to clarify: "default" is whichever font is the standard on your writing document of choice; arial for gdocs, calibri for word "similar serif fonts" are fonts like "average" on google docs, just times new roman but slightly different.

12. a trope you’re really into right now

i love tropes so much, i'm a big fan of basically all of them. i'll rawdog the bdsm au and sexual slavery tags on ao3, but that's always, not right not in particular haha. i think the trope i was thinking about most recently was truth and obedience curses and then also fantasy generally, but more as a genre than a trope. and i am forever waiting for someone to write my dream story where a bunch of f1 drivers are stuck on a plane and get drunk and play drinking games. also, if someone could write spin the bottle or some other stupid set up where there is endless kissing? incredible. i do feel my dream story is so specific i'd have to write it myself but would love for the universe to somehow just offer it to me.

OK I FOUND SOME. i found a lot actually but i got bored of rereading them so i'll go with the first one i found which i had entirely forgot about, deleted from my first makichi fic, right in front of my eyes

“Do you trust those guys?” Chihaya blinks. Sure, he does. Loathe as he is to admit it, Kiyomine is as much of a monster as ever, and Kaname improves at a pace far beyond any true novice could. Todo’s performance had been questionable in their last game, but Chihaya’s willing to give him another shot to prove himself because he’s shown results before. Yamada is as reliable as ever, even while they iron out the kinks in their lineup. They have good senses, and what some of the group lacks in skill, they make up for in enthusiasm. They’ve settled into a good routine, and they’ll only get better from here. “Outside of baseball,” Makita tacks on belatedly.

so.... i wrote this fic back in july, so i don't really remember any of my thoughts outside of the notes i have in the doc. but these lines happen during a conversation chihaya and makita have after the second round of the summer tournament in first year, when makita asks chihaya to meet up. the fic is about, like, exploring how the shitty things makita said to chihaya came from a place of hurt and rejection rather than from hating chihaya or resenting him, and about chihaya learning that makita didn't resent him but just wanted to be friends with him. it's about reconciling, to put it simply. it's a short and sweet one too. i think the reason the above passage got cut is twofold

a lot of my early bouba wips have this thing where i. have the narrating character (chihaya or todo, p much) kinda... reflecting on the composition of the team and thinking a nice (and/or snarky) thing about each person. idk why i did it so much. we get it, the team is full of earnest weirdos who are great at baseball or are learning to be great at baseball. the show told us that already, move on. i think the reason this came up in this fic is bc makita has noticed that chihaya is actually friends w his high school team while he wasnt friends w anyone on his and makita's old team, and makita wonders why they weren't good enough. so chihaya thinks about his team and why he's friends with them. i think this paragraph just didnt feel like it really added anything by going specific though. none of these things are like, things makita or others on the old team didn't have tbh. but then to my second reason

"outside of baseball", now that i think about it, doesn't make sense at all in a fic about chihaya. bc 1) we know that one of his biggest problems is trusting people, which is presented to us through the lens of baseball and how he would only rely on himself in crucial moments, rather than being presented to us in terms of his social life in general, and 2) makita doesn't care about things that aren't baseball, and he wouldn't care about whether or not chihaya trusts his team outside of it. he WOULD care so much about whether he trusts them in baseball, bc he didnt trust makita or the rest of that team. but i dont think ANY of this occurred to me when i cut it. but now that i reflect on it i'm glad i did LOL

ok anyways idr what i was talking abt. i found a TON of cut stuff for the todochi/makichi cheating fic too but it was all boring. no wonder it was cut AHAHA

27. your favorite part of the writing process

HM.......... i think..... ok, i don't have much of a "process" other than: write whenever my brain and hands allow me to until either i get hopelessly stuck, or i finish it. if i get stuck i go to some trusty friends and gather thoughts and i discuss deeply with my beta (THAT'S YOU!). and then i work on it more and finish it. editing is generally minimal.

so that said, i think my favorite parts are

when i have an idea take hold so strongly that i spend a day writing multiple thousands of words and end up with a solid chunk of really good shit, ESPECIALLY if i was just endlessly rotating it in my head before but never writing words other than notes. what's better than coming back to ur doc the day after a writing fever like that and seeing all this shit that wasn't there before. IT SLAPS.

actually, having beta discussions is probably my favorite part. it's so fun every time to absolutely dissect the shit out of the plot, or a character, or a paragraph, or even just a sentence. i feel like how i think about writing has transformed so much in a short time bc of this part of the process and it's also made me better at identifying my own goals and intentions etc. it's really fun to really get into it for hours and come out of it with a page full of notes to start plugging away with. i've never stayed stuck after we do this so it really is the best thing ever

this is weird bc aesthetically i prefer serifs and i had a phase where id always change the font to georgia before writing but these days i feel like the default on gdocs is fine (i think it's arial? some sans serif. calibri is also fine) because ive become someone who just scribbles things on her phone in the lift at work and that's like when i do the most writing. i did use the comic sans trick for a while which works surprisingly well

if im on the bus then wingdings. ive done this many times. it works fine it's just a faith system you have to trust that your future self will be able to decipher your typos. actually it's kind of good because you just get your shit down out of your brain onto the thing and you cant read it back which removes all self consciousness. it's like maybe ideal for a first draft?

