So, as planned, Kate and Yelena were on your doorstep that night. You opened the door, welcoming your future sister-in-law and her friend.

"Natty, they're here!" You called your girlfriend.

As soon as the redhead you loved and adored made her way to the front room, she wrapped an arm around your waist as she waved to them.

"Natasha, Y/N," Yelena began. "This is Kate Bishop, my new roommate. Kate Bishop, this is my sister and her girlfriend,"

You smiled, leaning into Natasha's side.

"Nice to meet you, Kate!" You said.

"You too!"

The arrangement for tonight was that Natasha and Yelena would attempt to make dinner together, and she decided to bring Kate along so everyone could meet.

So now, the two sisters started heading for the other room. Kate saw this as the perfect opportunity to ask about what Yelena was talking about earlier, so she made her way over to you.

"Hey," she said.

"Hi,"

"So, Yelena said you explain really well why she's not into dating? We were talking about it earlier, and it'd be interesting to learn stuff!"

You smiled, nodding.

"Yeah, of course. So, have you ever heard of asexuality?"

Kate shook her head no, prompting you to chuckle.

"You're in for a night, be right back!"

Before she knew it, you were already running upstairs to get your laptop.

"Where are you going?" She called.

"To show you a slideshow presentation I made a few years ago about asexuality!"

Kate stared at the space you were once standing, a little bit confused. She looked to the kitchen, where Natasha had an eyebrow raised while Yelena was laughing her ass off.

"Oh Kate Bishop, I told you she was a nerd. Prepare yourself, that's all I have to say."

Just as you pulled up presentation and had it ready to go, your thoughts were interrupted by the sounds of screaming and Russian swearing.

You were at the bottom of the steps, so you quickly set your laptop to the side before running to the kitchen to see what was wrong.

If you were being honest, it really wasn't surprising to see an actual fire in the kitchen. You knew you shouldn't have left them in there unsupervised.

Luckily, Kate found a fire extinguisher in the midst of the arguing and came running.

Unfortunately for Natasha, she got caught in the middle and was now covered.

Yelena had to hold in laughter at the sight of her sister, while you and Kate were both staring with your jaws dropped.

You stood in the center of the kitchen, shifting your gaze between everyone.

"Natty," you said in a soft voice to your girlfriend. "You should go shower and clean up, I'll take care of dinner,"

She wanted so badly to attack her sister in this moment, but she held herself together for you and Kate.

As she began making her way upstairs, you turned to Kate and Yelena.

"Alright, you two are helping me. Kate, you wanted to learn about asexuality? Let's start by making the most iconic food that for some reason all aces love; garlic bread."

"Garlic bread is amazing," she muttered.

"And it's one of the many things beloved by the ace community," you told her, already getting the stuff out.

"So what exactly is asexuality?" She asked as she started washing her hands.

"Little to no sexual attraction; so basically when we see someone, there's not that feeling of wanting to do things with them sexually. Of course, we can find people attractive, but it's not the same," you explained. "It's like the same way you might find a sunset nice to look at. People can be nice to look at too! But there's no sexual desires from seeing them,"

"Alright," she said, nodding in understanding. "So you're asexual then? And Yelena is too?"

"Yep!" You replied, preparing the bread. Yelena nodded as well.

"But that still doesn't explain why Yelena doesn't want to date. 'Cause you're dating Natasha,"

You took a deep breath in, turning to face her.

"So there's different types of attraction, sexual and romantic among them. If you don't feel sexual attraction, you're asexual and if you don't feel romantic attraction then you're aromantic. you told her.

Yelena then stood next to you, a proud smile on her face.

"And that would be me," she said to her roommate.

"Okay, cool," Kate replied, finally putting the pieces together. "But what does that have to do with garlic bread?"

It took a lot to keep yourself from laughing, but you managed to do it.

"It started with cake," you explained. "People would say cake is better than sex, so it became a joke among the asexual community that we all loved cake. Then people started replacing it with garlic bread,"

"I was never made aware of this," Yelena said, her face falling.

"Well, I mean, do you follow ace meme pages? Do you even know about the Denmark invasion?"

Now, both Kate and Yelena were staring at you wide eyed.

"What invasion?"

You smirked; this was going to be interesting.

An hour later, Natasha had finally come out of the shower. As soon as she got dressed with her hair still wet, she immediately smelled the garlic in the air.

