Happy 28th! Here are all the fics I read and loved this month. I can’t say it enough - all you lovely authors in this fandom: my heart belongs to you! ♥ In Repair | teaandtumblr | past LiLo - marriage breakup - past cheating - kid fic - slow burn - angst - anxiety disorders - 36k Louis didn't handle his and Liam's divorce - probably because he never saw it coming and because Liam somehow managed to find the love of his life at the same time. Harry is a daycare worker who really just wants Louis and Liam to get their shit together. No Hold to Hold Onto | kingsofeverything | historical - cowboys - farm/ranch - rodeo competitions - injury - smut - 48k Injured after being thrown from a bronc, Harry doesn’t know if he’ll ever compete again. His only hope is a man called Tommo, a world champion rider who retired at the top of his game. When Harry goes looking for help learning a new way to rope and ride, the last thing he expects to find is love. Do Not Go Gentle | afirethatcannotdie | Grey's Anatomy AU - enemies to lovers - medicine - angst - friends to lovers - friends with benefits - hate sex - minor character death - implied/referenced homophobia - 70k “This is all a game to you, isn’t it? Well, it’s not for me. This is a real life or death situation,” Louis says, spitting the words at him. “And I just don’t think you’re cut out for it.” For a moment, they stare at each other in complete silence. Harry can feel his blood thrumming between his ears, can see Louis glaring at him, feels red-hot anger. And then all he feels, oppressively and desperately, is lust. Suddenly Louis is surging up to him to press his lips against Harry’s. Harry walks the two of them backwards, pressing Louis back against the door. Louis oomphs in surprise and brings his hands under Harry’s scrub top, scratching at his lower back. “Lock — oh — lock the… fucking door,” Louis mutters. When Harry Styles starts his first day as a surgical intern, he expects a lot of things: to treat patients, to observe a surgery, to feel a bit overwhelmed. What he definitely doesn't expect, however, is that the handsome guy he kicked out of his bed this morning is also an intern. A Grey’s Anatomy AU where tensions are high, Harry and Louis are hooking up in secret, and no one has time for love. Or do they? Thrown In Wide Open Spaces | berzerkshires | kid fic - meet-cute - 5k Prompt for 1D Cliché Fest: Meet-cute on a train, where Louis is traveling with the youngest twins and when one of them has a meltdown the other one starts to cry too (obvs twin magic) and Harry steps in to help Louis calm the kids down and decides to tag along the rest of the day to help out, of course they fall in love that day Run with Foxes, Hunt with Wolves | 69louis | a/b/o - 19k Louis and his pack of mostly females are left shaken after they lose their alpha, and soon after males from far and wide travel to their territory to compete for the right to take his place. Louis is thrown into turmoil, fearful of losing another one of his pack mates, and untrusting of the lone males who seem to be growing in numbers everyday, but when a strong stranger steps forward to not only fight to be alpha, but to fight for Louis can he keep his head above water long enough to reach the next full moon? I never thought through love we'd be (making one as lovely as she) | shitucute | a/b/o - fluff - angst - smut - 8k “Have you ever seen him around a pregnant omega before? His face goes all fond and it’s totally awkward, because I swear every time he sees one, it’s like he’s obligated to go ask them if he can put his hand on their stomach and congratulate them. He’s lucky he has nice curls and charming dimples or else he would probably have like three lawsuits and a bunch of creeped out pregnant people.” Zayn says and gives out a little huff of air. Okay, so maybe Zayn has a point. or, Louis's main goal in life is to be knocked up with Harry's kids and he doesn't realize that Harry wants the same. The Tale of Two Kingdoms | larriebane | a/b/o - royalty - enemies to lovers - mild smut - mpreg - 24k ABO-universe with modern language mixed with some new and old traditions, no technology exist (cars, phones, electricity etc.) Prince Louis of Doncaster finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time as the feared Hijackers from Cheshire come to claim their annual pray of omegas. He is taken away and transported to a strange country that Louis has been taught as the enemies’ land. When unforeseen events take place and even more unlikely savior turns up, Louis’ all previous beliefs are being proved wrong. Will love save the two kingdoms and form an alliance after several centuries of feuds between these bordering countries? Final Countdown | Beanno28 | 5 Times - kid fic - smut - 11k Harry and Louis have a son (like 4 or 5yo) and it is really hard to get some when he’s glued to them all of the time. Or the many times the didn't and the one time they do Love is a Compass | lovelarry10 | kid fic - minor character death - grief/mourning - pining - fluff - smut - 27k Louis smiled to himself, knowing what Cameron was hinting at. “Did you want to stay with me in my warm bed?” Cameron nodded as he slipped his thumb back into mouth, fighting to keep his eyes open now. “Please, Lou.” “Sure. get some sleep, okay?” Louis hugged him tighter and closed his own eyes, his arms heavy with the weight of the little boy they were wrapped around. Just as Louis was dozing off, his eyes too heavy to keep open anymore, he heard whispered words that shattered his heart into a million more pieces. “Please don’t go to heaven too, Lou.” ******** Harry waltzes into Louis’ life when everything seems to be crumbling around him. A dad overnight, grief stricken and learning to be a parent as he goes, Harry helps to bring light, laughter and, of course, baked goods back into their lives. Make It Work | fanshae | mpreg - a/b/o - arranged marriage - feminization - smut - 10k Prompt: Arranged marriage AU. Harry is an omega who has reached the age where he must be married due to his family's income status. Only the aristocratic omegas are exempt. His parents try to hide him but eventually the government gets word and in punishment, gives the omega to a spoiled aristocrat son of a lord, Louis. Louis is more than thrilled to have his own omega and once Harry goes into heat, he explores the boy with fascination and unintentionally impregnates him. This leads to a boy used to living carefree and drinking the day away with other nobles to having to face fatherhood. baby I'll never leave (if you keep holding me this way) | we_are_the_same | strangers to lovers - accidental kidnapping - accidental breaking and entering - Lockdown - Covid-19 - no smut - 6k His fingers curl around the first thing he can find that would be suitable as a weapon, an umbrella that has a rather impressive looking metal pin at the end. He holds it in front of him the way he imagines people hold a sword, tiptoeing through his living room until he can find whoever’s in his kitchen. He briefly considers calling 999, figures that if someone’s trying to burgle him, he should probably not be a hero and actually rely on professionals to arrest them, but he’s never been the type to sit back and wait, and -- is that singing? It is singing. Whoever is trying to rob him is in his kitchen, singing an eighties pop song under their breath. And they made cookies? Man, Deconstructed | jacaranda_bloom | strangers to lovers - misunderstandings - smut - 13k Harry doesn’t need help getting laid and he certainly doesn’t need Niall to hire a professional to ‘sort him out’. But when a gorgeous man turns up on his doorstep on his birthday to ‘lay some pipe’ in the back garden (who just happens to have the best arse Harry’s ever seen), his world is upended. OR the one where a well-meaning best mate, a sculpture-worthy arse, and a heaping dose of misunderstanding combine to create sheer and utter chaos, and also, maybe, the best thing Harry’s ever found.

In My Daughter’s Eyes Chapter 10: If Only My Dreams
Chapter 9
Read on AO3
Tumblr media
December 22
Claire, Gillian, and Faith were on their way to the stables. Gillian had insisted on coming, wanting to “see Faith in action,” as she put it. She’d been spending quite a lot of time with her over the past week. Mrs. Lickett would come in the morning to give Faith her lessons and educational playtime, but then she’d leave around noon, so crafts, movies, and the like were all up to Gillian. Claire had left Faith in Gillian’s care all the time back in England, so she was quite confident they’d be just fine, and things had been going swimmingly all week. Faith was quite enjoying her time with her Auntie, and Claire dreaded the day she had to leave, and the meltdown that would probably follow.
But that was a problem for another day.
When they arrived at the stable, Faith insisted on holding both of their hands in the parking lot, giving Gillian the honor of holding Horsie.
“Don’t you let that thing out of your sight,” Claire warned. “If anything happens to it there’ll be hell to pay. And I don’t mean from me.” She eyed Faith, and Gillian nodded in understanding.
“He’s been left before, has he?”
“Indeed. Never making that mistake again.”
They shared a laugh, which intensified as Faith gave a strong yank on both of their hands to make them get inside faster.
“Eager, isn’t she?” Gillian said, smirking.
“She loves it here, you have no idea,” Claire said, her chest warming. “Just wait until you see her with the horse. It’ll make you cry.”
When they got inside, Faith was bouncing as usual, humming loudly.
“Really, I dinna think I’ve ever seen her this excited fer anything that isna Disney,” Gillian said.
“That’s exactly what I said,” Claire laughed.
