Ladies please share this with any women you know starting their own business or non-profit
Business grants for women can help you grow your business for free, as opposed to small-business loans or other types of debt-based funding that you must pay back. But competition for small-business grants is fierce, and it takes considerable time and effort to win them.
If you’re up for the challenge, though, grants can be a great way to fund your new or existing business. Here are 18 places women entrepreneurs can look for small-business grants and other free financial resources.
Private small-business grants for women
Some private corporations and organizations offer business grants for women. Here are six to consider:
1. Amber Grant
Every month, WomensNet awards a $10,000 Amber Grant to a woman-owned business in a specific, rotating category. The categories for 2023 are as follows:
January: Skilled trades
February: Health & fitness
March: Food & beverage
April: Sustainability
May: Mental & emotional support
June: Business support service
July: Animal services
August: Hair care & skincare
September: Education & child care
October: Creative arts
November: Technology
December: Fashion & interior designers
On top of that, the organization awards a second $10,000 monthly grant to a woman-owned business and a quarterly $10,000 grant to one startup and one nonprofit.
At the end of each year, two of the 12 general grant winners and one of the industry-specific grant winners are awarded an additional $25,000.
The application is relatively simple: Explain your business, describe what you’d do with the grant money and pay a $15 application fee. The foundation’s advisory board chooses the winners, looking for women with passion and a good story. Businesses operating in the U.S. and Canada are eligible.
Because there’s no time in business requirement, companies seeking startup business grants for women may want to prioritize the Amber Grant.
2. IFundWomen Universal Grant Application Database
IFundWomen is a grant marketplace that specializes in funding and coaching for women-owned businesses. You can submit one application and when IFundWomen adds a grant from an enterprise partner, it will match the partner’s grant criteria to applications within the database.
If your business is a match, you’ll receive a notification and invitation to apply. Previous grant partners have included companies like Visa, Neutrogena and American Express.
3. SoGal Black Founder Startup Grant
The SoGal Foundation — along with company sponsors like Bluemercury, Twilio and others — offer startup grants to businesses owned by Black women or Black nonbinary entrepreneurs. Grants are available in amounts of either $5,000 or $10,000.
Awardees also receive fundraising advice, with a focus on investor financing, and lifetime access to the SoGal Foundation team. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, so you can apply on the SoGal website at any time.
4. Fearless Strivers Grant Contest
The Fearless Fund, in collaboration with Mastercard, offers $20,000 grants to businesses owned by Black women through the Fearless Strivers Grant Contest. The winners also receive digital tools to help them get and sustain their businesses online and one-on-one mentorship with a Mastercard small-business mentor.
The Fearless Fund runs a national grant program, as well as city-specific grant contests in Atlanta; Birmingham, Alabama; Dayton, Ohio; Los Angeles; New Orleans; New York City; and St. Louis. To qualify for this small-business grant, you must have a U.S.-based business, 50 or fewer employees and have made $3 million or less in annual revenue in the past year.

5. Cartier Women's Initiative Awards
Every year, Cartier awards three grants to women-owned businesses in nine different regions around the world. The Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards program is designed to support early-stage businesses that are focused on a range of social, economic and environmental development issues.
The first-place business is awarded a $100,000 grant, second place receives $60,000 and third place gets $30,000. Winners also receive executive coaching and the opportunity to participate in a variety of training workshops.
6. Comcast RISE
Comcast awards $10,000 grants to businesses owned by women and people of color several times per year. Each Comcast RISE Investment Fund application cycle is open to entrepreneurs in specific target cities. You can also apply for “marketing services and tech makeovers,” which don’t include cash prizes but can still help your business grow.
7. High Five Grant for Moms
The Mama Ladder organization — along with co-hosts Proof, Belly Bandit and Caden Concepts — offer an annual small-business grant specifically for moms. This grant, called the High Five Grant, is designed to support women caregivers with child(ren) of all ages, including first-time expecting moms, stepmoms and foster moms.
Entrepreneurs can submit an application online and share the story behind their business on social media. Finalists will be chosen by a panel of judges and then a public vote will determine the top three winners. The top business will receive a $25,000 grant, the runner up will receive a $10,000 grant and the third place finalist will receive $5,000.
Additional private business grant options
Although these options aren’t specifically for women, they’re good small-business grants to consider for any entrepreneur.
8. FedEx Small Business Grant
FedEx awards up to $30,000 apiece to 10 small businesses annually. One veteran-owned business from among those 10 winners can receive an additional $20,000 from USAA Small Business Insurance. Winners also receive money to use toward FedEx Office print and business services.
The application requires an explanation of your business, how you’d use the money, photos of your business and — this part is optional — a short video explaining your business. To be eligible, you must operate a for-profit business with fewer than 99 employees and at least six months of operating history.
