it's going to be a maze story, i swear
Tumblr media
«It presents a well-known song, the French ballade titled En la maison Dedalus (In the house of Dedalus). The large red circle in the centre represents the mythological figure Ariadne, who is a prisoner in the house of Daedalus. The music and the lyrics are written in a circular form, spiralling around the central figure, locking her up within the song. As the text is not presenting in a linear format, the reader has to physically turn the book around in their hands in order read the music. The reader will ultimately end up turning the book in time with the music, watching the lyrics swirl around the prisoner, and creating a rhythm with the movement. This is an example of how illustration and typography can be used to add a physical experience to the book, and create an extra layer of understanding.»

Ariadne, Deconstructed
The myth of Ariadne, the minotaur, Theseus, and the labyrinth is well known.
Her tale ends in tragedy, abandoned by Theseus on the shores of the island Naxos - in some versions she dies there, in others, she catches the eye of the god Dionysus.
Classical paintings depict her desperate in her abandonment. For this piece, I wanted to show a different version, focusing on her role in the defeat of the minotaur instead, and twisting that on itself again. “Heroines” of Greek myths so often get swallowed whole by fate and whims of gods and men, but here, Ariadne is in control of her fate and decisions.
First in a triptych, acrylics and gold leaf on cradled panel. Original can be found here.

You may think I’m a dork because I write musicals about Greek mythology and faeries but ACTUALLY I’m a dork because I made sure all of Ariadnes songs have string instruments in their orchestration on the album.

some details that i loved in la chimera (spoiler heavy) :
i posted this on twitter as well but i wanted to include it here too. i love this little moment here where italia rests her head on arthur's shoulder and for a brief moment, he's anchored to the present by that touch, but him being the orpheus that he is, just HAD to turn back and find himself gravitating towards the tombs, the past and his eurydice.
Tumblr media
the fact that italia's name is literally italy in italian and by the end of the movie she creates a community of her own where she's looking out for those that are outcasted by society, in an abandoned train station named riparbella which literally means "to start again".
Tumblr media
arthur's eye always being blocked by shadow throughout the movie until he sees the light at the very end
Tumblr media Tumblr media
according to wiki, the goddess the statue is based on is cybele, goddess of nature, animals, wild places and represents the "creative and destructive force of nature." her phrygian name matar (mother) alludes to the fact that she was a "mediator between the boundaries of the known and unknown, the civilized and the wild, the worlds of the living and the dead." i love that this goddess' presence in the movie symbolizes arthur traversing between the living and the dead worlds and getting closer to beniamina. i love that by the end of the movie, the statue itself becomes unknown to human eyes and returns to the wild, far away from civilization, which is arguably the same fate that arthur meets as he dies.
Tumblr media
the red string that's following arthur around is very reminiscent of the red string ariadne gives theseus to find his way through the maze. it's beautiful how this red string seems to appear only in his dreams at first but slowly starts crossing the boundaries of dreams and reality as the movie goes on until he is able to tug at it by the end and cross over into beniamina's world.
Tumblr media
arthur, at the beginning of the movie, says "so it's you. my last woman's face." how cool is it that beniamina's face resembles cybele's?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
arthur goes back to flora's house after being injured and her daughter finds him in the bathroom. spooked, she says "i thought it was a ghost" which arthur might as well be considering how he's essentially been a walking corpse this entire movie.
Tumblr media
also a special shout out from the bottom of my heart to the sped up sequences, didn't even realize how badly i needed them until i saw them. the chaos in these sequences is everything to me. this is REAL cinema!
Tumblr media
in general, one of the themes that i've come to love about this movie is how objects can have different meanings to everyone. an object like the bell arthur found was just "a thing that rings" whereas italia interprets it as a gift until she comes to realize it's been excavated from a grave. the statue was part of a shrine back when it was made, but to the tombaroli and the sellers, this is only a means to make more money. the train station started off as a place that symbolizes movement of people from the city to the countryside but has now become a home for the outcasts of society. the apotropaic phallus would've have warded off evil and bad luck back in the day, but is now used as a means of escape from the law. a simple red string is the literal lifeline for arthur as he tries to find his way back to his lover.
Tumblr media
also want to give another shout out to the inclusion of the italian troubadours (our greek chorus) who beautifully spell out the tragedy of our protagonist and his gang.
