headcanons of what I think the anipoke cast is up to in the future

Ash - Still traveling the world, on a journey to become a Pokemon Master, cuz ofc he is. He's changed his approach and focuses more on learning about Pokemon, but will still never say no to a good battle. Fights hard to stay World Champion. Occasionally still works for Cerise

Misty - She's still the leader of the Cerulean City Gym but she's slowly working up her way to becoming a Kanto Elite Four Member

Brock - Pokemon Doctor! Has been all over the place helping out at different Pokemon Centers over the years

Gary - He's a Pokemon Professor! Well known for all kinds of insane discoveries. He works under his Grandpa and eventually takes over the Lab. Still has a rivalry with Goh.

Tracey - He's Garys assistant now, make sthe lab very chaotic. Started taking art commissions on the side

May - Well known Top Coordinator who has won multiple Grand Festivals! But she still comepetes in contests and travels with the hoen coordinator gang

Max - Gymleader, he's taken over the Petalburg City gym! Dunno what his type though is, he can mix em if he wants to

Dawn - Also a well known Top Coordinator with multiple wins, and she still occasionally competes in contests. I like the idea of her getting into fashion and designing.

Paul - Either a Gym Leader or an Elite Four member, maybe even Sinnoh Champion, but definitely still battles

Iris - Contiunes to be Unovas champion, trying to snatch Ashs world champ title and learning about dragon types on the way

Cilan - S class connoisseur! Still likes traveling but also stays in Striaton a lot to help out in the café, though he doesn't act as gym leader anymore

Serena - Reining Kalos Queen and Pokevision influencer! Also her and Lisia are a pop star duo

Clemont - Not a gym leader anymore either, he's focused more on his inventions and becomes pretty well known for it

Bonnie - New Lumiose Gym Leader! I like to think she tried out both gym battles and showcases when she was old enough to go on her own journey, but ended up being drawn towards batrling a lot more. I also like the idea of her beconing Kalos champion eventually

Mallow - Pretty much took over Ainas Kitchen and started branding out their name to other Alola Islands

Lana - I kinda like the idea of her getting interested in acting after the gig she and the other sm girls had, still fishes with her dad for fun

Kiawe - Akala Islands newest Kahuna! Contributes to keeping the Alola league tournament alive as well. He doesn't have much time to help with the farm anymore but still delivers milk every morning

Sophocles - Works at Pokemon NASA, far off from going to space but he'll get there

Lillie - I am very attached to Lillie being a teacher at the Pokemon school, but I also like the idea of her writing books. Either way she does something booksmart tm

Gladion - Works at the AF, got sucked into the family buisness and researching UBs after Lillie the Nihilego

Goh - Cerises assistant still working for his own Professor title and more than mildly upset at the fact Gary managed to get there before him, he specialices researching species that were discovered more recently and has an always increasing of his own Pokemon to look after

Koharu - Since she doesn't have a canon long term goal, her story line was moreso about figuring out what she wants to do, that kind of makes her a catch all character. I can see her do anything really she works with whatever. Ik she helps out her dad as a research fellow at the end of the series and I also like her getting more into contests but I don't really think she does either of those forever? I like the idea of her doing photography, it's artistic in the opposite direction of what her mom does

\ it’s funny how drastically different Ash and Raihan’s tolerance to spice is. Raihan is more then happy to eat a jalapeño pepper raw while Ash can’t stand it.

\ they try and make grocery shopping a chore they do together. Not because one is inherently bad with picking out food for their Homie but because the both forget separate little things the other remembers. It’s also a nice way for them to just take a little bit of a break from all their work. Something mundane and easy.

\ they host a lot of dinner’s for all their friends and family during fall and summer but both tend to be a bit recluse during winter and spring.

\ Ash is by no mean’s a morning person, has despised getting up before ten in the morning all his life so far, but he is the first one up and out of bed when their shared alarm goes off.

- Raihan set’s the alarms when their in Galar during Ash’s off season as Alola’s Champion and Ash’s sets it when Raihan is with him in Alola during his off season.

\ Raihan is never allowed to hold Ash’s plants. He’s shit with them and also Ash hasn’t forgiven him for killing his monstera Cynthia got him for 21st birthday after he left it in Raihan’s care because it was too big to bring back to Kanto so his mom could watch it.

- it’s funny because the Galarian had absolutely done his best to take care of the plant, yet it still died.

/\TA!au the class see’s Raihan as some sort of awkward dad friend. Kiawe and Sophocles are weird around him while Mallow and Lana are very skeptical about his intentions with their friend. Lillie seem’s to be the only person with no beef with him and they get along great, both vibing in blissful silence most often then naught instead of the natural awkwardness that occurs between people that only have one mutual friend. Though Ash would call it a stretch to call the class his friends instead of just students and kids.

