Things In Newsies Live I Think About A Lot #2
During 'Carrying The Banner' you can see the newsies jumping around, playing with eachother etc, etc. One of my favourite examples was that if you look in the background, you can see a line of newsies all chasing after eachother before they all move towards the front of the stage to dance.

(I know this isn't the greatest picture of it, but it'll have to do.)
I'm not sure why this has stuck with me as long as it has, but something about this specific part is just so memorable to me.
I don't really know why, but this scene in particular has always sort of been a pretty big reminder at how young the newsies truly were. Like, this is a fairly fast paced scene with plently of movement and energy, and who do you normally associate with high levels of energy? Children.
And in life the majority of these newsies would have been 10-13 years of age. Kid Blink (strike leader and inspiration for Jack Kelly in the musical) was only ~16 years old, and he would have been a lot older than many other newsboys and newgirls in his time.
This might be a strange take on the scene, but it has been gnawing on the inside of my brain for ages, so now you all get to hear about it too.

i'm going to move on from supernatural posting, i swear to god, but first i'm going to talk about ep 9x07 bad boys
the episode itself is fine and good (i mean it's another example of dean having a support network while sam can't have anyone and dean keeping secrets while when sam does it it's the worst betrayal ever but that's not what this is about and sometimes i think about what this show did two earnest, loving traumatized characters by turning them into the most tragic versions of themselves and - ok, this really isn't what this post is about)
but fandom interpretation of this episode actually drives me up a wall because it does a disservice to literally every character
one, john did not leave them without enough money for food. dean gambled it and lost it. there's nothing in canon to say that john was taking longer than expected, that they were running out of money, none of that. dean gambled food money and lost it and then tried to steal to make up for it. he was 16 when this happened and it was a bad decision but i don't think he should be at all vilified for this. he made a dumb mistake and then tried to fix it with another dumb mistake. john was right to be mad and sam was also right to tell him that he shouldn't beat himself up about it. just like with shtriga - yeah, dean was climbing the walls stuck in that hotel room. but you know who else was stuck in that hotel room? sam. and he didn't get a break to go play at the arcade. again, i'm not blaming dean here, he shouldn't have been stuck taking care of his brother that young and he was a kid and john leaving his his children behind while hunting a child eater, whether he was using them for bait or not, is crazy. but dean stealing food wasn't about john's neglect and all the sacrifices dean had to make for sam. it was about him trying to fix his fuck up
two, and this is the one that really gets me, dean didn't go back with john because he had to take care of sam
listen. listen to me. i am speaking from experience when i say this
parentified siblings are still, first and foremost, siblings. especially with only 4 years between them. the show shameless i think did an absolutely excellent job with this and is why i love the first few seasons of it so much. fiona is without a doubt parentified, she is raising those kids, but she's also clearly their sister not their mother
i know later seasons dean and fandom like to make it seem like dean literally raised sam and john was just a background figure but like. that's not realistic, and frankly doesn't even make sense
the reason dean leaves sonny and goes with john isn't because he feels like he has to keep him sam safe. it's isn't because he feels like he has to raise him. it's because he loves him
you are reducing dean to the most pathetic woe is me archetype with this interpretation and ridding him of all his rich loyalty and care and love to saddle him instead with comparatively flat duty. dean is more than sam's caretaker. he's his brother
there's also no reason for dean to feel this way. he just massively fucked up in taking care of sam - that's why he's with sonny in the first place. john has alternate people to take care of sam when he can't do it himself, as he has just proven, and while i don't think we should turn a couple teenage mistakes into making dean incapable, dean absolutely would - and did! he carries every fuck up regarding sam with him! so right now he's really, really low when it comes to his own estimation to take care of sam and leaving sonny because of that doesn't make any sense
but he looks at his brother and is reminded how much he missed him and loves him and realizes staying means he loses his brother. the good and the bad. so he goes, because he loves sam more than anything else
this is also why sam leaving for stanford cuts him so deep. that's why this moment is a parallel to that rather than being unrelated. stanford isn't about sam leaving dean even though he has a duty to care of him, because he doesn't. dean's 22 and at this point is always hunting with their father so there's no reason for sam to believe his presence is necessary for either john or dean's safety
no, dean's mad because he chose his love for his brother over a normal life and sam didn't
(sam didn't want to choose at all but this isn't about him)
anyway. dean fucks up sometimes and john sucks but not quite in the ways fandom thinks and dean loves his brother past reason or sense

