Why do we call them appendages that’s such a strange word. It’s almost an appendix bc we append them I guess, is an appendix on appendage? Is the thing floating around your stomach a finger?

Following up on my horror movie list is Appendage (2023). A woman gets a painful bulge in her side when she feels stressed out, such as during a family dinner and when her boss moves up her presentation and when her boss curses her out and accuses her of plagiarism. I think I've heard this one before, like Hatching, or The Brood, or Malignant, or that time I had to see a gastroenterologist. So obviously there's going to be an "appendage" that emerges to act on her subconscious impulses, but it's not about the destination so much as the journey.

Wow. This is going to be a journey, isn't it?

I didn't really need all that exposition to notice the symbolism, especially not at the beginning of the second act. It's certainly an original twist for there to be a support group for people with the same "condition" as Hannah, though.

Oh, wow. Yeah. This went a few more places than I was initially expecting. The aforementioned journey had a few twists. Although I do have to wonder why they even bothered with the ruse. And they made her pay money for it too, that's just rubbing salt in the wound.

The Babadook called, it wants its ending back.

It was okay. Having the movie's "the monster represents mental illness/inner turmoil" theme spelled out in bold letters felt a little patronizing. Like you're taking elevated horror and dumbing it back down. I was not expecting the "appendage" to be a gross puppet that curses out the protagonist, I wonder if that was intended to be as funny as it came off.

In the end, it was never explained how or why a person with genetic chimerism can have their twin re-emerge as a psychic vampire with a lamprey tongue. I guess that's kind of a cool monster idea.

APPENDAGE - Neutral Setting Documentation + Reflection

Big Ol' Glove chicken wire, paper mache, cloth, sharpie, and a tiny bit of blood approx. 54 in. x 27 in. x 27 in.

This project is what I would consider a total failure.

I chose to shift away from creating a giant grotesque fleshy arm as I thought I'd have difficulty in capturing the details present in that idea. I'm not sure why I went with a cartoonish rubber hose style hand & glove (Which it might not be clear, that is what this work is supposed to be) instead of that, a concept that is typically perfectly smooth, round, and seamless... I was really only pushed forward by how much I liked the thought of seeing that glove in a large scale. I actually thought the chicken wire was pretty fun to work with and mold, I just realized my mistake was when I reached the cloth layer. I believe you can tell it was my first time working with cloth AND that I didn't even attempt to sew anything. The idea behind the work was for it to function as sort of a "cane" you could put your weight onto. Sadly the broom handle I used as a "skeleton" for this purpose was too short and wouldn't really hold on how I wanted to, this meant the piece can't really exist on its own if I'm not wearing it (as shown in my second photo). I probably wouldn't attempt this again but sewing a giant glove meant to fit a giant hand would have been a way better idea.