\-TA!au if Raihan was ever considered more of a permanent partner to Ash, there would be a lot of beef from Alola as a whole. Ash has a lot of admirers and secret crushes on the island it’s ridiculous. It’s a lot of passive aggressive comments but nothing really said out right. Gladion had tried it only once and Ash was on him like a rabid Lycanroc.

/\Non-hoa!au it took Ash buying his own home and to be able to live and love in it without the burden of past memories to be able to settle. Oh he still gets the craving to travel. Always has and always will, Raihan knew that the moment when he agreed to a committed relationship with Ash, but now Ash craves of home.

\-Non-hoa!au Raihan sends videos of him talking to himself or telling Ash about his day as he shops through the market or Milo’s family store. It’s like a point in the week and he always makes sure that Ash has time available, which the Kantonian always tries to have. Keeping constant time of both Galar and where ever he is at so Ash can visualize when Raihan will most likely call.

\-Non-hoa!au Ash is also always consulted on almost every piece of furniture for the house. Decorations is a hodgepodge of stuff that Raihan likes and what he thinks Ash likes. 8/10 times it is and the other two times Raihan is teased mercilessly.

\ there’s very little time where Raihan is the little spoon. Usually behind “held” by Ash is him laying directly on top of the other. Either on the couch during a movie or in bed with Ash propped up on a bunch of pillows while he works on stuff or even takes calls since Alola’s time zone is so different from Galar.

- Raihan doesn’t like to lay like that to often because he has a fear of crushing Ash when they eventually fall asleep but it’s one of Ash’s favorites because he gets to play with the buzzed parts of Raihans hair cut.

I usually don't care about the anime, but considering this is about Ash retiring and new protagonists taking the reigns, I figure I may as well pay attention

So first off

They're doing something specifically for the I Choose You! AU. It's not connected to the usual series because look at Ash's eyes and clothes. The clothes are the same as the movie, but most importantly Ash's eyes aren't huge and orange, which conflicts with the artstyle we usually see.

Riko (girl) and Roy (boy). There's a few things to look at here

First off, Rio has a hair clip that looks just like the green thing on Ash's og hat

Second, she has a jewel around her neck that looks like either some sort of Thunder Stone (which would be significant if she's at all related to Ash, and I personally think she looks like Serena? But that's probably an art style thing) or some kind of Terra crystal shard. I think it's most likely the Terra crystal shard given it's cut and the relevance to the current game.

Next, Roy. Pokémon has this thing where they make characters that look alike but have nothing to do with each other sometimes, so I'm probably just seeing things. however comma I see a resemblance to Kiawe with the skin tones, black and red hair, red eyes, and overall black and red outfit motif. Could be related, probably won't be.

Couple extra things

Okay so it'd be simple to say that these two would just be SV protagonists, right?

Well, wrong

First off, Riko has a school uniform that is completely different from Uva or Naranja Academy

Second, look at these babies. Beautiful, right?

Only two of these are in the DATA for SV. Not even the pokedex. This tells me that these two might literally have a huge pick of the litter for their first Pokémon.

Lastly, not only is Rayquaza not in the pokedex in SV, it's not related at all to the games, AND it's shiny, which in the series we've only seen in the Hoopa movie and in Alain's mega Hoenn thing back in gen 6

Why does this matter? Simply put

Ash saw a legendary Pokemon in the FIRST episode of the series that had NOTHING to do with him until maybe gen 2, let alone an actual encounter with it until the I Choose You movie.

I think Shiny Rayquaza will serve a similar role here: a one in a billion encounter to send them on a huge journey. We know there's multiple legendaries of the same kind, but even in the anime, they're still pretty rare, especially shiny pokemon, and double especially SHINY legends.

BUT I think that journey is probably going to be somewhere completely random. Could be like Journeys where it's around the world, could be some place completely different. Could be Kanto, I kinda hope not, but that Is on the table. It could be Paldea and they're freestyling it like Houndour and Typhlosion in Hoenn pre Emerald, but I don't think that's the case given the lack of uniforms. My personal bet is another Journeys type anime.

PWC/WCS: Friend and Rivals classes

So I had a random idea of I try to think where Ash’s old rivals and friends would be ranked if they were in the Pokemon World Championships/World Coronation Series

To kinda explain my rankings

Low: means you got in the class but you're nowhere near consistent to move up (if 3 battles, the record would be 1-2, a win to stay there but not enough to move up)

Mid: means you're even in that class (win one, lose one, win one, draw, lose one) you're at the point where unless you make changes you're stuck in that class

High: means they're doing well in that class but can't beat the top of that class or at least the gatekeeper battle (like a 3-1 record)

For power reference

Normal class had Visquez as a substitute for Lt Surge a Gym leader, and Korinna a gym leader with a Mega Lucario making it the “gym leader class”

