Infinite Tech Witchwarper (Witchwarper Alternate Class Feature)

I do love a gadgeteer hero, someone who always has the right equipment for the job on hand, even when it doesn’t always make sense.

An interesting subtype of the gadgeteer hero, however, is the “arsenal” hero. Typically a “battle mage” of some kind, their whole gimmick is that they have a weapon and/or armor set for every situation, often conjuring them to their hands to replace whatever armament they previously held or wore.

And with the witchwarper, a spellcaster that literally calls upon objects and energies from alternate realities, it only makes sense that there would be some among them that utilize their talents in such a way!

I doubt that this specialization would manifest by accident, so I imagine that those that wield this power trained themselves to focus on weapons and armaments when they tap into the possibilities of other worlds and realities. Perhaps they are soldiers or mercenaries, or they desperately wished for a weapon to defend themselves when they were in danger, and their power awakened and answered.

Either way, their gifts have given them a way to answer any question that their foes and the hazards around them may ask.

With an expenditure of magical energy, these mages can conjure a suit of light armor (with upgrades if resolve is also spent), a basic melee weapon, or a sidearm. Though these armaments may resemble familiar models, they are extradimensional in nature and as such the skill of the mage and the amount of energy they expended determines their damage output and defensive capabilities, allowing them to tailor the armor with the upgrades they need, or the weapons with the damage type and special properties they need.

The greater the magical energy they expend, the more potent their creations become. Armor gains elemental resistances, additional upgrade slots, greater durability. Meanwhile, weapons gain critical hit effects, additional properties, and increases to their damage output.

With this specialization, this version of the witchwarper is less a battlefield control specialist and more a secondary combatant able to tailor their gear to the situation at hand, especially if you’re using the enhanced version of the class that gets a lot of extra uses of infinite worlds. I recommend combat feats to flesh out their ability to stand alongside more combat-focused classes, as well as spells that can hamper and damage foes to make hammering them hard with your conjured weapons as well as your more real mainstays easier. From there, make a list of useful armor upgrades so you can quickly pick them out when going on the defensive.

I said before that these weapons and armor may resemble familiar models  despite using a level-generated stat line, but they don’t have to if you do not wish. You might wield armor that resembles medieval designs, or weapons that function but are very different in terms of design aesthetic, such as an electrical pistol that is accompanied by deafening peals of thunder when fired, or a staff that bleeds flame along it’s length. Feel free to be creative with it!

Hoping to starve them out of advanced resources, the Jolin Corporation blockaded the planet in hopes of quelling the copaxi revolts at their facilities. However, they sorely underestimated the flexibility of the coral-folk. Not only have their biotechnicians begun replicating the advanced tech of the outsiders in biotech form, but more than a few copaxi guerillas have a knack for warping reality, conjuring living weapons from their imagination to fight the company’s occupation.

In order to learn about the mysterious weapon-conjuring mercenary the party has repeatedly encountered, they need to sneak into a server room owned by the corporation that he seems to be connected to. Doing so means braving the automated defenses, including a serpentine hybrid tech guardians, an arcane asp!

The recent string of killings that have occurred seem to have no connection at first, but as one looks into the details, one begins to realize that the murder weapons are all strange and unique devices, leading the investigators to conclude that the wielder must be a tinkering weaponsmith, have raided a warehouse of experimental designs, or perhaps strangest of all, is making them up as they go.

she is literally the unintentional glue that keeps holding and pushing caitvi together lol. pretty much her every attempt at “getting” vi back just keeps putting them in positions where they end up together, making them bond faster and longer, and where they (vi) are separated from jinx.

she literally just does it to herself and i’m so tired of cait and/or vi getting the blame for jinx’s actions. it’s not their fault she wants to act like a damn fool 💀

So let's talk about my favorite arcane subject... historical TV ratings! In this case, historical Gilmore Girls ratings in the aughts.

As a reminder, everything discussed here will be in the 18-49 demo preferred by advertisers. Also, the WB/CW were less universally available than the other networks, so their numbers were lower.

2000-2001

In the debut season of Gilmore Girls, the highest rated show was Survivor, with a demo rating of 16.9.

As you can see, all WB shows are towards the bottom of the chart. Gilmore Girls had a 2.5 demo rating, 8th in the network and 127th total out of 157 shows. The top rated show on the WB was 7th Heaven, with a demo rating of 4.4.

