How do you get that grainy texture on your art? It’s very nice!
thank you!! i love art that's soft and fuzzy...
i generally do it a handful of different ways, but i tend to bounce between a color noise filter layer in soft light mode, between 30% and 50% opacity,
... or i use something from my wide array of paper textures, and usually set the layer to overlay and play with opacity till i'm happy with it
......oooorr i do a combination of the two! which i did in the final version of this piece, which i Also added a gradient map to to make the colors a lil more ✨Dramatic✨
here's where i got (most of) my paper textures and here's a rainbow color noise texture (that i don't personally use but looks rlly similar!)
#i actually use a color noise filter from a VHS auto action set i used to use on my VHS icons. if yall remember those#my art#ask#tutorial#i guess??#idunno#if you have more questions feel free to dm me! i love clip and i love to teach ppl abt all its cool features#dinosaur#since i prolly wont seperate post my landscape study tht i threw a spinosaurus on

How do you nail that movie screencap effect thingamajig?? I'm a sucker for VHS-animation looking stuff but sometimes fiddling with blending modes, gaussian blur, noise, ntscQT etc. just doesn't feel right.
For me, I love experimenting with a mix of using blending modes and using ntscQT, but I definitely get the feeling of it still not feeling right despite using those methods!
I'll do my best with explaining how I go about achieving the look! The art software I use is Paint Tool Sai 2 (but any art software with blending modes + layers will do!). Apologies in advance if this is too wordy haha
1.) I draw the usual setup- a background with a character or so. I usually flatten all the layers into one but, for this case, I just only flattened the layer the character's on:
2.) I duplicate the character layer, blur it, set its blending mode to "Lighten", and adjust the opacity as needed before merging the two layers together. I duplicate again, blur again, set the mode to "Darken", adjust opacity, and merge again!
3.) (1st pic) Once I do that, I duplicate & blur the character layer again, then move it a bit to the side (any direction is fine; for this I moved it to the right). Then I set the moved layer's mode to "Color"! After that, I add a drop shadow behind the character layer to give it the look of a traditional animation cel being used.
(2nd pic) Next, I flatten ALL the layers now into one layer, duplicate it and blur it greatly + set blurred layer mode to "Saturation" & move it in any direction before merging all layers again!! lots of duplicating and merging LOL!!!
4.) OK THE LAYER DUPLICATION + MERGING PROCESS IS FINISHED FINALLY! Now we just adjust the colors!
I like to lower the Contrast and raise the Depth, though the adjustments can vary with each piece, depending on how much of a effect you want! Image on right includes the settings I used for this. (I also added a noise layer, but that's optional)
5.) And for the final step.... make the image a smaller size and save as a JPEG/JPG file!!! This should somewhat achieve the low-quality crunch look!
This step is entirely optional, but you can take the JPEG image and add it to ntscQT to mess around with different settings! Here's one I put together:

hey i was just wondering how you make your art have that kinda film grain/old vhs type quality? its just so monch-able and i wanna do that with my art :3
I actually just made a video for TikTok about it tee hee
But too long didn’t watch: I use the app prequel and CapCut to add the filters
( prequel says ai in the description but I think it’s more bcus it’s a trendy word and they might have one weird Cartoon Me filter )
But yeah yummy prequel filters n effects: lomiograph, Oklahoma, brownie, vhs, and Miami
And then capcut has an effect in the tv section called betamax and she’s scrummy yum yum
And also lowering the contrast adding fade lowering highlights adding noise adding dust stuff like that :3

📼 Procreate “VHS Glitch” Tutorial 📼

Thought I’d throw this together in case anyone was interested!
-Duplicate lineart layer (3 layers) Fill 2 with red/blue, or other colors, set colored layers to multiply.
-Move the colored lineart slightly off the top one. Merge everything and duplicate a bunch.
- put noise over every layer, varying amount in each layer. Choose a couple random layers to glitch and use the “wave” mode. Adjust to your liking. ✌🏻✨

is there a filter you use on your art to get that distinctive tv vibe? I love it so much and wanna learn how to do it

i get asked this alot! i'll show what i use :) its easy🍓
the apps i use to edit my drawings are capcut (free) ibispaint X (free) and rarevision vhs (which i only payed $1 for)

for me, rarevision only takes videos and not photos, so i use capcut to make my drawing into a video first and then i put it into rarevision. (you press the 'play' button to import a video). rarevision has many types of different filters you can put on your videos, and if you click on the menu button you can adjust the color/blurriness/contrast to however you want.

and when thats done, i put it back into capcut to edit the colors/contrast

i also use ibispaint X to fix the cropping and adding a bit more filters like sharpening and stuff so it wouldnt be too blury.