9. National Association for the Self-Employed Growth Grant
Every quarter, the NASE awards up to $4,000 to up to four small businesses via its growth grants. These funds can be used for a variety of business needs, including marketing, advertising and hiring employees.
To apply for this grant, you must be a NASE member in good standing for at least three months. Annual members can apply at any time.
10. Halstead Grant
The Halstead Grant is an annual award for entrepreneurs looking to break into the silver jewelry industry. The winner receives a $7,500 startup grant, as well as $1,000 in jewelry merchandise. Five finalists and semi-finalists also receive $250 or $500 and help with promoting their businesses.
Both men and women-owned businesses are eligible for this small-business grant. To apply, you must answer 15 business-related questions and submit a design portfolio. Applications are due August 1 each year.
11. Fast Break for Small Businesses
These $10,000 grants — funded by LegalZoom, the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League and managed by the Accion Opportunity Fund — are available twice a year. Winners also receive LegalZoom services worth up to $500. You can sign up on LegalZoom’s website to be notified when applications open.
Federal small-business grants for women
Some federal government grants for small-business owners are designated for specific purposes, such as research and development projects, or for businesses in rural areas. Government grants typically can’t be used for startup costs or day-to-day expenses.
12. Grants.gov
Grants.gov is a database of federally sponsored grants, including grants for small businesses. Although these grants are not exclusive to women-owned businesses, this database is a great place to start if you’re looking for free financing.
To apply, you must obtain a Unique Entity ID for your business (a 12-character alphanumeric identification number), register to do business with the U.S. government through its System for Award Management website and create an account at Grants.gov.
To view grants specifically for small businesses, filter the results on the left side of the page under “eligibility.”
13. Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs
The SBA facilitates these two competitive programs, which provide grants to small businesses that contribute to federal research and development. Eleven federal agencies — including the departments of Agriculture, Defense, and Health and Human Services — post business grant opportunities on their websites. You can search current grant opportunities on the SBIR website.
To qualify, you must operate a for-profit business with no more than 500 employees and meet other eligibility requirements.
14. Program for Investors in Microentrepreneurs (PRIME)
Although the SBA coordinates some grant programs, the agency doesn’t typically offer grant funding directly to small businesses. With the PRIME program, however, the SBA provides federal grants to microenterprise development organizations so that they can offer training, technical assistance and coaching to disadvantaged small-business owners.
These grants are available to nonprofit, private, state, local or tribal-run organizations, including those that focus on working with women-owned small businesses. The Wisconsin Women’s Business Initiative Corporation, for example, was awarded a $200,000 grant in 2022.
» MORE: Business grants are ‘just not that easy.’ Here are some tips to help
State and local small-business grants for women
Because federal small-business grants are limited in number and often very competitive, you may have better luck seeking out grants for women at the state and municipal levels. You’ll have to do your own research to pinpoint specific grant programs in your area, but here are some places to help you get started:
15. Women’s Business Centers
The SBA sponsors more than 100 Women’s Business Centers nationwide, designed to help women entrepreneurs with business development and access to capital. Some, such as the California Capital Financial Development Corp., lend money directly while others help you find small-business grants and loans that you may qualify for.
16. Economic Development Administration
Every state and many cities have economic development resources focused on promoting strong local economies. For example, New York has several economic development districts, such as the Lake Champlain - Lake George Regional Planning Board, which helps local businesses access state and federal funding.
17. Small Business Development Centers
There are hundreds of SBA-sponsored Small Business Development Centers around the country, typically housed at colleges and universities. SBDCs offer free, one-on-one business consulting, such as help with developing a business plan, researching markets and finding financing — including grants, business loans and crowdfunding.
Some SBDCs offer training on certification programs like the SBA 8(a) Business Development Program and Minority and Women Business Enterprise Certifications. These programs can help businesses level the playing field when competing in the public and private sector.
18. Minority Business Development Agency Centers
The MBDA operates a network of business centers across the country that are designed to help minority business owners access capital, secure contracts and develop financial strategies. Your local MBDA business center can work with you to identify the right financing options for your business, including federal, state and private small-business grants.
The MBDA also runs the Enterprising Women of Color Initiative, or EWOC, to support minority women in their business endeavors. The EWOC provides access to resources, events and other opportunities for women minority-owned businesses.

Alternatives to small-business grants
Finding and applying for business grants can be difficult, as well as time-consuming. If you don’t qualify for certain grants — or simply want to explore other ways to fund your women-owned business — here are some avenues to explore:
Best small-business loans for women: Compare SBA loans, online term loans, lines of credit, microloans and learn about other available resources for your business.
Crowdfunding for business: Tap into the power of the internet to raise money for your business and promote your company’s product or service.
