i have suddenly become obsessed with a theme that HoO established but never proceeded to extrapolate on, which is:

Cyborgs and Identity

Ages ago I read the Brainship series by Anne McCaffrey and would often daydream myself into the role of a brainship. More recently there are the Imperial Radch books, with their AI-ships and ancillaries. And ART and Murderbot came along as well. Each of these stories has a slightly different take, but all of them contain enough similarities that they resonate with me in the same ways.

Reading I Sexually Identify as an Attack Helicopter reminds me of that same feeling.

I'm sure there are other stories like these, but these are the ones that I can recall. Do any of y'all know of similar types of stories that you enjoyed?

as for the trans part? i thought it’d be a neat little inclusion to his whole “trying to prove he’s not just a destructive weapon” struggle. the story has changed a bit over time, but the one I’ve landed on so far is: his creators didn’t see him as a real being, and he was created genderless, like most Legendary Pokemon are. After meeting Riolu, he realized he felt more masculine than anything else - and decided to say “hey, i actually DO want a gender instead of living without one like my creators intended”. I’d figure it’s not too uncommon for many genderless and/or manmade Pokemon in the ALTM universe to feel this way ^^

with the trans part, yes. Externally, he’s got a very supportive family and friend group - but there are still a few people out there who refuse to see him as a guy - or even a valid Pokemon, and only see him as some abomination to nature. His family’s always ready to decimate whoever doesn’t respect him, though. Internally, he’s gotten better with his self-doubt - but it still gets to him sometimes.

and the aroace part? also yes, but those struggles are pretty much exclusively internal. he’s accepted that as his identity and he’s happy with it, but there’s still times where he questions if he was always meant to be aroace, or if that’s just how he was programmed to be…
