day 12 || underrated trio in my humble opinion (just lineart under the cut cuz im stuck on which to post)

one of the things that I found particularly interesting in Demigods of Olympus is that it finally gives the best direct comparison we've seen so far between Percy and another character's experiences in terms of academics and particularly ableist discrimination.

The way Zane describes his experiences and what we see in his POV is that, while he is similarly discriminated against for his "atypical" behavior and blame is placed on him, the only sorts of punishments he receives for this are relatively benign, such as an increase in counseling. (It is also notable that Zane is somewhat autistic-coded, such as having the "incorrect" scripts when speaking with adults and Sam explicitly reminding him to remember to make proper eye contact.) Percy, on the other hand, similarly experiences discrimination for "atypical" behavior, but whereas Zane is treated as "too smart for his own good" and given slaps on the wrist, Percy is automatically labeled as aggressive, destructive, and a trouble-maker based on preconceived assumptions about him and is more severely punished, such as being frequently expelled.

We rarely get this level of direct comparison between Percy's experiences and that of another character, particularly such similar experiences, so looking at the differences is really interesting to gauge what their different experiences with ableist discrimination is like - and how it could potentially tie into intersectionality and other forms of discrimination at play for them.

For instance, Zane's parents are generally heavily implied to be middle-class and/or generally financially secure, versus Percy who grew up poor, so it could be classism in combination with ableist discrimination. Alternatively, it could be intersectionality with racial discrimination, as neurodivergent behavior in people of color is significantly more likely to be punished more severely and labeled as aggressive or disruptive behavior due to racist preconceptions - particularly since we know Percy's experiences with ableist discrimination are also somewhat based on assumptions people make regarding his appearance. Both Zane and Percy are racially ambiguous - Zane's appearance essentially being completely unspecified, but Percy at least having some notable details such as having a deep tan complexion. If not racism, it could also be colorism, which in this context often has similar intersectionality. There's a lot of potential options.

It's just very interesting to me! I love having such a direct point of comparison to examine the experiences of two characters within.

despite nobody asking for it, y'all are now being subjected to my disjointed and rambling thoughts on 3rd life grian and secret life scar being forced to cohabitate in scar's post-win secret life world (like, 99% angst by volume)

secret life scar fully starts out thinking that third life grian is putting on an act in order to get close enough to trap/trick him

they're a complete disaster together, two very different kinds of winners

3l grian feels very normal about sl scar not even Being There when sl grian died

sl scar: I became the kind of vicious red your Game was always meant to create, aren't you proud? 3l grian: [distressed warbles] sl scar: [laughs]

3l grian is Suffering (so is sl scar, he just hides it better)

sl scar pretends he only has memories of secret life, but he actually does semi-remember the other games like a half-forgotten story he'd read once, or a fuzzy fragment of a dream

3l grian becomes obsessed with catching him in lies about this

(sl scar singing in his godawful off-key way to his flowers as he tends them, and it's only days later that 3l grian actually figures out what the intended tune was and that it's one of grian's own songs)

sl scar laying back and reaching up to his sunflowers and silently missing the heat of a hotter sun sl scar's longing catches him quietly, in silences 3l scar would have filled with chatter and babbling 3l grian peering at sl scar all the time all the time forever watching him hanging around in his space sl scar really likes to have his own space and independence 3l grian doesn't like to ever let scar out of his sight they definitely argue about it b/c sl scar feels Smothered by 3l grian being so close all the time this argument just results in 3l grian watching him from like up in the air on a tree on the walls atop trader scar's

yes sl scar takes potshots at him with his bow if he spots 3l grian but b/c they're both certifiably unhinged, they decide this is actually a fun game. one of the tiny bright spots of shared fun between them.

(scar actually hits one of his wing shots, though, and grian crashes out of the sky) (grian wakes up in scar's bed, where scar had treated the wound and is taking are of him) (sl scar desperately doesn't want to be alone again, even though he would die his last life before saying it) (when pressed, he claims that he couldn't stand to lose a paying customer to his shop)

and of course, sl scar carries so many new scars that 3l grian's scar didn't have which ones are worse, the ones 3l grian caused but never got to see heal, or the ones he knows nothing about?

3l grian gets a great view of the pretty scars on sl scar's face, the side of his head, messy split skin healed angry even from so long ago

don't worry though, 3l grian doesn't have to see the ones on sl scar's sides and chest

because sl scar leaves his armor on when 3l grian is around. always.

(Not once. Not once! Not once has Grian had to tell him to put his clothes back on)

He Learned Armor stays on around enemies (and everyone is an enemy)

3l Grian gets very used to hearing the mockingly cheerful refrain "Isn't this what you wanted~?"

and just for one final tiny lil bit of angst

sl scar deeply, desperately wants to preen grian's wings but he doesn't remember how to (3l grian would let him. sl scar never asks.)

so assuming vein is a mob boss/shady in some capacity, i think that if xia fei asked him, vein would be honest as much as he could (i don't think vein would risk putting xf in any real danger after all) — but it's xia fei who seems to operate under the notion of ignorance is bliss (thinking about what he said to liu xiao). perhaps even if intuitively he senses there's more to vein than meets the eye....it's not any of his business!! his boss is warm hearted and doting towards him, even if a little strict and eccentric, that's all he needs to know!! so vein doesn't need to, and let's be honest wouldn't, lie to xia fei and would hate to do so...

So obsessed with this line about Melkor bc it perfectly fits how I envision him. He “creates” (if you can call it that) things but he is not attached to them. I see a lot of people making Melkor a dragon dad like a dog dad and that’s perfectly fine and very cute! Just not how I like to portray him normally. I think he treats dragons the way a kid would when they discover some shiny new toy, plays with them for a few days, and then completely disregards them once he’s bored. In this case he keeps them around because they serve his higher purpose of wreaking havoc on Arda, but I don’t think he considers dragons his children, and he certainly isn’t attached to their existence.
