With both Ashton’s chronic pain and acquired disabilities and Ashley’s casual mention of her ADHD, I’d just like to say how important and meaningful and how grateful I am to see a cast of successful, beloved folks talking about being disabled & anormative. They don’t owe us nothing talking about stuff like this, but sharing it feels like a warm hug and support and ahhh.

For those of you who don’t know, Matt and Liam and Taliesin have both spoken frankly about depression, and Ashley and Travis and Matt have all shared about being/having ADHD, and Matt has also spoken about Body Dysmorphia and growing up with a stutter, among other things. Dani Carr also has mentioned chronic pain, and Liam has hyperacoustis he mentions on occasion (and also one ear that has a different range of hearing) and Taliesin has TMJ and essential tremor:

Ashton’s pain comes from Taliesin’s experience.

Imogen’s overwhelm comes from Laura’s own processing of sound.

Matt could describe painful spells so well because he knows what it’s like.

Liam’s Quest feels so powerful because it explores real experienced hopelessness in the face of depression.

And obviously not everything has been explained—I’d never want to assume a person has PTSD or body issues or anything else based on character, because at the end of the day well researched and realistic depictions are important no matter who they come from and critical role does that better than anything else I’ve ever seen—we know different characters show different elements of their players. And it’s so refreshing and empowering to see disability included as one of those features, without shame or any attempt to be kept hidden.

I do think what’s being lost in the discussion of chronic pain in Bells Hells is how Ashton isn’t alone in this, before Imogen acquired the circlet, Imogen had chronic migraines.

Something Talieisin acknowledged when he commented: “Hey, tylenol!”

Its just Ashton and Imogen have different ways of coping but also it explains why Imogen was so gentle with Ashton after she and FCG went inside their head.

They both have invisible disabilities although most of the time I feel fandom forgets Imogen has chronic pain too.

I do like how in the recent 4SD Taliesin explained how he is deliberating playing Ashton as not dealing well and is lashing out and projecting every which way.

I like the prickly dynamic he developed for Ashton and Laudna, and the friendly poking at he has developed between Ashton and Imogen.

I do wish Ashton and Imogen also talked more on this. Or just spoke to each other more in general.

(But also, in the 4SD, I very much appreciate Dani Carr and Taliesin’s discussions about their experiences with chronic pain).

I think in D&D terms the typical assumption would be that a character with a chronic illness and/or chronic pain would have a low constitution score. The reality is a lot of people like myself would probably have constitution as our biggest stat because not only are we constantly staying up while fighting our bodies, we’re generally expected to ignore our own physical needs and wellbeing in exchange for being able to get things done. For example, I have been fully in the middle of a POTS episode and had to cook myself dinner, carry multiple loads of laundry up and down the stairs, etc. Like there’s such a real thing to Ashton Greymoore having chronic pain and yet their highest stat being Constitution.

I think something people are really good at acknowledging for Ashton as well as being apparent with Taliesin is that chronic illness generally means you’re stronger than people would assume, but you also blow through your resources faster and they can be just as counterproductive as they are helpful. It’s important to note that Taliesin struggles with chronic issues like hand tremors and has other chronically disabled friends like Dani Carr.

Like personally as an AMAB person with a condition that primarily hits AFAB people particularly hard, I’ve had cardiologists tell me “If anything your heart is overly muscular.” Which like, thanks dude yeah that’s decades of anxiety and years of POTS hitting and me having to stay standing up. Like I was in marching band in high school and I was the kid basically double-time marching in giant steps every show because I was the easiest to place since I’m so tall. Then when I worked fast food I had to either maneuver through hoardes of people to get back to my station or just push through them completely. In 90+ degree weather in the summer in Alabama with an anxiety disorder and a “heart condition” that’s actually just another neurological condition. Like I spent years doing manual labor and unloading trucks and pallets while exhausted on like 3 hours of sleep. You have to develop that kind of resilience when the capitalist system reinforces a world where no matter what if you want to survive as a person straddling the poverty line you have to work your ass off.