So respectable but not a smash hit.

Why was the show on several times a week? Well, it originally aired on Thursday, during the same time slot as Friends (5th ranked with a 12.6 demo rating) so the network wanted to give it another shot. During that first season, they used to air a recap after the first half of the show in case people switched over after watching Friends.

2001-2002

The highest rated show overall was Friends, with a 15.0 demo rating.

Ah, season 2. Jess Mariano enters the scene and the show starts to develop its core identity as Love Triangle Central. It rises to third ranked on the network (bested by 7th Heaven and Smallville) and 115th overall and goes up to a 3.23 demo rating.

Oh, the power of a bad boy who can read. He will transfix many for decades to come.

2002-2003

The highest ranked show overall was CSI with a 16.1 demo rating.

Season 3 is the last season we have Jess full-time and the only Literati season. We also briefly enjoy the company of Twilight Dad. The show maintains it's popularity but nothing much changes: it's still outranked by 7th Heaven and Smallville, goes a little lower in rank overall to 121th overall, and maintains a 3.23 demo rating.

Gilmore Girls: Beginnings was a time slot where they aired episodes from S1 on Sunday nights. The show was not yet syndicated and streaming didn't exist yet: you couldn't buy DVDS until 2004. This was the only way to see old episodes. Even so, it wasn't that popular.

We lose the boyfriends at the end of the season, and things take a turn for the worse.

2003-2004

American Idol was the top rated show with a 10.7 demo rating.

Season 4 is the season of Single Rory, who ASP tells us we should adore more than the boyfriends.

Unfortunately, ASP also chose to give her scintillating plotlines about urine mints, arguing over a study tree, and begging for attention from a guy she meets in the laundry room. Lorelai's time is mostly taken up by Jason Stiles and his fascinating insurance saga. The viewers were bored. The show slipped to 6th in rank on the network and 128th overall, lost almost half of its viewers, and went down to a 1.7 in the demo rating.

ASP regrouped, brought the boyfriends back in, got rid of Jason, and finally hooked Luke and Lorelai up. The episodes near the end of the season are considered some of the best of the series. The show allegedly was close to getting canceled.

Quality wise, I think there are a lot of nice episodes here and there, but overall the season drags because there are far more interesting things going on with the supporting characters than the mains. Jess is as emo as he ever is and his hair is fabulous.

2004-2005

The top rated show for the year was American Idol with an 11.1 demo rating.

The show was on an upswing in season 5. We have to put up with Dean for a while, but Rory's attention strays (again) to yet another bad boy who can read and Logan brings a lot more energy and more interesting storylines to the show. We also have the glory days of Luke and Lorelai as a couple.

The show rises to #1 on the WB, finally outranking 7th Heaven and Smallville. It ranks 120th overall and the demo rating goes up to 2.0. The show's ratings will never be as high as they were during the Jess seasons.

Jess is not in season 5, as he was busy moving to Philly and becoming awesome. Milo shows up on American Dreams as yet another bad boy, yet his fresh-faced love interest in that show seizes the moment and not only fucks him but runs away with him, too. Meg Pryor at least knows how to take advantage of her opportunities.

American Dreams had slightly better ratings than Gilmore Girls but because it was a network show (and had insanely expensive music rights) it was canceled.

2005-2006

The top rated show (again) was American Idol with a demo rating of 12.9

Oh, season 6. The season of disappointment, thwarted dreams, and Jess Mariano reinventing himself as a hipster dreamboat.

The show remained popular, tying for first place in the network with Smallville and Beauty and the Geek (the reality show version of The Big Bang Theory). The demo rating stayed at 2.0 and the show ranked 110th overall.

Supernatural (the show Jared is most known for) debuts in 5th with a 1.6 demo rating. It will become quite the phenomenon over the next 15 years and spawn many stans of its own.

Milo's show The Bedford Diaries isn't too popular, but he also films the Rocky sequel and is cast in Heroes. He's on to bigger and better things, as is Jess, who is now a stable, successful author and business owner and hotter than ever, while Rory is stuck in a holding pattern of indecisiveness and bad decisions. Oh, well. The population of Philly awaits, son. Start your slut era in style.