#--/ art#--/ story#ava the dark lord#⬇⬇⬇ context in the tags ⬇⬇⬇#alan becker#animator vs animation#animation vs minecraft#ava the chosen one#it is done !! ok ill give y'all the intro context synopsis now#the story goes that way way way way before Showdown cho and dark used to sneak into abandoned-looking buildings in the city at night#and one such target they stumble upon happens to be a storage room containing artifacts from Minecraft#the most interesting being the beds.#on this particular outing cho and dark were returning from other shenanigans and could use a place to rest. perfect!#dark belly-flops onto the right bed (scooting them out of alignment) and strikes a pose.#while chosen is shoving them back together again... oh. he's already asleep? ...???#!!! the beds draw you in if you get too close!#so what was supposed to be half an hour at most rest turned into the whole night. they skedaddled and forgot about the freaky beds.#until. a certain someone goes and dies :333#you get it now ! ! !#it was dark diesn't ALL ALONG-#yeah and then for extra spice i threw in that the hooded stick King meets with during his episode to buy a command block...#...happens to own that storage room.#thus and so begins more brand new shenanigans with dark interacting with this shady rando. i call em seafoam#i highly extremely doubt there's a tag for seafoam . . . wiki calls them only 'hooded stick figure'#anyhow. behind the scenes this was also a practice of drawing things in 3D... keeping on model... and composition for storytelling#and i learned some things about how Whiteboard works too :o i. didn't know about the fill tool. it is cool#yayaya!! so that's been in my head for a while.#thx for reading <3 <3 ill be posting some close-up shots of this and other things i put on the whiteboard later#Minecraft bed

ideologically i don't agree with mister squidward tentacles but he did go off with his utter lack of company loyalty and his rigid insistence on getting paid overtime for performing any duties outside of his job description

if star wars was pitched for the first time in today's entertainment industry it would be turned down. and so would any other thing that's currently a "big IP". where do idiot executives think the IPs come from to begin with???

Sort of obsessing over the concept of Tim, having been acknowledged canonically as a talented photographer, using these skills for morally gray reasons. This kid doesn't intend to use his fists to win every battle, or even most battles, actually. He's well-connected, fits into unconventional hiding spaces due to being lean and slender and 5'6", and he has a very nice camera. So really, Senator, it's a shame you thought you'd get away with so much. Think of what the Times could do with this evidence. High-definition doesn't lie. So you'll vote to expand funding for public education and Medicaid in the state, is that correct? Of course, you're an upstanding politician, after all. Couldn't have all this getting in the way of your career.

TBB has this really great thread right from the pilot about clones and inhibitor chips, where we start with our protagonists split apart by being resistant to the chips against the backdrop of the "programmed" Regs, except the one who struggles against it until Tarkin has it jacked up into "go murder them" mode-
And then Rex gives them this perspective of how impossible they are to fight, even he couldn't resist-
And then we see Howzer not only come around on what's right vs following orders but refusing to run, holding out hope for his squad to break free too and do what's right-
To Gregor who is just done and deserted-
To the whiplash of the s1 finale where we get Crosshair. No chip anymore, but I'm a soldier, I'm loyal, I follow orders, I made my decision where then in season 2...
The underground is growing, more are walking away.
We get the fucked around and finding out perspective as the clones around Crosshair "keep disappearing." Cody drops some cold truths on his way out the door. Perhaps made even colder by presumably not knowing that whatever haunts him (we know) wasn't truly his decision at all.
Mayday the last straw, he held out and kept serving but for what?
We open season 3 on "not every clone is your ally" with Omega, the hints of Emerie's plight. And the later e6 warning that some clones on Tantiss are still loyal to the Empire. But Rex is still compassionate- doesn't know what the shadow is but knows something has gone very wrong. He's killed his men but Rex wants to find a way to help him.
And then they do this wild thing where -
They drop the thread completely, the ones who are still loyal at this point are beyond hope, the ones who are brainwashed victims are so over the top that you'd forget they're clones at all if they hadn't shown the one lose his helmet, it takes Emerie realizing there's kids in the basement to have second thoughts about experiments and torture on prisoner clones, and the commandos never serve any deeper purpose.

