New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/jaret-chiles-chief-services-officer-doit-interview-series/
Jaret Chiles, Chief Services Officer, DoiT – Interview Series
Jaret Chiles is the chief services officer (CSO) of DoiT and is responsible for all aspects of their client services organization. With 25+ years of experience across consulting and managed services, cloud adoption, technical sales, security and compliance, he is instrumental in building out a key value driver for DoiT’s business: services, consulting, and support offerings. Since joining the company, Jaret has led development of a scalable services strategy that enables DoiT to grow rapidly – without compromising its unrivaled expertise.
DoiT combines the power of intelligent software products with access to unrivaled multicloud expertise to solve the most complicated and important cloud problems. DoiT’s product portfolio provides the tools to manage cloud cost and infrastructure without compromising the speed or quality of engineering initiatives.
What initially attracted you to computer science and how did you find yourself involved in cloud computing?
My father was an engineer and exposed me to building and modifying computers as a child in the early 80s. My first computer was a TRS-80 Model 4 on which I learned how to do some basic programming by the time I was in elementary school. It’s been an interesting journey and I never really considered working in any other field. During high school, I had my first job working evenings and weekends at an internet service provider doing dial-up, broadband, email and website support. While pursuing a computer science degree in college, I helped run the campus data center and networks and led my first team.
I went on to work in many different roles at a managed hosting services provider. When AWS began to disrupt our legacy models, I recognized the undeniable potential and quickly adapted to the cloud computing era as a cloud architect from the very first release of OpenStack to all the major hyperscalers. Ever since I’ve been focused on helping companies large and small understand how to unlock the value that cloud computing creates for their businesses. My passion for computing has never strayed, but now I find it most rewarding as a servant leader supporting the success and growth of others who share my passion.
Can you elaborate on how DoiT’s intelligent software products and multicloud expertise specifically address the most pressing cloud challenges faced by organizations today?
Through our products and services, DoiT International helps cloud-driven companies harness the public cloud to drive business growth. We’re a full-service provider of intelligent multicloud technology, so we deliver consulting, support and training to solve essential challenges like migration costs and the sheer complexity of cloud usage.
We also provide full-service FinOps technology along with the procurement advantages that organizations need to solve the challenges of navigating and automating public cloud investments. Some of the essential capabilities we provide include multicloud budgeting, reporting, optimization and governance.
DoiT’s global team of cloud experts have decades of experience in the analytics, optimization and governance of cloud architecture, as well as specializations in Kubernetes and artificial intelligence (AI). We also stay on top of emerging technologies, so our clients can take full advantage of them, securely and safely. Our experts have technical leadership backgrounds across verticals. Daily, I’m completely humbled by the actual level of expertise in our organization, I’ve never seen anything like it elsewhere.
How does DoiT Cloud Solve enhance the cloud experience for users, and could you share some success stories or examples of challenges it has helped resolve?
Doit Cloud Solve is a services offering that allows customers to unlock real value in cloud computing with unlimited access to the top experts in the industry. We work backward from what customers actually need, with less friction than traditional consulting and support contracting models. Using Generative AI as an example, we leverage a three-part approach:
Discovery: We delve into specific business objectives, gathering and refining data to lay the groundwork for innovation;
Innovation: We guide feature selection, model training and validation to meet tailored needs; and
Deployment and optimization: We implement and refine generative AI strategy, ensuring your team executes on a seamless integration and with maximum impact.
The DoiT Cloud Solve team provides multicloud consulting, unlimited consultancy and technical support as well as cloud-native training. Customers are able to create optimized architectures and configurations while enhancing the skills and capabilities across their teams, which leads to more efficient and sustainable cloud growth. From the core of the cloud stack with compute, storage and networking, through the full cloud-native product portfolio, to the most advanced and disruptive cloud solutions.
In terms of cloud cost optimization, what strategies or technologies does DoiT employ to help clients maximize their cloud investments while maintaining or enhancing service quality?
Cost optimization starts with a well-designed architecture. DoiT consultants and engineers help customers ensure their cloud architectures are future-ready and assist in creating migration strategies.
Additionally, every IT organization wants to get their desired benefits with the lowest possible spend, and to do this, IT needs timely information and tools that make it simple to manage cloud services. DoiT’s intelligent technology does exactly this, helping engineering and FinOps leaders monitor, manage and optimize their cloud usage and spend.
We help IT utilize advanced technologies like GenAI for both internal and customer-facing workflows, without running into unforeseen massive compute and cost overruns.
DoiT offers a suite of proprietary products like Flexsave and Cloud Navigator. How do these products differentiate from other tools available in the market, and what unique advantages do they offer to your clients?
What sets DoiT apart is its unrivaled expertise, full-service FinOps technology and the procurement advantage that we provide to solve the challenges of navigating and automating public cloud investments. These three pillars operating in harmony is a game changer for customers.