Tumblr media
speaking of music, i really liked this particular song italia was singing as she was practicing. the lyrics go "i'd like to explain to you, o god/ where my suffering lies/ but fate condemns me to weep/ to weep" and that's exactly when arthur finds her crying son. at least italia finds a way for her suffering to end by the end of the movie. maybe we can say the same about arthur too?
Tumblr media
i'll probably add more as i keep rewatching the movie lol and make a thread of this on twitter too (x) thanks for sticking around and let me know what other cool details y'all noticed!

Minoan Kilt
The large, structural skirt worn by Minoan women in art is instantly recognizable, and when I made my own I combined current best guesses with my own personal tastes.
Tumblr media
My kilt shape follows the hypothesis laid out by Bernice Jones in her book Ariadne's Threads: The Construction and Significance of Clothes in the Aegean Bronze Age. She describes the shape of that of a labrys, a double-headed axe with apparent ceremonial significance in Ancient Minoan culture. This garment may be depicted in Linear-B logogram *166 + we, we-being the backwards-s-shaped squiggle in the center which identifies the piece as a garment.
Tumblr media
See pages 336 and 341 in Marie-Louise B. Nosch, The Textile Logograms in the Linear B Tablets
Actual details on construction and materials below the cut:
Construction:
The top and bottom edges of the kilt are concave, so the sides are longer than the middle. This gives the chevron-shape seen on layered kilts in art. In addition, the curved top half makes the skirt flare out, accommodating the hips and giving more freedom of movement to the legs. My kilt measured from my waist to my anklebone at the longest point, and about 1.5 times around my waist.
I chose to make a flounced kilt, with smaller strips of fabric and trim applied to a large base piece, rather than a tiered kilt, in which multiple kilt shapes of varying length are layered one on top of the other, so you end up wrangling 3 layers of fabric around the waist. The flounced kilt saves fabric and gives you a lot more freedom with whatever trim you might want. Jones' diagram for a flounced kilt is seen below:
Tumblr media
Unlike the version in the diagram above, I chose not to attach ties to the garment itself both because the linen I used was very heavy and I was concerned about weight, and also because folding the skirt and securing it with a separate tie worked just fine for my tastes. In total I had four flounces: 2 alternating rows each of fabric and fringe.
The vertical edges of most kilts are left plain, probably representing either the selvage or an edge otherwise finished off to prevent fraying. For my kilt, however, I ended up with a couple inches of self-fringe on either side as I adjusted the fabric to the correct width. At least three examples of kilts with fringed vertical edges are known, all three from the so-called "House of the Ladies" in Akrotiri
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photos from Wikimedia Commons. Image 1. Image 2.
The vertical edges of these kilts are reinforced with a colored band or tape, probably to keep the garment from unintentional further fraying. Accordingly, I did the same on my kilt. I also like that it gave a nice vertical diagonal to counterbalance the horizontal ones.
Materials
I tried to use mainly linen and wool, the fibers most available on Ancient Crete, but some of my trim was cotton because sometimes you just have to use what's cheap and available in the today times.
The base of my kilt is a heavy, patterned linen in what's called a diaper weave, meaning that a repeating diamond pattern is woven into the pattern itself. A lot of the Minoan textiles depicted in frescoes are characterized by repeating geometric patterns, likely woven into the fabric itself, and that was something I wanted to capture in my own piece. My linen is woven with both cream and natural colored threads. The heavy weight is important to give structure to the garment--otherwise it would be kind of limp. My linen was from Burnley & Trowbridge (shameless plug), as was the plain cotton twill tape I used to bind the top and bottom edges of the kilt, and the dark red wool twill tape I used along the vertical edges.
Tumblr media
I bought my cotton fringe from a rug supply store. I had to search a while to find a fringe that would work for me, and I ultimately chose fringes with a woven header rather than the more common knotted one, so that it would lay flat against the kilt. I hid the woven header under a layer of cotton fringed trim from Michaels (yes, Michaels) with this really great diamond and dots pattern woven in black.
The blue layers are from a bolt of vintage wool Kimono fabric. Blue appears frequently in frescoes, likely achieved with indigo or woad dye, or even murex/mollusk dye. The fabric is printed with an imitation ikat pattern of diamonds and squares that made me think "the vibes seem right!" because quite frankly, you aren't going to get "historically accurate" Minoan textiles (which there probably isn't enough archaeological evidence to definitively describe) without, like, hand-weaving it yourself or paying someone hundreds of dollars to do it for you (and that price is if the weaver really likes you). Neither of which appealed to my desire to just make a fun, low stress project. Good enough is good enough.