2006-2007

Y'all will be shocked to find out that the top rated show of the year again was American Idol again with a 12.3 demo rating.

Oh, season 7. The new writers tried, I guess. ASP had pretty much destroyed Luke and Lorelai as a couple and also set her sights on almost every other character, too. So we're left with a devastated Luke, the specter of Christopher on the horizon, and Rory once again embroiled in love triangle drama.

The WB and UPN had combined into a single network, so the show has more competition, but I think a lot of people just gave up.

The show went down to its S4 series low of 1.7, ranked 4th behind America's Next Top Model and Beauty and the Geek. It ranked 122nd for the year and was canceled. There were negotiations for a 13-episode season 8 (with Matt Czuchry as a regular cast member) but they fell through. I think if that season had happened, Luke and Lorelai would have gotten married/had a baby and Rory and Logan would have been endgame. We would not have seen Jess again, because Milo was too busy elsewhere.

Heroes was the 7th ranked show overall that year and the top rated show on NBC. It has a demo rating of 6.4, over three times as high as Gilmore Girls and almost twice as high as Gilmore Girls at its height. There was a ton of water-cooler chat about the show during that time: it was pretty much everywhere.

There's been a lot of chatter on this site about ASP having big plans for Jess in S7, that she was going to have Rory cheat on Logan with Jess again and Milo only said no because he hated the new writers. There's never been any indication any of that is true because why wouldn't he move on to another job with more money, prestige, and attention? It was wise of him to leave and better for both Milo and Jess in the end.

So what have we learned here, other than that Frazzled has weird hobbies? Well, mainly that season 4 almost killed the show, the show's glory days truly were the first three seasons, and that I was not alone in rage quitting the show in 2006. All good lessons to keep in mind.

New Chapter: Sunstriding

My AU King Kael’thas Sunstrider fanfic has a new chapter! How in the world is Jaina Proudmoore going to get out of the fake engagement Prince Kael’thas tricked her into, once upon a time? She has a plan to get that ring off her finger. But, as usual, nerdy Kael’thas has an ever bigger plan.

Chapter 22: Sunstriding

Lady Jaina Proudmore had a wonderful portrait of Kael’thas in her dorm room. He was smiling, his blonde hair fell over his red robes. It would have been from some promotional material the Highborne sent around to the Human kingdoms.

So, you see, it’s not like Jaina went out of her way to get the portrait. And there were plenty of dart holes, knife wounds and burn marks on it.

Pained, Jaina’s Night Elf roommate, lay with her feet up on a couch arm, spinning an arcane crystal on her fingertip.

“These things are nasty, Jaina. I can’t believe other Elves out there actually eat them.”

Jaina had her hand up on a modified jeweler’s table. Actually, since her enforced engagement, Jaina had discreetly removed her furniture in the night and replaced it with half a jeweler’s workshop. Strong metal files, corkscrew metal shavings, bits of smashed gemstones… Jaina reasoned that she wasn’t actually seeing Kael’thas romantically, so he wasn’t going to ask to see the ring he’d put on her finger. So, she used a lot of her free time fiddling with it.

“That man is a great, big, fat ass.”

“Did you say asp? Like the snake?”

“Is that what I said?!” Jaina looked up from where she was gently tightening a vice around her ring finger.

“Well, I’m not sure what you were trying to say, but ‘asp’ is what came out. I hear they’re noble creatures. Though, it was a nice try at an insult.”

“Feh.”

Once Jaina was done with positiong her hand and tightening the ring so that it was still, she relaxed her right arm and rested it on the small silver platform she’d welded beneath it.

“I can’t believe you studied up on jewelcrafting just to be free of him.”

Kraken: What haunts your muse?

For Casial, its the Shore. Of all the things she survived, the Broken Shore is what haunts her the most. She still isn’t comfortable around warlocks with demons out or demon hunters. Fel magic terrifies her and she constantly has nightmares of the torment and torture she was put through. While she has tried to work through it, and improve. It is slow going.

Asphodel on the other hand is haunted by the void. She doesn’t fear void magic, she studies it, she goes out of her way to learn how to control it or manipulate it. Asp has put herself through so many painful and complex rituals and experiments to nullify corruption even within her. But, it will always haunt her. The way that it almost took her twice, and how it has corrupted and taken so much from her. Its constant toying with someone who she cares deeply about. It makes her maybe a bit paranoid over it.