DoiT Flexsave uniquely removes the risk, forecasting and tedious work required for managing a complex portfolio of compute commitments and reservations. Compute costs can often represent more than half of an organization’s cloud spend, so accessing optimized pricing on those workloads is an easy way to lower monthly bills. Flexsave automates commitments, providing cost savings without the need to monitor usage, track expiration and renewal dates, while modifying instances to fit an organization’s reservations.
Security is a major concern in cloud computing. Can you discuss DoiT’s approach to cloud security and how it helps organizations strengthen their security posture?
Security must be part of every step in a customer’s cloud journey. It’s not one-and-done up front, and you don’t bolt it on at the end either. Security is a consideration baked into everything we do from products to services.
As part of architecture reviews, or as a focused session, DoiT Cloud Solve experts will advise on security strategies as well as perform benchmark security reviews of your environment including vulnerability assessment and security control analysis. A sound architecture and proper configuration are paramount to a secure cloud environment, but also careful consideration of customers’ regular operational procedures must be accounted for.
Given the increasing complexity of cloud environments, how does DoiT assist organizations in navigating multicloud strategies and managing infrastructure across multiple providers?
There are many different reasons customers might choose to leverage a multi-cloud strategy. At DoiT we believe in working backwards from the business objectives. Our consultants will help develop a strategy and architecture that meets business objectives without introducing unnecessary complexity.
One of the many challenges in managing a multi-cloud environment on a day-to-day basis is having visibility across all platforms in a consistent and operational manner. DoiT Cloud Navigator extends visibility and anomaly detection capabilities to overcome these challenges and provide the FinOps tools needed manage cloud costs and infrastructure without compromising the speed or quality of engineering initiatives. This allows for a responsible scaling of the business.
Machine learning and AI are becoming critical components of modern IT strategies. How does DoiT support businesses in integrating these technologies into their operations and leveraging them for competitive advantage?
Following the three-part approach mentioned previously, DoiT’s Cloud Solve enables IT to work with our experienced cloud architects, and provides access to knowledge transfer and other resources to enable them to evaluate internal readiness, identify company-specific use cases and collaboratively create customized GenAI solutions.
DoiT also partners with AWS and Google to help their users develop generative AI solutions using those platforms and their supporting applications.
The process of cloud migration can be daunting for many organizations. What key factors should companies consider to ensure a smooth and successful transition to the cloud with DoiT’s assistance?
A successful migration starts with establishing clear business objectives and success criteria. There are many factors to keep in mind when planning and executing a migration to the cloud, including data governance, security and privacy, cost management, scalability, skills and expertise, potential service disruptions and legacy system compatibility. Overlooking any of these and others can lead to delays and cost overruns for the migration.
What emerging trends or technologies in cloud computing is DoiT particularly excited about, and how do you plan to incorporate these into your offerings to drive future growth and innovation?
We are a company full of passionate cloud experts and every new technology hype cycle excites us immensely. That said, our many combined years of experience have taught us not to focus on finding ways to forcefully fit a new exciting technology in a business, but rather to understand what use cases make sense for a business and add real value. This is a very common mistake customers make when they see new emerging technologies and ask for help implementing them in their environments.
Generative AI right now has us very excited for a number of reasons, but the main reason is we have uncovered so many high value use cases for businesses across industries to adopt the technology. Starting with basic productivity and insight use cases, nearly everyone can benefit from GenAI. Moving from there on into AI-powered service development and disruptive GenAI product technologies, we believe the skies are the limit for our customers and we’d love to help them find their path to adoption and production.
Thank you for the great interview, readers who wish to learn more should visit DoiT.

Hi! I saw your post about the current awful disability policies in Aoteroa. I had considered moving there, since I am in bad living situation, but after that post i am reconsidering. My latest ideas had come from the way it managed covid. What are your thoughts on living there? Do you have any advice on resources to get a general idea of the politics in the country? Thank u!!
Aotearoa is a really complicated one - a lot of people want to move here from their respective countries for a better quality of life/better politics, and while we are comparatively very lucky, there is still quite a few things under the surface that a lot of people don’t know.
In terms of disability: we are really restrictive in terms of who we let immigrate that has a declared disability (which is of course, fucking awful, but very important to know if you start to get things in order). Our immigration site can probably give you some rough ideas whether or not you would have issues. Additionally important to consider: our healthcare system is actively struggling very badly. As a result, wait times are long, hospital care is hard to get, and if you need a specialist, they are usually sparse throughout the country, have a very long wait time, and often are private and incredibly expensive, so if you know you need on-going care with a specific specialist, I 100% recommend researching who is in the country (which may also put limitations on where you can easily live).
