I know it's just rumors but if Marvel actually casts another Zionist to play their literal devil character Mephisto in the mcu. Then I want every single person to understand they never cared about Jewish rep, they never have, they never will. Casting Jewish Zionist actors to play Devils or Mossad agents instead of casting Jewish actors for actual Jewish roles that aren't thinly veiled propaganda roles, like Moon Knight. ....Sigh, we knew the MCU would find a way to whitewash Doctor Doom since they pretty allergic to Romani characters clearly, but still disappointing to see them actually do it. Like even if its a returning Tony Stark, it still says a-lot the MCU would rather bring Tony back then cast a Romani actor to play another take on Victor Von Doom.

Ok, so I’ve been thinking, in regards to this post, on non queer actors playing queer characters. And specifically, about non-trans actors playing any variation of identity under the trans umbrella. And you know what? I found, in some cases, it doesn’t really matter.

And so, here is my thought process:

There’s a difference between a character who wasn’t introduced as queer until later in the show. Does that mean their current actor should be replaced?

Also:

Isn’t the entire point of acting to act like another person? I personally believe that if the actor genuinely cares and educates themselves, they should be able to play said character.

I also had another thought: what about genderfluid characters? More specifically, genderfluid shapeshifters(no, not all shapeshifters are genderfluid. Pretty sure there’s a post somewhere about that too). Think about say, in the case of Loki. Loki, in the comics, is portrayed as genderfluid in the Agent of Asgard run and the newer run(which I can’t remember the name of for the life of me). Loki is shown to shift themself into whatever gender they’re feeling. Now, in the case of this actually being portrayed(we don’t talk about the series. Wtf was that. It didn’t even show anything but a flash of a paper with sex-fluid which is more about Loki being a shapeshifter) should the actor be genderfluid? After all, for about 2011-2013, we were given a positively fantastic portrayal of Loki by Tom Hiddleston. And for genderfluid shapeshifters, the usual consensus is that they would completely change their bodies to what is considered male or female at birth, so should Loki be played by cis actors or trans actors, or would it really matter? Also, as a genderfluid person, there is no monolith of being genderfluid. Some genderfluid people experience gender dysphoria. Some don’t. Some change their names when the shift genders. Others don’t. Some will change their clothing to match whatever gender they’re feeling. Some don’t. And another big thing: we don’t actually know for sure whether or not someone identifies as trans unless they tell you. Some people aren’t ready to come out of the closet yet. Some might not be ready for the backlash they may receive. But either way, you can’t really tell just by looking at someone whether or not they’re trans.

Now, that isn’t to say queer actors shouldn’t play queer characters, of course they should be allowed to. But they shouldn’t be limited to those roles. And that’s the problem, with writing and typecasting. If an actor is openly queer, directors and producers will consider them for a queer role. Fantastic! But it runs the risk of it delving into where they’re only considered for those roles. And then, there are producers/casting directors who will only cast queer actors, not based on talent, but on their sexuality or gender identity. This is the real problem. It’s not that queer actors should only play queer actors or cishet actors should never play queer roles, it’s that there should be a balance. There should be equal opportunities for all actors. But the fact is, there isn’t.