Lya is haunted by arcane magic, which is terrible when you’re adopted into an elven family that uses it A LOT. After what happened at Theramore and seeing the aftermath she grew to fear arcane. It was years before she could even walk through the mage district. Portals still get her sick and she has to close her eyes to go through them, but she’ll do it. She’s attempting to get over her fear, but big displays of arcane still throw her back to that day where she watched yet another home get ripped from her in an instant.

Rua ain’t haunted by shit. I mean, jokes aside. The girl was raised in a half-conscious state where she never knew if she was walking around her home or if she was in one of her father’s ‘training’ nightmares. She just, at this point doesn’t let anything bother her to the point it can be viewed as ‘haunting’. I would say the closest to it, is realize just how different her life with her family was compared to the normal person.

Forgiven (Prompt 07)

“I don’ understan’! How’s this m’fault?!” Llew gasped as he bowed away from a swiping claw. Yet more Qiqirin poured into the clearing, swarming as the rats they resembled. He tried not to scrunch his nose too much as it was filled with smoke and burning fur. Llew ended them cleanly when his warnings went unheeded. Bullets between their eyes, solidly in their chests, aim unerring but for the one who took a slug to the side of their long face. He wasn’t the sturdiest and being tackled had a way of throwing a wrench into an otherwise coordinated set of movements. Meanwhile, flames roared to life behind him and the squeaking voices of the Qiqirin became even higher screeches.  At least he was decent and humane about it, not like the pale pyromaniac at his back. “Whatever you did in the Librarium was as a stone into water. Let us merely hope this is the last ripple you’ve caused.”  He flinched as the ground rocked underfoot, a combustive boom brought him to hissing. “It ain’ like highwaymen an’ poachers aren’ a-plenty!” His hands were shaking as he slipped another six rounds into their respective slots in the wheel. They never shook this hard. He leaned back, bracing his weight against the redhead as he kicked out at an approaching ratman, leveling the revolver’s barrel a heartbeat later. He wasn’t sure what was louder, the explosive magic at his back or the firearm burning his palm. “I’m still blaming you and whatever damnable luck has forsaken you.” 

Later his ass was planted on the single dry bit of ground for probably a malm and cigarette holding residence between his lips. Unlucky? No, that couldn’t be right. He was the luckiest man in the world, by most reckonings. Or at least one of them. Feathers probably came close. Then there was Helios, who he was rightly certain had some obscure god’s favor. Speaking of... ‘Well, what’d I do, huh?’ he thought as he leaned back, trying to regard something so far away and yet so close. ‘Did I piss You off?’ He closed his eyes, listening, but only heard Faustoix nearby, pilfering corpses. Or whatever it was he did with them. Llew didn’t ask. There was magic involved, sometimes, that much he knew, but it seemed personal. His curiosity, so often insatiable when it came to the arcane, was exhausted when it came to Faustoix.

He sighed and leveraged himself up, wiped his hands on his trousers. Might as well get Buttercup ready to go while the redhead finished up. He headed toward the massive destrier, who had since calmed after the ambush. Much of which was spent cowering, fluffing herself up to full size, and kicking at any Qiqirin that got too close to her. Oddly, though, she didn’t seem to startle at gunfire. Then again, sounds, in general, seemed to have little effect on her at all. Faustoix mostly directed her with his heels, the reins, and a series of contact gestures.

Was she deaf?

Llew hummed experimentally as he approached the bird, earning himself a cheery trill in greeting. He sat before her, patting her beak and thrumming every song he knew regardless if she could hear it. At least he did until he caught movement in his periphery. As it slid past he tried to conceal his movements, lest Buttercup catch sight of the creature and panic.

A type of asp, from his reckoning, nigh unmistakable for its short, round head -caught briefly as it moved through the grass- and bold, diamond patterning. There his brain stalled. Most viper species in the Shroud that he’d encountered were solid black or various browns barred with greens. Keeled scales told him he wasn’t wrong on the family, but none had the black-and-gold coloration this one displayed as it passed. 

Llew’s hands shook as he reached for Buttercup’s head, rubbing at her crest feathers, scratching beneath her chin. She hadn’t seemed to notice, despite how oddly bright the gilt serpent had been.