Small-business credit cards: Compare dozens of cards and find the best choice for financing your everyday business purchases — and earn rewards in the process.
SBA microloans: Work with a nonprofit financial institution to apply for these government-backed loans, which can be a good choice for new or very small businesses.

New Year’s Eve
New Year’s Eve takes place on the last day of the Gregorian calendar. The first New Year’s Eve festivities date back approximately 4,000 years, to the time of ancient Babylon; Babylonians celebrated the new year during the first new moon after the vernal equinox, in late March. During antiquity, the first days of the new year were celebrated at different times around the world, and the day was usually tied to an agricultural or astronomical event. For example, Egyptians celebrated their new year as the Nile flooded, and the Chinese New Year has long begun with the second new moon after the winter solstice.
In 46 BCE, Julius Caesar consulted with prominent astronomers and mathematicians, and introduced the Julian calendar, which closely resembles the Gregorian calendar. He made January 1 the first day of the year, partly to honor Janus, the Roman god of beginnings. At the time, the new year was celebrated by offering sacrifices to Janus, decorating homes with laurel branches, the attendance of parties, and the exchanging of gifts. During the Middle Ages, Christian leaders in Europe changed the date of New Year’s celebrations to coincide with religious holidays such as Christmas and the Feast of Annunciation. In 1582, New Year’s was reestablished to follow the Gregorian calendar by Pope Gregory XIII.
In modern times, New Year’s Eve is celebrated in various ways around the world. Many people in Spain and Spanish speaking countries eat a dozen grapes right before midnight, to symbolize their hopes for the following months. Ring shaped cakes and pastries are eaten in some countries, which signify that the year has come full circle. Legumes are eaten in various countries, which symbolize coins, and a hope for financial success in the upcoming year; lentils are popular in Italy, and black eyed peas are a favorite in the southern United States. Other popular festivities that cross international boundaries include the watching of fireworks and the singing of songs.
New Year’s Eve is not a federal holiday in the United States, but it is recognized by some states. Some organizations and stores are closed, offer limited services, or close early; schools are almost always closed. New Year’s Eve events in the United States began to gain prominence in the early 20th century. Many Americans celebrate the day and evening with parties at home and by attending public events at various places and entertainment venues. Often celebrations go long past midnight, into New Year’s Day.
The most prominent public celebration in the United States is the “ball drop” in Times Square in New York City, which has been held each year since 1907, except for a few years during World War II. Celebrations first took place in Times Square in 1904, sans a ball drop. Following the banning of fireworks in 1907, after hot ashes had fallen into the streets, Adolph Ochs, a publisher for the New York Times, wanted to replace them with something. The Times Square ball was inspired by time balls, which signaled to sailors on the seas; sailors set their chronometers after observing time balls with a spyglass. The first time balls were installed in Portsmouth, England, in 1829, and the first in the United States was installed in Washington, D.C., in 1845. The inaugural Times Square ball was made of wood and iron, and was made up of one hundred 25-watt light bulbs. As of 2017, the Times Square ball weighs 11,875 pounds, is twelve feet in diameter, is made up of 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles, and has 32,256 LED lights. It takes the ball sixty seconds to drop down a seventy foot poll to the top of the roof on One Times Square, where it lands as midnight strikes. Similar events are held in towns and cities around the country. The surrounding geography, culture, and history inspires what is dropped as the new year begins—animals, fruit, vegetables, automobiles, and industrial machinery have all been used. Atlanta has a “peach drop” as Georgia is the peach state; Brasstown, North Carolina, lowers a live possum in a glass enclosure; and Port Clinton, Ohio, drops a six hundred pound walleye.
In 1928, Guy Lombardo and his band, The Royal Canadians, began playing an annual New Year’s Eve event at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Up until 1956 the event was broadcasted on the radio, and from 1956 until 1976 it was broadcasted on television, along with coverage of the ball drop. Lombardo’s group were most known for their playing of “Auld Lang Syne,” which they helped turn into the standard song of New Year’s Eve. “Auld Lang Syne” was a Scottish poem put to paper by Robert Burns in 1788. The melody is from an even older Scottish folk song. The literal translation of the song is “old long times,” meaning something close to “once upon a time.” The song first became used at British and Scottish funerals, farewells, and group celebrations, before Lombardo began playing it in the United States.
“New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” debuted on NBC in 1973, moved to ABC in 1975, and was hosted by Dick Clark for over thirty years. It was Clark’s intention that it would be a younger alternative to Lombardo’s big band music. Central Park’s Midnight Run is another New York City tradition, where fireworks are shot off, and a race around the park begins at midnight. Some other larger cities that now hold large public New Year’s Eve celebrations include Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Major theme parks such as Disney World and Disneyland also hold celebrations.