hoped this helped ^_^

Could you make a tutorial on how you go about making your vhs screenshots? They look awesome and I want to try to implement that style in some of my own art. Thanks so much!!!
So i use clip studio and the settings i always see on other tutorials are only on photoshop (vibrance) so i baso made my own auto actions copying them and i've uploaded them. This will also be long becoz i always try make tutotials that I would want to see when looking up a tutorial.
Sketch ur scene. I don't worry about sticking to 1980s (or whatever era) framing or style choices usually. For backgrounds i can do a bigger tutorial but i basically use clips gouache or some watercolour brushes for blending. Ghibli and 1942 Bambi for the textures and don bluth etc for the colours as a rough guide. I use this blog for some references but also just searching '[film name] backgrounds' or something like 'ghibli snow/roads/grass'
So i draw the scene. Use a dark brown for inks. Duplicate that, fill with yellow, blur 5 and 30% opacity underneath. I copy the base layer/character layer, fill with same brown and blur so its a “drop shadow”
I also duplicate the shadows, blur one about 12-18 and set both to half opacity. Same with lighting. Any rim light is the Ink layer duplicated, filled white, overlay or glow it depends on what fits best, and the bits i dont want white erased.
All text is Arial yellow with a black border. My style of drawing varies a lot by i try for a fuzzy 80s fur look- like kosperry or don bluth i guess. thats what the 'cats' layer looks like ^^^.
Okay onto edits. Flatten image and duplicate in case u fuck up. Auto actions are linked above (i have the box ticked/the action closed to speed things up and only adjust the important bits)
Blur - gaussian, start mild and u can build up from there.
Fake vibrance- you can use saturation ig but this (to my knowledge) targets the light and shadow differently. I literally copied how the photoshop vibrance works. I use anywhere from 25-85 strength (mainly 40), it looks less saturated once u click okay so just experiment.
Chromatic abberation - I use this one. Move to liking and merge
Vhs 2 - this is the other auto action i made, it’s basically another blur, motion blur and some image adjustments.
Final additions - 1 is a noise layer (clip studio perlin noise), 2 is a free VHS overlay set to hue (find one with colours u like!), 3 is a new layer filled with a bright colour/colour that fits the vibe you are going for (here i used blue for the blue background + sunny vibes) set to lighten and adjust
and thats it for me!
Happy VHSing!
#please let me know if these autoactions work! there shud be two in the download!!!#warrior cats#vhs#ghibli aesthetic#retro aesthetic#art tutorial#vhs tutorial

Writing Notes: Glitch Art
Glitch Art - a type of media art where video and image files are already or intentionally corrupted to include glitches, creating a stylized viewing experience. What may look like an imperfection is the end goal and a result of the visual artist’s pixel sorting.
The glitch aesthetic includes:
elongated images,
pixelization,
color degradation, and
double exposure.
How to Create Glitch Art
Consider the following ways to create this unique form of visual art:
Digitally engineer glitches. Video editing software or apps can let you safely play with your hardware without damaging it. You can play with databending in video files in a photo or video editor and add in manufactured, intentional glitches.
Use magnets on screens. You can also play a video on a screen and employ a heavy-duty magnet, holding it close to the front to warp the pixels on the screen. Note that this has the potential to have long-lasting effects on the quality of your screen, so use this tactic wisely.
Work with broken devices. Damaged devices can yield the glitches that glitch artists seek in their media. Busted but still usable DVD and VHS players can warp the presentation of the video.
Forms of Glitch Art
Since glitch art is often not static, it takes forms outside of still .jpegs or .jpgs. Some forms include:
Glitch music: Glitch music involves the playing of distorted records, CDs, cassettes, or sound files that feature glitches, which may include skips or missing moments of music.
Glitch videos: Glitch videos are the most common type of glitch art, and you can create them by damaging e-files or hard media such as DVDs or video tapes. Artists can also warp videos by toying with a VHS or using magnets to distort pixels on the screen.
Glitch websites: These websites with errors coded within can make for more interactive pieces. Glitches spread throughout the website enhance the user experience and operate as a form of art.
A Brief History of Glitch Art
In technology, a digital glitch refers to a malfunction, often in video games or software development.
Intentional glitches: As technology evolved, artists harnessed the creative opportunities glitches presented and began deliberately incorporating them into various formats in the 1970s, popularizing an intentional glitch aesthetic. The Cubist movement influenced many glitch artists.
JODI: In 1994, Joan Heemskerk and Dirk Paesmans started the highly generative art collective JODI, which purposefully coded errors into website pages to display underlying error messages. The movement weny by the name “net.art.”
Global conventions: The glitch moment gained traction in the 2000s. The tech-art collective Motherboard hosted an international symposium for this new media style in 2002 in Oslo, Norway. In 2010, Nick Briz, Evan Meaney, Rosa Menkman, and Jon Satrom led the GLI.TC/H convention in Chicago with tutorials, performances, and screenings.
GIFs: Over the years, conventions have taken place in Minnesota, Croatia, and Iran, showing how popular the art form has become. Today, GIFS (.gifs), in many ways, echo some of the elements of early glitch art, where a single file repeats its media in a cyclical pattern.
Artists can use digital or analog modifications to create this type of modern art.
To produce glitch videos, artists distort pixels by placing large magnets near the screen or artificially create glitches in Photoshop.
Famous glitch artists include Len Lye, Daniel Temkin, Nam June Paik, and Rosa Menkman.