Similarly, our job market is not fantastic. It’s a small country with limited roles, so if you’re trained in something particular, in can be rough finding a suitable role. We also have what appears to be a decent minimum wage to people outside the country, but when you compare it to our very high cost of living and rent (+ housing crisis), a lot of Aotearoa is incredibly expensive to live in.
With the disability changes you saw: last year, we voted in a new government, consisting of three right wing parties. As a result, we are currently watching our social systems get absolutely gutted while landlords get billions of dollars of tax breaks. Someone on Reddit compiled a list of all the changes they made in their first 100 days (applicable till Feb 24th) to give an idea of the shifting landscape.
I don’t want to be a downer if you really want to migrate here! But there is definitely a lot that people don’t realise, and so if you do decide to move forward, I really recommend doing in-depth research on our immigration requirements, available jobs + rate, rentals in those areas + average rent, and other things you may need access to such as specialised care.
(Also, lots of kiwis follow me, and they may disagree with my assessment or have other things to add, so this is an open invite for them to pitch in!)
#I’m very sorry if this is discouraging but I also don’t want to mislead!#i hope you get some relief from your situation soon ❤️#katie rambles

In the context of a turbulent and unsatisfying three years in office, the incredibly awful September in progress might rank as the three-party German government’s grimmest month yet. After elections in the east that issued record results for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party—another vote, in Brandenburg, looms on Sept. 22—the government is also reeling from the fallout of two Islamist terrorist attacks that left three dead and eight wounded. One of those attacks involved a Syrian asylum-seeker whose petition for protection in Germany had been denied; he had links to the fundamentalist Islamic State, which claimed responsibility for the attack.
Now the government has announced its response: starting on Sept. 16, Germany will unilaterally impose border closures, for six months, on all nine of its borders with other European countries. Incoming foreign nationals will be screened according to arbitrary criteria, and rejected applicants will be forced onto Germany’s next-door neighbors.
Although some details remain unclear, Germany’s plan amounts to an unprecedented step. Eight of the neighboring countries are EU members, and all of them are part of the Schengen regime that guarantees freedom of movement across borders within the bloc and recognizes the right to political asylum. Meanwhile, Germany’s mainstream opposition party is demanding an even more severe policy—one that would essentially prevent the country from accepting any new asylum applicants onto its territory at all.
“Until we achieve strong protection of the EU’s external borders with the new common European asylum system, we must strengthen controls at our national borders,” said Germany’s interior minister, Nancy Faeser. Her proposal involves expedited procedures at the German frontiers to determine whether each person who arrives may enter and apply for political asylum.
According to Faeser, the planned border screenings will limit illegal migration and “protect against the acute dangers posed by Islamist terrorism and serious crime.” There will be more deportations during this period, she said, but they will conform to EU law. But some experts disagree. European law expert Alberto Alemanno, a professor of European law at HEC Paris, told the Guardian that the German controls “represent a manifestly disproportionate breach of the principle of free movement within the Schengen area.”
And Sergio Carrera, a research fellow at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), a Brussels-based think tank, told Foreign Policy that the border closures will most probably have a knock-on effect across the continent: “There’s the risk of these measures triggering a race to the bottom. Where’s the end point? We’re talking about rights that go to the very heart of what the EU is all about.”
The new measures at the German borders ratchet up pressure on European Union norms that are already strained. According to EU law, free movement within the bloc is guaranteed within the Schengen area, which encompasses most EU member countries (except Cyprus and Ireland) as well as Switzerland and Norway. Foreign nationals claiming political persecution have the right to apply for political protection in the country through which they enter the EU. But the bloc’s member countries may suspend Schengen’s guarantees in the case of “internal security concerns” as long as those concerns are proportional and legitimate and the suspensions temporary. Brussels must be briefed in advance.
Germany has had periodic border checks in place along the Austrian border since 2015—a response to the refugee crisis of 2015-16. Last year, in response to heightened migration flows, Germany established checks on its borders shared with Poland, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland. In fact, across the European Union, member states have temporarily restricted internal border crossings 404 times since 2015, according to German daily Die Tageszeitung.
Germany’s move would take another step toward turning the exception policy of internal EU border checks into the rule, argued Christian Jacob of Die Tageszeitung. A European Parliament study issued last year claimed that this was already happening and that a “systematic lack of compliance with EU law” could undermine rule of law guarantees.
One result would almost certainly be a chain reaction across the bloc. Walter Turnowsky, a migration expert at Denmark’s Der Nordschleswiger, a German-language newspaper, fears exactly this. “Officially, the announced German border controls are also temporary, but ultimately the announcement means the end of free travel across the EU,” he said. “From now on, governments will claim: ‘Well, Germany controls its borders too,’” so they will do the same.
