A Dhmis x Roomate!Reader Fix

(An: this is a sequel to another Dhmis roommate fic on my blog. Hope you guys enjoy, it's not my best work as I have a bit of a stomach ache rn. Enjoy!)

You slide out of your brightly colored bed, feet hitting the floor as you trudge over to your dresser. As you look in the mirror, you think about the past few weeks you've spent here. Despite the eccentric company, you've really grown to like the place. After dressing and brushing your hair you head out of the door. You immediately hear squabbling coming from the kitchen, and as you enter the room you see your three roommates engaged in some sort of debate. "I want tha' color cereal..." Yellow says, pointing to a coupon featured in the morning paper. "No! Rainbow Rocks are for babies, idiot. I want Morning Bran." Duck snatches his paper and points to a much blander looking image of an old man with a bowl of brown mush. You cringe internally at the picture. "I don't really like cereal. What about bagels?" Red asks, only to be met with a "BAGELS?!" from Duck.

"Morning, guys." You say, strolling over the table and plopping down in your designated chair. Initially, Duck had gotten into a spat with you over adding a chair to the table. "There's three of us, they don't get a seat yet! The floor is plenty comfortable..." You chuckle at the memory. "What are you guys arguing about?" Red sighs. "We just got the coupon book in today, tryna' make a grocery list." He explains, handing you the book. Flipping through the pages quickly, you see a few coupons that interest you. "So, were trying to figure out what were gonna eat for breakfast?" Red nods.

"Y/N, can we have tha' color cereal?" Yellow asks, leaning against your shoulder and pointing to the coupon. "What? Why are you asking them? This is my decision!" Duck exclaims. "No, it's not. The other one said we'd take a boat!" Yellow whines. "Vote. I said we'd take a vote." Red corrects. "I mean, I like-" You look closer at the coupon "Rainbow Rocks? Huh." You lean back in your seat, having put in your vote. "Alright, but can we get bagels next time?" Red asks as he begins to cut out the cereal coupon.

"Wha- You're just gonna let them make the choice?" Duck squawks, slamming his coffee cup down on the table. "Well, it's two to one, we're taking a vote, y'know?" Red responds. "No, we're taking a boat-" "ITS NOT CALLED A BOAT ITS VOTE!" You let out a small huff of laughter. Your tall, red roommate wanders off to check his account balance, (though you have no idea where the money comes from, you don't think any of them work). The grumpy little duck-man grumbles something about 'giving you too many rights' and disappears up the stairs to sulk in his room. This leaves just you and the odd 'little yellow fellow', as you so lovingly call him.

You grab an apple from the bowl on the counter and take a bite, while absentmindedly scrolling through your phone. You feel a pair of eyes on you, and look up to see yellow staring. "Do you need something?" You ask. "Did you make dat'?" He points to a small, braided thread around your wrist. "Hm, oh yeah. I braided it and put some beads on it." You hold out your wrist and let him get a closer look. "Do you braid other things?" You nod. "Yeah, sometimes I braid necklaces, or my hair." You explain. He looks at you, wide eyed and amazed. "Can you braid my hair?" He whispers with wonder. You laugh a little, finding his curiosity endearing. "Yeah, sure! We can head up to my room, I'll let you choose some beads if you want!" He gasps, and quickly races up the stairs to your room. You follow him up, and open the door to your bedroom.

You rifle around in your dresser, looking for your box of hair accessories. Meanwhile, Yellow wanders around your room, his hand reaching out to touch various things on your floor and bed. You flop down onto the edge of your mattress and pat the spot next to you, opening up your hair care box. Yellow hops up beside you, and looks at all the glittery clips in your box. "Can I have this one?" He holds up a bright pink butterfly, with glittery little antennas. "Of course, do you want any beads in your hair?"

Giggling and light conversation spills out into the hallway from your room, and enters the cracked door into Duck's room. "Ugh..." Duck groans, covering his head with a pillow. 'Can't they keep it down?' He thinks, before chucking the pillow away. The pillow doesn't even hit the ground before he's stomped out of his door, and down the hall to your room. He peeks in through the door and almost shouts, before he sees what's going on. Yellow is smiling and yammering on about an ad for chips he saw on TV. Normally, Duck would tell him to shut up, but he's far too distracted with you. Your gently braiding a small strand of Yellow's hair, nodding and occasionally responding to what he's saying. Duck doesn't understand why, but watching this sweet scene makes him feel sick. Watching all your attention go towards that stupid little yellow creature (who not to mention forgot the computer password), makes his eyes roll in disgust.

