summary: bets are fun, until they aren’t. you’re fine though. luke knows you’re an absolute badass.
warning: pushy male behaviour, suggestive comments, swearing, bets, threats, assault (physical), sexual harassment.
word count: 1.6k
(help i’m writing too many of these but this is the only other good one also feel free to leave requests yall i’m on summer break i have so much time and need something to do 🤩🤩)
(also i am still in love with luke castellan thank you very much I CAN FIX HIM PLSSSS)
(also very sorry to anyone named andrew it was the first name i thought of)
——————————————————
there wasn’t much that your siblings in the ares cabin liked more than winning capture the flag, but watching you tear down another boys’ ego was definitely one of those few things.
campfires were great for many reasons. singing, marshmallows, games—and bets. when chiron and mr d. turned in for the night early, something that rarely happened, the bets would come out. guys would try and talk to you, your siblings would intercept them, find out what they wanted, then place bets among themselves and with other campers as to how long it would take you to tear them down a few notches, or, on occasion, tear them a new one.
clarisse patted your shoulder as two of your brothers talked to another camper. “incoming.”
“details?” you picked at the chipped red polish of your fingernails.
“son of apollo. been here for about two months. andrew. something about wanting to go on a date with you and thinking you’re prettier than the aphrodite girls.” she rolled her eyes. “he tried it on with me before and doesn’t like taking no for an answer, so break his spirit completely. or, you know, his bones.”
you saluted her teasingly. “yes, ma’am. you can count on me, sergeant.”
she patted your shoulder again with a joking grin. “good on you, private. godspeed.”
with that, she left you sitting alone.
well, not really alone.
luke castellan had somehow ended up as your bodyguard in all of these cases. probably something to do with the fact that you’d been dating in secret for the last three months. you weren’t a huge fan of keeping your relationship a secret, but when you’d told clarisse, she told you that her and your other siblings wanted to keep making easy money, and betting on me was the best way to do that. since everyone thought you and luke hated each other anyway, it was easy enough to keep it up, but as your mocking remarks turned to teasing, then to flirting, it was getting more and more difficult. and as he was getting more attractive each day, it was getting harder not to kiss him in front of everyone at camp.
you swivelled in your seat to look up at him. he was sitting three rows back, almost hidden in the darkness, a distinctly put out look on his face.
“you hear that?” you asked with raised eyebrows and a grin on your face. “he thinks i’m prettier than the aphrodite girls. when have you ever said that?”
“i told you you’re prettier than a model one time and you punched me,” he said dryly. “and then i said you look like a goddess while fighting and you punched me again.”
“in my defence, i did hate you at the time.” you shrugged. “got my back?”
“always.” he said seriously.
you grinned and winked at him as you turned around, waiting for the newest idiot to come annoy you.
luke had, once upon a time, been one of those idiots in your mind. he irritated you to no end. he was better than you at sword fighting, so you bested him at everything else. he was more popular than you, so you became one of the most well-liked people at camp. all of your attempts to break him down, however, only made him fall in love with you. now, there you were, wishing you could be sitting beside him instead of waiting for some loser to come annoy you to death.
“y/n, hey.” andrew said, sitting next to you, probably a little too close.
you looked over at him. “andrew, right?”
he nodded, his smile widening as you knew his name.
you sat up straighter and scrutinised him, looking him up and down. “yeah, you look like an andrew.”
you heard luke hide a laugh in his cup behind you.
andrew’s face fell a little, but he regained it quickly. “heard you were one of the best fighters in camp.”
“i am.”
“that’s pretty cool. i mean, i can help you become the best if you want.”
“no, i think i’m okay.”
“come on, i mean, everyone needs to improve. even the self-proclaimed best. bet i’m better at archery than you at least.”
you looked over at his smirk and had to stop yourself from smirking too. this would be too easy. “no. thanks, though. i’m good on my own. one of the best, remember.”
“you could be better. we should have a little challenge. a game.”
“i only play games with people i like.”
“you could like me.” he leaned a little closer. you leaned away slightly. “i bet i could make you like me.”
you had to stop yourself from laughing. “yeah, i don’t think so, buddy.”
‘buddy’ was usually all it took to break a man’s ego. you’d used it on luke many times during unusually flirtatious sparring, back when you still pretended to hate his guts. it didn’t work on him anymore, but it usually worked perfectly on everyone else.
andrew didn’t falter. “i bet i could. give me a chance. let me take on a date. show you a good time.”
“no, thanks,” you said calmly. your siblings were watching intently. clarisse looked ready to step in if you needed it. you wondered what he’d said or done to her to put her on edge. then you realised it wasn’t what he’d done to her. it was what he was about to do to you.
his hand was on your thigh, gripping onto the bare skin by the hem of your shorts.
his hand was on your thigh.
gross.
you looked up at him, eyes sharp. you could hear luke shifting slightly behind you. “what are you doing?” you voice was deathly calm.
“showing you that i can show you a good time, princess.” his voice oozed honey—sickly sweet and sticky, like a fly trap. good thing you hated honey.
“how about i show you how many bones there are in the hand? by breaking every single one.” your voice was equally as saccharine sweet, but your eyes were glaring daggers into his and your jaw was set tight.
he just shifted his hand higher. you tried to push him off but he was strong. annoyingly strong.
he tutted. “come on, sweetheart. you’re gonna make a scene.”
you finally managed to peel his hand off your skin. “i’ll make a scene, alright. get off me and leave me alone. and while you’re at it, leave my sister alone too.”
he raised his hands, a sickening, sleazy smirk on his face. “i was just being nice, princess. you and your sister need to relax. you especially. i can help you relax.”
“oh, i’d love that. you know how i relax?” you tilted your head mockingly, eyes hard. “i punch my enemies in the face.”
he laughed. “you’re cute. now, come on. it’s not like you’ve got anything going for yourself. i mean, you’re hot, sure, but no guys ever gonna look at you when they realise how much of a bitch you are. not like i will.”
you rolled your eyes and stood up. it was time to go and sit by luke. it grated at you, but if he wouldn’t listen to you, maybe he’d listen to another guy.
he didn’t let you leave. his hand gripped your wrist and pulled you back to him as he stood up too. you were chest to chest with him. he towered over you, at least six inches taller. you stepped back, but he pulled you in by your waist and laughed.
“look at how good we look together,” he smirked. “i could show you—“
you punched him in the stomach. he doubled over, finally letting you go, so you kneed his diaphragm. he gasped for air as you stepped back. your friend chris rodriguez whistled appreciatively.
“touch me, or anyone here, ever again and i won’t just hurt you.” you hissed at him. “i’ll beat your ass, then i’ll drag you past the boundary and leave you for the monsters. got it?”
he nodded, still hunched over.
“good boy,” you grit out.
“fucking bitch,” he grunted.
your eyes darkened, but you didn’t do anything. your siblings were right behind him, all ready to drag him away. “good luck walking tomorrow, andrew.”
“good luck finding a guy stupid enough to fuck you,” he scorned.
you laughed. “hey, luke?”
“yeah, babe?” he stepped down beside you, his hand settling on your hip and pulling you gently into his side. andrew faltered at the sight. he probably hadn’t even realised luke was up there.
“are you stupid enough to fuck me?” you asked with raised eyebrows.
he looked like he was trying not to laugh. “oh, i’m way past stupid.”
you didn’t care about any of your sibling’s bets anymore. you didn’t care that people thought you hated each other. you especially didn’t care that everyone was watching. you kissed him. and in front of the whole camp, he kissed you back.
your siblings groaned in disappointment, knowing their betting days were over, but you didn’t care. you smiled the stupidest smile ever as you pulled away, feeling like you’d just had your first kiss all over again.
“what?” he asked quietly.
“nothing.” you shook your head. “just glad we don’t have to hide anymore.”
after months of kissing behind buildings, pretending to fight in public and avoiding each other so people wouldn’t find out, it felt honestly freeing to kiss him in the open.
he kissed you again as your siblings dragged andrew away. “and all it took was an asshole.”
“thanks for not stepping in,” you said. “i had it handled.”
“oh, i know you did. i was more than happy to watch you destroy his ego.”
“good, because if you had stepped in—“
“i’d be going home in an ambulance?” he smiled.
“no, you’d be going home in a hearse.”
“ah, my bad.”
as the campfire kept burning, you sat down with luke. your legs were pressed against his and his arm was around your waist. there wasn’t much that you liked more than tearing boy’s egos down, but being with luke castellan was definitely one of those few things.

The bird song- Luke Castellan x f!reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Warning(s)/notes: Betrayal, Bittersweet ending, alternating povs, blood, stabbing, manipulation, killing
Summary: Based off the song "The bird song" by Noah Floesch
A/N: Might have a broken wrist? Maybe? Anyways, got the inspo when listening to the song. NOT PROOF READ
She was a bird
I was an arrow
We've been friends for a bit, but gods, she's gorgeous. She's just beautiful. Everything good and pure. Everything I'm not.
Both of us sure we were
A sword and sparrow
We were ment for each other though. I just knew it. Despite how different we are, how good and kind she is and how bad and cruel I am, we were destined to be together. Fates tangled together.
Still when we flew
We never knew
Months with by. The more time I spent with her, the more I felt awful for what I was doing. But despite that, I always loved her. No matter what.
There in the air
I felt her feathers
The time was approaching. I tried to stay with her. To always be there for her. But he made me. He pulled me away and forced me away. Leaving her. Alone. It was for the greater good. It'll all be worth it in the end.
First all at once
Then all together
Control. I was losing control. All of it. As I got corrupted I forgot some of my past. All I remember is... a girl? Doesn't matter though. Only the army and the destruction of the gods matter.
When I went through
That's when I knew
"Prove your alidgence." He commanded.
"How, my lord?" I respond, wondering how I could possibly prove my dedication any more than I have. I see him smirk.
"See this girl? Kill her." He commands, as two guards bring out a girl- her. The girl from my memories. The girl's eyes light up in both fear and something else. "L-Luke..?" She says weakly.
"How do you know my name?" I demand as I stand taller and look down upon her.
