I think Byler hits so different as a ship because of how damn unlikely the circumstances are and also because the stakes are so high. Like, in what universe do you fall in love with your best friend over the course of ten years? And in what universe can you expect that love to be reciprocated? To feel those feelings and that love about someone you know so deeply must be terrifying, as is the idea of them rejecting you, which would be devastating but also fully expected.

Add onto that the fact that they are both gay in a time where being gay was taboo and just not seen as a genuine option. Mike and Will are hopelessly, desperately in love with each other—with their own best friends—and they both believe that this friendship that is so important to them comes under threat because of the love. Like, both boys probably partially resent themselves for even putting their relationship at risk by daring to have feelings for each other.

It’s so damn unlikely to have a slowburn romance with your best friend over the course of a lifetime. It’s even more unlikely for your best friend to reciprocate your feelings. It is the most unlikely thing of all for your seemingly straight best friend to surprise you by revealing that they are gay too and that they’re in love with you. Like… can you even imagine how intense it will be for Mike and Will to realize all of this in the span of a few seconds? They’re both banking on rejection and that their love is an impossibility. But in one swift kiss or confession, the truth will come out and the weight on both of their shoulders will be lifted.

Also, I simply can’t imagine how intense it would be to know that your best friend who you’ve been in love with as long as you can remember is in love with you back. It’s almost too good, too fantastic to be true even for straight couples and even for people in real life. Like, the reality is that most of us can’t even fathom how intense a love like that would be. It’s truly a once in a lifetime, romance of the century kind of thing. Add onto that the fact that neither Mike nor Will knows that the other is gay let alone reciprocates. The moment they realize will be so intense that I’m all out of words to use to be able to describe it. It will be indescribable.

if they TRULY were building them up since s1... then why not wait to have Mike's "grand love confession" to El be towards the END of season 5???

And i find it pretty ironic how the Duffers are waiting till season 5 for Mike to find out about Will's true feelings. Because guess what?

That is meant to be the grand love confession.

Mike and Will confessing their feelings for each other is what the Duffers and us as a community have been waiting for.

Little does the GA know that byler has been the main ship since season 1.

Little do they know that they've been building up byler since the very beginning.

LITTLE DO THEY KNOW THAT WILL AND MIKE ARE LITERALLY THE FOCUS OF SEASON 5.

LITTLE DO THEY KNOW THAT OUR BOYS ARE GONNA BE THE ONES TO SAVE THE WORLD AND TIE EVERYTHING TOGETHER.

side note: this show is about forced conformity, freaks, and nerds, and it's about UPLIFTING them. Having the traumatized and abused gay character be used as a stepping stone for the white hetero couple would not represent that.

Having the (very obvious) most queer coded character in the show conform to society expectations would not represent that.

This poster is all the proof I need to know Byler is endgame bc like come on..

Let’s discuss the other ST4 posters, including the season 3 one.

First off we know when a character is looking at us, the audience. They are looking at Vecna/The Danger.

Will and El in season 3 are looking at the danger, as well as Max in the season 4 one. Mike is looking at El in 3 bc that was when he was supposedly in love with her in 3, we have Lucas doing the same thing Mike is doing with El but with Max. A simple parallel. Those are both canon couples.

If you combine these two posters it looks like Johnathan and Nancy are looking at eachother. A couple, the endgame couple. Also Will is lined up with Johnathan and so is Mike with Nancy. Both siblings.

Joyce and Hopper are looking at eachother. A couple. Endgame. And surprise surprise, who else are looking at each other?? MIKE AND WILL.

Do we see Dustin and Lucas look at eachother? Lucas and Mike? Will and Dustin?

Do we see El looking at Mike? Like ever? Ha. Nope.

El is always looking at the danger, never Mike, on ALL the posters. Endgame couples both look at each other (minus lumax, but I’m guessing they did that bc Max went into the coma, and we’re not supposed to know if she wakes up or lives or whatnot)

Hello old friends!! Been a lot time since I’ve made a byler post.

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I have byler doubt yall. I don’t have doubt in us, like I know our analyzing and theorizing and everything is correct and I know that byler makes logical sense. But I have doubt in the writers actually having the balls to do it. Like this is a show that spends a lot of time on their straight romances and love triangles, it’s marketed towards a general audience (most being straight people), and even though their writing sucks, m*leven is at the center of a lot of the marketing. I mean a gay romance plot twist in the last season does sound kinda crazy in hindsight (although I do understand the decision to make it subtle until the last season to ensure the show’s survival). I just don’t know if I can see two presumably straight(?) men willingly pissing off half their audience to make the gays kiss. Don’t get me wrong, I want it to happen. Like a lot. I’ve basically built my whole acc off of it. But idk. I’ve seen destiel and klance and every other queerbait ship and just can’t help but wonder if we’re falling into the same trap.

So anyway. Reply or reblog to help bring my confidence back. Or don’t, idk. Maybe it’ll be better to go in with lower expectations so I don’t have the entire show ruined for me, but believing is so fun yknow?
