Idk if this is an unpopular opinion or not. But I still think Astarion starts falling for us after the first night him and the player sleep together.

He's not in love by any stretch. But I think he's got a BIG ol' crush on us after that night that he struggles to keep from getting deeper.

And his reaction to our response for calling him out when he says "I love you" are very like "haha jk...unless?". He's got plenty of feelings but doesn't know what they are or how to communicate them. Or what even to do with them so maybe the second time he sleeps with the player is to confirm things.

I still don't think he's in love by the confession. I think he desperately WANTS to be. And he absolutely adores the player. He wants to try.

But by act III and especially after his personal quest, oh yeah the man is absolutely smitten then. When he finally says "I love you" in that graveyard, that's the moment it becomes real for him I think.

It's so funny because technically Astarions romance is a slow burn, but you're sleeping together the whole time.

It's always really sad to me, when I see people saying that Astarion thinks he's so much better than everyone. When that's really just the front he puts up, and baby you fell for it hook, line, and sinker. Cause this man really doesn't think he's better than anyone, he kinda hates himself more than anyone. That's why he gets so genuinely surprised you'd choose him over anyone else in camp. In truth, he seems to see himself as just a pretty face and a piece of ass. Something to use, and then be discarded when his use has been worn out.

He knows it so well in fact, he expects the same out of the player. Which is why he uses you in the first place, you fall for it. And considering how many people write him as this prince charming, I think he chose well. Then he feels like a total dumbass for catching feelings, because he's faced with someone who is open to casual intimacy with him but also actually cares about him as a person. Which is why he feels genuinely bad about it. You actually care about him, and he's never had that before. It makes him care about you, which is even more terrifying.

The last time he showed the tiniest bit of compassion for someone, he was thrown into solitary confinement for a year. On top of that any "relationship" he's had, it's all been fake. He even says he doesn't know what real is, it's all just a performance for him. And goddamn if he isn't a star actor, he knows his lines and he reads them oh so very well.

Which makes his "What, why?" Line when you tell him you'd rather be with him, all the more tragic to me. Because while he fronts that he knows he's the obvious choice, he really doesn't think that. You have way better options in camp, but you'd rather go with him?

Sorry, but no matter how much anyone out there hates Astarion. Chances are you could never hate him, more than he hates himself.

Anywho, this came on for a lot of reasons. But honestly one of them was me thinking "Man I don't think he'd realistically look at me twice. He's so far out of my league, I'd be burned to ashes for even trying."

But then it kinda dawned on me, that this man literally thinks so little of himself. He gets genuinely shocked you actually want to have him as a partner over everyone else in camp. No matter how big of an act he puts up, he doesn't think himself worthy of being loved. We can project all that self loathing into love for each other, and try to learn to love ourselves as we go. I think that'd be sweet.

Musing about Astarion's grave

ok so, he brings the player there and is all '200 years and i never came back'

But he had to have scoped it out earlier in the day right? Imagine if he had drug you there and the grave was just up and gone and that part of the cemetery was now a road or whatever. He may be bad at planning but this is act 3 Astarion who rejected the ritual, he can at least think far enough ahead to make sure the thing he wants you to see still fucking exists.

Just imagine what it musta fucking been like when he was creeping there, alone, not sure at all what he would see.

Will it have flowers? Will somebody be there? Offerings? Elves live a long time, do they maintain graves for a long time? Will there be other gravestones around, with his same last name?

Dread and anticipation brewing in his gut and then.... He finally finds it, and its totally untended and covered in vines. Nobody has been here to mourn in decades, if not centuries. Not a single tombstone nearby shares his name.

Had anyone ever been here to mourn?

No wonder having somebody who loves him that he loves back and feels safe about makes him just so manic he's down to bone then and there later on, poor fucker.

Can we just talk about Astarion's face for a second. I find it kinda funny that a bunch of people get so triggered by anime style drawings of Astarion with a smooth face. A lot of people going off about how he's not that young! Okay 200 years of vampirism aside 39 is not that old for an elf. These are beings that age at the same rate as humans UNTIL they reach adulthood then it slows down. Halsin who is around 200 (correct me if I'm wrong) without any vampirism is a middle aged elf. And don't start pulling out that, but he has laugh lines shit. I'm 24 years old and have laugh lines okay! This is not something exclusive to middle aged people.

Give the anime drawings people a break. This is their style. I personally think his little laugh lines are cute and yeah if it is like a mod that removes them in game it's kinda annoying, but like that's just cause they're modifying his already perfect face in game.

Though if people start taking away his curls we riot.