The new German measures aim to stop non-EU citizens who have already applied for asylum elsewhere in the bloc from entering Germany by bus, train, or car from Schengen zone neighbors. (Currently, only third-country nationals who have invalid papers or don’t intend to file for political asylum are refused entry.) Under the new measures, the migrants would be returned to the country where they entered the Schengen area and originally applied for asylum, which are usually one of the EU’s southern external border countries, such as Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, or Spain.
German border guards would detain the foreign nationals at the border—perhaps even in a kind of jail, apparently for no longer than five weeks—until their status can be verified. Foreign nationals who had not previously applied for asylum but who claim political persecution could then enter Germany and apply for protection, which German courts would rule on at a later date.
One of the looming questions is what criteria German police would invoke to screen those parties interested in entering the country. Since not every person traveling into Germany can be stopped, “it will be people who look different, regardless of citizenship,” said Carrera, of CEPS. “A certain racial appearance will make some people suspect. This is racial profiling, and it is illegal.”
Against the background of its fierce battle in eastern Germany with the AfD, Germany’s conservative opposition, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has opted to steal the other party’s thunder by endorsing measures very much like those of the far right—and until recently entirely taboo. Claiming that the government’s measures do not go nearly far enough, the CDU argues that no people—none at all—should be permitted to enter Germany in the absence of a visa or European passport.
This would de facto end the country’s commitment to offering asylum. In order to make this flagrant violation of international law at least appear to conform to EU regulations, under the CDU plan, Germany would declare a state of emergency as a result of internal security threats. This, the CDU believes, would legalize the across-the-board rejection of unwanted third-country nationals.
The proposal also goes a gigantic step beyond the limitation of movement in the EU, effectively eviscerating the right to political asylum.
“This kind of measure, and those the government are taking, will be investigated and could come before the EU court of justice,” Carrera said. “The EU will determine whether the security concerns really justify such a breach of EU law.” Other experts have said that Germany will not be able to prove that the recent attacks or the numbers of asylum-seekers—which have fallen this year—actually threaten the state’s internal security and thus justify (or indeed, are really aided by) these measures.
One of the many problems with the new German modus operandi: Neighboring states will have to accept people refused by Germany back onto their territory—and Austria, for one, which has general elections on Sept. 29 (and where polls indicate the situation for migrants is getting even worse, with a very strong showing of the far-right Freedom Party likely) said forget it, it won’t take them.
Poland is also up arms at the prospect of traffic jams at the borders that would obstruct commercial and private transportation. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called the German move a “de facto suspension of the Schengen Agreement on a large scale.”
The Belgian daily Le Soir seems to hit the nail on the head: “With governments like this, there’s no need for the far right to be in power. The pressure of elections and the fear of extremes are causing those in power to run around like headless chickens, with migrants as the only means for decompression.”
EU expert Thu Nguyen, the deputy director of the Berlin-based Jacques Delors Centre, told Foreign Policy that unilateral decisions taken by Germany—the EU’s most populous state—are entirely unproductive. She noted that the EU’s Pact on Migration and Asylum, a set of new rules passed this year for managing migration and establishing a common asylum system at a bloc-wide level, addresses some of the concerns about immigration raised by Germany and other EU states, including by facilitating faster procedures for asylum applicants at the continent’s external borders.
After all, Germany—including the CDU’s parliamentary group in the EU, the European People’s Party (EPP)—was essential in drafting the pact, together with the 25 other EU member states. When the pact came in front of the European Parliament earlier this year, EPP parliamentarian Tomas Tobé said that “the absolute best way to help support a European migration policy is to be loyal to the whole migration pact.”

Cloud Agnostic: Achieving Flexibility and Independence in Cloud Management
As businesses increasingly migrate to the cloud, they face a critical decision: which cloud provider to choose? While AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud offer powerful platforms, the concept of "cloud agnostic" is gaining traction. Cloud agnosticism refers to a strategy where businesses avoid vendor lock-in by designing applications and infrastructure that work across multiple cloud providers. This approach provides flexibility, independence, and resilience, allowing organizations to adapt to changing needs and avoid reliance on a single provider.
What Does It Mean to Be Cloud Agnostic?
Being cloud agnostic means creating and managing systems, applications, and services that can run on any cloud platform. Instead of committing to a single cloud provider, businesses design their architecture to function seamlessly across multiple platforms. This flexibility is achieved by using open standards, containerization technologies like Docker, and orchestration tools such as Kubernetes.
Key features of a cloud agnostic approach include:
Interoperability: Applications must be able to operate across different cloud environments.
Portability: The ability to migrate workloads between different providers without significant reconfiguration.
Standardization: Using common frameworks, APIs, and languages that work universally across platforms.
Benefits of Cloud Agnostic Strategies
Avoiding Vendor Lock-InThe primary benefit of being cloud agnostic is avoiding vendor lock-in. Once a business builds its entire infrastructure around a single cloud provider, it can be challenging to switch or expand to other platforms. This could lead to increased costs and limited innovation. With a cloud agnostic strategy, businesses can choose the best services from multiple providers, optimizing both performance and costs.