"Luke... y-you don't remember me..?" She asks, sadness filling her gaze.
"Even if I did, you have no right to call me by my name." I say sternly as look at her more closely, noticing the scar that ran along her lip. Something about it was familiar.
"Kill her." He demands, handing me Backbitter. I nod and walk towards her, gripping the sword tight. She looked horrified. Her eyes wide, body shaking violently.
"L-Luke please..." She pleaded, trembling as she trys to escape the tight grip of the guards. "Please..." She pleads quietly as I pull my sword back and-
I'm a killer
And a killer is a bad, bad thing to be
-stab.
She let's out a strangled gasp as she stared up at me, tears falling down her face. I retract the blade from her. Another gasp escaped her lips.
"I-I'll always... l-love you L-Luke..." She says softly as her body falls to the ground, blood going everywhere.
She's a giver
And a giver's even worse to folks like me
Then it hit me. All my memories flooding back. I stare at her body of the floor as she struggles to breathe. I fall to my knees and whisper "No... no, no, no.... god no... please..." I say as I grab her dying body and hold it in my arms. "Y/N.... Y/N please... please don't leave me... I cant live without you... I'm so sorry..." I say as I start crying.
'Cause I never really wanna be the one to hurt somebody
But it just keeps happening, yeah it just keeps happening
Her body lay lifeless in my arms. I shake her "Y/N?" Nothing. "Y/N?!" I say again, louder. I yell in anguish as I hold her lifeless corps in my arms, tight to my chest. "I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..."
I was a bird
He was an arrow
My best friend. My love. My purpose. Funny how we're only friends and that's how I feel. He's just so perfect. His perfect looking lips and smooth blonde hair. He's perfect. Popular, kind, sweet. Everything I could ever want.
I was allured
By the straight and the narrow
His kindness and love was undeniable. He was all I ever wanted. It's like we were meant for each other. Ying to my Yang. Black to my white. Evil to my Good.
What could I do?
His aim was true
Then he was gone. Without a word. He left and took my heart with him.
Years alone, hoping for his safe return.
After 2 years it seemed hopeless. Until he was there.
"L-Luke...?" I say, my voice wavering.
He glared at me, standing taller and straighter. "How do you know my name?"
My heart hurt at his words. "Luke... y-you don't remember me...?"
"Even if I did, you have no right to call me by my name." He says in a harsh tone as he stares at me, his eyes studying my face. The man behind him orders something and hands him a sword. My body tenses as he approaches me with it. My eyes go wide as u start shaking violently, unable to move.
"L-Luke please..." I plead as my body trembles, struggling against the guards holding me. "Please..." I plead as I look up at him. He retracts the blade and-
Straight to the heart
I let it happen
-stab.
I let out a gasp as he stabs me in the gut. Tears well up in my eyes as I look up at him. He retracts the blade and stares at me.
"I-I'll always... l-love you L-Luke..." I say quietly with a soft smile as I fall to the ground, crimson blood going all over the ground.
I couldn't hardly
Have ever imagined that
He falls to his knees in front of me. "No... no, no, no.... god no... please..." He says as he grabs me and holds me in his arms. "Y/N.... Y/N please... please don't leave me... I cant live without you... I'm so sorry..."
When he went through me
He'd hate what he's doing
Then he cries. I smile up at him and let out a rugged exhale, vision blurring as I lose consciousness.
And make me feel stupid
For choosing him too
Then I was at the entrance of Elysium. Alone. There was a throbbing pain in my chest. In my heart.
'Cause I'm a giver and a giver is a bad, bad thing to be
He's a killer and a killers even worse for folks like me
But I loved him.
But he killed me.
But I'll still love him. I always will. He was my purpose. And I know I was his.
'Cause I never really wanna feel the hurt from anybody
But it just keeps happening, yeah it just keeps happening
But here in Elysium, the moment plays over and over. His crying face as he holds me. I'll never forget that.
Yeah it just keeps happening
Never
Falling
Never to fly again
1 years....
Darling
Together when everything's
2 years....
Fading
The shade of the trees in the dark
3 years....
I'm in
Love with the idea of
"Ethan. Me. All the unclaimed. Don't let it... don't let it happen again..."
Dying
With you in my arms but not
I saw her face. It's been far to long. As I end the awful reign of Kronos I see her. I was finally going to see her.
Like this
We can't really help who we are
To got back and see her.
We can't really help who we are
We can't really help who we are
I wake up at the entrance to Elysium
Damned to the end from the start
We can't really help who we are
A figure appears a few feet away.
We can't really help who we are
We can't really help who we are
"What took you so long?" I hear the familiar sound say.
Damned to the end from the start
We can't really help who we are
The sound of her. Of Y/N.
We can't really help who we are
We can't really help who we are
I run to her and hug her tight.
Damned to the end from the start
We can't really help who we are
"I'm so sorry..."
We can't really help who we are
"It's okay... I forgive you... always and forever...."

PJO TV Thoughts
S1,E6
(There will be book mentions/spoilers)
Can’t lie to y’all im on my second week of this semester and already just so eepy
Okay the first line does tell you exactly what’s happening in this dream but I was so confused by it being Percy’s headmaster from Yancy
Anyway omg I swear you can see Luke in the reflection like it’s gonna be so obvious it’s not Clarisse on rewatches
WE GOT “Little Hero”
Cracker Barrel! What o would give to eat at a Restaurant rn
A SECOND SEAWEED BRAIN HAS HIT THE PERCABETH TOWERS
(I am aware others have made that joke)
Omg hi Luke
Good not being sus Luke
ARREST HER?!?! Percy wtf
Luke I’m positive you would know what Ares is like
OOP if Luke picks up on it IMMEDIATELY…
The episode is titled “A Zebra Takes Us To Vegas” AND WE INLY GET A SECOND OF A ZEBRA ON SCREEN?!?!
Anybody else see the Geia fashion billboard or just me
Way to be obvious about it
“I had a premonition that we fell into a rhythm/where the music don’t stop for life” I think that Levitating was chosen WITH INTENTION for these lyrics only
ODYSSEY MENTION
Graphic novels do count
ODYSSEUS MENTION
Oh besties… the lotus eaters have upgraded darlings
WISE GIRL WISE GIRL WEE WOO WEE WOO IT’S HAPPENING EVERYONE STAY CALM
The fact that they haven’t shown Grover eating garbage yet… cowards. COWARDS.
I do think that them knowing takes tension out of it but they think that it’s okay unless they eat something
CASTELLAN LORE ALREADY
A Saytr?? I’m saying that TV screen image is a sun so APOLLO MENTION
A gay satyr?!!! The subtext
Oh? I’m compelled certainly what kind of magic does the Lotus have to convince satyrs Pan is there
DREAM TALK
Like you can see extras wearing dated clothes but it’s just not the same
Also I’m waiting for others to find the di Angelos, I know I’m not gonna be able to find anything
(If they cut it out I will lose it)
Are the employees also under the spell? I would have to assume so
Uh oh Grover is forgetting
HE’S HERE
The way his face fell… I’m afraid LMM is eating as Hermes
BTW I saw someone say LMM was a bad choice as Hermes because canonically Hermes has the most children and they don’t think LMM is sexy enough for that… girlie do you not remember what happened when Hamilton came out be SO FOR REAL
At first I thought I wouldn’t be able to seperate actor from character but he’s doing such a good job that’s Hermes I’m sorry (no I’m not)
ORPHEUS MENTION (I’ve helped others [get into the Underworld] before)
Are the fields Italy? Once again folks I’m not gonna be able to find it so I’m reaching out to
Someone looks back I’m guessing
Oh babey the lore the tension
HEY WHAT WAS THAT
My guess is something to do with Gabe or as one brilliant Twitter user said, Percy’s first time at boarding school
YEAH ANNABETH MOVE BABY YOU DON’T DESERVE THAT
(Also how the fuck can Hermes do that)
Sure buddy see you next season
“This was all just a waste of time. We don’t have time to waste.” Oh Annabeth I’m so sorry for what you’re about to learn
I love all the helmets and stuff really lets you know what’s going on
Oh noooooo oh boy oh buddy oh wow that hurt
Sorry he’s making Hermes feel so empathetic which is exactly how he is in the books. He’s good!
OOP
Were those the di Angelos? They were brunette and small (still reaching)
Oh so that’s why they mentioned days earlier I see
HIS KEYS?
Are George and Martha on there are they wondering what’s happening
CENTRAL AIR BABEY
Oh no Percy’s forgetting too
Just rip him out and leave besties
Oh geez they’re never leaving at this rate
Damn there’s that fatal flaw again Percy
RIP Grover playing a human hunter game I will never forget you
Annabeth it was good it really was but you’re right. He is the god of thieves.
Oh boy now we know why they let him drive though
Me when I first started learning how to drive standard
Just in case you forgot Percy is a New Yorker
Oh NO bestie got distracted looking at the princess (his words not mine though I agree) next to him
NO DON’T TURN OFF THE LIGHT I WON’T BE ABLE TO SEE ANYTHING
What did I just say. What is happening on screen
Oh boyyyyyy
He’s just three apples tall
Oh it’s so much worse underwater
SEAWEED HAIR
Wait… were AFTER the summer solstice? WHY
Exactly Percy you gotta finish it
YEEAHHHHHHH
Four?!?! What about ‘you will fail to save what matters most in the end?’ He better lose one I stg
Next ep trailer
Okay so who’s eye is in the credits what do we think
Crusty’s!
Desert and terrible forest?
Okay yeah he definitely loses one or uses one to trick someone or something he said said “you guys leave with my mom”
Oh wait what if he uses it on Crusty… Disney let Percy actually be violent
SWORD FIGHT NEXT EP? At least the beginning
HOLD FAST MOM OHHHHHHHHH OUCH
Tumblr media
BONUS: Hermes in cat form

Goddammit im so hapoy to have found you, a Luke apologist. I jaut got sucked back into the whole fandom bc of the upcoming series and... i read the original books when i was really young, right, 11,12,13. And yea, Luke was the bad guy!!