"What are you doing?" Duck says, slamming your door behind him. He folds his arms as he looks over the two of you. "I'm braiding Yellow's hair, he wanted to see how I did it." You explain, your eyes not leaving the blue strands of hair in front of you. "I'm pretty!" Yellow exclaims, tossing his hands up in the air. "It's stupid, you know? No one cares what your hair looks like..." Duck tries to take a dig at Yellow, but only gets a glare from you. "Leave him alone, he cares what his hair looks like," You turn back to Yellow, who looks back up at you. "And I think you look very nice." You say, rubbing his head softly. Yellow doesn't seem to know how to respond, only staring up at you with that same wide-eyed gaze from earlier. "Really?" He asks. You tilt your head, a little confused as to why he seems so shocked at a simple compliment.

"You do?" Duck asks, his smirk suddenly dropping. 'Yes, I do." You reply, sounding a little meaner than you meant too. "Well..." Duck stammers a little, unsure how to respond. "What about me?" He exclaims. "What about you?" You ask, turning to him with a confused look. "I'm pretty, I'm the prettiest one in the house! Have you seen my jackets!?!" Duck begins spiraling, and you can see if you don't say something, this won't stop. "I mean, I'm-" "You're very pretty too, Duck." You say. He stops, before shaking his head and coughing awkwardly. "I know, I just... needed to make sure you knew." You shake your head a little. Duck only stares at the floor and blushes slightly, before hurring out of the room. "Is he okay?" You ask Yellow, who just shrugs.

guess it's time to make a post about this because i realize i never actually did... so yeah ! uhm, ATCC was a... thing, and it's most likely the thing that many of my followers now remember me for (and if you're out of loop with it, ATCC or @ask-the-creative-crew was a DHMIS centered ask blog i made back in the year 2022), and it's been a hot minute since i've touched on it.

originally, i stopped posting because i was still in the school at the time and the blog was something i did on the side for fun. it only ever came to fruition because i wanted another place to show off my designs and headcanons other than instagram (RIP to the gram though). my intent for it then was just to be a silly thing that had no "heavy" storyline to it other than a bunch of little guys all hanging out together.

some time later, the TV show released and changed my perspective on a lot of the characters as well as the story (which i had begun to build whenever i was taking long breaks). fast forward 2 years and some emotional growth and artistic improvement - much of the story and character designs/personalities/relationships have evolved to fit the new narrative i've built. a lot of change has happened and will most likely keep happening as long as B&J keep producing the show and giving us new content to work with.

i mention all of this because a lot of what's on the blog (or what little of it was even there to begin with) doesn't exactly align with what i have now. i don't want to say it's dead forever and ever, but rather in an indefinite limbo while i try to figure out how i want to go about sharing the new story. i tend to be a little cryptic when sharing details about what it's like now because things are still susceptible to change, and also because i don't want to reveal the whole thing yet, but i really am more than happy to answer any questions you guys have about it (just don't always expect me to provide art if i answer. i'll give you rabies if you beg. rawr).

it does kind of hit a soft spot in my heart to know there are still people interested in my goofy little interpretations. thank you to everyone who's been supporting me after all these years, and for reading my ridiculously long explanation. have a cookie. 🍪

hey dude I found your blog today (not sure why it was recommended to me but here I am)

I dont personally identity with objectum or finding that sort of pleasure from objects, but as I'm exploring the tags im finding myself really curious and I want to understand more. I'm hoping you can answer some questions for me.

the objects you have an attachment to (in your case I think its a keyboard), do you think you're naturally drawn to these objects, or do you think there is a deeper connection with these particular items? Such as a personal history with said item?

Did you "choose them" or did they "choose you", ig?

Do you think its an aesthetic attraction to said objects, or is there something more they bring to you?

How do you and others determine pronouns for the objects?

When did you learn objectum was what you identified with?

I want to be clear this is coming from a place of curiosity and a wish for an understanding! I find myself drawn to certain objects myself (mainly things with physical buttons and screens, particularly handheld devices) but for me its strictly aesthetic and not romantic. my main object isn't a keyboard, it's an astrolite (made by hasbro in 1969), a "futuristic" toy that came with clear pegs that you could put in the holes on top and create a city (main draw). i feel like it's extremely obscure, there's barely any info online about it. the part of aster that i love is basically just a lamp, plug that sucker in (no on/off switch) and spin the wheel to make the pegs on top turn different colors. when i got aster it was just them, no pegs or information or anything. just a serial number on the back. finding that one ebay listing that told me everything i needed to know kinda solidified our relationship. it's definitely a deeper connection but lamps in general just kinda hit different.