Any tips for post production on screencaps like the solid snake anime art?
I love the vhs look, but I only know how to do that in premiere, not in an art program.
I wondered how you did it.
for vhs effects I've been using an open source program called ntscqt! it's got a lot of options but for most of my art i start with this preset and mess with the sliders on the left after (ntscqt works with videos too, but it renders slow for longer videos)
prior to using this, if you have clip studio paint i made an auto action set (if you have trouble setting up auto actions i made a tutorial on it a while ago here) but with that i only need to use the line effect and retro blur buttons if i'm using ntscqt

Since the dawn of formalized armed combat there's been dudes selling their own brand of bullshit martial arts and marketing it as hidden or superior, like dueling treatises that involve the use and technique of various non weapons/uncommon "weapons," or like 80s VHS combat tutorials for divorced men with pent up aggression, it's not a new thing per se. But.
There's this guy I'm aware of who advertises "flexible tools" as superior EDC self defense. What does he mean by this? Well, to put it simply, a bit of rope with a metal bit at the end. Usually it's a round knob but lately he's been selling his little grappling hook doodads that are small enough to fit in your hand, and boy howdy some of the shit he claims they're good for truly boggles the mind.
Now, I'm no expert in the field of armed combat, but I am generally experienced and well versed in a variety of armed and unarmed combat. I know that sounds like tooting my own horn but really I'm just autistic about historical combat. Anyway there's a LOT of very good reasons why flexible weapons were never popular outside of a few small or strange examples, most of which are not... very clear on the use case scenario of such and are more given as a "wouldn't that be cool" type of example for displays of martial prowess.
Regardless, it does not take an expert to know that swinging a little metal C shape on the end of some paracord at an attacker is going to do little to nothing. Even if you confirm the hit, it's not buying you any distance or stopping power or giving you mechanical advantage over your opponent, and pain compliance is entirely reliant on whether or not you manage to somehow grappling hook a rib or something.
ALSO, consider that accessing or drawing a hook on a string from wherever you're keeping it is going to be near impossible to do in a combat scenario. Good luck and hope it doesn't get tangled lol also have fun unspooling it. He also shows off a few slashes with the lil hook before he's unspooled it to buy time but. Brother that is not how this works. That's getting you no where and maybe even getting u killed for escalating the situation with a weapon.
BEHOLD, THE ONLY ENEMY SUITABLE FOR FELLING USING A HOOK ON A STRING:
🐟 🐠 🎣 🐡
Do your research and training if you plan on carrying a weapon of any kind, don't trust social media self defense gurus.
#smokey talks#i have a lot more to say on this topic but its nothing i can form into coherent sentences that anyone wants to read lol#also im kind of hoping that guy gets in a fight with his little hook someday and#predictably#it gets wedged in someones back before they end up tackling him and restraining him lol