“Beauchamp gals!” Toni called as they approached the desk. “And who’s this?”
“This is Faith’s godmother, my best friend from back home. Gillian Edgars.”
“Hi, I’m Toni. It’s great to meet you.” She gave Gillian her hand, then a firm shake. She was wearing an obscenely ugly Christmas sweater and a Santa hat. Erica was donning a Santa hat as well, but if she was wearing a sweater, it wasn’t visible under her coat.
“This is Erica,” Claire said. “One of the volunteers that helps Jamie with Faith.”
“Jamie’s the — ”
“Her main therapist, yes,” Claire interjected before Gillian could say anything bawdy. “Shall we?”
Erica nodded and led them outside, Faith holding dutifully onto both hands again.
“That one likes the lasses,” Gillian whispered to Claire once they were outside.
Claire gave her a confused look. “Erica?” she stammered, in shock that Gillian was speculating about a fifteen year old girl.
“No, ye numpty! Toni!”
“How on Earth can you tell?” Claire said.
“I’ve always had an eye fer those things, ye ken.” She winked. “Does this place only employ hot people?”
“Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ…” Claire rolled her eyes and swatted her arm.
When they arrived at the stable, Faith’s excitement went through the roof, as always, and Gillian started laughing.
“She’s just the cutest damn thing I’ve ever seen,” she chuckled as Erica opened the doors.
Waiting inside with Pippi was the six foot Scot, wearing an equally ridiculous Christmas sweater as Toni’s, also donning a Santa hat.
“Ah, there she is! The wee princess!” Jamie exclaimed. Faith giggled at being addressed as such, and she tugged ever harder on their hands.
“And who’s this, then?” Jamie looked to Gillian.
“This is my best friend from across the Atlantic, Gillian Edgars.”
“A fellow Scot,” Gillian said, shaking his hand.
“Ah! That’s braw!” Jamie beamed, then turned to Claire. “This is the godmother then?”
“Yes, this is Auntie Gi.”
“It’s very fine to finally meet ye, lass. Jamie Fraser.” He finally released her hand. “Claire goes on and on about ye.”
“Didna realize ye talked so much,” Gillian said, throwing Claire side-eye. “About me,” she added quickly.
Had Jamie not been standing right there, Claire would have swatted at her arm again.
“Aye. Well, Faith, d’ye want to show yer Auntie yer horse?” He crouched down to her, and she nodded, letting go of their hands. Faith’s muscle memory took over, and she tended to the creature just the way she’d been taught. “This is Pippi,” Jamie said. “Princess Faith’s noble steed.”
“Princess Faith, he says,” Gillian whispered dreamily, and Claire inconspicuously pinched her thigh.
“Are ye excited to show Auntie Gi how ye ride, lass?” Jamie said, and Faith nodded enthusiastically. “Right then, off we go.”
Jamie hung back with Claire and Gillian while Erica led Faith and Pippi. He and Gillian conversed rapidly in Gaelic, leaving Claire feeling rather stupid as she looked in awe between the two of them.
When they arrived at the riding hall, Gillian and Claire leaned against the fence, Gillian amazed how Faith handled the helmet.
“Oh, that was quite a struggle,” Claire said. “Got bit for that one, remember?”
“Right, ye called me that day,” Gillian said, nodding. “She’s so gentle wi’ the horse. Back there in the stable, ye were right, I almost cried like a bairn.”
“Wait until she gets on,” Claire said warmly. “It’s just incredible.”
“And he…is so good wi’ her,” Gillian said in disbelief. “Could God have created a more perfect specimen?”
That earned her another swat on the arm.
“Hi, Claire,” Mrs. Beardsley’s voice had Claire turning around.
“Oh, hello,” Claire said. “Gi, this is Fanny Beardsley.”
They reached over Claire to shake hands.
“This is your wife?” Fanny said, smiling sweetly.
This immediately had them both sputtering, struggling to not disturb the therapy by howling with laughter.
“She wishes!” Gillian exclaimed, earning yet another swat.
“No, no,” Claire said, wiping tears of laughter away. “This is Faith’s godmother. She’s just visiting for Christmas. We’ve been best friends since college.”
“Oh, God, I’m so sorry.” Fanny’s face was bright red.
“No, it’s alright, really,” Claire said, though she was still wheezing.
“It actually happens a lot,” Gillian said. “Lots of rumors back in college. Sadly, this one is straight as a pin.” Gillian patted her shoulder, and Claire rolled her eyes.
They passed the rest of the time watching Faith, Gillian whispering in awe and squealing in delight, clapping along with Claire and Erica when Faith earned celebration.
“She’s braw, Claire,” Gillian said, teary-eyed as Faith dismounted. “I’m really proud of her.”
They embraced each other around the shoulders, Claire resting her head on Gillian.
“Watch this,” Claire whispered. “She doesn’t do high-fives like a lot of the other kids, so Jamie does this with her instead.”
They watched the weekly ritual of Jamie giving his enthusiastic thumbs-up, his lopsided grin warming the chill in the air. Faith returned the thumbs up, bouncing and grinning.
“That is the cutest feckin’ thing.” Gillian shook her head in awe, eyes watering again.
They returned to the welcome center, three of them hand in hand, and Jamie leading the way walking backwards. Toni was ready with three candy canes to hand them when they arrived.
“Merry Christmas Beauchamps, and Auntie Gi.” Toni winked.
“Ah, before ye go,” Jamie said, reaching around the counter and producing a little gift bag. “Merry Christmas, Sassenach.” He handed Claire the bag, his cheeks flushing red. “From the stables,” he added quickly.
Claire’s brow furrowed, but she couldn’t help the tiny smile that graced her face. “Thank you. Merry Christmas, Jamie.”
She peered up at him through her lashes, and her smile disappeared at the sight of the look he was giving her. It was that same look that she’d caught him sporting time and time again, yet she still hadn’t gotten used to it.
What is it?
And why does it take my breath away…?
“Ready to go?” Gillian snapped Claire out of her reverie.
“Yes, yes let’s go,” Claire stammered, smiling perhaps a bit too brightly. “Merry Christmas Toni, Erica.”
“Merry Christmas!” they called in unison.
“Say bye-bye, Faith! Say Merry Christmas!” Faith smiled and waved, then pulled on her hand.
“Onto McDonald’s,” Claire said to Gillian.
“Aye, another delicacy,” she teased.
As they sat in the drive-thru, Gillian’s phone went off, and a sly grin spread across her face.
“What?” Claire asked.
“She texted me already,” Gillian said.
“Who did?”
Gillian turned around the phone to show Claire the screen:
Hi there! It’s Toni!
Claire’s jaw dropped, scandalized. “When did you give her your number?”
“When ye were busy making heart eyes at the Scot,” Gillian smirked and then quickly composed a response.
“I was not making heart eyes,” Claire said vehemently, inching the car forward and rolling down the window.
“Keep telling yerself that.”
——
McDonald’s eaten and milkshakes empty, the three of them were sitting under a blanket again watching Lilo and Stitch. They all brushed their teeth together, and Faith insisted on being tucked in by Gillian. Once that was all settled, Claire and Gillian sat on the couch again together, knowing they could stay up a bit later since Claire didn’t work tomorrow.
“Well? Ye havena opened it yet.” Gillian nudged her head toward the coffee table, where the little bag that Jamie had given Claire was still sitting.
“Oh. I’d forgotten about it,” Claire said, which was a blatant lie. She hadn’t stopped thinking about it since the moment he held it out to her. Truth be told, she was scared to open it. She hesitantly took it in her hands and opened the bag, removing layers of tissue paper.
She couldn’t help the stupid grin that spread wide across her entire face as she pulled out the contents. A bag of Lindt truffles, and a large back of sour patch kids. There was a festive post-it-note stuck to the truffles that said:
To make up for the candy corn. Merry Christmas, Sassenach.
Claire felt her entire face flush red, and her pulse began to race.
“Candy corn? What does that mean?” Gillian prodded.
“He, uh…he made me try candy corn, Halloween week,” Claire stammered. “I hated it, and he asked what kind of candy I do like.”
“Oh my God.” Gillian shoved her shoulder roughly. “Oh my God, Claire! Holy shite!”
“What…? What? Stop it!” Claire shoved her back and put the candy on the coffee table. “It’s just a joke. Relax.”
Gillian gaped at her in disbelief, then shook her head. “I was joking — well, half-joking — when I texted ye back in October, but God!”
“What?”
“How’s the sex?”
Claire’s eyes widened, and she leaned back in shock. “What sex?”
“With Fraser!”
“Jesus bloody Christ! There is no sex!” Claire’s face was hot as hell again, her mouth dry. “There’s no anything! He’s Faith’s therapist!”