Great Class had Iris the Unova champion as a gatekeeper lol but she was filling the role of a 8th gym leader narratively so trainers like Claire, and Juan could be here so the top gym leader/League Trainer class

Ultra Class had Volkner, Bea, Drasna, and Raihan meaning this is more or less the Elite four class

Kanto/Johto

Misty: Middle of Ultra Class

She's a tough gym leader, and has Mega evolution but hard to say she's an elite four level which is where I would think the high ultra class are

Brock: Low UltraClass

Similar to Misty but not as battle ready

Ritchie: Low Great Class

Good enough to get out of normal class but can't go past the great class

Gary: Low Ultra Class

Like Brock tough battler but not as consistent to move higher

Vincent: Mid Great Class

Seems strong, hard to predict growth but will grant the average of the PWC trainers

Harrison: Mid Great Class

Similar to Vincent, I think a lot of league trainers go here as they can't beat the top trainers but can beat the normal-class trainers

Hoenn

Morrison: Mid Great Class

League trainer logic

Tyson: High Great

League trainer logic but since he won can see him on that fringe of entering Ultra but just can't get over that hump

Sinnoh

Paul: High Ultra Class possibly Master Class

Saw he can still battle Master Class Ash but it was a training battle so don't know how much to take seriously

Barry: High Great Class

League trainer but can see fringe like Tyson

Nando: Low-Mid Great Class

Just because of legendaries have to give him some power, hard to say he's elite four level so not giving high ultra class level

Good battler but since he didn't get an upgrade like Brock and isn't even the strongest gym leader in Unova so can't have him higher

Trip: Low Ultra Class

Taking some growth into consideration can see him being skilled enough to make it there but not able to consistently win

Stephan: High Great Class

Good trainer couldn't beat ayone in Ultra class though

Cameron: High Great/Low Ultra Class

Too inconsistent, a good trainer can win the gatekeeper battle but wouldn't be consistent in ultra-class and maybe even drop out

Virgil: Low Ultra Class

Can see him making it out of the Great class with his type diversity but the ultra-class power difference is too much for someone with presumably no gimmick (Eevee z-move?)

Kalos

Clemont: Low Ultra Class

Clemont said he battled Drasna but got destroyed so unless he battled her early in like great class or something he battled her in the ultra-class so I would say he's in there and she was highly ranked so he was at least middle but Low feels better if he got destroyed

Tierno: High Great Class

League trainer and I can't see him beating anyone in ultra class

Trevor: Low Great Class

League trainer, I can see him beating a Korinna but not past that

Sawyer: Low Ultra Class

He can break that great class gate but wouldn't excel in Ultra class

Alola

Kiawe: Low Ultra Class

Z moves help a lot but are not able to beat anyone in ultra consistently

Gladion: Low Ultra Class

same as Kiawe, maybe a bit higher

Lana: Low-Mid Great Class

League trainer but in a weirder league and power boosts with Z moves

Mallow: High Normal Class

Not a battler, z moves will give her wins but hard to imagine she could beat a Korinna

Lillie: Mid Normal Class

Similar to Mallow but has a weaker Pokemon tbh

Sophocles: Low-Mid Great Class

Same as Lana

Kukui: Mid-Ultra Class

Hard to scale him as he just scales to SM Ash, but giving him the High gym leader, low elite four level seems right, can see high ultra class if viewed as a lower champion leveled trainers like Raihan and Wallace

That's my guesses obviously some can be adjusted, some think Gary is really high ultra, all the league winners should be high ultra etc

I just really considered that Ash took a jump from Sun and Moon to Journeys so league winner isn't as high as some think it is to me, and gym leaders and other similar trainers are not be underestimated with examples like Volkner

Bonus: Anabel Mid Ultra Class, Casey Normal Class, Lyra and Khory Low Great Class, Bianca Mid Great, Mairin Normal Class,

[For Goh] Saw the post about Misty not letting you into the Ash Ketchum experience group chat... She’s is his first traveling companion. Stuck with Ash through Kanto, the Orange Islands, and Johto. Currently the Cerulean City Gym Leader. You’ve heard the story of how Ash and Pikachu saw Ho-oh on the first day of their journey, right? Well. What he might not have told you is that they got chased by a Spearow Flock right off a cliff. Luckily, there was a river to break their fall. Misty fished them up and had her bike stolen by Ash. He was trying to get to the Pokemon Center faster while getting away from the Spearow Flock... The bike got fried in a storm-boosted Thunderbolt from Pikachu.

As for the proving yourself thing, Misty saved Ash from drowning in the Shamouti Incident. She’s not really my favorite of the traveling companion since she stole Togepi technically.

Does that help clear anything up about what Misty is to Ash?

Goh: Eehhhhh... not really?

Why would she want to travel with him if he fried her bike? And plus, I've saved Ash from danger (or just general irresponsibility) many times, myself! Shouldn't I be allowed to join the group, too?