i feel like ive gone down Some Rabbitholes for fic before but just recently (like 2 days ago) i had to ask kj to please explain organic chemistry to me and also what organic chemistry is. he had to painfully walk me through an entire chemical reaction just so i could make a stupid one-off joke. anyway now i understand why gummy bears explode when you put them in potassium chlorate

I’m not too picky with fonts so I usually go with the default, which I think is Arial on gdocs, but i do switch it to Helvetica for editing bc one of my betas prefers that!! (shoutout to @aeraspais)

Controversial Opinion

Microsoft Office is superior to Google's features. Hands down.

Point 1: Email

Okay, so here Google does actually win one. Gmail is better than Outlook not because it's a better service but because it's not trying so hard. Outlook is over-functional, in a way that says someone is justifying having a paycheck by adding features that no one wants or uses.

Point 2: Word Processor

Microsoft Word beats Gdocs to death in a back alley. Gdocs sucks so much ass it's not even funny. Word is the perfect program - clear parameters, nicely in-depth features and controls that allow for precise formatting. It doesn't lag no matter how long the doc is and it has more fonts than people on planet earth. You can easily save the doc as a PDF and it prints without issue. Gdocs has to beg for mercy and can barely manage to save to desktop without completely fucking up what little formatting you can manage. Plus, did you know that Gdocs doesn't save your work as a proper text file, but as image plates of each page? God, Docs sucks so much.

Point 3: Spreadsheets

GSheets is a joke. Its mother thinks its a failure and its siblings only hang out with it because they feel bad. Excel is intimidating, but for a reason - it knows what it's doing and is damn good at it. Nothing is beyond it. Nothing.

Point 4: Presentations

GSlides is screaming, crying, throwing up when Powerpoint walks into the room. Can you imagine? Intuitive slide management, no lag after ten slides, detailed formatting and being able to save and transfer without breaking both of its legs.

Point 5: Online Storage

OneDrive not only has more space, it has more sophisticated organization too. It saves stuff like your desktop would - in files, preserved formatting. It can also host online-only documents or just be a cloud backup. Drive wishes it could be so elegant instead of a dumpster.

Point 6: Meeting Platform

Teams is an unholy middle-management monstrosity made from a bargain with whatever eldritch being is in control of frustrating UI, but who tf has ever heard of Duo? Did you even know Google has a knock-off Zoom? I hate Teams, but if I had to be stucm in an elevator with the three of them, Teams is the only one I'd trust to reliably host a call for help. With a free Halo background, no less (Halo's artwork is so pretty you guys).

Point 7: Cost

Okay, Microsoft takes the L here again. I don't mind paying for stuff, but I resent subscriptions. Just fucking let me buy the program outright, you shitlords. But then again, Google is free for a reason.

I'm not a Microsoft shill or fan here, just a frustrated and irritated TA who's had people attempt to use Google's hideous products in their presence when the university provides Office to its students for free. The disrespect, honestly.

Dishonourable mention: Apple Pages.

You don't even have an excuse. Microsoft made Office for Apple and you know damn well that no dropbox accepts Pages files because they suck. Get that shit out of here.

P.S. I can tell when you're an Apple user too, because you never change the default font (San Francisco) to one any PC would have (like Arial, Calibri or Times New Roman).

I am boring. The default font in gdocs is Arial and I've never bothered changing that. It's simple and clean, and that works for me. I know people have tricks about changing the font to make themselves write, but the change annoys me more than it helps. (Though it does help me for catching typos at the last minute! Which is why I review my final drafts very closely as preview in AO3 before hitting post.)

Well, I now know WAY too much about the Siege of Carthage, let me tell you. 😂 That one's gonna linger. I've managed to forget most of the Roman military strategies at this point, at least, but hoo boy was that ever a deep dive. Your mileage may vary in terms of how "interesting" that topic is.