In regards to Meg and her support of Kamala Harris, I don't need "we shouldn't expect "celebrities" to have revolutionary politics." discourse. Cardi B has been making a couple of quite good political critiques over the years on both sides of the political aisle and got hosed for refusing to vote because of imperialism. Khelani made a whole video about Palestine. Solange intentionally used Palestinians photographers and cinematographers to shoot her performance In Service to Whom and had made several references (although that's not enough) to the multiple genocides happening. What's happening with Meg and Kamala Harris is the uninformed enthusiasm of someone that is swept into the glittery Black magic/ girl power of it all, which ALSO happens to coincide with her brand.

they cribbed the toni/cheryl kevin/clay song this episode from a niche musical about a world where being straight is illegal (where it's a breakup song?!) and then tossed half the lyrics to make it an entirely different song and made fun of themselves for it btw. roberto is galaxy braining on a level the rest of us can't even comprehend.

Hmhmhmhn ok so I got to Griffith's "a friend is an equal" speech again in my Berserk reread, and I'm updating my headcanon to Grifffith definitely DIDN'T know that Guts and Casca were standing there at the time, because the art doesn't really indicate him taking any notice of them there. But I'd say he's also definitely thinking about them both in some way when he's talking about that stuff... how could he not be? Especially Guts, though I am still also not sure if he genuinely groups (or has always grouped) Guts in with those he sees as inferior for their lack of dreams/ambition and obedience, or if that's just how Guts himself is interpreting things. Like, Griffith definitely orders Guts to do things for him often and speaks to him as if he is his property, but maybe in some way that's because he knows that Guts is skittish about intimacy and inexperienced with having any close relationships, and maybe after their initial awkward conversation before the swordfight he intuits that being treated as Griffith's subordinate is probably kinda what Guts is most comfortable with starting out? Because Griffith still also treats Guts differently in a way that everybody notices, where they see that he is his "favourite," and he also tries to relate to him on a more intimate level and give him more choice in some of these matters than anybody else. The best example of this to me being in the library when he asks Guts to be his assassin, and Guts is kinda like "this isn't like you, just give me an order like you usually do"... perhaps Griffith had been trying to progress their relationship there to one that felt less like a leader and a follower because he had sensed the potential in Guts to provide him the equal relationship that he was craving, in the way that the other band members said "there are some things that only Griffith sees" when it came to his immediate belief and trust in Guts.... but then Guts's reaction to this moment confirmed to Griffith that Guts still wasn't really ready or willing to see himself as an equal or meet him on a more level playing field like that just yet. As much as Griffith does set himself above the others and willingly take the lead and have a hard time giving up that position or not viewing others as pawns in his game, I feel like he on some level also did think he wanted Guts to set himself apart from that subordinate role and be creating his own destiny and following his own dream (but certainly not in the way it ended up happening, haha). I feel like it definitely makes the most sense that Griffith's trying to convince himself of something during the friend speech, or perhaps articulate to himself what maybe has frustrated or disappointed him about some of these interactions that they've had. I really like the theory I reblogged a little while ago about how perhaps he is trying to distance himself emotionally from Guts and the rest of his followers there because he knows he will have to distance himself from them anyway to successfully achieve his dream, and to reaffirm to himself that trying to win his own kingdom at any cost is definitely the best choice. But I still need to reread the rest of the Golden Age again and everything that happens after that too before I can fully formulate my thoughts...