I should ask Kiawe to vouch for me or something, I've already "proven myself" to him, at least

Ash: She said it was because she wanted me to pay for her bike's repair! But then she seemed really sad when I actually did it

Top three gym leaders of each generation?

Hi there @ladyseychelles! Favorite gym leaders...let's see here Kanto 1. Blue: not much surprise here, Blue's going to end up in my favorites for just about anything he's applicable of. There's something really cool about having a gym leader with no defined type. Not to mention just seeing the demeanor change from Gen 1 to Gen 2 was just so amazing

2. Brock: admittedly this is more from the anime, but I just really loved the big brother mentor vibes he gave to Ash, and then May, Max, and Dawn later on.

3. Blaine: Again this is mainly because of the anime, but his battle with Ash was easily the best of the original series Johto 1. Jasmine: If there was a gym leader I would love to emulate, it'd be Jasmine. I really love the "silk hiding steel" personality of hers

2. Morty: So um...I'm a Morty simp. He was one of my first anime crushes like ever. Also, he trains ghost types which is one of my favorite types so I have to stan.

3. Clair: She's a badass dragon tamer with a Kingdra. That's all I have to say.

Hoenn: 1. Norman: So the gen 3 games were the first mainline Pokemon games that I ever got a chance to play and Norman was absolutely so hard for me to overcome. It took me so many tries (because I was a noob who didn't know what she was doing). Also, there's just something really cool about having to defeat your own parent for a gym badge. And he's a top tier dad in the anime (we don't talk about Pokespe!Norman...fuck Pokespe!Norman)

2. Tate and Liza: This is pretty much mainly because I really enjoy double battles a lot and getting to have double battles against two gym leaders was just super cool

3. Flannery: I adore her so much. She's just a new gym leader trying her best! That and as a kid, I just adored her outfit (I still do honestly) and wanted to dress up as her

Sinnoh 1. Roark: He's an adorable rock nerd. I like rock nerds, I like guys that look good in glasses. Plus seeing baby Roark as a kid in the anime melted my heart but also his story with feeling like he couldn't get his dad's respect

2. Maylene: This is from the anime but I absolutely adored her arc about learning to regain self-confidence especially after what Paul said to her. Plus her bonding with Dawn over their shared issues was really sweet

3. Volkner: I really adore his relationship with Flint (especially in the anime) but also I can relate to him being burnt out and bored of life. And also he has a Luxray. I have to stan anyone with a Luxray. Unova 1. Lenora: One of the toughest battles of Unova but also I just adored her being a badass nerd who runs a museum and is happily married. Minus the whole mammy stereotype controversy with her original design with the apron it just really meant so much to me as a black girl into Pokemon to have someone who looks like she could be in my family. And that outside of the fortunate design she wasn't a walking stereotype. A smart bookworm who had a loving husband and was tough? I adore Lenora a lot. 2. Clay: Part of this is because he is a ground-type gym leader and there just aren't a lot of ground-type specialists in Pokemon. But also I like his gruff but still, kind personality and the fact that the English localization gives him somewhat of a southern accent makes me happy since I'm from the Southeastern United States 3. Elesa: I really appreciated not only her toughness in battle but also how she tried to help Bianca out when her dad tried to force her to come home. That and also I really loved both of her gym designs. Kalos 1. Grant: he was honestly the toughest fight for me in XY. HIs gym is also one of the most creative I've seen in the franchise

2. Clemont: This was mainly due to the anime but I just really adored this little nerd so much

3. Ramos: He's a funny cute old man and I really liked his gym Alola (I know there are no gym leaders but I'll do the trial captains) 1. Kiawe: I thought his little challenge with the dancing Alolan Marowak was super cute. But also in the games, I just really felt for him trying to make his dream of dancing come true and getting fired from the supermarket...ouch. And then his relationship with his baby sister in the anime is just the cutest

2. Mallow: I enjoyed her difficult Totem Lurantis trial but her anime depiction was what really sold me on her. Between her mom's death and her dream to open up a restaurant she just really endeared herself to me

3. Mina: I just really enjoyed her "chill go with the flow, low key kind of stoned" vibe. Galar (probably the hardest one to choose since I genuinely love all of the gym leaders there) 1. Kabu: I really loved his catching gym challenge, the fact that the inner part of his gym has a whole track (I'm a former track andfield athlete). Plus he's from Hoenn and I love the Hoenn region. Also I really just enjoyed hearing his of stories him just always trying new things and that even though he has yet to become champion, he's still really respected and seen as the first major roadblock in the league

2. Raihan: Again I'm a sucker for double battles, so getting a chance to do those for the entire gym was cool. Plus I just enjoy his character of being fierce on the pitch but gentlemanly history nerd outside of it all. Plus he's a dragon tamer and I'm just a sucker for dragon tamers

3. Opal: Oh my I adore granny Opal. I said this on Twitter but she's in my opinion of the best well written female characters in the series. She's a strong gym leader to have held the position for 70 years, she's funny and extremely insightful and I enjoyed the quiz format she had for her gym since there were consequences to getting questions wrong.