“He’s givin’ ye sweets and gifts and ye’re no’ even putting out?” Gillian leaned back into the couch, crossing her arms. “Christ, he must really like you.”
“For fuck’s sake…” Claire scoffed, rolling her eyes. “You’re mad.”
Claire threw the bag on the coffee table, but it landed a little faster than an empty bag should have.
“Is there something still in there?” Gillian said, snatching it at once and plunging her hand inside.
“Gi, stop, stop it! Let me have it!”
Gillian pulled out a hair bow, and her eyes narrowed. “What the Devil?”
“Let me see.” Claire took it from her, and her jaw went slack with realization.
“What?”
“It’s tartan,” Claire said. “The tartan from the clan in Brave.”
“What would ye want wi’ that?” Gillian scoffed.
“It’s not for me…” Claire said, her voice breathy. “It’s for Faith.”
Realization hit Gillian like a bolt of lightning. “Halloween. He wore tartan, and she dressed up from…”
“From Brave,” Claire finished with her.
“Bloody hell…” Gillian said. “He really, really likes ye.”
Claire swallowed thickly against the dryness in her throat, vainly attempting to wet her lips. Her head was spinning, and she could hardly breathe.
“Claire?”
“Well,” Claire said, her voice sounding more strained than she would have liked it to. “As much as I love the Disney movies, how about you and I watch a big-girl movie, hm?” Claire smiled, getting off the couch and retrieving a bottle of wine from the kitchen. “With some big-girl juice?”
Gillian giggled, apparently deciding to not push the subject any further. “Alright. But I’m picking the movie.”
——
Their first Christmas in their new home was nothing short of perfect. Claire had only requested two specific days off for the entire year: Christmas Day, and Faith’s birthday.
Gillian’s present to Claire had already been opened the night before, after Claire had showered from her long shift at the hospital. It was a matching set of Christmas pajamas, with a card that said:
Take this as a promise that we’ll always be together for the holiday.
They cried on each other for a few minutes before donning the pajamas, taking several pictures together in Claire’s full length mirror in her bedroom.
They slept in them and kept them on for presents, just as festive as Faith in her Disney Christmas nightgown. Claire’s present to Gillian was a Long Island t-shirt. Gillian had made a hobby of collecting stupid tourist t-shirts wherever she visited, and Claire had spent plenty of time finding the most touristy Long Island shirt she could.
Faith was beyond thrilled with every single Christmas present she received: her first dollhouse (from Santa), little sets of furniture and little dolls for the dollhouse (from Mummy), and a Merida Barbie doll from Auntie Gi. Claire also decided to give Faith the tartan bow on Christmas morning, handing it to her, saying:
“Look, lovie, another Merida present. This one is from Mister Jamie.”
Never one to be patient, Faith demanded that Claire put the bow in her hair at once, as Auntie Gi was struggling to free the dollhouse from its packaging.
Once Faith was satisfied that every present had been opened and arranged to her heart’s content, they moved into the kitchen to devour the edible arrangement of fruit that Gillian had insisted on getting for Christmas breakfast. Back in the day, Frank made festive pancakes for Christmas morning, and Gillian was determined to start traditions of their own.
Fruit eaten, it was time to start on the Christmas cookies. Claire had purchased several Christmas themed cookie-cutters a few weeks ago, so the three of them made a wide assortment of characters across a wide spectrum of colors. Claire had also bought food dye to use in vanilla icing, so Faith was free to let her creativity run wild, as if she were making edible crafts. All the while, Christmas music played from Claire’s phone, and Faith was humming along and bouncing all day.
Gillian was a slightly better cook than Claire was, so they tag teamed getting the small ham cooked all the way through, along with the green bean casserole (which Faith would not touch with a ten foot pole; she was fine with just ham and applesauce, thank you very much).
Mrs. Lickett had the rest of the holiday week off until the day after New Year’s, and Faith was more than happy to spend the extra time with Gillian. Mary Hawkins had sent Claire a Facebook invitation for a New Year’s party a few weeks ago, and she’d only recently responded that she’d be going. She was uncertain of taking Faith somewhere so crowded, but Mary made it very clear in the description of the event that it would be sensory-friendly. Joe had asked her one day at work if she had any plans for the New Year, surely meaning to invite her over if she didn’t, and Claire felt a strange sense of teenage-like pride in informing him that she did.
Claire’s shift ended at eight, which was exactly when Mary’s party started, so they were only about thirty minutes late. Mary was delighted to have Gillian as well. Despite Mary’s emphasis on a sensory-friendly party, Claire brought Faith’s noise cancelling headphones just in case. Despite the lack of noisemakers, music, or loud television, the constant hum of several voices was making Faith a bit distraught, so Claire put the headphones on her, and after a few minutes of getting used to her silence, she was content again.
Claire was pleased to see a lot of moms she recognized, including Fanny, Kezzie and Josiah running about with Thomas. She was introduced to Mary’s husband, Alex, almost as young as she was. Apparently, Thomas had been a happy accident when they were both still teenagers, and they got married right then. They were quite a sweet couple.
When midnight came, hats and silent paper party-blowers were passed around. The tellie was kept low, and the countdown was done in hushed whispers. The only sound to be heard as the ball dropped was the crinkling of the party-blowers, a few scattered “Yay!”s, and jovial “Happy New Year!”s all around. Faith was quite content watching the paper curl in and out as she blew, giggling every time.
It wasn’t long after that when Faith started falling asleep, along with most of the other kids, all except Thomas. He was still bouncing off the walls somehow. Mary had given Claire a heartfelt thank you for coming, as did Alex. Claire felt as giddy and fulfilled as she had when they’d left the Abernathy home after Thanksgiving.
“That’s a great bunch,” Gillian said as they buckled themselves in.
“Yes…it really is.”
——
The following day while Claire was at work, Gillian had started to pack, being that her flight was on January second, but she didn’t get very far. Evidently, Faith immediately registered that packing meant that Auntie Gi would be leaving soon, and she was quite irritable and weepy for most of the day. She was inconsolable for the most part, only content when she was hanging onto Gillian or sitting in front of the tellie for a few moments of respite with a movie. She hardly touched her food that night, and when Claire had tried to get her to eat, she’d roughly shoved her plate across the table. Claire had permitted Gillian to be the one to give her a stern talking to; eventually she ate enough to satisfy Claire, and Gillian sat with her until she fell asleep.
Gillian returned to the living room to find Claire trying to rearrange her suitcase so it would actually close. She spent a few minutes trying to help, before they both ended up sitting on it in order to zipper it shut.
Gillian sighed. "Puir wee thing thinks she's miserable. I dinna want to leave either."
Claire draped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her in until their heads were resting together, not wanting to speak how she felt, lest she burst into tears.
“Can I ask ye something, Claire? And can ye promise me ye’ll be honest?”
“Of course,” Claire said, releasing her so they could look at each other. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing wrong, or maybe there is. I don’t know.” She sighed. “Ye ken I’ve been seeing Toni, aye?”
Claire shook her head jerkily, blinking in shock. “Um, no, I don’t ken! When have you been doing that?”
“After you and Faith are asleep.” She shrugged, as if it were the most casual thing in the world. “I got an Uber and met her somewhere the first time, now she just picks me up and takes me right to her place. She’s actually quite — ”
“Please, spare me,” Claire interjected quickly. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy for you, of course, but I have to see her interact with my child once a week for the rest of forever.”
“Alright, alright.” Gillian put her hands up in surrender, giggling. “That wasna the point anyway. We dinna just have sex, we talk as well.”
“Well, I should hope,” Claire said wryly. “Be rather awkward otherwise.”
“Och, enough, ye wee prude.” Gillian shoved her arm. “What I’m trying to get at is that you have come up in conversation.”
“Me? In what context?”
“In ‘the Scot has the hots’ context.”
“Oh, Christ, Gi, not this again…”
“I’m serious, Claire,” Gillian said, her eyes widening, no joking in her tone at all. “I brought it up as a joke, ye know me. But then she just rattled off all these things…I’m no’ the only one who sees it. That’s all.”
“Sees what?”
“Are ye daft, woman?” Gillian blinked in disbelief, and then sighed exasperatedly.
“You haven’t asked me a question yet, you know,” Claire said defensively, crossing her arms. “That’s how you opened this conversation.”
“Alright. Fine. Why did ye no’ tell me he was at yer bloody apartment?” Gillian said flatly.
Claire stammered for a moment. “It didn’t seem at all important! Toni told you about that as well?”
“Aye, she did. Didna mean anything by it, just came up in conversation.”
“Right, in conversation about me.”
“Dinna get all fiery on me, Claire. It wasna all about you. She talked as much about Jamie.”