i saw them in that store and it was true love at first sight but i'd like to say it goes both ways (has no idea how to explain this)

something about corners and shapes is what initially drew me in but they've been with me through everything ever since i got them. not trauma dumping on side but i've been through it.

i'm not sure how others do it but the way i do it is test pronouns with each object as i'm getting to know them. if it feels wrong i disengage with it, if they feel okay then i keep trying it out. i'm not 100% sure on what aster's pronouns are tbh; they mainly go by he/him but there are some occasions where he goes by they/them. including now.

it's kinda embarrassing to admit but that lamp in dhmis was what got me acting up about objects in the first place. thought it was just a character specific thing at first so i didn't think much of it. met/acquired aster and that completely flipped. i remember searching for stuff like "i love an object what is this called" and quickly came across the term. immediately applied that to myself.

also another thing, i actually have a few beloved objects (not as much as aster but they're pretty important to me): baby, my 2005 ford focus, and charlie, my gaming computer. ofc you probably know this already because i know i posted a list of them somewhere on this blog. but i've kinda been getting into nintendo consoles/controllers recently (corners and shapes <3)

Hi!! I've been looking for a comic by doodlepens called I think "puppet mafia" which is exactly what it says on the tin, it had characters like Spamton and the dhmis group etc doin mafia shit. I saw you mention them a few times with how much you liked another of their comics so I'd thought I'd ask.

Ik their blog doesnt exist anymore nor does SideArts_Szyslak which was another name i saw connected to the comic.

I was just wondering if you knew if they'd moved blogs or sumn cause I'd love to see more of their comic or if you knew how to find it or find them.

Well… here we are, I’m actually leaving

I just want to be clear, I love dhmis. The original series, and the pilot, will always have a special place in my heart. I’m still a fan, just not so much of a fan that I would spend like 75% of my life dedicated to a tumblr blog about it anymore.

Maybe it’s just burnout, or the fact that I was so disappointed in the tv series that it finally broke me, or the fact that I started this blog when I was 14 at the beginning of 2016.

I started running this blog when I was 14, and I’m 21 now. For nearly 7 years now. We had some good laughs, I met some people that would change my life, for better or worse. And I could have never imagined that I would gather so many people together like this.

And I really hate to sound ungrateful, but, it still kinda makes me a little sad when people say I’m the dhmis news guy, because this blog was always supposed to be more than that. It was supposed to be ALL of the dhmis fandom. All the art, all the memes, all the conversations. This blog was about you guys! The people who made this fandom even possible! The people who built it from nothing, for everyone now to enjoy. I loved sharing news, but I loved sharing your, and my, creations even more…

I guess being considered the “dhmis news guy” just kinda made me think that I was easily replaceable in the fandom, like… if one day I stopped, someone else would just fill the hole that I was in super easily and no one would really notice I was gone.

I think a lot of people forget that… I’m a person… Creative-Time IS a person… I was a person this whole time… making sure this blog didn’t turn to dust and constantly being ridiculed, mocked, or straight up harassed and sent death threats to the point were I would sometimes cry myself to sleep. But I realized that all that just wasn’t worth the energy, this wasn’t worth the energy.

There’s probably so much more I could say here… I just wouldn’t know where to start. And maybe I’m saying all this super wrong and someone is gonna look through it with a fine-tooth comb and tell everyone that I hate them and tell everyone I’m a horrible person, which perhaps I deserve.

I would like to thank all the people that have actually tried to get to know me, I’m sure you know who you are. You all made running this blog a little bit more happier for me, and I hope you all are happy too, even if we never cross paths again.

I think the only thing that could ever get me back into the fandom and this blog is if there is more dhmis that is actually good, or the pilot get released in HD in some shape or form. Other than that, I think I’m done here…

I won’t be deleting this blog, but I would request no new followers or dms unless it’s the pilot in full hd.

Hi, so i really love your comic and I also wanna make a dhmis related comic. But I am afraid since your comic was my inspiration it might look too similar to yours. Is that ok? I will try to make it original as possible but idk what to say if i fail (if i come to the realization that it is too similar then i will most likely cancel it and make another comic so)

I am literally writing DHMIS fanfiction, I have essentially hijacked three art students' passion project, I'd be a hypocrite if I got mad at people because their stuff was kind of similar to mine. I've seen several DHMIS ask blogs and comics whose creators said AIL was an inspiration. I'm completely fine with it, and often actively enjoy it! I did not make DHMIS, a majority of these guys are not my characters (even with my OCs, I'm fine with people using them). Make your comic, as long as it's not a straight up rip-off, whatever you do is probably fine.

That's a great question, let's go through some of the tags I use in this blog.

Also. This will be a bit long.