Now you've been asked what you do like about him what about the opposite what don't you like about goh?

Aw man, this is gonna hurt.

TL;DR - Goh’s a completely lovable character, but I have three particular issues with him that I feel could become worse if not taken care of properly.

First off, DISCLAIMERS!! To all my fellow Goh fans, please know that writing this, I do not mean any hatred to Goh in anyway. I LOVE Goh, and if you’ve seen literally ANY of my past anipoke posts, you would already know that. These are just issues I find with his character that I want to be changed for the best.

Now with that outta the way, here’s what I don’t like about Goh:

1. His iffy character development. While he’s doing fine in becoming more open to people and more willing to help Pokemon, his fighting skills are what I have trouble with it. Let’s go back to his first ever official battle.

It was at Hoenn’s Frontier Cup where he used Scorbunny and Scyther against a trainer’s Mightyena. Despite having a type advantage with Scyther, he lost horribly, which is completely understandable. He’s a beginner and doesn’t possess the same kind of street smarts and experience Ash and many other trainers have. Alright then, so maybe this will lead to a change in character of wanting to become better in battles by getting some training with Ash, who made quick work of that Mightyena trainer. Surely we’ll get some development over this topic after this episode!

He beats Saffron City’s Karate Master and scores a free Hitmonchan.

...Okaaaay, I mean, we’ve never seen the Karate Master in battle before, so perhaps it was just another fodder trainer the anime is filled of. I sure we’ll get some more Goh development after thi-

He easily defeats and captures a powerful Flygon.

.....Alright, alright, it was only a wild Pokemon. Everyone can beat those, right? Heck, in the next episode, he technically suffers a curbstomp loss against Kiawe and admits he only battles Ash every so often. Perhaps this loss will encourage Goh to train more with Ash so he could become a stronger trainer. I mean, despite his good luck with Pokeballs, he’s gonna need to be as strong as he can be for tougher mons, like Legendaries. I’m 100% sure we’ll get something out of thi-

He takes down a wild Zapdos and NEARLY captures it.

.........Uh, okie dokes, it wasn’t a successful capture, and who knows? Even though we have not seen him battle/train that much on-screen, maybe he just got a little lucky. Even in the games, it happens to the best of us. Perhaps this barely missed victory will finally give Goh the time to actually development more on-screen so that he could have a better chance agai-

He defeats Oleana’s Milotic, using his fire-type Raboot who only wanted to use a weak fire-type move.

..............Allllriiiiight, maybe Oleana just got a little cocky later on. Plus, Raboot finished Milotic by evolving in Cinderace and finishing it off with Pyro Ball. With this powerful evolution in hand, maybe Goh will finally realize that, in order for Cinderace to reach its greatest potential, he must start training for once and obtain some proper development for a chance against stronger threa-

Cinderace fights decently well against Mewtwo, even lasting longer than Pikachu and being on-par with the more trained Lucario.

....................At this point, I’m all out of excuses for him. Overall, Goh’s development as a trainer is very rushed to the point seeing him achieve numerous victories despite all odds being against his favor to be iffy.

2. Slightly touchy topic, but there are some negatives with his whole catching all Pokemon goal. So Goh wants to catch every single mon he can in order to reach up to Mew, as he said to Mewtwo in episode 46. And yes, this includes Legendaries as well. Unfortunately, this is where my issues with his goal starts. First off, where in the world will Goh keep any Legendary he encounters? Cerise’s glorified garden dome? Yeah, keep Dialga and Palkia, literal beings of space and time, inside a glass dome with a bunch of weaker mons. And speaking of which, wouldn’t catching mons like the Creation Trio or the Island Guardians cause quite the upset in, well, y’know, the natural balance of things? Sure, Goh technically hasn’t caught a single Legendary yet (Eternatus doesn’t count because it had to be sealed away), with how the anime is playing out, issues like this will surely rise throughout the series.

And yes, the anime is playing it out for Goh to indeed catch every single mon before reaching Mew. If you pay attention to the openings as well as many of Goh’s own character moments, such as episode 46, then you can easily see the signs telling us that Goh is bound to catch them all, just as Ash is bound on defeating Leon. In the past, pretty much all of Ash’s traveling companions had their own goals as well, but it’s usually because of those goals is why they leave Ash by the end of their journeys, like May and Dawn pursuing contests in other regions, Brock wanting to become a doctor, Iris wanting to find more Dragon types, Kiawe wanting to become an Island Kahuna etc. Because of that, it becomes up to the audience’s interpretation (and fanfics) on how they achieve their dreams and what challenges they could face throughout the way. With Goh, there will a lot more focus and emphasis placed on his goal, and while this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it’s too bad there aren’t really any stakes or obstacles in Goh’s journey!