Claire was about to fire back again, but she quickly realized that Gillian was right; she was getting overly defensive and angry, something Gillian was never shy about calling her out on.
“Really. Why didn’t ye tell me?” Gillian asked again, softly.
“It wasn’t conscious…it just didn’t come up.” Claire started picking at a cuticle, focusing her vision there instead of on Gillian.
“Because ye didna want it to come up. Right?”
“It seemed…private. I don’t know. It wasn’t…like you think. Or like she thinks.” Claire hissed in pain at what she was doing to her finger, and Gillian swatted at her hand to make her stop.
“Toni says he makes all these exceptions fer Faith, bendin’ over backwards to make her happy.”
Claire’s head started spinning. “He’s just…being kind.”
“Aye, Claire,” Gillian chuckled. “Because he likes you. A lot more than I even thought.”
“That’s…that’s ridiculous.” Claire shook her head. “My child is his client.”
“Toni says it’s no’ the same as a regular therapist — ”
“Gillian, please…” Claire interrupted, a bit more forcefully than she meant to. “I appreciate what you’re trying to do. Really, I do. You’re my best friend, I get it. And I love you for it. But this…” She leaned forward, resting her elbows on her thighs. “I don’t need this. I don’t need you to play matchmaker like we did in college.”
“Claire…”
“It’s alright, Gi. I’m not angry, I promise. I just…” She sighed. “I don’t need…I don’t need to be rescued anymore. Do you know what I mean? These past few months, just me and Faith…god, I’ve never felt so good about myself. I mean, hell, I’ve had doubt upon doubt creep into my mind, and not every day is good. But she is thriving here, and so am I. I don’t have to explain myself or my parenting to anyone anymore. And…fuck, Gi, I love it. I finally feel like…like I’m doing right by her.” She was surprised to feel the tears in her eyes, and she swallowed to keep them at bay. “For four years of her life, I was this…shell of myself. And god damn it, I pulled myself out of that. I know I had your help, always, and now I have Mrs. Lickett, and the Abernathy’s, and the whole community at the stables…but I did this. For her…and now I realize it was for me, too.”
Gillian put a hand on Claire’s knee. “I understand, hen.”
Claire nodded. “Jamie is incredibly kind, and thoughtful, and he’s done a lot for us. But it’s not what you think, and I don’t need…what you think it is. Faith doesn’t need that. She needs me. I need me. Am I…making any sense?”
“Ye are. Ye dinna have to explain yerself to me, Claire. I’m sorry,” Gillian said sheepishly. “Ye know me. Canna keep my neb out of anyone’s business. Least of all yers.”
Claire offered a tiny smile, then laid her head onto her shoulder. “Will you be seeing your American lover for one final tryst before you depart?”
Gillian snorted. “Nae, we’ve already said our goodbyes. Keeping it casual, ye ken. She’s just out of a relationship and all that.”
“Right. Well I’m glad you had that, however brief. Been a while since you’ve been with a woman, hasn’t it?”
“Aye, ye’re right! I was feeling starved for female affection after years of male disappointment!”
Claire guffawed loudly, and they both dissolved into a fit of giggles that carried into the wee hours of the morning.

(Let me know if you want to be tagged in future parts!)
Virgil stayed in his little nest for quite a long time, he was too content to leave his spot and either Zoe or Patton seemed like they had anything to say about it. The day passed by with him and Patton watching movies together. They watched Winnie the Pooh, Lilo and Stitch, and Tangled, before Patton had to get up and call Logan to help make dinner. It was interesting watching these movies and seeing the stories they had to tell. It was similar to seeing pictures but rather then it being still they moved in complicated and complex ways. And he rather enjoyed it.
His favorite they watched so far was Lilo and Stitch. He saw himself in Stitch in a way. Being an outsider and feeling like everything they touch ends up ruined. But it turned out alright for him… Would it turn out okay for Virgil? Well,…so far he guessed it has. Maybe Patton and Logan are his Lilo and Nani? He could see the similarities between them…
While they made dinner and even when they ate, Virgil was quiet. He didn’t say much as the two spoke about their day. Which he didn’t have a clue as to what they were saying so he decided it might be better if he doesn’t speak at all. At least by doing so, he won’t make more of a fool of himself or they won’t get upset with him. Patton kept trying to get him in the conversation but he couldn’t contribute much in any case. Though he appreciated the effort, even if he didn’t understand why they even wanted him to talk. Let alone why they wanted him here eating with them at all.
Once dinner was done Patton had to do some work and Logan went back to his room. He’d didn’t know what else to do so he tried fiddling around to watch some more movies but he couldn’t figure it out. Instead of going to bother Patton he’d decided to just sit there and wait.
And he found that he’d fallen asleep there, nestled into the weighted blanket and Zoe still on him, after quite a bit.
Course he woke up with another nightmare which made him jerk awake. He found that he’d been crying and that Zoe left. Neither he could remember what the nightmare was and that he’d apparently have been asleep for some time indicated by the fact the place seemed quiet and dark. At least he’d had a nightmare when neither of them was near him, that’s good.
So he laid back down again trying to get himself to calm back down and go back to sleep. Course that didn’t happen for a long time. While he was awake he simply stared at the ceiling. And that’s when he noticed a pillow and another blanket folded on his feet. Guess one of them must’ve given him this…
Grabbing the pillow and the other blanket he curled up into a ball and waited. And waited. And waited, for sleep to eventually get to him.
Throughout the night he kept rolling side to side and waking up. Huffing he finally gave up and watched outside from the window until the sun came up. But still, he didn’t move in fear of one of them getting upset that he moved from his spot.
So when drowsy Logan came down that early morning to find eyes peeking out of a blankets nest staring right at him, it might’ve given him a fright. Not that neither of them said anything about it to anyone later on.
One good look at Virgil must’ve told Logan everything for he gave him a sympathetic look then told him to take a shower if he wanted to. To which Virgil happily agreed and took the chance.
By the time he got out of the shower Patton had woken up and was already eating some breakfast. And he guessed he looked better as Logan didn’t mention his appearance.
During breakfast, Patton mentioned the walk again and he offered that Virgil could come and maybe Logan. Logan agreed and to Virgil that seemed…better than staying here alone. So after breakfast, they started getting ready but they had a bit of a complication with Virgil’s wing and tail.
“Do you think a thick jacket might be enough to cover it up?” Patton asked.
“Maybe? It might bulge out though. We could try.”
The two went back and forth while Virgil was silent and perfectly still. He didn’t know what to do so he figured his best bet was to let them figure it out. He’s never had to hide his traits so this was weird to him.
He put on another one of Patton’s jackets but Logan said it wasn’t thick enough to hide the wing nor the tail.
“Hm… Maybe we should try another bulker jacket? Or he can wear two? Oh! Lo, don’t you have a thick black one? Remember the special one?”
“I do… However, you know I don’t like to give it away, Patton.”
“No! No, I know it’s your special one for when you have your meltdowns. I won’t ever give it away, but can he borrow it? Just for a bit until we come back then I’ll wash it for you?” Patton rushed out.
Logan didn’t look too convinced, however, when he looked between Virgil and his wing then back to Patton he sighed then crossed his arms. “Okay… This is the only option, you do need to get out anyways, Virgil. It’ll be healthy for you.”
“I do m-miss being outside…” Virgil said quietly. “L-Like the fresh air…”
Logan nodded, “Alright then. I’ll go get it.” Logan then headed to his room and he wasn’t back for a bit. In the meantime, Patton kept Virgil busy by discussing where they normally go for their walls. He did mention something about wanting to stop by a ‘cafe’ to say hi to somebody. Whatever that could mean. But Virgil, nonetheless, was excited about going outside again. He’s already missed it even though it’s only been a day since he was last out. After spending his entire life in small rooms he guessed he just craved the fresh air and openness of outside.
“Found it. It’s rather dusty and a bit wrinkled however it appears to still be in good condition. Apologies for that.” Logan came back in the living room carrying a solid black plaid hooded jacket. And when they helped him put it on he realized it was rather thick. It reminded him of the weighted blankets but it wasn’t quite as heavy as that. It felt rather nice. Shrugging he mumbled, “I-Its alright… It’s c-comfy.”
Logan smiled faintly at that, “Glad to hear that. It appears to hide your wing rather well as we inspected too.” As he said that both of them took a step back and could see clearly that it did indeed hide it pretty well. Course there was still a slight bulge but if somebody wasn’t purposely looking for it they couldn’t tell it’s there. Virgil looked over his shoulder to see that his wing was indeed gone and blinked. “H-Huh… Thanks…”
“Don’t mention it. Now for your eyes, you can put up the hood and that should do it. You can just say it contacts and it should be fine,” Logan inquired.