Soon enough, she came walking back down the steps.

"Why the fuck," she began, startling all of you. "Is there so much garlic bread?"

The three of you were back in the living room, surrounded by plates of pull-apart cheesy garlic bread as Yelena pointed to the whiteboard Natasha didn't even know she had.

"So, I will enter here and you will wait for my signal," the blonde assassin stated in a serious voice.

Natasha walked over to you, sitting down next to you.

"What's going on?" She whispered, almost concerned.

"Do you remember when I showed you that meme about invading Denmark, and how it was an ace thing?"

She nodded,

"I was talking to them about it while making dinner, and Yelena seems to be taking it very seriously,"

Natasha stood up, looking her sister in the eye.

"Yelena, you're not actually planning on invading a country, right?"

"Of course I am! Asexuals are 1% of the population, so that's 75 million. The Danish forces are 92,000 so we can easily overpower them. We will be creating the first asexual state free of hypersexualization,"

Natasha raised an eyebrow, looking back at you.

"The time is now!" Yelena said. "We must rise up. Kate and Natasha, you are safe but I cannot say the same for the others,"

It's just so fucking upsetting when people treat aphobia as a joke or a meme. It isn't. When I was in high school and everyone else became sexually active and I very much hated and feared the idea, no one ever said to me "it's okay to not want to have sex."

Instead, they said shit like "just get really really drunk any time your partner wants to do it and then you won't even have to really be there for it." Or "just close your eyes and deal with it until it's over" or, the worst real thing ever suggested to me:

"Go out and put yourself in a situation where you'll get raped and then your first time will be over with and every sexual experience afterwards will seem fine in comparison."

That's what someone said to me. I was about 17 at the time. All of those "solutions" apparently were more reasonable than just not wanting to have sex.

When my mom tried to have a discussion with me about why I shouldn't be sexually active, I assured her that I seriously had no interest in such things and that the entire idea of sleeping with someone made me uncomfortable. Despite not wanting me to have sex, the idea that I didn't even WANT to was apparently so shocking and concerning that she took me to our family doctor and tried to get her to put me on hormones.

My doctor, thankfully, told her that if I was happy not having sex then there was nothing to "fix."

I spent my whole life thinking there was something seriously wrong with me.

When I finally found out I wasn't the only one like this, I cried from relief. When I found out there was a name for it, the pressure to make myself into something I wasn't was so much easier to deal with. It was just like when I discovered I didn't have to like men. It was like discovering the queer community all over again, knowing there were others like me, that I wasn't alone, that I wasn't broken.

There was hatred from both the straight community and the queer community, but there was so much ace positivity at the time that it seemed things were looking up and improving. Then something changed.

I don't know when exactly the shift took place, but at some point the concept of aphobia became a meme. Like the idea of people being hated for this specific sexual orientation was so ridiculous that it was funny. The irony is that those people were usually very much aphobic themselves, but because they didn't see us as real people with real struggles they didn't see it as real hatred.

Aphobia being framed as funny created an environment where it was not only okay to hate asexuals, it was trendy and funny and encouraged. Asexuals were no longer people, they were no longer members of the community, they were a punchline. And if that had a problem with that? Well that was all the funnier.

I have faced transphobia in my life. My mom still refuses to use my name and pronouns and I'm terrified of violence any time I walk out the door. I still face homophobia, as I am dfab and engaged to someone who is also dfab. The difference with aphobia is that there is no escape from it. There is no safe space. It doesn't matter if the place I'm in is lgbt friendly, it doesn't matter if I'm among other trans people or other gay people. They'll hate me too. They'll mock me too. They'll tell me something is wrong with me or that I'm seeking attention.

I'd even go so far as to say I've had worse experiences in the lgbt community as an asexual person than I have among cishets. Cishets find it weird, sure, but some people in the queer community find it downright offensive that I exist.

The increase in hatred is just. Really depressing. Things seemed to be getting better but then they got so much worse than they ever have been and we can't even talk about it without some self-righteous jackass coming in to tell us how ridiculous we are for being upset about being mocked and shunned. Usually through a meme, because why the fuck not.

Anyway. That's my rant. I don't mind answering honest questions for people who are sincerely confused about asexuality or who feel they are misunderstanding something, but I'm not interested in arguing for the sake of it. I'm only posting this because a lot of people seem to think all of this really IS a joke, and I want to illustrate why it really isn't.
