🎆𝗪𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗖𝗞-𝗜𝗡🎆 Can you believe it's next year already?!! 🤯 𝗕𝗜𝗚𝗚𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗪𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗚𝗢𝗔𝗟 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮 My biggest goal for 2022 is to finish writing Snow White and the Guardians of the Sword. I am determined to finish writing this book! 𝗘𝗡𝗗 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗛 𝗚𝗢𝗔𝗟𝗦 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗗 I didn't make any of my writing goals this month. My entire family and I were sick with the flu. I barely wrote because this month was exhausting and busy. After spending some time away from the keyboard, I am ready now to dust off my writing tools and get back into the game. It’s a weird feeling, coming back from a writing break. Like thinking your fire for writing has been extinguished and only to find you were just misdirected. One of the things that really helped me was finding writing prompts to ignite the fire and get things moving again. 𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗞 𝗧𝗢𝗖𝗞 𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗞 𝗧𝗢𝗖𝗞 The most festive I'm being is breaking out a bottle of sparkling grape juice and watching Rockin' Eve. But, I broke out the red lipstick again for today too! Shhh! I have 50 pages of a new book written. I haven’t shared them with anyone yet, so the #manuscript and I are still in the “it’s complicated” stage of our relationship. We’re “talking,” getting to know each other, seeing if we click. Is there chemistry? Can I see us lasting in the long run? 🖤 Making the “in a relationship” book status official is one of the scariest parts for me; it’s when I send my first draft to my husband, my agent, my beta #readers, anyone. I have zero feedback to work on. It could suck. Like, really suck. And if they hate it, I’ll likely go back and #rewrite it, but all lovey-dovey, shmoopy-whoopy glow is gone. 🖤 So the next time you read a #novel, know that there’s likely a first draft out there where that minor character you love dies tragically. These contour lines occurred randomly on my face as I tried to take a picture with one of my favorite artist books, Andrew Wyeth: the Helga Pictures. It reminded me of drawing portraits in art school. How it's easier to see the whole as the sum of its parts. The Helga pictures are a cache of 240 works, including nudes, of a single model between 1970-1985, and it's breathtaking to see her age through his eyes. Wyeth is a master not only of detail but also loose gestural drawing. But when he puts down details, they're at the microscopic level. It made me think about the Aristotle quote above, not only in terms of people, how we sometimes look or judge a single part in ourselves or others without considering the whole, but also in terms of writing. A whole book is infinitely better than just the setting, the characters, the voice. As I dive into this new story, which is stretching me beyond my comfort zone as a writer, I'm struck once again by how much front end work goes into writing a book. I'm a plotter, and the process that works best for me is filling my head with everything I can about the individual parts that make up the whole story before I can begin to dig out the microscopic details. I separate all the knowledge I've pre-gathered and put those into a quick outline and start from there. I always need to have a few lines of narrative or dialogue come to me randomly when I'm not writing, as well. Only then am I ready to start stitching together, for better or worse, the sum of its parts. What process works for you?