Faustoix claimed to have seen nothing when asked as well. Llew hummed dune songs as they hit the road once more, thoughts turned to omens.

A Web Development Master Post

I’ve spent the last two years working as a professional developer. I didn’t go to college for this, and just about everything I know I’ve either taught myself or learned from looking through other people’s source code as we research if we want to pull a project into our code base. I love it, and I have done some things I never would have expected from myself at the start. But before we get into any of those, I wanted to put together a list of resources I wish I had or worked with more fully when I was sitting in my job interview two years ago. Think of this as part resources on how to learn some of these skills, some recommendations on applications to incorporate into your workflow, and a few opinions on some of the other common applications that you’re welcome to heartily disagree with.

First things first lets get a few resources together, and for those of you who are already familiar with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP, none of these will be a surprise. It might be worth your while to jump ahead.

Starting out, W3 schools will probably be pretty omnipresent for help. They have tutorials for HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, ASP, and many other web technologies. They pride themselves in being the largest web developer site, and unfortunately that has a downside. They don’t always update all of their articles to the most current specifications. This is a wonderful resource, as they do a good job of explaining a lot of these concepts in a beginner friendly way, but when you’re ready for nitty-gritty details, it’s almost always best to go with a more specialized developer resource.

CSS is a powerful and flexible tool. Every day I see projects where developers have pushed it to new heights, but sometimes it’s a little arcane too. Well the wizards over at CSS-Tricks have collected a large number of articles and tutorials that explain everything from how z-index works to how to use newer layout-centric rules like Flexbox or Grid. If a CSS rule is misbehaving, 9 times out of 10, I can find a clear and concise reason on this site, and more importantly, I find many recommendations on how I can achieve the same effect differently.

Speaking of Flexbox, Flexbox Froggy is a one-note kind of resource, but it teaches all of the core concepts behind flexbox, and it can also teach CSS savvy managers why moving to a new layout methodology would benefit your work flow.

Mozilla’s developers have been at this game a long time, and their resources are next to none. In my opinion, this collection does not do much help a beginner understand, but the trade-off is that once you’re over that initial hurdle, the information you’re looking for is almost always only a few clicks away. This is the first, and often the last, place I go whenever I’m looking to solve a weird JavaScript bug that the rest of the internet is too clever to have encountered, (or to explain why only IE9 is seeing it).

I know PHP isn’t a popular language right now, but it’s powerful, it’s flexible, and it’s still the primary language of the largest and most popular CMS on the planet, for better or worse, WordPress. Especially if you’re going to work freelance, you owe it to yourself to at least be familiar with PHP, and this will be your best friend. It’s no nonsense, and not beginner friendly, but it’s clear, and the comments on the articles are often as helpful as the articles themselves.

Speaking of working in freelance (or even for a firm like I do), I have my own opinions about the way WordPress works, but you’re going to be doing projects in WordPress, and you aren’t going to be able to accomplish them without this. I have a small problem with the way functions and parameters are explained (it isn’t always easy to differentiate how one calls a function manually, or if it is called by filters, or how it is different from they three other functions named roughly the same thing), but I do know that the WordPress core developers work very hard, so there is always a method to the madness, even if you don’t have the key to see it.

When you get to the debugging stage, you’re going to become familiar with Stack Overflow pretty fast, as it almost always dominates the first few google results for a problem. Now, I’ve had developers try to scare me away from using Stack Overflow because it is open for beginners and experts, and sometimes it’s hard to tell quality of answers, but I strongly disagree with that. While it’s true you should always look cautiously at using someone else’s code right out of the box, there are a lot of members of the community that go out of their way to explain what the code is doing, and those are the answers you should be looking for. You don’t have to use their code, but if you can understand why you had the problem in the first place, you grow as a developer, and now have the tools to solve the problem. Stack Overflow is a big part of the Open Source community, so it’s always nice to give back at least as much as you take, so if you see a question you have the answer to, feel free to share.