GENERAL TAGS

The most well known and used is ofc, #ryeblog ,which is given to any post I reblog. It comes from "rye" and "reblog". Another interesting fact is that when I reblog many posts in a short time, I call it a "ryeblitz" (ryeblog + blitz [German for lightning).

For original text-based posts of mine, the tag is #handful of grains, which comes from the fact that I am Rye; but also because originally there was a tag called #sack of grain that never got used and was intended for large text-based original posts.

Images and videos get #pics and flicks, except if these are art. If the art was posted by the artist it gets #art of them and if it's someone else's art it gets #art of those.

#letters to rye will be the tag used in this post, as it is for the asks I answer.

MEDIA TAGS

Quite self explanatory, if I'm reblogging some cute art from blorbo from my shows, tags would look like

Must be understood that this system isn't 100% reliable. If I don't have a tag for a media because I have no knowledge of it or even interest; it won't get a tagged or have a tag.

Imagine this, a fanart featuring characters from the shows A, B, C and D. I only have tags for B and C. Only appliable media tags are #B and #C.

This is why you can find stuff like few Chainsaw Man fanart in my blog, but a tag for Chainsaw Man doesn't actually exist. When I reblog Out of Touch Thursday, I don't do it with a tag for the Lucky Star anime. Characters don't have tags in my system.

TAGS THAT USE TOKI PONA WORDS

#pilin This Toki Pona word describes many concepts, like feelings, emotions, the heart in its both physical and emotional form. However, in this blog, this tag shall only be used for the heart (organ or not) and heart shapes and heart-shaped things.

#kili This word describes fruits and vegetables, all the edible parts of a plant. I also use this tag for stuff made with kili, like French fries, jam and jelly or milkshakes.

#mun This word doesn't just describe the Moon but also all night-sky objects and space objects. This tag replaced the now abandoned #astronomy as stuff like a blanket with sun and moon motifs or the fanart of a furry on the Moon aren't quite related with the science of space.

#kala This word describes fish and all the aquatic animals. Axolotls, whales, jellyfish and crabs may not be fish, but they sure are kala.

#pan As a Spanish speaker you probably have realised this word is for bread. That's right, it's for grains and all grain products. Stuff that is pan but not bread: tortilla, beer, peanut butter, crackers, communion wafers, tejuino. This tag isn't for pansexuality, Tumblr just colours it like that.

#pipi The word for insects and all the little bugs and crechurs, so it includes stuff like spiders and worms.

#waso The word for birds, flying animals and winged animals.

#soko The word for fungi. This tag replaced #mycology.

#akesi The word for reptiles. This tag isn't used for "non-cute animals" as the original meaning of the word expressed and was corrected in 2021.

#kijetesantakalu The word to describe procyonids and musteloids, like ferrets, racoons and tanukis. For the non-Toki Pona speakers. The reason why this word is long and very specific is because it's an April Fools joke that just got too popular.

#in front of them sensors I wears glasses, I like characters that wear them too. So this tag is for that. It also applies to stuff like sport/lab goggles, sunglasses and other eyewear.

#the florist's For flowers. The name is as in a flower shop, just like the butcher's or the chemist's.

#city made of light For photographs of, or art depicting urban light during the night. The night scared us, so we killed it; some beautiful examples of this massacre to our health are Times Square, the Las Vegas strip or Hong Kong neon capital of the East.

#KÖT For cats! The word "köt" isn't for cat in any language btw.

#i do the squeaking For ratas and mice. Tag name based on that one post with the mousegirl house wife.

I don't tag furries for some reasons: First is, what is a furry? Are Moomins furry? Are Sonic characters furries? Furries' opinion on what is furry and what is not a large broad spectrum of thoughts. Second is so people don't block furries from me. If you don't wanna see furries, go and try and see how many tags you need to block to see none, and you will still see some cuz not everyone tags. Also, furries don't get tagged any of the animal tags.

#boyfriendposting Those posts that are like "yeah, sorry that your boyfriend..."

#fake posts Those posts that are made to look like many and have some theme.

#fauxnetics People trying to spell pronunciation using non-standarized methods like the IPA, usually just causing more confusion. Example: "How do you pronounce Chara? Car-uh, Care-uh, Chair-uh or Char-uh?"

#illinois chess Games (doesn't have to be chess, but if chess, funky non-standard chess) [usually board games] with strange setting or rules, impossible to understand. Tag named after this thing from 20020.

#present as the past from the future Meme/joke posts describing modern/contemporany history or the current world as how we speak of the past. Example: "Cowboys were a sort of itinerant warrior class common in Meiji-era Texas."
