Alister’s head was throbbing as she was suddenly woken by the need to vomit. Slowly, sitting up, she struggled to not upset her body further by one wrong move. *This is specifically in the Crime!AU

In Lázaro’s canon, he and his three sisters are left in Chilé with their grandparents as their parents went to the US to work and send back money so they could have a better life in their country--

In the crime!au, Lázaro and his three sisters are brought to the US as well at a young age...and promptly abandoned by their parents as it becomes very clear that supporting four small children in the US is not as easy as initially thought. America is much more expensive and without their grandparents support...the Vegas make a hard decision that their children have to pay for. At an orphanage in the Bronx, life is hard-- but at least they’re together. Lázaro is protected and well cared for by his older sisters until they, as three lovely triplets are adopted as a set to a wealthy family. But they didn’t want the boy.

So he’s left behind.

And he’s no longer protected. Lázaro is generally a small kid and naive. He gets picked on a bit but when he’s finally adopted he thinks, this is it! I won’t be alone! I’ll have a family-- and yes, he’s still upset about his parents leaving him and his sisters, but he was so young he barely remembers them. He’s determined to be a good son to his new mom and dad and siblings (there are so many other orphans here!).

He wasn’t expecting the abuse. It started well enough, strict rules he must follow; keep your space clean, no crying, no fighting-- he nodded to each one and swore he’d follow everything to the letter. But not every kid could keep from crying or keeping clean, not when they were even young than him. And Lázaro had such a big heart once...he tried to stick up for the smaller children who were being beat or yelled at, which ended up in pain. He’d always been something of jokester, his bright humor being the last bit of light in a lot of these kids lives but sometimes not even a joke can bring a smile to his face.

So thus began the cycle. He stood up more, grew thicker skin much quicker. He was labeled a “problem child” despite the problem clearly being with the foster parents. He was shuffled from foster home to foster home, picking fights with more abusive parents and those that attempted even more than just a beating-- Eventually he had enough. He didn’t even last a day at his latest home, deciding at sixteen it was better to live for himself than any lying family they stuck him with, He wasn’t wanted? So what! He could live by himself. That of course, was easier said than done. The streets of New York are much different than a bad home; there was no provision, no space for you. He lived in many shelters at first before getting into trouble. It started with petty theft, small things when he was hungry mostly, Than drug dealing, because the idea of a small, if illegal, business where he could at least make money to feed himself was better than nothing.

And no, he no longer cared about the decrepit souls he sold smack to. He didn’t care that you could just see the hopelessness in their eyes-- he lived for himself, right? And he needed cash. He got bigger, stronger, got himself a gun 9′cause he’s a big man now! 18 means grown and no one could tell him shit). Now he had leverage over others, some semblance of power. You didn’t pay him what you owed, and you’d get smacked around, hit in the face with the butt of his gun. He still liked cracking jokes, but now it mostly was at the expense of another.

Maybe he’s a little bitter. Maybe he blames his shit parents who left him and his sisters. Maybe he blames his sisters for not trying harder to find him, to bring him home again. Maybe he blames too many broken homes and dirty faced children that he took the brunt of abuse from. Maybe he’s scared. Scared of what’s next. Scared shitless about when this was all going to end-- Whatever the reason, even if he feels numb and paranoid, he still manages to have a laugh.

And isn’t that what life’s about? Having a laugh? Because that’s how he saw all this-- it’s a joke, an ongoing gag. Yeah, he deals with unscrupulous people, gang bangers and junkies who, if they got it in their heads to do so, could snap at any time, but hey! He’s still here. He’s got money in his pocket, a piece stuffed down the back of his jeans and a slick smile; and that’s all he needed in the world. This was the life he’s chosen and dangerous as it might be, he was finally living his way. It wasn’t a good way but it was his fucking way.

And then Thoth upped the anti-- Thoth had muscled his way in with his money and his access and his people, driving away competition and made it very clear...he wanted some level headed men to join him. Those who had some sense of loyalty to their respective gangs....didn’t last long. And one day some German prick’s got an automatic aimed at his face and is asking him if he’s going to be a problem...!?

Lázaro? A problem? Suddenly he forgets about his problem child days and assures said German prick that hey, he can play ball. And that’s when he learned something new about himself; that jokester in him had a greater purpose. It kept him alive and knocked down people’s defenses. People think you’re stupid and cowardly and suddenly they’re alright with you. They believe you. They say things like I like you, Láz. And he gets to live. So he uses it more; take nothing seriously and no one would take you seriously either. He has three guns and good aim and yet when he walks into a room, it’s all smiles and laughs.

He’s a proverbial court jester of a criminal enterprise, his name not important, his life expendable but in the end, he can weasel his way out of trouble better than even Thoth could, ‘Cause guess what? Everyone wants the Big Guy dead but no one cares about Lázaro. Hate him or love him, he’s not your problem. Loyalty is a figment of his imagination and he’ll stay loyal up until the day your reign ends. Don’t get him wrong-- Thoth was more of a father than anyone he’s ever met. The old man’s earned his respect and admiration, but he knows how he works. He pets your head, tells you your special, you hear that a lot in broken families with too many little kids and not enough morals, but when he no longer needs you...you aren’t heard from again.

The German guy and the pretty girl...they’re Thoth’s favorites now, but what about later? When they mess up? When they’re injured? Do they think Thoth will let them mooch off him anymore? FUCK NO-- So Lázaro keeps doing what he’s been doing all along; taking what he needs, enjoying his current situation, but never letting both eyes close at night. He’s gotten used to running away from his problems as needed and he’s not about to grow a conscious about it now.