Cost OptimizationCloud agnosticism allows companies to choose the most cost-effective solutions across providers. As cloud pricing models are complex and vary by region and usage, a cloud agnostic system enables businesses to leverage competitive pricing and minimize expenses by shifting workloads to different providers when necessary.
Greater Resilience and UptimeBy operating across multiple cloud platforms, organizations reduce the risk of downtime. If one provider experiences an outage, the business can shift workloads to another platform, ensuring continuous service availability. This redundancy builds resilience, ensuring high availability in critical systems.
Flexibility and ScalabilityA cloud agnostic approach gives companies the freedom to adjust resources based on current business needs. This means scaling applications horizontally or vertically across different providers without being restricted by the limits or offerings of a single cloud vendor.
Global ReachDifferent cloud providers have varying levels of presence across geographic regions. With a cloud agnostic approach, businesses can leverage the strengths of various providers in different areas, ensuring better latency, performance, and compliance with local regulations.
Challenges of Cloud Agnosticism
Despite the advantages, adopting a cloud agnostic approach comes with its own set of challenges:
Increased ComplexityManaging and orchestrating services across multiple cloud providers is more complex than relying on a single vendor. Businesses need robust management tools, monitoring systems, and teams with expertise in multiple cloud environments to ensure smooth operations.
Higher Initial CostsThe upfront costs of designing a cloud agnostic architecture can be higher than those of a single-provider system. Developing portable applications and investing in technologies like Kubernetes or Terraform requires significant time and resources.
Limited Use of Provider-Specific ServicesCloud providers often offer unique, advanced services—such as machine learning tools, proprietary databases, and analytics platforms—that may not be easily portable to other clouds. Being cloud agnostic could mean missing out on some of these specialized services, which may limit innovation in certain areas.
Tools and Technologies for Cloud Agnostic Strategies
Several tools and technologies make cloud agnosticism more accessible for businesses:
Containerization: Docker and similar containerization tools allow businesses to encapsulate applications in lightweight, portable containers that run consistently across various environments.
Orchestration: Kubernetes is a leading tool for orchestrating containers across multiple cloud platforms. It ensures scalability, load balancing, and failover capabilities, regardless of the underlying cloud infrastructure.
Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Tools like Terraform and Ansible enable businesses to define cloud infrastructure using code. This makes it easier to manage, replicate, and migrate infrastructure across different providers.
APIs and Abstraction Layers: Using APIs and abstraction layers helps standardize interactions between applications and different cloud platforms, enabling smooth interoperability.
When Should You Consider a Cloud Agnostic Approach?
A cloud agnostic approach is not always necessary for every business. Here are a few scenarios where adopting cloud agnosticism makes sense:
Businesses operating in regulated industries that need to maintain compliance across multiple regions.
Companies require high availability and fault tolerance across different cloud platforms for mission-critical applications.
Organizations with global operations that need to optimize performance and cost across multiple cloud regions.
Businesses aim to avoid long-term vendor lock-in and maintain flexibility for future growth and scaling needs.
Conclusion
Adopting a cloud agnostic strategy offers businesses unparalleled flexibility, independence, and resilience in cloud management. While the approach comes with challenges such as increased complexity and higher upfront costs, the long-term benefits of avoiding vendor lock-in, optimizing costs, and enhancing scalability are significant. By leveraging the right tools and technologies, businesses can achieve a truly cloud-agnostic architecture that supports innovation and growth in a competitive landscape.
Embrace the cloud agnostic approach to future-proof your business operations and stay ahead in the ever-evolving digital world.

The Life of The Prophet Muhammad(pbuh): Calling the Tribes to Islam, the Allegiances of Aqaba and Migration to Madinah
Migration to Madinah Starts
The allegiances and agreements made between the Muslims of Madina and our Holy Prophet (PBUH) opened a brand new arena before the Muslims. Living in their new community would allow them to talk about their beliefs openly, perform their religious duties freely, and fearlessly protect and spread their faith; the two most powerful tribes in Madina, the Aws and Kahzraj, promised to receive them with open arms, to protect them in all kinds of circumstances and not to withhold their help. It appeared as if the Sun of Islam (PBUH) would be shining with all his majesty in Madina very soon.
While the polytheists were concerned that the Muslims would move to this place of safety, our Holy Prophet (PBUH) was exerting all his efforts into making this new homeland that was rapidly embracing Islam the capital of Islam.
Mecca was in a very sensitive situation. When the polytheists heard that Allah’s Apostle (PBUH) had contracted an agreement with the Muslims of Madina, they further tortured the Muslims to a much greater extent.