“Thanks a lot, Lo. You are a lifesaver! Now we can get going!” Patton beamed and skipped in place to the door, him bouncing up and down. Zoe right beside him wagging her tail. Logan rolled his eyes and headed towards the door grabbing the last few things. When he opened it Patton rushed out with Zoe giggling loudly. Virgil did smile faintly at how energetic the young human was and he placed his hands in the pockets while putting up the hood, then he walked out with Logan.
As soon as the cool air hit him he took a breath in letting the crisp air hit his face. And his faint trace of a smile got a tad bit wider at that. He couldn’t get enough of this feeling. He felt more alive then he’s ever been like this.
It felt weird being exposed like this, however. When he was hiding away before they found him he never would walk out on the sidewalk when there were always a lot of people. He would always wait until the dead of night if he absolutely had to do so. And he didn’t like this exposure one bit. He kept practically glued to Logan’s side since Patton always was a bit ahead and kept his head down. Every time he would bump into somebody he cringed and his hands tightened in his pockets. And he still wasn’t used to the loudness either.
The weird vehicles rushing by and their honking noises that blasted his eardrums every time. The loud music that would blast out of them so loudly that he could practically feel the vibrations through his feet and ground. The people rushing past him, some talking loudly into devices of sorts and some not.
Maybe..he should have grabbed one of Patton’s fidget toys or the headphones… Curses…
He wasn’t sure how much time has passed but it felt like an eternity to him. He was quiet the entire walk until he couldn’t take it anymore and finally, he whimpered loudly. In the corner of his eye, he could see that Logan had turned to look at him but somehow even that was too much and he whimpered again.
“Virgil? What’s wrong?” Virgil instantly winched at his voice. Logan sounded worried. Why was he worried? He shouldn’t be worried.
Virgil didn’t want to say anything, he suspected that he might not be able to right now, and with a shaky hand, he pulled it out of his pocket. Somehow he was able to peel the fingers out of his tight fist and brought the finger to his ear. Pointing at it he whined then brought the palm of his hand to his ear attempting to block out the noises.
Luckily he didn’t need to say anymore as Logan instantly nodded and came closer his voice way lower than before and Virgil appreciated that. “Your experiencing sensory overload, Virgil. It’s alright. Here,” Logan glanced over to Patton who was at a nearby tree letting Zoe sniff it. With one glance back towards him he went over and talked to Patton quietly. Virgil couldn’t hear what they were saying but he didn’t try to. He placed another one of his hands up towards his ear and twisted it closing his eyes shut tightly. Why are humans so loud?! Why did they have to shout?! Why did they have such loud vehicles?! Why did-
“Virgil?” He whipped up to see Logan was back, “Patton is going to continue his walk. In the meantime would you like to head home or go to the cafe that Patton wanted to go? Either one is alright. The cafe would be a lot quieter then out here I can promise you that.” His voice was a whisper.
Virgil didn’t want to go back yet, he wasn’t ready to leave the fresh air. So he chose the second option. “C-C-Cafe…” Even his breath was more stuttery then normal. Yep, he’s shaking big time.
“Okay. Would you like to hold onto me? Or I can hold onto you? I can guide you there and you can keep your eyes closed if that helps, alright?” Logan's voice was cool and collected, it helped him focus onto it as it wasn’t chaotic as all the other sounds. Heat rose up and down his spine to his head sending the feeling of fire bursting in his mind. The weight of the jacket suddenly felt like too much but too little at once. His hands felt stiff, his legs felt wrong, his-
One nod from him and one hand reached out to Logan were all it took. Carefully Logan grasped onto Virgil’s fingers being extra careful and gentle with it. And he didn’t hold onto his hand fully either, only the fingers. The touch should’ve made him jump back or be scared in some way but instead, it helped him hone into it. Logan’s hand was freezing cold compared to his warm ones. Cold. Cool. Icy..
“Keep breathing. In for four. Out for eight. It’s alright, I’ll repeat.” He heard Logan say through his tunnel. Honestly, he wasn’t even sure if he was breathing. Every shout and screech of tires sent a stab of pain through his head. Just as Logan inspected he had to screw his eyes shut, the sun becoming even too much despite how much he’s grown to love it. His available hand reached towards his ear to block out the noise.
He wasn’t even aware that they started moving so when he heard a weird bell being rung above them he whimpered. Straight away he took notice of the smells that rushed towards him. He wasn’t exactly sure what the smell was but whatever it is it smelled delicious and sweet. It smelled almost like Logan’s jam that he liked…
The next thing he noticed was the silence. There was faint music playing in the background and occasionally he could hear voices but they were way lower then they were outside.
When he opened his eyes finally he glanced around to see the place was darker than outside was. Yeah… Yeah, this is way better.
Tension left his body the instant all these sensations hit him.
He felt Logan lead him to a table and he sat down. Blinking against the tidal waves he was able to see Logan looking at him with mild concern. “You okay now?”
“B-Better… Lots…be-better… Not so lo-loud… T-Thanks..” He said slowly trying not to get the piercing pain back again, and he noticed even Logan’s words were silent like his which he appreciated greatly.
“That’s good to hear. I can order something if you want? Or if you want to freshen up the bathroom is down there,” Logan informed him while pointing down a hallway. That does sound good…
“Y-Yeah… Okay, I’ll be right back..” He mumbled while standing up, which he was also grateful for the fact that it wasn’t as wobbly. It didn’t feel like putty.
While he was walking there, however, he felt strange eyes boring in the back of him. He’d looked over his shoulder quickly and glanced around the quiet place. But there was only a handful of people and they were busy chatting with each other or typing away at their strange devices. Nobody was looking at him…
Swallowing thickly he tried to push that feeling aside and he hid his face more into the hoodie. It’s gonna be his imagination… Yeah…
He pushed open the door and stepped inside, luckily there was nobody in here and he drew out a shaky sigh. Just as he was heading towards the sinks the door opened behind him and closed. When he glanced over his shoulder he saw a rather tall skinny guy. He’d wore a black leather jacket with a white undershirt. His hair was swept to the side and was dyed a pastel purple color. His pants were black and leather too. And though it was indoors he wore sunglasses, and Virgil thought that was sorta odd as he’s never seen any human wear that inside.
In any case, he looked pissed. And was staring right at him.
Virgil was just able to turn around before the man walked quickly up to him. All he could do was blink and the man grabbed him by his jacket scruff and was able to pull him off the ground, seemingly by ease. Snarling he brought Virgil close to his face, his lips drawing back to reveal sharp teeth. Then he lowered his sunglasses so Virgil could see his eyes and what he saw there made him even more scared then he was.
The color of his eyes was bleeding red. His pupils were slits and it…reminded Virgil of his own eyes.
Whimpering he tried to get out of his grip but it was way too strong. There’s no way there's another one of him?! How is that possible?! Did he managed to escape that place too!?
“Lowlife, look at me,” The man growled and Virgil snapped to attention, he was even using a similar voice that he used when he’s anxious and scared. It sounded more warbled through, more powerful. “I don’t know what your intentions are, babe, and frankly I don’t give a shit. But this is my prey. My land. And I won’t have some runt of a demon hog my prey. Take your pathetic ass and scram before I hurt you or that tasty prey that you brought here. Got it?”
Prey… What the hell is he talking about?! But Virgil decided to agree anyways. Quickly he nodded his head eagerly not wanting to agree with this man one bit. If he was one of him, which he definitely appeared so, then he seemed more powerful then him just by his voice. He didn’t look like he had any horns though he could be hiding his wings and tail in that jacket.
“Say it, runt. I need some vocal agreement, hun,” He said with a growl his red bleeding eyes glowing brighter. Virgil definitely felt like those eyes could pierce through his body if he didn’t agree right now.
“Y-Yes! Y-Yes! So-Sorry!!” His voice dangerously squeaked. He must sound so pathetic right now. And he tried to not have his body shake or shrink away in his grasps. Well…too late for that. And this man must’ve felt it as he raised an eyebrow.
“Wow… What a pathetic excuse for a demon… Thought you’ll put up more fight. Well, babes, nice chatting with you in any case. And we better not meet again, sweet thing.” The man smiled sweetly then suddenly dropped him. Virgil cried out as his butt hit the tile floor and he looked on in horror as the man gave him one smirk than a wink. With that, he finally left walking out like nothing happened, with his hands in his pockets and a smile on his face.

While genetically the Boy and Five are the same there has to be an aspect of nature vs nurture. So how do the two differ? Does the Boy want his own name and not simply a gender or does he want a name to symbolize becoming part of a family? Do the two of them react to situations differently? I love this AU so much and I need more!