,,,,how do u get that fuzzy fuzz feel on ur art pieces,, is it just by usin’ noise? (As in static, I think)
oh! i experiment a lot with colors and effects (most of which i don't even remember the name SOB) but i can give you a summarized version of my steb by step on how i art
first of all, the colors!
here's the og, and you can probably see that in most of my art i tend to use grays and soft colors a lot and that's because it's easier for me to pick a 'theme' if you will? like 1 bright color that pops and the rest is a lot less harsh and that's what helps me define the contrary color and base my editing on that!
like here is where i usually choose my colors! but you can pick something darker and more saturated too idk i don't think it'll affect the end result- at least as long as you can change contrast and lighting in your program. i know color theory but not enough to explain it hhh :'D <333
so now use the wind tool on photoshop (there's some free editing versions online that will work just the same) and if you don't have or wanna use Ps, firealpaca and medibang have similar enough options- use motion blur, then the curves tool to make it look liiike
this! now blur the piece from a 5 to 10 range depending on how big your piece is, then you'll have that soft fuzzy outline! put some random static on top (very low opacity) then sharpen the whole thing if your art is very small like mine here so you can see details xD
use the lighten mode on your next layer and add a blue tint to the character (and leave the pop color untouched: here the yellow bg)
if you want a vhs look! and add more line-like static (just google static images and mess with colors/edit them yourself if you can't find any good options on your art program) and change up the hues and tints/contrast if you really wanna lean into the vhs asthetic like:
these! and add a 3D effect (or chromatic aberration? i think that's what the translation is cause my settings are in french xD do look it up if you can't find it on ibispaint, clip studio or whatever program you're using!)
i really suck at explaining so i don't consider this a tutorial, but mostly me rambling about effects and editing hhh but honestly? best advice i can give you is try every single effect you can and see how it looks with hues and color changers added on top of it!
stumble upon new effects and learn how to replicate them without needing to rely on special layers or tools if you're looking to improve your coloring!! >:Dc i only use these because my version of sai doesn't have a blur tool cause i pick the colors myself in most cases now :') but as i said i'm bad at explaining so hope it kinda sorta helped? a little? hhh<3333
#ask#tutorial#sorta?#my art#utmv#killer#killer sans#killer!sans#all these versions you see? that's how many i end up with when i finish editing my art- and i have to pick a favorite to post :'(((#i like them all but i can't really tell if this is actually useful HHH#sorry i'm skipping through some steps but also i deleted a whole paragraph cause gosh there's too many words and it's almost 2am where i am#so i can't proofread at all xD thank you so so much for passing by!!#glad you're interested in effects cause i love playing around with editing softwares and photoshop variants! try it out guys it's so fun<33

How do you do the VHS effect for the Chaoa Heart AU "screenshots"? I'd love a tutorial if you're comfortable with doing one!! ᐢᗜᐢ
Well here’s the thing on that, I don’t know how to make a proper VHS filter on the program I draw on that I think looks good, so I use a different program for that, and that program isn’t even for art at all.
I use Capcut, it’s free as far as I remember.
I use the filter named Betamax, which is in the TV section of the effects, and I adjust it as needed. Then I export it on the lowest graphics, capture it again and resize it onto a higher resolution so it’s not so small when posted
I figure there are other programs with a better way to do it, but Capcut has pretty decent retro filters so I like to use those

Title: The Knitting Trio - Mother's Day 2024
IMPORTANT NOTE: No #OnThisDay share post, today.
Hello, May! 🌏☀️ Its that day of the moms, again! 🤰👩🚺♀️ And I have this artwork, right here in a 90s style setting! 😁📼💿
• Truth be told, these three women had never met each other under the same roof, until now. 👩👩👩 In addition, they're all pregnant with their beloved children inside. 🤰 But, what are they doing while they're pregnant? 🤔Well, there are a lot of things to do while they're pregnant and I think I have the perfect activity; "Knitting". 🧶🧣😊 I was gonna say "Crochet" because my lovable mom always loves crocheting outside of our home, so yeah. When it comes to making huge lengths of the scarf (and other wearables) like what they're doing, "Knitting" is always king, or "QUEEN" because we're celebrating "Mother's Day". 😊 Rita had a little experience of knitting before she aimed at her dream career. But, with a little help from a tutorial by playing a few VHS tapes of the 90s, she can handle it like the mother she was. And she's passing her knowledge to her mommy besties. 😉🧶🧣
Rita 🐶🚺: Absolutely, tama (correct)! I used to be knitting back when I was my elementary school years. I was totally pag-ut-ot (suck) at knitting, and I given up my knitting experience to other hobbies that I've been dreaming of. Sa panahon ngayon (nowadays), with a help of VHS tapes and knitting manuals at my rightful age, I've perfected my pagniniting (knitting) skills, and I'll share my knowledge to my two kaibigang nanays (friendly mommies)! 😊 So, happy mother's day to all nanays! Tandaan (Remember): Your NANAY (MOM) will always LOVE YOU! ☝😁😘👩🤗
Well, that's all for now!