But now im actually Luke age. And i know how young everyone actually is. If you put me in charge of a bunch of 12-15 year olds and made me watch them die one after the other; i'd probably side with the side that's AGAINST those making this happen too???
Idk his stance is just so so so understandable. I'm studying to become a teacher rn and being responsible for big groups of young kids - it feels a certain way. It's like... motherly instincts, but not really, but kinda, but definetly extreme protectiveness.
Now did he make some bad choices along the way blablabla, sure yea. But holy hell his position is understandable.
ESPECIALLY! Knowing about New Rome and that alternatives are a possibility, actually, the greeks just aren't getting them??? Nah i'd definetly try and murder all the gods. Viciously.
I don't really know where i'm going with this except that i was scrolling through the Luke tag and one of your posts was like a breath of fresh air in between all the, mostly pretty young, fans that hate on him and everything he every did. So thanks, i guess?
Goddamn, I somehow never got an email for this, so I had no idea this was collecting dust in my inbox. Sorry about that.
Also, you left me rambling, so. . .sorry about that.
And yes. I am more or less the same age Luke was during the series, and I can't imagine the number it would do on you to be responsible for prepping a bunch of preteens and teenagers to face their violent deaths, especially after what he went through with his mother and Thalia.
I left it in the tags of the post that went viral against my will, but Luke's living out a different genre from Percy and company, and I—I would lose my shit, too, if in his position. That's torturous, dystopian shit.
They're kids, damn it.
(And I have. . .many headcanons about Luke Castellan and Camp Jupiter and Greek demigod life expectancies. Most of them not good, all of them trying to square the worldbuilding)
And I find it so difficult to believe that it's a bad person—and not simply a very angry and hurt person—who sets out to do really questionable things to try and keep another kids from suffering and dying, to prevent anyone else from becoming himself.
There's a certain despair through it and Luke's choices; I really, really have my doubts over whether Luke genuinely believed that he would survive the war, either way.
Raging against the dying of the light and all that. He knows he will likely fail, he knows he's propping up a monster, and he's doing it anyway in this desperate attempt to create something different.
This makes Percy so important because he still thinks that as family and as people, the gods can change—just look at his conversation with Hermes at the end of TLO.
There's a faith he very understandably keeps (Poseidon is, by godly standards, a good dad who tries and that's important), a faith that Luke, in turn, has understandably lost and we see Hermes's grief and regret over that loss.
Luke's last change in heart, his choice to believe in Percy, in how to break this cycle of violence and abuse that's been eating demigods alive, is beautiful and kills me every time.
(Requisite note that this final choice takes on a different timbre considering the events of HoO)
He's lost everything—his mother, Thalia, Annabeth, any semblance of a home he ever had. Which is how I think he justifies Kronos, ultimately, I think. He's lost any hope he has, for himself or otherwise, and is intent on making the gods pay for what they've done.
Like every other tragic hero, he penned his own tragedy, knowing what was going to happen the whole time, which kills me.
He walks into his own end and, at the end, finds that last thing at the bottom of Pandora's jar—Hope.

In short: Nico gets therapy from Dionysus. In this Bonus chapter, The session is cancelled, due to the loss of Dakota. Also on AO3 and FanFiction.net, and in Tumblr tags like Nico di Angelo, Dionysus, this might be crazy etc.
This Might Be Crazy: Bonus chapter: Old Kool-aid
Supposedly I had therapy today, yet I knew I shouldn’t be surprised if it was cancelled at the last minute. Dionysus wasn’t sitting on the porch of the Big House. When I went inside, there was no-one there, either.
‘Dionysus?’
Upstairs, someone was walking around. A few seconds later, Dionysus came down the stairs. He was as white as a sheet and generally looked like he hadn’t slept well the last couple of days. ‘Nico…’
I took a deep breath. ‘Eh… I think… we won't be doing therapy today. I just wanted to... eh, I’ll leave.’
He leaned onto a chair, slowly shaking his head. ‘Is there something particularly bothering you?’
‘No, I think.’
He tried to smile and failed miserably. ‘It’s okay that you came to check if you really didn’t have to come.’
I slowly nodded. ‘I…’ I wanted to say something, anything, but I didn’t really know what. ‘I… met Dakota a few times.’ I didn’t look him in the eye. ‘I travelled between camp Jupiter and such. The fifth cohort wasn’t exactly the best, but he and Gwendolyn did try to make the most of it.’ I wondered how Gwendolyn was doing right now. Anyway: ‘And well, that seemed to have worked out. Eventually, the cohort delivered a few generals, and now…’ I shrugged, feeling stupid that I was telling all this. ‘I think everyone is missing him.’
Dionysus looked at me. ‘Thanks, Nico. It’s not… I…’ He sighed. ‘The thing is, Dakota isn’t my kid, but at the same time he is. I feel sad, but that can’t be just me.’
‘So... bachus, too?’
He winced and nodded. ‘He was a good kid, Dakota.’
‘Yes.’
‘Like you said.’
That sounded a little like normal Dionysus. ‘Well… yes.’ I took a deep breath. ‘We’ll miss him. All of us.’ I said that already. ‘I’ll… see you next time.’
He nodded. I inched backwards and stepped out of the big house.
The sun was shining outside. I wondered whether they saw it in Camp Jupiter, too. And if Lester did so. It felt like we would be seeing him again, soon. Once again there was little time to think about our losses.
A/N: Why is Kool-aid both a theme for Dakota and May Castellan. Like why (May makes Kool-aid all day for Luke, it says in The Last Olympian. I am pretty sure people expected a Dakota chapter when I first uploaded ‘Red Kool-aid’ and ‘Purple Kool-aid.’

“She’ll never claim me,” he whispered. Silena shook her head, eyes wild as she looked around for anyone who could be watching.
“My mother doesn’t remember half of her children as it is,” she said with a note of bitterness. “If you do something to impress her, it won’t matter. Return the bolt in her name. She’ll claim you if you act the part. If you stay unclaimed then they'll figure out what you really are," she said, squeezing his hands tightly. Percy's heart sped up.
"I - I don't know the first thing about Aphrodite-"
"My mother was born of sea foam," Silena cut him off. "And if you're really who I think you are... you are the sea. You can pull this off," she said and touched his cheek. "Get the bolt. Survive," she said. Percy swallowed.
"What if I can't act the part?" He asked. Silena's expression went blank for a moment. Slowly, she slipped off her bracelet and placed it in his hands.
"If you're going to be one of us... you better learn."
Or
AU where Percy has to hide the fact he's a Big Three kid otherwise he'll be killed on the spot. Unfortunately for him, unclaimed kids tend to raise the most suspicion... but he might have found a loophole in the form Aphrodite.

Congratulations on the milestone!
🔥 Preferably Merlin, Percy Jackson or Harry Potter
I am a straight girl, a slytherin. I enjoy debating and literature. My zodiac sign is Aquarius. And I most definitely cannot talk about myself in a natural way. I am very opinionated and don't really enjoy fluff (like cute names and all that vanilla acting) though I like romantic actions. I like conflicted characters who are not particularly heroes as well as characters that don't open up straight away.
I am really curious about who you will pair me up with :^)
Congratulations again on the milestone, keep it up 😌😊
alright, just a disclaimer that it’s been a while since i’ve read percy jackson, so i’ll do my best, but my memory of the characters might be a little spotty.
Merlin:
I ship you with Elyan!
alright, so we all know that elyan is the ~mysterious~ knight, and that energy is perfect for you. you have to be at level 100 before he gives you his backstory, and you get to have a lot of fun theorizing about it, and slowly chipping away at his rough exterior. elyan is like, the definition of mysterious with a heart of gold and that’s honestly very iconic of him.
also, elyan would love that you are opinionated and have ambitions of your own - his sister is gwen, after all, so he’s very used to having lengthy debates. he would love to talk with you and have debates - you aren’t afraid to speak your mind, and he loves that about you.
the two of you probably talk a lot at the banquets and festivities that arthur throws as king - elyan finds them enjoyable for the first few moments, but he’s an introvert and needs time alone. the two of you manage to sneak off or at the very least find a quiet area, and you just talk - about anything and everything.
neither of you like to talk about yourselves very much. elyan is modest and he likes to keep up some mystery, and you struggle with talking about yourselves, so you often avoid topics about yourselves.
i imagine that, at some point, elyan asks you about yourself, and you tell him you’re not very good at talking about yourself, and so he says he’ll speak for you, then. and he lists off all of the qualities about you that he loves, and all of the little things he’s noticed, and he’s really spot on. he asks you how he did, and you compliment him and then proceed to tell him all of the things about himself that you have uncovered, and his smile - sort of proud and intrigued - is seared into your memory forever.
anyway, i think the two of you would make a fine couple - you’re both unique and independent, and yet elyan is incredibly loyal and would die for you.
furthermore, elyan, too, is not someone who is super big on excess fluff in a relationship. he’s a more private person, so his acts of love are kept for when the two of you are alone - not when all of camelot is looking. (though he does quite like stolen kisses in the corridors.)
i think that there would be a lot of deep understanding in your relationship, and so when elyan finally opens up to you (it’s after a long while, but when he’s ready, he does), he tells you all about his travels. you are one of the few to actually know all that happened to him in those years when he was alone, and when the other knights find out that you know, they beg you to tell them - percival likes to make guesses and you will either confirm or deny them.
(of course, you’ve confirmed complete lies, and percival has probably realized at this point that elyan did not fight off an entire village that outcasted him, creating a ghost town in his wake, but percival can never be sure which of your confirmed stories are real, and which ones are fake...)