(for more commission boy au/clone five au check out the previous posts on it one, two, three, four, five)
oh absolutely they’re as different as they are similar - even identical twins raised together are different people, after all! And that’s identical genes (like Five and Boy share) and similar upbringings ;3c
they’re both traumatized in very different ways (with overlapping similarities, like both of them don’t trust strangers/adults they don’t know as they’re both used to adults only wanting to use them/cause them pain)
Five is fucked up about the apocalypse. Fucked. Up. He still has minor meltdowns over what if the apocalypse happens today despite them having stopped it. Probability maps are scrawled across the walls in whatever was closest at hand when Five’s brain went into meltdown mode
The Boy doesn’t use math as a crutch like Five does (or as a way of keeping his mind busy, or as a self soothing habit, or anything else) because he wasn’t allowed to write on,, pretty much anything. He had to give verbal reports. After Five’s whole “hide my equations and plans from the commission by writing them in secret in a book” thing, they didn’t trust the Boy with any kind of planning materials. The only reason he knows how to write is because he pretty much taught himself, tracing letters with his fingers in the dust or on steam covered mirrors tbh
(his handwriting is. atrocious. borderline illegible. he really struggles writing with a pen or pencil but can fingerpaint letters/numbers just find. it’s a work in progress and on god five is going to get his little clone as fast as five himself is at writing shit on walls)
the Boy is still a little math prodigy but he’s only done enormous mental equations, which he is very good at!! but it’s definitely limited him (so he wasn’t capable of doing the complex time equations that Five figured out)
The Boy and Five present their nerves about new situations very differently - the Boy goes small and quiet and anxious whereas Five deals with it by going on the aggressive and yelling. This is because the Boy is way more afraid of punishment/rejection than Five is and is more unsure of his position in the family and his default is “obey, do what they say regardless of how you feel just power through it or face the consequences”.
Meanwhile Five’s default was ‘rebel, yell, bring attention to himself because if the spotlight was on him then it was off his siblings’ which is depressing in its own way. The Boy didn’t have siblings to protect, he was alone. Five himself probably wouldn’t have drawn attention to himself if there wasn’t anyone to protect, but there was and he did. He bristles like an offended cat and yells
(but tbh, Five doesn’t actually expect anyone to actually listen to him. both him and the boy learned a long, long time ago that their opinions didn’t matter to the adults, that they might as well not be saying anything at all. The Boy went quiet. Five got louder.)
The Boy is definitely more willing to embrace childish things than Five is, because Five feels he has to protect his reputation and prove that he isn’t a kid
and if there’s some residual trauma there of children vs. adults where Five is fairly convinced that status as an adult offers him some measure of protection against people like Reginald and the Handler, there’s always that. But Five is also probably more willing to be one of “the children” if that means the Boy isn’t alone as the only child because Five’s “protect” instincts overpower his “self preservation” instincts tbh
the Boy is really enthusiastic about things when he thinks he allowed to be (so basically when he’s around Five bc he sees Five as an ally - though he’s getting better around the other siblings without five as a buffer)
his favorite movie is lilo and stitch no you can’t change my mind. it’s the movie he plays constantly as a comfort thing that he never gets tried of. If this was in the era of VHS he would have worn out the tape. Why??? because the boy points at the screen and is like “!! i’m an experiment as well!” and then watches this little blue alien find a family for himself and he’s like “it me!”
…does that make Five the Lilo in this?? possibly. Allison says that it’s more like the Boy is Lilo and Five is Stitch considering Five is the chaos gremlin between the two of them but whatever
(“This is my family. I found it, all by myself. It’s little, and broken, but still good. Yeah, still good.”)
I keep wanting to say the Boy is more skittish than Five but that’s?? not quite true? they’re both skittish and don’t trust easily and cling to the idea of family but in different ways idk like the end goal is the same but they take very different paths to it u know what i mean?
i think the Boy probably does eventually get a different name. Maybe not a name-name since the Boy’s idea of what a name is?? is kind of skewed? like his fav character is Stitch and his brother is Five and he was raised by someone names the Handler like this kid was never gonna have a normal name let’s be real
honestly he probably ends up stuck with something like. Kiddo. Because i HIGHLY doubt the family actually calls him ‘boy’ and in absence of an actual name to call him by end up with nicknames and to differentiate him from Five “Old Man” Hargreeves they probably call him kid and kiddo
i’m thinking about differences and similarities between them again hmm
Five is definitely more assertive?? Five can read the Boy really well (and vice versa) and tends to act as the Boy’s spokesperson when the Boy isn’t comfortable or something. Usually it’s just Five cutting in abruptly like “back off idiot he wants a ham and cheese sandwich not whatever the fuck that is”
the Boy is more likely to approach an issue with violence whereas Five tends to swear and yell and threaten as a first step. Where’s that one meme?? the Boy is “stabs without warning” and Five is “warns (loudly) before stabbing”
the Boy is arguably more deadly than Five since he’s been trained in assassination since basically infancy where Five was taught to be a hero which are arguably very different skillsets (the Boy was never taught about minimizing casualties or saving anyone rip) BUT Five is more experienced and has arguably more creativity than the Boy.
Five is a lot more playful in his fighting because he was because when he was little, fighting was playing. That’s how Five and the other umbrella academy kids bonded - by beating the tar out of one another and outdoing each other. They showed off for each other. The Boy is more straight forward because to him, fighting is a job to get over with as soon as possible
ironically it’s five who has to teach the boy to play, and not the other way around. Jump Tag is a favorite between the two where they just zoom through the house trying to catch each other - Five is a lot better at jumping than the Boy since the Boy wasn’t permitted outside of missions and training, but he’s catching up quick (after all, Five did take a brief 45 year hiatus because his powers burned too many calories in the apocalypse, but it’s a bit like riding a bike in that he never forgot)
even so Five is NOT the person to teach others to play because his childhood was messed up as all fuck
so it’s probably claire that really teaches them how to play
Claire is a well adjusted kid whose confidence, unlike Five’s, is not faked. She has adults she knows, loves, and relies upon. She has healthy relationships with peers. She goes to public school and knows and is friendly with a lot of different people.
So this like, 8-year-old walks in and meets her two skittish emotionally immature uncles (cousin? depends on if they consider the boy to be five’s brother or son) who don’t know fuck all about anything and is like “ah yes. i am your big sister now. i am in charge here.”
and while Five at least rails against the “big sister” charge, neither of them really protest Claire taking charge?? they’re both very willing to follow along behind her tbh neither of them are leadership material and they both know it. they’re probably both very protective of her
if claire is ever bullied god help whoever chose to pick on her bc Five is absolutely willing to maul a middleschooler and the Boy would be right behind him
well i mean. Five is a follower but he’s a little bitch about it, you know? like he’s willing to go with whatever but also if it’s a dumb idea then fuck you. So he’s confrontational with his siblings but if they were ever like “okay then five you take charge” he would be like “oh no. nuh uh. i’m not taking responsibility over all you idiots my blood pressure would go through the ROOF.”
Five loudly declares that Claire is way more sensible and sane than any of the rest of his family so she’s the only one he’ll take real orders from.
(and then Grace walks in and Five will absolutely listen to her as well and not just because the Boy is lowkey scared of Grace and Five is trying to set a good example - as much as he’s capable of setting a good example)
i feel like i’ve talked about their different issues with food, where Five hoards, is food aggressive, and will eat everything whereas the Boy is used to bland nutrition bars and sludge with everything he needs for the day so his issues are more him not knowing what the fuck anything is, being iffy about any strong tasting foods/spices, struggling with eating outside of allotted food times/getting his own food
there’s a whole post about their differences in nightmares/how they deal with those floating out there somewhere
their fashion sense definitely differs in their own ways? The Boy accepts anything he’s given with no questions and has no style of his own where Five tends towards what Klaus calls “hobo chic” in that he discards clothes he deems not useful to survival. You won’t catch Five in ripped jeans or tight pants that restrict mobility (though admittedly tight restrictive clothing would make the Boy uncomfortable as well but he’ll wear what he’s given with no questions)
both boys struggle with capitalism in that there’s Way Too Many Options for things that are dumb. It’s really overwhelming for them both when they’re sent to the store for like, toothpaste and have to enter an aisle with a bajillion different options for one (1) whole thing
OH the Boy doesn’t shoplift. Five frequently shoplifts because his idea of possessions are “it’s in my hand or in my claimed space/room/etc. it’s mine” regardless of the passage of money whereas the Boy’s idea of possessions is “nothing belongs to me ever” and they’re still working on both of those things
they’re both kind of wary around animals because neither are used to them or know what to expect from them. Mr. Pennycrumb is a therapy dog and no one can convince me otherwise and both boys are instantly smitten with him (but they’re still kind of iffy around like. big dogs that bark. or horses. fuck horses they’re scary motherfuckers.)