Really now, another glaring issue with Goh’s goal is that he has NO trouble going through with it at all. From his very first fodder capture, all he has to do is get a good throw and then PING! Pokemon caught. Guess the thing of having to weaken a Pokemon first before capturing it has been retconned out of the anime forever. With that said, there’s absolutely no struggle for Goh to overcome in his journey, which kinda makes things boring. Where’s the challenge? Where are his rivals? Are there any doubts? Does he have any issue of having to catch and connect every single mon in existence? No, well then good for him I guess! Sad thing too is that he catches so many Pokemon with so much potential, but they then disappear completely after their debut.

Remember that free Hitmonchan he scored from Saffron’s Fighting Dojo who seemed completely willing to train with Riolu and Farfetch’d? Never seen again. That female Raichu who loves giving berries? Completely forgotten about. That Aerodactyl Goh resurrected and bonded with before catching? Thanos snapped. The Heracross Goh obtained from a trade at the cost of a second Pinsir he worked hard to find? Literally who?

3. And my biggest issue with Goh. The fact he’s somehow on the same scale as Ash.

Don’t believe me? Well, let’s go back to the ending of episode 46. After Mewtwo teleported him, Ash, Pikachu, Lucario, and Cinderace back home, Goh said this: “We’ve still got a long way to go.”

Excuse me, but WHAT?!?!?!

You BOTH got a long way to go, even though you both suffered a complete curbstomp from a mon that would probably even make the likes of Lance, Cynthia, and Leon comparable to Youngster Joey?!?! What the Distortion World?!?! Why is Goh and, by extension, the writers implying he and Ash are on even terms when it comes to being a trainer? Goh, as a reminder, you literally only began your trainer career 45 episodes ago!!

Alright, let’s talk about Ash for a second and what he’s been through since he started his trainer career. Ash started in Kanto, and while he really only fairly achieved three out of his eight badges (Brock and Misty’s were givens, Erika’s was a thank-you gift, Sabrina’s was all Haunter’s doing, and Jessie and James are complete jokes that no one should take seriously), he still partook in as many battles as he could against tough trainers while getting some pointers from the much more experienced Misty and Brock. After that, he went on to become a much more impressive trainer in later journeys. Instead of a full recap, I’ll just list two impressive things Ash has done in each region he’s journeyed through after losing in the Kanto League.

Orange Islands: Won his first official double battle with Pikachu and Charizard despite neither initially getting along at first and then defeated the Orange League champ, Drake.

Johto: Survived an entire forest of bloodthirsty Ursaring with his friends and defeated Gary’s Blastoise with his Charizard.

Hoenn: Helped stopped both Team Magma and Team Aqua’s elemental threats and reached Top 8 in the Hoenn League despite only two of his mons being fully evolved with one being a glass cannon bird.

Kanto again: Conquered the Battle Frontier and tied with May in his first ever contest.

Sinnoh: Helped protect a Riolu from the famed Hunter J and knocked out two of Tobias’ Legendary Pokemon.

Unova: Defeated Iris’ Dragonite twice (Charizard pretty much had the high ground in their fight) and helped protect Meloetta.

Kalos: Defeated four Mega Evolutions (Lucario, Abomasnow, Absol, and Sceptile) and was one of the main heroes against Lysandre.

Alola: Became an Ultra Guardian and conquered the Alola League.

And right now as of Journeys: Defeated Korinna’s Mienfoo and Mega Lucario with only Dragonite right after the two curbstomped Gengar and defeated Chairman Rose.

And this isn’t even scratching the surface, and yet, somehow, Ash is still on the same scale of Goh. This doesn’t make any logical sense, it completely negates Ash’s experience while over-wanking Goh’s, and it ruins any semblance of power scaling between the two. Logically, Ash should be leagues above Goh and the latter should always confide to Ash whenever he needs assistance or pointers, not “Oh, we both lost to a powerful legendary, guess that means we both have stuff to learn and we’re both beginners lul”. It’s like Deku and All Might both losing a villain that’s beyond both of their capabilities, and then Deku saying that they BOTH have much to learn afterwards! Does it make sense? HECK NO.

If they had to have Goh comment about their loss, why couldn’t he say something that would’ve made more sense? Maybe say something like “Wow, I can’t believe I lasted that long, honestly.” And then Ash would say, “Hey, you’re only getting better. And me and my team will always be there in case you need more training.” Have the two acknowledge the fact that even trainers like Leon wouldn’t fare any better than them against Mewtwo. Just absolutely anything that doesn’t completely ruin what we know of these characters to the point the two are considered equals, despite all the evidence saying otherwise.