In the Catholic Church, January 1 is a day honoring the Virgin Mary, where a mass is attended. A vigil Mass is often held the night before on New Year’s Eve. Many other Christian churches have “Watch Night” services, which are services that go past midnight. Attendees give thanks for the blessings of the previous year, and pray for blessings in the year ahead. These services trace their roots back to John Wesley, the founder of Methodism.
New Year’s Eve is being observed today! It has always been observed annually on December 31st.
There are many ways you could celebrate the day and evening. Gather with family or friends at a home, find a public event, or go to an establishment that is having a New Year’s Eve party, where there may be music, dancing, drinks, and food. If you are celebrating at someone’s house, you could bring along a snack or a bottle of Champagne. Watch the ball drop and other coverage of the new year on television, or ring in the new year by setting off your own fireworks and singing “Auld Lang Syne.” If you are feeling more contemplative you could write new year’s resolutions, detailing things you hope to accomplish in the following year, or you could attend a church service or Mass.

As we celebrate Martin Luther King Day, let's look at some of the things he said challenged capitalism and are left out of most history books.
"I imagine you already know that I am much more socialistic in my economic theory than capitalistic... [Capitalism] started out with a noble and high motive... but like most human systems it fell victim to the very thing it was revolting against. So today capitalism has out-lived its usefulness."
- Letter to Coretta Scott, July 18, 1952.
"In a sense, you could say we're involved in the class struggle."
- Quote to New York Times reporter, Jose Igelsias, 1968.
"And one day we must ask the question, 'Why are there forty million poor people in America? And when you begin to ask that question, you are raising questions about the economic system, about a broader distribution of wealth.' When you ask that question, you begin to question the capitalistic economy. And I'm simply saying that more and more, we've got to begin to ask questions about the whole society..."
- Speech to Southern Christian Leadership Conference Atlanta, Georgia, August 16, 1967.
"Capitalism forgets that life is social. And the kingdom of brotherhood is found neither in the thesis of communism nor the antithesis of capitalism, but in a higher synthesis."
- Speech to Southern Christian Leadership Conference Atlanta, Georgia, August 16, 1967.
"Call it democracy, or call it democratic socialism, but there must be a better distribution of wealth within this country for all God's children."
- Speech to the Negro American Labor Council, 1961.
"We must recognize that we can't solve our problem now until there is a radical redistribution of economic and political power... this means a revolution of values and other things. We must see now that the evils of racism, economic exploitation and militarism are all tied together... you can't really get rid of one without getting rid of the others... the whole structure of American life must be changed. America is a hypocritical nation and [we] must put [our] own house in order."
- Report to SCLC Staff, May 1967.
"The evils of capitalism are as real as the evils of militarism and evils of racism."
- Speech to SCLC Board, March 30, 1967.
"I am now convinced that the simplest approach will prove to be the most effective - the solution to poverty is to abolish it directly by a now widely discussed matter: the guaranteed income... The curse of poverty has no justification in our age. It is socially as cruel and blind as the practice of cannibalism at the dawn of civilization, when men ate each other because they had not yet learned to take food from the soil or to consume the abundant animal life around them. The time has come for us to civilize ourselves by the total, direct and immediate abolition of poverty."
- Where do We Go from Here?,1967.
"You can't talk about solving the economic problem of the Negro without talking about billions of dollars. You can't talk about ending the slums without first saying profit must be taken out of slums. You're really tampering and getting on dangerous ground because you are messing with folk then. You are messing with captains of industry. Now this means that we are treading in difficult water, because it really means that we are saying that something is wrong with capitalism."
- Speech to his staff, 1966.
"[W]e are saying that something is wrong... with capitalism.... There must be better distribution of wealth and maybe America must move toward a democratic socialism."
- Speech to his staff, 1966.
"If America does not use her vast resources of wealth to end poverty and make it possible for all of God's children to have the basic necessities of life, she too will go to hell."
- Speech at Bishop Charles Mason Temple of the Church of God in Christ in support of the Memphis sanitation workers' strike on March 18th, 1968, two weeks before he was assassinated.

Things I’ve Learned Going to a Great Art School
To preface this, I go to SCAD in Atlanta, GA. This particular college is ranked as one of the best colleges to go to for certain programs, namely fashion design and animation (of any kind; 3d, 2d, MOME, technical, the sorts). And here are some of the things I learned from going on 4 years of attending this school for my bachelors in animation
The school you go to does not matter to companies as much as you may think. Your portfolio/demo reel however? It makes or breaks your chances of getting work within your desired field.
Appreciate the assets your professors and your college gives you, but do not turn a blind eye to very real struggles you or anyone else will encounter
Do not be afraid to take inspiration of any and everything. People, animals, sounds, music, film, etc. Now, this does not mean trace/copy/steal other peoples hard work.
