Juneteenth: Faith and Freedom (2022)
Pastor, educator, and descendant Rasool Berry examines how Christianity had been both weaponized against the enslaved in Texas, and [was] also a source of strength as they navigated different stages of liberation from Juneteenth through today. Berry connects with various experts, scholars, and historians in the state to unpack the suppressive use of faith — especially through the distribution of a “slave Bible” with redactions of any sections or scriptures pertaining to freedom and rebellion. The documentary tackles common but incisive questions, including why Black Americans would adopt Christianity when it was the faith of the enslavers who controlled them and how that same religion became an even stronger source of reprieve and validation as enslavement morphed into economic and legal bondage.

btw there was actually an art project led by three students (Ail Hwang, Hae-Ryaan Jeon and Ghung Ki Park) in Germany to install colorful window panes onto an electrical transmission tower to create a stained glass mosaic effect, called "Leuchtturm" ("lighthouse") and even such a simple effect is dazzling

here’s what I learned in 2024, having been chronically, painfully ill most of the year:
it’s not bad to have New Year’s Resolutions. I myself have a bunch. however.
if you’re feeling like the only way out of your current situation is to scrabble and struggle desperately and Try Harder and Try Harder, that will only get you so far.
you have built-in limitations and there are powers & circumstances outside your sphere of control which will foil your plans.
but do you know Whose plans are never foiled? do you know Who is the power outside all spheres?
I have learned when I ask God to “help me get everything done that I need to get done today,” to make sure I am asking for what I really need to get done, and not what I think I need to get done.
I always get done what I needed to get done that day according to God’s will. even when that turns out to be nothing but praying that I will.
don’t burn yourself out depending on your own scrappy willpower to get somewhere or achieve something. and don’t waste energy despairing about your limitations. God has already decreed the direction in which your life will go, and how quickly it will go there. He knows what you truly need and will provide it without fail.

One of the dumbest things about the Bible is that it claims that the Word of God is clear. No it’s fucking not, if it was clear we wouldn’t have different sects of Christianity and people wouldn’t be disagreeing over what the Bible is trying to say.
I’d also like to mention, how difficult the Bible is to read when you have certain conditions like neurodivergency or intellectual disabilities. If the Bible was clear in the supernatural way they claim, neurodivergent people (like me) and people with intellectual disabilities would also be able to understand it just fine. God did make neurodivergent and intellectually disabled people right? Tell me how I’m supposed to learn God’s word when God never made things clear to me when I prayed and asked for guidance.

The way Kai changes is how boys often change as they grow up and are indoctrinated into the patriarchy. As small children, they're not so different from girls, and can easily be close friends with girls and enjoy the same things. But as preteens, they learn to dismiss those things as childish and inferior, and they become aggressive (Kai kicking over the roses), tease and bully girls (his treatment of Gerda), disrespect women (interrupting and mocking Gerda's grandmother), care only about showing off their strength (tying his sled onto the Snow Queen's sleigh) or their intellect (his obsession with math), and lose touch with their emotions (his indifference to the cold). The solution is for Kai to reunite with his feminine side, embodied by Gerda.
A more gender-neutral viewpoint is that it's less about masculinity and more about growing up. The glass shards make Kai see only the flaws in everything, which corresponds to the moodiness of adolescence, and/or to losing childhood innocence, becoming more aware of the world's flaws, and becoming jaded as a result. He also becomes too eager to be seen as "mature," dismissing anything "childish" and caring only about "smart" and "important" things. Gerda, by contrast, is able to grow up without losing her childhood idealism, faith, or sense of wonderment, and in the end she helps Kai to be "young at heart" too.
It might also be just a story of "heart" vs. "mind" and the importance of uniting them. Gerda represents the heart, with her roses, storybooks, spirituality, and affection, while Kai represents the intellect with his mathematical and scientific knowledge. At first they're happily united, as they should be, but then the mirror shards cut Kai off from his emotions and make him nothing but a cold, mocking intellectual. Thus the point of the story is to reunite the mind with the heart to restore balance.
It could also be a metaphor for toxic perfectionism. The glass shards amplify Kai's sense of all the flaws in the world, and he only finds beauty in the geometrical perfection of snowflakes and of the Snow Queen's ice palace. Yet in the end, thanks to Gerda, he realizes that "perfection" is cold and lifeless, and that flawed though humans and living things may be, it's only in them that warmth and vitality are found.
Last but not least is the mental health interpretation. The effect of the mirror shards is like depression. Kai sees only the negative in everything, loses interest in everything he used to enjoy, and finally, in the Snow Queen's palace, he loses his ability to feel anything at all. His rescue by Gerda can represent the healing from depression that loved ones' care and support can bring.
Which of these interpretations is your personal favorite? Or if you think of another, please share it!

wait do you believe in hell as eternal conscious torment? (im curious bc that debate has been a crux of my own journey w faith & christianity)
I believe in hell as eternal disconnection from God or more precisely as defined by the Catechism a "state of definitive self-exclusion from communion with God and the blessed" (CCC 1033). How that would look like i have no idea but i do know that tearing yourself apart from the one and only source of life, love, happiness, fulfilment, goodness, and everything that is good would absolutely be the worst torment imaginable, or rather well, unimaginable. And i do know God would hate to have His beloved children be in this state. I hope with all my heart that hell is completely empty, i wouldn't wish it upon anyone and i mean anyone
Oh and since you mentioned a debate, can you tell me more about it? Cause i'm not sure what you're refering to and i'd love to learn more! God bless you anon and best wishes for your journey with faith!

komaeda wouldnt be catholic he would be gnostic christian i refuse to believe in a context where he is christian specifically that he wouldn’t believe there is a lesser god (which is in control of reality and is despair) compared to the true god that is a personification of the abstract (hope) and quite literally unfathomable. sorry i feel really strongly about philosophy and that’s tied heavily into religion due to metaphysics so i had to say it
that's fair. i just went catholic for the aesthetics

#ive had a pretty good idea since before i started at university and i could've been getting paid for it all this time if i wasn't busy doing#the érettségi before the application deadline so i never pursued it because also the more i thought about it the more pointless it seemed#but i just said to my mum 'the romans brought christianity to the british isles' and she said 'huh?' and then she said that i dont have to#write a phd right now and i can just compare the texts im thinking about and that'll be plenty i dont have to do the history of them#and that does seem more doable. and i can bring india into it and also the shakers. and that should tide me over#but i hate my own writing so much i cant make myself not sound capricious in my essays and i get hung up on technicalities all the time#and then inevitably do stupid wordplay and get all coy with it. i just need to be genuine about it and write about this thing and that's it#and i need to email boldizsár. sorry boldizsár i have all sorts of things i hope you're not tired of me#but also i have tons of ideas but when i start to think whether they could work the answer is always no#ill try to write a thesis proposal in the next few days and see where that gets me and if i can write it (1200 words) i can probably write#a thesis. and then ill have committed and i wont be in 153563 minds about this and i can close all my tabs in my browser and ill know joy#once again#asks#thank you so much for this ask this is such a good technique!!!#ref