The sun was bright, the waves were cool, and the sand burned on his bare feet. But nevertheless, Ash Ketchum inhaled. He loved the sun, sand, and the Alolan air. It was always nice to come back to Alola. Nice to come back to the fresh ocean air and the warm breeze. It was nice to not have to bundle up in the Kanto cold for once.

Pikachu dipped his paws in the salt water, laughing as the ocean tickled his feet. He made a game of hopping over the waves and laughed when he got a little spray. Ash laughed, too, and went to pick his buddy up.

They were more in the tourist area of Alola. The place where the businessmen worked, the resorts were full of people like his mother once was, and the shops all tacky. It wasn’t the same warmth that he felt when at Mallow’s or at Lana’s. It certainty wasn’t the same feel as Kiawe’s farm. But he had been dropping off some league work for the professor, and he couldn’t help but stop to take in the Alolan atmosphere. Plus, he got side tracked by some of the best ice cream.

He was putting his shoes back on when he heard a brief bit of Kantonese. A shiver hit his spine. After all, he wasn’t used to hearing the language out here. Sometimes Kukui would speak a little of it. But usually only when Ash couldn’t remember certain words. No, this voice was deep. Rough.

“Oh. my. Arceus. Ashton?” The voice was deep, but perky. “Ashton Ketchum, is that you?” Eyes went wide and round. He had run a hand through the same messy locks that matched the younger. “I didn’t know you were in Alola!” He goes to wrap his arms to the boy, who instantly shrinks back.

“I was here for work. A work meeting and I find my son here of all places! Oh, I bet I know why you’re here,” he boasts. Ash gulps, eyes falling on some billboard. “Alolan King, is that right?” He nudges his young son. “I bet your ol’ Auntie wants you here for that.” He boasts as if he’s proud of remembering an ancient memory.”

“Uh--I’m actually---erm---”

He waves off..

Somehow Ash gets trapped into a stupid pageant with his father. Somesort of bonding activity. His eyes look at his beloved pokemon who looks back with sadness.

He hates how this makes him feel. But every word is being held like a choking breath. He can’t say yes, or no, or anything. His arm is yanked and pulled and his head starts spinning. His head rapidly starts going in motion and hes so upset, so anxious, so mad. He can’t escape. He can’t move.

Which is how he found himself staring at some boy in the mirror that he couldn’t stand the look of. He doesn’t know how to say no to his father because his father won’t accept it as such. He can’t go to Kukui, because the nice card is being played and no one understands. No one gets this forced feeling. Everyone thinks it’s so great his dad is here and Kukui smiles at the man and tells him how delighted he is to have him.

Brown eyes meet brown in the mirror and Ash can’t stand the boy looking back. He hears a brief bit of the phone call and he gets sick. Of course. “Del, why didn’t you tell me Ashton made so much with these things? What do you mean it’s none of my business? I’m his father of course I have a right to know!”

Ash’s eyes flame up. it’s not about bonding, not anymore. It’s about flaunting, about status. His hands grip tight to the  nail scissors used to trim Lei’s fingers. Ash grips it and in anger hacks the sides up, the front, any bit that could appear nice. He hates this, and he sees the window open and jumps,Pikachu clung to his shoulder.

He runs until he land at the hideout. He needs someone, someone who isn’t Kukui, who isn’t someone fooled by an act. He knocks on the door and his eyes are streaming with tears. He knows the hacked mess probably will make light of things, but he just needs someone to listen. He needs someone who can’t see the false outside.

“Gu-Guzma?” Ash weeps to the closed door. His eyes are red and streaming. He can’t believe he found him here. That his father ran into him of all places. That he wants to bond with his son but not really. He wants to flaunt his son. His son he never saw, never cared to.

Ash pleads at the door, threading fingers through the hacked up mess. “Please.”

Gale’s Top 8 Gym Leaders

Rules:

1. One per Region. For the sake of Alola, I will be picking between a Trial Captain or a Kahuna (I can pick a Kahuna as long as they are not an Elite 4 member)

2. If the gym leader was a champion or an Elite 4 member at any point, they don't count. So Iris, Wallace and Blue are not eligible for the list, as well as Koga.

3. This is my Personal opinion, and I have a bias.

4. I will be ranking the Gym Leaders based on their Game appearances only. Anime and Manga do not count.

8. Kiawe (Alola)

The second trial captain on Akala island.

Honestly, while I love the change of pace with Trial captains instead of Gym leaders... it did feel like a huge piece was missing when playing through Sun and Moon. Kiawe provided a hilarious trial as well as what I found to be the most amusing Trial challenge. 

He also just has the second coolest design.

(If not for my self imposed rules I would have picked Olivia but she is sadly an elite 4 member so I will pick one of her trial captains instead)

7. Clemont (Kalos)

The electric Gym leader in the biggest city in Kalos. Lumiose City.