19- pet snake or pet bird?

i love both so so much so this is a really interesting question for me. it really depends on what my living arrangements are, ultimately, but if i could have the appropriate amount of space then i'd like to keep pigeons or chickens because they're not as high maintenance than other traditionally kept birds. if not, i'd like a smaller snake, one whose species i will definitely research to make sure i don't end up with a snake that starts off small but ends up being massive as it grows into adulthood. either way, they would both be pets i'd like to have in the future ^^

20- weapon of choice in a medieval battle

a polearm. yes i may be a terminally online queer tumblr user who adores swords, but my build would probably make better use of a polearm. specifically, a glaive or a naginata, ones with longer and flatter blades than spears. they're sword-like enough but still keep the handling of a longer weapon. though i may have a short sword as a side arm as a treat for when enemies get too close to use my weapon effectively. so swords and swords but on a longer stick

i actually do not have a default font when i type something out because i love messing with different fonts, with exceptions. 1) i hate arial as a default font on gdocs, which is what drive me to experiment with other fonts and 2) i will only use times new roman for school assignments. but all of my personal documents use a wide variety of different fonts, with the one real trend among them being that they are fonts on the larger side because of my difficulty reading small text. anecdotally, the most recent document i have been working on in gdocs uses montserrat on the normal font thickness.

generally just arial 11pt gdocs default!! i do sometimes change my font for editing (sometimes more than once) because it helps me catch typos and it also helps me with some of the horrendous brainworms i get from editing. typically i first switch to cambria and then to palatino but i’m not married to that! i like using palatino for a final pass through because it’s the font i use on my kindle and kindle app so it makes things feel Finished to me

I draft in Times New Roman 12pt font single spaced because college made me hate double. I usually have the zoom set to 120%. However, when I put it into Gdocs, it ends up being Arial 11pt by default and I just don't change it. That's fine. Also, sometimes I will do a round of edits in comic sans.

So, I just realized that I'm really only willing to write when I'm using a specific font (EB Garamond my beloved), and I was wondering if you have a preferred font when you write. that's so cool! i use different colors cause my eyes get tired easily or sometimes it makes me concentrate better at certain times of day.

my font usage is hilarious because you can tell what year i was writing, generally, in my gdocs. i started out with helvetica neue/arial, then switched to roboto condensed, and then swapped over to avenir pretty uniformly.

since i switched to ellipsus full time i've found i prefer their default font, literata, at these settings:

with all my writing in ellipsus and elsewhere set to justify. i don't pust it as justified on ao3 though.

i am picky about what i used to sort out my metadata. i haven't had to do much forethinking in awhile on tags but i usually specify colors there. i prefer league spartan for my titles and then pick colors from there that i use with the template i whipped up in gdocs:

GOD okay i'm a heathen? I usually use whatever default font is in the word processor that I'm using. When i'm in the gdocs, i'm using arial. If I'm in like word etc I'm usually using cambria or calibri, or IF NONE OF THOSE, times new roman.

I should probably consider switching it to something else because I sometimes have vision issues but...IDK that's too much effort.

14 - where do you get your inspiration

SO the threesome fic was inspired by this ask and then my own brain just kinda taking things off on their own. LIKE usually someone sends me an ask that puts something in my brain, and then I'll be at work or in the shower and my brain just starts examining it like it's a thing to be dissected, and then suddenly I have an entire plot and it has to get out of my brain and onto paper.

For just general fic stuff, I'll see something or chat about something with another writer, and then suddenly things start developing. It doesn't always result in something I'm going to write, but sometimes, when things are real good, my brain starts to write things and then i have to get them out. Sorry this is a SUPER rambly reply.

i usually write in whatever docs has it set to at first like arial or calibri but usually i’ll change it to something else like tnr or something before i post anywhere just so i can proofread in a new light, i don’t care much as long as it’s readable while i’m working B)

10. Has a piece of writing ever “haunted” you? Has your own writing haunted you? What does that mean to you?

i think a lot of poetry has a tendency to do this more than full works like novels or whatever it’s like that raw emotion poems communicate really bluntly that i feel myself thinking about when i’m experiencing those same emotions sometimes like unbidden

as for my own writing honestly i move between ideas pretty quickly once they’re fully articulated so i would say maybe no? but i reread my own works a lot so i think it would be hard to “haunt” me . maybe in a few years i would have a different answer

omg ok SO i’ve been writing like all my life i used to write on like lined paper in my free time or in class during elem and middle school, just like original stories u know. then i wanna say late middle school i probably started writing fanfiction in my notes app and reading like wattpad and ff.net stories and then eventually maybe early high school i switched to gdocs and reading more on ao3. i don’t think i started posting on ao3 until like 2017 maybe and even now i have way more wips and unfinished stuff in docs compared to the like five or so fics i havé up on ao3

i wouldn’t say ive had many dry spells with writing at all my first thought when i get into a new fan space or have a new oc is to write for them bcos it’s like my favorite thing to do!! rn i’m really into writing stuff for me and my best friends oc so that’s been occupying most of my free time but i hope to circle back to my bnha longfic soon and get more of that out bcos i adore that story and have a lot more written i just need to bridge between now and what’s next hehe. always writing just depends on what i’m thinking about for what gets done B)