Eventually, you’re going to run into a project where you need a plugin developed by someone else, either because you don’t yet have the knowledge or you don’t have the time, but the client needs the functionality. 9 times out of 10 you’ll find what you need on GitHub, and honestly, you should be getting together your own GitHub with plugins and projects of your own. No matter how single purpose they may be, you’d be surprised how useful things can be in very specific situations. GitHub, like Stack Overflow, is a big part of the Open Source community, so it’s always nice to give back when you can. Make suggestions or report problems you have with any projects you pull, and in doing so you’ll make the community a better place.

Applications for Windows Based Developers

Now, for the next section let’s get into some tools. I love gaming, so I have a Windows computer at home. I don’t really know why we’re wasting money on a Windows license at work, but we are so I can mirror the full stack in both locations. Here’s what I use.

When I first started, my boss insisted I use Dreamweaver for everything. I have nothing against Adobe, and their products are quality, but Dreamweaver was way more trouble than it was worth. Everything I cared about from Dreamweaver I can do in this free and Open Source program, with some extra functionality I find it extremely hard to mimic in Dreamweaver. Notepad++ is fast, stable, and hugely extendable. If you’re doing this as a full time job, I strongly recommend switching to a dark theme for the sake of your eyes. Blackboard is among my favorites (unless you’re trying to write Python). I also really love its macro functionality, I have a couple of re-used DOM structures programmed in there right now as well as my multi-line comment format.

Arguably, the best part of Dreamweaver is the built in FTP client that lets you push changes directly to the server, but set Notepad++ as your primary editor in this, and suddenly you even have that feature, as this will sync temp folders back to the server. This is probably the best FTP client I’ve seen on Windows, with full support for SFTP and SSH (built on PuTTY) with all sorts of encryption and authentication options. It’s also hugely configurable and fairly dependable. If you’re working on a remote server using a Windows machine, this is probably how you should be accessing the file system.

I hope that as a web developer you don’t have to learn to be a server administrator, but as a web developer I am telling you you’ll probably have to learn at least a little bit about Unix/Linux server administration, as they are by far the most popular web server stacks out there, and you’ll be controlling them with an SSH client at some points, even if a web interface is available. This is a great one, with all sorts of authentication options, so if (like us) you know you need root access to a server remotely, but you don’t like the idea of protecting that with just a simple password, you can set up Public/Private key pairs with encryption passphrases.

Let me be clear on this: WAMP, which stands for Windows Apache, PHP, MySQL, is great to have. It’s good for training, it’s good for prototyping tools without having to wait for a virtualized server to start up, but the differences in environments between running Apache, PHP, and MySQL on Windows versus Linux will bite you eventually. Don’t expect to be able to push anything you worked on in WAMP directly to your Linux based server without having to fix a few problems here and there. That said, I have a number of things I run in my WAMP server all the time (linting, IP geolocation, domain DIGs, and a few others). It’s a great tool, but it isn’t a replacement for a staging server.

You should be using a virtual machine for your staging server. That way you can simulate things like network communications and how your code will actually be run on Linux. Virtual Box is free and powerful. You’ll need to get ISOs for whatever operating system you intend to run, and you should be aware that at least some versions of Windows have it written into their License agreement that you can’t run them virtualized.

Gimp is powerful. I don’t really know how to use it well. It’s always been one of those things where I know I need to sit down and teach myself, but since I’ve fallen far into the trenches of server backend work, I haven’t ever had the motivation. Mostly, I use this to resize images when I notice that a website is loading a 14MB PNG on the homepage for some unknown reason. Please designers, think of the mobile phones, keep total page loads (Including all resources, pictures, scripts, and DOM structure) as close to or below 1MB as you can, especially if your site is supported by ad revenue, as there’s no telling how much the ads will need to load on top of that.

GrepWin is an implementation of Grep functionality on Windows. For those of you who aren’t aware, Grep is a terminal tool on Linux/Unix that uses a very efficient algorithm to search through large amounts of text for whatever you define, be it flat text, or something represented by a regular expression. It’s super useful for renaming an included document or global variable, and can really save your bacon if your error reporting is being vague. I like this particular implementation because it has context menu integration, so it’s as easy to use as right clicking in the directory you want to search in and telling it to search. It also supports text replacement with backups, so this simple tool is extremely useful more often than I’d like to admit.