Be NICE and cooperative to your professors and peers. These are people you will work with in the industry. Networking and making good connections while you are in school is absolutely everything. These people can recommend you for projects and will help boost you in your career, given you do the same for them.
Your professors know what they are talking about. You are just starting out (whether you want to think so or not) and are here to learn and soak up any knowledge your teachers have to give. They have worked in and studied the industry for years. You have not. You do not know better than your professors, so be open minded and receptive to critique. Even if they seem mean. They are here to make you better and more prepared for when you do get to go out and work.
Be proud of your work. Whether you spent 20 minutes or 20 hours on something, own your work. Put 110% into everything you do like you are submitting it to your director/client/boss. Because a bad grade on something translates to you being fired your industry.
Take notes! Whether this be in a lecture or studio class. You will need to look back at this information. For example: Program shortcuts. Instead of searching for them, you have it in your notes.
Get involved in your schools community. Be in clubs, go to events, participate. My school requires you to attend at least 1 field trip and 3 other events for each class (usually). And if there isn’t a club you’re interested in? Make one. This also includes school discords/group chats.
When you can’t go to your professors, your peers/upperclassmen are your best assets. They are or have been in your same spot questioning and worrying about the same stuff. Ask them for help and do not be afraid that it is a stupid question. You are learning so not everything will come naturally. Everything takes practice.
It is ok to fail a class or two. This does not make you lesser than anyone. We’ve all gotten less than stellar grades before.
Take breaks. As an animation student, or just someone that does art, you can just sit for hours upon hours doing one thing, but that does not mean it’s good for you. Let your body and eyes rest for a couple minutes. Take a step back from your work and observe at a different angle. Go get a drink, take a walk, whatever you can do to decompress for a moment before getting back to the grind.
Stretch. For the love of god, stretch. Your hands, neck, arms, legs, feet. Carpal tunnel and muscle tension is not fun and will inhibit your workflow.
Exercise. Even just a little bit. It is easy to lay down all day whenever you don’t have anything to do. But your body needs movement. You can go on a walk, do yoga, lift weights... Just do a little bit of something every day. It does wonders for both your physical and mental health.
Some people will have more skills coming into something than you. They are NOT your competition, they are your ally. Treat them as such, because you can learn from them just as they can learn from you. This also does not mean you’re bad at something. Your work is great, always. Because you took the time and energy to make it.
Step out of your comfort zone. I started school in fall of 2020, height of covid. All of my classes were online. It was so hard to make friends at first, but branching out and talking to classmates allows for some great opportunities and that’s how you make your lifelong friends.
Go to extra help sessions and office hours. This is where you get individualized help from your professors catered to you and your work. This also shows your professors you take initiative and are willing to put in the work. It makes you look great.
Keep updating your resume.
Enjoy yourself. Take some time to do things you love outside of classes. Hang out with friends, play games, watch shows/movies. You deserve it.

Chapter 3
The Kaiju War on the World changed the nature of human society.
Some of the changes were good. There are no more human on human wars. War is now considered a waste of time and resources. The Kaiju attacks have also opened up a whole new industry, nearly eradicating unemployment in America entirely.
Mia Martin isn’t the only mech pilot, although, there are still only a few of them. There is also a ground defense unit, which is an extraordinary team of people who go after the Kaiju on foot with specialized weapons. Mia would argue that they are the real heroes and true badasses in the fight. There are also people who man tanks and fighter jets. You can never have too much artillery when it comes to taking down a colossal beast. There is also a clean-up crew. Their services are extremely important to disposing of dead Kaiju bodies before they turn into a mountain of rotting flesh and more maggots than you could ever imagine. With the dead Kaiju also comes a research team. They are trying to understand what these animals even are, where they come from, why they come at all. We have engineers who work on designing mecha suits and new weapons. There are mechanics to take care of the mecha suits. All of these teams need management teams and maintenance teams.
On the other hand, Earth lives in a constant state of fear and anxiety. Nobody knows when or where a Kaiju is going to strike. The only patterns are that the Kaiju tend to show up in large cities, usually near a body of water. There is a theory that the Kaiju come from the water, however, nobody has ever seen one emerge. They just appear.
While most people would agree that the Kaiju are a huge burden to civilization, there is a small group who would argue otherwise. Kaiju Preservation Activists. They are a cult of people who feel that the Kaiju are innocent. The Kaiju may be destructive, but it isn’t their fault. The KPA are vocal with their protests, and mostly make the Kaiju Defence Unit’s jobs of protecting its citizens more difficult than they need to be. It’s one thing to track down a giant monster and try to make predictions about where it will go or what it will do, but it’s another doing all of that while tripping through an angry mob who are sometimes attacking you with homemade weapons.