the Boy doesn’t like bugs very much after living in the very sterile Commission science rooms but Five will literally pop a wolf spider in his mouth for a snack so yEAH they both have. very different perspectives on that. The Boy is absolutely horrified and the first time he witnesses this hides behind Klaus for half a day because what the FUCK FIVE while Five is unapologetic
they protect each other and support each other and figure things out together bless
it’s secretly a very wholesome au behind the horror of the commission cloning five and training a small child to be a murder machine

I would love to hear more about Roman! -📻
Roman is awesome tbh and pretty badass
He has many gymnastics trophies he’s a very good gymnast
He had some trouble with stuff at first and still struggles with some of the larger moves due to poor gross motor skills but he still picks up new stuff pretty quickly
His favorite stuff to do is floor stuff, he’s less fond of the bars b/c chalk is a bad texture
But he does enjoy the foam block pit on occasion
Roman has been secretly helping set up a class for disabled kids to learn gymnastics that he plans to TA and he’s very excited
His main SpIn has been Disney since he was a baby
Fond of Bambi (1942), Lilo and Stitch (2002), Treasure Planet (2002) because of their release dates
Loves all the Disney princess movies
Also loves Oliver and Company and The Jungle Book
He goes as something Disney every year for Halloween
He has literally so many Disney stuffed animals
Has a giant 40” Mickey Mouse stuffed animal
Roman is a huge fan of big noticeable stims. He likes to leap and bounce and twirl and take up space. A lot of body movements feel incredibly pleasant to him, and he loves moving.
For the most part, Remus and Roman get along quite well. They do a lot of things together and are super supportive of one another.
They do argue occasionally, and when they do it’s usually about serious things. They almost never have petty fights.
Roman is 90% non-verbal and when he does speak it’s in Disney quotes. He uses both his tablet and ASL to communicate.
As a kid he used a PECS board but much prefers a tablet. With a PECS board he often get very frustrated because the cards weren’t lined up Right and he’d have compulsions to redo them which often lead to meltdowns
Koda and Roman are best friends. Roman doesn’t go on walks/runs with him as often with Remus, but he loves to play fetch with Koda, play tug, and wrestle
Roman is incredibly protective of his hair and will scream at you if you touch it without permission (and very few people have permission)
Roman’s closest friends besides his brother are probably Patton and Logan due to knowing them the longest and having classes together.
Plus Roman likes Disney and Patton likes cartoons!!
Roman and Virgil got off to a bit of a rough start (understatement) but they become good friends in their own time
Roman struggles to balance OCD and autism. OCD means he ends up having a lot of compulsions. If he isn’t able to complete the compulsions or if he keeps having them, that’s a quick way to trigger a meltdown or shutdown

Day Seventeen - The Betrayal of St. Lucy
The interailees had originally agreed to wake up earlier in order to start the tour of Diocletian’s Palace and surrounding area before the heat of the day, however, we still didn’t leave the apartment until after 10.
We spent the morning and early afternoon wandering around the area, climbing the bell tower - (which seemed rather unsteady!) and visiting the crypt of St. Lucy. Here Catherine decided on a utilitarian method of getting rid of her excess change by ‘donating’ them to the 'sacred’ well in the hope of some good fortune for the interailees. Clearly the newly purchased (in several different currencies) 'luck’ hadn’t kicked in by the time we left the crypt since we spent a good half an hour attempting to locate yet another illusive 'site’. This time Jupiter’s temple, which Grace helpfully reminded us we had seen from the bell tower 'somewhere that way’, was the object of our search. Fortunately this was not entirely a repeat of Berlin and the temple was not, like the wall, on the other side of the city, but instead right under our noses.
In our attempt to enter the Cathedral following this, we realised we were extremely underdressed. Far from the 'modest’ clothing the ticket saleswoman had in mind, we were sporting strapless dresses and sun tops, as a result of which she, looking us up and down in distaste, politely inquired whether we had any clothes. Shaking our heads like scolded children, we were consequently forced to borrow some rather unbecoming shawls which were apt punishment for our fashion faux-pas.
As the morning’s exploration progressed around Diocletian’s palace, it became increasingly clear to the interrailees that this 'luck’ Catherine had purchased was certainly of dubious quality, whatever she or St. Lucy had insisted. Their doubts came to a head when Hannah was spotted by her dance coach, Clare, who she hadn’t seen for two years. This incredible coincidence reunion was just the first of many as we bumped into Clare again… and again… and again! Clearly 'St. Lucy’ had misinterpreted our order of what type of luck we were after….
Attempting to put these disconcerting thoughts behind them, the interailees hoped the afternoon would have better things in store. Rushing back to 'Luxury’ Apartment Volat for a quick tidy up before the scheduled (and eagerly anticipated) arrival of the mysterious owner “Zeki” to collect the money for our stay. The suspense of this meeting had begun at the moment of our arrival at the apartment when Zeki was conspicuously absent in the place of his wife who greeted us, heightened when Yfke perused some of the text messages left on the apartment’s mobile phone. The series of messages left to the long suffering Zeki, recounted the many unfortunate events of previous inhabitants in which Zeki was invariably called to the rescue. As a result, the interrailees waited with bated breath for the appearance of the man, the myth, the legend…Zeki.
It was at this moment, however, that the infidelities of St. Lucy were truly revealed. Although Hannah began the tidy of the room in positive spirits, it was at this moment that Catherine and Yfke’s “Kardashian affliction” resurfaced…with full vengeance. Although attempting to inspire the other interrailees by example, the addiction proved too much to fight and Hannah was forced to admit defeat. The apartment remained a tangle of the vomited contents of four rucksacks. As a result, when a knock came at the door a few minutes later, the interailees were wholly unprepared for Zeki’s arrival. When Catherine deigned to let him in, hastily stuffing her underwear underneath a nearby cushion, Zeki, aghast at our mess, stood in the doorway, mute. The interrailees stared back at him like a group of 'stuffed frogs’. The embodiment of bathos itself, Zeki was…a disappointment. Weak chinned, clutching his motorbike helmet that did little to emphasise his masculinity, the meeting lasted all of two minutes, after which the interrailees were left to swallow their disappointment.
Following this, we headed out to the supermarket to find something for lunch. This was to be the location of Yfke’s epic meltdown when St. Lucy again deserted us. It has to be said that the group have always had a certain problem with indecisiveness, especially when it comes to food. And so, it was in the middle of the cereal aisle Yfke finally reached breaking point. The dilemma we faced was what to have for lunch given that we were going out later, and were already fed up of cheese sandwiches and crackers. Being forced to contemplate pasta for a third time was a prospect that no one was particularly enthused about. Taking charge, Yfke stormed through the supermarket aisles in search of alternatives. But to every suggestion she gave, she was shot down by the rest of the interrailees. Negative responses to pasta, sandwiches, crackers, cereal and yogurts finally drove Yfke over the edge at which point she erupted with frustration: 'JUST MAKE A DECISION!’ A long winded conference at the end of the pet food aisle resulted in their “decision”…which was to come back later….
“Later” was spent on the nearby beach which was packed full of people and lilos. Almost immediately we had to venture into the sea and test the water (which was nice and warm!) as well as top up the tan. It wasn’t until late that we returned to the hostel before dinner, leaving a nice depository of sand for Zeki in our wake. - C, G, H & Y xxxx

Note
(1/?) Hiya. For my story I'm still plotting out the characters, one who'all be autistic. Idea is that a bunch of people are kidnapped/experimented on/get superpowers. Story revolves around them dealing with that trauma while trying to help people. Inspired by Lilo and Stitch and Deep Blue Sea, I was imagining a young autistic girl who gains some shark-traits, but mainly telekinesis. However I don't want to dehumanize her. Should I cut the shark parts entirely? Create more autistic characters?
(2/?) I’m planning for the main character (who will have ptsd) to adopt the autistic girl and they are able to talk about the different workings of their brains. Another character whose powers involve hyper-senses works with her to find ways to cope. All the other kidnapees care for her and want to help since most of them are adults, and slowly realize she might be the most powerful of them all, and she ends up being the one who saves the day in the end. I’ve planned stims and special interests.
(3/3) I don’t want to make her a stereotype, so what can I do better? Are there representations of autistic characters as heroes you would prefer to see or haven’t seen before? Do you think it’d be better to show her going to school or being homeschooled? Are there specific autistic-child stereotypes I should avoid? What things should the adults do so both she and the reader know they love her? Are there common ways autistic people cope with emotional trauma? Thank you so much for your time!
Hi! There’s a lot of questions here, so I’ll get to them in order.