The last tool is an implementation of Git for windows that also includes a Bash terminal. This is important because a lot of developers work in Linux, and so installation directions might only be available as Bash code, this makes it easy to move past that step without being bogged down translating that into Windows CMD code. This is a full implementation of Git, so it comes with all of the version control features and easy project building that Git provides. If you end up working with Electron or Node.JS in general, you’ll end up leaning on this pretty hard.

And that’s it. I’m hoping that later this week I can get into more interesting stuff, but I wanted to have a foundational post of the resources I might reference and the tools I’m using for people to fall back on. It’s the kind of thing I wish I had to reference when I was starting out, especially since all of the tools I’m using now are free and Open Source, and making that change has sped up my workflow significantly, as the only application I’ve listed here with any noticeable boot time is Gimp, something I hated about Dreamweaver every time I had to shut the computer down for whatever reason.

I plan on coming back to this post periodically and updating it as my opinions change, or I become aware of other resources that should be on here. Eventually I’ll also be lining out a software for Linux section, but I’m still shopping around for an affordable and stable Linux development machine.

Next time I think we’re going to dive right into some anecdotes about code commenting and design patterns, and why it pays to think about those from the beginning. Nothing glamorous, but I’d argue hugely important, and you get to laugh with me about some dumb things I’ve done.

Asp!Pharah is a warrior queen and Oasis!Symmetra is her mysterious royal advisor/high priestess who possesses prophetic and arcane abilities. Symmetra is pretty much Pharah’s ace in the hole for battle strategies and thwarting treasonous plots and as such Pharah is very protective of her, while Symmetra herself is intensely devoted to Pharah for rescuing her and elevating her to such a high status in the royal court. Together they’re a terrifying power couple protecting their queendom.

ok!! so!! ur girl had a thought!! what if evie is sort of foreshadowing for helena? i was thinkin bout our boi dezod the sparkly disco lizard and his library of secrets and it occurred to me that he’s not gonna just leave...records of how his arcane magics(tm) work out there w/o precautions to guard them!! so maybe he found he couldn’t destroy the texts (codex???? grimoire???? insert cool term we’ll be using specifically for this macguffin) so he ripped it up into x number of pieces and placed each piece within the heart of some crazy labyrinth or whatever you have to work ur way through not me stealing from mythology again except in the myth its a god’s body that was torn into shreds by his brother after a lil bit of fratricide so that’s fun!! before they can finally get a single piece of the the puzzle.  if they collect all the pieces, they can put the info together and voila!! learn the things dezod knows.

anyway, maybe miss reader extraordinaire evie beaumont has a lot of clues about where things are thanks to her constant bookworming and she (and others or whatever!! she might have the clues but she probs needs help in the labyrinth bc...adlskjfsdkjf tis evie alksdjfjsdkf) set out on a quest to get all this info or whatever.  slowly they put things together but before she can uncover the final piece, she is BAM!! dead.  but not before she’d sent a letter to helena where she mentioned where she believed the last clue was located.  annnnnd that’s where helena finds the piece before she, too, bites the dust...dezod thinks, having killed off the two investigators that his secret is safe but helena got the info to avina via their brainlink in the moments before she died????????

note: possibly instead of a letter, dezod kills evie by sucking out her life force, so then ric meets her ghost before she forgets who she is, etc, and she’s able to give him the info which he gives to avina and then that goes to resistance, etc, and goes to helena that way...that one might give the largest number of ppl the most to do...

also, avina rewriting the codex/grimoire after the end when she begins to put her school together -- it was a document once shared by all which he seized asp so that no other could wield it, etc...

1st of Second Seed, 2E 581

The passing of days and weeks and months means less and little to a being whose lifespan exceeds a thousand years. Yet one cannot help but notice that the passing of this year seems to be going quicker than usual, at least to one’s feeling. Perhaps tis a consequence of the turmoil in the land. Perhaps tis the difference between spending days alone and having others around on a daily basis. Though one suspects it is far more likely that tis a consequence of the tedium that each day seems to bring with it, the dull monotony of the everyday, static and unending grey ordinariness.

