A-Z Sherlock Fan Fiction Tropes Bingo

Ahhh, so I saw this Fanfiction Bingo Card by @swissmissing going around, and even though I wasn't ever tagged, I wanted to do some recs of my own because, like, that's my whole brand LOL. I hope no one minds...🙃 I needed to have a list ready for this Sunday, and this was perfect, LOL.

And because I'm always trying to overachieve on these challenges, I'm going to do full black out, BOTH tropes in each square.

And perhaps some actors pretending to be criminals. What could possibly go wrong?

Retirement: Through the Clouds by Mazarin221b (E, 20,004 w., 6 Ch. || Retirement, Sussex, Bees, Home Improvement, First Time, Romance) – Sherlock takes a remarkably early retirement at 47, and convinces John that a change of pace would do them both good. They buy an old cottage on the South Downs, and exchange their nonstop life in Baker Street for quiet contemplation, bee studies, and book writing. They might go completely insane, but sometimes it takes stepping outside of the life you're living to find the life you want. Part 1 of Through The Clouds

Road Trip: Hitting the Water at Sixty Miles an Hour by what_alchemy (E, 30,568 w., 5 Ch. || Fake Rel., Road Trips, Slow Burn, Mummy Holmes) – “You love your mother, Sherlock?” John watched the muscles in Sherlock’s jaw jump. He nodded in one sharp jerk. “Then we’re going to her party and making her happy.” John let out a resigned sigh. “As a ruddy couple, you bastard.”

This is my current reading list.

I'm in the middle of " Deflowered " and it is one of the best stories I have ever read.

Vulnerable Sherlock and Badboy John with an amazing and heartbreaking backstory attached is something that makes it very hard to stop reading but it is one of those stories you actually fear the ending because then it's over. @lorelei-lee @swissmissing @swissmissficrecs

Yes there is plenty of sex and that kind of sex that makes my skin positively tingle which says probably more about me then I should display on the Internet but if fifthy shades of grey had been that hot and equally intelligent I wouldn't have fell asleep after the first chapters.

I also bought the two books ( ebook in my case) of the original German version.

I have absolutely no idea why I did it :)

I haven't read a German book in years and not actually missing it but I bought it immediately today and I blame @meetinginsamarra  entirely 😅

ok so a few days ago i posted about how a fic i really loved got deleted off of ao3 and now i am taking to tumblr bc i've seen this dumpster work miracles and i need HELP

so i cannot remember the title but it was a an Avatar the Last Airbender Zuko/OC fanfiction and it had an airbender!oc main character named Emi (or Ema it started with an E i'm sure of it) and she was an airbender raised in hiding by an elderly healer woman and after the woman passes the main character decides to travel the nations like she was never able too and she first meets Zuko and his crew after the events of the winter solstice episodes and he catches her airbending and decides to take her along in order to lure Aang into giving himself up and it does NOT go the way he wants let me tell you and there was a sequel that was incomplete and it was going into the comics and it was SO GOOD YOU GUYS HAVE NO CLUE

i went to go back and read it for possibly the millionth time and i couldn't find it in my subscriptions or in my bookmarks and it literally broke my heart bc there are not a lot of fics that i found that fit my very specific self imposed hyperfixation rules and it ticked ALL my boxes

I started writing this fic in a hotel room in Japan two years ago after asking for prompts on Tumblr. This began as a one-shot for the prompt: Make me. And...I kept writing it. Hahaha, I really should know myself better by now.

I know many are turned off automatically by the Daddy kink tag, and honestly take care of yourselves and have a blessed day, if that's a hard no for you. But I will say that this fic begins as a Daddy kink fic and then transforms into something else. It's mainly an exploration of consent and identity and vulnerability and communication and agency and trust building and and and and.... I'll let the tags speak for the rest of it. This happens through sex. Lots and lots of sex. Some of the sex is kinky, but it is always switchy, switchy sex. Neither character is exclusively a top, neither one is exclusively a bottom, in fact I aim to make you question what those things mean. The Moriarty plot was very tangential to my wanting to write this story, but provides much of the urgency, so take it as you will, squinting from far away, perhaps ;)

My husband randomly decided to watch Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone this afternoon. I have no idea what prompted it, since he’s never watched a HP movie before, but he’s enjoying it. And a discussion of House points led to me remembering that I wrote an essay about House points for HP InkPot, one of the Houses on the old HP fan fiction archive, FictionAlley.

Care to explain what the OMEGA Verse is? 'cause I really don't get it. Like so its an M/M mpreg verse with different creatures of humans. What's the hype? Thank you, so much, Swissmiss

Reply: Others have written much more detailed and well informed explanations (e.g. Fanlore), but my take on it is that it is more an alternate biology or alternate anatomy system than specifically mpreg.

The very basic generalization is that there are 3 “secondary genders,” namely Alpha, Beta, and Omega. All of these can be either “male” (=with penis) or “female” (=with vulva). Alphas are usually the impregnators and Omegas are usually the ones that can become pregnant, and there is often some chemical-based attraction between them. "Heats” (=high-fertility phases) which lead to intense copulation are a common feature. Betas are often infertile or simply just like normal humans.