Is giving some shark traits to an autistic character too dehumanizing?
I’d say in your case, given that
1- your character wasn’t born with these inhuman traits and
2- other characters in your story who are not autistic were given powers/inhuman traits,
you should be alright. To avoid the readers drawing the parallel autism=non-human, I’d say there are two main ways: making autistic characters who are human, or making non-autistic characters who are not human in the same way. Your story seems to fit in the second category.
What can I do better to avoid stereotypes in this situation?
I’d say the “the autistic child is magic and extremely powerful” thing is kind of a trope (well i mean the kid is not necessarily canonly autistic, but *weird* in ways that generaly make them autistic-coded, such as being nonverbal). This trope is usually used to show how scary that kid is (*gasps* what if they have a meltdown and destroy us all???). So I’d say that making your autistic character have powers is A-ok, especially if she’s not the only one, making her powerful is alright if it’s not too over the top, and what you should really avoid is making her scary because of her powers. She’s not a time bomb, she’s a small human. Really that’s the thing to keep in mind. Now that’s not to say controlling her powers has to be easy, but maybe don’t have her blowing up a city because people don’t need more voices telling them that autistic people are dangerous.
Otherwise, I really like the idea of a group of people with unique peculiarities finding a way to use them to help each other and support each other, it’s really nice :)
Are there representations of autistic characters as heroes you would prefer to see or haven’t seen before?
I’d say autistic people are rarely portrayed as heroes, at least in what representation I’m aware of. So basically you can do just about anything and it’ll feel novel :) That’s my opinion at least.
Do you think it’d be better to show her going to school or being homeschooled?
That’s one of the matters where it’s really up to you. Maybe try to think in terms of what would best fit your character rather than what would be better to represent, because I wouldn’t say it’s a very important issue. Some questions you can ask yourself : How would she deal with the sensory stimulations that come from a classroom setting? Would she have an easy time making friends or would she be bullied? Would she feel too isolated if she was homeschooled?
Are there specific autistic-child stereotypes I should avoid?
The first that comes to mind (and it unfortunately doesn’t come from bad media representation, but from real-life experiences) is “this child is such a burden and they’re making their caregivers’ life impossible and their caregivers are just so brave and really it’s such a tragedy that this kid is like that”. Of course, a young child has less coping skills and such than an adult, and they might have more trouble managing some of their traits, have a lot of meltdowns… Which is difficult for everyone to deal with, but please don’t portray her as a burden on her caregivers because of this, but rather as a child that they genuinely love and try to care for as best as they can :) (Or, if they don’t, which is absolutely possible, show that their attitude is toxic and that the reader shouldn’t approve of it and sympathize with them).
What things should the adults do so both she and the reader know they love her?
I’d say “the same things that with a neurotypical child” (I have a very vague idea of what this could entail because ??what do with small human ? The other day a friend gave me his baby to hold and I just spend that time focusing on not dropping it) plus showing acceptance for her autistic traits and trying to work with them rather than erase them, because they’re an integrant part of who she is. This can translate as not making her the food she has sensory issues with, letting her stim or even stimming with her, cutting the tags off her clothes if she has a problem with them, trying to make sure her living environment is sensory-friendly, giving her toys she can stim with, letting her follow her routines, telling her beforehand in case of disruption…
Are there common ways autistic people cope with emotional trauma?
I have no experience with this. One thing I think you can consider is that alexythymia (difficulty understanding and identifying one’s emotions) is common in autistic people, probably even more in children, and that the first part of coping with emotional trauma for your character will probably be “taking the time to realize that there is an emotional trauma”.
Then, some coping methods that neurotypicals usually don’t have could be stimming to deal with negative feelings, or immersing oneself in a special interest to focus on something else than the trauma.
If our autistic readers want to chime in and add ideas or alternative opinions to any of these questions, they’re as always very welcome.

FAVORITE MUSE ( S ) YOU’VE WRITTEN: My most favorite muse ever is The Outsider from the Dishonored series, though I’m also super attached to my Nick muse from Left 4 Dead 2. I’m kind of warring with myself on my stance on Wolf. I love writing for him and developing him but simultaneously he stresses me out a lot. I’m also growing more and more fond of Andross the more I use him. A long time ago I used to have a Gary Oak that I was very much attached to for sentimental reasons. He was my first RP muse ever and I deleted him in an emotional meltdown after an ugly break up. He was poorly developed, badly written and lost in terms of direction but I loved him.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE ON YOUR CURRENT MUSE ( THAT YOU ARE POSTING THIS ON ): Being able to enjoy my time with my best friend. I started writing for him on twitter, but fell out of him pretty quickly and left him to collect dust. It wasn’t until I turned my best friend onto the Star Fox series that my interest in Wolf resurfaced. By this time, I had already moved to tumblr as an RP platform because it was a little more accommodating to my preferred roleplay style. I could be remembering wrong, but I believe my BFF expressed interest in creating a roleplay blog for a Star Fox character and I immediately jumped on the opportunity to have a chance to interact with him using a muse I had already established. I set up a blog and my BFF was kind enough to design a theme and we’ve been going at it since. It’s been nearly four years now.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ASPECTS OF YOUR CURRENT MUSE:  It’s one of my most favorite and least favorite things about this muse: Wolf’s characterization; he’s incredibly complicated and his alignment is often difficult to gauge. His motivations definitely drive him. He has a very strong sense of justice that is very unique to his person. He’s not evil but he is capable of doing despicable things in the pursuit of his idea of justice. He’s not a hero but he definitely has a heart and is a very empathetic person. Wolf feels for the little guys, but he isn’t often seen helping little old ladies crossing the street. He’s a fun-loving goof, but he’s incredibly quick to anger and prefers to be taken seriously. Wolf is a huge mess of contradictions and it works for him a lot of the time because that’s how real life is. Real people aren’t programmed to respond the same way all the time. Sometimes they contradict themselves: sometimes you expect one thing out of them because of one opinion of theirs or one previous action they made and you end up being completely surprised. It’s one of my favorite things because it’s like sending secret messages; to those that aren’t paying close enough attention, Wolf appears to be a wildcard. But to those that follow him closely, his unpredictable nature begins to make more sense.............At least, that’s what my goal is. x)
WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION WHEN IT COMES TO WRITING: Music, bouncing ideas back and forth between my close friends (James, Tardy, Nep, King ilu <3), reading, my life experiences -- and for Wolf specifically, Fredryk Phox’s Star Fox-related content.
FAVORITE TYPES OF THREADS: AAAAAANGST! If not angst, then I’m totally into action. I love threads that are exciting. Being able to write action is like watching a baby exercise his little limbs, spread them out and see what he is capable of doing with them, y’know? It’s good practice for me too because I tend to fall into a literary pattern where I begin to loop with the same type of narrative structure over and over again. Action threads are very verb-oriented and because timing and sequences of events take on a bit more importance, it becomes harder to fall into the habit of typing “he did x while he does y; he does x as y happened”/
BIGGEST STRUGGLE IN REGARDS TO YOUR CURRENT MUSE: Everything. I don’t know what the fuck my problem is but I hold such a high standard for my Wolf (and all my muses, really) and it’s a huge fucking source stress for me because of it. I’m not referring to anyone here in particular but it’s common to for RPers to take Fox or Wolf--or any popular character of a well-known series, honestly--and write them as bare-bones as possible. These kinds of characterization are basic; it’s as though the people behind these versions of Fox or Wolf are building around a cliffnotes version of who these characters are. I see a lot of interpretations that appear as though the writer doesn’t have a strong understanding of the character they’re writing for and thus have been minimized and simplified into very easy-to-understand concepts. I personally find that to be disrespectful to the characters and I really try hard to not be lazy when it comes to my characterization. That said, my dedication to dynamic characters is a huge source of anxiety to me because I always am terrified that I’m working so hard on a character only to be missing the mark completely. My Wolf is a sort of hybrid of three popular characterizations: the dramatic performance we’re given in Star Fox 64/Zero, the powerful presence we unite with in Assault, and the charming, yet incredibly impacting clown that Fredryk Phox’s interpretation of Wolf is known as. I’m always afraid that I’m sloppily mish-mashing these three characterizations into one big unrecognizable blob, or that I’m doing an injustice to Wolf by portraying him far too much like a clown. Is he too goofy? Do people know to take him seriously? CAN they take him seriously? Is he not mean enough? Is he threatening? Is he angry enough? This choice of turning Wolf into a hybrid of three different ideas of who Wolf is often scares me because I’m attempting to appeal to many different people and when someone follows me for one side of Wolf and is subjected to another side of him, I always feel like I’m letting them down. I’m doing my best managing these three themes and deep down, I know they don’t match each other well.