The narrow trim on the bottom of the blue flounces is vintage cotton/poly woven trim. This trim, while narrow, was quite thick and stiff, which was great because it added more weight and structure to the end of my flounces since the wool fabric itself was quite thin.
The top layer is a custom tablet-woven wool trim that I commissioned from MAHTAVAhandicraft on Etsy. I imagined this as the "centerpiece" of my kilt, and I'd arrange everything to complement it.
Tumblr media
It's a kivrim pattern, which has itself only been traced to 19th-century Anatolia, but I didn't care. The way it looks like waves reminded me of how central the sea was to life in the Ancient Aegean and Mediterranean and it captured the idea and aesthetic I was pursuing. I mean, doesn't it remind you of these dolphins?
Tumblr media
(I like the dolphins)
The whole thing was machine sewn with the exception of hemming and adding trim to the blue flounces. If you were to look at it from the back, you'd see lots of zigzag stitches, because i wanted to be fast! and have fun! not chase some unreachable ideal of "accurate."
As for wearing it, I chose to wear it with the top part folded/rolled down over a belt, so I have a thick tube of fabric around my waist. Many images, like the frescoes above of women with fringed kilts, appear to just show the kilt being tied closed. Other images are so fragmented or stylized that it's unclear what kind of skirt closure was used. Sculptures and figurines definitely show some kind of SOMETHING around the waist, whether this is folded fabric or a kind of belt is unclear. Different art could show different things!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think I see evidence of a continuous line from the skirt to the waist-roll on the figure on the left, found in Troas, which I think indicates some kind of skirt-folding situation. The woman on the right, found in Crete, looks more like she's wearing some kind of long coiled belt, or perhaps snakes. Who knows? I don't! For my own part, I found the combination of rolled waist + tie belt the most secure for doing things like kneeling, stomping around, and wading into rivers to rescue bees. I also liked that it gave me the bulk around the hips that gives Minoan figurines such a powerful silhouette, and proportionally gives more of an hourglass shape. If you wanted to do something more firmly grounded in the sources, stick just with the waist tie or belt, wrapped around a couple times and tied in back. If you want to be like me, just say "well we don't KNOW it didn't happen" and just do whatever you want. Have fun! Whatever happens, it should be fairly easy to move around in the kilt--this is not a restrictive garment, just a heavy one.

𝓐RIADNE "𝓑UNNY" 𝓑LANC ℘
ARIADNE BLANC is the daughter of the WHITE RABBIT & WHITE QUEEN. she was born with a ribbon of white in her hair and a pocket watch tucked under her tongue. she lived in wonderland like it was a lullaby—soft, strange, and delicate like a secret. her world spun sideways, full of mirrors that whispered and painted roses that bled when you touched them too hard.
and then the clocks stopped.
and she left.
ever after high feels like a story she read once and forgot—too symmetrical, too clean. she walks its halls like a ghost wrapped in tulle and lace, trailing the scent of lemon cakes and old parchment. people call her royal, but it never quite fits. SHE'S NOT DESTINED FOR ANYTHING WRITTEN DOWN. she’s not trying to be someone’s future. just trying not to disappear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
𝓐RIADNE AND 𝓒HASE 𝜗𝜚
lace & leather . . .
ariadne remembers the first time she saw CHASE REDFORD—not like a fairytale beginning, but like a pause, a breath caught behind the ribs. he wasn't born from wonderland’s bloodline, but there was still something whimsical about him. red armor gleaming through poppy petals, eyes like a promise you don’t want to keep. he looked like a warning: all sharp edges and stillness in a world that spun sideways. made for war councils and heavy crowns, not croquet games and riddles. she was all tulle and time, curls kissed by clock hands, stitched together from ribbon and riddles. he looked at her like he already knew her. and she let him. there wasn’t a spark—there was gravity. the air thickened between them like velvet heat. he didn’t say her name. but she felt it, curled behind his teeth.
AT EVER AFTER HIGH, it was like something shifted—softly, but permanently. there was just a look. a pull. a gravity neither of them could shake. he said her name like he’d always known it, like it was written somewhere under his skin. and ariadne didn’t say anything—she just stepped closer. he is leather—broken in, steady, warm in a way that lingers. he smells like smoke and something older, like the kind of forest that keeps secrets. his voice is low, careful, the kind of sound that settles in your bones. she is lace—delicate in design, but threaded with sharpness. lace can unravel. lace can bind. and he never underestimates her. like they’ve always belonged to each other—even before they knew what that meant.

