Incidentally I don't want to give anyone the wrong impression here. This is like, my magnum opus of Talking About Mid. Arifureta is special to me personally and I love it, but the books especially have issues. They're translations of isekai light novels, so the prose is at best tolerable. They're extremely het and problematically misogynistic, fatphobic, and transmisogynistic in the ways you'd expect from a harem isekai. A lot of that, especially the last two points, got cut from the anime. So it's hard to say in good conscience 'read it instead of watching it'. But at the same time, the first season of the anime is confusing and weirdly paced, fails to set up an important plot point in s2, cuts a lot of actually worthwhile content, and has some of the worst cgi ever made (to the point I'm still shocked it managed to get a second season). A bit of a catch 22 sitch. And on top of that, it's cringe as HELL in a super chuuni way. I of course live for chuuni shit but I don't expect most people to be able to enjoy it. But with all that said, I think it still has value. There's a lot in there that's good in ways you rarely get with isekai. I'm not gonna tell you to watch it or read it. But I do very much like it.

So I started rewatching Arifureta: From Commonplace To World's Strongest again. I love the chemistry between Yue and Haijime. So I decided to create a one shot series of their adventures under the sheets while in Tortus. They give enough hints in the show so why not depict what the tension conveys on screen. If you haven't seen it's about a group who conquer labyrinths to learn the truth about the world of Tortus.

The anime doesn't do a good job of it but the first few chapters of the manga make arifureta really feel like it's going down the dark fantasy route.

(There's more in-between some of these)
Just look at these panels. This is good shit. Him flipping back and forth between a desperate urge to live and begging for the relief of death has emotion behind it. You really get the since he's losing his mind down there all chapter. In fact this early part is so gripping it actively makes the over the top ecchi power fantasy non-sense later worse. I'm not over the top power fantasy non-sense, with or without ecchi elements, I read fucking how not too summon a demon lord and liked it. The real problem is you actually EXPECT something else after this point. You've gotten invested in the gritty grimdark underdog story not the over powered protag story. You want to watch him struggle and rage and get kicked and kick back. You want to see where this goes. But then it doesn't go anywhere except a harem ecchi "comedy?" power fantasy that fails to both be a power fantasy OR funny on purpose. The most interesting part of the series becomes nothing more than window dressing for just another harem isekai. And the fact the MC is never enjoying himself, because of that window dressing, bogs down the whole mood of the over the top harem it seems the author really wanted to write.

Lmaooo I can't believe Hajime said it to Kaori that he loves only Yue. He looked her straight in the eyes and said I don't love you. You don't stand a chance. You are dragging me down

Arifureta Volume 13
The final volume! I really tore through this series and I liked it! I'm on that isekai light novel grind. I can read isekai LN just fine, but I can't stand watching them. Maybe being able to read through the bullshit is easier than having to sit down for 23 minutes an episode and deal with the girls squirming all over a guy or dense MC bullshit. Right before this I finished Mushoku Tensei and I liked it but neither that nor this have dense spineless MC, Rudy knows what he wants, most of the time, and Hajime is very enjoyable. Him and Yue get together volume 1 and there's no bullshit that's the pairing and it's a really strong pairing. That pairing does turn into like a lot more than a pair but oh well. Which leads me to my thoughts:
The harem got way too crazy at the end, I would not mind the main 4 girls (and maybe Shizuku she's cool) but I don't think Aiko-chan-sensei and Liliana were needed.
Ehitruje was like if A Realm Reborn Lahabrea was the final boss and that was it. He was annoying and pretty evil, but I also think our chuuni lover author was playing Shadowbringers while writing the finale.
Hajime is very swag and cool and can do anything! So awesome. It was a lot of asspull but not really, Hajime really worked to do all the bullshit he does, and it is impressive. It feels earned, I liked that, even if he's OP.
I'm glad Endou-kun got some spotlight. Ever since one bonus story described him and Hajime playing ping pong together I wanted them to be friends. It was fun for vampire Hajime to think Endou's blood smelled the most delicious and I think Endou should have joined the harem. Actually, no harem just Hajime x Endou.
I wish Kaori didn't join the harem off screen. We got more discussion of Aiko and Hajime having sex than Kaori and Hajime doing anything romantic. A big shame I like Kaori.
I really liked this series. I think I will watch the OVA with the Liberators and Hajime's gang. I hope the after story gets published I wanted more interactions with the gang in our world, especially meeting Hajime's parents. No breaks I was reading this every day from start to finish. I don't know what I'll read next but it will probably be more junk food. I'll try to pick a finished series. Maybe I'll finish Lazy Dungeon Master.

time to get cringe about arifureta again since ive made it further into the books. i mentioned last time that i wanted to keep an eye out for more examples of things hajime uses to mitigate the inevitable changes wrought upon him by the hero's journey. and now, in addition to yue and aiko-sensei, we've found our third, in book 3: hajime's rule about enemies. up to this point, the rule has just been 'anything in my way is an enemy, and i kill all enemies'. edgy and overly simple, yes, but shit sucked in the abyss so i cant blame him. and considering how dangerous the world is and the fact that basically every faction on earth including the gods want to kill him, its kinda necessary to have a concrete way to determine when you have to kill someone instead of leaving it up to like. Vibes. now, naturally, up to this point it's mostly been used as an escalation device. flipping the switch from a nonviolent situation to a violent situation when it becomes necessary. however, in the third book, this formula is flipped to take a violent situation and DE-escalate it into a nonviolent one. this person WAS an enemy, but no longer poses a threat and is no longer in the way, so she is no longer and enemy according to the rule, and therefore hajime doesnt kill her. and now that this rule works both ways, its an important tool for maintaining his humanity. he's stopped himself before the point of no return. now, im not 100% sure on this next point bc im not done reading, but i think we can separate these bonds into different categories. the book presents them all as preserving humanity, but i think each so far works to preserve something else. yue, found in the depths of the abyss, preserves sanity. the rule preserves humanity. and aiko-sensei preserves civility. we'll talk more about aiko when i actually get to that part of the books, but the interesting thing to me is the distinction between things he can regain and things he cant afford to lose. yue and the rule are urgent and he knows if he loses either his sanity or his humanity completely, theres no coming back from that. but civility is something he believes he can relearn, so he discards it. aiko is less a chain binding it to him and more a safety line he can follow back after returning home. interestingly, neither of his two new companions (shea and tio) are considered bonds for my purposes. im curious to see if that changes. i hope myu is a bond. i love myu. anyway once again no paragraph breaks bc nobody should be subjected to my arifuretaposting