Authors really go wild with their own variations, though, so even this basic outline may not hold true for any given story. For example, in an omegaverse story I am translating from German, males cannot get pregnant and one of the main pairings is two females Alpha/Omega. I’ve also seen countless interpretations with tentacles, cloaca, eggs, barbs, bulbus glandis (”knots”), pheromones, emotional telepathy, and many more.

As to what the hype is, one can only speculate. Some people love exploring the options, and others hate the mere idea. I think one thing that is attractive to authors is the flexibility. You can add all sorts of tweaks to custom-fit the biology to the story you want to tell, and what you want to do with your characters.

Finally, although it began as a fandom thing, there is now a multitude of original published fiction available. So it really does seem to spark some larger interest.

Ahhh, Hmm. Yeah the author did seem to remove it. Seems they published it under a different title, from what I understand on this Reddit Post about it, which unfortunately has a broken Amazon link, BUT I THINK I found the right story on Amazon Canada here (judging by the comments, I believe it is the right one), for 7.99 Kindle and 15.99 Paperback, which is a good alternative if you want to support the author and / or if you like having hard copies of fanfics!!

I tried Waybacking from a post by SwissMiss, but I think I need individual story links to get us the PDFs, sadly.

Tagged: All About Me and Fanfic

I got tagged by the wonderful and amazing @amethyst-noir, who also made me shout out loud at my weekly coffee by saying I’m one of her favorite fanfic authors.  *flails*

1.  At what age did you start writing fanfiction?

Mid-twenties, I think?  I can’t recall the exact year, but I’d been in fandom for a while and thought ‘huh, maybe I can do this too.’  I wrote fanfic for a while and really loved it, then I took on a soul-sucking job and stayed quiet for about eight years.  It wasn’t until Endgame and ironstrange that I decided to come back.  So I kinda went from a lurker to a writer and way more vocal overnight.

2.  Who is your favorite author?

This might sound like I’m just throwing it back, but @amethyst-noir really fucking makes my day with every fic they post.  In order to answer this question, I went through my ‘excellent tag’ on my pinboard and (hand to God) quite a few of their fics are there.  SwissMiss of the Sherlock fandom is also a favorite.  @visionarygalaxy is amazing and a fav.  @elisaphoenix13 is blowing up the fandom with sweet, cuteness that makes my day.  @teamironmanforever, @whimsicalethnographies, short snout, and twobettafish are also amazing.

3.  What is your favorite kind of scene to write?

Fluff.  In my defense, I often find if necessary to write 70k of hurt and angst, but it’s necessary to get to the good part.  Then they can be happy and the happiness REALLY MEANS SOMETHING.  : )

4.  What is your favorite fanfic?

Uh, no.  Can’t do it.  Idk if I can even do a top ten.

Without even looking anything up, I can tell you that I’ve read Let’s Make a Bed Out In the Rain (Sherlock fanfic) a dozen times.  Also, in Sherlock Performance in a Leading Role and The Bang and the Clatter.  Warm Me up by halloa_what_is_this is also one I’ve read over and over.

From Loki fandom: Bargaining.  It’s amazing.  Hands down.

From ironstrange fandom:  A Bend in the Universe, the Anew series, i babysat a god and got stabbed with a fork, Tin Type, An Invite to Eternity, Long Road Out of Eden, Surender are a few.  I know I missed a dozen but aaaah this question.

5.  What tags do you avoid like the plague?

Usually dark fic and mpreg.  And that’s not a 100% avoid, that’s just what usually happens.  I have a few dark fics and mpreg fics I enjoy, but it’s really rare.

6.  What AU do you wish you could write, but feel you won’t manage?

Anything with a lot of action.  I feel like I fail at writing a good fight scene.

7.  Do you outline or write as you go?

Outline.  New details and new smaller plot points might pop up as I go and that’s great, but I have a definite idea of where I’m going and how I’m going to get there before I start.

8.  What has been your favorite story to write so far?

My write fic, whatever souls are made of, is my current fav.

9.  Do you prefer to write one-shots or multi-chapters?  Why?

Multi-chapter fics.  I feel like I have the time to let the reader get to know my version of the character and then take them on a journey with me.

10.  Which is your favorite kind of comment?

All comments are good comments.  Every time I see a comment in my inbox I get so happy.  It feels so good to be appreciated.  That said, I do have a soft spot for the person who notices a little detail and says they liked it.  I feel like that one person really got what I was trying to do.  Thank you, one person.

11.  Why did you start writing fan fiction?  Why are you still writing?

I had a story in my heart and I needed to get it out.  That answer applies to both questions.

Happy Thanksgiving

This year I am thankful for our tireless fic writers. Every night I come home to Johnlock, like reading the same story, but brand new, all over again. That's all I ever wanted from fiction.