The Kaiju themselves are remarkable. They have tall, slender bodies, and stand on two legs much like a human would. They do stay a little slumped over as they move, with bent legs and their incredibly long arms nearly dragging on the ground. The beasts have a plated exterior that is very hard to penetrate with most ammunition. The creatures stand usually around 15 stories tall. So far, it seems that they are all the same species.
When the Kaiju appear, they trudge through the cities, mindlessly stepping on vehicles and fleeing pedestrians below. Sometimes they get angry, and begin swinging their pendulous arms around, smashing into buildings and easily annihilating any helicopters that are hovering near. The creatures have two round eyes, that are mostly on the front of their face, but seem to be slouching around to the sides. The Kaiju remain fairly calm at first, trudging along its path, until a mech suit appears. Then they are battle ready. The Kaiju readily lunge toward the suits, and the mech pilot must be ready to engage in hand to hand combat.
The appearances of the Kaiju happen every couple of months. Sometimes less frequent and sometimes back to back. It is often enough to keep people in a constant state of anxiety, but infrequent enough for people to just start letting their guards down. Not that there’s anything the average human could do about a Kaiju attack.
The cities who have received the most attacks (New Orleans, Atlanta, Miami, New York City, and Seattle) have begun establishing safe zones. These zones have underground cellars or sometimes industrious above-ground shelters where people can go and hide until the Kaiju is taken care of.
Again, this is not just an issue in the United States. Mexico City, Dubai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Madrid are all hot spots for Kaiju attacks. Not only this, but other cities are infrequently attacked as well. Sometimes even rural areas will have one pop up.
Mecha pilots and defense teams stay near their posts. Sometimes, they are deployed to neighboring cities to help out with particularly gruesome attacks.
Mia isn’t the only real life superhero out there. All of the mecha pilots are famous, as well as the members of the Kaiju Ground Defense Unit. Mia is simply the oldest and most popular. She is the face of American Kaiju defense. Anywhere you go, you can find posters, t-shirts, and action figures of the heroes. There is even a porn genre with inpersonators of many of the (mostly female) defense members.

Which was more formative for PV - the Thick of It or IWTV?
Definitely IWTV for substance in any meaningful way. This wouldn’t have been the same story in another fandom, and that includes those taken as inspiration sources for the modern setting (succession, political animals, scandal, anatomy of a scandal, industry, borgen, kings etc. just off the top of my head) as well as any thematic ones.
But I would say Thick of It is solidly formative in tone! Iannucci has a kind of dialogue that to me is TV ethos made manifest. (Let’s not even mention Sorkin here. Leave me alone Sorkin Mitt Romney just called. Sit down forever I’m tired of your heroism dick riding).
For all his weaker (and severely weakening) takes, Iannucci lands a naturalistic absurdity difficult to find in television before or since (with notable exceptions like Atlanta, Sopranos, Watchmen etc.) To get anything better you usually have to go upstreet and look at actual playwrights* that were put to screen and/or worked as screenwriters.
On this*, a few names, and just sort of contemporary ones because we can’t get into like, the glass menagerie or we’ll never leave this ask alive -
Tony Kushner (the GOAT to me. riding for him always), Lynn Nottage (my God... picked up Sweat rn and it has me,,,,), Eric Bogosian (!!), August Wilson, Suzan-Lori Parks, Stephen Adly Guirgis, Janine Nabers, Mart Crowley, Terrence McNally, Paula Vogel, and ofc... Albeee... (though he shouldn’t count if t williams doesn’t, but even so. my party, my bouncy castle, my anachronistic literary timeline.)

American Cable Channel 'Cartoon Network' yet potentially shutting down by 2025
Tumblr media
ATLANTA, GEORGIA -- Social media abuzzed with a new latest hashtag trend "#RIPCartoonNetwork" on the X Network (formerly Twitter, owned by X Corporation) after a community page called Animation Workers Ignited (AWI) posted and claimed that the Warner Brothers merger-owned cable TV kids network was dead. Following after Cartoon Network Studios' building shutting down last year in 2023, the state of animation and challenges animators face in getting enough work to pay their bills, leaving the animation industry is under attack or forcing go permanently off-air, implementing for a potential and upcoming final broadcast.
Discovery Communications and Warner Brothers, now known as Warner Bros.-Discovery (WBD) after the merger, several Cartoon Network projects were reportedly canceled. To name a few, the remaining and final CNS originals such as Craig of the Creek's new pre-school cartoon spin-off "Jessica William's Big Little World", "Iyanu: Child of Wonder" and "Adventure Time: Side Quests". While the acquired series from Canada and France goes to "Total Drama Island" and "Totally Spies!" are both securing new seasons today. All these are up to 2025 onwards.