This is probably like. A weird thing to be concerned about, but like. The degree of polish and like. Quality in some of the recent entries to the V/H/S franchise sometimes is like… intimidating and feels like. I mean I don’t wanna tell people specifically to be worse at film making or anything, and it’s not like I think anyone broke rules making their entries I don’t think. But I think I mostly mean this to say towards audience members sometimes, ‘cause a lot of V/H/S is kinda *supposed* to be lower budget and experimental in comparison to blockbuster movies or whatever. That’s why the first one has that like “what the fuck?” Aspect to some of the shorts, they kinda feel like student films, because they were like… “gather some people up, get some relatively affordable equipment you can maybe rent, and go film on a rented set or out in the woods which is mostly free”
It feels cheap because it is cheap, and the cheapness makes it have that exact kind of horror vibe it was going for by being VHS. The more polished and high budget and impressive it gets, the less it feels like an experiment in cheapness.
I think there’s a really strong charm to the shorts that feel a little like “film makers create a student film” and I’m not using student film as an insult because I think there’s something really interesting and raw to the like. Sets and characters and costumes put together when you’ve got really really passionate, but broke and unpolished creators? When you’ve got like the cameras and equipment rented from the school and you’re filming it in the weird woods by your old house because you always thought they looked cool and wrote a lot of stories there anyway and now you’re trying to make one of them into a reality and the makeup person might just be your friend who spends too much money at Sephora so everyone voted them to be in charge of makeup and now they’re having a nervous breakdown because they only know how to do their own makeup and they’re looking up tutorials online for blood effects and actually really pulling it off and maybe figuring out something new about themselves.
One of the biggest personal expenses turns out to be a Cricut machine for the prop department but then the fact you don’t have to worry about carpal tunnel taking out your prop and costume department does make up for it eventually. Also someone made you a custom graphic T and you stop grumbling about the budget for a while.
Chances are also probably good you made a deal with the local produce shops to take the cabbage and melons that go bad for reduced price if you’re making a movie with violence, for all the free sound effects available online, it helps to have something live on the day. And head of cabbage or a melon works good on a low budget set.
It has been like two decades since I’ve been anywhere near even a low budget TV/Film set in Canada and I think some of these might be stage tricks instead. But still. There’s so much charm to them??? And it’s why I think a lot of horror fans love low budget horror.
(Also I should note, I was like. A youth working as an extra on a couple filming projects and took independent personal acting/filmmaking classes that taught me about aspects of the industry and tricks of the trade, but I never got super deep into anything. I saw how stuff was done and did some amateur filming projects which is how I learned how to fake things, but I never learned how big budget things were made. Everything I ever learned was cheap corner cutting for people making things on grants or for the passion of arts, not… uh. Millions or hundreds of thousands of dollars. I learned small Canadian Arts Film, not Hollywood Filmmaking. They were… not all encompassing and I am not positioning myself as an expert in anything… just… running my mouth like a know-it-all honestly.)
And like. I think most of V/H/S still accomplishes a lot of it. Praise Ratma.
It’s probably just a couple like… big sensational show stopping shorts by directors who really know how to work with their budgets more than like… any kind of change to the system. And the fact that I like it when it’s kinda messy and sloppy and shows the seams and the actors aren’t super great and the premise feels a little half baked? Not… fully bad because that “actually the cult was fake and the raid was a ploy by us, the sexy lady cops who are actually… big name sexy snuff film peddlers who’ve been profiting from all the sick twisted videos you’ve been watching and we’re gonna make out while killing you” was like. Running a full sprint into a wall, like they almost made it and then they just made a really bafflingly bad decision in the final moments to like. Completely derail that train at the station and I don’t think anyone was satisfied with how that ended.
I don’t think I have the most solid of a point, really, except that a lot of films are very big and polished and expensive lately. And horror is one of those last bastions of “no budget? No problem.” Mindsets. And I kinda love it for that. And I wanna see it continued. I wouldn’t mind it catching on to other genres again because too much of everything has to look and feel and seem high quality making the barrier to entry nearly impossible to pass. But, I hope V/H/S maintains its cheapness because it’s kinda integral to keeping horror accessible. It’s good, it’s fun, it’s experimental, it creates access to new voices.
Yeah going back to the early entries some of it is like “wow that’s pretty gross” but like. There’s a reason most of those characters died horrible deaths. They were shitty garbage trash people on purpose and you were supposed to hate them so when they were brutally murdered you didn’t feel too bad about being like “ohh my got holy shit” and probably doing the mix of laughing and wincing and screaming when the rapist gets his dick literally ripped off and thrown across the room you don’t really feel that terrible about your fear response also being kinda giddy and giggly.
I am overthinking this. Idk. I love this franchise. I hope it lives in cheap gritty gross weird glory forever. Anthology Horror is such a good genre.
#v/h/s#pointless navel gazing#I don’t know I just love weird shit#I wish more people were able to make more weird shit#I wish more people funded cheap horror anthologies and put them on large platforms#I need more small creators to get the chance to be experimental without huge risks#anthologies are perfect for that because you don’t have to have the whole thing riding on you