Percy Jackson:
I ship you with Luke Castellan!
first of all, before luke joined kronos, he was actually a well-respected boy. like, camp members loved him - he was kind and had a witty personality, and he cared about the camp members, so he had a lot of loyalty to them. i can see all of this lining up with your personality really nicely.
i think luke would have really loved you! your opinions, your inventive way of thinking, your individuality, and your inexplicable luck? luke finds you fascinating - both kind but honest, both a dreamer but grounded in reality. you are his favorite person to be around, and he loves just watching you in your element.
idk if you are more of a sword fighter, knife fighter, or an archer (or whatever else have you - magic? necromancy perhaps?) but luke likes to watch you in action - you have such a determinedness to you, and you’re extremely clever, so watching you in battle is always fun. you outsmart your opponent and are fierce while doing so.
he also loves to relax with you while you’re reading - you thoroughly immerse yourself in novels, and he likes to watch the expressions cross your face - happiness and sorrow, confusion and excitement, he thinks it’s cute.
your introverted side mixed with his extroverted tendencies would be an interesting mixture - but i feel like luke enjoys his downtime and it wouldn’t be too much of a strain on your relationship.
i so think, though, that luke holds a lot of his cards close to his chest, and he doesn’t open up because he knows he has a lot to hide, and with you... it would be opening the floodgates. you definitely know this, and you want to know what he’s hiding. it’s a source of frustration for the both of you, and working through that is difficult.
Harry Potter:
I ship you with Sirius Black!
now, this was not my first thought, seeing as sirius kind of has it out for slytherin’s in general, but i can actually see this really working, so stick with me
i want to say that you and sirius were childhood acquaintances - maybe you’re from another pureblood family that’s always been in slytherin, and so your families often talk and bring their children along. you and sirius were encouraged to play with one another, and i imagine the two of you didn’t always get along
sirius is outgoing while you are reserved. both of you are a little arrogant (you mostly when it comes to your intellect). neither of you would back away from a fight, and generally you have a lot of tension together. with sirius, your strong opinions become scathing remarks, and your debates become arguments. he just knows how to infuriate you.
and yet, the two of you also seem to gravitate toward each other - in every room, you manage to find sirius and he manages to spot you. it’s irritating.
i imagine that before you head off to hogwarts, your families meet up one last time, and you’re talking about hogwarts, and for once, you aren’t arguing. it’s rare that the two of you share these moments, but it happens every once in a while, and it’s happening again.
neither of you want to be in slytherin (and sirius coaxes this out of you with great difficulty) - you want to be a ravenclaw and he a gryffindor. you’re independent and witty and definitely clever - you could be in ravenclaw, but you also don’t want to betray your family. sirius says that if you end up in ravenclaw, the two of you can be social outcasts together - of course, you’d have to keep your bragging down to a minimum, and your debates, too. they can be awfully annoying. and you tell him alright - but he’d have to keep his pride in check, and that reckless abandon that gets him so often into trouble.
and then you get sorted. and he is in gryffindor. but you’re in slytherin. and part of you mourns just a bit for the connection the two of you could have had - the daring escape from your life that almost was.
and in your house, you’re wonderfully clever, but also introverted and independent, so you often go overlooked (as so many aquarius slytherins do). you often get spared by the pranks that the marauders do just because you hang back from the group, but you get in the thick of some of them, sometimes, and it’s easy to get frustrated at sirius all over again.
at holidays, when sirius returns home, you criticize sirius for his pranks, but the two of you don’t spend as much time together, anymore, and when you do, it’s mostly spent in silence - both of you reading books and avoiding the others gaze. it’s no longer a comfortable rivalry between the two of you - it’s awkward and tense.
i imagine that in your fifth year, the two of you end up being partners in some class or another - potions, maybe, or divination or something. at first, the two of you didn’t talk much, but one day sirius asks about regulus, and that opens up communication again.
and then it’s back to your frustrated debates (now done in whispers, so the teachers don’t hear) and sirius’ cheeky teasing. and occasionally, on days when both of you are sobered or maybe just tired, you have those soft conversations again. and neither of you are great at opening up, but both of you are feeling a little lost and maybe a little trapped, and your friendship grows over the course of the year.
neither of you talk in the halls very much, but he’ll slide into the chair across from you in the library, or he’ll catch you on your way out of the great hall, and slowly, a romance starts between the two of you.
of course, if word got out that you were having romantic feelings for sirius black - blasted off of his family’s tree sirius black - you would be in deep trouble with your family, so the two of you keep it a secret.
it’s rough going, but both of you promise that after school gets out, you will run away together.
of course, fantasys can only live too long, and at some point in your seventh year, your parents want to make you a full on death eater.
i imagine that you are independent, driven, and steadfast in your beliefs enough to run away - you go into hiding from your family and leave hogwarts without graduating, only giving a cryptic message about where you are to sirius, asking him to go and find you when it’s safe.
now, this ending could go a couple different ways - sirius goes to you right after school and you join the order of the phoenix with him, it’s not safe so he has to wait a while and he goes to you after lily and james die (with baby harry ofc because he’s his godfather), or, he only ever makes it back to you after he’s been in azkaban for forever, or, even worse, he never makes it back to you.
oof. that’s rough, buddy.

Broken Pieces Masterlist
<><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Pain flooded my senses. The weapon impaled my gut, right below my heart. It took all of my remaining strength to look at the man I once considered my brother and choke out, "Gods damn it. Fight." And that's when numbness took over my body and the darkness flooded my eyesight.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><>
I woke with a start, my breathing was labored. It was dark, but not pitch black like my dream. I sat up and scanned my surroundings. Dozens of demigods were packed in the little Hermes cabin. Mostly undetermined stayed here. I grabbed my dagger and slipped out of the cabin. It was about three hours until breakfast so I walked to the tree on the hill. Even though bloodshed and horrors have seen this camp, it had an amazing view. I dont know how long I sat there, it could have been hours, it could have been a couple of minutes. But after awhile I heard footsteps approaching me. I turned my head to be greeted by Connor Stoll. He has a lopsided smile plastered onto his tan face. He wordlessly sat down next to me. We sat in comfortable silence, until he broke it, saying,
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing."
"And I'm the queen of England."
"Yep, I know you are."
"Phoebe..."
I sighed and closed my eyes.
"How'd you know somethings wrong?" I asked.
"You're wearing your baby blanket."
I looked down, sure enough, it was wrapped around my shoulders. When did I do that?
"The only time you wear it is when you're upset, so please, tell me whats w-"
"I had the dream again." I said. He looked up.
"The one where you.... You know.."
"Yeah..."
"Did you see who stabbed you?"
"No." That was a lie.
"Well, are you okay?"
"Yeah." Another lie.
He looked at me with worry plastered on his face. He saw right through my facade. Just like he always did. But instead of saying anything he just engulfed me in a hug. I clung to his shirt like my life depended on it. Tears threatened to break through but I shoved the feeling down. We stayed like that until breakfast. That's when we got up and walked to the dining pavilion.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><>
When Breakfast was over we all went to do our daily training. Everything was normal. No one trying to kill me, no one trying to kill each other, all was going great. The Hermes cabin was currently sparring. I was paired up with Luke Castellan, my cabin leader. We were even for the most part, both getting in hits every once in awhile. But eventually I disarmed him and took the victory.
"You did good, but not as good as me, Luke." I said as I helped him up.
"I wish I could slap that smirk off of your face right now." He grumbled.
"You still love me though." I said with a wink. He blushed and said something incoherent.
"You gotta speak up pretty boy." He mumbled something again.
"I said, you wish." He finally said at a normal volume.
I mocked offense and put a hand on my chest.
"How dare you! I am loved by everyone and almost everything!" I said with the utmost confidence.
"I have to disagree with that!" I heard Connor yell while he was sparring against Travis.
"I could whip your ass too." I yelled at him.
"Kinky!" He slyly smirked.
"Connor! There are children!"
"Says the chick who said ass.''
"Whatever"
When I turned around, I was met with Luke red in the face from laughing.
"Shut up."
"I never said anything."
He raised his sword toward me and said, "I declare a rematch."
"Sure your knighthood." I said with a bow. And we went at it again.
  <><><><><><><><><><><><><>
It was late at night, a storm raged around camp.
"Who the hell ticked off the drama queen?" Thunder boomed louder, I decided to stop before Zeus incinerated me. I was just outside the border getting soaked in the rain when I turned around and saw a horrific sight. A child was fighting a giant bull while someone else was knocked out cold. When did they get here? How could I be so blind? The wind and rain was deafening, but I ran and tried to make my way over there. But before I could help, the little kid stabbed the Minotaur and it evaporated. The kid nearly passed out so I ran to grab them before they hurt themselves even more.
"Just hold on kid." I said. They looked confused but let me carry them passed the border.
"Grover..." The kid said. I was confused, Grover? Then it clicked, this is the kid that Chiron was watching at Yancy. I turned around and saw Grover covered in mud. I picked him up and carried them both to the border. I saw Chiron and Annie come with worried looks.
"Is this him? The one from the p-" Annie started.
"Not now Annabeth, he is still awake." Chiron reprimanded. That's when I looked over where the kid was and saw that he was passed out on my shoulder. I scanned his face, seeing cuts and bruises from the battle. He couldn't have been more than 12.
Jesus, 12 and fighting for his life. How long had he known about the life? This world? I picked him up and carried him to the infirmary. After I had seen to stitching up his deep cuts and applying bandages and healing salves, I sat down and kept an eye on him.
"Bull baby, of all the monsters to send after an innocent kid."
"How do you know he's innocent?" I jumped, unaware of Annie being in the room.
"Because, I have a gut feeling, and I've learned to trust my gut."
"That's so stupid." I chuckled. Annie got red in the face, "Well it is! Using your brain is much more efficient."
"So you're telling me that you ignore your instincts on the battlefield?" I inquired.
"Well I- I mean- I just- Shut up!" That made me burst into another fit of laughter. But Annie had a scowl on her face showing she did not appreciate my teasing.
"Aw come on, Annie."
"...."
"Are you really mad at this amazing beautiful specimen?"
"..."
"Okay, I guess you don't want to read any more of my dad’s architecture books.”
"What?! No! I'm not mad!"
I laughed, and eventually so did she. It was rare to see a smile on her face, especially after Luke got his quest. The poor girl couldn't get a break. She had been here a long time, not as long as I have, but still a long time. She just wants to prove she's worthy of being a daughter of Athena.
"mom. .. . ." The kid groaned quietly. I whipped my head around and immediately grabbed his hand, so he could have something to ground himself with if needed. He opened his eyes and oh my gods, they were like the ocean.
Ocean?
No.
Why.
But the pact.
I swear they're more horny than a teenager.