WBD owns the network and its Chief Executive Officer named Mr. David Zaslav, has been delisting shows across their catalogues to cut costs, despite the company's substantial revenue. However, multiple sources indicate that Cartoon Network in America and regional cable TV kids stations in every single countries of the world will remain available, and there are still projects ahead. For timeshifter channel like Adult Swim in the adult demographic (shortly after signing-off for the afternoon or evening, along the Toonami programming block, will not be affected.
Animation workers, like creators in other professions at CNS are struggling to make ends meet as executives prioritize revenue for themselves and shareholders. The future of animation remains uncertain, but the cable kids network isn't shutting down entirely.
Big memories before the upcoming final broadcast of CN within a few to several years time, as the main animation studio is officially done, and yet, literally bankrupt as a whole. The trend of "#RIPCartoonNetwork" is a big misleading point and turned out false. From "Adventure Time" to "Steven Universe" to "Craig of the Creek", the cable kids channel will soon be the last time, if considered legit to see whether if you're new or current childhood grew up on national american television.

Concert Diaries: THE BOYZ - ZENERATION II
Artist: THE BOYZ
Tour: ZENERATION II World Tour
Date: July 21, 2024
Location: Fox Theatre, Atlanta, GA
Tier: SRA/Gen Admission
Time(s) Seen: Second time
Favorite Songs (Title Track): TATTOO, Levitating, Fantasize, DDD, Survive the Night, Back 2 U, REVEAL, The Stealer, Nectar
Notable Moments (in depth reflection under the cut):
Never been to the Fox Theatre before, it's beautiful in there and I finally experienced a concert with real seating aka cushions 😂
They also provided theatre concessions like popcorn, so I know some people were going to town
Every group I've seen in Atlanta has always said the same thing: "Atlanta is so HOT 🔥"
Jacob singing a snippet of Peaches - Justin Bieber
Kevin mixing up the dates of the previous concert in New York thinking it was "yesterday" instead of two days ago (dates of tour locations stagger every other day, so they were in Atlanta the day before the concert)
Eric and Q first time performing in Atlanta: Eric was on hiatus last tour in 2022, Q got sick while on tour and couldn't attend the Atlanta stop)
Haknyeon talking about Atlanta's sports culture: also asked if there were any sports fans in the audience def not me
Brought back pink hair predebut Eric, felt like I got teleported back to 2017 (which is crazy how I've been here since the beginning)
If I remember correctly: Atlanta is home to Sangyeon stans so they delivered whenever that man appeared on screen and talked, same energy last tour as well
The way I started losing my mind when they performed TATTOO (it's their first Japanese EP and I had no hope that I'd be able to see it in person one day since groups usually don't perform their Japanese discography outside of their fan concerts or in Japan)
The members taking time to acknowledge the second floor of the venue, and taking so many moments to scan and take in their image of the experience we're all sharing in that moment
The pure excitement and joy of being in stage and showing us how free they are when they're in the spotlight is addictive and yearned for: to keep their focus on their own path without engaging with any moment of disregard, undermining, or challenging their influence and presence in the industry
Sharing silly moments, such as them fooling around with the height of the mic stands during more fun and carefree songs
Witnessing the comfortability and confidence they now have from being in the industry all these years, while taking time to reflect on their journey as they were once young boys with a big dream ahead of them
The VCR was gorgeous: usually in between outfit changes, the videos shown usually compose of more behind-the-scenes footage (recording sessions, dance practices, self reflections, etc), but THE BOYZ really kept the concert consistent with their "Zeneration" concept (the theatre style venue made it feel like I was watching a movie)
My interpretation (since the Seoul concert VCR has more commentary and behind-the-scenes), there were lots of juxtaposition from a more industrial/sterile environment (all white set, cat walk, very interesting motion transitions (even though I used Adobe After Effects for animated illustration, VFX work on there is otherworldly), defying the natural laws through astrology and galaxy elements (traveling through space and seeing the warping of the universe was so dynamic and peaked my interest because I personally enjoy those themes), and teleporting us into a world filled with nature elements (open grass field, lakeside, flowers, trees, open sky).
THE BOYZ have been working for officially 7 years in December (which is the typical length of time a contract lasts), and I had the privilege of witnessing their growth and journey in finding their footing in the industry. Being a part of a "small company," the level of exposure and opportunities is drastically different in comparison to groups entering the industry from "big companies," whether from music show appearances, award ceremonies, variety show appearances, access to ambitious production professionals (music production, music video directors, content producers, etc). The threshold in attaining any level of commercial "success" is a financial and opportunistic division, which the industry currently operates on. Therefore, groups like THE BOYZ have to overexert themselves beyond what can be a walk in the park for other groups (which doesn't diminish the coexistence of all groups working hard while still acknowledging the innate advantages and disadvantages that vary from the level of influence a company has due to the saturated market), and from being so involved in their journey as a fan, THE BOYZ's ambition and passion in delivering the best performances while exploring and solidifying their artistic voice and color is one of their best traits that resonate to me as a multi stan.
