Also me: *frantically flips my RiAQ notebooks* I'll include this very specific plot point in this completely different fic! Chefs kiss!

do genuinely find it fascinating how indeed.com is like the biggest job-hunting website out there and yet manages to be profoundly useless in every possible way

Disgust has absolutely no ethical weight. If you are basing your ethical positions on the emotion of disgust you should stop, it is entirely unjustified and leads to a huge amount of harm.

comics as an art form make me insane. they’re so difficult to do well. there’s so many different ways to make sequential art work and most of them are deeply unintuitive. onomatopoeia that feels completely ridiculous to put down often reads seamlessly. panels on a page become a fractally nested image composition challenge that’s only possible to lose because if you do a good job no one will notice. you have to direct the readers’ eyes on a specific path across the page but also account for the fact that they won’t follow it. comic time isn’t linear. if the order of events isn’t crystal clear the story becomes incomprehensible. sometimes you need to do this on purpose. all this for a medium almost universally considered less effective than animation and less respectable than plain text. even its own name doesn’t take it seriously

[image id: a four-page comic. it is titled "immortality” after the poem by clare harner (more popularly known as “do not stand at my grave and weep”). the first page shows paleontologists digging up fossils at a dig. it reads, “do not stand at my grave and weep. i am not there. i do not sleep.” page two features several prehistoric creatures living in the wild. not featured but notable, each have modern descendants: horses, cetaceans, horsetail plants, and crocodilians. it reads, “i am a thousand winds that blow. i am the diamond glints on snow. i am the sunlight on ripened grain. i am the gentle autumn rain.” the third page shows archaeopteryx in the treetops and the skies, then a modern museum-goer reading the placard on a fossil display. it reads, “when you awaken in the morning’s hush, i am the swift uplifting rush, of quiet birds in circled flight. i am the soft stars that shine at night. do not stand at my grave and cry.” the fourth page shows a chicken in a field. it reads, “i am not there. i did not die” / end id]
a comic i made in about 15 hours for my school’s comic anthology. the theme was “evolution”

Anyways, thinking about Batman pulling his disappearing act on the GCPD rooftop for the first time after partnering with Robin, and just leaving Robin behind.
Gordon turns around, notices that Batman is gone but the kid is not. Then Robin notices that Batman is gone, and promptly burst into tears because, “He left me! He left me behind!”
Jim Gordon is not heartless and he’s a father, he takes the kid into the precinct. He gives him a blanket and a snack. He tries to calm him down and asks if he knows a phone number that he could call for Batman. He gets a wobbly, “He doesn’t have a phone.”
Jim steps out of his office for a second to speak with an officer about turning the bat signal back on, and when he gets back to his office the kid is gone. The crime scene photos and forensic report from the joker attack yesterday are also gone from his office.
Meanwhile Robin is standing in the alley behind the GCPD, waving as Batman grapples down to meet him. He gives him a big smile and says, “I got the evidence!”
“Good job, Chum.”

Can you imagine like this entire arc of a character. Like they’re learning about life and how the world works for the first time and they’re really blooming into this personality. They started from complete rock bottom, they didn’t know how to eat or drink, how to sleep, how to even function realistically around people, but now they’re getting better at it and they’re realizing how fucked up their life actually was.
And then the show just. Hits them with a lightning bolt. Now they’re an entirely different character with a different backstory. Maybe a part of what made the character’s design interesting is now entirely missing.
The other characters not only recognize that this replacement looks like the other one but that they are entirely different personality wise. But they have the same name, and they look nearly the same, and they have a similar way of speaking.
Then later the replacement character sees a picture or something of who they replaced. The dissonance is so powerful they fall ill. They pass out and wake up in some kind of hallway.
They walk for a bit in the long, clean, gilded hallway. That is when they come across a glass display case.
Inside is someone who looks distantly like them. The person they now stand in for, emptily staring and smiling, stuck to the wall like an action figure, or a pinned butterfly. The plaque says their name and reads a brief description of the character’s backstory.
They then stare down the hall, and see what would be their friends along the walls.
And then they wake up and vomit into a bucket.
