modern day discourse is really surface level and unserious (derogatory). I much prefer to stick to my little bubbles of analysis rather than watch a video putting two blonde girls from JS shows together because they're sad and pretty and like to drink 🤷‍♀️

ETA: I don't love how I worded that last thing so I just wanna say I love a fanvid but I miss the days of the 2010s when they were on YouTube and set to some OneRepublic-type song and Marissa videos were more than her being sad and messy and cunty.

I'm so glad you're saying the quiet part out loud game fandoms need to start gate keeping again because across the board all video game fandoms have seen a surge of garbage ooc content because the locals only engagement with it is a 3 second thirst cam on tik tok, then they apply the same ol leather dom daddy or uwu baby girl on the sexy white man of the moment rinse and repeat. Or they all come over here declare themselves king shitlord over a blorbo and pump out shittakes and headcanons that feed into an audience that's equally as uninformed or doesn't engage with the medium.

Meanwhile the folks who understand character and story nuances and have played or actually interacted with the games are left with surface level ooc BS to wade through so its very frustrating to see someone proudly admit they skipped out on something as character driven as Mgs and worse still that they have an audience consuming it.

Oh my gosh, yes, the damage that TikTok has done to these games is fucking horrific. They think if they watch 5 fan edits they can call themselves a fan, lol. Literally, they do not care about the games or the character's stories, despite what they say when they're defending themselves from gamers who call them out on their BS. They're just a bunch of brain-dead horny weirdos who invade fandom spaces, not to learn about the material but to force everyone to have to see their NSFW comments all the time (e.g., spamming the tags with smut and spamming people's gifs with their horny fantasies), but then don't produce anything else. No character analysis posts, no meta posts, no actual critiques of the gameplay/structure. Just smut and brain-dead bullshit. And when I say character analysis posts, I mean like actually dissecting the character, not just a fucking screenshot of fandom wiki and people going "uwu guys I didn't know this!" even though it was mentioned in the first 5 minutes of the campaign that they didn't play and/or watch. And then they think they're an authority on the game or a major name in the fandom, or that they even have an equal footing in this fandom, just because they have a couple of gross TikToks w/ a sped up song about some white dude bookmarked.

And yup! I haven't played MGS, but any one who has played video games for more than 2 weeks and has been a part of the subculture can tell you how historically and culturally important that game series is for all video games. And then they're like, not bothering to even play the games or understand the character lore. Just write smut about another blorbo you actually know nothing about and you're too lazy to learn about! Fucking pathetic. And the fact that we have to deal with it all the time, too, like you said? Fucking annoying.

It's also such an insult to the game developers who work countless hours on the games they claim they don't care about, but they're still writing pages upon pages of unrealistic porn about these developers' IP. Like, come on.