Life in Mecca was like a punishment for the Muslims; it was as if the drinking water and the air were a burning fire.
The Muslims explained their troublesome and painful situation to our Holy Prophet (PBUH) and requested permission to immigrate. At first, our Holy Prophet (PBUH) indicated that permission had not been granted to him. However, he was granted permission in the following days and happily notified the Muslims of having received the approval:
“I was shown and it was made known to me that the place you will immigrate to is a city in between two black rocks and is filled with dates. Those who want to leave Mecca should go there and unite with their siblings from among the Muslims of Madina. Allah, the Exalted, has made them your siblings and Madina a home in which you will find safety and peace.”
As it is seen, when the threats and oppressions of Qurayshi polytheists on Muslims reached a point that did not allow Muslims to practice and spread Islam, the Messenger of Allah had allowed them to migrate. The following word of Hazrat Aisha expresses this state: “The believer had to migrate to Allah or His messenger for his religion because he had the fear of being prohibited from practicing his religion.”
“Then, migration, as it is sometimes expressed wrongly, is not an escape but a search. It is the search for a suitable environment for practicing the religion, which was in a point of elimination due to the threats and dangers. The religion determined its practice and application as its aim. If the conditions of the place a person lives in do not let this aim be practiced, it is a religious obligation for him to migrate from that place. The Quran does not regard those people as excused if they do not migrate and holds them responsible. They are obliged to look for a place where they can practice their religion.”
After this permission, the Messenger of Allah thought thoroughly about the act of migration, which was “a search for a suitable place to practice and spread the religion”. When it came time to immigrate, he continuously reminded the Muslims to act with caution and prudence and advised them to leave in small groups so as to not attract the polytheists’ attention.
In accordance to our Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) advice, the Muslims proceeded on their way to Madina individually and in small groups, which sometimes included only two people.
The first companion who emigrated from Mecca to Madina was Abu Salama Ibn Abdi’l-Asad.
The polytheists realized what was going on; they made the Muslims they could catch turn back. They were doing all they could in hopes that the Muslims would abandon their faith. They were separating wives from their husbands and objecting to them immigrating with their husbands. Some of the Muslims were being imprisoned. However, they did not want to kill anyone fearing that a war could break. Nonetheless, they did their best to dissuade the Muslims from immigrating by subjecting them to all kinds of unimaginable torture and cruelty. However, the Muslims had made up their mind and were determined to move to Madina regardless of the costs. They were finally able to overcome all of the obstacles and continued with their departure.
The bright horizons were smiling at them already. They had escaped from the circle of torture and oppression and were now opening their wings towards the horizon. Besides, Madina and its inhabitants were anxiously awaiting their arrival.
MIGRATION OF HAZRAT UMAR
While the other Muslims were in the process of emigrating in secret, Hazrat Umar was girding on his sword. He took his bow, arrow, and spear and went to the Kaaba. He openly circumambulated the Kaaba seven times. He bravely called out to the ringleaders of the polytheists who were present:
“I am emigrating in the way of Allah so that I can protect my religion. If one wants to leave his wife as a widow, to make his mother cry, and to have his children orphaned, then come before me on this valley!”
After this fearless cry, about twenty Muslims went towards Madina in broad daylight. None of the polytheists had any courage to track them down.
In a few months, a great percentage of Muslims had departed from Mecca to Madina. Our Holy Prophet (PBUH), Hazrat Abu Bakr, Hazrat Ali, the needy who could not afford a long journey, those who did not have the strength to endure a long crossing, and those imprisoned by the polytheists stayed behind.
Our Holy Prophet (PBUH) also had the intention to emigrate. However, he was awaiting Allah’s permission in this matter. In fact, when Hazrat Abu Bakr disclosed his wish to emigrate our Holy Prophet (PBUH) said, “Be patient. It is hoped that Allah will grant you a companion” (to emigrate with.)
THE PANIC OF POLYTHEISTS
The tribes of Aws and Khazraj greeted the Muslims who gradually immigrated to Madina immensely well. They sheltered them and provided homes for them. Married immigrants stayed at the homes of those who were married whereas single immigrants stayed at the home of Sa’d bin Haythama, who was another unmarried companion.
The polytheists of the Quraysh panicked when they saw that the Muslims who had immigrated were being sheltered, helped, and uniting with the other Muslims in Madina. Their worries increased altogether when they thought about our Holy Prophet (PBUH) also emigrating, coming to the forefront, waging a war against them, and having the power to cut off the trade route to Damascus.
Meeting at Daru’n-Nadwa
They immediately convened at Daru’n-Nadwa to discuss how they could take measures.
Daru’n-Nadwa was a residence that faced the Kaaba and belonged to one of our Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) forefathers, Qusay bin Kab. The leading figures of the Quraysh would always gather here to discuss matters and consult with one another.
