I work at Walmart 😭 specifically at the customer service desk, which means I get the full horror buffet: returns, waste hazard disposal, AND we’re the money center, so I also process financial services like money orders, check cashing, bill payments, domestic and international money transfers, and the occasional customer meltdown over $4.82 (we had to call cops on this geriatric loser last week lmao on average I speak with our local PD like 2-3 times a week, it's ridiculous 😭)
but wait—there’s more! I’m also cross-trained in cosmetics, lawn & garden, electronics, automotive, and the fuel station, so I’m constantly getting pulled to cover breaks across the store annnnd, since I'm the closing associate, I also act as a stand-in team lead when my closing team lead isn't around so I have to do things lkke field complaints, delegate tasks and breaks, etc while running the desk/money center. All for shit wage too 💀
so when I say I write in the stolen scraps of my life, I mean it. I write on lunch, after shifts, in my car, in the notes app while pretending to process claims—I am feral and clinging to fiction like it’s the last piece of driftwood in the ocean. But my advice is this:
steal time—during breaks, before and after work (depending on your hours), a moment between customers/clients! I write messy drafts in my notes app or on receipt paper
voice memos—too tired to type after work? i ramble ideas into my phone and transcribe later
keep a no-pressure doc—a private space where nothing has to be good. just vibes. I will also write a summary of everything j want to happen in the fic so that I have a clear vision in my head
reread your own stuff—reconnect with why you care. even skimming old WIPs can reignite the spark!!
most importantly, learn to forgive yourself—some weeks you write 5k, some weeks 5 words. And that's okay, any progress is good progress and I don't shame myself for it anymore. Being too drained to write is not a failure of discipline, that's just late-stage capitalism trying to smother your creativity!!

Last year was, by all accounts, a bloodbath for the tech industry, with more than 260,000 jobs vanishing ïżœïżœ the worst 12 months for Silicon Valley since the dot-com crash of the early 2000s.
Executives justified the mass layoffs by citing a pandemic hiring binge, high inflation and weak consumer demand.
Now in 2024, tech company workforces have largely returned to pre-pandemic levels, inflation is half of what it was this time last year and consumer confidence is rebounding.
Yet, in the first four weeks of this year, nearly 100 tech companies, including Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, Google, TikTok and Salesforce have collectively let go of about 25,000 employees, according to layoffs.fyi, which tracks the technology sector.

Typing "2+2" into my calculator, and it makes an intense mechanical whirring sound as it heats up to the point it begins to glow red, then white, foul black smoke billowing forth and filling the room to the point of opacity as the local lake lowers by 2 inches. Finally, there is a cheerful *ding!* noise from somewhere within the sooty gloom, and as the overhead fans clear out the smoke and the small device sitting on the table cools down enough to be legible, its answer becomes clear. I pick it up with a pair of iron tongs and present it to the couple: 3. "The calculator has spoken," I say. "You only have 3, not 4 dependents since the twins joined your household. Your welfare checks will reflect this, and not a penny more. Our decision is final." Both begin to tear up, although it's not clear whether it's due to the smoke or recieving yet another huge financial hit since calculators took their jobs as an architect and an automotive engineer. Now a Mechanical Calculation Expert fills both of their roles, and simply punches the numbers into a machine. The results may be far, far worse and already be causing deaths from roof collapses and airbags failing to deploy, but goddamn are they cheaper to produce. "MC is the future!" the billboards read, barely visible through the smog. It is true, to a degree; it's certainly a fixture of the future, but not by the choice of anybody who's to actually live in it. Every smartphone and PC now has a little calculator app constantly running and open in the corner that cannot be removed without jailbreaking. They're useless and everyone hates them, but it makes tech companies more valuable somehow. Calculators have replaced lawyers and doctors, somehow; all math must be run through them, no matter how simple or arbitrary, to "increase productivity." You can't even get a job at McDonald's anymore, because the cashiers have been replaced with self-serve calculators, where you punch in the prices of the products you want. They always seem to add on a few dollars. "Just learn how to integrate MC into your workflow, man. It's the future." a man types in a YouTube comment about a math teacher who's become homeless after being entirely replaced by a single calculator that just sits on what used to be her desk. Unbeknownst to her, a hidden camera in the corner of her classroom had been recording every lesson she'd taught for the past 20 years, which had been used to build the calculator that replaced her. She was never compensated, just fired the second the tool was ready. The average child now has no grasp of how numbers work due to the high failure rate of these machines, but it's probably the kids's own faults for being stupid fucking children lol All goods and services are now shittier and everyone is now poorer, but hey, silver lining, all those products are now cheaper to produce! Not to buy though, lmao, they've actually tripled in price across the board.
'People are panicking about AI tools the same way they did when the calculator was invented, stop worrying' cannot stress enough the calculator did not forcibly pervade every aspect of our lives, has such a low error rate it's a statistical anomaly when it does happen, isn't built on mass plagiarism, and does not obliterate the fucking environment when you use it. Tackling Android Automotive OS (AAOS): A Deep-Dive into Real-World App Integration by Silicon Signals
Recently, our Android team at Silicon Signals took on the challenge of integrating one of our legacy Android applications with Android Automotive OS (AAOS). While Google offers an integration guide for media apps, we faced a unique set of architectural and modular challenges that demanded custom solutions beyond the standard documentation.

Legacy Code Meets Modern Requirements
Platform Core (AAP): A modular structure with minimal interdependency, housing player integration, networking, and persistent storage logic.
App Core (AAL): A tightly coupled structure responsible for the app’s front-end, business logic, and APK generation across multiple app stores.
Most new features lived in AAL, which was deeply dependent on AAP. As we evaluated the AAOS requirements, we realized a naive approach—building AAOS as a feature module on top of the existing base—would bloat the app size, introduce unnecessary dependencies, and increase the risk of breaking functionality due to updates meant for mobile or tablet versions.
Engineering the Right Solution
Rather than layering AAOS on top of our legacy architecture, we rethought the structure:
Extracted our MediaBrowserServiceCompat implementation into a new standalone module called mediabrowser.
mediabrowser was designed to depend only on what AAOS needed—like playback, library access, and media session handling.
Created a new top-level module, automotiveos, which handles AAOS-specific UI, settings, and authentication.
Reconfigured Dagger dependency injection to support this new architecture.
This refactor allowed us to decouple AAOS from the legacy mobile architecture, reduce app size, and future-proof the codebase.
The Real Work: Migration and Refactoring
Moving MediaBrowserServiceCompat out of the core base module revealed deep legacy dependencies. The refactor touched over 140 files. But the modular outcome was worth it.
Then came the Dagger challenge. Our new automotiveos module lacked over 150 bindings previously handled by other modules. We tackled this by:
Creating custom or stub implementations where needed.
Moving reusable logic to common modules.
Abstracting app-specific logic into the appropriate module.
We categorized dependencies smartly and rebuilt the graph with minimal disruption.
Lessons Learned
Creating an abstract MediaBrowserServiceCompat layer helped isolate AAOS and mobile behaviors.
Testing across multiple AAOS devices is essential due to platform inconsistencies.
Clear internal documentation and nomenclature (AAOS ≠ Android Auto) avoided confusion.