𝓐RIADNE AND 𝓛IZZIE ❥
this is what makes us girls
her roommate is LIZZIE HEARTS, sharp-tongued and sugar-sweet in a way that tastes more like pomegranate than candy. their room smells like ink, rosewater, and rebellion. lizzie says ariadne talks in riddles. ariadne says lizzie wears her heart like a blade. they understand each other in that way only wonderland girls do— girls who were born into chaos and made it look like poetry. they play cards until midnight, braid each others hair, and fall asleep with books half-open across their chests.

Hello Haley! Can you give us teaser for part 6 of Like a Waltz, or maybe where do you thing the story's heading, the vibes etc?
hi hi! honestly ive not worked on like a waltz in some time. ive been struggling to find the tone again (and i also really want to update ariadne's thread before updating like a waltz again!) but a lot of this chapter has moments i wrote like as soon as the ice of my teeth mv came out so i do have like 3k words written lol. i'll pull from that for this lil teaser! as for where the chapter is heading, the over-all goal for the next chapter is to introduce hongjoong and seonghwa FINALLY lol! i dont want to spoil too much but i can give you this moment between yunho and yn leading up to matz meeting...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1k words.
It wasn’t Wooyoung who showed up at her apartment’s door nor was it San. It was Yunho. Fine-wired spectacles glimmered in the early morning light; a heavied dark-green long coat was slung over his shoulder, and his hair was mussed to a perfect consistency so the fine strands fell over his brow. His eyes were dark as he looked this way and that way around her apartment complex as if analyzing it the same way he analyzed her the first dinner they shared.
“Yunho,” she exclaimed, after she had unlatched each lock to swing open her door with an audible jingle of the metal work.
His gaze, liquid honey in the sunlight, shifted from glancing around to her locks to then her. Cooly and smooth, like the finest of liquors. He took his time, in control. His lips curled in a smile at her.
“Darling,” he drawled out.
It was then she realized how tired he looked - darkness under his eyes as if he hadnt slept, the wrinkled nature of his white collared shirt, and the looseness of his black tie. It wasn’t the prim and polished Yunho she had remembered in every single one of their encounters. But then, she guessed she didn’t look exactly put together – a frilly old robe tied over her soft pajama dress. Her hair tied back but not at all styled to perfection. When Wooyoung said he’d visit, he never visited so early, more keen to sleeping in she’s realized than rushing out into the blossoming, still chilly winter.
“I wasn’t expecting you,” she admitted, bashfully.
“Wooyoungie gave me your address; he and San got caught up in work last night,” he said. “I am just a delivery boy.”
It was a soft jest as he moved his other arm that was not holding onto his coat and presented a sleek wrapped gift. A plush red silk satin bow kissed the dark-black box to perfection; there was a embossed brand she had seen once before on the side of the box. ‘FAITH’ written in a fancy script with angel wings and a spiderweb it seemed.
“Oh!” she gasped, not expecting such a display.
When Wooyoung had said not to fret about clothing, she hadn’t expected an whole ensemble to arrive – she had thought he’d simply help her style herself. He never once before was picky about how she looked – even when they went to the many outings and sports events. She didn’t expect a gift. Especially nothing so… shiny. Wrapped up and heavied by the way Yunho held it carefully. It gleamed of something brand new.
Yunho blinked at her, lips quirking faintly. “Yes?”
“I just—I didn’t expect a gift.” She admitted.
He leveled her with a serious look despite the smile growing on his face, making his face look dreadfully unserious and soft. A glowering glare paired with a smile seemed to suit Yunho.
“Has Wooyoung convinced you that we wouldn’t spoil you?” he asked, outstretching the gift once more.
“We?” she countered, taking the box and raising a curious brow.
We… She didn’t know there was a we with him included.
Yunho’s cheeks flushed a pretty pink, blinking and looking aside. Now, he looked totally soft. Like a guard dog with his owner, he reverted to a puppyish state. He licked his lips.
“Was it not obvious?” he asked quietly. “We – I find you – “ He struggled with his word, eyes dancing away.
How adorable and uncharacteristic for the man. She leaned forward on the doorstep.
“Cute, appealing, talented?” she teased.
“Precious.” he said simply, locking eyes with her. “And, all of the above - if it matters.”
She hugged the box to her chest, a wave of tropical cologne ballooning from it as she squeezed the box’s soft contents a bit too much. A sweet blush coated her cheeks as well.
“Well, I think you are precious, too,” she said softly. “I’ve come to cherish you all.”