That's why this kid is attracting so many monsters.
Not just because of Hades.
But because of his parent.
Poseidon.

click here for morrigan ’ s full bio . general history below the cut . please read it this monstrosity of 1769 words took me 2 - 3 hours so fuckin L mobile users
tl ; dr . note that “ first ” coincides with the books , not the years / dates . if it ’ s third autumn then that means the fall during the year of titan ’ s curse . morrigan is raised by loving parents yet she runs away after being attacked by her first monster . she comes to chb in spring & becomes best friends with luke . she grows awfully resentful of percy . luke ’ s betrayal is a stab in the gut . fast forward to second spring , & she manages to contact luke early summer . she joins him then after being claimed in first december , & works as a spy up until fourth autumn . she begins to doubt her allegiance when kronos takes on luke as a host , & that doubt only grows as she battles in chb ’ s woods . by the fifth summer , she is sure , yet she still fights for luke because she misses him . by the time the second titan war starts , she is a top general that joins in the battle of manhattan on numerous occasions . she is never out without kronos , though , & only appears in battle as he does . by the end , she gains the courage to go against kronos ( silena ’ s death is part of the tipping point ) & helps the fight by hanging back when he calls for her & ethan to go to olympus ; though that only drives monsters towards her . she ends up creating a chasm that sinks much of the army . she passes out afterwards , & is brought to a safe place by hades . click here for a synopsis of her heroes of olympus verse ( under co ) .
tw for : death , slight manipulation , brief mention of non - descriptive eye trauma .
* completely optional part that i ’ m still debating in making a part of her main verse : ethan meant a lot to her . the two of them were exceptionally close as luke ’ s right hands , possible delving into romantic tension . he died before anything could be talked about & that seriously hurt her .
born & raised in new york city , she ’ s a bronx kid who grew up loved  , albeit a little sheltered . her adoptive mother entered her life when she was around five , & immediately won her over with her kind words & optimistic perspective . though , as lisa likes to remark , eun - hee had rubbed off on her more ( & as was expected . she raised a child through her bitterness  , & showed her daughter the truth while teaching her the revolutionary views she held ) . someday , she ’ ll change the world , eun - hee had boasted , over rice & fish . i just know it .
& her childhood had been like that . loved , safe . yet something felt wrong , felt off ; looming shadows & whispering voices that accompanied her throughout the day , the feeling of something that had watched her the moment she stepped foot into middle school . & she was right ; something was wrong , even if it wasn ’ t in the way she had intended . a calculated plan formed by a monster she dares not name , it had driven her away from home & left her cold & numb on a bus out ; does reality dare lose itself when i need it most ?
she doesn ’ t stay alone for long ; & later , a kid her age boards the bus to sit next to her . rows of empty seats , & they had chosen hers in the very back . i promise you that i ’ m offering something that will make sense , they tell her , & she accepts . what has she got to lose now , anyways ? so they switch buses & it ’ s a rather uneventful ride , but along the way she notices more about them . the shoes on their feet fit loosely , they ’ ve got extremely hairy legs , & something about their face seems off . she can ’ t quite grasp it .
she follows them through woods & to a pine tree on a hill , where the words CAMP HALF - BLOOD shines out to them . & there they are , whisked away into a camp where she ’ s promised she ’ ll never feel out of place in . yet she lies when they ask about your parents ; or at least , her mortal ones . she says they kicked her out when she knows they are worried sick about her . chiron looks hesitant to believe her , but she refuses to say anything else on it . so he leaves her be & she returns to her happy bubble , with other kids her age & a story that seems to make sense .
then she meets him . luke castellan , her counselor , & she immediately likes him . spring flies by & she sticks with him , the one friend to count on . even as she grows bitter over not being claimed , even as she shines bright with getting a pegasus to like her , he is there to comfort & applaud her at every second . you are a little sister i am glad to have , he tells her , & she tells him he ’ s being sappy .
( she regrets it , years later . swallows everything she wished she could have told him , the appreciation & gratitude ) .
summer comes & she meets percy . he is easily likable & seems as bitter as her , yet she stays wary . something in her says that he cannot be trusted , that he is a danger to her . she waits , eyes him at dinner , loses track of him during capture the flag ( yet she finds that she is quite the fit for a hermes kid with her speed ) , & enjoys the campfire up until ... he gets claimed . & her bitterness only grows at that , finds herself making a rival she didn ' t expect . especially when he goes out on a quest he seems predestined to have , when he gets all the fame & glory for being a big 3 kid .
( she never apologizes , even years later , yet she swallows words that could have been the start of a tentative friendship ) .
summer passes in excruciating wait , whispers of percy this & percy that ever present in every corner . even luke isn ’ t immune , & she loathes everyone for it . yet by the end , when she is glad for it to be over , she finds herself horrified that she ever wished it ’ s end . for betrayal is never sweet , & when percy announces it with a scorpion stinger ’ s wound to prove it , she runs to hide herself away in her sleeping bag & cries herself to sleep . she dreams of sweet spring days & misses luke more with every passing day .
autumn passes in a blur , yet the start of winter brings her an unwanted gift . right before her birthday she is claimed , marked as a daughter of hades right under everyone ’ s noses . chiron goes pale . mr . d looks troubled . the campers are afraid & whispering . & never before has she hated her never present father more , with roiling anger that threatens to tear her whole . she passes dinner to gather her things , tucks the sleeping back under her arm , & ... remembers there is no hades cabin . there is no hades cabin , no place for her . where is her fame & glory ? she thinks that night , where is her acclaim ?
she ends up living in the big house .
the months before the second summer , she tries contacting luke . even with the bitter taste of a prophecy chiron had told her , of her importance , she yearns for the once person who had been a friend . who she hopes , desperately , will be her friend still . the first month , nothing . but just shy of june , she succeeds . he is surprised , slack jawed in the mist , asks her how , but instead she tells him of her claiming . of hades ’ horrible birthday gift , of the campers ’ treatment , of her struggles . & to her relief , he accepts her . tells her to meet up with him in the city , promises her information .
she gets it . his full involvement , the monster army , kronos , the deal he can ' t back out of . she tells him you can ’ t , he asks her , you have anything better ? she doesn ’ t . & he asks her if camp is better , where they sleight minor & dare to sleight major gods , asks her if they have built a cabin for her yet , & she tells him he doesn ’ t need to play tricks & manipulate her onto his side . she tells him that from the start , she had felt slighted . & so he asks her to be his spy , alongside silena . of all people . she asks him how long . he says not long . she eventually agrees .

tl;dr. note that “ first ” coincides with the books, not the years / dates. if it’s third autumn then that means the fall during the year of titan's curse. morrigan is raised by loving parents yet she runs away after being attacked by her first monster. she comes to chb in spring & becomes best friends with luke. she grows awfully resentful of percy. luke's betrayal is a stab in the gut. fast forward to second spring, & she manages to contact luke early summer. she joins him then after being claimed in first december, & works as a spy up until fourth autumn. she begins to doubt her allegiance when kronos takes on luke as a host, & that doubt only grows as she battles in chb’s wood . by the fifth summer, she is sure, yet she still fights for luke because she misses him. by the time the second titan war starts, she is a top general that joins in the battle of manhattan on numerous occasions. she is never out without kronos, though, & only appears in battle as he does. by the end, she gains the courage to go against kronos ( silena’s death is part of the tipping point ) & helps the fight by hanging back when he calls for her & ethan to go to olympus; though that only drives monsters towards her. she ends up creating a chasm that sinks much of the army. she passes out afterwards, & is brought to a safe place by hades.
* something not mentioned below: ethan meant a lot to her. the two of them were exceptionally close as luke’s right hands, possible delving into romantic tension. he died before anything could be talked about & that seriously hurt her.
tw for: death, slight manipulation, brief mention of non - descriptive eye trauma.
born & raised in new york city, she’s a bronx kid who grew up loved, albeit a little sheltered. her adoptive mother entered her life when she was around five, & immediately won her over with her kind words & optimistic perspective. though, as lisa likes to remark, eun - hee had rubbed off on her more ( & as was expected. she raised a child through her bitterness, & showed her daughter the truth while teaching her the revolutionary views she held ). someday, she’ll change the world, eun - hee had boasted, over rice & fish. i just know it.
& her childhood had been like that. loved, safe. yet something felt wrong, felt off; looming shadows & whispering voices that accompanied her throughout the day, the feeling of something that had watched her the moment she stepped foot into middle school. & she was right; something was wrong, even if it wasn’t in the way she had intended. a calculated plan formed by a monster she dares not name, it had driven her away from home & left her cold & numb on a bus out; does reality dare lose itself when i need it most?
she doesn’t stay alone for long; & later, a kid her age boards the bus to sit next to her. rows of empty seats, & they had chosen hers in the very back. i promise you that i’m offering something that will make sense, they tell her, & she accepts. what has she got to lose now, anyways? so they switch buses & it’s a rather uneventful ride, but along the way she notices more about them. the shoes on their feet fit loosely, they’ve got extremely hairy legs, & something about their face seems off. she can’t quite grasp it.
she follows them through woods & to a pine tree on a hill, where the words camp half - blood shines out to them. & there they are, whisked away into a camp where she’s promised she’ll never feel out of place in. yet she lies when they ask about your parents; or at least, her mortal ones. she says they kicked her out when she knows they are worried sick about her. chiron looks hesitant to believe her, but she refuses to say anything else on it. so he leaves her be & she returns to her happy bubble, with other kids her age & a story that seems to make sense.
then she meets him. luke castellan, her counselor, & she immediately likes him. spring flies by & she sticks with him, the one friend to count on. even as she grows bitter over not being claimed, even as she shines bright with getting a pegasus to like her, he is there to comfort & applaud her at every second. you are a little sister i am glad to have, he tells her, & she tells him he’s being sapp .
