Salam and welcome back to SabrSprings' Deen Diaries series, where we explore and reflect on the most important parts of Islam ✨

This post focuses on the meaning of Salah.

The Importance of Salah’s Meaning

Understanding salah is the key to praying with khushu, an essential quality in worshipping Allah. Khushu means to have one's heart present and in deep connection to Allah (SWT). To know the meaning of what you recite in salah allows you to be more sincere, bringing clarity to one's mind and soul.

Allah says in the Qur'an: "Successful indeed are the believers; those who humble themselves in prayer" (23:1-2)

Takbir - Allahu Akbar (Allah is the greatest)

Al Qayyam - Subhanaka Allahuma wa bihamdika wa tabarak asmuka wa ta ala jaduka wa la ilaha ghairuk (Glory be to You, O Allah, and all praises are due unto You, and blessed is Your name and high is Your majesty and none is worthy of worship but You.)

Ta’awwudh - Aodhobilah Audhu billahi minash shaitanir rajeem (I seek shelter in Allah, from Shaitan, the rejected one.)

Tasmiyah - Bismillahi rahmani rahim (In the name of Allah, the most Gracious the most Merciful)

You're in a meeting with beings known to have a culture centered in romantic partnership and, therefore, you and Elya agreed that they would be more open to talk with a couple rather than with platonic partners.

Elya sits by your side comfortably. He leans against you when he speaks, and sometimes his eyes lock with yours. Contrary to his usual self, he doesn't blush or hesitate under your gaze. He holds it and welcomes it with the ease akin to a husband that has been with his partner for years, exactly as your facade demands. His voice is also louder and deeper than usual, and his demeanor exhales confidence like you've never seen before.

When you have to part for a while and the beings in the room look at you expectantly, Elya turns to you and caresses your left cheek. He directs his blue eyes to your hair, grooming it slowly as a subtle way to allow you to ready yourself for your cover going one step further.

When his eyes meet yours again, attentively, only you know what this really means: he's asking for consent. Getting a minimal nod, the unspoken sign from you, he places a soft peck on your mouth, one that deliberately puts more pressure on your upper lip than the bottom one, not going any deeper than it has to.

After he leaves with one of the representatives, you find yourself having a hard time focusing on the ongoing conversation. Your fingers unconsciously trace your lips every so often, intrigued.

That kiss not only felt extremely tender, but also strangely familiar.

"Hurry!" - Ian says, in between laughter. He takes your hand as the two of you run down the streets of Yokohama.

Every time he visits his hometown this happens: fans and photographers recognize "the art prodigy" born in the city and chase after him, and the fact that he has a huge face tattoo doesn't make it any easier for you to disappear in the crowd.

Entering a convenience store quickly, Ian takes off his distinct coat and throws it in a corner. The owner, an old lady, doesn't seem to mind the display at all. "Sorry about this, love" - Ian smiles widely as he pushes you towards the end of an aisle.

He presses you against the shelves and closes the distance between your faces, using strategic positioning to make it look very passionate for outsiders, while only actually placing a soft kiss on your nose.

Some fans come inside of the store looking for him and, after making disapproving noises at the two punks kissing publicly, leave at once.

Ian takes a few steps back while giggling and looking at you affectionately, his cheeks of a burning rouge. "We got them!" - He says, a huge winning smile on his face. Before leaving, he bows and takes the owner's hand affectionately "I'm sorry, Mrs. Takahashi". The old woman laughs fondly.

"No worries, child! Say hi to your mother for me" - She waves dismissively and releases his hand, bidding the two of you farewell. When you leave the store, the streets are calm again, but one thing still puzzles you.

If the danger is clearly gone, why are your fingers still intertwined?

"I'm taken" - Joana's dulcet voice resonates in the room towards the gentleman that you are in charge of protecting for the day.

Your face burns and your lips tingle with misplaced anticipation.

A few minutes ago, Joana suddenly embraced your body firmly and placed a soft kiss on your chin, cleverly using her curly hair to hide your faces just enough to make it look like a loving kiss from afar.

Now, still feeling her chest rub lightly against yours, when you look into her eyes for a sort of explanation, her pupils dilate in a way that the only thing you can actually see is your own confused expression.

You think the situation through and, then, realize that you too have noticed how the man's discrete advances continued to happen all day long towards Joana, and that not only is she already tired of incisively turning them down, but she is also in the mood to have some fun, if the glint in her eyes is any indication.

"I don't think that's ethical between co-workers" - The man says, his flirty expression replaced by a deep, almost childish frown.

Joana paces around the room and stops by the window, allowing the setting sun to bathe her skin and reflect on her eyes in a way that makes them glow with a deep red tone.

"It is in our line of work. And it has only strengthened our relationship, in fact" - Her voice is firm and, under her daring gaze, the man grows exceedingly quiet, finally.

When she looks at you with a beautiful, triumphant grin, you return it, but your senses confuse you: the kiss was clearly an act, and the deep relationship between you made up, but the pink tone of her cheeks and hammering heartbeat against your chest?

Those definitely weren't.

This job will be difficult– there will be friends that can help you along the way, but some of them have darkness that runs through them bone deep, and to trust the wrong person can be deadly.Still, if you can find it in yourself to trust them… or to simply look past your own judgement– you might be able to romance them, as well.

There is corruption all around you– make sure you know who to trust. Make sure you can trust yourself.

Translation of Salah: What are we actually praying?

As Muslims, we may offer Salah five times a day, every day, but do we actually understand the meaning of what we recite during our Salah? Do we know the significance of the words we are actually uttering? It is pertinent for every Muslim to not just know the Arabic recitations of Salah, but to understand what it means as well – you cannot connect with Allah (SWT) and be sincere in your prayer if you do not even know what it is that you are uttering in front of Him.

Here are the translations of the recitations carried out during Salah to help you establish a deeper bond with Allah (SWT):

Takbir

“Allahu Akbar”

Allah (SWT) is the Greatest.

Al-Qayyam

“Subhanaka Allahuma wa bihamdika wa tabarak asmuka wa ta ala jaduka wa la ilaha ghairuk”

To be honest, all of it! Especially, I think, not getting embarrassed at my own writing. I feel like I just need to start learning how to take a more objective view, instead of trying to refine, refine, and refine.

Another thing I would like to work on is my atmosphere! I hope to add more atmospherism into my writing, as some of my favorite authors do (a great example being @anya-dev and @manonamora-if, especially their game DOLOS)!

K: brings you painkillers and a pint of water (which they will make you sip, and keep refilling for you throughout the day). Understands that you probably won’t want to eat yet, but is planning something you can eat should you be hungry later. Will set up a bunch of films for you to watch that they know you’ll be able to fall asleep too. Will leave a bucket by the bed as well.

A: was already preparing for this when you got back drunk, you’ll wake up to painkillers and a nice big glass of water next to you. A will make you something to eat if you think you can handle it, but if not, they’ll just stay with you all day, making sure you drink enough water and got some more sleep.

Reese: will make sure you take painkillers, drink lots of water, and have something plain to eat if you can stomach it. Will be holding your hair/rubbing your back if you need to throw up. Puts on Disney films and watches them in bed with you.

Luisa: rolls her eyes at you as she gives you the painkillers and water. Will leave a bucket next to you and tell you to try and get some more sleep. Will have some dry toast ready for you to try and eat when you wake up.