With 7 years of experience, not only is their discography extensive and diverse, active solo/unit promotion (while bringing more attention to the group themselves) continues to keep THE BOYZ head above water for all these years. Appearing in shows like Road to Kingdom while also earning their ticket to join Kingdom: Legendary War, they only continue to make me proud to see them shining on stage and being recognized for their hard work and ambitions. Moments that resonated with me during those times were witnessing and sharing their vulnerable moments with us as the audience (which reminds me of Kevin mentioning after finishing their ballad songs that he kept forgetting the lyrics, but being met with empathy and a smile because we're all human and experiencing the same life full of pressure, anxiety, forgetfulness, etc): Sunwoo being so brave despite having a fear of being head below water and heights taking on many killing parts that challenged him and amplified the drama/storytelling of the performance, the members pushing the limitations of their bodies to showcase their creativity and drive to deliver to the audience something attention grabbing, Juyeon crying after finishing their Quasi una fantasia because he couldn't find his specific branch during the climax of the performance and felt that it could potentially risk their ranking (seeing the fancam of him scrambling on the side of the stage brought me heartache knowing how much pressure he puts on himself because of how deeply he cares about his performance), investing time to showcase a storyline throughout the show that built upon one another (from Eastern warriors, crowned kings, phantom thieves, blossoming sakura petals, and so much more). There is so much love and dedication to what they want to bring to the industry, while also understanding their strengths and capitalizing off of them: intentionality is the word that comes to mind.
From starting out with their school boy youth concepts from Boy as their debut song, silly resort employees in Thrill Ride, werewolf callbacks in REVEAL, defining what it being their individual versions of BE YOUR OWN KING means in their own right, thieves in The Stealer, competing against one another and resorting to violent methods to escape their doom in MAVERICK, exploring nostalgia as school boys again in Nectar, there are so many concepts and sides of THE BOYZ that has only solidified their position in my life as one of my favorite artists. The willingness to experiment and explore, the willingness to deliver new flavors of THE BOYZ while also calling back to past concepts as newer versions of who they once were at that point in their lives. Having so much awareness of the creative direction they're walking on is inspiring, it's admirable, it's cherished. Please give them their flowers, moments of acknowledging their efforts and impact they have on the world around them, and taking the time to return the love we receive from them tenfold. For some, it may seem like the end to a beginning, but with any end, there's always a beginning. I only hope and pray that they will continue down this flowering path and inspire everyone around them, while also taking moments for themselves to join in on the human experience and remove the fame and "idol" mask. That they are just like us, that they have their own worries and insecurities, their own qualms and moments of weakness, their own dreams and goals, their own paths to pave, their own acknowledgement of their emotions and down to earth contemplations. That we all aren't so different after all: that we all share the mutual exchange of love and energy for one another. We're all playing the same game of life: it's up to us to continue grounding ourselves and to return home to our safe spaces.
While driving home four hours away (ended up being three from me being ballsy and driving during midnight) from Atlanta shortly after the concert was over and everyone else attended hi-touch, I finally took the time to record a long awaited voice memo for myself: spent the entire drive reflecting and acknowledging areas of my life that deserve praise and have been on the back burner for a long time. Just from enjoying my time at the concert, the energy gave me so much strength, so much love and care, so much inspiration and desire to work harder, so much appreciation for living my life with intentionality, second by second, moment to moment. Moments like these mean the world to me, giving me evidence and more reasons to continue waking up every day whether to clear skies or thunder clouds. That there is more to this life than what meets the eyes. To some, it's never "this deep" or belittling people choosing to live in their authentic selves and love what they love even if it seems weird, lame, stupid, which to that I say: "don't yuck another man's yum" and "I hope that one day you will have the courage to reflect and meet yourself at such levels of depth where there's no reason to fear the judgment of others, society, the world. Where living in your authentic self will not only alter your relationship with your own pursuit of happiness, but wanting to share that same warm fuzzy feeling with the rest of the world. Nothing makes me more joyous than seeing someone else tap into themselves and light up like a chandelier, like a sparkler, like a candle, like a campfire, like a firework. Why wouldn't you want to witness such moments of pure passion and love?"

His energetic delivery, animated gestures, and expressive facial expressions make him seem much bigger than he is. This juxtaposition between his physical height and his stage presence adds a layer of complexity to his performances, making them all the more engaging.