His gym has the most interesting gimmick, with a quiz show that made nostalgic for another genius Gym leader, but what set him apart and put him on this list was his dynamic with his little sister bonnie. The two are a delight when playing off each other and Clemont is actually a decent fight in the game, unless you have been spamming mega evolutions. 

He also has a unique design with the backpack, and he is one of the few on this list hurt by the fact I am not putting anime appearances on here, since he is my third favorite companion for Ash.

6. Volkner (Sinnoh)

The final step before the elite four.

Volkner is the Electric Gym leader of Sunyshore.

He is said to be strong enough to challenge the elite four. His personal Rival, Flint is a member of the Elite four.

At the time the trainer arrives, he has been on a winning streak where no one has been able to best him for a while and he found it super boring, when you talk to him he says that if he wins one more battle, he will go an challenge the Elite four.

His fight is also quite a tough bout regardless of which version you pick, his team is fast and has a lot of super effective moves, so if you think a few earthquakes will be enough to take him down, you best be packing some durable Pokemon.

He also just looks like a serious rival in an anime so its all the more fun to crush him. 

5. Elesa (Unova)

I have a crush on Elesa, Fight me.

Yes I know another Electric type Gym leader, but damn it they are the more interesting ones.

This model/ Gym leader of Nimbasa is a hella badass strong woman that will call out injustice anywhere she sees it.

She helps Bianca escape her a**hole father, Her first Gym is a roller coaster, then a Walk way!

She also Loves Puns! (Yes I am a simple man okay. Don't @ me)

She even goes through multiple costumes which is always a plus. Out of the rather mediocre line up of gym leaders in Unova, Elesa is a shocking change of pace. 

4. Raihan (Galar)

The dragon gym leader of Galar, and the undisputed Strongest Gym Leader in the region.

The guy exudes a swagger that gives off that he is hot s*** and he knows it.

He is considered by Leon himself to be his rival.

Even his trainer card says that if he wanted to he could easily be a champion of another region but stays in Galar so to one day best Leon.

Having battled his team, I can say that this isn't a BS statement. He uses weather teams.

The guy knows how to change up the weather and capitalize on a situation. His gym challenge is the hardest out off all of them because he knows how to use his Pokemon well.

He is an amazing final challenge before going to face off against the league challenge and the best battle before fighting Leon.

This was a VERY hard spot to pick, since I also adore Opal and Nessa (If I allowed Anime appearances, Nessa would be here instead of him because Nessa is amazing and deserves all the love )

But when it comes to strength, no one can top the strongest gym leader of Galar.

3. Jasmine (Johto)

The Steel Type Gym Leader of Olivine city.

The term Don't judge a book by its cover is the best example to  describe her.

Jasmine is a kind hearted soul that was nursing a Pokemon back to health at her first introduction.

She asks you to get the medicine and won't battle until the Pokemon in the light house is 100% 

And its a good thing she does, because if you tried fighting her first, I doubt you would win. Her Steelix is a MASSIVE tank and you will need a strong water type if you want to stand a chance against it. She is also cute and she was my childhood self’s first Pokemon crush.

I still find her the most fun gym leader to meet. While not a difficulty spike like Whitney or an unfair cheat Like Clair.

Jasmine is a tough yet fair gym leader.

2. Norman

The petalburg city gym leader, and most importantly. He is your in game Dad.

He is the fifth Gym leader in the game and you cant battle him until you have four gym badges. He is also arguably the toughest gym leader in the game at this point since his two Slakings could one shot most Pokemon unless you grinded like hell.

The emotional weight of the battle is what really brings it home. It is a clash, a father vs child moment in which you have to show your dad that you have surpassed him, that you are ready to be the best. That you are a true trainer.

He really does test everything you've learned up to this point, and thats what makes him so memorable.

1. Giovanni

The leader of team Rocket, and the Viridian city Gym Leader.

The two sided man that tried to conquer the region.

Ground Giovanni.

By Games alone he is the most competent Villain, considering he created team Rainbow Rocket, which consisted of ALL the criminal organizations and their respective leaders who had succeeded in their respective universes.

Giovanni also stands as the final gym leader of your journey, your time in Kanto you always seemed to barely stop him, but he still is powerful and you always got the feeling he wasn't trying.

But then, when you get to the 8th gym, fighting the toughest gym trainers do you see, the boss of team Rocket, glaring at you.

The real final battle with him begins.

And that victory, which is your key to the indigo league, the defeat of his criminal empire, and your conclusive win.

Thats what makes Giovanni so powerful.

He was your real final test.

(Plus if we counted the manga, geez he is like 100x more epic. Seriously, if you have not read the Pokemon manga, READ IT. Its like Stand battles with Pokemon. Anything goes. It is nuts!)