They arranged to discuss the matter regarding our Holy Prophet (PBUH) and met at Dar’un-Nadwa one morning.
In the meantime, they saw a well-dressed, sharp-eyed elderly man standing in front of the door. They asked this man, “Who are you?” “I am an elder from Najid” answered the man, “I heard about this meeting so I came to explain my thoughts. I want to express my opinions regarding measures that I deem to be suitable and unsuitable!”
The Qurayshis welcomed him and said, “Alright, enter!” Actually, the old man was a devil that had entered into the form of a human.
The Terrible Decision They Made!
There were about 100 Qurayshis at the meeting however only Abu Lahab was accepted from among the Sons of Hashim so that the others would not be informed right away. They opened the topic by asking, “What kind of measures should we take in the matter regarding Muhammad?”
Some of them said, “Let us imprison him by tying him with a chain.” The devil that had entered into human form replied, “No. By God, your idea is not suitable. If you imprison him, then his companions will tread on you and pull him away. They will advance with his propaganda and indoctrination and prevail over you. Think of another measure.” Upon this, some of them said, “Let us drive him away from our community and country! After he separates from us, have him go wherever he wants.”
The old man spoke again, “No, by God, your thought is not in good taste. Do you not see that his message and the sweetness and beauty of his words take command in the hearts of the people? If you drive him away, he will circulate among the Arab tribes and then rule over them. Afterwards he will tread over you and order you to do what he wants. For that reason you should think of something else!” At last, Abu Jahl got the chance to speak, “By God, I thought of a measure that none of you would have been able to think of.”
They asked, “what is it?”
Abu Jahl disclosed his idea:
“We do not have any other choice but to kill him. For that reason, we will choose a strong young man from each tribe. Then we will give each of them a sharp sword. They will all strike and kill him at once. That way, we will be freed from him and no one will know who killed him. When it happens in this way, the Hashimis will not be able to risk having a battle with all the other tribes and will consent to receiving blood money whether they like it or not. We will pay off the blood money and resolve the matter.” The devil that had entered the form of the old man came forth and said, “This is the correct idea and the most suitable solution.”
The others accepted Abu Jahl’s view and dispersed.

Sugar and Sorrow - a Malevolent mini-muffin
A lovely evening for the Brilings to fly.
A needed moment of downtime with an ally.
Dagon brings the booze.
Part of the Surrogate series. Written with @sepiabandensis
AO3
——-
He’d almost forgotten about them this year.
His special crop, his sparkling migration; they slept much of the year in their tiny, soft nests, curled up like cute little bugs, but he’d always made time to watch their migration when they woke.
How could he not? It was like sparkles fluttering in a widening cone from the hives into the sun, beautiful; and they alway tipped him off to places in his city that weren’t working as planned.
Sugar and sorrow. That’s what they ate; unerringly, their glittering cloud would settle on various neighborhoods or parks or buildings, spooky and lovely with their big eyes and curling tentacles, and that’s when he knew where changes needed to be made, or punishment dished out.
Well, they didn’t do that today. Today, they landed on him. And what a swarm it was, turning parts of his cloak iridescent-shimmering black in mottled patches, tiny tentacles trying to curl around his fingers, around the spokes of his crown, around the frayed threads of his cloak.
“Well, I’ll be damned. Think they like you,” Dagon said, laughing. He held out a finger for one and it nimbly ignored him with an almost offended sniff, instead doubling back to land on Hastur’s hood.
“They do,” Hastur said mournfully, making no move at all to send them away. He split the ends of some thicker tentacles so they could latch on, all in a row. “This is their home, most of the year. I created it for them. You’ll never see such a perfect flock.”
They were silent, fluttering, seemingly very content to settle all over him. Indeed, a few began to look drunk, wide eyes blinking slowly, swaying a little against their tight grips.
Dagon took it all in. The drooping flowered branches, the stained glass windows. “Colorful.”
Hastur sighed, turning one large hand so more could settle in his palm.
Dagon frowned.
Then he got an idea. An awful idea. Dagon got a wonderful, awful idea. “Hey,” he said. “Wanna try my rum?”
“…I shouldn’t,” Hastur said, watching as a dozen of his little treasures flocked onto his palm and immediately began competing for space. One fell off, spiraling down about a foot before her little wings caught and she fluttered back up, instead landing on the sleeve of his robe. “There is much for me yet to do this evening, after all.”
Dagon grinned, all teeth sharp and showing. “Tell you what. You help me drink my rum, and I’ll help you do whatever you’re trying to do out there. Kill people in your name, make deals, whatever. It’ll be fun.” And he flopped heavily into the stone seat across from Hastur. “These things are like sea angels.”
“They’re called Brilings,” said Hastur with the annoyance that accompanies assumed knowledge. “One of my Dreamers created them.”