( she regrets it, years later. swallows everything she wished she could have told him, the appreciation & gratitude ).
summer comes & she meets percy. he is easily likable & seems as bitter as her, yet she stays wary. something in her says that he cannot be trusted, that he is a danger to her. she waits, eyes him at dinner, loses track of him during capture the flag ( yet she finds that she is quite the fit for a hermes kid with her speed ), & enjoys the campfire up until… he gets claimed. & her bitterness only grows at that =, finds herself making a rival she didn’t expect. especially when he goes out on a quest he seems predestined to have, when he gets all the fame & glory for being a big 3 kid.
( she never apologizes, even years later, yet she swallows words that could have been the start of a tentative friendship ).
summer passes in excruciating wait, whispers of percy this & percy that ever present in every corner. even luke isn’t immune, & she loathes everyone for it. yet by the end, when she is glad for it to be over, she finds herself horrified that she ever wished it’s end. for betrayal is never sweet, & when percy announces it with a scorpion stinger’s wound to prove it, she runs to hide herself away in her sleeping bag & cries herself to sleep. she dreams of sweet spring days & misses luke more with every passing day.
autumn passes in a blur, yet the start of winter brings her an unwanted gift. right before her birthday she is claimed ,marked as a daughter of hades right under everyone’s noses . chiron goes pale. mr. d looks troubled. the campers are afraid & whispering. & never before has she hated her never present father more, with roiling anger that threatens to tear her whole. she passes dinner to gather your things, tucks the sleeping back under her arm, & … remembers there is no hades cabin. there is no hades cabin, no place for her. where is her fame & glory? she thinks that night, where is her acclaim?
she ends up living in the big house.
the months before the second summer, she tries contacting luke. even with the bitter taste of a prophecy chiron had told her, of her importance, she yearns for the once person who had been a friend. who she hopes, desperately, will be her friend still. the first month, nothing . but just shy of june, she succeeds. he is surprised, slack jawed in the mist, asks her how, but instead she tells him of her claiming. of hades’ horrible birthday gift, of the campers’ treatment, of her struggles. & to her relief, he accepts her. tells her to meet up with him in the city, promises her information.
she gets it. his full involvement, the monster army, kronos, the deal he can’t back out of. she tells him you can’t, he asks her, you have anything better? she doesn’t. & he asks her if camp is better, where they sleight minor & dare to sleight major gods, asks her if they have built a cabin for her yet, & she tells him he doesn’t need to play tricks & manipulate her onto his side. she tells him that from the start, she had felt slighted. & so he asks her to be his spy, alongside silena. of all people. she asks him how long. he says not long. she eventually agrees.
the next year passes in more of a blur. it grows eventful as luke starts getting all the pieces he needs, yet she doesn’t focus much on the events. she starts to resent silena & her pretty ways, her stellar acting. when she herself can barely keep her own together, where she spends more days hiding & shutting herself in to keep the bitter taste of betrayal out of her mouth. one day she asks her how she does it. silena replies that it’s all for charlie, that it’s easier knowing that he’ll be safe. she grows disgusted. how could you sacrifice all for one person? she wants to cry, but she finds herself no better.
by the start of the fourth autumn, she fully joins luke. he only needs one messenger to get his word across, & so she participates in the nitty - gritty aspects of his plan. she gets the monsters, the funding, the demigods he needs. rallies them together under the promise of a better life, where the gods can’t ignore them. she knows luke means to get rid of them; or is that kronos she senses, hiding just beneath the surface of their dreams? she can feel the titan watching hers, careful. waiting for betrayal, no doubt, because he needs his pawn of the prophecy to tip the tides into his favor. he’s waiting for the perfect moment to seize her mind. ( she has already stumbled once, while sparring with luke sometime between second & third fall. she has mistepped once & nearly lost her eye from it; she cannot risk mistepping again, if not for her sake then for luke’s. )
by fourth summer, she starts to wonder if she has chosen wrong. the final battle through twisting labyrinth only grates on her as luke - but - not - luke leads through. blue eyes are traded for gold & kronos sneers with luke’s face. she misses her friend, her real one. she misses the luke she met back from first spring, where may flowers had bloomed under gentle care of demeter’s children. those she now fights against, as she hacks her way through vines & dodges like she’s born for the fight. in a way she is  she supposes, but she isn’t born to hurt her own. so she takes care to knock them out only, away from other monsters to finish the job. it is her small mercy for those who have hurt her.
by fifth summer, she is tired. she has surely chosen wrong. she is certain as kronos walks with luke’s feet, stares at olympus with luke’s - eyes - but - not - luke’s - eyes. yet she can’t do much, bound to serve as his right hand. still, percy’s arrival on the andromeda is surprising; & beckendorf’s death even moreso, as she escapes last minute with ethan, in tow with kronos. & she swallows words for silena, i’m sorry i'm sorry i’m sorry i couldn’t do anything. she is so tired. she wants to escape this war yet she is in the middle of it. as she prepares for manhattan, as she prepares for more death, she swallows words for luke, i’m sorry you had no choice. as she fights on the bridge, as she fights against percy, as she fights against people who could have been family, she swallows words, i’m sorry.
so she defies kronos, during his last call for support. she stands still, with all eyes on her ( & her father, to who she wishes him a bitter thank you for his birthday gift all those years ago ). & kronos is enraged, but she decides that, if he succeeds , she will face his wrath later. instead , she focuses her thoughts on the monsters that threaten to surround her, & she fights with the last of her swallowed words.
for silena. for beckendorf. for ethan. for luke. for all the unclaimed. for all those forced to be a pawn. & she prays that percy succeeds.
mortals wake up around her, & she knows she must act fast. she dives into her well of power, down down down, as much time as she can snatch out to drive the army down. she imagine a pit so deep that those who fall will greet tartarus, & she

chapter forty-five—the fate we make
read Child of Land and Sea here
Act V — Walking On Water
Part VIII — We're off on a mission, we're tough; in good condition. We're short but standing tall. No fear!
Tumblr media
Thalia said the Titan wanted to see Andy under the flag of truce, that he had a message from Kronos. Andy didn't seem to have a choice. The flag was as big as a soccer field and was carried by a thirty-foot-tall giant with bright blue skin.
"A Hyperborean," Thalia said. "The giants of the north. It's a bad sign that they sided with Kronos. They're usually peaceful."
"You've met them?" Andy asked.
"Mmm. There's a big colony in Alberta. I'm telling you, you do not want to get into a snowball fight with those guys."
With the giant, came a half-blood in armor, an empousa demon and a tall man in a tuxedo. The group walked leisurely toward the them.
"The tux dude is the Titan?" Andy guessed. Grover nodded.
The Titan stepped forward. He was taller than an average human. His black hair was tied in a ponytail. Sunglasses covered his eyes, and the skin in his face and arms was covered in scratches. "Andy Jackson," he greeted. "It's a great honor."
"Why? Are you a fan or something?"
"I think he was only being polite," Thalia pointed out.
"Well, he can-" Andy caught herself when she realized the half-blood was Ethan Nakamura. The son of a bitch. His nose looked like a squashed tomato which made her feel a little better. "Oh, you shouldn't have come here," Andy told him. "Now I'll be forced to hurt you."
Ethan glared at her, unsure if she was being serious.
"To business," the Titan got between them. "I am Prometheus."
With difficulty, Andy tore her eyes away from Ethan and shook the other guy's hand. "The fire-stealer guy who was chained to a rock with the vultures?"
Prometheus winced. "Please, don't mention the vultures. But yes, I stole fire from the gods and gave it to your ancestors. In return, the ever merciful Zeus had me chained to a rock and tortured for all eternity."
"And how-"
"How did I get free? Hercules did that, eons ago. So you see, I have a soft spot for heroes. Some of you can be quite civilized."
"Unlike the one beside you," she commented.
"Oh, demons aren't so bad," Prometheus eyed the empousa. "You just have to keep them well fed."
"I meant him," Andy specified pointing at Ethan and thinking of ways to make him suffer.
Prometheus smiled as if he too didn't like Ethan but was too polite to say anything. "Andy Jackson, let us parley." Prometheus laced his fingers. He looked earnest, kindly, and wise. The idea of fighting him made Andy sad. "Andy, your position is weak. You know you can't stop another assault."
"We can do this all day."
Prometheus looked pained. "Andy, I'm the Titan of forethought. I know what is going to happen."
"Also the Titan of crafty counsel," Grover put in. "Emphasis on crafty."
Prometheus shrugged. "True enough, satyr. But I supported the gods in the last war. I told Kronos: 'You don't have the strength. You'll lose.' And I was right. So you see, I know how to pick the winning side. This time, I'm backing Kronos."
"Because Zeus chained you to a rock," Thalia guessed.
"Partly, yes. I won't deny I want revenge. It was very upsetting what I went through. But that's not the only reason I'm supporting Kronos. It's the wisest choice. I'm here because I thought you might listen to reason. We have you surrounded. We know your numbers. We outnumber you twenty to one."
"You also have a spy."
Prometheus smiled apologetically. "At any rate, our forces are growing daily. Tonight Kronos will attack. You will be overwhelmed, Andy. You've fought bravely, but there's just no way you can hold all of Manhattan. You'll be forced to retreat to the Empire State Building. There you'll be destroyed. I have seen this. It will happen."
Andy shook her head. "I won't let that happen. Our future isn't set. I can change it. We can all change it."
"Understand, Andy. You are re-fighting the Trojan War here. Patterns repeat themselves in history. They reappear just as monsters do. A great siege. Two armies. And you are Troy. Do you know what happened to the Trojans?"
Andy felt again, that fear creeping inside of her. But she wouldn't let him see it. "You're going to cram a wooden horse into the elevator at the Empire State Building? Good luck with that, buddy."
Prometheus smiled. "Troy was completely destroyed, Andy. You don't want that to happen here. Stand down, and New York will be spared. Your forces will be granted amnesty. I will personally assure your safety. Let Kronos take Olympus. Who cares? Typhon will destroy the gods anyway."
"You expect me to believe that Kronos would spare us? That he has even a drop of mercy in his blood?"
"All he wants is Olympus," Prometheus promised. "The might of the gods is tied to their seats of power. When Kronos destroys Olympus, the gods will fade. They will become so weak they will be easily defeated. Kronos would rather do this while Typhon has the lost. But make no mistake, the best you can do is slow us down. The day after tomorrow, Typhon arrives in New York, and you will have no chance at all. The gods and Mount Olympus will still be destroyed, but it'll be much messier. Much, much worse for you and your city. Either way, the Titans will rule."