This doesn’t even get into the kind of resiliency you have to develop as an undiagnosed neurodivergent person who’s being told by absolutely everyone for most of your life that you’re doing everything wrong. Like Adaine from Dimension 20 is such a good example of that. This is also why I love the portrayal of Ayda Aguefort so much, because she really is like me having to learn everything from books because no one else in her life can explain things the same way that a book can. That is one of those things that as a late diagnosed autistic & ADHDer it’s really hard to explain personally without getting really like tragic or depressing in conversation because it sometimes is just a matter of “I’ve effectively been abused my entire life purely because the system wasn’t built for me and I had a lot of expectations I failed to live up to.”

All of this as a way to say that neurodiversity and disability are much more interesting and heroic feeling when they are portrayed by actually neurodiverse and disabled people, as well as those who love those people enough to tell stories that include them. I think TRRPGs and RPGs in general are a great way to explore this. Often times when we see disabled people in shows or movies that revolve around their disability there is a lack of agency, whereas often times with TTRPGs you have to create your own agency in the first place.

Some morning-after thoughts following C3E94!

SPOILERS BELOW!!

Starting from the top of the episode: Ashton's low-charisma flirting is so adorable, and I think that's part of why Fearne gets so flustered. She's used to the strong, abrasive attitude they usually put forward, so seeing this side of Ashton (if I were to take a guess) is part of the reason she gets so nervous about what to say back. That, paired with what Ashley said on 4SD ages ago that these kinds of feelings are new for her just makes for some adorably awkward flirting.

Next up: Daddy Zathuda (thank you Dani Carr for the nickname). My running theory is that he's trying to find a way to make her Exhalt for her to become the vessel so he can betray Ludinus. He learned via last night's test that nearly killing her doesn't make it happen, but clocked the protectiveness of her relationship with her found family (namely Orym last night). Test #2 will probably be more like what happened with the first Otohan fight.

Skipping ahead a bit, can we talk about the converging of 3 campaigns into one tent?! We haven't had this much overlap in a designated area since the Malleus Key Solstice event! Keyleth, Essek (in disguise), Taldorei council members, and our very own Bells Hells all talking to each other in one war tent! This is slightly reaffirming my opinions that this campaign is essentially Exandria: Endgame but I am here for it!

Last but most certainly not least, ASTRID BECK!!!! Hiding at Chastity's Nook of all places!! "Bren sends his regards" Essek you are amazing! I'm sooooo excited to see what happens next episode. Also crossing my fingers that we take a trip to visit Pumat Sol to stock up before heading out. I miss the Furbolg voice

Hey CR fandom. How do I get back into CR?

I have not watched a single episode since *checks notes* 3x50 (Ruidus Rising, where they infiltrate the camp). I was suffering from the story progressing too slowly (that was also my problem with CR2 with the whole "trudging through the ice desert with the nine-eyed guy" arc), so I kinda put it on the back burner, and then life got in the way, and I now have... 46 episodes to catch up on, and I am finally ready to admit that watching 180 hours of content is Absolutely Not Happening.

I am watching it partially for badass fighting moments. However, it's mostly for the character moments, but there are So Many of them, I imagine. I guess back then I also felt that there weren't many interesting character arcs happening at the time? Fearne had her parent stuff figured out, the Imogen power climb was progressing slowly, Orym was kinda Just There, FCG was crossing some coins to decide stuff but kinda didn't have their own goals at the point, Ashton... I have no idea what they were doing, Chetney was also Kinda Just There, Laudna... is always a delight, but everything was kinda overshadowed by the "let's storm the red camp" thing.

I don't even know what I am asking.

Things I am most interested in (so please no spoilers on those):

* the Laudna/Big D thing

* the Imodna situationship

* whatever relationship Imogen has with her mother going on

* whatever Sam Riegel has going on at any given point in time

* cameos of old characters, mainly from C2 if applicable

* I hear there is some lengthy Ludinus going on? Not sure how I feel about that

So, uh, what do I do now? Do I read the wiki? Skip 20 episodes? Watch Dani Carr videos? Give up and start my own DnD podcast?