“Huh,” said Dagon, who didn’t truck with Dreamers often (they tended to disappear when things were getting interesting). “You want ‘em fed?”
“What? Of course I do.”
“They’re feeding off you?”
Hastur hesitated. “Off my… grief. They also eat sugar.”
Dagon plunked a thick, brown, sea-clay jug right on the table. “Plenty of sugar in rum.”
Hastur hesitated. “Maybe just a little. Until they’ve had their fill and presented their flock at the setting of the sun.”
“Sure,” Dagon lied, and got to pouring.
#
The Brilings dispersed a bit with the application of rum to Hastur’s grief-stricken soul, but quite a lot of them still clung to his cloak as he took another swig off the jug. “She’s doing so well with her Welsh,” he slurred, completely oblivious to the fact that at some point he’d decided leaning on Dagon was both necessary and correct. “A natural. A prodigy. D’you know when I knew she was a prodigy?”
“When’s zat?” said Dagon, who was feeling pretty okay, and had his webbed feet up on the table.
“When she was two,” Hastur said, conspiratorial in everything but volume, as he didn’t seem capable of dipping below a moderately loud speaking voice. “Two! Many humans cannot even speak at that age. She played the harp, and could sing, and—and. And I decided to keep her.” He let out a low chuckle, tentacles curling around the jug. “And I didn’t even make her that on purpose. She was marvelous just as she was. Exceptional!”
“You know, I can see that,” Dagon said. “I don’t care about kids most of the time, but she’s okay. I like her. Hey—you did good by her, you know that?” He patted Hastur’s arm (ignoring the way the Brilings avoided his hand, only to land back on Hastur again). “I gotta ask, though. I gotta ask. Like. What’s the plan here? Even god-kids don’t live that long. But you, you always got plans, so I—“
“She’s good. She’s so good,” Hastur said, his voice turning wistful. “Too good. Too good for me, I think. But… Plans. I have lots of them, yes. Many I will not see come to fruition. But she will be safe.”
Dagon made a face and held the jug over Hastur’s head so Hastur could manifest a mouth that wasn’t blubbering to drink as he poured. “Naw.”
“Bah,” Hastur said, a maw working its way past his hood. “You wouldn’t understand. Soon she will be ten; and after that, eleven, and then twelve… But I will sit down with her. Explain her options. It will be her choice, immortality or—or what have her. She will be a goddess. A queen! Revered and loved for all of her days.” He let out a low, unhappy sound, and six-dozen new Brilings immediately swarmed him.
“Sure,” Dagon said. “Won’t be safe, though.” He poured some rum down his throat, head tilted back. “Think if you tried to make her safe, that one, she’d chew through the walls.”
Hastur gasped. “Safety is—safety is not locking her up! No. She must choose. She needs to be safe on her own, to stand against—against—”
“Wha?”
“Against!” Hastur insisted, a tentacle clumsily gesturing to nothing in particular. “I cannot protect her from—from that! You know!”
Dagon nodded wisely. “Nobody can. You know, it… that’s one of the reasons I don’t keep ‘em close like that. You can’t keep ‘em safe.” He shrugged. “It was all long ago, anyway.”
One lone Briling fluttered onto his head and perched between his fins like a bird.
“Ha,” Hastur said, pointing at it. Two Brilings decided to perch on his outstretched tentacle. “I can’t… I can’t protect her how I want to. But I can help make her ready. So she doesn’t need me.”
Dagon considered that for a long time. He drank some more (and ensured Hastur did, too). “Think it’s too late for that,” he finally said. “That kid loves the ground you slither on.”
Hastur sniffled.
Dagon sniffled. Two more Brilings changed alliance.
“Had one once,” Dagon said. “Wasn’t even mine. Hydra’s forgotten one, but it weren’t what she wanted, so I… dunno. I tried. Bad idea. Heartbreak all around.”
It took Hastur a moment to catch that. “You… grieved a child?”
“Don’t do that no more.”
Hastur leaned in a little more. “How did they die?”
For one perilous moment, it seemed Dagon might answer.
Instead, he snorted, guffawed, and said, “Didn’t get taken out by a boat, I’ll tell you that!”
Hastur choked, which made Dagon laugh more, which made Hastur laugh finally, and they leaned one each other, cackling like old men pretending to be gods.
“Boat!” Hastur proclaimed.
“Ooh, I’m Cthulhu, I’m gonna come up all scary outta the ocean and rule the world!” Dagon laughed like a drunken tuba.
“Oh no, my nemesis… a canoe! ” Hastur cried, and they laughed so hard that both of them ended up drooling.
The Brilings (quite a few still clearly inebriated) rose silently and perfectly, following the rising laughter into the sky. They glittered and flashed colors, seemingly heading in a widening cone right into the larger sun, and the sky sparkled for hours after they were no longer in sight.