"I serve Artemis," Thalia said angrily. "The Hunters will fight to our last breath. Andy, you're not seriously going to listen to this slimeball, are you?"
"You both have courage," Prometheus said. "But the courageous die too. We need not be enemies. I have always been a helper of mankind."
"That's a load of shit," Thalia said. "When mankind first sacrificed to the gods, you tricked them into giving you the best portion. You gave us fire to annoy the gods, not because you cared about us."
Prometheus shook his head. "You don't understand. I helped shape your nature. I have been whispering in man's ear since the beginning of your existence. I represent your curiosity, your sense of exploration, your inventiveness. Help me save you, Andy. Do this, and I will give mankind a new gift – a new revelation that will move you as far forward as fire did. You can't make that kind of advance under the gods. They would never allow it. Bu this could be a new golden age for you. You know in your heart that Titans and their offspring aren't all bad. You've met Calypso. She made you see."
"That was different-"
"How? Much like me, she did nothing wrong, and yet she was exiled forever simply because she was Atlas's daughter. We are not your enemies. Don't let the worst happen," he pleaded. "We offer you peace."
Andy looked back at Ethan Nakamura. "Peace... If we take this deal, you don't get your revenge. You don't get to kill us all. Isn't that what you want?"
His good eye flared. "All I want is respect, Jackson. The gods never gave me that. You wanted me to go to your stupid camp, spend my time crammed into the Hermes cabin because I'm not important? Not even recognized?"
"People make mistakes. Gods make mistakes too. You ask us to respect vengeance?"
"Nemesis stands for balance! When people have too much good luck, she tears them down."
"Is that why she took your eye? Were you just too damn lucky?"
"It was payment," he growled. "In exchange, she swore to me that one day I would tip the balance of power. I would bring the minor gods respect. An eye was a small price to pay."
"Mother of the year."
"At least she keeps her word, unlike the Olympians. She always pays her debts – good or evil."
Andy punched him so hard in the face he fell backwards. "I saved your life! You son of a bitch, I saved your life! And you repaid me by raising Kronos and hurting Anthony! You want someone who keeps their word? Well, you got me, Ethan Nakamura. And I swear I will watch you die!" As soon as the words left her mouth, Andy regretted them. She knew she was just being mean, that she was just angry.
Although the fear that crossed Ethan's good eye kind of made it worthwhile. He grabbed the hilt of his sword, but Prometheus stopped him. "We're on a diplomatic mission." The Titan studied Andy. "It bothers you what happened to Luke," he decided. "Hestia didn't show you the full story. Perhaps if you understood..." He reached out. Thalia cried in warning, but before Andy could react, the Titan touched her forehead.
Suddenly she was back in May Castellan's living room. Thalia sat on the table while Ms Castellan bandaged her wounded leg. Anthony held her hand. Hermes and Luke stood apart in the living room.
"Why show yourself now?" Luke demanded. "All these years I've been calling to you, praying you'd show up, and nothing. You left me with her!"
"Do not dishonor her," Hermes warned. "Your mother did the best she could. As for me, I could not interfere with your path. The children of the gods must find their own way."
"So it was for my own good?" Luke cried. "Growing up on the streets, fending for myself, fighting monsters?"
"You're my son," Hermes said. "I knew you had the ability. When I was only a baby, I-"
"I am not a god! Just once, you could've said something. You could've helped when... when she was having one of her fits, shaking me and saying crazy things about my fate. When I used to hide in the closet so she wouldn't find me with those... those glowing eyes! Did you even care that I was scared? Did you even know when I finally ran away?"
Ms Castellan was singing aimlessly, but it was obvious the others could hear them.
"Luke, I care very much," Hermes said slowly, "but gods must not interfere directly in mortal affairs. It is one of our Ancient Laws. Especially when your destiny..." his voice trailed off and Andy finally understood. Hermes knew; he had known all along. He knew what would happen to his son and he did nothing to stop it.
"What?" Luke asked. "What about my destiny?"
"You should not have come back," Hermes muttered. "It only upsets you both. I'll speak with Chiron and have him send a satyr to help you get to camp."
"We're doing fine without help," Luke growled. "Now, what is my destiny?"
"My son," he said, "I'm the god of travelers, the god of roads. If I know anything, I know that you must walk your own path, make your own choices, even though it tears my heart."
"You don't love me."
"I do love you. Just... go to camp. I will see that you get a quest soon. You will get a chance to be a great hero before-"
"Before what?" Luke's voice was trembling now. "What did my mom see that made her like this? What's going to happen to me? If you love me, tell me!"
Hermes expression tightened. "I cannot."
"Then you don't care!" Luke yelled.
Finally, May stopped her singing. "Luke? Is that you? Is my boy alright?"
"I'm fine. I have a new family now. I don't need either of you."
"I'm your father," Hermes insisted.
"A father is supposed to be around. I've never even met you. Thalia, Tony, come on! We're leaving!"
"My boy, don't go!" May Castellan called after him. "I have your lunch ready!"
Luke stormed out the door, Thalia and Anthony scrambling after him. May Castellan tried to follow, but Hermes held her back. She collapsed in his arms and began to shake. Her eyes opened – glowing green. "My son," she hissed. "Danger. Terrible fate!"
"I know, my love," Hermes said sadly. "Believe me, I know."
The image faded. Prometheus pulled his hand away from Andy's forehead. Her face was wet with tears. She had to focus not to throw up.
"Andy?" Thalia called. "What... what was that?"
Prometheus nodded sympathetically. "Appalling, is it not? The gods know what is to come, and yet they do nothing, even for their children. How long did it take for them to tell you your prophecy, Andy Jackson? Don't you think your father knows what will happen to you?"
Andy held back a sob.
"Andy," Grover warned, "he's playing with your mind. Trying to make you upset." He could read her emotions so he probably knew Prometheus was succeeding at that.
"Do you really blame your friend Luke?" the Titan asked her. "What about you, Andy? Will you be controlled by your fate? Kronos offers you a much better deal."
Andy clenched her fists. "No. Tell Kronos... You tell him to call of his attack. Tell him to leave Luke's body and return to the pits of Tartarus. If he chooses to continue this war, then let him know we're right here. We'll be our own heroes. And we will write our own stories - to death or to victory. That is my message."
The empousa snarled but Prometheus just sighed. "If you change your mind," he said, "I have a gift for you." A Greek vase appeared in Andy's hands. The ceramic lid was fastened with a leather harness.
Groven whimpered. Thalia gasped. "That's not-"
"Yes," Prometheus said. "You recognize it. This belonged to my sister-in-law. Pandora."
"Pandora's box?" Andy asked.
"I don't know how this box business started. It was never a box. It was a pithos, a storage jar. I suppose Pandora's pithos doesn't have the same ring to it. Nevertheless, she opened this jar, which contained most of the demons that now haunt mankind – fear, death, hunger, sickness."
"Don't forget me," the empousa purred.
"Indeed," Prometheus conceded. "The first empousa was also trapped in this jar, released by Pandora. But what I find curious about the story is how Pandora always gets the blame. She is punished for being curious. The gods would have you believe that this is the lesson: mankind should not explore. They should not ask questions. They should do what they are told. In truth, Andy, this jar was a trap designed by Zeus and the other gods. It was revenge on me and my entire family. The gods knew she would open the jar. They were willing to punish the entire race of humanity along with us." Prometheus tapped the lid of Pandora's jar. "Only one spirit remained inside when Pandora opened it."
"Hope," Andy whispered.
Prometheus looked pleased. "Yes. Elpis, the Spirit of Hope, would not abandon humanity. Hope does not leave without being given permission. She can only be released by a child of man. I give you this as a reminder of what the gods are like. Keep Elpis, if you wish. But if you decide that you have seen enough destruction, enough futile suffering, then open the jar. Let Elpis go. Give up Hope, and I will know that you are surrendering. I promise Kronos will be lenient. He will spare the survivors." He stood and left, the others following him.
"What did he show you?" Thalia demanded. Reluctantly, Andy told her. "Ah... Yeah, that was a bad night," she admitted.
"What happened to Ms Castellan?"
"I don't know. Luke told us about the strange things she would say. What caused it... I have no idea. If he ever knew, he never told me."
"But Hermes knew," Andy said. "Something caused May to see parts of Luke's future, and Hermes knew what she had seen – that he would turn into Kronos."
Thalia frowned. "You can't be sure of that. Prometheus was manipulating you. Hermes did love Luke. I could tell just by looking at his face. And Hermes was there that night because he was checking up on May, taking care of her. He wasn't all bad."
"But it isn't right. Luke was just a kid. Hermes never helped him, never stopped him from running away."
"Andy," Thalia said darkly, "this is exactly why I joined the Hunters. It's easier to control our feelings, you know? Love... it stops being so overwhelming. We all have tough things to deal with. All demigods do. And like you said: people make mistakes. Mothers, fathers. Gods. But Luke... he made terrible choices. And he made them on his own. Nobody forced him."
"So you don't love him anymore?"
"Don't say that. I will never stop-" she stopped herself. "If you're worried about who loves who... Well, if Tony... I mean, if he has to face Luke in battle, I don't know if he can do it. From the moment those two met, they've had a connection. They don't share the same blood, but they are brothers. After that night... After we left his mom's house? Luke was never the same. He got reckless and moody, like he was trying to prove something. By the time Grover found us... well, part of the reason we had so much trouble was because Luke wouldn't be careful. He wanted to pick a fight with every monster we crossed. And Tony... he didn't think that was a problem. He likes recklessness, just look at you."
"Who are you calling reck-"
"Those two together..." Thalia continued. "They wanted to be heroes. All I'm saying is... don't fall into the same trap. Luke has given himself to Kronos. We can't afford to be soft on him just because we love him."
Slowly, Andy nodded. "Alright. I hear you."
"I'm going to check on the Hunters, then get some more sleep before nightfall. You should crash too."