One knew, of course, that when one gave up the life of an adventurer in favor of settling with one’s asp spawn toad wart that life would be different. Quieter. More sedate. Yet one had envisioned such domesticity being spent in the more cosmopolitan surroundings of Elden Root, in comfort and in plenty with the attractions of a thriving city at hand. Not ... not shivering in some wooden hovel in the Nordic hole of Skyrim, surrounded by illiterate and suspicious Men whom one must be seen to serve and pay attention to. One had envisioned days of waking besides one’s withered flesh atronach, of revels in the establishment that one owns and runs, of warm summer evenings and the delights of the jungle surroundings. Not waking up with cold infecting one’s joints, the turgid reek of unwashed Men on the wind, dull brown in every direction one cares to look, and ignorant whispers and glances following one as one wanders.

Yet one supposes it does not do to dwell, nor to be seen to complain overmuch. Frustrating as one’s situation may be, it is one’s current reality, for so long as one remains unconvinced that Lirim is capable of taking over the business in its’entirety. One is now well convinced of his abilities with numbers and tallies and the like, yet one still cannot shake the feeling he is over naive and unequipped to continue the work one has begun here. To say naught of his continued tendency to freeze up when confronted with anything resembling a raised voice.

Pah. One should not dwell. One should turn one’s thoughts to other matters, less one find oneself sinking into a mire of Nord induced despair.

If naught else, the energies of the arcane seem to have settled slightly. One can only suppose that the tear has stopped expanding, allowing the material world to once more assert itself around the edges and the surrounding area. One is still aware of a tension in the back of one’s mind, and at night, one can hear odd whispers in one’s dreams, but the worst effects have faded. Birk no longer complains of the effects, and Ma’Riahni has settled too. It makes the everyday that bit easier and less tiresome, and one is once more better equipped to deal with the idiocy of Lirim and Qau’Dar both without feeling the need to verbalize every thought that crosses one’s mind.

The children, meanwhile, are making good on the offer of the guard to join in their exercises. One had made it clear it was their choice whether they wished to partake or not, base and unnecessary as one thought the endeavor was. Gwemba especially was most eager to join in the drills, her face breaking apart in a wide grin when she heard the offer. Birk was, one shall say, less enthusiastic, pulling a face and muttering some dark comment about drilling being beneath his capabilities, but he agreed to go and join his sister.

It did not surprise one entirely when he returned from the second training session of the guard with an exasperated expression on his face, complaining about how the squad leaders seemed to be willfully ignorant of the battlefield principles put forth by General Rijja during the Siege of Orsinium, to say naught of their disdain for the battlefield communication treatises put forth by the Bosmer war leader Onglorn. His sister was, by her own account, mortified when Birk took it upon himself to ask the captain who had invited the children to partake of the exercises just where his men had studied; one cannot say that one was surprised when Birk declined to join Gwemba for a third day of training. One has offered to use the time instead to teach him further in one-to-one tuition; already, one has worked with the boy to refine his control over his ice magics, bolstering his confidence and skill. 

The girl, however, seems to be positively blooming under the attentions of the drillmasters. She comes home in the evening babbling away about the drills and exercises and routines, speaking with animated glee about the new trick she was shown to disarm an opponent, or of the way that one of the guards had played a prank on the other that hd the entire regiment dismissed from the field in a fit of giggles. It all sounds rather common and crass to one, but she is enjoying it, and one will not stand in the way of her happiness, nor of her learning. And she is undoubtedly learning, having already shown one the stretching exercises she already has memorized, and speaking in an off-hand manner about the importance of holding the high ground,

The captain who is watching her has apparently agreed to allow her to begin sparring with other members of the guard. One has every confidence in her. One trusts she will not embarrass her herself, and by extension, one. 

Curiously, Ma’Riahni continues to go with Gwemba out onto the tundra for the guard drills. One has thought she would tire of them as quickly as Birk has, given the whole event is of no true use to her. Yet the small Khajiit is naught if not stubborn, and seems determined to remain as long as Gwemba does, watching and learning. She speaks derisively of the Nords, of course, her twitching ears and silent tongue telling her father and one just how primitive she considers the whole affair - and of the boredom she feels as she watches some of the exercises. Why, she asks, does it matter how Men fight each other, when she could set any of them aflame with but a thought? Tis a sentiment one can appreciate, but one cautioned her against growing complacent, and warned her not to cause trouble with the guard. The rest one left to her father, trusting in Qau’Dar enough to pacify his daughter. Whether that trust is well placed or not, time will tell, though one has no illusions as to how damnably permissive Qau’Dar can be with his daughter.