His ears were a cute shade of rosy red, surprising her with how much this man could blush. Cute. Clearing his throat, Yunho nodded, shifting his jacket in his arms. “Good,” he said, equally as soft.
“Would you like to stay for a cup of coffee?” she offered. “As thanks.”
If there was ever a look of despair and conflict, it painted itself on his face. When flustered, romantically, it seemed he became an open book. Sweet as jelly and soft as cotton candy rather than the brooding character she met that night in their mansion. Perhaps it was the lack of lackeys to impress.
“If I could I would, darling,” he said earnestly. “I have matters to attend to unfortunately.”
Her lips shifted into a pout, one that made Yunho want to eat his words. His heart panged at the sight and he swallowed, glancing back at his car. The engine was still on, rumbling in the cold morning air.
“I understand,” she said after a moment.
Tone shifted, he frowned, his brows furrowing behind his spectacles.
“I do mean it,” he insisted, hand going to her arm to rub soothingly. His long fingers made soft circles. His gaze was strong, like that night, magnetic to her. “I’m sorry, YN; next time, I’ll stay for a cup.”
She smiled softly, the thing growing more genuine as he stared at her with aching eyes as if rejecting her was as painful as a bullet.
“Just for a cup?” she teased softly.
“Anything you want,” he settled on, serious despite her jestign.
“Oh, a cookie, too,” she giggled before stepping back a smidge, his hand falling from her form.
“Anything,” he repeated.
He looked so different. She remembered Wooyoung described him – as all bark, no bite similar to Jongho. In this moment, she saw that. Not a business man or dangerous man… he looked reverent and kind and all things good.
“Thank you, Yunho,” she said.
“You’re welcome, darling. You’ll look stunning in it I’m sure,” he complimented before taking a step back, his smile sweet.
Then, in a swoop of his coat over his shoulders, his expression faded from soft and kind to something more hardened, strong and stony. The façade was back on.
“Have a good time tonight.”

“Kanan, it’s not that bad.” You grunt in pain.
He’s dragging you back onto the Ghost as Zeb and Sabine shoot at Lock Syndicate who just happens to be shooting at you. His arm is slung around your waist, your arm around his neck, and he’s holding your hand. In normal circumstances, you’d probably be flustered.
This rescue mission hadn’t gone all that well, and you’d managed to get yourself shot in the shoulder.
“Hate to break it to you, but it is, actually.” He glares at you as he nods for you to lift your shirt up.
The pain is definitely unpleasant, but you’ve been shot before. It’s an occupational hazard in this line of work. You’re used to it at this point.
“Hold still.” His words are hard but his hands are soft against your skin as he holds your arm and applies bacta-spray to the front of your shoulder.
His hands are always so warm, it makes you lightheaded just thinking about it. All of a sudden, you start to feel a little woozy and don’t realize you’re swaying until Kanan says “Woah, easy there.” and holds you up against himself so that you’re resting your head on his shoulder.
You notice him breathe in, subtly and you chuckle.
“Did you just sniff me?” You whisper.
You feel the ship hit hyperspace and then realize you hadn’t even noticed everyone else getting on board.
“Your hair smells nice.” He shrugs against you. “Which is rather incredible despite the grime on all of us after that mission.”
You laugh softly, sleepily as the pain starts to subside from the bacta.
And as if he could sense you closing your eyes, he gently helps you up from the booth and guides you to your bunk room that you share with Sabine, who happens to not be present at the moment, thankfully. You know she would give you a teasing glance.
Kanan slowly guides you down to your bunk. “There you go.”
“You were angry at me earlier.” You murmur.
“Yeah.”
“Why?” You turn your head toward him, finding him kneeling down next to you.
He rubs a hand over his face, as if he’s debating on being honest with you.
“It doesn’t matter anymore.” He shrugs.
“Yeah it does.” You trace your finger over the curve of his nose, smiling as you stop at his bottom lip.
His lips part easily and his stare feels heavier.
“I was angry because… the thought of losing you…” He whispers. “I… I don’t think I could handle it.”
Oh.
“Kanan-” You start but he just squeezes your hand.
“It’s okay. We can talk about it when you’re better rested.” He tells you, softly.
Exhaustion settles in your bones and while you really do want to talk about what Kanan just confessed, you know you need to rest. So you nod, and watch him start to leave.
“Kanan?” You call out, making him pause in the doorway to look back at you. “I don’t want to lose you either.”
And with that, you shut your eyes, letting sleep take hold of you.