"No, I don't want to. I'll only have bad dreams."
"I know, believe me," Thalia looked down. "But there's no telling when you'll get another chance to sleep. It's going to be a long night. Maybe our last night."
"Do me a favor then," Andy handed her the jar. "Lock this in the hotel vault, will you? Hope isn't going anywhere. Not while I'm around."
Thalia smiled. "You got it."
Andy watched her go then found the nearest bed and passed out.

While Luke's death was a 10/10 in terms of plot(the foreshadowing, the prophecy, how it had this simple elegance about it),it only reached a 7 in terms of character (that event was a good finish for his arc, explained his motivations, but I feel like Luke dying was the thing that interrupted his redemption arc,or stopped him from having a real one. If Rick focused more on the tragedy of this, rather than using Luke's death as an atoning act on itself,I'd grade it higher. Besides,Luke still had plenty of history potential,IMO. Imagine if Luke had escaped the Underworld, getting to be one of the seven, the angst while dealing with rejection from the camp, the regret).
I have once again let an ask collect dust for a month (and a half. . .), I am so sorry about that.
Anyways. I mostly agree with you, in that I think Luke's death is a pretty perfect ending to TLO, with a giant fucking asterisk.
That giant fucking asterisk's name is Heroes of Olympus.
The original series has a very open ending, and that's very much on purpose—for the first time, Percy has his whole life ahead of him, there is hope that demigods are going to live longer lives, that the gods can change. As such, Luke's death is super fucking important. Here's a guy who's had his faith in a better world, in creating good change that isn't enforced by the most nightmarish of violence, destroyed.
And he dies for that faith in a better world, on the word of one of the two people left that could possibly convince him to do so. It's a pretty good death.
*Winces* . . .and then the sequels happened.
Luke's absence from the narrative—something that I've talked about before, how it should have haunted the plot, and Percy and Annabeth and Piper in particular, I think—is, ultimately, an absence of a larger problem.
The consequences from that war should be deafening. Like, you should not be able to swing a dead cat without hitting a consequence in TLH (And SoN. Especially SoN).
Mostly, I think it would've been fascinating, with Gaea pulling out "mythology's worst villains" from Tartarus, with Medea and Minas and so many others, to have her also pull out the most high-profile demigod villain in the last millennium.
Like, you wanna sow chaos in the ranks? You wanna make Percy Jackson, who's approaching the very same age Luke was when he first heard from Kronos, doubt his every move?
Yeah, bring Luke Castellan back from the dead and bring out the popcorn.
(I don't think Luke would stay on her side for very long, considering he likes the world's existence, thanks very much. But he'd be a helluva wild card)
The worst thing though, as awesome as that could be, is that the lack of him or the second war permeating everyone's characterization is. . .it really runs counter to TLO?
The point was that these demigods had been dismissed as not mattering. That they were inconsequential. These weren't the rare children of Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, being thrown aside and refused rightful recognition.
These children of minor gods, of Olympians whose kids often didn't have much power of their own, being tossed aside and left for dead, when all they wanted was a sign that their parents loved them, thought they mattered.
And when they couldn't do that, Luke—son of Hermes! No powers in particular, one of a dozen kids of an even larger cabin, counselor of the place housing the unclaimed when no one else would—mounted a rebellion to prove them wrong and make their regret of ignoring their kids the last thing they did.
Percy's intervention gave a happy ending to that tale, considering the fact that Kronos was in the driver's seat, and left the ending of TLO with the feeling, that, yeah, Luke was right about the need for change, but he wasn't right in how, but he was able to give Percy the leverage needed to do things right.
It's the son of Hermes, the son of Nemesis, the daughter of Athena, a mortal, who all decide the day. Percy has to let go of being the hero, Nico is trapped down below in Manhattan, and Thalia is literally immobilized by a statue.
Luke and the unclaimed were important. And then HoO just. . .does away with all of that.
Kids are going unclaimed, divisions are alive and well, the gods once again don't give a fuck when the world is ending and their kids are being tossed around and manipulated for their parents' ends. Silena and Luke are barely spoken of (Ethan getting a mention? Don't make me laugh).
Which. . .says a whole awful lot. About everyone.

Part 56. Nico feels like he crossed a line.
In short: Nico gets therapy from Dionysus. In this chapter, they talk about Nico’s visit to May Castellan. The rest is on AO3 and FanFiction.net! And in Tumblr tags like Nico di Angelo, Dionysus, May Castellan (This specific arc) Etc.
This might be crazy: Chapter 56: Purple Kool-aid
I sat down on the porchchair. ‘Do you already know what happend?’
‘I can never be entirely sure, of course, but I have a hunch.’ Dionysus made a vial of purple kool-aid and a glass appear on the table. It filled itself. ‘I’ll let you tell your story first.’
‘So that you can scold me afterwards?’
‘Just tell the story.’
‘Okay then.’ I steadied myself. ‘I went to May Castelans’ house. That’s Luke’s mother. You know, that Luke.’
‘I do.’
‘I talked to both her and her caretaker. From the impression I got she is still mentally in a bad place. I helped her bake a few cookies. She isn’t allowed to do that alone, but she had began anyway.’ I took a sip.  ‘At first, she seemed pretty happy, babbling about how Luke would come back and she liked that she saw one of his friends for once.’ My cheeks flushed red. ‘Eh…’
Dionysus nodded. ‘Go on. You can explain later.’
‘Okay. When we sat down for a second, May became sad. It was as if day suddenly turned to night. She began to cry and she wailed about how Luke would never come back.’ I bit my lip. ‘That’s when the caretaker came in. She helped May settle down and told me how she came to be a caretaker. Hermes put her in that place, apparently.’ I took another sip of Kool-aid. ‘I asked the caretaker whether people had tried to cure May from her madness. She didn’t know the answer.’ I looked up at Dionysus. ‘Eh… do you?’
Dionysus tilted his head. ‘I am not sure. I think Hermes… It was Hermes, right?’
‘Yes, it was Hermes.’
‘He would have asked me, yet he did not. I don’t know if he asked Apollo or Asklepius or any of my immortal children instead.’ he thought for a second. ‘He might have thought it is better this way. May gets to live in ignorance, under the illusion everything is fine, instead of having to deal with the burden of what happened.’
I opened my mouth, but Dionysus held up his hand. ‘I am not saying what my opinion on the matter is. I am only saying what Hermes might have had in mind.’
‘Yet, that makes sense, but then...!’
‘We have someone else’s actions to talk about.’
I angrily sighed and crossed my arms. ‘Hm.’
‘Sorry, Nico…’
‘Don’t pretend like you’re sorry.’
‘I won’t, then.’
I sighed. ‘I am not sure how I feel about it,’ I muttered. ‘Powerless, I think, and guilty, and sad. But mostly powerless. She is hurting, there, alone in her house, and I can’t do anything about it. And I feel like I might have added to it.’ I looked at my hands. My lip quivered. ‘I kinda… I think I shouldn’t have lied to her about being Luke’s friend. It probably only confused her. What am I saying, I shouldn’t have gone to her in the first place.’
‘Do you know why you wanted to go to Mays’ house?’
I tried to control my breath. ‘I wanted to see how she was doing,’ I mumbled. ‘I wondered whether she was okay. I wanted to know if someone was helping her, if someone had done anything for her. I…’ I shrugged.
‘I am going to cut in, now.’
 I solemnly nodded.
‘Nico, you didn’t mean any harm. Still, it wasn’t a very well-thought out plan.’ He raised his eyebrows and I nodded in agreement. ‘This is going to be a horrible question, but why didn’t you tell anyone?’
I stared at my glass. ‘I know I should have talked about it, with you, or with someone else, but...’ I sighed. ‘I’ve got no but.’
‘You should at least tell someone when you go on a trip like this. Better yet, you take someone along.’
I nodded. ‘Yes.’ There was a high chance I might do something like it again and he knew it. There was no use lying about it.
‘All I ask is that you tell me your plans next time. If all you do is try, it will have been a step forward.’
‘I tried this time. I mumbled something about being away on saturday.’
‘In that case, I am going to need you to own up to it and tell me next time.’
‘Tough love, this.’
‘So?’
Yeah, so. I took a sip of kool-aid, knowing I would probably look similar to Dakota soon. ‘To come back to what I said earlier, that I told her I was Luke’s friend: I really, really should not have said that. I think she probably forgot it, but it was wrong. I basically knew that as soon as I had said it to her. Also, that caretaker, I…’ I shrugged. ‘I mean, I did explain her who I was, sort of, but maybe I should send her flowers, or something.’
‘I can say you are probably right and May does not remember you. If the contrary is true, I think you’ll find out soon enough. Now it is of importance that you do not make this same mistake again.’
I let my shoulders hang. ‘It feels like the fifth time I try to get it through.’
‘You shouldn’t beat yourself up about what you did. You now it was wrong, now it is time to focus on the future, so you don’t do the same thing a sixth time.’
I nodded. ‘Hm-hm.’
Dionysus looked at me. ‘I am not angry with you.’
He wasn’t. ‘Thanks.’ I was quiet for a few seconds. ‘What now?’
‘You should go help with the beach clean-up. Poseidon will not be happy if remnants of fire work get into his domain.’
‘Eh, yes.’ There are probably people I know working on that as well. I got up and emptied my glass. ‘Bye.’
‘Bye.’
---------------------------------------------------------------
When Nico was gone, Dionysus made a phone appear. He stared at it for a moment. He could try to call Hermes. He could try to make him see what was going on. He could try to make him ask to let him cure the poor woman.
He could have tried if it had been any of his business. Dionysus sighed and looked at the vial of kool-aid. The unspoken rule between the gods was to never meddle with anything that didn’t concern you. It only caused more trouble later down the line, when everyone was wrapped into feuds and relations.
Poor May Castellan, Dionysus thought, while he made the phone disappear. There was nothing he could do about it now.
A/N: Maybe I should explain why Dionysus doesn’t get names wrong. It is because I think it is stupid. That’s it, I don’t have more.
I really had to dig through my brain what the Kool-aid arc was again when I saw it in my google drive table of contents. Then I remembered what I did.
